BRANGUS PUBLICATIONS presents highlights of BRANGUS FUTURITY & NATIONAL JUNIOR BRANGUS SHOW 2017

A Letter from the Executive Vice President Congratulations to the exhibitors of the 40th Anniversary National Junior Brangus Show and the 2017 International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) Futurity Show. Your hard work and dedication to exhibit the best genetic and phenotypic BrangusÂŽ, Red Brangus, UltrablackÂŽ and Ultrared cattle were evident in Texarkana. The IBBA Board of Directors and staff were proud to support your efforts and look forward to the upcoming year. No good deed goes unnoticed, no matter how small or how large. It is encouraging to see positive mentoring taking place at this event each year. The younger children looking up to the high school youth, the high schoolers mimicking the college students, and everyone watching the leadership of the adults. Taking a positive and upbeat attitude is fun to watch as it always trumps the negative. Giving your all, whether first or last in class, makes you a winner in my books. The junior board members planning, coordination and completion of every event was very impressive. Your preparedness allowed everyone to have the best shot possible to give their all. You are gaining valuable leadership experience that will stay with you the rest of your life. We look forward to your continued leadership in IBBA when you age out of the youth program. Thanks to everyone who donated their time and money to the junior association. No matter the size of the ranch or where you live, we all have opportunities to affect the Brangus breed and impact its long legacy in the beef industry. Thank you for positively supporting the youth and show programs of our great breed. - IBBA Executive Vice President Tommy Perkins, PhD., PAS

IJBBA Celebrates 40-Year Anniversary by International Brangus Auxiliary Board Member and Historian Jodi Jackson 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the International Junior Brangus Breeders Association (IJBBA). Much has changed in that time span. Cattle in those days had lots of leg, with very little body. Clothes and hairstyles were, undoubtedly, much simpler. There was no such thing as a blingy show stick or custom-tooled leather show harness. When the family headed to the shows, a map made of paper was used, not one on your phone. Much has changed, but one thing that remains the same is the kids. Junior Brangus breeders still look forward to the National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS) and are eager to reunite with the friends they have made at past shows. Newcomers are surprised by the helpfulness of their neighbors in the aisle and the many competitions that each exhibitor can participate in at the junior show. A few of the juniors were asked about their experience at this year’s NJBS, and here are their comments.

Cade Amber and Wyatt Drews

Cade (left) & Wyatt (right)

For 13-year-old cousins, Cade Amber and Wyatt Drews, the NJBS is all about the competitions. Cade is the son of Greg and Stacy (Drews) Amber, of Lorena, Texas, and Wyatt’s parents are Josh and Lisa Drews, of Marlin, Texas. Josh and Stacy grew up in the Brangus business and were active IJBBA members. Stacy attended her first national junior show in 1989, and Josh began in 1991. There were six second-generation IJBBA members from this family at this year’s national show. In addition to Cade and Wyatt, siblings Emalee Amber, Zane, Adele, and Lily Drews followed their parents’ footsteps by competing at the national Brangus show. “I like to improve my knowledge of Brangus, and the cattle industry, so I can become a Brangus breeder and follow in my father’s footsteps someday,” Wyatt remarks, explaining that the quiz bowl and public speaking events help him to learn those skills. He, also, likes working on his showmanship techniques, which help him to get his animals looking their best in the show ring. Cade agrees, “I work hard at improving my showmanship skills, so I can show my animal at her best.” He, also, enjoys the fitting and judging contests and the skillathon. Both teenagers admitted that they enjoy traveling to new places and making friends from far away.

Our Junior members are the future of our association and the future of our breed.. ! 4

Claire Smart

Showing Brangus is definitely a family affair for Claire Smart and her family. The 21-year-old from Runge, Texas, along with her parents, Don and Connie, and sisters, Caitlynn and Caryn, are the only ranch hands for their Brangus operation, and the girls do all the work of breaking and working the show cattle. “The NJBS is our family vacation,” says Claire. “Our whole family usually comes, but this year, Caitlynn had to stay home on baby watch, keeping an eye on a heifer that was due to calve,” she explains. This is the seventh national junior show that Claire has attended. Of great significance was that five of the six head they hauled to the NJBS were bred and owned. The Smarts started with blacks, but they have been adding some reds into their program. “I like learning about the different genetics and interacting with more breeders,” Claire replies. One of Claire’s favorites at this year’s NJBS was the lunch and learn. “I enjoyed learning more about feeds, judging, and expected progeny differences (EPDS),” she comments. Claire will soon be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Service and Development. She will return this fall to pursue an additional degree in accounting.

