IBBA CONNECTION // MESSAGE FROM IBBA PRESIDENT
A Message from the President by IBBA President Doyle Miller I am writing this on the day after Veterans Day. By the time this edition of the Brangus Journal is published, Thanksgiving will have passed and we will be looking forward to Christmas. This time of year there are a lot of festivities and gatherings that we all enjoy attending. This is also time to selfevaluate, to take inventory so to speak. I have come to realize how truly blessed we are, and a lot of those blessings come from the sacrifices of others: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Men and women that have served and are serving in the United States Armed Forces to protect our freedoms. Parents that worked long and hard to give their children a better life. Lifelong friendships made and the fruits of those relationships Co-workers whose hard work makes the company they work for more successful Spouses that love us even when we are not lovable Relationships we have made in the cattle business. Most of all the birth of Jesus Christ, who loves us beyond comprehension.
In this holiday season we need to express our thanks, tell people we love them, and show that we are thankful for them. Let them know ust how important they are to us. In closing I want to say a special thank you to: Dr. Perkins and the IBBA staff The fellow directors with whom I serve, The members of the IBBA My wife and family And Jesus Christ Merry Christmas and God Bless!

IBBA CONNECTION // EXECUTIVE CORNER
Executive Corner by IBBA Executive Vice President Tommy Perkins, PhD., PAS
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone that is reading this article. Hopefully you are like me and have just enjoyed a blessed and thankful Thanksgiving weekend. I am guessing some of you even got in a safe and fruitful “Black Friday” season. Many of our members have received record rainfall for the past two months along with cooler than normal temperatures. It seems like everyone has had trouble finding enough dry days to get grass mowed down and baled this fall. I found fall armyworm invasions to be a common topic to discuss around the country as well. It seems like South Texas went from a significant drought through the month of August which was followed by very heavy rainfalls from September through November. We also welcomed in an earlier than usual hard freeze in early November that has shut off all plant growth until next spring. The feeder calf market has stayed pretty steady this fall but the cull cow and bull market has really stayed lower than desired. I have patiently watched the fat cattle market just flail around the $110 to $115 level without any real reasons behind it. I was sure hopeful we would see a nice improvement in the fat cattle market but various things have contributed to the packers reluctance in moving the bids higher. The good news is I continue to see excellent yield and quality grade data from retained ownership Brangus and Ultrablack cattle that have gone on to be harvested recently. The purebred auction scene has been pretty steady as well the past several months. In my travels, I have found that the “good ones” are being marketed at a high level whereas the average to less quality animals have found it difficult to get the desired prices. I don’t see this changing anytime soon so we probably should sharpen our knives and use them on some of the marginal bull calves. It is also time to be a bit more diligent on our culling criteria as we begin to identify females to be kept as replacements and/or sold in our purebred sales.

IBBA CONNECTION // PREPARING FOR WINTER
Preparing for Winter Santa has a list and so do we!
by Content Specialist, Maclaine Shults
Winter is almost here, the holidays are right around the corner and we all know what that means – time to winterize the barn, the house and everything in between! Many experts are calling for a tough season throughout the country, but since no one knows exactly when the bad winter’s going to hit or how long it will stay, we decided to help out with your To-Do list in order to prepare your family and your livestock for whatever comes your way. Here are a few steps to winterizing your farm or ranch and some tips on how to prepare for potentially bad weather! 1.) Get your feedstuff and forages stored away One of the obvious yet most important steps is making sure that your hay and straw supplies are organized, protected and ready to go. That means getting it hauled in from the fields and stacking bales at a reasonable distance away from where you feed your livestock. Check your hay supply protein and total digestible nutrients (TDN) so you can calculate your herds nutritional requirements and decide what supplemental resources you may need before you actually need them! Providing ample shelter to keep your forages dry from rain, sleet, snow or ice is also helpful. Having a game-plan in place to access your bales should you need to move snow or get around mud is also a great way to make your winter feeding routine a little less stressful. Your forages aren’t the only ones that need protecting though. Getting a head start on storing grains before the bad winter weather, is essential to proper livestock management. They also need to be stored in a dry, secure area that can be easily accessed. Worst-casescenario, the feed truck won’t be able to deliver grain so it’s up to you to make sure there is enough feedstuffs on hand to get your livestock safely through a tough winter season. Keeping animals well fed is the first step to keeping them healthy during the colder months. 2.) Prepare you facilities If you can get a head start on winterizing your facilities, you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches and cold fingers when those frozen nights hit. Double or triple check your extension cords, tank heaters and
electric waterers to make sure they are running well. Have a feed door hinge that needs fixing? Well, better get on it and guarantee your feed supplies stay dry in case you catch some extra precipitation. Don’t forget, we’re not the only ones trying to stay warm during cold weather…rodents are too. Mice and rats commonly invade homes, barns or other structures like vehicles in order to stay out of the winter weather. They are attracted to indoor supplies like grain, pet food and even garbage. The scariest part about a rodent invasion, however, is the risk of damage to your property and the transmission of disease. Check to make sure any visible holes in your structures are patched and free from added moisture. Stainless steel pads are a great blocker of rodents, when sealed with caulk or other nibble-proof material. Bait stations and traps need to be set and checked regularly in order to prevent and remove as many unwanted, whiskered guests as possible. 3.) Consider adding protective structures If you don’t have them already, windbreaks and other covered structures are a good thing to have during the winter seasons. By limiting cattle stress from cold and/ or windy conditions you can dramatically reduce the energy requirements of cows! 4.) Have your calving supplies organized Many of us calve during the winter months and we all know that trying to find supplies in the cold weather is no fun for us or the cattle. So, before it gets really chilly and miserable out there, go ahead and find all the supplies you think you might need! Get them CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

