Over 800 people voted in the survey, and Goa topped the charts with 28% of the vote, followed by the Andaman Islands

If you have a deep wallet and a fat bank balance, head for the Deltin Jack floating casino in the Mandovi River, and take part in the Valentine’s Day Special Indian Flush Tournament. How Drums Can Soothe Your Psyche

A

re you ready for a joyful celebration of rhythm? Group drumming can be a fun and effective way to reduce stress, connect with oneself and others, live in the moment, and build musical skills. Arthur Fernandes’ Drum Circle makes drumming engaging, accessible, and meaningful for all ages, all levels. Don't worry if you don’t have an instrument. A large selection of drums and percussion instruments are provided. And you are welcome to bring your own instruments if you wish. A Drum Circle is any group of people who come together to play Hand Drums, Djembe’s / African conga’s, Frame Drums and other percussion instruments to make music. People with no experience or training can join in. It is a fun entrylevel learning experience accessible to anyone who wants to participate. The goal is not precise rhythmic articulation or perfection of patterned structure; it’s an ancient approach that uses rhythm to promote healing and self-expression. If you are the sort of person to whom words do not come easily, drumming may be your mode of communication. Drum Circles provide a menu of interactive drumming programs to suit your needs. It’s team building, stress-relief, and hands-on entertainment—rolled into one! The police, ministers, faculty of schools and colleges, corporate middle and senior management and students too can participate. It can be integrated with music, dance, plays, fine art, and concerts, at Annual Day functions and community festivals. Drum Circles provide rejuvenating health rhythms with group drumming sessions for mind-body wellness and personal growth. They stimulate the immune system, physical activity, and mind-body awareness. They help to strengthen team bonds, relieve stress, relax and re-energe. Arthur Fernandes is a musician and psychologist. He graduated in Abnormal and Developmental Psychology, and completed his his Masters in Industrial Psychology from Fergusson College, Pune. Having developed a fondness for music since he was six, rhythm has stayed with him. Through school and college, Arthur featured at National level competitions. He’s got national level certificates in Fine Art, and as an

outstanding contributor and performer of music from Fergusson College. He has been involved in developing organizational skills, cultural programs, and soft skills connected with the University of Pune. Trained by Arthur Hall to become a Drum Circle Facilitator, Arthur played an integral role in the Human Resource and Employee Relations Department at Infosys. He handled one of their largest profiles. Responsible for Employee Engagement, Employee Assistance, Employee Emergencies / Health Management, and Employee Induction for over 5000 employees in the BPO sector, Arthur has managed large events on a ‘zero’ budget. With his years of experience in music, Arthur believes in the healing powers of music. He uses music in his counseling sessions, workshops and motivational talks. He is a certified Arts Based Therapist. He facilitates Drum Circles on small and large scales for communities, NGOs, schools, universities, institutes and corporates across India. As a certified Arts Based Therapist, he has previously worked as a Counselor at St. Andrews School, Pune, and offers his services helping NGO’s to conduct Life Skills Training Programs, workshops and sessions on Motivation, Confidence Building, Decision Making, and Sex Education in schools and colleges across Pune, Mumbai and Goa. A University of Florida study a few years back concluded that well over half the songs written in the modern era were about love and relationships. A pretty surprising figure, as we would have thought the number to be closer to 90 percent! Speaking of love, it’s in the air right now – and to celebrate Valentine’s Day 2014, we’ve brought you a number of lovely stories, no pun intended! First, check out our piece on the various parties and events happening around town in our Music & Nightlife section. Then, check out our story on all the out-of-the-box romantic adventures that you might just want to pursue right now. And of course, don’t miss the piece on the best places to ‘hook up’ in Goa. We’re not talking meat market, here. Our suggestions are classy – and different! On these pages, we offer up a thoughtful piece on the loss of Konkani, with so many young Goans neglecting to learn their mother tongue. As our story points out, there’s almost an embarrassment about speaking Konkani in some circles – a phenomenon which suffers an abrupt meltdown when Goans run into each other abroad. And then there’s Monty Sally’s piece on love and fashion, or, better put, HIS love for fashion. Be sure not to miss Kornelia Santoro’s wonderful suggestion for a marinated strawberry Valentine sweet. Speaking of sweets, our piece on Delicieux’s mouth watering offerings is not to be missed, and neither are the sweets themselves! Check out our story on the myriad, world-class facilities of Manipal Hospital, and our story on a wonderful project by the Goa Institute of Management on the defence of women’s rights. In this issue, we also offer an excerpt from Dragon of My Heart, the first book of young novelist Yashodhana Raj. Last but certainly not least, don’t miss our piece on an exciting musical event that took place at J&A’s Little Italy restaurant in Baga. Kudos Joanne Fernandes! Goa Streets wishes all our readers a very happy Valentine’s Day! The Goa Streets Team

