GENETIC UMPH by Darrell Wilkes, Ph.D., International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) executive vice president My dad was a cowman. He started breeding cattle when he was 16 and did it until he passed on to greener pastures 70-years later. He did not have a formal education in genetics or reproductive physiology, but he understood cattle deep down in his DNA. His hands were as big as a baseball glove, but he could palpate a cow, find an ovary, and declare that she had a “good bump”. I was a little kid trying to figure out what he was saying so he would explain - “she has a well-developed corpus luteum which produces progesterone and suppresses prostaglandin which allows her to maintain her pregnancy”. My response was just “oh”, as if an 8 year old kid could understand what he just said. He had another technical term that he used sparingly. It was a term reserved for cattle that he truly admired. It usually applied to bulls but he would sometimes use it to describe a cow. The term was “umph”. I’m not even sure I know how to spell it, but I know what it meant. When an animal had “umph” it meant that they were soggy and deep, had stout base width, stood on solid bone with good feet, had natural thickness with balance and just had the look of a very healthy, productive and easy-keeping animal. If only one of these ingredients were lacking, he would not use the term. If an animal had umph, it had it everywhere, not just some places. If a bull didn’t have umph, he wouldn’t have used him to breed cows even if someone offered the bull or the semen for free. No umph, no deal! I used the term once while giving reasons to a 4-H leader at a judging contest and, after chuckling, he asked me to explain what that meant. When I explained it, he advised me to use the long version and not to abbreviate by using the word “umph” again while giving reasons. I still use the term because it means something to me. In this issue of the Journal, we provide lists of the most impactful sires and dams in terms of the number of progeny registrations booked in the last 12 months. While 14
D E C E M B E R 2023 B R A N G U S J O U R N A L
I hesitated to conflate the meaning of a term that I grew up with, I would say that these animals have genetic umph. I’m not referring so much to their physical appearance – although I know virtually all of them qualify as having umph – but I am referring to the impact that they have on the breed. The top 25 Brangus and Ultrablack sires produced 3,875 calves that were registered in the last 12 months. The daughters of another list of 25 sires produced 4,294 calves that were registered in the last 12 months. A handful of sires show up on both lists. Finally, a handful of black donor cows numbering 25 produced 799 calves registered in the last 12 months. Taken together, this is a relatively short list of animals that are having a monstrous impact on the current generation of Brangus cattle. This is genetic umph in numbers. Every breed of cattle has individual animals that have a larger-than-life impact on the breed. Ask any Hereford breeder to name the bulls that “made” the breed, and they’ll tell you. Ask any Angus breeder to quickly name the 10 most important sires in the last 40 years and they’ll start listing them (in their opinion). Not everyone will have the same list, but there will be significant crossover from one list to the next. The same is true with Brangus. It is somewhat amazing that a group of breeders can sit together and discuss animals from 20-years ago by simply using their PHN and everyone knows the animals being discussed. Truly great animals are never forgotten. I’ve heard humble breeders say that they just got “lucky” when they produced ol’ 999X9 who became a legend in the breed. While I can appreciate the humility I also know that luck has little to do with it. Luck works in poker, fishing and golf, but rarely works in cattle genetics. Great bulls come from great cows bred to great bulls, and the cow is usually sired by another great bull. That’s just the way genetics works. I suppose you could say that you increase your chances of getting lucky by breeding the best to the best, doing it over and over again, and then being honest with yourself about
| EXECUTIVE CORNER | which matings truly worked. A tip of the hat is in order for those breeders who produced animals that many other breeders chose to use in their herds. That’s about the highest compliment that one breeder can give to another. Congratulations to those who bred these cattle. You deserve to be recognized. You earned it. Another interesting statistic that you’ll see in this issue of the Journal is the profile of prefixes of the animals registered in the last 12 months. Almost a quarter of all registrations were Ultrablacks. I am still somewhat perplexed when visiting with breeders who question the Ultrablack program. From where I sit, it is clear to me that there is very good demand for Ultras. Otherwise, smart people would not tie up their resources to produce them. In simple business terms, if IBBA refused to register them some other breed association would, and IBBA would be smaller and weaker because of it. Instead, we’re larger and stronger. Moreover, we can claim a more diverse geography which allows even more growth. Part of the pure beauty of Brangus is that we can field highly productive cows from south Florida to Ohio and Nevada. Ultrablacks help with that.
