Storylines • Augustana (27-6) won the NCAA Central Region Championship and will face Southeast Region Champion Clayton State (32-0) in the first round of the Elite Eight • The opening round of the Elite Eight will be played on Tuesday, March 26 with the Vikings taking on the Lakers at 12 p.m. central time. • If the Vikings win, they will face the winner of East region winner Dowling (28-3) and South Central Champ Colorado Mesa (31-1) who play at 2:30 p.m. • On the other half of the bracket., South region champion Nova Southeastern (23-8) will face Western Washington (28-3), winners of the West region at 6 p.m. • Closing the first round out, Atlantic region winner Gannon (31-4) squares off with Ashland (34-1) at 8:30 p.m. • A full NCAA Tournament bracket is available on page five

Vikings in the NCAA Tournament • Augustana is in uncharted territory for the women’s basketball program • The Vikings have never won more than a single game in the NCAA tournament and this is the first trip to the Elite Eight. • After three wins, the Vikings are 9-12 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with all 21 games being played under head coach Dave Krauth • The Vikings’ Central Region Championship was their first region title in the history of the program • It was also Augustana’s first appearance in a regional title game since 1992 • The Vikings have appeared in four of the past five tournaments and sixth since 2006 • On six occasions, the Vikings have bowed out to the eventual National Champion

Region recap • Augustana’s first region title in women’s basketball was not without drama as the Vikings wont heir final two games by a combined five points • In the opening-round game, the Vikings defeated fellow NSIC member Concordia-St. Paul for the first time in eight days. • The four Augustana seniors combined for 47 points as the Vikings rolled to a 78-66 win over the Golden Bears • Facing Southwestern Oklahoma State for the first time in women’s basketball history, the Vikings used a pair of late 3-pointers to edge out the Bulldogs • Faith Tinklenberg hit a go-ahead three with less than a minute left and Cami Koehn answered the SWOSU jumper with a triple of her own to give the Vikings their final lead • Koehn hit a pair of free throws to ice the game at 68-64 in favor of the Vikings. • The championship of the Central Region may have not appeared to be an instant classic when eh No.6 seed was pitted against the No. 8 seed, but the affair went down to mere tenths of a second. • Down one point, Alex Feeney grabbed an Emily Schulte miss as the clocked approached zero and her last-second heave from 12 feet was denied, but the referee had called a foul. • After much deliberation, the referees placed 0.7 seconds back on the clock and Feeney was at the line with a chance to win the game. • Feeney sank both free throws and Koehn intercepted the inbounds pass to seal the game for the Vikings, 75-74 • Feeney was named the Most Outstanding Player after pouring in 24 points in the championship game and a total of 54 points over the three games.

Reserves to the rescue • Augustana and Clayton State both rely heavily on their bench to carry an offensive load • The Viking reserves average 21.2 points per game or roughly 28.8 percent of the Augustana average of 75.6 points per game. • For the Lakers, their leading scorer by a large margin, has only started two games on the year. • Drameka Griggs averages 19.7 points per game, 8.4 more than any regular starter. • Paired with reserve center Shannon Smith, the two combine for 27.3 points per game, 36.1 percent of the Lakers’ scoring • Both teams feature very balanced scoring in their starting five • The Vikings have less than a six-point gap between their leading scorer, Alex Feeney at 14.4 points per game, and their lowest-scoring starter, Lydia Nelson at 8.9 points per game • Clayton State’s highest-scoring starter, Kayla Mobley, averages 11.3 points and the lowest, Kayla Pryce, scores 6.2 per game, a 5.1 point differential

Keeping an eye on turnovers • The Vikings and Lakers both force plenty of turnovers, but the straight numbers don’t tell the whole truth. • Clayton State owns a +6.6 turnover margin forcing 23.8 turnovers per game, which ranks third in NCAA Division II • However, the Lakers commit 17.2 turnovers per game which equates to 23.8 percent of their possessions ended in turnovers. • The Vikings turnover margin mark of +3.03 ranks 48th in Division II and they only force 16 turnovers per game. • Augustana does take care of the ball a bit better, committing just 13.2 turnovers a game, 18.8 percent of their offensive possessions.