Happy Pink Valentine with Strawberries! By Kornelia Santoro While Europeans are freezing and shivering during the winter months, in India we can enjoy the strawberry season. Their unique flavor and color make them the perfect ingredient for a romantic Valentine dinner. Some years ago Indian farmers started to grow strawberries on a grand scale. That’s how we now enjoy them at this time of the year. This lovely heart-shaped fruit is full of healthy nutrients. A unique mixture of phenols protects the heart, battles cancer and acts as an anti-inflammatory. In one study, strawberries topped a list of eight foods thought to prevent cancer. Elderly people eating many strawberries were three times less likely to develop cancer than those eating no strawberries. Strawberries are chalk full of vitamins and minerals. Although strawberries nowadays resemble each other all over the world, our modern strawberry is actually the product of a lucky coincidence. Ancient Romans loved European strawberries, which were much smaller and not as sweet and fragrant as the strawberries of today. In 1714 a French engineer sent to Chile and Peru "discovered" a larger strawberry native to that region. He brought samples back to France. Plants from these samples did not thrive well. But a natural crossbreeding occurred between this species and a neighboring North American strawberry that grew nearby in the field. The result was a hybrid fruit that was large, juicy and sweet. It quickly grew in popularity in Europe. Descendants of this plant have

now conquered the world, making the strawberry the most popular of all the berries. Although many chefs like to incorporate fruits into salty dishes, in my kitchen this is a no-no. I like my strawberries the oldfashioned way, marinated with sugar and port wine, topped with a melting scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. Here is my suggestion for a dessert to end a romantic Valentine candlelight dinner: Marinated strawberries with vanilla ice cream. If you have an ice cream maker, make your own ice cream. If not, any good ice cream from your supermarket will do. Ingredients (for 4 servings): 1 packet strawberries, 0.1 liter port wine, 0.4 liters cream, 1 tablespoon vanilla essence or 1 vanilla pod, 1.5 cups icing sugar, 0.1 liter milk, 1 tablespoon whiskey How to prepare marinated strawberries with vanilla ice cream: Start with the vanilla ice cream at least one day in advance. If you have a vanilla pod, slice it open, and scratch out the creamy interior into a pot with the milk. Add one and a quarter cup of sugar and bring the mixture to a boil. Let it simmer for 1 minute before switching off the fire. When the mixture has cooled down, blend it with the cream and the whiskey. If you use vanilla essence, simply put the cream, the vanilla essence, one and a quarter cup of sugar, the milk and the whiskey into a container and combine all the ingredients well. Put your ice cream mix into the fridge for 24 hours and then prepare the ice cream with your ice cream machine and store it in the freezer. Wash the strawberries well under running water. Always do this before

removing the green leaves; otherwise the berries soak up the water. Then clean your berries well, cut away all discolored pieces and remove the leaves. Cut them into halves, put them into a bowl and pour the port wine and the remaining quarter cup of icing sugar over them. For serving take some nice desert bowls, spread the marinated strawberries over the bottom and top with scoops of vanilla ice cream. If you like, add a sprinkling of toasted, chopped almonds and a little bit of cocoa or cinnamon for effect. Enjoy! V

Konka – what?

The Disappearance of a Mother Tongue? By Crespo D’Souza

N

eysa de Souza blushed as I stared at her bewildered. I had just asked her a question in Konkani, Goa’s “mother tongue”. She didn’t understand. She grimaced and asked me to speak in English. A young college girl born and brought up in Goa, Neysa counts herself among the growing legions of young Goans who are decidedly uncomfortable in their native language, Konkani. “Mhaka Konkani ieta (I can speak Konkani),” Neysa muttered in weak protest. But she was fumbling. One would think that a people who pride themselves on being different from the rest of the country, and for whom language is the bedrock of their identity -- would embrace Konkani wholeheartedly. But judging from the plethora of young who don’t know the language or know it only superficially, it seems clear our dear Konkani is endangered. Thousands of youngsters graduate from schools, especially those in Mapusa, Panjim and Margão and to a certain extent Vasco-da-Gama, who speak only English. Experts say the phenomenon of parents speaking to their children in English, while speaking Konkani among themselves, is largely to blame for Konkani’s precariousness. The child has an English environment at home as well as at school depriving him or her of learning the mother-tongue in the early, crucial years. In effect, English becomes the “mother-tongue”. Sociologist and language scholar Jason Keith Fernandes said the phenomenon could be attributed to the fact that many of these families are seeking upward social mobility. Fernandes points out that English has been taught in Goa for centuries, even under Portuguese rule, as it became clear the British, not the Portuguese, were on the rise. “This led to many Goans emigrating from the state to British controlled colonies in Africa or in other parts of India such as Bombay and Karachi. Ability to speak English at that time was something that was looked up to among Goans…” Konkani taking a back seat to foreignimposed languages is really nothing new. During Portuguese rule, missionary schools generally discouraged speaking Konkani. The difference was back then, it seemed everyone was pretty much able to gain proficiency in their native tongue, irrespective of colonial impositions. Today, a visit to any of the state’s

