IBBA Connection A Busy and Bright Future
C
ompliments to the entire IBBA board of directors for completing another busy year with tough subjects to tackle. The board has governed with “the greater breed and association” at heart. President Vorel has done a good job of keeping everyone moving forward in a positive manner. I thank and appreciate all directors for taking additional time out of their busy schedules to serve on various committees. Their leadership and guidance is invaluable to the committee process. I would also like to thank the entire staff for “getting the job done” again. It is not always easy to please the membership. Staff members take their jobs seriously and want to abide by all of the rules and regulations of the association while still being cordial to the members. IBBA is now working on the fourth consecutive sire summary with genomic enhancement. This has all occurred because of the great support of the membership. Many of you have bought into the importance of the technology and have embraced its ability to improve accuracy of each EPD in the order of magnitude of an entire yearly calf crop of a young sire or a lifetime of production for a young female. Cut-off date for the February EPD run is set for January 10, 2016. If you haven’t already submitted DNA samples do so as soon as possible as the next deadline is just around the corner for the May 2016 EPD run. The finance committee was also busy completing the 2016 IBBA budget that was presented to the board for approval. After two straight years of increases in membership numbers and Total Herd Reporting income, the committee felt comfortable in increasing funds requested by the commercial marketing, advertising and international committees. The IBBA insurance premiums have increased about 15 percent for the upcoming year. All other expenses will be nearly the same value as in the last two budgets. All

in all, the finance committee has recommended a “near balanced” budget for the upcoming year. Congratulations to members of the international committee for hosting a very successful and productive meeting last month in Dallas. Although titled the International Field Day, it was really a discovery meeting to see how IBBA can increase its presence in the international Brangus markets. Representatives from Bolivia, Costa Rica, Mexico, South Africa and the United States attended the three-day meeting. Utilization of genomics, use of American genetics, DNA parent verification, the 2016 World Brangus Congress and a potential Global Genetic Evaluation between the U.S. and other foreign country Brangus associations were discussed along with an outstanding ranch visit. Thanks goes out to Danny Farris, Allen Goode, Marcos Borges and Buck Thomason for bringing cattle to the event. I am now starting my third year in the EVP position and this will be the first year that we will start it with all positions staffed for the upcoming year. Please see press releases in this journal announcing the new hires - Justin Beere and Jenny Bohac. Justin is working in the programming area with Emilio Silvas our product manager. Jenny will be handling some DNA work and will be evaluating potential new EPDs and selection indexes as a data services specialist. She just finished a M.S. degree in animal breeding under the guidance of Drs. Jim Sanders and David Riley at Texas A&M University. Look for information about the upcoming IBBA annual meeting and other events to be held March 2016 in Houston, Texas. Events will include the board meeting, EVP yearend review, annual membership meeting, awards banquet, bull show, female show and several commercial cattlemen events. Moisture continues to fall throughout the country with cattle prices tending to be a bit unstable going into 2016. It appears that the shortage of cows will continue due to many cattlemen retaining a larger number of replacement females. Cow numbers are still too low to produce the necessary number of feeder calves, replacement females or cull cows. Therefore, I still think a stronger than usual market lies ahead if we can continue to keep a strong consumer demand for our product. Do not hesitate to call me if you have any specific questions about DNA, genomic enhanced EPDs, data collection, etc. For information about IBBA programs or other inquiries, please call (210) 696-8231 or visit www.GoBrangus.com. IBBA Connection Happy New Year
I
t is hard to believe but 2015 is over and 2016 has begun. 2015 was a good year for the IBBA. We are up about 1,900 registrations, which equates to added income of about $40,000. We are also up about 100 new members. Growth for the past two consecutive years is very positive for the IBBA. Our IBBA board of directors, committees and staff has worked diligently to develop tools and promote tools for our membership to utilize. I truly hope our membership

