Grand Hyatt Goa successfully hosts The Garden of Dreams, the finest party of the year!
C
learly marking its superiority over others, Grand Hyatt Goa successfully hosted the finest party of the night. The Garden of Dreams set the bar for a mystical night of entertainment, fiesta amidst great fanfare and grandeur. A full house even before the party began, the Garden of Dreams saw participation from the hotel patrons, locals and international and local tourists all raising their glasses to welcome the New Year in style. This grand, New Year’s Eve celebration, was truly an escape from reality, where Grand Hyatt Goa ensured that the guests were transported to a bygone era of unparalleled enchantment through the remarkable performances. The live fountain emerging from the water body at the Garden of Dreams entrance was one of the major attraction along with the zorbing ball that engulfed the magical elf as the guest had a magical walk in. The enchanting décor and set up was a glimpse of another world, with scrumptious canapés served on swings that were dangling from the tree while the candy girls and dancers performed various mystical acts. The theatrical night started from 9:00 pm and the evening was only whimsical and captivating one that began with an enchanting Queen, who welcomed the guests with her Dark Knights along with grand music. The night aimed to weave a dreamy tapestry of artistry, surrealism and theatrical performance sprawling across the lawns of Grand Hyatt Goa. The
audience was amazed with the jaw dropping acts, larger than life performances like ‘Silver Strings’ – a Violin Girl’s Band who played spellbinding music, mesmerizing dance acts by International dancers, progressive electro/house music by DJ Dev who built the night towards a glittery 2015. Mr. Jaco Le Roux, General Manager of the resort said “We at Grand Hyatt Goa, wanted to give our guests a fairytale experience and after getting non-stop reviews from our happy guests, I’d likto believe we have successfully attained our goal.” The Garden of Dreams is one of the many avenues, owned by Grand Hyatt Goa that aims at engaging with the multitude of people exposed to hospitality sector. Grand Hyatt Goa is the only luxury hotel and resort to ensure over 50 exciting patron-engaging activities in India.

Rockin’ Goa This Weekend Don’t Miss It!
I
f you are a lover of EDM and rock and are always looking to hear head-thumping, high-energy music live - and not just on Sound Cloud or 9 Tracks - then the year’s first music festival, ZimaFest 2015, is your destination. Zima – the Russian word for ‘winter’ - is the celebration of the season on the warm sunny beaches of Goa, making it India’s Newest Live Musical Festival which will witness an amalgamation of the best culture and music of Russia and India at La Brise, Candolim, Goa from 24th -25th January, 2015. Goa’s tranquil waves will absorb loud sound and melodic vibration on the first long weekend of 2015 with ZimaFest’s focus on live acts. ZimaFest will present a musical program with performances by Russian and Indian rock bands, such as the cult Russian group NIGHT SNIPERS, a team with a rich history of twelve years, Dolphin (also from Russia), poet and experimenter, whose work fans have long loved for its honest and candid lyrics, as well as Parikrama (India) - a unique group from New Delhi, who have played more than 3,000 concerts. Also playing are two of India’s coolest bands, Madboy/Mink and F-16’s (funk and electro-pop). ZimaFest has not forgotten the fans of electronic music and has brought together great artists from the EDM community. Headlining Saturday 24th evening will be Karsh Kale (India), who over the past 12 years as a solo artist, producer, composer and DJ has turned the world of electronic fusion upside down and helped create a whole new genre of music and culture. And at the centre of Sunday’s program will be DJ Avalon (UK) - one of the most famous representatives of the international psy-trance scene. He has worked with such DJs as Tristan, Astrix, Loud, and is currently ranked first in many charts with his new creation «Avalon remixes». Also at the festival, you can enjoy performances by your favourite DJs from Belgium, Argentina, Switzerland, India and many other countries, delighting you with their sublime musical sets. I think that if the government would allow visas on arrival for people like myself and my husband British through and through, you would have no difficulty in filling hotels and beach shacks. We have been coming to Goa for the last 14 years. We love the weather, the people and the food, but the one thing that is an absolute pain, is applying for a visa. It’s time consuming, the website isn’t particularly easy to navigate, then you have to print off 4 x A4 sheets per person and post off to the visa centre, not knowing if you will get it back in time for your holiday, plus the cost was doubled