middle to up market restaurants or pubs or social gatherings like musical or art shows indicates Konkani is almost absent in the conversations. It is evident from the body language and facial expressions - youngsters seem almost ashamed of speaking Konkani in these up-market places. If one initiates a conversation in Konkani with a new acquaintance, discomfort and surprise are evident. The Konkani that is taught in schools is in a largely upper caste dialect, alien to what is actually spoken by a majority of the population and in a script that is rejected by a majority of the state’s Catholic population. When the same Goans go outside their state, the attitude changes, of course. The language of shame at home can suddenly become a brotherly bond of unparalleled dimensions. Rashmi Menezes from Taleigao recently visited Rio de Janeiro as part of the World Youth Day celebrations. She was near the colossal Christ the Redeemer statue in Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, and as she adjusted her camera to get that perfect snap of the breathtaking structure she was constantly interrupted by the movement of other tourists. “Aarey, matso kuxin rao re!” she blurted out in Konkani. The tourist she was yelling at stared wideeyed, bewildered, approached her and

asked: “Tu Goenkar?” One in a billion chance… two groups of people both from Goa but living in different parts of the world had converged atop the mountain on the same date and time. A flood of Konkani greetings and conversations happened atop Corcovado, thousands of kilometres away from home. “When one leaves one’s state and wishes to stand out and claim the identity of coming from Goa, the only thing they can cling on to is the knowledge of Konkani.” “It is then that many of the young people who, neglecting learning Konkani back in their own state, realise the value of their language,” said Fr Savio Abreu, a researcher at the Xavier Centre for Historical Research states. “Having to speak Konkani among other Konkani speakers while others look on wondering what on earth they are speaking is an experience in itself.” They say the English that is spoken in Goa is often riddled with Indian-isms and more specifically Goanisms, all of which arise from literally translating Konkani syntax but using English words. Very common is the use of the word “no” at the end of a question -- “You’re coming, no?” instead of “You are coming, aren’t you?” Everything from Konkani idioms, to cultural connotations is literally translated into English. The shift

towards English is evident in how the language of Masses has changed across churches in Goa. The Holy Family Church at Porvorim, which caters to much of the new settlement around the area offers just one Konkani Mass at 7am on Sundays which is thinly attended and mostly by senior citizens. It offers well-attended Masses later in the day, all in English. Fr Anand Pais who was the first parish priest of the Church, used to stress a lot on the importance of Konkani. His arguments, as expected, did not cut much ice with his predominantly English speaking Parish. However, several other village parishes continue to have Masses in Konkani and some offer Masses only in Konkani. Another Catholic priest, Fr Natalino Raj used an example to cite how English is spoken in Goa. A doctor asked a young boy to open his mouth during a routine throat analysis. “Open your mouth,” he asks the boy. The boy does not react. He repeats the question, still the boy does not react. His mother then steps in. “Baba, Aaaa make,” she requests and immediately the boy opens his mouth. “This is the kind of English -- Goan English -- that is being spoken here,” Fr Raj states. It would be funny, if it weren’t so sad, that we are losing a developed language for a pidgin-tongue. 