15
IBBA CONNECTION // PREPARING FOR WINTER CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 cleaned up and organized in an easy-to-haul container which will save you and your cattle stress when the time comes. 5.) Get your emergency supplies organized Many of us I’m sure have a story about running out in the cold, with only our barn shoes, a scarf and the flashlight on our phones to help us take care of an emergency. So why not make yourself an emergency kit ahead of time and be ready for those fly-out-thedoor moments for once? Get your overalls, thick jackets, hats, gloves and boots clean and put together by the door. Check the batteries in your flashlights and have several available in a tub or bucket, along with any other household items you need to use in the barn in case of emergencies. While you’re at it, make sure the batteries in your larger “toys” are good in case you need to make a quicker trip to the end of the pasture. 6.) Watch your weaning For those that don’t have fall-calving herds, make sure your spring babies are weaned and properly vaccinated. The fewer lactating cows on hand that need extra supplemental nutrition, the lower your stress levels and feed bills. If calves are properly managed and given the right vaccines, they’ll stand a better chance of remaining healthy throughout the season. 7.) Assess cattles’ Body Condition Scores (BCS) Fall is the best time to assess BCS in cows with calves already at their side. Schedule pregnancy checks with your vet as soon as possible. This will help you identify
those cows that need to be culled as well as giving you an opportunity to pre-wean vaccinated calves. By following a good pre-weaning protocol, you set yourself up for success when it’s time to vaccinate in the spring and help build-up those babies immune systems. Your bulls can be evaluated as well! Check their feet, legs, BCS and make sure to keep an eye out for any penile injuries. If you think a bull has lost too much weight during breeding season, you may need to reevaluate your nutrition plan and make sure you can get them what they need. 8.) Do you Honey-Dos With as much joy as the holiday seasons bring, the extra stress for everyone is undeniable. No one likes being out in the cold hanging lights, fixing fence, putting up lawn care supplies or winterizing the farm equipment, so get a head start on it now! Hang those lights a little early, dedicate a day to the yard, grab a friend and a portable radio and get that fence fixed up before the weather gets bad. Then when the days get cold and gloomy, you can spend less time outside worrying and enjoy the cozy warmth of home and family longer, after your regular feeding chores are done! We know that as livestock owners and producers, we never really get a “holiday break.” But, with a little perseverance and extra planning, you can make the winter season easier on yourself and your livestock, while setting the stage for a more successful spring!

AFFILIATE CONNECTION // FOR THE LOVE OF KIDS & CATTLE
For the Love of Kids & Cattle The Driving Force Behind the Texas Junior Brangus Breeders Associations’ Exceptional Growth and Success in 2018 by Content Specialist, Maclaine Shults Though experts have yet to prove that everything is “bigger in Texas” the statement does in fact hold true for the Texas Junior Brangus® Breeders Association (TJBBA). The TJBBA saw exponential growth in membership in 2018 and is one of the first, independent junior associations to extend an open invitation to other out-of-state exhibitors to participate in their annual state show. The secret behind their success is found in the love of kids and their love of Brangus® cattle. “It’s a show [and an organization] for the kids, put on by the kids,” says Connie Smart a second-term TJBBA advisor. Smart along with fellow advisors; Chris Mckee, Greg Amber and Stephanie Towns play an integral role in the organization and success of the TJBBA but have made it a goal to let the junior members lead the program. With 12 junior directors and four adult advisors, the TJBBA is a melting pot of ideas. “The four of us advisors try really hard to take a step back and just advise,” said Smart. “We encourage the kids to bring ideas, write things down, share their likes and dislikes and discuss what they may want to change.” Ultimately, the decisions regarding plans and events for the association are made by the junior directors. Directors and advisors meet four times a year beginning in August with the three other meetings preluding the Brangus shows at Fort Worth, Houston and their own state show. This makes the TJBBA unique, as it allows its young members to gain first-hand experience in professional collaboration, financial planning