last year. (If things don’t change), I am afraid we will be looking elsewhere for our annual holiday, somewhere where we feel wanted. I say this with a heavy heart because of all the places we have been fortunate to visit Goa, stands out, mainly because of its lovely welcoming citizens, which over the years have become friends. I hope the Goan people get treated better by their government, because they deserve much more, they are so hard working. Cecilia Barber

Blown Away By Combat Cage Fight Night
T
here were nervous whispers as spectators awaited the start of India’s debut Combat Cage Fight Night, but these soon turned to cheering, whistles and hoots. Tito’s Courtyard in Baga was a milling crowd of around 1,500 excited guests as the first name in entertainment sport in the country got underway on January 18, 2015. Following an electric ambience at the weighins at Café Mambo in Baga on Saturday, January 17, 2015, the fighters gave the crowd a nail-biting experience as they played deadly games in a locked teel cage. From across India, 12 fighters went head to head in single combat, with six bouts that mentally and physically challenged each of them to their limits. Combat cage fighting is a safe, regulated, competitive sport that involves a combination of martial arts techniques within the restrictions of a confined space. The main sponsor of India’s first Combat Cage Fight Night was Magners Irish Cider in association with Vh1. Other supporters included Café Mambo, Go Pro, XXX Tequila and Goa Tourism. The event was powered by Tito’s and VIVA GOA magazine, with What’s Up Goa being the online media partner and Spangle as the digital marketing partner. Manipal Hospital came on board as the medical partner for the event. Goa’s Nelson Paes was the hero of the night, with a knock-out punch that secured him the title of the main event. The Muay Thai-style fighter from Thivim, north Goa, took out Delhi’s Vivek Sharma whose fighting style of Wushu did not gain him many points. Earlier, four three-round bouts were held in different weight categories. Amit Kumar from Orissa knocked out Srikant Sekhar from Delhi in the welterweight category. Between the bantamweights, Rohit Punder from Uttar Pradesh was the better fighter, taking down Haryana’s Sachin Panwar. Alfaan Hashmi from Nasik in Maharashtra overthrew his middleweight opponent Michael Pereira from Mumbai. Among the lightweights, Maharashtra’s Tajodin Saiyed won the bout he fought against Punjab’s Suraj Bahadur. The Rise of CHOGM Road By Sanket Sharma
If it weren’t for the British Empire and Indira Gandhi, this success story might never have been told. You see, when Goa was chosen as the venue for the 1983 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting – a huge honour at the time – the Indian prime minister didn’t want the visiting dignitaries to spend an eternity to get from the airport to the summit at Fort Aguada. Thus was born CHOGM Road, connecting Porvorim with the North Goa beach belt, as a convenience for the visiting heads of government from the former territories of the British Empire. Visitors, especially foreign ones, mostly assume the word “chogm” belongs to some exotic Indian tongue. But no, it is in fact the acronym for Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. And it wasn’t just the presidents and prime ministers in Goa for the weeklong summit who benefitted from this shortcut. For the past 32 years, Goans and visitors alike have used it to get to the beach. Now, this one-time “connector” road is fast becoming an extraordinary destination of its own. New businesses – including some of the finest shops and restaurants in the state – are popping up, and land values and rents are rising rapidly. The addition in recent months of some notable newcomers – Koyla Restaurant, Café Basilico Bistro & Deli, Freedom Tree Home Store, Saraya café/ gallery/guesthouse, Once Again Salon, Poshak store, Cremeux Bakery, Naivedhya Restaurant and, most recently, Jáshn Indian Kitchen Bar & Lounge – underscores the speed of the transformation. If you go back more than a couple of months to the past two or three years, the newcomers also include Kudos Restaurant, Glow Salon, the Backyard Bar & Restaurant, the Paperboat Collective store, Maracas, Matsya Sagar and Bhojan restaurants, Baker’s Street and Carasid bakeries, and of course, Goa Streets, the News & Entertainment weekly you are reading now.