he Cherubic Assassin soars through the realms of minds and with precision shoots arrows and renders hearts & minds incapable of functioning normally. Every twang of the bow is lethal. Yes I am capable of love & am in love with my soul mate “fashion”. Fashion and I met during my school years & with Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Yasmin Ghauri, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington powering down the ramp, I was smitten. It was love at first sight. I wanted to weave & sew dreams & replicate the visual impact of masters like Gucci, YSL and Chanel, which I guess was & will be a lifelong endeavor. It is no surprise that my pursuit of fashion became a 24-hour occupation. Browsing through magazines, sketching on countless pages of numerous diaries and hundreds of collages later, I decided it was fashion or nothing. Was I becoming a fashion Stalker? There was a moment of separation, when Mr. 9 to 5 had my shoe laces tied up & I seemed to be going nowhere in my quest for fashion. To say I left a great career behind would be wrong as the confines of a regular job had me gasping for the want of a creative release. I had to break free & I did. The courtship begins as I took up a small course in fashion designing after attending a fashion workshop where my take on fashion was appreciated and my designs were deemed ‘avant garde’. It was not long before fashion & I were hitched for life & then came a multitude of fabulous times. There were the early

days when I captured the “Together for Panjim“ campaign in my garments. There were defining moments with “cirque de lumiere”, which saw the use of diaphanous fabrics, acrylic sheets, and glass & mirrors in an attempt to mould the behavior of light in a garment. Deep soul searching moments with my collection “Surreal R.E.M’s” in which I tried to capture a paradigm shift in the nature of a dream. These little boxes of time will be gift wrapped & locked up in my cranium to be opened when at some moment in the future I will travel back in time to revisit the milestones of my journey. What does the future hold? Valentine’s Day cometh and I have planned to take fashion out for dinner & music. To put it simply, shows with great cuisine, fabulous music & celebratory fashion. The first step into the next adventure will feature “The Construct Gash II”, inspired by the movie Barbarella directed by Roger Vadim, starring the incorrigible Jane Fonda. I am researching Kirigami to create 3D surface embellishments for this show. Many laboring days & sleepless night are yet to follow, but every time I uncork a bottle of champagne & pour it into a tulip, I will, with a smile on my face & love in my heart, raise the glass to Fashion - my love, my life. I love you baby “Happy Valentine’s Day” V ____ Monty Sally is a fashion designer in love with his work.

O

k, so you’re a die-hard romantic, and partying – or rather getting all tanked up at some drinking establishment – is not really your idea of celebrating love this Valentine’s Day, what with Goa expected to be packed with lovelorn revelers at every turn. Yet, you’re not really sure exactly what it is you want to do. Not to worry. Here are a few ideas to make the day (and night) a really romantic and memorable - one which you and your romantic partner will remember for months to come, until next Valentine’s Day.

V Turn your house into a love pad This one’s for those already living together. Just like you decorate your house for Christmas, Diwali or New Year’s Eve, decorate it for Valentine’s Day with romantic motifs. Well, you’ve got to wake up with love, so put heart shapes on pillows and sheets, cut out different coloured hearts and place them around the house, use light perfumed candles in the evening, make a long, never-ending playlist of favourite love songs to be played all day, and make yourselves a

romantic dinner with champagne. Then dim the lights, hold hands and watch a romantic movie late into the night, and at midnight segue into lust… V Go for a couple massage There are so many spas and massage salons all over Goa these days, you’ll be spoilt for choice. But this is one of those once-a-year special days, so spoil yourselves and go in for an extravagant one at one of the more exclusive spas. They conveniently have couple rooms,

and you can have it done with chocolate, Champagne, and so many other things.

V Go for a night time beach stroll I recommend you do this on the Sinquerim-Baga beach stretch, which has more than 200 shacks and is quite safe. Holding hands, start at sunset and watch the fabulous colours of the evening sky. There’s going to be a full moon this weekend, so the sands will be sparkling as will the surf, which washes on to the shore, besides of course the breaking waves. You can stop for a drink or two at a shack on the way, or go a little inland for some great food at one of the beachside restaurants and get back on to the beach. There are plenty of non-crowded areas where you can relax on the sand. You might even decide to make it an all-night affair and do the whole 9-kms stretch, finishing by sunrise on Feb. 15. I suggest you start at the Baga end and head for a hearty buffet breakfast at Vivanta Fort Aguada. You can have Sex on the Beach, but only in the form of a cocktail!

V Go Goan! I don’t mean go to a Goan dine’n’dance. I’m talking old-style romance here. Do as they did in the old days, when you professed your love for each other by making a private visit to the church, kneeling down in the front row and offering a prayer together to the Virgin Mary. Alternatively, the Hindus went to a temple and did approximately the same thing. Everlasting love after all is a very serious thing, not to be decided as you shake your ass in a disco.

