ABOUT AUGUSTANA

About Augustana College Founded in 1860, Augustana is a selective, residential, comprehensive college of the Lutheran Church. The College is committed to enriching lives and fostering development by combining a foundation in the liberal arts with professional skill and advanced study. With nearly 1,850 students from 26 states and 30 countries, Augustana is ranked the No. 6 baccalaureate college in the nation for its efforts to advance social mobility, research and service by Washington Monthly. We’re proud to be featured among 650 of “America’s Top Colleges” by Forbes and to be named a “Best Midwestern College” by the Princeton Review and a “Best Buy” by U.S. News & World Report. Augustana is also identified as one of "440 Great Colleges for Top Students" by Peterson’s Guide and among “America’s top 100 outstanding but under-appreciated colleges” by Harvard Schmarvard. In 2010, we were named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Role for supporting volunteerism, service-learning and civic engagement and the Templeton Guide includes the College among those that inspire students to lead ethical and civicminded lives. We’re proud to say that the average ACT of our entering class is 25, one of the highest averages of any college or university in the region. Nearly 90 percent of our students come from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. Eleven percent are alumni legacies. Location Augustana is located in Sioux Falls, S.D., the largest city in South Dakota with a population of more than 160,000. The city’s dynamic, robust business environment offers our students internship opportunities in the areas of agribusiness, biotechnology, financial services, health care, manufacturing, and tourism. Sioux Falls is also home to the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Sciences, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, more than 500 restaurants, 70 parks and recreation areas, including a 20mile paved bike trail, and four minor league sports teams. A Global Perspective At Augustana, we believe that in order to learn about the world, you have to see it. Taste it. Live it. It’s why we’re committed to providing students with a global perspective. Nearly half of our students travel abroad during their college careers and, our campus is home to students from 30 countries. The Academic Program At the heart of the Augustana experience is a team of renowned, devoted professors who are passionately committed to engage the intellect and inspire the imagination. More than 80 percent of our full-time tenured and tenure-track professors hold the highest degrees in their fields. Augustana offers more than 50 majors and pre-professional specializations within a 4-1-4 academic year. Choice local internships, study abroad programs and local and national undergraduate research opportunities supplement the curriculum. Civitas, the College’s honors program, provides an exceptionally rigorous academic experience and bridges disciplines with an exploration of the values associated with leading a responsible life.

Performing, Visual and Literary Arts At Augustana, we believe that art stirs the soul, enriches the mind and empowers the heart – it’s why the performing, literary and visual arts are cornerstone to our culture. We’re proud to say that the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra got its start on our campus in 1922. With the addition of the 24,000-square foot Center for Visual Arts, Augustana continues to be a center for the visual arts in southeastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota. Approximately 24 percent of Augustana students are involved in music ensembles, theatre productions and art exhibitions on campus and around the globe. In January 2011, 80 student members of the Augustana Band toured Egypt and in October 2012, the Augustana Orchestra will perform with the legendary rock band Kansas. Well-attended exhibitions featuring professional and student artists are held each year in the new Eide/Dalrymple Gallery. The Theatre Department produces main stage shows each year, including a musical and Vikings Varieties, Augustana’s live homecoming entertainment. In addition, Augustana is proud to partner with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra to bring national and international string players to Sioux Falls through the Augustana Faculty String Quartet. Undergraduate Research Augustana provides unmatched opportunities for our undergraduate students to participate in cutting edge scientific and medical research projects on campus and in laboratories and study tanks throughout the U.S. and overseas. The Outlook for Graduates Some 25 percent of Augustana’s graduating class attends graduate and professional school; their medical school acceptance rate is well above the national average.. In 2010, 94 percent of graduating seniors seeking employment found positions related to their field of study within eight months of graduation. AUGUSTANA ADMINISTRATION >> ROB

OLIVER

PRESIDENT

South Dakota, 1975

When the board of trustees announced its decision to hire Robert C. Oliver as Augustana's 23rd president, the campus and Sioux Falls communities' response was predictably and overwhelmingly positive. Oliver was no stranger to either community, and his leadership and passion for life and learning are hallmarks of his career. Born in Dayton, Ohio, Oliver attended public schools and entered the University of South Dakota in 1971. He obtained a bachelor’s in economics in 1975 and, while employed by Norwest Bank in Rapid City, began coursework to receive his master’s of business administration in 1977.