As we go forward in 2016 let’s all do what we can to spread the word about our breed and provide information about the breed to the cattle industry as a whole. IBBA Connection Looking Ahead
W
by Tyler DEAN IBBA DIRECTOR OF SHOWS AND Youth PROGRAMS, Brangus Publications editor
ow! It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the holiday season. Thanksgiving has come and gone and as I write this, the countdown to Christmas has almost reached single digits! The new year and all that it will bring is already in sight and 2016 calendars are already filling up with plans. For those with show cattle, the spring show season is about to explode. IBBA Regional point shows start in just a couple weeks. Arizona National, Florida State Fair, Dixie National and the San Antonio Livestock Show all offer an opportunity for exhibitors to gain some points and move up in the race for IBBA’s coveted Show Animal of the Year Awards. Current standings can be found at gobrangus.com/show-animal-standings/ and will be updated with results as soon as official results are submitted to the IBBA by the respective fairs. Races will culminate at the last IBBA National Point Show for the 2015-2016 IBBA Show Season – the International Brangus Show in Houston, Texas. Additional open shows will be held around the nation including the return of the Open Brangus Show at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show. A lot of excitement is building as Brangus returns to Fort Worth to an expo so rich in ranching traditions. Junior exhibitors are also gearing up to hit the road as they begin their spring show season. From Florida to Oklahoma, junior expos and fairs will be in full force for the first few months of the new year. IBBA works to maintain a list of upcoming shows online at gobrangus.com/shows/ for exhibitors and breeders alike. I highly encourage you to check it out and participate in an upcoming event in your area. Should you have any additions to the list, send those my way and we will work to get them added so everyone knows about them! I mentioned Houston and the International Brangus Show,

but the most important aspect of Houston is the IBBA Annual Meetings. Committee meetings, board meetings, socials, association reports, awards banquet, shows and sales await all who attend. I highly encourage each and every member to attend – if not for the business side of things – at least for all the fun and fellowship that Houston entails! Houston also means a busy time for the hardworking group of junior leaders – the IJBBA Board of Directors. After a busy fall full of travel to shows and meetings and long hours making tough decisions, Houston will kick off the start of their spring travels. The Board will not only meet to keep working and planning future events, but will also be actively promoting their 2016 IJBBA Legacy Female and putting together the 2016 Legacy Female Buyer Group. I hope that everyone considers participating this year, not only for the great cause, but because of the female herself! Who wouldn’t love to have a female of her caliber roaming their pasture? She is certainly a top notch female and many thanks go to Diamond K Ranch and their continued support of the junior program. Immediately following Houston, the Board of Directors will be headed to Kansas City to participate in the 2016 Youth Beef Industry Congress. YBIC brings together the leaders from the numerous beef cattle breed associations to grow and develop leadership skills they can use as they move into leadership positions, not only with their adult associations, but also as they move into leadership positions in industry associations and the workforce. It’s hard to imagine but 2016 is here and off to a busy start! Calendars are full with events and activities and I highly encourage you to find a Brangus event to attend. Whichever one you pick, I promise you will enjoy your time of fun and fellowship with other Brangus enthusiasts. BJ