V Spend the weekend on a houseboat Yes, you can hire a houseboat for the weekend and simply float around. There are a few houseboats available on the Chapora river. They come with a bedroom and living room, besides the deck and a kitchen with a small staff to take care of all your needs. The lovely scenery all around is very romantic. Britney Spears spent one of her honeymoons on a houseboat. It’s just the two of you sailing on a boat going nowhere… V Long-distance is best… Separation and distance always makes the heart grow fonder. So if you’re going to be far apart this V-Day, don’t worry, you can still have the best, most romantic Valentine’s Day ever! See, there’s SMSes,

V Go to the movies Watching movies curled up together in a dark movie hall is one of the oldest modern ways of romance. It’s known as the magic of the movies. Try and get two seats in the last row, cuddle up, feel the breath turning all steamy, and watch a nice love story unwind on the big screen. V Bring on the Champagne and Caviar A special day calls for special measures. There’s nothing like a bottle of Champagne to liven up the mood. Pair it with some delectable food which you can cook together – but only if you know how to cook. Or you can always get something parceled and warm it up. The easiest way to have Caviar is to dump some of it in the Champagne and scoop or drink it. Or you can have some oysters poached in the sparkling wine along with the Caviar. Should get you all piped up for some frenetic activity in between the sheets afterwards. V Do some sky-gazing Have you ever seen Venus, the planet of love? No? It’s known as the morning star and is brightly visible in the eastern morning sky, the direction where the sun rises, in the mornings these days, even till 7 am. If you’re staying somewhere in the Goan countryside, spend the night watching the sky for some of the 88 constellations – you can download the info from the Net. Constellations are clusters of stars which form certain shapes, like Cancer the crab, Aires the ram, Scorpio the scorpion, Gemini the twins and so on. Different constellations are visible at different times of the night and at different times of the year. Will make you realize the vastness of the world, and hey, you just might end up clinging to each other even tighter together after feeling so small.

V Go bird watching It’s mating (hahaha!) time for many of the birds at this time of the year. It’s great fun, especially if you’re the romantic type. The male birds will do all kinds of things to attract the female. We suggest you try to spot the big Black Eagles doing it; there are many of them around. The males will do some spectacular dives and so on, and then the male and the female latch on to each other, front to front, zip around in dizzying circles in the sky and hey, the little ones get born a month or so later! Yes, you’re right, they only do it – mate – once a year! Even the crows have their mating season at this time of the year. V

Being Cupid 12 Out-of-the-Box ‘Hook-Up’ Ideas This Valentine’s Day In Goa By Dielle D’Souza

W

hen your tried-and-tested methods have met with disaster and you’re tired of being set up by well-meaning friends, there comes a time when you take matters into your own hands. You’re not really looking for love, but you’re not trying to avoid it, either. Here’s a list of places you could ‘stumble upon’ all things bright and mushy. Watering holes and night clubs

Bus buddies

This one’s a no-brainer. Get your game face on and head out with some friends, be open to conversation and moderate with alcohol intake (you do not want prospective dates to see you slide horizontally across the floor). If you need to turn someone down, politeness will earn you respect, and probably some positive attention from the right quarters.

It’s a route traveled every day, gets boring and can be least looked forward to if you have long travel times. Spice it up by making buddies with the cute guy or girl on your route. It will make you long to get on your way to class or work each day. If you don’t take the bus, there’s always the option of car-pooling with the office hottie. Shows some love for the environment, too.

Breakfast at a luxury resort restaurant or beach-side eatery

This is when couples in love are usually canoodling in bed, so chances are the other stragglers in the restaurant are also single. Goa abounds in these romantic settings and not everyone has a partner at 7am. Get a recommendation for brekkie and perhaps a fun activity date for later in the day.

Art galleries, bookstores and museums

There’s nothing more engaging than an animated conversation about favourite (and hated) artists, authors or points in history. It’s a quiet space, away from prying eyes, and for the young stillliving-at-home crowd, the perfect excuse to get out. No parent will say ‘no’ to an education! Even if you don’t find love, you might learn something.

At the gaming arcade

Up the stakes. Sidle alongside the object of your attention and try to beat his or her high score. Loser takes the winner out for coffee (or gummy bears or frosted cupcakes), so lose real bad! You could try this at the bowling alley, or even at one of the karting tracks in Goa.

Sing for the unknown lover Head to a karaoke bar, pick your favourite songs and belt it out. There could be someone out there who thinks you’re talented. Avoid singing songs about broken hearts and lost loves; those might make you seem stuck in the past.

Join a club

Try bird-watching, taking a cooking class, going biking or learning a new language. Sharing interests does a couple make. You get better at what you signed up for and voilà, you now have a partner in crime after the course is over.