As Norwest Bank completed its transition to becoming Wells Fargo & Co., Oliver continued his progression through a variety of positions with the firm. He has experience as a personal banker and commercial banker and became manager of the business banking department in Sioux Falls. In 1987, Oliver was named president of the Sioux Falls market banks. He expanded the operations of the then Norwest Bank franchise in Sioux Falls to include 16 locations. In 1999, he was named southeast district president, responsible for 27 banking locations in 13 communities in southeast South Dakota and southwest Minnesota.

Oliver’s "free time" during his years at the bank included coursework at The Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He taught classes for the USD School of Business, both in the undergraduate and MBA programs in Sioux Falls. He also taught for the American Institute of Banking and the Institute for Financial Education.

Believing that service to one's community is as important as one's career, Oliver became well-known throughout the area as a model board member and volunteer. His area involvement has included the Avera McKennan Hospital Board of Trustees (chair), Augustana Board of Regents (former chair), Board of Directors of Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota (member), Communication Services for the Deaf (board member), Sioux Empire United Way Board (former chair) and Volunteers of America (board member). Additionally, Oliver has served Forward Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls Development Foundation, Main Street Sioux Falls, YMCA, Threshold Youth Services, the Civic Fine Arts Center and Sioux Empire Red Cross. He is a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Oliver retired from banking in 2004 and joined the Augustana faculty as an associate professor and chair of the department of business administration. While his tenure within the department was brief, his dedication to students and excellence in the classroom were soon well-known. Oliver and his wife, Angela, are the parents of two daughters, Laura Oliver and Andrea Cammilleri. BILL

GROSS

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Augustana’s athletic department has flourished under the direction of Bill Gross.

Augustana, 1973

From facilities to execution on the playing field, Augustana has gained national recognition under Gross’ guidance. The Vikings began competition in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2008 and in just three seasons claimed the U.S. Bank/NSIC All-Sports Championship. This award recognizes the NSIC program with the most success each year. In 2010-11, the Vikings won seven NSIC championships and the football team shared a division title. Five Augustana teams competed for NCAA championships. In addition, the Vikings checked in at No. 3 in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, a national all-sports ranking of schools in NCAA Division II. Augustana sponsors 18 athletic programs – nine each for men and women. In 2010-11, there were 362 student-athletes listed on the various Viking rosters.

Gross begins his 33rd year as a member of the Augustana athletic staff in 2011-12. He served as assistant men’s basketball coach from 1979 to 1983 and head men’s basketball coach from 1983 to 1992. He chaired the health, physical education and recreation department from 1995 to 2005. After his appointment in 1986, Gross is now in his 26th year as Augustana’s athletic director.

Under Gross’ leadership, Augustana now plays the majority of its home contests on campus. He has been directly involved in fundraising efforts and planning of the Elmen Center (1989) and its addition (2002); Bowden Field for softball (1991); Ronken Field for baseball (1993); Hall Football Complex and Sanford Gymnasium (2006); Kirkeby-Over Stadium (2009); Morstad Field (2009); and the Huether Tennis Centre (2009). He has also supervised and raised funds for the campus marquee (2002), the installation of the Pulastic surface in the Elmen Center (2005), and the Elmen Center bleacher renovations (2010). Since 2006, Gross has been instrumental in cultivating donors to raise more than $15 million in support of new and renovated athletic facilities on campus. In terms of annual fundraising, Gross has played a significant role in the growth of the 800-member Augustana Athletic Club. He has been directly involved in the formation and increased support generated by the All-American Team, Augustana’s corporate sponsorship program. The organization has grown to 43 members, who provide more than $500,000 in annual support for Augustana athletics.

