Drought Conditions May Create Unexpected Opportunity by DR. JOSEPH MASSEY The impact of the 2011 drought in the South Plains States has been extremely devastating to all involved in agriculture. Todd Staples, Commissioner of Agriculture in Texas, has estimated that the losses will exceed six billion dollars in Texas alone. CattleFax estimates that our national beef herd will lose another 750,000 head of cattle in 2011. Most if not all reduction in cattle numbers will come from the South Plains States like Texas and Oklahoma where the drought has produced record low rainfall and extremely hot conditions. Cow kill rates are up 25% in Texas, emphasizing the fact that Texas and Oklahoma will have a major reduction in mature cow numbers going into 2012. This trend will not change until the drought conditions break. In fact, it probably will be late 2012 before we know how the South Plains States recover from the extended period of drought. While in the short term the situation for cattle producers may be very stressful, in the long term the outlook for strong cattle prices looks good. CattleFax anticipates that good, young breeding stock will see prices jump $500 per head or more on average in 2012, and seed stock cattle will jump even more. Demand for beef at the

retail level is high and prices are expected to stay strong into 2012 and beyond, thus setting up the national beef herd to expand for a number of years. It was anticipated that 2011 would be an expansion year for the national beef herd, but the drought conditions have been so severe that the down turn in cow numbers has been blamed solely on drought conditions and not the U.S. economy. Better than 55% of all Brangus cattle on inventory with IBBA are found in Texas and Oklahoma, potentially making the next year difficult for the association but in the longer term setting the Brangus breed for better than normal growth. The overall attributes of Brangus and the strong presence in the South Plains States only reassures that Brangus will have to proliferate in these states once we get past the drought conditions. There is probably no better beef breed animal to repopulate the South Plains States. Going into the fall, the number of Brangus cattle on inventory has surprisingly stayed strong and is only down 3.3% year over year. While drought conditions have worsened throughout the year, the preliminary numbers have stayed remarkably stable and will probably be more of a function of when the drought breaks. The sooner we get rains the more likely it is that inventory numbers will hold. If the drought continues for the rest of the year sell off could accelerate. Now is not the time to abandon your breeding program, and making arrangements to purchase EPD bulls that meet your goals and objectives may be more important this year than in the past, since the next several years could be very strong for selling replacement animals. Now is the time to reaffirm your breeding program and make sure that your young animals will be of genetic quality that will be in demand as we come out of this drought. I believe that we all see demand increasing as the drought ends but selecting bulls this fall and this coming spring may take on new meaning for your breeding program. Make sure you know what your breeding goals are and that you give yourself the very best chance of obtaining success. Adverse conditions sometimes create new opportunities and we should all examine what opportunities may exist for our cattle programs - and it will not be the same for all operations. I am sure that many of us have learned things about our operations that were unexpected and this may be the best reason to understand that no one else can develop a program for you. We need to acknowledge that we are accountable for our own operations, and find the very best bulls that work for us. BJ ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Massey has served as Executive Vice President of the IBBA since 2004. In 2007, he started Genetic Performance Solutions, LLC, a breed registry services and performance analysis company serving the cattle and breed association industry— an IBBA owned company. GPS manages online registry programs for breed associations and the data base management of performance data like multi-breed EPDs.

PERSONTOPERSON Random Thoughts by ANGELO ZOTTARELLI, IBBA President The beginning of the cattle sale season is here, giving all of us the opportunity to purchase animals that will upgrade and enhance our herd. I want to provide some guidelines for buyers that address some issues members have raised about past sales and private treaty purchases. First, the buyer should always ask the seller for his IBBA membership number. This will ensure the seller is a member in good standing with the Association. Second, the buyer should ask to see the registration papers of the animal. This will ensure that the animal is truly a registered Brangus animal and will also guarantee that the animal is up to date in the registry system. Third, when purchasing an animal, do your homework! It does not matter how slick the advertisement is or how nice the picture looks. To find out statistical information on the animal, pull it up by its registration number to see if its EPD’s are what you are looking for and if it fits into your herd. If it is female, check to see if she’s been calving on a regular basis. And fourth, look the animal over in person before making your purchase. Check the feet, the udder, the underline (if that is an important quality in your area) and check the disposition. In short, do your homework and “kick the tires”. Finally, make sure that the owner has a return policy