There is also a list of the largest breeders based on THR receipts. This is presented because people find it interesting. But, there is no implication that breeders who don’t make the top 25 list are somehow less important. They aren’t. When a member calls the office needing assistance, staff does not check to see how many cows they have before making the effort to assist them. Every single IBBA member is important. And we’ve all read enough stories about breeders who are now of significant size who started with a couple heifers. Those examples make great stories because they’re true. The Brangus breed is in an uptrend thanks to your hard work and diligence. The genetic trends are all moving in the right direction and we will soon have EPDs enhanced with actual feedlot and carcass data. We are proving that the maternal umph that we all picture with a Brangus cow is accompanied by significant terminal umph when we send Brangus and Ultras through the feeding a packing sectors. I’ll close by wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
GO BRANGUS

Brangus Enthusiasts, The International Brangus Breeders Foundation would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our generous donors. These breeders and individuals are supporting a foundation that helps move the Brangus breed forward in the beef industry. Some donors have signed up for the Bullish on Brangus program, in which they make a $10 donation for every bull sold. Others participate in the Brangus Value Project. Some donated embryos that were sold during the Genetic Edge sale in Houston, and other donors choose to simply make a general contribution to the IBBF for use in other research and education programs that are approved by the IBBF. The International Brangus Breeders Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation. Consult with your tax advisor on the deductibility of your donations. | UPDATE FROM THE FIELD |
UPDATE
from the Field
by Kyle Caldwell, Director of Field Services and Strategic Projects After attending 11 sales in person this fall and watching many more online, I think it is safe to say the demand for Brangus is as high as it has ever been. The proof is in the pudding; just look at the sale reports in the pages of this magazine. Time and again, registered and commercial buyers showed up in force to throw their support behind the efforts of progressive Brangus breeders from Texas to Florida and everywhere in between. As for my personal travels, in the last month I’ve been to five different states (some multiple times) attending sales and going on ranch tours in the area. At the time of my last update, I was returning home from a few days of vacation taking our local 4-H Meat Judging Team up to the National Contest in Kansas City. After an evening at home with family, I hopped back in the pickup and drove over to Poteet, TX for the MP Brangus Annual Fall Production Sale and was met by strong support from local and online buyers. Mark and his family never do anything small, and the annual fall sale is a testament to that. From there, I drove back home and packed again for a trip to Florida and Georgia for the Phillips-Fenco bull sale and the Herndon Farms 5th Annual Fall Sale. With the sale at Phillips Ranch being on a Tuesday and Herndon Farms on Saturday, I filled the time in between with a few visits. After the well-attended sale at Phillips Ranch, I headed north to the Columbia Livestock Market in Lake City, Florida and met up with owner John Willis. John has been an integral part of improving the cattle business in north Florida. John noticed years ago that the type and quality of calves in his area needed to improve to capture a greater piece of the pie from order buyers. According to John, at the time, a large portion of the calves he was marketing were coming in as intact bull calves, without vaccinations, and not having gone through any weaning protocol. Combined with poor investments in bull power, this produced a combination that culminated in some of those calves bringing $0.80 per pound less than other calves that were 100 pounds lighter but had been better managed. Realizing that producer education and high-quality Brangus genetics were the answer, he began putting together a bull sale at his sale barn pulling 32