IJBBA Connection The Upcoming Year for IJBBA
I
by Kendra BRULL IjBBA DIRECTOR
t’s hard to believe that 2015 has already come to an end. 2016 is here and it is going to be an exciting year for the IJBBA. The time has already come for the IJBBA Board and IJBBA members to get ready for two major upcoming shows, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and the National Junior Brangus Show (NJBS). Brangus events at this year’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo start March 3 with the Board of Directors’ Meeting and run through the annual Genetic Edge Sale, the evening of March 5, 2016. This year on March 5 the 2016 IJBBA Legacy Female will be sold at the Genetic Edge XXI Sale. Donated to the IJBBA by former IJBBA member, Diamond K Ranch of Hempstead, Texas, the 2016 IJBBA Legacy Heifer is Diamond K’s Miss Legacy 915C4. Born January 29, 2015, Miss Legacy is sired by Doguet’s Hercules 88S3 and out of Miss JLS Grace 915Z. Diamond K never waivers to support the IJBBA as evidenced by volunteering to donate this heifer even though they donated the 2011 IJBBA Female. The proceeds from the sale of this female are used in numerous ways including to help offset travel expenses for the International Junior Brangus Breed Association Board of Directors as they travel to represent the breed, the IJBBA Legacy leadership
Conference and NJBS. Before we know it, July will be here which means it is time for NJBS. This year NJBS is headed to the Southeast Region and will be held in Hattiesburg, Miss., on July 17-23, 2016. The movement of the NJBS locations is an exciting change and helps spread the word about our association. Hopefully, we can draw a large contingent of juniors from across the Southeast and get them to join our great event for years to come. The IJBBA Board of Directors had our annual meeting in Hattiesburg, which gave us an opportunity to look at the facilities and develop some great ideas for our time at NJBS. Many changes were discussed and decided upon. If you missed those changes in the December issue of the Brangus Journal, look back to page 12 for Tyler’s discussion on them or visit IJBBA’s Facebook page to get caught up. With a Safari theme this year the IJBBA Board is very excited about the great things being planned for the 2016 NJBS. Board members, advisors and committees are all working hard, brainstorming ideas and working to make this year’s show the best ever. It is an exciting time to be part of the IJBBA, and I cannot wait to see you all in Houston and Hattiesburg! BJ

Marketing Update Plan for Success
I
hope everyone had a great time at Christmas, as well as a Happy New Year. We would like to welcome any new members to the IBBA and encourage them to be actively involved in as many events and functions as possible in the upcoming year. The goal of the International Brangus Breeders Association is to help you be as successful in the cattle business as possible. We encourage you to use the tools available to build a network with seasoned members as well as commercial producers. Fellow members are willing to help you along the way as well, and I encourage you to attend their sales and learn from their experiences. For all cattlemen across the country it is just another day at the office, and it’s a busy time of the year making sure that cattle maintain a proper nutritional plan during the winter. We finished out the 2015-year very strong, with bull sales averaging in the seven thousand range, some more and some less. I would consider that to be a great success, especially with the latest decline in beef prices. Variation also occurs between different geographic areas and that’s just the way the cookie crumbles, however, remote bidding technology is starting to help eliminate the distance and timing factors that prevent some buyers from being at sales. As always, the higher quality cattle maintained their value while others were slightly affected pricewise. My suggestion to this dilemma is to make sure that animals are in their best condition during sale time. If you are consigning to a sale involving multiple breeders, you should get with the sale manager to come up with a feeding plan to get your cattle in balance with other cattle in the sale. This is what made the major difference in the prices that I saw throughout the fall season. Cattle need to be at their peak when it comes sale time. That’s not to say that you are trying to cover it up, but simply that it is more appealing to a buyer to see the animal in the right condition. Most buyers would rather start with a fresh animal that is on the correct nutritional program, and be able to maintain that animal rather than spend the money to get one and have to build it up. The same principle applies to private treaty sales as well. Overall, it was an exciting time at each sale I attended. I am amazed at the level of enthusiasm Brangus breeders have when talking to customers about their product. The true key to ultimate success in the sale ring relates to the relationship you build with the customer outside of it. It is amazing to see breeders at their pens talking to customers and engaging them and educating them on the breed, the association, and great cattle. Hard work pays off and every sale seemed to pay off well this season. 20 | January 2016