In 2004, Gross created the 30-minute promotional “Augustana Sportscene” television program. The weekly production, which Gross hosts, begins its eighth season in 2011-12 and is now reaching more than 1,000 communities in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois on Midco Sports Network and the Mediacom cable system. The program is also viewed worldwide at GoAugie.com. In 2009, Gross negotiated a new contract with Results Radio/Cumulus Media to carry all Augustana women’s basketball games on KXRB-AM 1000.

In his nine seasons as head men’s basketball coach, Gross’ teams posted a 154-103 record and registered nine winning seasons. His 1988-89 squad won the North Central Conference championship and compiled an overall record of 23-7 (a school record at the time). His Vikings also advanced to the NCAA tournament in 1986, 1988 and 1989. A native of Hayfield, Minn., Gross played basketball at Augustana from 1969 to 1973. He earned All-North Central Conference recognition three years. After receiving his degree, Gross played one year of professional basketball in Europe. He then taught and coached at the high school level in Mitchell, S.D., and Marshall, Minn., before returning to Augustana in 1979. He earned his master’s degree in physical education from the University of South Dakota in 1979. Gross and his wife, Sheree, are the parents of three children: Jennie, Chris and Sara.

<< SEASON PREVIEW

Vikings hope to rebound in 2011-12 by Bruce Conley, sports information assistant

Augustana won 20 games in 2010-11, reaching the magic number for the seventh straight season. Yet, in some ways it was a disappointing run for Coach Dave Krauth’s Vikings.

High preseason expectations were supported by a veteran team loaded with firepower. But before the first tipoff, a knee injury put redshirt freshman forward Rhianna Gullickson (Alexandria, S.D.) on the sidelines for the season. Guard Faith Tinklenberg (Pipestone, Minn.), who started all 31 games in 2009-10 as a sophomore, was lost for the season three games into the schedule.

This year’s team will be built around senior guard Molly Hayes (Harrisburg, S.D.) and junior forward Alex Feeney (Bismarck, N.D.). Both started all 30 games last year and Hayes was selected to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference second team. Feeney was chosen NSIC Freshman of the Year for 2009-10.

Last season Hayes averaged 14.3 points and 3.1 rebounds a game. She shot 52.2 percent from the field, led the team in assists (155) and was second in steals (59). Feeney averaged 13.4 points a game and led the team in rebounds (5.9). She shot 52.3 percent from the floor and had a team-leading 35 blocked shots.

A priority for Krauth and his staff is replacing three starters and the top reserve. Last season guards Megan Doyle and Tessa Wilka, forward Kristi Board, and reserve forward Liz Helsper combined for 35 points a game. Twice in her career Doyle was chosen to the NSIC first team and last year was the Vikings’ leading scorer 11 times.

Junior forward Lydia Nelson (Lake Preston, S.D.) started two games last year and played in all 30. She averaged 7.4 points and 2.9 rebounds a game. Tinklenberg averaged 5.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in her three starts. Sophomore guard Emily Schulte (Sioux Falls), junior guard Cami Koehn (Egan, S.D.) and sophomore forward Katie Meister (Sioux Falls) all have game experience.

Freshman centers Emily Bose and Andrea Whitney, and freshman guard Shaunteva Ashley (Sioux Falls Roosevelt) were redshirted last season.

The 2011 recruiting class includes guards Sophie Kenney (Fargo, N.D.) and Alex Kneeland (Summit, S.D.), and forward Nicole Kerkhoff (Morgan, Minn).

Krauth begins his 23rd season as head coach. His all-time record as Augustana’s winningest coach is 441-202.