// DECEMBER 2018
and public communication which according to Smart, has played a big part in membership growth. “The last couple of years, the growth has been tremendous,” she says. “We haven’t experienced any issues or had anyone not want to be a part of the show so, whatever it is [we’re doing] it’s working!” The TJBBA hasn’t always boasted such high membership numbers however, they have had to overcome several challenges to reach this milestone. “About three to four years ago, we weren’t growing,” said Smart. “We were nervous about numbers, so we talked about adding a percentage show in order to increase them.” This meant that one parent-animal must be a registered Brangus but from there, the remaining heritage of the cattle wasn’t a concern. Unfortunately, the TJBBA board and advisors were met with much backlash from other breeders. The argument was, the TJBBA was not staying true to the Brangus breed by allowing all different types of pedigrees and hide-colors to enter the show ring regardless of the positive increase seen in exhibitor entries. The advisors met and discussed the issue. In the end, it was decided that if the kids wanted to continue the percentage show, entry numbers remained high and the funds continued to benefit the youth involved, why not allow it? Another challenge regarding Red Brangus came about on the heels of prior criticism. At the time, Black and Red Brangus cattle didn’t show separately. Red Brangus breeders did not support the percentage show, nor the lack of an exclusive Red Brangus
division. Again, the junior directors were approached with the issue and together with their advisors, voted to resolve it. Since then the TJBBA state show now has both black and red Brangus owned-shows, with numbers of red cattle entries and junior directors who show predominantly Red Brangus growing. The TJBBA hosts their state show every year at the Brazos County Expo Center. Members and their families come from all over the state to show Brangus projects and participate in other contests. One of the first big changes made to the TJBBA state show, began when an advisor noticed the strain the event was putting on their show families. With the expo center located in a rather inconvenient place from restaurants and grocery centers, exhibitors and their families were quickly exhausted while traveling to take care of their cattle and themselves. It became evident that the kids may not be able to perform at their best because of the excessive traveling to and from the center, so the advisors presented an idea to their junior directors to modify the show schedule and host evening meals for the exhibitors and their families on site. “The idea was met with huge reception of the kids and their parents,” said Smart. With a warm, hearty meal filling everyone’s bellies and the opportunity for fellowship between adults and youth alike, the evening-meal time quickly became a staple at the show. Without the added time on the road,
the exhibitors and their parents were able to rest well, perform better and make more friends than ever before. The TJBBA takes great pride in the opportunities offered to their members during their state show. Cattle showmanship is a main focus for many of the exhibitors and the diligent planning that takes place prior to the contest, clearly fuels their competitive fires. Other events are available for members to compete in as well, without added pressure or time strain. This allows all participants to broaden their horizons and develop skills within and outside of the show ring, while encouraging strong peer kindness and acceptance. “Kids seem excited to show and excited to be there,” says Smart. “We as advisors are very cognizant of them treating one another well.” According to her, it is not uncommon to see many of the older members helping their younger counterparts and taking particular interest in the success of others alongside their own. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a boy or girl, big ones or little ones, everyone is helping each other.” Though the state show was an obvious success for the TJBBA, the junior directors and their advisors weren’t content with complacency, they wanted to do more in order to progress their organization in a
positive manner. What better way to accomplish that goal, than to open their arms to exhibitors everywhere? In March 2018 after the show in Houston, multiple breeders from other states approached the TJBBA board, inquiring as to the possibility of out-of-state youth exhibitors participating in the TJBBA state show. The junior directors put the request to a vote and ultimately decided “the more the merrier,” and set into motion the plans to allow Brangus participants from anywhere, to compete. Initially the motion to include others, only allowed other junior Brangus members to participate. But with only one out-of-state exhibitor appearing in June, they reworded their motion. Now anyone holding a Brangus membership, no matter where they hail from is invited to come and exhibit their cattle in June with an added invitation to participate in all other contests therein. “Come, show and enjoy this with us,” Smart said. “The only thing outof-state participants cannot take part in, is campaigning to be a TJBBA Queen, Sweetheart or advisor.” These positions may only be filled by Texas residents. In the future the TJBBA hopes to see more of their out-of-state friends take advantage of this opportunity. “We would love to see others come