in seedstock producers from all over the southeast to bring Brangus bulls to sell to his local clientele. Since then, John said that his typical sale barn client’s calves bring higher prices running through his sale ring, which makes for some happy customers. After my visit in Lake City, I made my way up to Char-No Farm in Williamson, GA and met with Chuck and Norma Sword. Chuck and Norma are long-time IBBA members and regular consignors to the Columbia Livestock bull sale. I enjoyed visiting with Chuck about the history of the Char-No operation and even had a chance to interact with one of his regular customers coming by to pick up his newest bull. I left Char-No as the sun was going down and drove up to Lake Majestik Farms in Flat Rock, Alabama where Nic Cornelison was kind enough to put me up for the night. I met manager Shane Cooper at daylight for a quick sausage-biscuit and then we were off checking out the newest additions to their registered female herd and the yearling sale bulls getting ready for the GenePlus sale in November 2024. Lake Majestik is a beautiful place with striking Brangus cattle roaming the hills of northeast Alabama set against a backdrop of trees changing into their crimson, gold, and orange fall colors. Before we knew it it was past lunchtime and I needed to get on the road. Although, I could’ve spent three days there and I probably still wouldn’t have been able to see all of it. The next stop on the journey was Hunt’s H+ Brangus in Calhoun, GA where Wesley and Jamey were kind enough to take me through some of their bulls being developed for their annual sale on the last weekend in February. While this was not my first time meeting Wesley or Jamey, I always admire the level of care they take to listen to the needs of their customer, creating cattle that work in their respective environments and only using trusted and proven genetics to do it. I said it once in my April update about the Hunts and I’ll say it again now, the adage “They come for the cattle and stay for the customer service” is well displayed with these folks. My final visit in Georgia before the Herndon Farms sale was Vanna Farms, helmed by Lee McGarity. While my visit at Vanna was short, it was quickly apparent how much care Lee takes in making mating decisions to continually improve his herd. The tree topper on the Florida/Alabama/Georgia
excursion was the L.G. Herndon Jr. Farms 5th Annual Fall Production Sale. This was another well attended sale with several elite Brangus female and bull offerings and of course, fresh Vidalia onion rings. After a few office days at home, it was time to head north for the GenePlus sale at Chimney Rock. I was fortunate enough this time to be able to bring my wife Jenn and son Kase up for them to experience the Cow Palace for the first time. While the winding mountain roads may not have agreed with Kase’s stomach, the cattle offering was spectacular and uniform from the front pen to the back. The next stop was just up the road for the Branch Ranch Rough and Ready sale. I will always remember that sale as attending it was my very first day on the job with IBBA. From there I jumped on a flight to Birmingham, Alabama for the Quail Valley sale but made a few detours to visit CDP Partners TTT Ranch and Johnston Brangus. Despite a tough drought hitting the area, the Brangus cattle at both operations were holding up very well, a testament to their adaptability. I finished up the week at the Quail Valley sale in Oneonta, Alabama. The following week I made my way up to El Dorado, AR for the CDP Brangus Fall Sale held for the first time at
the Draggin’ M Ranch. I was thankful to get a night at home in Natchitoches before heading out to the annual fall sale at Cavender’s Neches River Ranch. Up next, you can catch me rounding out the fall sale season at the T3 Pine Belt Alliance Sale the Saturday after Thanksgiving and at the Texas Drovers Sale in Weimar, Texas. With as many people as I am about to thank, this paragraph may have been more suited to the November issue but given that fall sale season is nearing a close and this is the last Brangus Journal for 2023, it feels warranted. To all the buyers who have staked the future of their operations on Brangus cattle, THANK YOU. To all the breeders who have listened to their customers and utilized cutting edge genetics to push the breed into the future, THANK YOU. To my wife Jennifer who holds down the fort at home while simultaneously working full time and taking care of a rambunctious two-year old when I’m gone to sales and ranch visits, most of all, THANK YOU.
GO BRANGUS!

