NSIC INFO From its modest origin as a six-team alliance nearly eight decades ago, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has matured into a 14-team union of upper Midwest colleges and universities to form arguably the strongest affiliation in NCAA Division II. The NSIC can trace its r oots to 1932 w hen six sc hools, including Bemidji Sta te University, Minnesota State Uni versity, Mankato, Minnesota State Uni versity Moorhead, St. Cloud State University, University of Minnesota Duluth and Winona State University signed on as charter members. All remain active subscribers of the league today. Southwest Minnesota State University was added in 1969, followed by Northern State University in 1978, Wayne State College (NE) in 1998, Concordia UniversitySt. Paul and the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1999, the University of Mary and Upper Iowa University in 2006, and Augustana College, in 2008. Minnesota State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth later left the league to join the North Central Conference b ut returned to the NSIC in 2008. University of Minnesota, Morris and Michigan Tech University were once part of the NSIC family as well. In 1992, the NSIC became a true athletic showcase for both men and women with the merger of the traditional Northern Intercollegiate Conference and the Northern Sun Conference, the home of women’s athletics since 1979. Before NSIC affiliates became cer tified f or c hampionship competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1995, its member institutions filled prominent roles in the Na tional Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). NIC and NSC c lubs ann ually dispatc hed qualified student-a thletes to na tional tournaments and captured several NAIA teams and individual championships. The NSIC celebrates its 79th season this year and clearly continues to make a major imprint nationally, winning seven national titles in the last five years. Winona State men claimed NCAA II Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2008 and nar rowly missed a third crown, falling in a last second shot in 2007.In addition, the Warriors established a NCAA II record of 57 consecutive victories. Concordia University launched an ong oing streak of three consecutive NCAA II Volleyball Championships in 2007. In 2008 the Golden Bear s won 37 straight matches after a season opening loss on their way to a second consecutive title and scripted a mar velous encore in 2009 with a perf ect 37-0 finish, a third straight national crown and a current winning streak of 74 straight matches. In a most sur prising run, Minnesota Duluth completed a perf ect 15-0 season b y winning the 2008 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The Bulldogs, limited to only 24 scholarships by league rule, swept a field of fully-funded teams, including top ranked Grand Valley State and number three Northwest Missouri State. Minnesota State added more luster to the league by finishing 32-2 and claiming the 2008-09 NCAA II Women’s Basketball Championship. The Mavericks rolled to a wild 103-94 victory over Franklin Pierce to set a NCAA r ecord for total points in the title game. Since 2000, the NSIC has also par ticipated in Mineral Water Bowl. Hosted by the Quarterback Club of Excelsior Springs, Mo., the Mineral Water Bowl matches the highest-finishing teams fr om the NSIC and the Mid-America Inter collegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) not selected f or the NCAA Di vision II football playoffs. Winona State defeated Missouri Western State, 43-41, in triple overtime, the Warriors, first-ever NCAA II post-season win in 2000. In addition, NSIC student-athletes have made a major splash na tionally as well, collecting a ba tch of individual titles. Concordia setter Mag gie McNamara was honored as the NCAA Division II Hondo Women’s Athlete of the Year, the latest NSIC representative decorated with national Player of the Year honors. The NSIC has long pr ovided competitive intercollegiate athletic programs for its members and several NSIC athletes have distinguished themselves on a larger stage, including the Ol ympics, major league baseball, the National Football League and the National Basketball Association. Member schools continue to emphasize the educational, entertainment and unifying value of sports while pointing with pride to the man y advantages to be g ained by attending these colle ges and uni versities. The NSIC is committed to pr oviding rewarding experiences for its student-athletes, and while the challenges that loom are sizable, indeed, the NSIC is surely well positioned for the future.

AUGUSTANA FACILITIES
ELMEN CENTER HALL SPORTS FORUM
The Elmen Center is the home for the Viking volleyball, basketball and wrestling teams. The Elmen Center has been the host for several regional volleyball tournaments as well as the 2000 Division II Volleyball Elite 8 Championships. With a seating capacity of approximately 4,000 fans, the Elmen Center provides the Vikings with a definite home court advantage. The Elmen Center houses the recreation, athletic, and physical education departments. Since opening in February 1989, Augustana students, staff, and faculty, as well as the Sioux Falls community and region, have enjoyed attending a wide variety of events in the Elmen Center. Each year the Elmen Center is host to over 100 events consisting of athletic events, music events, youth rallies, lectures, swim meets, youth camps, clinics, and tournaments. The Elmen Center also serves as the core facility for the campus recreational sports and fitness activities. The 81,000-square-foot-facility is available over 110 hours each week for a variety of recreational activities. Augustana students, staff, and faculty may take advantage of a 25-yard swimming pool, two racquetball courts, the Hall Sports Forum, six locker rooms, two dry saunas, classrooms, a state-of-the-art training facility, and a multipurpose/wrestling room that can be used for aerobic dance, martial arts, and wrestling. The Hall Forum features a 27,000 square foot performance area has a state-of-the art 176-yard running track, long jump pit, batting cage, and four multi-use courts. During the summer of 2008, the Hall Forum underwent $50,000 in improvements. The basketball/volleyball playing court was repainted with the new Viking and NSIC logos included. Courtside chairs were also refurbished to include the new Viking logo. The bleachers in the Hall Forum were also updated in the summer of 2010. New seat coverings were added, and the baseline bleachers were moved closer to the floor. Located on the first floor of the Elmen Center just beneath the Sanford Gymnasium, the Augustana women’s basketball locker room is complete with a high definition f lat-screen television. While the team room is often times used as a place to relax, it is also the perf ect setting to maintain f ocus f or an upcoming competition. Players ar e able to analyze film, study scouting reports and converse with other players and coaches. Murals painted by Augustana’s Katie VanDuynhoven line the walls of the locker room, and each player is allowed ample space to store her belongings for practice and games. , 40 | AUGUSTANA WOMEN S BASKETBALL