How a once sleepy ‘connector’ road is becoming a destination in itself
Add to that some of the establishments that have been around a while longer – the Rust and Saudade furniture stores, Maple Leaf supermarket, Angel’s Resort, and Viva Delhi restaurant, with its delicious Indian and Western offerings (as well as a highly professional catering service featuring live counters) - and you get a complete picture of a gentrified, bustling sphere. "A city grows by the roads it makes," says Richa Narvekar, an urban planner. “As the movement on the roads become more frequent, it’s only a matter a time that that space will claim its own identity". This is exactly what’s happened to CHOGM Road, which is not only attracting builders, businessmen, entrepreneurs and residents, but also tourists, a word that often makes local residents cringe, but is
synonymous with profit to those in business. "It’s restful and peaceful, and for businesses like ours it’s perfect," says Latika Khosla, whose beautiful new home store Freedom Tree has recently opened its doors to the public in the quiet village of Sangolda. "When you go to a home store, you
need leisurely time and space to explore what you need, and our space caters to just those needs," adds Latika, a wellknown designer. Just across the street from Freedom Tree is Rust, another wonderful store carrying gorgeous home furniture along with other offerings, including a stunning fashion collection from the designer Pudu. Some business owners on CHOGM Road fear competition from newcomers. But most likely their concerns are misplaced. The district, after all, is a growing pie, and as more establishments and customers appear, the area’s growth should bring more revenue for all. So when new restaurants like Koyla, serving up “ethnic Indian” food, or Kudos, with its yummy pizzas and sizzlers, suddenly arise, old timers like Navtara or Bhojan need not worry – as the newcomers’ presence simply brings more patrons to the area. The Backyard, with its grooving Saturday night parties with live music (a favourite destination for ladies, by the way), and the Paperboat Collective, with its curated mix of handcrafted designer products, do the exact same thing: help complete the transformation of CHOGM Road into a Goan hotspot. Speaking of hotspots, one notable one is Saraya, an entirely unique concept in Goa – an art gallery, café, and bed & breakfast rolled into one. There are tree houses and mud huts and live
music and artistic renditions in every corner. The pizzas, sandwiches and aloo parathas are also worth checking out! The rise of CHOGM Road has certainly not been lost on authorities, who have taken it upon themselves to institute some welcome improvements – including sidewalks, fresh pavement, roundabouts and attractive new street lights. Their plans to widen CHOGM Road have been met with fierce protests from businesses and residents who stand to lose property. Speaking of residents, the road’s transformation has not been greeted happily by all. The area, after all, has long been an oasis of tranquillity boasting wide paddy fields, peacocks and gorgeous old Indo-Portuguese houses (Goa Streets is in one of them). Yes, many of these things still exist, but locals often feel the zone’s character is being lost. “Outsiders are taking over this place,” said one disgruntled woman who asked that her name not be used. “We want things the way they were.” To be sure, it’s not the first area of Goa that has seen this kind of transformation, and it won’t be the last. Happily, however, the one taking place on CHOGM Road appears to be respecting the region’s harmony and serenity. Calangute it is not. The prime ministers and presidents for whom it was built were here for just a week 32 years ago. But the road’s legacy is proving to be grand.

Chandni Chowk: World-Class North Indian Cuisine Chef/Restaurateur Xavs Norr strikes again!