| CATTLEFAX TRENDS |
WAYS HIGHER INTEREST RATES COST COW-CALF PRODUCERS CATTLEFAX TRENDS Higher interest rates affect every sector of the cattle business. However, as the only “fixed cost” member of the beef supply chain cow-calf producers are affected in ways they may not have previously considered. Probably the most obvious impact of higher interest rates is the added cost to the cow-calf budget on any borrowed capital. However, interest expenses incurred by the stocker/grower and feeding sector of the industry also directly affects cow-calf producers. The interest expenses of growers and feeders alike “trickle back” and take another hit on the cow-calf producer. Increased interest expense on both feeding and cattle costs reduce cowcalf breakeven purchase prices, or simply how much a feeder/ backgrounder or stocker operator can spend on a calf. It is true that cow-calf producers have benefited from lower corn prices and a higher fed cattle market this year. Calf prices on video sales and in local sale barns all have come in well above year-ago levels. The average price of a 575-pound steer calf this October was $2.79 per pound, up from $1.85 per pound last year (based on a South Plains calf on the CattleFax feeder grid). That will make the trip back from delivering calves to the sale barn a whole lot more enjoyable. Recent conversations have resulted in several elated individuals who just sold calves this fall who were not anticipating prices to be quite as good as they were. But it is possible that calf prices could have been even better if interest rates had held at previous year 34
D E C E M B E R 2023 B R A N G U S J O U R N A L
levels. Assuming that cattle feeders are putting up 25 percent equity and incurring 8.5 percent interest rates, the interest expense on the cost of a 575-pound steer calf is pushing $70 per head. Interest on half of the feed adds on another $25 per head for a total cost of $95 per head. That adds about 18 cents per pound to the breakeven purchase price on a steer calf. At last year’s interest rates, that was about $30 per head or 6 cents per pound.
So, as a cow-calf producer, you end up picking up the cost for your own interest expenses, plus a share of the interest cost of the next phase of the supply chain. How much of that share you get hit with depends on how deep that $95 per head cuts into feeding margins. Implied margins for the first week of November 2023 indicated that cattle feeders could still buy a yearling steer and lock in $30 to $60 per head profit, with
| CATTLEFAX TRENDS | yearling heifer opportunities even larger averaging over $75 per head (including interest expenses). However, the recent changes in the futures markets have taken away most of that margin on 575–600-pound calf. The result will be more pressure on calf prices now that potential margins appear to be much smaller.
Even with the pullback in the fed market, one class of cattle that does still show some feeding margin is heifers. The heifer mates to the steer calves that brought $2.79 in October brought $2.48, or about $138 per head less. There is historical justification for the steer-heifer price spread. CattleFax FirstLook data shows that on average a 550–600-pound heifer placed in October will have a dry matter feed conversion rate of 6.81 pounds of dry feed per pound gained - about ½ a pound higher than steers, which works out to an extra 7 cents added to the estimated cost of gain based on current ration prices. Also, you can put on about 100 pounds more total weight on the steer. Still, taking all of this into consideration, there is almost $100 per head more potential margin on the heifer calf with the current steer-heifer price spreads. So, if you are considering retaining ownership on part of your calf crop, this year’s nod goes to feeding your heifers and selling your steers. Less obvious ways that higher interest rates affect the cow-calf producer is increased feed costs this coming winter as well as higher corn prices at the
feedyard. While corn prices are down significantly from last year, the cost of corn is also inflated because of higher interest rates. According to a University of Kentucky analysis, an increase in the interest rate from 4 percent to 10 percent will increase the storage costs of corn stored for 5 months by 162.5 percent or 13 cents per bushel. That will also apply to any corn-based energy source from cake to tubs used to supplement cows through the winter. And the list of how higher interest rates affect cow calf producers gets even longer! Higher interest rates also directly affect heifer retention plans and the value of replacement females. At 10 percent interest on 80 percent of the cost of a $2,500 replacement heifer, that works out to about $200 per year compared to $100 per head interest cost on last year’s cow budget. Regardless of the economist or banker, they mostly agree that high interest rates are going to be here for the next year or more and will not likely get back to the historical lows seen just a couple of years ago. As the fixed-cost segment of the beef business, cow-calf producers not only benefit from higher prices up the chain, but also eventually bear the brunt of higher expenses such as those discussed here as well.

