A best effort was made to ensure the information in this book is accurate. Years of some events or recipients may be incorrect. Mistakes are inevitable when compiling 75 years of data. Finally, italicized names in listings are members that have passed.

“WHETHER WE HAVE MET HERE TO MAKE HISTORY BY FOUNDING A RECOGNIZED BREED, OR WHETHER WE HAVE JUST HAD A PLEASANT GET-TOGETHER, DEPENDS PURELY AND SIMPLY UPON WHAT WE BREEDERS OURSELVES DO TO CARRY OUT THIS PROGRAM. If we do it according to plan, we have taken an unparalleled forward step in the founding of a new breed that will have cattle of type and quality which meet strict specifications.”

These words were spoken on July 29, 1949, by Carlton Corbin, the day the Brangus Association recognized its beginning. Present that day in Vinita, Oklahoma, were 54 cattlemen representing 16 states and Canada.

“There was much discussion of percentages of Brahman and Angus. Cattlemen in the South wanted more Brahman blood and cattlemen in the North wanted less, but research showed that 3/8/-5/8 was the most effective percentage. And that was the percentage on which the charter members chose to build the breed.” This discussion was recounted by cattleman, Raymond Pope, in an early Brangus Journal.

Much of the early work in crossing Brahman and Angus cattle began as early as 1932. It was done at the USDA Experiment Station in Jeanerette, Louisiana according to the USDA 1935 Yearbook in Agriculture.

During the same time, brothers Frank and Dorsey Buttram of Clear Creek Ranch of Welch, Oklahoma and Grenada, Mississippi, Raymond Pope of Vinita, Oklahoma, the Essar Ranch of San Antonio, Texas, along with a few individual breeders in other parts of the United States and Canada were also carrying on private experimental breeding programs. They were looking for a desirable beef-type animal that would retain the Brahman's natural ability to thrive under adverse conditions in combination with the excellent qualities of Angus, most notably fertility and carcass.

The name Brangus was adopted and the non-profit American Brangus Breeders Association was officially founded on July 29, 1949. All 54 cattlemen in attendance paid a $10 membership fee to become charter members of the ABBA.

Raymond Pope was elected as the first president of the ABBA; Terry Dalehite of Pearsall, Texas as first vice president; Carl Colwick, Stephenville, Texas, as second; Jesse Dowdy, Rayville, Missouri, as third and Carlton Corbin, Ada, Oklahoma, secretary-treasurer.

Pope was handed the dues money and instructed to set up an office and find a secretary. The city of Vinita provided Pope with free office space and the American Brangus Breeders Association was officially in business.

The American Brangus Breeders Association was formed on July 29, 1949. Charter members are from left: Carlton Corbin, Ada, OK; Alfred Pennington, Raymondville, TX; Jesse Dowdy, Otterville, MO; Ralph Scannell, Ringwood, OK; Carl Colwick, Stephenville, TX; Sam Synder, reporter with KVOO TV, Tulsa, OK; Raymond Pope, Vinita, OK; Claude Volyes, Austin, TX; Dick Wheatley, Vinita, OK; Joe B. Member #16…Still Going Strong

JULY 29, 1949…A DATE BRANGUS BREEDERS

SHOULD REMEMBER. On that day, 75 years ago, 54 cattlemen met in Vinita, Oklahoma, to form the American Brangus Breeders Association. Later renamed International Brangus Breeders Association. For Joe Alfred Pennington, that date is easy to remember, it was four days after he was born. His father, James “Alfred” (J.A.) Pennington, was one of the charter members of the ABBA, and it was Joe who allowed that to happen. Alfred wanted to attend the organizational meeting, but he couldn’t leave until the baby (Joe) was born. Joe arrived four days before the meeting was to take place and Alfred was able to go to Vinita, where Brangus history was formed. Circle A Ranch is IBBA Member #16, the lowest active membership number in the Brangus association.

The Penningtons have a cow-calf operation and farm cotton, grain sorghum, corn and sesame in Raymondville, Texas, just 40 miles north of the Mexico border. Alfred had a group of Brahman cows that he was running with Angus bulls. He loved the hardiness of the Brahmans but wanted to improve the price of the calves he sold by adding Angus. He had rented a ranch in Durant, Oklahoma, and met Raymond Pope. Their conversations about the Brahman/Angus cross got Alfred interested in attending the Vinita meeting.

The rest of the story is history, as they say. Joe continued raising the Brangus cattle, along with his wife, Dorthea. Their children, Alfred Spence, Tobin and Ellen are also involved in the family’s operation.

Spence is mainly engaged in farming and day-to-day care of the cattle, while Tobin, a veterinarian in the Corpus Christi, Texas area, helps select the registered bulls they add to their herd and directs their breeding program. Ellen is an attorney in Houston and makes sure they all stay out of trouble. Even though many of Circle A’s cattle are now commercial Brangus cross to meet the demands of their customers, they continue to buy registered bulls while still maintaining a core registered cow herd.