to show cattle and network with these kids. You see them making lifelong friendships all over the place and not just in the cattle business, “Smart says. The common goal for the advisors and many exhibitor parents is for the youth to foster strong relationships that help them accomplish their goals and overcome any challenges they may face.” It’s safe to say, the future of the TJBBA is a bright one upon entering the new year. Through the dedication of its members, parents and advisors it will continue to grow and improve in a way that reflects positively on the Brangus breed. “We’re here for the kids and they are here for the love of Brangus cattle.” Congratulations to the TJBBA! Thank you for sharing your story with us and best wishes down the road! Maclaine Shults was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming and raised in the Rocky Mountain region of Northwestern Colorado. She grew up showing cattle and judging livestock around the United States. She went on to judge livestock at the collegiate level at Redlands Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma then Texas Tech University, where she was a member of the 2016 National Champion Team. She earned her bachelor’s degree in agricultural communications with a minor in animal science. IBBA CONNECTION // 2018: A YEAR IN REVIEW
2018: A Year in Review As 2018 comes to a close, we would like to briefly reflect on the events of the past year. As you may recall, IBBA was proud to host the 2018 World Brangus Congress in March. Guests from over 14 countries were invited to attend and experience a fun, educational trip in conjunction with the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. The IBBA Annual meeting and awards banquet also took place in March, also in Houston. Mr. Doyle Miller was elected as the new IBBA president this year and has since continued to help the association make positive progress, with the help of the Board of Directors. This year several areas opened up for election of Board members, with the ballots being sent out this fall and due by December 31st. Thank you to all those who chose to run, with intent on better serving the Brangus breed and all those involved. Many new technologies were implemented by many of our Brangus breeders this year, the results of which can be seen now and further into the new year. We are proud to have such open-minded, futuristic breeders who are willing to try new things in order to benefit the Brangus breed. 20
// DECEMBER 2018
It takes courage and perseverance to implement new tools and we are excited to witness the fruits of that labor for years to come. As many of you know, the office location was changed and upgraded for staff members two years ago. We hope if you haven’t already taken the opportunity to visit the new office in Adkins, Texas that you would soon! Dr. Perkins and staff invite everyone to stop in and see how the new location has positively affected the work and progress done for the association in-house. With many of our new staff joining the IBBA in the office this year, 2018 has been a big year of growth and learning. The team has made it a point to try and improve customer and member service and serve our association to the best of their abilities. The staff has set high goals for 2019 and with the help of the Board of Directors and members, is looking forward to an even better year to come. 2018 will also be known as the year of recovery. Many of our breeders and members were affected by the trauma of Hurricane Harvey. Though there may still be a long road ahead for many,
the examples of bravery, resilience, compassion and perseverance shown by all go unmatched. Please join us in continuing to pray for the wellness and recovery of those still experiencing backlash from this tragic event. Trials make us stronger and together, we can continue to lift one another up towards progress and healing. We are proud of all our associated producers who hosted sales this year and opened the doors for others to get involved with Brangus. It is no easy feat to put on or participate in these sales, what with traveling, animal selection and everything else that entails. We saw great growth in member numbers, as more people attended these sales, purchased high quality stock and joined in the Brangus family or continued to build their own herds. Congratulations are in order to all exhibitors who worked diligently this year and traveled around the country with their cattle. The time commitment, responsibility and dedication it takes to participate in these events should be commended and we all look forward to further success for everyone in 2019.