By Shubham Gupta
H
aving spent much of the past year in Goa, I must admit I miss the food I grew up with in Delhi, Gurgaon and Punjab. Even though Goa’s restaurant scene is diverse and blessed with excellence in many quarters, I’ve been disappointed with much of the North Indian cuisine on offer here. It may taste OK, but where is the accuracy? All this changed on the night of Jan. 21, when I stepped into a new eatery on the Baga-Calangute stretch called Chandni Chowk. As I entered, I felt right at home. With a blend of Punjabi tunes and music from Delhi-based rock bands like Parikrama and Advaita, the place resembled some of the North Indian restaurants I used to frequent in the national capital region. Then came a zest of charcoal and tandoori masala that captivated my senses. Served before you even order is a ‘Bhindi Kurkure’ - deep
fried okra and onions tossed in Chandni Chowk’s signature chaat masala. It was a promising start to an evening that only got better from there. Should any of this surprise me? No, not really. That’s because Chandni Chowk is the latest venture of Xavs Norr, the incredibly talented and creative Goan chef/ restaurateur who also runs Tin Tin in Vagator and Route 66 in Panjim. If you’ve been to either of these places, you would have known to expect greatness from Chandni Chowk as well. Next on my table was a platter of assorted kebabs, and I have to say Xavs totally nailed the malai tikka, chunks of chicken marinated in cream and garlic paste, roasted in a traditional tandoor and garnished with ‘Kasturi methi’ (fenugreek), fresh cream and chopped cilantro. It melted in my mouth. One marvellous detail was that both the varieties of seekh kebabs were seasoned and marinated differently, and to perfection. Chandni Chowk hit the bull’s eye with both the chicken tikka and its
vegetarian cousin, the paneer tikka (made from home-made paneer). At this point, something magical arrived. Who would have thought that something as simple as onion rings dunked in yogurt and chaat masala could be so splendid? My table was soon topped with some of my favourite dishes from my years in North India, and a few I had never even tasted. I could smell Butter Chicken, Paneer Khurchan, Daal Makhani and Bhindi Amchuri along with assorted Indian breads. When I dove into the Butter Chicken, I stopped taking notes for this article because of this fact: It was among the top 5 Butter Chickens I had tasted anywhere, and by far the best in Goa (believe me, I have had A LOT of Butter Chicken). As more dishes arrived, I was reminded of the food my mom cooks at home. Paneer Khurchan, home-made paneer cooked while stuck to the inside-edges of a deep pan and scraped out, was particularly
nostalgic for me. Another flavourful memory is of the Dal Makhani. In good cooking, details matter, and I was pleased to see that tiny Delhi and Punjabi details like adding kidney beans and garnishing the dish with cilantro and butter were not ignored. The Bhindi Amchuri was cooked in a sourtasting dried mango powder, something that I had never experienced before. I couldn’t stop eating it. It’s extremely noteworthy that Xavs Norr, the man who serves up world-class Spanish tapas and delectable American beef burgers, is also behind the BEST BUTTER CHICKEN in Goa. Kudos Xavs! And viva Chandni Chowk! • Food: Some of the best North Indian in the state • Service: Zero complaints • Ambience: Inviting, unpretentious • Something Special: Hello! The Butter Chicken! • Contact: 096239 22796 Address: Nxt. to Infantaria, Baga Road

he saying that “India grows at night while the government sleeps” is not exactly apt when it comes to wine. To be sure, we have quite a ways to go before achieving the status of France, Italy, Spain, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, the U.S., or Australia. But wine is a rare area where authorities and the private sector – especially in Maharashtra and Karnataka – have come together to create something extraordinary. Even if we’re not yet on the global connoisseurs’ map as a “wine country,” we now boast scores of entirely decent wineries, the industry is growing quickly and, best of all, the product in many cases actually tastes good. The main reason India is assuming its rightful position on the roster of wine countries can be boiled down to a single word: growth. It seems that for every Indian who jumps from the lower class to the middle class, and from the middle class to the upper class, a new wine aficionado is created. True, India’s per capita wine consumption is a tiny fraction of what it is in much of Europe (interesting fact: the Vatican has the world’s highest wine consumption at 54 litres per person per year – not a bad reason to become Catholic!). Still, India’s consumption rate has risen by more than 50 percent in the past five years alone. And when it comes to wine appreciation in India, Goa is at the vanguard. This week’s Grape Escapade in Panjim, as in previous years, is being billed as a “lifestyle” festival featuring food, wines and “everything Goan.” Organized by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation, the Grape Escapade will be taking place over four evenings, from Jan.