Pineapples. Pineapples, and oranges. These everabundant products are just some of the local produce used on beef operations for supplementation through pineapple pulp, orange pulp, and sileage from the crowns of the pineapple. Not only does Costa Rica strive to use available feed stuff to supplement their cattle, but they also use it as a means to decrease human food waste in order to have an environmentally friendly approach to raising beef. Costa Rica is one of the largest international markets that focuses on environmental stewardship, renewable energy, and adaptability. This past October, the International Brangus Breeders Association’s (IBBA) International Committee, with the support of the United States Livestock Genetics Exports team (USLGE), planned an outbound mission trip to Costa Rica. Committee members Dan and Sandra Marvel of Marvel Farms as well as Mario Cardona with Santa Rosa Ranch traveled with me to Costa Rica to network with fellow Brangus breeders, show support for our Costa Rica Brangus

Association, and get firsthand accounts of the cattle needs and requirements for the country to efficiently produce beef. We were excited to share our knowledge with one other during this trip and are eager to share this trip with you. Our first day we were introduced to board of directors of the Asociación Cámara de Ganaderos de Liberia (CGL) and Federación de Cámara de Ganaderos de Guanacaste (FCGG). We had the privilege to meet with Isaiah Rivas, Eduardo Chito Arata, and Arturo Aguilar Lizano. These gentlemen hosted us for an information heavy dialogue afternoon and evening where we discussed the unique environment of the Guanacaste province, the transition they are striving to make in the beef industry, and the obstacles they face in today’s market. Little did we know that this meet-and-greet social would turn into a video interview with the local Revista Guana Actual as a promotional news piece for the area. It was a surprise when you started talking with those that you come across during your travels how far and
| INTERNATIONAL CONNECTION | wide Brangus is across the country. One of the owners of the hotel we stayed at has a Brangus operation as well and was excited to meet Brangus breeders from the U.S. visiting Costa Rica. “The Brangus breeders we met are proud of the cattle they are raising and with good reason. The cattle we saw are functional, productive, and very high quality. Yet, they are looking for ways to improve their meat production,” the Marvels stated.
The following day was spent with CGL & FCGG as they took us to four different cattle operations -- each with its own unique climate, production goals, and objectives for their ranch’s future growth. We visited Finca La Palma and Finca La Olla which are run by Fabio and José Fabio, a father and son, who are past and current Presidents of FCGG. They use smaller traps with large groups that are moved and rotated every 3 days. This allows the pastures to rest for 30 days and mitigates the possibility for tick infestations. Their ranch also uses fixed time artificial insemination (AI) followed by natural service clean up bulls 15 days later. Sileage is an important part of their nutrition management program, and they select cattle that are very docile, breed back every year, and are environmentally adapted to their climate with short hair. Additionally, this group took us to two other breeders who have varying degrees of interest in Brangus that have started recently. Hacienda El Cenizaro is a predominantly Brahman and Nellore herd whose owner, Luis Armando Calleja Morice, emphasized the importance of white cattle in his area and the traditional values placed on these breeds over others in his region. He also showed us his sire imported from the U.S. and the progeny those U.S. genetics have yielded. Then, we visited Hacienda Los Angeles with owner Adolfo Jimenez, who is the President of both the Brown Swiss and
Braunvieh associations in Costa Rica. He is looking into converting his dairy operation into a beef on dairy program to increase the quality of his beef products. The next day we went to SV Brangus where owner Juan Carlos Soto hosted us. Juan is a big proponent of using the Igenity Brangus DNA product as a tool in their toolbox for making selection decisions. They have found the numbers and averages related to their specific herd and can now use this to have minimum standards for their replacements. However, the DNA results are just one tool. They have created large databanks of information on their ranch and strongly believe in the numbers and data assisting in their selection processing. A big part of those selection decisions is adaptability. They have even created a hair scorecard system for their ranch in order to cull those from the herd who are not adaptable at maturity. Juan then took us to Hacienda Montezuma where we met with their ranch manager, Allan Perez Chaverri, and owner, Max Alberto Acosta Carazo. Their operation has a small, registered herd of about 60 head. However, they use those registered stock for embryo transfer (ET) donor dams as well as to supply replacement animals to their commercial herd which has about 600 cows. Montezuma and many of the other ranches include Eco-Tourism as part of their operation. Additionally, they are stewards for the wildlife and natural environment, striving to protect the integrity of the land and lessen their environmental impact and their ranch’s carbon footprint.