DATA REPORTING :: There is real value in thorough and accurate data reporting. The benefactors of the value reaped from complete data reporting are the breeder and the breed as a whole. The more we know, the more we know. When we have more information on registered animals, the genomic evaluations for animals are more credible because the analysis becomes more accurate, too. Thorough recordkeeping is key in successful herd management. For more information about data reporting, contact the International Brangus Breeders Association. We are happy to help you in person, through email (info@gobrangus.com), or over the phone (210-696-8231).

IBBA CONNECTION // ALL IN THE NUMBERS - 2018
All in the Numbers - 2018 by IBBA Executive Vice President Tommy Perkins, PhD., PAS
All in the Numbers
Tommy Perkins, Ph.D., PAS It is my privilege to report 2018 was another good year for the International BrangusÂŽ Breeders Association. In spite of hurricanes, floods, tornados, destructive and deadly wildfires along with some challenging cattle markets, the membership has continued to grow. Membership numbers have increased year over year since I was hired in October 2013. The increase in membership income from 2011 through 2018, without increasing membership fees, is shown in the table below. Note we still have a month left in 2018 so I expect this number to continue to rise.
Your commitment to this great breed is evidenced by an increase in Total Herd Improvement (THR) enrollments and transfers. The table below shows the nice increase in THR income from 2013 through 2017 without a per head increase for the inventory fee. The 2018 value only includes THR through the month of November so it will increase before the end of the year.

// DECEMBER 2018
// IBBA CONNECTION
The table shown below indicates the more sporadic transfer income from 2011 through 2018. The 2018 value will increase with the last few months of sale transfers hitting the books.
I would like to commend the entire membership for its buy-in of DNA technology. The chart below shows the drastic increase in DNA income from 2014 to the current date. This increase was driven by the discovery of the Developmental Duplication (DD) genetic conditions found in our cattle in 2014. However, the continued sharp increase in DNA use has occurred because of the release of genomic enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) in 2015.

IBBA CONNECTION // ALL IN THE NUMBERS - 2018
All of the increases in income have been accomplished with a reduction in salaries, legal fees and staff travel. Increases in DNA expenses has occurred as it is a near zero gain to the budget because we want to encourage more DNA technology uptake. You will also note a big increase in the advertising budget over time. The table below summarizes some expense items found in the budget from 2012 through 2017.

I would like to thank the staff for taking on more work load and being more efficient at their jobs. Their ‘customer service’ is second to none and their knowledge base is growing by the day. Please thank them the next time you talk to them or see them at a Brangus event. The Association’s other entities, Brangus Publications and Genetic Performance Solutions, continue to perform admirably. BPI continues to operate in the black with an improvement month over month in content and member information. GPS is in the process of releasing a new registry software which has created the need to hire additional programmers to complete the project. This has put a little financial strain on the bottom line, but the new product should bring in new clients sooner than later. The International Brangus Breeders Foundation didn’t have any fundraising events this year. However, they did fund some very important research investigating heat tolerance in Brangus cattle at the University of Florida. I am anxious to see some of the results as Dr. Raluca Mateescu continues to collect and analyze the data. In addition, the IBBA International Committee and staff coordinated and hosted the World Brangus Congress in 2018. It was a huge success with over 400 attendees from 14 countries. The US Brangus breeders financial support of the event was evident and greatly appreciated.

// IBBA CONNECTION
Lastly, the long-range planning subcommittee met prior to the IBBA Fall Conference in Tyler, Texas in late September 2018. Following is the summary of the committee’s findings in relation to the past five years under the plan. Progress on the current long-range plan from the past five years include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
IBBA has become a leader in use of DNA technology IBBA developed and released three new reproduction EPDs IBBA developed and released two new selection indices IBBA developed and released a breed specific commercial DNA product IBBA has seen more unification of the membership
A long discussion occurred about the need to continue improving on the “more united front mission and increasing the market share in the beef industry as outlined in the current long-range plan. It was also stated that the organization needs to do a better job of stressing the importance of good marketing plan for all members but more importantly to the newer members. It was suggested this would make a good article or series of articles for the Brangus Journal. The need to get more commercial cattlemen and cattlewomen using Brangus genetics was discussed at length. This included potential subsidy programs for these producers to entice their first use of the current Brangus genetics found in the marketplace. The need for collecting heifer breeding information as well as carcass data would be a big benefit from the commercial industry. The following areas of improvement were recommended for the next phase of the longrange plan: 1. Do a better job of promoting the strengths of Brangus, Red Brangus, Ultrablack and Ultrared cattle to the industry. The reproductive superiority of our cows, without sacrificing carcass excellence, should be stressed at a higher level in our promotion efforts. 2. Increase promotion of the Ultrablack and Ultrared programs to the more northern states of the US. There is a large cow base in Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Kentucky that has not been properly engaged and informed about this new program. 3. Evaluate options for getting our national cattle evaluation completed with EPDs that are more in line with other important breeds (e.g. Angus, SimAngus, etc.) in the industry. 4. Engage the commercial industry with new programs that will encourage data collection and submission to the association for heifer conception, carcass merit and others. 5. Place more emphasis on selection and culling criteria for sheath design (angle) and prepuce control. 6. Strengthen the relationship with all of the regional organizations to help grow and nurture potential new leadership for IBBA. The IBBA Board of Directors continue to make necessary decisions for the betterment of this great breed. Please show your continued interest by marking you ballot for the candidates running for the board. Thank you for your membership and continued use of IBBA services as it has continued to keep us in a strong financial position for the future.