23 – 26. It’s India’s biggest wine festival, where kids can muck about in a grape stomping pool while parents hop from stall to stall, checking out new wines and stocking up on favourites. There’s food and entertainment, attracting tens of thousands of tourists and locals alike to the D. B. Bandodkar Grounds in Campal, Panjim. Bands like Crimson Tide, Alcatrazz, Carlos and Friends will perform, besides acts by dancers Darren and Raquel, African acrobats, a beauty pageant and the popular Kingfisher Voice of Goa contest. The festival is a good excuse to take a closer look at the wine revolution now sweeping the country – a tribute to that magical liquid that first appeared in this land during the Indus Valley Civilisation. So what if India doesn’t have the best climate in the world for grape growing? Or if waiters at a typical restaurant can’t tell the difference between a Malbec and a Riesling? Or if an entire state doesn’t even allow you to drink it (well, at least they gave us Narendra Modi)? The wine industry is pumping in large sums of money into research and development, particularly in the Western part of Maharashtra where most of India’s wine is produced. The
W
government-run Grape Processing and Research Institute, in southwestern Maharashtra, is tasked with helping India’s winemakers produce highquality wines that meet international standards. India’s commerce ministry estimates the country’s wine exports will touch US $50 million by this year. That’s up from just $5 million just two years ago. Indian wines are now being exported to Europe, the US, Japan and other global markets. The vast majority of India’s wines (more than 90) are located in Maharashtra, though Karnataka has set up a similar program, with more than a dozen wineries there as well. Prahlad Sukhtankar is the sommelierowner of the Black Sheep Bistro in Panjim, well known for its extensive selection of wines by the glass as well as a regular ‘Wine Table’ event where guests learn about wines through tastings and the basics of food-pairing. “Wines made from grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon tend to move faster because they tend to be the more commonly known grape varietals that most wine companies focus on,” Prahlad explains. “However, an increasing number of well-travelled clients are catching up with the globally trending varietals such as Tempranillo and Malbec among red wines and new and interesting white wine varietals such as Macabeo, Riesling and Gewurztraminer.” “There’s a new product coming to the market almost every month which is a great trend for India,” Prahlad adds. Kapil Biyani is learning to be a wine sommelier and operates a wine club called TWG Select for connoisseurs in Goa. His vacations revolve around vineyard visits all over the world and he has a prized collection of fine wines. He wants to start a wine mutual fund, where
ine lovers in Goa gathered to witness an evening filled with good taste as Pause wines, the niche and premium Indian wine maker, extended its wine portfolio with new and classic additions. Wine experts, influencers and wine enthusiasts enjoyed the newly launched varietals along with the winemaker’s exquisite range of existing wines at Panjim’s The Crown Goa Hotel. Pause Wines is a company nurturing, cultivating and offering premium wines. Chairperson and Managing Director of Pause Wines, Mr. Rajesh Patil opened the tasteful evening by touching upon Pause wines’ journey so far and the company’s future plans making it a perfect occasion to raise a toast. Goa’s love for wine that dates back to the 16th century was rekindled as wine lovers sampled Pause’s latest additions, Pause Chenin Blanc, Pause