Carlee Taylor

At only eight years old, Carlee Taylor was participating in her second NJBS. Carlee and her five-year-old brother, Truman, have a strong history with the Brangus breed even at their young ages. They are the children of Laura Lee (Black) and Carlton Taylor of Lakeland, Florida. Laura Lee, a former IJBBA president, attended her first NJBS in 1995. Carlee participated in all of the junior contests. She replies, “Making the advertisement for that contest was a lot of fun, until the computer quit cooperating.” She, also, enjoyed meeting people from all around the country and making new friends. Many of the friends Carlee has made through the IJBBA, also, attended the Legacy Conference that she attended last year and was happy to reconnect with them at the national show. It’s obvious that Carlee’s mom, Laura Lee, has a passion for the Brangus breed and instilling that into her children. “This teaches hard work and something to believe in,” she concluded.

Zevian Wilson

First-time NJBS exhibitor Zevian Wilson made quite an impact at his Brangus show debut. Zevian attended the show with his agricultural science teacher, Steve McGown. “Zevian had gone out to the truck while I waited for him to come back. He seemed to be taking a long time and I was wondering what had happened. Apparently he had found some money in the parking lot and was going through the barns trying to find its owner,” McGown says proudly. Zevian admits he learned a lot at the NJBS, and he was impressed by how helpful everyone was. His favorite experiences were the barnyard olympics and showing his heifer. Zevian,15, lives in Hooks, Texas, with McGown and his wife, Christi.

. .from the Beaches of Texarkana!

A Junior’s Perspective

by Madelaine Pack

Howdy, all! My name is Madelaine Pack. I am a young lady who had all the dreams and desire to play on a state-championship basketball team. You see, I am from a one-stop-light, if-you-blink-you’ll-missit kind of town. You have two options: either play sports and be good at them or play sports. Growing up in this small town, everyone knows who you are, what you drive, and where you live. Living like this keeps you to a higher standard. Let me break it down for you. I am the daughter of Johnny and Lorie Pack, and I have two older siblings, John and Amanda. My dad is tall, and he was the defense football captain who started varsity as a freshman. He was recognized all-district, and he played for the district champions, back when only first place advanced. My mom played for the State Runner-Up Lady Jacket Basketball Team. My sister, Amanda, is very tall and very athletic. She was the starting post for two statechampionship teams, and she was recognized alldistrict and all-state. And last but not least, there is me standing a towering 5 feet 4 inches. I’m sure you can guess where I fell in the lineup on the court. With the town knowing so much about my parents’ and my siblings’ success on the field and on the court, there was no way I could let them down. I had the heart to be one of the best on the team. However, after suffering two knee injuries followed by surgery and rehabilitation, my time as a Boyd Lady Jacket had to come to an end.

“I wish I would have known then what I know now.” 6

After putting to rest my athletic dreams, I was approached by my principal to join FFA. I wish I would have known then, what I know now. Today, I would have gladly traded that athletic dream for more time as a cattle livestock exhibitor. With some guidance from my ag teacher, we decided on black Brangus – one of the best decisions me and my family could have made. My parents are the rock and foundation of our showing and breeding program. My mom, Lorie, is the historian. She takes notes, pictures, pictures, and more pictures so that we can see progress in our show herd and have correct ring-side presentation of the calves. My dad, Johnny, is our genetics expert. He studies expected progeny differences (EPDs), conducts business transactions, and oversees all registration of our herd. My showing career with Brangus cattle began in 2011, but I had shown other species before this moment in my life. Here is the turning point of my story and really where our success all began. In preparation for my senior year show season, we made arrangements for my family and I to attend the 2012 JLS International Sale in May. This sale included their fall offering of show heifer prospects. With many hours spent studying EPDs, sale lot videos, and discussing what would be the best buy for our program, I had made a decision on what I wanted. Mind you, my senior year of high school was 20122013; the purchase that was made was to be my last project as a high school member. With anticipation of the sale beginning, my daddy and I took one last walk through the pens. With exhilaration, I pulled daddy aside to share with him my final decision. He informed me that Lot 7 was probably out of our price range and that I should pick one more lot just incase.

Here is the letter I sent to JLS International following the conclusion of my senior year.