They raise all of their replacement heifers and have established a good market for their bulls in the South Texas environment. They have a pasture right on the main road and develop their bulls there.  The bulls need to have a good temperament, so they are hand-fed every day. The steady stream of repeat bull customers is evidence that they are breeding cattle that fit that climate and the demands of those cattlemen.

It’s impressive that IBBA Member #16 is still going strong as it has passed through the generations. And who knows, maybe Alfred #4, Spence’s new son Harrison Alfred, will continue the family tradition of raising good Brangus cattle.

Nuggets From the Past

The Movie Giant was GIANT for Brangus

Probably the greatest single promotional event for the breed in the 50s was the appearance of Raymond Pope‘s "King Tut" bull in the film classic Giant. Tut appeared with Pope at the halter next to stars Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor in a key scene, and his breed "Brangus" was referred to for audiences worldwide. Pope later recalled in an interview published in the Brangus Journal that "It was a good promotion for the breed, and besides, I got $13,000 for the use of Tut.”

Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson with King Tut during the filming of Giant. At halter of the famous bull is his owner, Raymond Pope.

Million Dollar Bull

The famous and glitzy “Granada Gala” held in the ballroom of Houston’s Shamrock Hilton Hotel made history in 1985. Forty-four lots grossed $5.6 million to average $128,696, a figure that will never be topped. Five-sixths interest in Paragon, the 1985 International Champion Bull, sold for $1.3 million to become the first Brangus bull to top one million dollars at public auction.

Did you know?

In 1957 the American Brangus Brangus Association had income from 30 states, three provinces in Canada, old Mexico, Cuba, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Guatemala. The top 10 states were Oklahoma, Arizona, Texas, Missouri, Ohio (tied), Arkansas (tied), Florida, Virginia, Minnesota, and Louisiana.

IN 2019, THE IBBA SHOW COMMITTEE INSTITUTED A NEW HONOR TO RECOGNIZE A LIFETIME OF EXCELLENCE IN HERDSMANSHIP, ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE EXHIBITION OF BRANGUS CATTLE, AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE BRANGUS BREED AND THE PUREBRED BEEF INDUSTRY. This award is to be called, “The Lifetime Achievement Award in the Exhibition of Brangus Cattle.”

A group within the show committee was tasked with proposing names for whom this inaugural honor would be bestowed upon. When the group came back to the committee, there was only one name and one man: Jake White. It is for his life, his achievements, and the example he set for the

generations after him, that the IBBA was honored to present the IBBA Lifetime Achievement Award for the Exhibition of Brangus Cattle to him posthumously.

Since the award was first given, it has been renamed and is now called the Jake White Lifetime Achievement Award.

WINNERS OF THIS AWARD ARE DETERMINED BY VOTES FROM THE BRANGUS HERDSMEN AND FITTERS. Recipients of this prestigious award are noted for their professionalism, excellence of skills and abilities as well as willingness to deal with the public positively and politely. Brangus herdsmen and fitters of show cattle perform a valuable service in promoting the Brangus breed, livestock shows and other related events across the country.

Walking into the Brangus History Books…

BC Getze 206/3

AS AL FACE LED HIS 2275-POUND BRANGUS BULL INTO THE RING AT THE 1966 HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW, it probably never crossed his mind that he was walking into the Brangus history books. When Judge Bill Brodnax, Jr. slapped Face's bull, BC Getze 206/3, owned by the Bruce Church Ranch of Yuma, Arizona, as grand champion, he was also selected the first grand champion of the long-running International Brangus Show.

Not only was Getze grand champion bull, but he was also the first animal to walk into the newly constructed Astrohall. Getze and his handlers arrived from Arizona at 3 a.m. when he was led into the hall and greeted by reporters and photographers.

Al Face also had a storied history with the Brangus breed. Face served as the IBBA President for two years 1963-65 and served on the IBBA board for 19 years. He was ranch manager for the Bruce Church Ranch and later for Pruett-Wray Cattle Company. Face attended the 50th Anniversary Celebration in 1999 where he represented the earliest term of presidency at the event. He passed in 2014.

And so it was…

Terry R. Dalehite was a Charter Member and First Vice President of the original ABBA officers. He recalled staying up all night in the Vinita Hotel on the eve of July 29, 1949, along with Raymond Pope and Carlton Corbin writing the bylaws that were to govern the ABBA.

At that time, the Brangus cattle needed to be recognized as a breed by all livestock breeders. Overtures were made to the Houston and Fort Worth Livestock Shows to include Brangus classifications in their livestock expositions. These overtures were declined because Brangus cattle were considered just another crossbreed.

Dalehite was ranching in Pearsall, Texas, and was on the executive board of directors of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition (SALE). It became imperative that Brangus cattle be recognized as a breed of cattle, so he initiated efforts and successfully got the SALE to recognize Brangus as a breed by allowing them to show at their 1950 show. Subsequently, Brangus was recognized by the Houston and Fort Worth Livestock Shows and later by the world.