connoisseurs will invest in wines of specific vintage for self-consumption or investment. Kapil shares that “In India, I like wines from smaller boutique vineyards (producing) Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Bruts, which are sparkling wines from the Valley de Vin winery, also known as Zampa in Nashik.” “Another favourite vineyard is Reveilo. Their Syrah Reserve is the one I’ll toast to. If you like an oak barreled Chardonnay with a smooth creamy finish, you’ll like Reveilo’s Chardonnay Reserve,” Kapil adds. Sunder Aaron, a Panjim-based entrepreneur, is a fan of Sula, particularly their ‘Secco’ varietal. He says, “I think that Indian wines have shown improvement every year. I’ve also seen new vineyards launching frequently, and that’s terrific.” He will be launching his rotisserie chicken brand ‘Chicken Man’ at the Grape Escapade festival this year. “Grape Escapade may place an emphasis on wines, but good food is pretty important too. We are opening February 1st, so I’m excited to get the word out.” Sachin Bhamri of Myra Vineyards says their mid-premium range has fared well in Goa to date, including the varietals like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s the first time they’re participating in the festival which he says is an ideal platform to showcase their wines to quintessential wine lovers. “The event concept echoes Myra’s brand belief that ‘wine is all heart’, whilst making the entire process fun and uncomplicated.” Kapil agrees that events like the Grape Escapade are a great place to taste from different wineries and decide for yourself which wine suits your palate. “From it’s humble beginnings in INOX courtyard, the event has grown in the last couple of years and has surpassed other city events like Mumbai and Pune in terms of glamour, entertainment value, footfalls and of course the vineyard selection.” Events like the Grape Escapade are also crucial to promote the wine industry and position Goa as a tourist destination. While the wine market is
Sauvignon Blanc, Pause Ruby Red and Pause Cabernet Sauvignon. Soon, the customary see, swirl, smell and sip led to a unanimous ‘cheers’ that echoed in every corner of the elite evening. Pause’s wine tasting evening also featured an absorbing talk by India’s leading wine expert Ajit Balgi on some interesting wine and food pairings for the Indian palate. He addressed that while it is common to associate wine primarily with European cuisines, there are ways to meticulously pair wine with Indian dishes and enjoy a delectable combination with Indian spices and flavors as well.
growing, some wine importers such as Prestige wines are feeling the impact of a slow tourist season and have decided not to participate in the festival this year. “Restaurants are not doing well and business altogether is not as expected due to the decrease in foreign tourists. There is lot of uncertainty in the market and we hope things will get better in 2015.” Big Banyan also echoes this sentiment, although they will be present at the Grape Escapade. Their fastest selling varietals are the Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. New entrants like Pause Wines that have just launched four new varieties are enthusiastic about the market potential, however. The managing director Rajesh Patil says, “Though wine is gradually gaining popularity in India, it is yet to become an integral part of people’s regular lives here.” Kapil Biyani says that while cheaper blends are often served at parties and in restaurants, “the ‘symbolic’ bar needs to be raised higher.” “Restaurant owners complain of less wine consumers and hence higher prices to retain their margins and wastage in open bottles,” Kapil continues. “And consumers shy away from wines in restaurants due to high prices. It’s a classic catch 22 situation, which only the restaurant/establishment owners can bring shape to.” Still, wine appreciation is undoubtedly on the rise in Goa and the rest of India. And this week we have a wonderful platform to appreciate – and savor – this liquid of the gods.
Through the evening, the attendees swirled and sipped through the enviable portfolio of Pause Wines. This included the latest reds, Cabernet Sauvignon and Ruby Red and whites Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. There was more for the discerning ones including Indian Nectar, Chardonnay, Merlot, Indian Classic, Indian Pearl, Puro White, Puro Red, Premium Port No.1 Red and not to forget Pause’s award winning Shiraz from the much loved wine portfolio already present in the Goan market.

The Good Life of Dr. Venkatesh Hegde By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello
Dr. Venkatesh Hegde is a physician, Art of Living teacher, singer, actor, poet, resource person amd social worker. Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello catches up with this multitalented personality at his Sri Sri Krupa Clinic in Margao.