Wins aplenty - Augustana records watch • The Vikings’ Central Region Championship victory was more than just hardware, the Vikings also passed a 24-year old record • This 2012-13 squad notched their 27th win, besting the mark of 26-4 the 1991-92 team amassed • This year’s team also moved into fourth on Augustana’s total scoring list for a season with 2,496 points. • They were aided by their 250made field goals this year which is also fourth in the record books • The Vikings have also grabbed 1,433 rebounds this season, which is just 60 total boards behind first place. • Augustana's mark of 75.2 percent free throw shooting is fourth all-time in Viking basketball history • The 2012-13 squad is also within striking distance of the top five in several more statistical categories. • The Vikings are just two blocked shots short of the fifth spot in the record books with 164 this season • At 557 assists, the Vikings are 22 shy of fifth place • Finally, the Vikings are within striking distance of fifth place in three-point field goal percentage at 34.4 percent shooting this season

Series Histories • The Vikings have only faced two of the seven other Elite Eight participants • Gannon and Western Washington are the only two schools with a history with Augustana • The Vikings wouldn’t face either of those teams until the Championship game • But, the Vikings do have a successful past against the two programs, but a very small sample size • Back in 1999 the Vikings took down Gannon in a 68-66 overtime thriller • Much more recently, The Vikings beat Western Washington 83-58 in 2007.

Neutral-izing the competition • The Vikings are a perfect 7-0 in neutral court games this year. • The average margin of victory for Augustana in neutral court games this season is nine points with four of the victories coming by a double-digit margin

Fast paced, exciting, entertaining and winning aptly describe Augustana women’s basketball. Dave Krauth is the architect of the program that is among the most successful in NCAA Division II.

Krauth’s 2011-12 Vikings posted a 24-7 record, marking the eighth consecutive year Augustana has chalked up 20 or more wins in a season.spurred by an 8-3 conference record on the road, the Vikings finished second (18-4).

Three of the Vikings’ season losses were to NSIC regular-season champion Wayne State College. The Wildcats also won the conference tournament and qualified for the Elite Eight. Two of the Vikings’ setbacks to Wayne came by a total of six points, and Augustana defeated the Wildcats in the team’s first meeting during the regular season.

Senior point guard Molly Hayes and junior forward Alex Feeney was chosen to the All-NSIC first team. Hayes was a Central Region all-tournament team pick, while Feeney earned honorable mention recognition on both the Division II Bulletin and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association 2012 All-America teams. Feeney is the fifth player to receive All-America recognition during Krauth’s tenure.

The 2012-13 season is Krauth’s 24th as the Vikings’ head coach. His 492-215 career record is the best of any basketball coach in the College’s history. Fifteen times his teams have posted 20-win seasons. Since the 2004-05 campaign, the Vikings have a .734 winning percentage (204-74).

Selection to the NCAA Tournament has been the norm for Krauth and the Vikings. During the 1990s the Vikings earned tournament berths seven times. His ‘90s teams also had five 20-win seasons and never finished below fifth in the nationally renowned North Central Conference.

Krauth’s personal honors include North Central Conference Coach of the Year in 1990, the South Dakota Sportswriters’ College Women’s Coach of the Year in 1994, and the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association Women’s College Coach of the Year in 1989-90, 1990-91, and 2004-05. In 2006, he was named the Russell Athletic/WBCA Division II, Region Seven Coach of the Year after leading the Vikings to a 25-7 record. Included was a school-record 20-game winning streak. In 2012, Krauth was inducted into the Sioux Falls O'Gorman athletic hall of fame.

Teaching and coaching stints at Tri-Valley High School (Colton, S.D.), and Roosevelt High School (Des Moines, Iowa) preceded Krauth’s Augustana appointment. He compiled a career record of 347-143 as a high school coach, taking eight teams to state tournaments. Krauth received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Sioux Falls in 1974. He earned a master’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from South Dakota State University in 1983. Krauth and his wife, Sandy, are the parents of two daughters, Julie and Katie. They have four grandchildren.