Romance At The Beach

Online dating websites and regular forums

Sign up for a tour with a travel company

These may seem a little frumpy at first, but the plethora of such websites is only testimony to their success. It’s wise to use caution on the internet these days, but who said love is devoid of risk? Be honest online, as you would on a virtual date, and there’s no telling which gorgeous geek will be yours someday.

Sometimes you just need to see new places with new faces. There will always be somewhere you’ve wanted to see, and if you’ve earlier put it off for lack of company, go it alone this time. Single travellers are fun, and beautiful places can initiate romance.

You might have certain restrictions or a set of values you find hard to share with potential dates. Attending meets organised by religious groups or other communities that reflect your preferences is a good place to hook up with like-minded people.

These are one of the unlikely places one would think of as romantic, and they rarely are. But you’d be surprised by how much someone’s choice of fruity flavoured shampoo over citrus aromas, or pepper banana chips over baked potato crisps can tell you about their personalities. And if telling someone their favoured cosmetics company tests on animals gets you the stink eye, you can always move on to someone else.

This is where you meet friends of friends of friends, when your pals are cosying up in corners and couldn’t care about playing Cupid for you anymore. The bigger the party, the more singles you’re likely to meet. A drink or two helps loosen up tongues, so awkward silences will be to a minimum and random chit chat free flowing.

Joanne, J&A’s and the magic of a Goan evening By Ananda Krishna

I started feeling rain and started swirling to it till it all went insane.” Joanne Fernandes

I don’t think I’m alone in my belief that Joanne Fernandes has one of the most beautiful voices in the music scene in Goa. It has the power to arrest and the subtlety to transport you to another place. Add to this the lovely Mediterranean decor of J&A’s Little Italy restaurant in Baga, the silver moonlight suspended above your head and a glass of Sangria with the finest of home cooked Italian food in Goa. All the elements were in place and all one had to do was to let go and enjoy the evening. J&A’s is true to the charm of Goa. Soft and inviting with a classic ambience, the restaurant has retained its authenticity for the last nineteen years (its longevity alone makes it a true Goan phenomenon!). “We were known as the first specialty restaurant in Goa. People laughed and said ‘Italian in Goa!’”, says Jamshed, owner of J&A’s. Anuraddha, who doesn’t like dessert, swears with her life on the Chocolate Souffle and she also recommends the Beef Carpaccio here. I also ate a delicious parma ham pizza with a bed of rocket leaves – pure heaven! Oh, and did I mention the pastas? Don’t take my word for it. Come here and try for yourself. The Italian food at J&A’s is sublime. Aside from J&A’s cuisine, of course, the evening’s draw was Joanne Fernandes on vocals and guitar, with Warren D’Mello on guitar and Alister D’sa on percussion. The trio drew inspiration from Pink Floyd, Alice in Chains and, most notably, Tracy Chapman. To our pleasant surprise, Joanne also threw in a few of her own numbers. One particularly moving piece of hers is ‘Outside My Box’, which talks of her journey to break free. Winner of the Voice of Goa competition in 2006, Joanne has established a reputation as one of the finest singers in this part of the world. It takes just seconds of hearing her to understand that there is something extraordinary about Joanne and her soulful voice. “There are no boundaries. It’s all about experimenting,” she explains. J&A’s will be putting on these kinds of wonderful evenings for the next 12 weeks. As if their world-class Italian food weren’t enough! I for one am not complaining. There’s magic in this little spot on the banks of the Baga River. All power to you, J&As!

oung author/novelist Yashodhana Raj juggles many talents. She is currently doing her Bachelors in international economics, management and finance at Bocconi in Milan. She is also an intern at the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) Vienna Liaison. She has lived in Mumbai, New Delhi, Tel Aviv and Vienna and is currently living in Milan. Yashodhana wrote Dragon in My Heart, her first novel, about a teenager, Ria Mehra, who had found the perfect guy, had loving parents, a caring brother and a group of best friends. But everything young Ria has ever known changes when she finds out that her real life wasn’t what she had thought all along. Her identity had been kept a secret even from her. Ria is actually a fire dragon – a Vraishk (the protector), in human form. She is enigmatic, volatile and powerful. She is also unsure, apprehensive and vulnerable. Ria suddenly finds herself uprooted from her normal life and is thrown into the middle of a war between good and evil. Will Ria recognize herself and accept who she has become? Or will she succumb to the mysteries and lose her identity? Dragon in My Heart is a story about a girl’s journey of love, choices, circumstances and adventures where, in the end, Ria has to decide if she has the strength to believe in herself. A quick and easy read for a young adult. Or grown-ups who are still children at heart.