L
iving the good life can mean many things. For some, it’s about riches. For Dr. Venkatesh Hegde, it’s about pursuing one’s passions in all their glory, and in the process touching the lives of others in deep, unequivocal ways. I had briefly met the good doctor at a Lion’s Club function last year in Navelim, where he was the Chief Guest. A graduate of the Goa Medical College, Dr. Hegde has been practicing medicine at the same Margao clinic since 1982. And for the past 32 years, he’s also been pursuing his passion for Marathi plays, singing, and teaching others the Art of Living. A young Venkatesh became president of the Cultural Wing of Gomant Vidya Niketan when it opened in 1977, enjoying a delightful platform for his interest in dramatics, singing, acting and other cultural pursuits. Along with his artist wife Sangeeta, Dr. Hegde played various roles in three Konkani plays, ‘Saunshaykallol’, ‘Sharda,’ and ‘Tulshi’, which telecast on Doordarshan, both in Goa and Bombay. “Konkani and Marathi musical plays were revived at that time,” Dr. Hegde explains. Besides winning many prizes for cultural activities, he was awarded the State Award for singing about 15 years back. His passion for the arts is just part of the story of Venkatesh Hegde. For him, the good life is also very much about giving back to society. He and his wife have taken courses in the Art of Living, and have devoted a great deal of time sharing these stress-management methods with their fellow Goans. Dr. Hegde says, “Goa needs the ancient Indian techniques of relaxing the mind and the body. The Indian culture of yoga, meditation and breathing exercises is rich. I wanted
to teach Goans how to manage their emotions and thoughts.” Today, the Art of Living Course is held in Goa for different age groups. In this 6-day course (2 hours on each day), children aged 8 to 12 years, and teenagers aged 13 to 18 years are instructed by Sangeeta. Dr. Hegde teaches adults aged 18 years and above. The courses are taught at various places in Goa, including Margao and Panjim. Dr. Hegde says, “We teach the course to create more Art of Living teachers who will propagate this philosophy. In Goa, there are 40 such teachers; we have trained 25 of them.” He also teaches the 4-day residential Art of Living programme. Being the only advanced course teacher in the region, he also travels to neighbouring states to impart his knowledge. The Art of Living Course helps people to reduce stress and control diabetes, depression, blood pressure and heart ailments. It also increases enthusiasm for work, relaxes the state of mind, slows down aging, and facilitates good interpersonal relationships. Dr. Hegde comments, “We teach a breathing technique called Sudarshan Kriya. We also focus on delinking emotions from thoughts. Important human values such as honesty, truth, compassion, service, and friendliness are also highlighted.” Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the founder of the Art of Living Foundation, “has been inspirational in the lives of thousands of people. We also have a free course open to everyone. It is usually held in villages or organized for Municipality workers, etc. The paid course is usually attended by people who are stressed or suffer from stress-related disorders,” continues Dr. Hegde, adding that these courses are linked to the Art of Living International Centre in Bangalore. For Dr. Hegde, it’s not enough to spread the word about the art of living. It’s also important to put the sentiments into action. In recent years, Dr. Hegde and a group of like-minded peers organized a powerful drive against bribe taking and other forms of corruption, visiting many government offices, putting up ‘I am against corruption’ stickers, and making people aware of malpractices. The messages were stuck on the doors and tables of every minister. Art of Living has also organized blood donation camps every year. The project ‘Save Life India’ (www. savelifeindia.org), brainwave of Sameer Kunkolienkar and an initiative of Art of Living, is led by a volunteer team from
Goa and helps people register as blood donors. In November and December 2014, volunteers of Art of Living visited 200 schools from North and South Goa, organizing talks for 20,000 students on how to manage their thoughts and emotions. This project was led by volunteer Arman Bankley. Dr. Hegde says, “For the past 3 years, we have started a movement against suicide. We have a helpline number 9422063255 - my personal number. At times, I get calls even from UK and Dubai. We counsel people on phone and go to their homes if needed.” He adds, “Satisfaction in life comes through service. Happiness pours out from the practice of yoga and meditation. I have made many people alcohol free through medical treatment and Art of Living.” He says, “Patients need not only medications but also psychological support. At times, they get acidity or headaches, the root cause being psychological. Headaches can be due to tension or depression. I adopt a multidimensional approach when I deal with my patients.” With 32 years of private practice, he attends to patients with various medical and psychological complaints and takes night calls as well. He says, “My private practice is more socially oriented.” With a hectic schedule of seeing patients and conducting yoga sessions, Dr. Hegde is up at 5 am. After an hour and a half of yoga, he is at his clinic by 8 am. At times, he works for 20 hours. He quips, “People often wonder as to how I manage to work for so long. Though I am 57 years old, I have no health problems. No diabetes, no blood pressure and no heart problems.” Being a good public speaker, he has been invited as a resource person to schools and institutes, and as Chief Guest for many functions. In the past, he has been associated with Ganesh Utsav at Peepalkatta, Traditional Dindi Committee and the Lion’s Club. He also writes for various local dailies and loves writing poetry. With future plans of opening a Deaddiction and Rehabilitation Centre, Dr. Hegde says, “I want hospitals and prisons to be empty.” If more of us can learn to live the “good life” as Dr. Hegde lives it, those words could be more than just a dream.