BLESSED!
by Colten Leech, IJBBA SOC Sale Chairman
As the weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter, I have had plenty of time to sit and reflect upon all the good times and opportunities I have had over the past year as an IJBBA Director. I am extremely excited to be part of this amazing organization and have been blessed in many ways. When I take a minute to reflect back on the path I have been down, there are many events that come to mind. The first blessing that comes to mind, has to be all the traveling that I have been able to do. I would have to say that my favorite trip was when we all met in Cleveland, Ohio, for the Youth Beef Industry Congress. We were able to tour the Certified Angus Beef and Weaver Leather Headquarters while in Cleveland. A lot of great memories were made that weekend that will last a lifetime. I have had the pleasure to meet many new Brangus® breeders and farmers across the United States. I have enjoyed visiting with all of them, especially the “old timers.” I could sit and listen to their stories of how the Brangus breed and the beef industry in general has changed over the years. How they used to haul their cattle in train cars across the states and to county fairs. Once again, memories were made and I

was blessed beyond words from all that I came in contact with. Finally, the best memory that I have has to have been the planning, implementing and executing of the biggest show for our junior breeders, the National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS). The NJBS is the most amazing vacation that one can have, if you can call it a vacation. I never knew how much time and effort goes into making the week of NJBS a success. I never knew a persons feet could hurt so badly after only two days. Yes, your reading this correctly, it was only the second day! The greatest show wrapped up into one week of many challenges, experiences and friendships that will last a lifetime, and yes, being competitive too. We may all live miles apart; however, we come together for this one week to celebrate each other, make new friends and grow our Brangus family. Whatever you take away from being a part of the amazing Brangus family, walk each day with pride, talk as if it was your last chance to encourage others and above all else, always be willing to lend a hand and be kind. If you remember these few things then sooner or later good things will come your way. Being
only 17-years-old I am blessed beyond my years, from all of the great things and experiences that the Brangus breed and IJBBA Board of Directors has offered me. I am proud to say I’m a member of the greatest youth organization in the world. With that being said, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Brangus Family! ABOUT THE AUTHOR: The IJBBA Board of Directors has not had a director from the “Show-Me State” in several years, but Colten Leech ended that drought with his election to the board last year. Just a month out of being the youngest member of the new board, Leech is mature beyond his years and brings a level, thoughtful presence to the board. An IJBBA Board Member who was born into the Brangus breed, Leech has grown up attending the NJBS and credits the members of past IJBBA boards for being the reason he was compelled to apply for the IJBBA Board of Directors. Leech also has a background in youth rodeo, making the National Junior High Missouri Rodeo Team and in June of 2016 he was named a World Champion in Chute Dogging after competing against kids from Australia, Canada and the United States. Leech is excited and poised to lead a powerful committee of directors and advisors to new and exciting things for the “Source of Champions” Sale!

We are beyond grateful for the opportunity to work with so many amazing customers supporting the Brangus breed and are humbled by the recent success of SUHN'S MAJESTIK BEACON 30C at the GENETRUST at CRC sale this fall. Beacon was the second highest selling progeny group with 15 or more progeny to sell. He was second only to his, now deceased, sire Three D with 37 total head averaging $6,813.

IBBA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT > > It all began in 1983 when Don Cox set out to restore a family legacy and begin a new one with his own cattle herd. Cox bought his first land to begin breeding Red Brangus cattle. As a young man, Cox spent a lot of time on the family ranch with his grandparents. He knew from the beginning he would someday get back and become a rancher himself. He was intrigued more by the cattle than he was with farming and quickly discovered that picking cotton was not for him. The land was purchased from his maternal Aunt and Uncles who owned a portion of the original ranch that had been in his family for over 100 years. Surprisingly, the land had not been offered first to Cox or his mother who had grown up on the ranch. So, he began calling his Aunts and Uncles and asking them to give him the first opportunity to purchase the family land in the future. Thankfully, everyone agreed. That year he was able to purchase the first portion of the original ranch with the remainder of the land being leased until he could purchase it outright. He recently restored the 106-year-old home, where his mother