Next on our schedule was Rio Cuarto Brangus, owned by former Costa Rica Brangus President, Javier Camacho. Javier’s ranch is one where genetic improvement has been implemented for multiple generations and you can see that when you look at his herd. The Marvels were able to witness the impact their genetics have by viewing progeny D E C E M B E R 2023 B R A N G U S J O U R N A L

out of their AI sire at Javier’s ranch. He has researched and tested at his ranch which genetics work best and produce environmentally adapted, superior animals and which ones just don’t fit right. It was great to be able to have open dialogue conversations about what works best and what doesn’t. The Marvels stated, “They expressed the need for genetics that are adapted to their climate and environment. They specifically discussed their commitment for short hair, heat tolerance, good feed conversion, and high-quality carcass yields.” Hearing the positive and negative comments are things that will help us all to work towards building Brangus to the best breed it can be. Additionally, Javier hosted multiple Costa Rica Brangus breeders at his ranch for a luncheon that day to join us in conversation. We were able to meet with Keneth Villalobos Salas – La Corona Brangus and Andres Salazar Solis – Cabanas Brangus Zarcero. Andres grilled fresh cuts from Carnes JAK Premium Brangus Beef, a co-op of which he and Javier are part owners. It was a great experience to be able to see the farm-to-table experience as well as the genetics that went into producing the food we got to enjoy. Costa Rica is becoming a prominent supporter and producer of quality beef, and this is something our fellow Brangus breeders are proud to be a part of. “The high demand for quality beef in Costa Rica, but also their challenge of access to outside genetics as well as high-quality semen and embryos in certain areas of the country, especially for smaller producers, creates an opportunity for U.S. producers to extend their 40

expertise in reproductive technologies and the possibility to increase the exportation of U.S. genetics to Costa Rica,” Cardona explained. We ended our trip by meeting with Evan Mangino who is the USDA Agricultural Counselor to Costa Rica. We discussed our views on the trip, everything learned, the characteristics of the cattle viewed in different regions, and future plans and objectives to best support the individuals we met with in Costa Rica as well as the overall beef market. “This was a big step in opening a line of communication between Costa Rican Brangus breeders and U.S. producers to help further the promotion of the Brangus breed within Costa Rica,” Cardona said. It was so interesting to see the variations from the West Coast to the mountains to the East Coast, and to learn how the beef industry meets and adapts to the specific needs and conditions for each region. “We will continue working diligently with our network of Costa Rican producers and the Costa Rican government to provide support and increased access to high-quality U.S. Brangus genetics selected specifically for tropical climates to help meet the needs of their breeders.” A huge thank you to our fellow breeders in Costa Rica for hosting us and putting together a very informational schedule full of variations of beef market to showcase and for the generous hospitality during our stay. “We are grateful for the opportunity we had to visit Costa Rica and for the gracious hospitality of all of our hosts,” Cardona stated. We look forward to growing our relationship in the future. Pura Vida!

ZACATECAS
Visits TEXAS
by Macee Prause, IBBA International Liaison & Carlos Raul Peña, USLGE Market Representative – Latin America In June 2023, Zacatecas state government approached the United States Livestock Genetics Exports team (USLGE) with the intention of importing several beef breed bulls to incorporate into a program aimed at boosting local production. They committed to launching a project for genetic improvement in beef cattle, wherein the regional livestock union would provide and finance bulls to small and mid-scale producers who meet all the sanitary requirements mandated by federal regulations. In late June, a delegation of five individuals, led by Lic. Lyndiana Bugarin, Sub-Secretary of Agriculture (Livestock) in the state of Zacatecas, conducted a brief tour of the various operations along the Gulf Coast of Texas to observe Brahman, Beefmaster, and Brangus cattle genetics offerings. Their goal is to provide a certain amount of U.S. genetics to their state to increase the quality of the cattle with these genetic offerings. Following the completion of this trip, a shipment of 23 bulls including 9 Brangus sourced from multiple ranches in Texas was exported to Mexico in August. This initiative represented an investment exceeding $120,000 USD by the state of Zacatecas. We hope this initial meeting and shipment will prove to provide the genetics they were looking for and build a long-lasting relationship.