Excerpt I could not recognize myself. The girl looking at me from the mirror had an angst expression. I took a few steps towards the mirror, my body started acting on its own accord. Then my back arched in agony as I felt my body split into a hundred pieces, my chest writhed in pain. I was screaming without even opening my lips. The voice was not of pain though, it was of antagonism, of passionate hatred and aggression, and then astonishingly it became shallow from panicked fear. Something was changing, and I didn’t know what. But what frightened me was that I didn’t care. All I could sense was the huge bubble of anger, resentment and torture that was bursting through my body. I felt like my whole body was slowly burning, like the fire inside me was bursting out and wanted to submerge me in it. But I didn’t care, because I wanted it to happen. Beads of sweat were mixing with the rain drops on my body and I was feeling so hot. I opened my clothes and threw them on the floor, trying to cool my body by discarding pieces of

useless clothing. I stood in front of the huge mirror, watching my naked self and I didn’t care how I looked because there was something happening to my body. My back was burning. Huge red marks were forming on my neck, my back, around my spine and my belly, and in a second those red marks took shape of something completely astounding - a dragon. My body burned like I was on fire. The dragon was on my back. Her head on my left scapula, her body covering my spinal cord, and her tail coming around my waist and circling around my midriff. Her body was elegantly covered by huge delicate wings that gently twitched; her eyes were closed as if she was sleeping. With every breath that I took, I felt her chest rise. I felt her presence like it was a real being. I could feel her breathing, her gently snorting, hear the slight rustling of her wings. It was unbelievable. Not true, not real… But, I didn’t trust my voice, almost believing that if I spoke, I would wake her up from her deep slumber. I just looked at her, anger still boiling in me and the shock eclipsing me away from reality. “Get away.” My voice echoed off the walls of my room, challenging my mental state. It was hoarse from my screaming and frightened from the sudden aberrant happenings. She stirred slightly and slowly opened her eyes. I gave an involuntary shudder. Her eyes were red and cat like. They were like drops of blood that pierced through my entire body. My eyes froze on those

eyes, captivated and enamored. My eyes gingerly climbed up from her body to see my entire reflection, but it was not I who was standing there, it was she. Her red eyes had now become my eyes. All I could see was red. Everything was red. But maybe that was because of the fire that was now starting. It was licking my body, enveloping me at its core. But I felt nothing. The fire did not leave a single scorch mark on my body. That fire which was emitting out from the core of my body. I was engulfed in its flames. It danced around the room like gypsies and ran like escaped refugees. My entire room was ablaze. The curtains were in flames, the bed was charred, and slowly my reflection in the mirror disappeared as the mirror sweltered. I changed from having frightened eyes to eyes with a glint of craze and madness, because the sudden cavorting red around me was my creation, I was able to control the flames. It refused to hurt me. I stood in the middle of the fire twirling the threads of flames in sporadic figures. The images in my mind, I could conjure up in front of me. My hands lifted and fell by itself as the fire traced its patterns. Then my hands moved faster and the patterns started forming in fast blurs, faster and faster when suddenly the madness was emitting out in the flames, they were running away, everywhere. The dancing flames were teasing me, escaping my hands and moving around, eagerly immersing my entire room into its spirit… V

A

ssault, theft, drunkenness – these are just a few examples of the ‘entertainment’ that’s been floating around the friendly skies with alarming frequency of late. From biting a flight attendant’s leg to drinking liquid soap from the loo to Mr. Eau de Booze, who got so wasted and dangerously belligerent that he had to be duct taped. And all this is just the beginning. On a flight from Moscow to London, a woman performed a 15-minute erotic dance where she fondled other passengers as part of her act. A man flying from Japan to San Francisco slapped his wife several times after landing and then sued the airline for supplying him with too much wine, which he claimed brought on the violence. Finally, the ickiest of them all, three separate passengers on three separate flights got piss drunk and began relieving themselves anywhere and everywhere except in the loo - Ugh! Even the crew don’t seem to be immune to this loony cabin fever. Remember the JetBlue flight steward who hurled obscenities at passengers over the PA system, then deployed the inflatable emergency chute, slid down and fled? Let’s take a look at some other truly bizarre in-flight behaviours that made crew and fellow passengers long for some regular, run-of-the-mill turbulence. Last month, Jenny Lauren, the 41-year-old niece of fashion icon Ralph Lauren (and herself a luxury jewellery designer) was charged with being so boozed up on a flight from Barcelona to New York that the pilot had to make an emergency landing in Ireland to get her booted off the plane. Evidently, she was so verbally abusive that the crew decided she posed a danger to herself and other passengers. In 2006, a self-described peace activist disrupted a London-to-Washington flight by going berserk, making reference to al Qaeda and assorted hijackings. She acted bizarrely for hours, and after urinating in the aisle she was restrained by two passengers. The flight made an emergency landing in Boston under escort by two military jets. About three years back Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin went ballistic as he waited for a delayed American Airlines flight from LAX to New York to depart. He became irate after crew asked him to stop playing Words With Friends on his phone, slamming the bathroom door, pounding the wall and using offensive language. I have some air-hostess friends who would cringe when they were assigned to fly a certain sector, knowing full well