and her siblings were born. In 1995 he purchased an adjacent ranch from the Vornsand family and since, enjoys the ranch with his wife Lili. Thus began the legacy of Cox Excalibur Ranch, a name well known to many in the Brangus® industry. Cox had studied cattle from the first moment he fell in love with the animals and set out to find which kind would thrive in the hot, humid climates of his home. His research led him to establish his Red Brangus Herd in 1983, where he has now been a proud breeder for 35 years. The name alone was unique to the ranch and the story behind it proudly told. “We named the ranch ‘Excalibur’ because our goal was to always be on the cutting edge,” Cox said. “Excalibur was the name of King Arthurs sword. Staying sharp is vital to a sword.” Since 1988 he has sold semen and embryos to nine different countries. In the early 90’s Cox began using black Brangus genetics in order to introduce new blood lines to the herd. The first live cattle were exported in 1996, when cattle were shipped to Colombia. Cox Excalibur began building their Black Brangus herd alongside their
red counterparts developing strong enough genetics, that they are now able to offer both types of cattle for sale. Another unique trait of their program; cattle at Cox Excalibur are raised only on pasture. “Our pastures have no feeders in them,” Cox explained. “We have selected our cattle for many years that can grow on grass, produce a calf and be bred back for the next year.” Though EPD’s still play an important role in their cattle evaluations, the Cox crew pays attention to how well their cattle grow on grass to make sure they can hold up during production. Since its establishment, Cox Excalibur has made it a point to add new genetics, by breeding up from the top contenders in other breeds. Angus, Red Angus, Brangus and even a few first-generation cattle have been a part of their quest for the highest quality genetics. The program has been fortunate to have won many Grand Champion titles and many of their bulls are used by some of the top ranches around the world. “Our goal has always been to

produce top herd bulls and females,” Cox said. Another main goal for the owners has been to promote the Red Brangus breed around the world. In 1997, Cox met with Guillermo Zambrano from Monterey, Mexico and sold him his first Red Brangus cattle. Guillermo immediately started to develop and assemble the association in Mexico now known as Brangus Rojo de Mexico. Guillermo was required to receive the government’s approval. Once he did, they hit the ground running and now have over 140 breeders. Cox played a large role as one of the breeders who helped establish the association. He was awarded a Special Recognition Award for that service and his international promotion of the Red Brangus breed in April of this year. With their roots deeply tied into the Brangus breed, the Coxes have made it a point to be extremely involved in all facets of the industry. Cox was elected President of IBBA in 2010, after serving as chairman of numerous committees and as Treasurer/Secretary of the association. He also served on the Board of Directors for eight years. Cox served on the original World
40
Brangus Committee that started the Congress in 2000 in Houston, Texas. The formation of the World Brangus Congress was meant to move the Congress every 2 years to another country and help grow the Brangus breed internationally. Cox has impressively attended Houston, Buenos Ares, Argentina, San Paulo, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Australia, Merida, Mexico, and South Africa. He also was present for eight of the nine WBC with the exception of Australia. “The communication and interaction between Brangus breeders around the world, is vital to the growth of the breed,” he said. Promoting the Brangus breed has always been a priority of the Cox family. In 2006, Cox was honored with the Breeder of the Year Award. “I have been blessed with the best,” he said. Cox credits the success of his operation to his dedicated team that helps keep the ranch going. Jose Ramirez, his Ranch Manager, has been with him for 25 years. Several years ago, he added Antonio Rosales to the team. In 2016, Christina Alvarez joined them and in 2018, they hired Nathan Schulze. Kyle and Heidi Poppe were hired
many years ago to the show team which has proven to be a big success. Another CX team member is Federico Maisonnave from Uruguay who now lives in Paraguay. Federico joined Cox Excalibur about eight years ago and is the marketing/genetics representative in South America. “Cox Excalibur is like any good team,” said Cox. “We work together and strive to improve our cattle and genetics every year.” Cox Excalibur ranch is the home to several, on-site production sales; the CX Advantage Sale at the main ranch in Weimar, Texas, is held on the second Saturday of October every year. Another sale Cox has hosted and managed, is the Genetic Edge Sale held at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Both sales have sold and produced some of the top genetics in Red Brangus. “Keeping our genetics on the cutting edge and producing cattle that perform, grow on grass and make our customers money is always one of our major goals,” Cox said. “Our customers satisfaction is our ultimate goal.” Thank you for sharing your story with us and we wish Cox Excalibur all the best!