We would like to thank our breeders that were involved in this mission: MBJ Ranch, Santa Rosa Ranch, and Villa Ranch. Thank you for your contributions towards this mission and last-minute schedule rearrangements. It is thanks to the support of our membership that we can graciously host groups such as this one and develop key contacts that allow us to network in the beef industry worldwide. Any country is Brangus country!

HEAD RIGHT ON HUGO ROAD!
BWCC HUGO 484H7 REG. #10472434
Hugo will take your program on the Right Curve Bending Road and is sure to be on many mating lists this fall, especially to breed heifers as he is a calving ease and low birthweight sire that still gives you top tier performance and carcass traits. The first Hugo calves to sell created a ton of excitement as 4 fall weaned heifers sold in 2 different sales to average $18,375! If you like small calves at birth that grow fast, are easy fleshing, good scanning cattle that have super dispositions, then take the Hugo Road this fall. Sired by the current sensation in the breed, BWCC McQueen and out of a Boulder daughter that traces back to Stryker who was also the maternal grandsire of Big Lake.

Town Creek Farm Genetics Generate Commanding Response
The Town Creek Farm Sale signaled a confirmation of an unprecedented opportunity to add Brangus, Ultrablack and VigorMax™ genetics to cattle operations in the southern tier of the US. The offering was highlighted by a set of first-generation 5/8-3/8 Brangus herd bulls that were bred up from Brahman and Angus. The unique genetic offering attracted both new and repeat customers to the Town Creek Farm Bull Sale and Commercial Bred Heifer Sale on October 21, 2023, near West Point, MS. The crew welcomed more than 200 buyers and bidders from 14 states who competed for cattle throughout the afternoon. Overall interest in the sale offering was one of the strongest in the history of Town Creek Farm. Town Creek Farm has long been recognized for its objective and disciplined breeding system that results in cattle that excel in real-world commercial ranching environments. The bull sale line-up offered cattlemen a selection of varying percentages of Angus and Braham to fit their genetic and environmental needs. When the final gavel fell for its final time, 137 Town Creek Farm bulls averaged $7,440 and 209 customer-owned commercial bred heifers averaged $2,885. The sale grossed $1,622,200. Spirited bidding was strong, and sometimes fierce, throughout the entire sale. The winning bid for the top bull lot came from CJ Cattle Company, Altoona, AL at $18,500. Lot 5, TCF Integrity 4329J2, garnered lots of attention prior to sale and had many friends on sale day. The bull offered a complete and balanced package of genetics, data, and phenotype. First-generation Brangus bulls developed from the Town Creek Farm Breeding Up to Brangus were in high demand all day long. Lot 2, TCF Vigor Boost 1065J, was one such outcross genetic opportunity that commanded a selling price of $18,000 and became the second high seller of the sale. Greg Williams of D’Ilberville, MS., outlasted bidders to earn ownership 1065J. TCF Pathfinder 9733J7, Lot 6, was a “looker” with tremendous eye appeal, muscle, and length of side. He caught the attention CJ Cattle Company who paid $16,000 to own him. Lot 6 was one of the highest ratioing bulls of the sale in nearly every

phenotypic trait recorded. Lot 114, TCF Rapid Reward 312K3, a highly sought-after heifer bull, sold for $14,500 to longtime friends and repeat customers, Charlie Creek Cattle Company of FL. Fenco Farms of Florida took home a much raved about new gen bull, Lot 65, TCF Vigor Boost 2365K, for $14,000. The first-generation 5/8/-3/8 Brangus bull had tremendous depth of side and eye appeal and has the potential to be a genetic herd changer. The sale continued at a steady and rhythmic pace supplying cattlemen the opportunity to buy bulls within a variety of budgets.