DAVE

KRAUTH HEAD COACH | 23rd SEASON 441-202 | SIOUX FALLS, 1979 Augustana women’s basketball teams have performed at a high level throughout Dave Krauth’s tenure at the helm. Krauth, who enters his 23rd season as the Vikings’ head coach in 2011-12, has the most wins of any coach in Augustana history with a career record of 441-202. The veteran head coach has guided his squads to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and tutored 46 all-conference players, including three conference MVPs. Since arriving at Augustana, Krauth has experienced just one losing season. The Vikings posted a 20-10 record in 2010-11 and finished in a tie for fifth place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference at 13-9. Throughout the season, the Vikings were led by senior point guard Megan Doyle, a two-time All-NSIC first-team selection. Doyle completed her collegiate eligibility as the No. 4 scorer in Augustana history (1,505 points) and tied for fourth in assists (444). The Vikings have been consistent, if not dominant, in the past decade, racking up 20-win seasons each of the last seven years. In all, Krauth has logged 20-win campaigns 14 times. In 2009-10, Krauth and the Vikings posted an overall record of 24-7 and were second in the NSIC while qualifying for the NCAA tournament and advancing to the region semifinals. Newcomer Alex Feeney was named the NSIC’s Freshman of the Year and later picked up Division II Bulletin All-Freshman team honors. Krauth’s 2008-09 club was also an NCAA Tournament team, charting a 20-10 record before losing to eventual national champion Minnesota State in the opening round of the region tournament. Selection to the NCAA tournament has been the norm for Krauth and his teams. During the 1990s, the Vikings earned tournament berths seven times. His ‘90s teams also had five 20-win seasons and never finished below fifth in the nationally renowned North Central Conference. Krauth’s resume includes a laundry list of personal accolades. He was named the North Central Conference Coach of the Year in 1990. He was the South Dakota Sportswriters’ Coach of the Year in 1994 and was the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association Women’s College Coach of the Year in 1989-90, 1990-91 and in 2004-05. In 2006, he was named the Russell Athletic/WBCA Division II Region 7 Coach of the Year after leading the Vikings to a 25-7 record, which included a school-record 20-game winning streak. Teaching and coaching stints at Tri-Valley High School in Colton, S.D., and Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa, preceded Krauth’s tenure at Augustana. His prep record is 347-143, and he guided eight of those teams to state tournaments. Krauth is a 1974 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls with a degree in physical education. He received his master’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from South Dakota State University in 1983. Krauth and his wife Sandy have two daughters, Julie (Augustana, 1994) and Katie (Augustana, 2006). Both Julie and Katie were standout players for the Vikings’ women’s basketball and softball teams.

NSIC BIOGRAPHY >> From its modest origin as a six-team alliance nearly eight decades ago, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has matured into a 14-team union of upper Midwest colleges and universities to form arguably the strongest affiliation in NCAA Division II. The NSIC can trace its roots to 1932 when six schools, including Bemidji State, Minnesota State, MSU Moorhead, St. Cloud State , Minnesota Duluth and Winona State signed on as charter members. All remain active subscribers of the league today. Southwest Minnesota State was added in 1969, followed by Northern State in 1978, Wayne State in 1998, Concordia and Minnesota, Crookston in 1999, the U-Mary and Upper Iowa in 2006, and Augustana in 2008.

MSU, SCSU and UMD later left the league to join the North Central Conference but returned to the NSIC in 2008. Minnesota-Morris and Michigan Tech were once part of the NSIC family as well. In July 2012, the NSIC will again expand with the addition of Minot State and the Sioux Falls, bringing the league to 16 members for the 2012-13 academic season.

In 1992, the NSIC became a true athletic showcase for both men and women with the merger of the traditional Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) and the Northern Sun Conference (NSC), the home of women’s athletics since 1979. Before NSIC affiliates became certified for championship competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1995, its member institutions filled prominent roles in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). NIC and NSC clubs annually dispatched qualified student-athletes to national tournaments and captured several NAIA teams and individual championships. The NSIC celebrates its 80th season this year and clearly continues to make a major imprint nationally, winning nine national titles in the last six years. The WSU men claimed NCAA II Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2008 and narrowly missed a third crown, falling in a last second shot in 2007. In addition, the Warriors established a NCAA II record of 57 consecutive victories.