JUNIOR CONNECTION
JUNIOR MEMBER SPOTLIGHT > >
Kayden Mascheck
Kayden Wyatt Mascheck, a name known to many after appearing in a popular video that went viral on the internet earlier this summer. Hailing from Eagle Lake, Texas, this young man has made a serious impact both in the showring and beyond the show community in a short amount of time. Kayden began his Brangus® career at the age of 10 when he purchased his first Red Brangus heifer from Mr. Monte Williams. “We brought her home and I fell in love with her,” he said. “Now she’s just living the retirement life at home, being the boss of all the girls!” Since then, Kayden, a freshman at Rice Consolidated has been able to travel around the country exhibiting his cattle. His favorite part being able to see people from different parts of the United States and beyond, something many young people his age don’t have the opportunity to experience. “The adults are great,” Kayden said. “They’re always nice and willing to talk to me even though I’m much younger than they.” Of course, Kayden earned the respect of folks everywhere earlier this year with his extreme act of kindness. Kayden volunteered to help a fellow showman, Case Beken who was tragically diagnosed with a terminal 60
// DECEMBER 2018
brain tumor and could not exhibit his own steer at the Colorado County Fair. Kayden quickly stepped in and showed Case’s steer, Casper, in his place. Through diligent showmanship and skill, Kayden stuck his friends steer all the way to Grand Champion. The most amazing part, Case was able to witness the incredible event and the look on his face, they say was that of pure joy. Kayden was able to present the champion banner and buckle to his friend. The steer they called Casper, was sold for a record-setting $52k, with all funds going to establish a scholarship in Case’s memory. The inspiring event was captured on video and shared on the internet, where it quickly became one of the most praised and commended videos within the agriculture community and beyond. “It was just a special feeling, to be able to help Case out and be a part of it.” Kayden said. With a beautiful memory to cling to, Kayden continues to be blessed in the showring with his own cattle as well. He’s particularly proud of a heifer he raised, who has captured many titles in various bred and owned shows this year, including Grand Champion Bred and Owned female. “This past year has been really good to me,” he said. With his Red Brangus herd growing and bringing home more titles and accolades, he has a hard time letting them go.
JUNIOR CONNECTION
“The hardest part is having to retire some of my heifers to the pasture.” He said. “I’ve been fortunate to have some great animals and my dad and grandparents around to help me.” Though his showing career is far from over, Kayden already set big goals for his future. “I would love to attend college and study criminal justice with a minor in animal science or wildlife,” he said. The end goal for Kayden is to become a Game Warden. He also aspires to take his cattle into the international market and have his brand represented beyond the borders of home. For now though, he’s excitedly looking forward to running for an officer position within the International Junior Brangus Breeders Association in the near future. Currently Kayden is an ARBA officer and a member of the TJLA. Outside of the cattle industry, he loves playing football and tennis. Kayden also plans to continue showing his cattle wherever he is able, growing his herd and building new relationships with as many people as he can. With his kind heart, extreme work ethic and diligence, there is no doubt this young man will continue to do great things within and outside of the Brangus community. He also wanted to extend thanks to those who selected him to be featured as our Junior Spotlight member. Congratulations Kayden and good luck in the future!

Top Brangus awards at Char-No include 1996 IBBA Breeder of the Year and 2018 IBBA Pioneer of the Year. The Southeast Brangus Breeders appreciate their contributions to the Brangus world. Richard Sox from Dogwood Hill Farm, Lexington, South Carolina, received the Award of Excellence. Richard purchased his first Brangus heifer in 1997 for his daughter to show and now his grandson is showing progeny from that heifer. Richard has served several terms on the SBBA Board of Directors and manages shows in South Carolina. Another Award of Excellence went to Wayne Addison from Addison Brangus Farm, Winfield, Alabama. Wayne started his Brangus herd on his own farm in 2011 producing replacement heifers and functional bulls. A recent election to the SBBA Board of Directors will give him the opportunity to give back to the Brangus Breed. For only the second time in the history of the SBBA Award program, the Award of Excellence was presented to someone who does not breed Brangus cattle. John and Beth Willis, owners and operators of the Columbia Livestock Market in Lake City, Florida, received this prestigious award. The SBBA annual female sale has been at the Willis’ facility for the past seven years and they continually look out for the consignors. The Willis’ have hosted a Black Bull sale, predominantly Brangus, for the past 18 years thus promoting our breed in their part of Florida. This evolved into an annual Brangus commercial replacement sale, another promotion of our breed. As their nominating letter stated, “their welcoming hospitality is what warms our hearts and keeps us returning”. After the awards were all presented, the annual fun auction was held and added just over $4,000.00 to the association treasury.