from previous painful experiences, that passengers embarking from a particular city were more likely to be boorish and demanding. One such flight involved a group of tourists from the Zhejiang province in China who stole 30 sets of stainless steel tableware from the plane, handing them back only when their tour guide warned them they could face punishment back home. I recently took a flight to Mumbai to

Goa and was seated near two men who, separated by a gap of one row, began shouting out suggestions to each other on what type of sandwich to order. To add insult to the already injured eardrums, a gang of 20-something girls, sitting directly behind me, decided to launch into a loud recount of their previous Goan holiday, peppered with gory details as to what type of guy chatted them up, bought them exotic

cocktails and where they threw up afterwards. Groan. I hate to break the news, but we Indians make some of the worst flying companions on the planet. Uncontrolled children yelling and running around at all hours, food trays left in the aisles, people shoving to get to the front of the boarding line. To be fair, though, considering the challenging times we live in, there’s no denying the other contributing factors to bad behaviour on board aircrafts - long lines at the check-in counters, over-booked flights and the tension of excess and lost baggage – all of which would probably make even the saintliest among us throw a hissy fit and possibly earn a spot on the no-fly list. Most of us today (crew and passengers) probably need to undergo an anger management workshop before and meditation course after any flying experience. A far cry from the days when getting to travel by plane was like going to a cool party; I remember the excitement with which one would pick out an outfit and hope to have someone ‘interesting’ sitting on the next seat. Nowadays, its sweat pants and a warm baggy shirt sans make-up and my only prayer to the Almighty is that I don’t end up with a screaming kid next to me. The Lonely Planet issued a Passengers’ Bill of Rights in July 2011 based on a survey they conducted of behaviour on airplanes; annoyances listed include prodding the entertainment console on the back seat, unpleasant aromas (stinking feet and body odour), unruly children etc. But the most common word used was … LOUD! The sad reality is that there’s really no excuse-nor solutionfor abhorrent behaviour on flights. Nowadays, when I see someone off at the airport, my parting words have changed from ‘Hope you have a Safe flight’ to ‘May Peace be with you’. V

Give Back

GIM and One Billion Rising

W

hat do you do when girls are not sent to school or given medicines when sick or are treated with disdain or even physical violence? You rise up. That’s what you do. And sometimes, you rise up with a billion others. One Billion Rising gathered together a billion people in 207 countries last year to demand an end to violence against women. This year, on Feb. 14, it’s happening again, with people from around the world rising up to demand justice for women. One caring college, the Goa Institute of Management (GIM), is doing something very special as part of this worldwide movement. GIM understands that the need of the hour is to let young people know what can be done to make the world a better place, for women and for everyone. It’s not just about acquiring degrees. Young folk have to forge

their own path, doing whatever they can do persuade their friends, family, neighbors, and fellow Goans and Indians to join them in a mission for sustainable development. Part of the GIM’s core course of its management program is a Corporate Social Responsibility drive. Students are encouraged to give back to society in every way they can. That’s how a group of students initiated a club called 'Samarthan' under the 'Centre for Social

Sensitivity and Action'. Samarthan is a platform where the gap between ideas and actions is bridged. Samarthan has organized social events for Woman Empowerment, Health and Hygiene and Career opportunities for students. It has also been organizing discussions towards engaging the youth in finding sustainable solutions to problems such as solid waste management. Now Samarthan members feel it is necessary to make people aware

of women’s rights. Goans need to be sensitized to women’s issues – safety & equality, mainly. To do that, Samarathan is planning a very special event - to show the world what justice looks like. It could be an apology. It could be legal action. It could be naming or shaming the guilty! It could be a call to revolt! It could simply be a DANCE! Samarthan plans to light a spark through dance. Watch out for the Samarthanians in the coming days. You may just be pleasantly surprised. V