Dear JLS Internatio nal, My name is Madelai ne Pack, a Boyd FF A Member. Everything I have ev er dreamed of came true this year with the help of your ranc h and genetics. Last May, my parents and I attended your sale and purchased Lot 7, daughter of Skyhawks Presiden te and Ms JLS Min erva. We thought long and hard as to what her name shou ld be because we knew she would be sp ecial. Ms JLS Eleano r, because Eleanor sounded classy and was the name of a Fi rst Lady. Little did we know she wa s going to be a huge part of the memorie I will cherish for the s rest of my life. As a show team, my parents, Ellie, and I accomplished the fo llowing in the 2013 Major show season: Fort Worth Stock Sh ow- Reserve Division Junior Heifer San Angelo Stock Show- Reserve Gran d Champion Brangu San Antonio Stock s Female Show-1st in Class Houston Livestock Show-Reserve Gran d Champion Brangu s Female

Winning first in cl ass at all four major s and placing in Division or better wi th the same heifer wa s more than my family and I could have ever dreamed of . Thank you so much for all you do , not only for your community but for sharing your succes s and rich knowledg e of the Brangus breed with the youth of Texas and other pa ssionate cattle herdsmen. You will never know what yo u have shared with my small little fam ily. Again, thank you, and we pray fo blessings upon you r and your family.

Love, Madelaine Pack, John ny &

As a young girl with tears in her eyes I looked up at my dad and said, “Daddy, just get stupid! Needless to say, Lot 7 was ours. With pure excitement we headed home not knowing what amount of joy she would bring us. All heifers have a personality, and our Ellie, was and still is a true champion with her devotion and dedication. Her spirit, desire and willingness only exhilarated you to do more, excel more. Exiting any

Lorie, and Ms. JLS Eleanor

show ring, you knew she gave all she had just for you. Ellie will remain a part of our family, and her duties now include eating everything in sight and being a top-producing donor cow. There was a slight break in our cattle showing experience due to numerous bulls being born to our show team. With each of using our talents and expertise in our show program, my daddy, with his fervent study and determination, made the decision

7

to breed Ellie with Doguet’s Hercules 88S3. That breeding decision resulted in our show program retaking off with the birth of our very first show heifer, who is now our next donor cow, Jade. Jade quickly exceeded all our expectations with her phenotype and excellence in the show ring beginning as a young heifer calf, through her award of Grand Champion Cow Calf Pair at the recent National Junior Brangus Show and, also, the Grand Champion Cow Calf Pair at the Brangus Futurity in Texarkana, Arkansas. Our show family grew to include my cousins, Emma and Molly Pack, who exhibit Pack Ponderosa Cattle through their local FFA program in the junior age division. Through their experiences of showing cattle, they have had the opportunity to meet many new people and make friends of all ages through the International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) and the ag program and allow our cattle to be exhibited. In the spring of 2016, we had the need to purchase an additional show heifer for our show team because of the aging out of a show heifer and more bull calves being born. We made the decision to call on our very first breeder, Ricky and Rhonda Johnston of Johnston Cattle Company in Waxahachie, Texas, for a show heifer prospect for our show team. We knew instantly when we saw “Ruby Lee” that she was the one. Ruby Lee, along with Jade, has continued to exceed all our expectations in the show ring. At the Fort Worth Regional Show, she won Grand Champion Brangus Female. She, also, won Champion Calf at Fort Worth Stock Show and the San Antonio Livestock Show, and she won Reserve Grand Champion at San Angelo in the junior program. In Texarkana, Arkansas, Ruby Lee was the Reserve Champion Yearling Heifer at the National Junior Brangus Show and Grand Champion Female at the Brangus Futurity. We are excited for Ruby Lee to continue in her dam’s footsteps. DDD MS Tonto 209P2 was the 2006 National Junior Brangus Show Grand Champion Female. Pack Ponderosa is proud to have this champion bloodline in our herd. I would encourage all exhibitors to attend the National Junior Brangus Show. This will give them the opportunity to meet exhibitors from all parts of the United States and to personally meet and work with the International Junior Brangus Breeders Association (IJBBA) staff and board members.

“Knowledge is everything.” We have learned so much in the last two years. After meeting many of the IBBA board members and some representatives at livestock shows, we learned that showing doesn’t stop when you graduate from high school. Being a junior member through age 21 allows for continuation of these experiences and competition past high school. Going to the National Junior Brangus Show will provide excellent experience through the comraderies gained with the exhibitors throughout the week. In addition to the opportunity to compete in showmanship and the actual livestock competition, many other competitions include the ability to show off other skill sets that are learned throughout livestock showing experiences to include sales speech, cattle fitting, and cattle breed knowledge and expertise. As a breeder, I benefitted and enjoyed the ability to sit down with other breeders, examine the cattle from all parts of the United States, and interact and receive encouragement from Tyler Dean and the IJBBA board members. It is always encouraging at the shows and other Brangus functions to also interact with Tommy Perkins, PhD., PAS and the incredible staff of IBBA. I appreciate that they have always encouraged me and continue to encourage my family in every step of the way. It is important that any breeder know that all the staff are personable and that they are there for you. The best decision in mine and my family’s life was to show and breed Brangus cattle.