magine a balmy night and a clear sky. A gentle crash of waves in the backdrop. And the seductive sound of a jazz quartet serenading by the sea. For a long time it was Kolkata. Then it was Mumbai. Now, Goa is slowly taking over the mantle of the jazz capital of India. Changing demographics, the emergence of a new generation of international tourists and foreign settlers craving quality music, and a pleasant collision of other critical catalysts, are combining to make Goa the new Eden of Jazz. It will feature Singapore's most celebrated jazz singer Marina Xavier with UK trumpet virtuoso Bob Tinker and local jazz icons Lenny Heredia on keyboards, Colin D'Cruz on bass and Lester Godinho on drums. onscious Voice is a new concept for lovers of music who are open to new ideas and new horizons. Offering a cross cultural, cross dimensional journey of voice, acoustic guitar, meditation and beats, the first event took place on Monday 19th January - coinciding with the new moon. Devised by healer and singer songwriter Natalie Matos, Conscious Voice encourages everyone to recognise the power of music in manifesting positive change. Natalie’s voice and songs offer heart-opening, thought-provoking listening, whilst Sandeep Srivastava of the Assagao Mehfil, brings the spiritual traditions of Indian classical music to the programme. The enchantment is magnified by the location, this first event taking place at Magic Forest in Anjuna, a boutique hotel which, as the name suggests, offers a forest area where the magic plays itself out. “I wanted to develop a new type of event that connects people not only with the music, but
with nature, and an awareness of the healing qualities of both. With little surprises throughout the night that will change with each performance, I hope this will become something that people can attend regularly, to enjoy, rejuvenate and manifest new positive choices,” explains Natalie. Last week’s surprises included a “manifestation” – where unwanted choices were consumed in a fire and new ones were embraced. They also included blindfolded incantations, sprayed fragrances and a sojourn into the magic forest. Natalie has thoughtfully embraced the themes of environment and community, and one of her songs, Love Over Gold, was inspired by last year’s Canacona building collapse that killed and injured dozens of people. The deeply moving ballad is about the choices we make. Natalie and Sandeep are now deciding on a date and location for their next magical evening. If it’s anything like the last one, something special is in store.

CSA (Catalysts for Social Action), a non-profit organization dedicated to the cause of child welfare and adoption for children living in child-care institutions, organized a capacity building workshop for caregivers of children’s homes. The workshop was conducted in the conference hall, Caritas holiday home, near Taj Vivanta, St.Inez, Panaji, Goa. In order to provide this care, it is important that each of these homes have well-trained staff and caregivers. Safety and care for children in the children's home is the result of collective action and constant efforts put together by the staff. Commenting on the same, Mr. Sidney Rocha, Director, CSA said, “We are glad to have capacity development workshops for caregivers who diligently work for underprivileged children in child care institutions in Goa with an intention to
help them in dealing with day-to-day challenges. Since we have been associated with child-care institutions very closely, we understand that we need to give the best possible care for children not only in terms of infrastructure facilities but also support them through emotional factors like compassion, love, affection and empathy.” Sethu’s Dr. Nandita De Souza, a developmental and behavioral pediatrician who has been working exclusively in the field of Child and family mental health for past 18 years, conducted this workshop. During the event, 33 caregivers from North Goa were present from different Government and Non Government Children’s Homes. To know more about CSA please visit us: www.csa.org.in