The Augustana women have not been bashful about stating that they should have won the NSIC regular season title this year. They finished third, but now they have their chance at redemption, as the Vikings used an impressive defensive performance to knock off top-seeded Concordia-St. Paul, the NSIC regular-season champ, 55-43 in the NSIC tournament semifinals in Rochester, Minn. The Vikings advance to today’s championship, where they’ll face the one other team that finished ahead of them in the standings, Minnesota State. A win would secure the Vikings (23-6) their first-ever conference title. “I just don’t think we played our best basketball the first two times we played (Concordia),” said Viking guard Emily Schulte, who continued a recent scoring-surge by netting 19 points. “We knew that coming in, so we really wanted to show that we could give them competition. We came out with a valiant team effort and that got it done for us.” Defense was the catalyst, as the Vikings held Concordia (23-6) to just four second-half field goals and 15 points, which helped Augie overcome a rather drab offensive performance of their own. The Vikings made just two 3-pointers in the game, and shot 39 percent from the floor. Augie led 29-28 at half, but a 10-0 run early in the second made it 41-30, and Schulte caught fire from there, stretching the run to 22-4 and the lead to 18. “It was a grinder but we defended real well,” said Augie coach Dave Krauth. “I thought Lydia (Nelson) had two or three steals early in the second half that really helped set the tone.” Nelson had 14 points, five rebounds and four steals for Augie, while Andrea Whitney continued her strong bench play with nine points and five boards. That helped the Vikings survive a quiet night from All-NSIC senior Alex Feeney, who made just one basket for a career-low two points. The win probably ensures that Augie will have a spot in the Division II NCAA tournament regardless of Saturday’s result, but right now the Viking players aren’t thinking about the regionals and they aren’t thinking about revenge on the Mavericks. “We’d be the first Augie team to win a conference championship,” Schulte said. “That’d be pretty sweet. NCAA Tournament: Matchups will be decided tonight at 9 p.m. ROCHESTER, MINN. — For the first time in school history, the Augustana women’s basketball team will be hanging a conference championship banner from the Elmen Center rafters, courtesy of a 81-73 win over Minnesota State in Saturday’s NSIC tournament championship game. Emily Schulte had 19 points and five steals to cap off a brilliant tournament effort that earned her MVP honors, but the focus of much of the post-game celebration was on longtime Vikings coach Dave Krauth, who, despite almost 500 career wins, nine consecutive 20-win seasons, and now 13 NCAA tournament appearances, had never guided the Vikings to a league title. With wife Sandy, daughters (and former Viking standouts) Julie and Katie and a handful of grandchildren in attendance, Krauth finally got the chance to hoist the trophy on Saturday, and the usually stoic coach made no effort to hide a wide grin as he triumphantly cut down the final strand of the net as teary-eyed players looked on. “With all the great teams he’s had and all he’s accomplished over the years, to finally be able to give him a championship, that was really our fuel,” said senior Alex Feeney, who had 10 points and nine rebounds. “We wanted to do it for him, and honestly I think we woke up this morning feeling like we were going to do it.” And no one can say the Vikings didn’t earn it. The third-seed entering the tourney, Augie had to go on the road to face North Division and No. 2 Mary in the second round, then had to take down top-seed Concordia-St. Paul, the NSIC regular-season champions, in the semis. That left MSU, the NSIC’s second-place team. Both Concordia and Mankato swept the Vikings in the season series, which was ultmiately what cost them the regular-season title. This was Augie’s chance at redemption, and they didn’t miss it. “I’m so happy that we did this by getting revenge on them,” said senior Lydia Nelson, who had 13 points on Saturday and was named to the all-tournament team, along with Schulte and reserve post Andrea Whitney, who had 14 points, eight rebounds and six blocks against MSU. “We were so focused. We got a chance to prove to ourselves and to the league what kind of team we are, and we were able to win for coach. I couldn’t possibly be happier.” The Vikings (24-6) came out strong, but the Mavs were ready, and it was a back-and-forth game for virtually the duration. Augie led 28-20 midway through the first, but MSU rallied, and appeared poised to take the lead into the half. But Schulte miraculously drained a 55-footer at the buzzer, putting the Vikings back on top, 43-41. “That was a huge momentum play,” Feeney said. “Huge. Instead of going to the half with our heads hanging feeling like we’d wasted a lead, we were in there celebrating.” MSU clawed in front 54-48 early in the second half, but the Vikings used an 18-5 run that was heavy on Schulte and Whitney – at both ends – to go up by six. Again, MSU answered, going up 67-66, but a 3-pointer by a previously slumping Shaunteva Ashley at the end of the shot clock put the Vikings back up 69-67 with just under six minutes to go. The Vikings only tightened their grip from there. The statistics were even, except for at the line, where Augie outscored Mankato, 24-13. The win clinches an NCAA tournament berth for Augie, and they’ll be a dangerous team. But the flood of emotions that poured out of the Vikings after Saturday’s win made it clear that the regional wouldn’t have been much of a consolation prize. This was all about winning a championship for their coach. “I appreciate it,” Krauth said of his players’ desire to win for him. “But I feel really good for this team. We have a nice senior class that has done a lot for this program, so I really feel good for all of us. It was hard-fought, but I really had a sense that we were going to circle the wagons and get it done.