before you purchase the animal. By sticking to these guidelines, you will be much more likely to make a great purchase this season. We just finished a board meeting in San Antonio where we were addressed by some of our membership with concerns, and the board will be responding to those concerns shortly. This brings me to remind all of you that when the board meets, the meeting is open to any and all members, so if you want to come and visit please do. Your board members are also available for you to contact any time you want; we serve you and want to hear from you. So if you don’t see them at sales and meetings seek them out! Most of the board members don’t bite. I can’t end without mentioning the severe drought, fires and economy that are affecting some, if not all of us. But instead of looking at the glass as half empty, I choose to look at it as half full. This breed Association is well positioned to survive these hard times. We are financially secure, we are doing things to position ourselves for the future, and we are looking for branding opportunities for you. As many of you are aware, we are promoting the breed at trade shows and cattle meetings across the country. So in my opinion you can rest assured that the IBBA will be there for you. And when it comes to the individual breeder I know that many of you, me included, have some hard decisions to make regarding your herd, such as, how many can you feed this winter? What’s the cost of corn and hay going to be? How long will this drought last? I want all of you to remember it will rain again, what goes up will come down, and the economy is cyclical. So hang in there and make necessary changes, but don’t give up. When this all turns around we will be able to advance this breed and our individual herds. I want us all to be part of the last cattleman standing. bj ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Angelo is actively involved in the ranching business running a herd of Registered and Commercial Brangus cattle on ranches in Hamilton and Mills Countries, Texas. He has served as President of the Texas Brangus Breeders Association . Zottarelli has served on the Finance Committee, Promotions Committee and was Chair of the Commercial Marking Committee. He also served as the Chairman of Brangus Publications.. He is also a member of The Hill Country Brangus Breeders, West Texas Brangus Breeders Associations and the Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association.

Marketing Update Look for the Silver Lining by Ben Spitzer, IBBA Marketing Programs Director By now, if you haven’t heard about the hardships of cattle producers in Texas, Oklahoma and other parts of the country, you have been living under a rock. We hear stories daily on how others are dealing with the drought and all the problems that come along with an absence of water. A small silver lining for those reeling from the drought is the fairly favorable cull cow prices and record high calf prices seen this year. For those fortunate to have received moisture this year, there are huge opportunities in the years ahead. Global beef demand will increase tremendously as US beef finds its way into more and more foreign markets and the domestic economy grinds out of the current state. Currently we are hovering around 90,000,000 head of cattle, about the same number as 1955; however, the US population has more than doubled since 1955. Experts expect the world population to increase by more than 700 million people in the next 10 years. As populations gain affluence, they also gain a large appetite for beef. Beef demand drives profitability for the commercial beef producer. When rain returns to the southern plains, there will be a tremendous demand for replacement females. Because of the location of the restocking and their known maternal excellence, Brangus bulls

are a great fit for forward thinkers looking to capture added value in the replacement female marketplace. There is always a great demand for Brangus sired females, and we should remind our customers it takes Brangus bulls to sire them. While the short term pain of drought and hard economic times is hard to get through, look for the opportunity to pull you through. As a breed known for maternal excellence and profitable feeder calves, Brangus has a tremendous future.

IJBBA on the Horizon

Extra Effort by Daniel Watson, IJBBA Director

2011 SRJBS Show Sponsors & Contributors:

It’s that time of year again. The fall shows are fast approaching and now is the time everyone’s weaning their potential show prospects. It’s time to bring them in and put in all the hard work to make sure they are ready for the spring shows. This is the time of year where the winners and losers are separated. The winners are putting in the extra time and effort. They’re already doing the little things that most overlook, just so their animals will be their absolute best come show day. Meanwhile, the losers are putting in the least possible effort or just enough to skim through the show season. But my question to you is WHY? Why go through all the time, effort, and money and not do everything in your power to do your absolute best. Now, I’d like to clarify that being a winner or loser is not determined by if you win your class or Grand Champion. Being a winner or loser in the show ring is determined solely by you, not a judge. If you get 5th place in your class, but you know you did everything in your power to maximize your calf’s potential, that to me is just as successful as winning the class. And by the same token, if you win the class while putting in hardly any effort, when with a little more effort you could have had a shot at Grand, that is the real loser in my eyes. Not everyone will be able to go out and spend a lot of money on a calf that will have a chance to win everywhere you go. But that’s not the point of showing a calf anyway. The point of showing is to have fun, learn valuable life lessons, and make lifelong friends. And the best part about showing is you don’t have to show the best calf in the barn to do any of these things, you just have to put in a little hard work. I’d like to take this opportunity to challenge each of you to go the extra mile this year. Spend the extra ten minutes out at the barn working with your calf, and I am positive that at the end of the show season you will see the difference and be surprised at what a little extra effort can do. Also, I would like to say to all of our friends in Texas who are battling severe drought and wildfires, you have a lot of friends in this Brangus community that are thinking about and praying for you.