CU launched an ongoing streak of four consecutive NCAA II Volleyball Championships in 2007. In 2008, the Golden Bears won 37 straight matches after a season opening loss on their way to a second consecutive title and scripted a marvelous encore in 2009 with a perfect 37-0 finish, a third straight national crown and a winning streak of 74 straight matches. In 2010, the Golden Bear extendeds that win streak to 75 before dropping their second match of the season. They started 2010 with a 10-4 record before ripping off 22 straight wins on their way to their fourth straight national title. In a most surprising run, UMD completed a perfect 15-0 season by winning the 2008 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The Bulldogs, limited to only 24 scholarships by league rule, swept a field of fully-funded teams, including top ranked Grand Valley State and No. 3 Northwest Missouri State. Two years later in 2010, the Bulldogs repeated that feat, going 15-0 again to win the national championship. The Bulldogs became the first NCAA DII football squad to win two national championships with undefeated records. MSU added more luster to the league by finishing 32-2 and claiming the 2008-09 NCAA II Women’s Basketball Championship. The Mavericks rolled to a wild 103-94 victory over Franklin Pierce to set a NCAA record for total points in the title game.

Since 2000, the NSIC has also participated in the Mineral Water Bowl. Hosted by the Quarterback Club of Excelsior Springs, Mo., the Mineral Water Bowl matches the highest-finishing teams from the NSIC and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) not selected for the NCAA Division II football playoffs. WSU defeated Missouri Western State 43-41 in triple overtime, the Warriors first-ever postseason win since 2000. In addition, NSIC student-athletes have made a major splash nationally as well, collecting a batch of individual titles. CU setter Maggie McNamara was honored as the NCAA Division II Honda Women’s Athlete of the Year, the latest NSIC representative decorated with national Player of the Year honors.

The NSIC has also had three athletes awarded the NCAA Elite 88 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships. Earning the award were Kendra Huettl (MSU, Softball, 2011), Matt Braithwaite (Augustana, Cross Country, 2010) and Lauren Brown (WSU, Outdoor Track and Field, 2010). Member schools continue to emphasize the educational, entertainment and unifying value of sports while pointing with pride to the many advantages to be gained by attending these colleges and universities. The NSIC is committed to providing rewarding experiences for its student-athletes, and while the challenges that loom are sizable, indeed, the NSIC is surely well positioned for the future.

ELMEN CENTER

Located at the intersection of 33rd Street and Grange Avenue, the Elmen Center opened in February 1989. It is the hub for Augustana’s athletic programs but is also the site of numerous school and community cultural gatherings. Each year the facility is host to more than 100 events. Included are Augustana men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling competitions. Music programs, youth rallies, lectures, swim meets, youth camps, clinics and high school basketball tournaments also appear on the calendar.

The Elmen Center serves as the core facility for the campus recreational sports and fitness activities. The 81,000-square-foot facility is available more than 110 hours each week for a variety of recreational activities. Augustana students, staff and faculty may take advantage of a 25-yard swimming pool, two racquetball courts, the Hall Sports Forum, six locker rooms, classrooms, a high-tech training facility and a multi-purpose/wrestling room that also serves as a venue for aerobic dance and martial arts.

The 4,000-seat Hall Sports Forum features a 27,000-square-foot performance area and a state-of-the art 176-yard running track, long jump pit, batting cage and four multi-use courts. The new Robbins Pulastic SP sports floor, installed in 2004, was the first of its type in the area.

Since the summer of 2008, the Hall Sports Forum has undergone more than $315,000 in upgrades. During the summer of 2008 the basketball/volleyball playing court was repainted with the new Viking and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference logos. Courtside chairs were also refurbished to include the new Viking logo. New bleachers were installed in 2010, and the lighting was upgraded in 2011. In 2000, the Elmen Center hosted the NCAA Division II Volleyball Elite 8 national tournament. Since 1995, the Boe Forum on Public Affairs has been held in the Elmen’s Hall Sports Forum, featuring world leaders including Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev, President George H.W. Bush, Vice President Al Gore, Queen Nore of Jordan, Mexico President Vicente Fox and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

Impetus for construction of the Elmen Center was provided by the generosity of Bob and Rita Elmen, Jim and Eloise Elmen and Bill and Irene Hall. Bob Elmen graduated from Augustana in 1952 and Jim in 1960.

The Elmens and Halls all are recipients of the Tuve Award. Named for Anthony G. Tuve, Augustana’s president from 1890 to 1916, the award recognizes visionary, forward-thinking, generous individuals who have reached the level of $100,000 in charitable gift support to the College.