As we move into the years ahead, predictions for beef production to increase are being made. Although the prices are expected to decline or level off, it is still a plus to know that consumers are expected to more willingly buy beef and more protein in general. This means that demand should remain steady and keep the supply in check. Providing this prediction holds up, it should be another great year in the cattle business. It is amazing to see how this association progresses. The members in the Brangus breed continue to integrate and incorporate the latest and most beneficial technologies of our time, and it shows in the cattle they produce. I know it’s stereotypical to talk about a resolution during this time of the year, but I can’t help it. I want to challenge you to not just make a goal or resolution that is unattainable, but to find something that you think will help improve your business plan and your operation. It may be that you want to get your name out there and develop some more brand recognition, or reduce cost while still maintaining maximum efficiency. You may want to incorporate the technologies of our time such as artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, or embryo transfer. These are a just a few of the practices that have been growing for sometime now, and many Brangus breeders are utilizing these practices to further their breeding programs. As you go forward in this year, whatever your goals are, use the various programs, publications and tools from the association to your advantage, and help us find ways to improve them along the way. Some friendly reminders as you kick off the new year are to make plans to attend the 2016 NCBA Cattle Industry Convention and Trade Show in San Diego, Calif. This is a prime opportunity to extend your network. The International Brangus Breeders Association as well as a few sponsoring members will be there with a great booth to excite and inform people about our breed and how it can benefit the industry. It will be a great time for you to attend demonstrations and seminars to increase your knowledge and skills as well. Shortly after NCBA, the IBBA will be in Houston at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where we will host the IBBA Annual Meeting. This is yet another great time to gather with Brangus breeders and voice your ideas and opinions that make this association function. Lastly, get out and attend your fellow members’ events this year. Go support them at their sales, and you might be surprised how they can return the favor. It is a great network to be a part of and I encourage you to join in if you haven’t already. I look forward to a great year ahead and can’t wait to see you somewhere in 2016! BJ

Special guests and featured speakers included Dr. Elisa Marques, Market Development Manager at GeneSeek (a Neogen Company) and Jill Ginn, Texas Territory Manager at GeneSeek. Marques discussed the basics of beef cattle genomics, parentage validation using DNA and genomic enhanced EPD applications. She stressed the importance of proper sampling, priority for use of blood cards and the use of the USDA plus Indicus SNP marker panel for parentage validation. Perkins introduced the attendees to the different methodologies currently being used to calculate genomic enhanced EPDs in sire summaries across various breeds of cattle in the U.S. He described the “single step method utilized by IBBA for their DNA incorporated EDPs. He concluded with genetic condition testing in the U.S. and globally for Brangus genetics. Day two included a drive to Indian Hills Ranch in Cranfills Gap, Texas, for a live cattle tour of Brangus, Red Brangus and Ultrablack cattle. The visit included mature breeding bulls and ET donor dams from Farris Ranching Company, OB Ranches, Trio Cattle Company and Indian Hills Ranch. Danny Farris, Farris Ranch Company, discussed both Brangus and Ultrablack cattle he had on display; Marcos Borges, OB Ranch, discussed Red Brangus cattle on display from OB Ranches as well as Trio Cattle Company; and Buck Thomason highlighted Brangus cattle at Indian Hills Ranch. Sidney Thomason was responsible for an outstanding noon meal of barbeque and all of the fixings.
Feature Article Day three included a great discussion on a uniform data collection format necessary for a global genetic evaluation. Although different management strategies encompass beef production in each country, it was agreed that a common date range for weaning, ultrasound, etc., could be agreed upon for future data analysis. Patrick Simmons, CEO for Genetic Leaders International, highlighted the basics of frozen genetics exportation from the U.S. to other countries and the limitations that exist. Simmons presented information on the importance of a positive working relationship with the USDA, the veterinarian and/or export agent involved in completing the genetics export. The event concluded with a presentation by the South African delegation on the upcoming World Brangus Congress. Johan Blomerus, South Africa Brangus Society Past Vice President, and Sparks showed two different video clips promoting the fun and educational event scheduled for May 2016. The World Congress will include pre-conference tours in the Johannesburg area, postconference tours in the Cape Town area and the opportunity for ranch visits and hunting excursions while in South Africa. Beef Provides a Healthy Start to 2016
by Shalene McNeill, Ph.D. REgistered dietitian and ncba executive director of human nutrition
A
s we start a new year, it’s a great time to evaluate the past year and set goals and challenges for what lies ahead. For many Americans, that will include eating healthier or shedding a few pounds. Many will search the internet, poll friends and family, review the latest diet books and will ultimately land on a ‘plan’. Even if advice comes from a physician or dietitian, oftentimes a new diet isn’t easy to stick to because it’s vastly different from the typical way of eating, and involves sacrificing favorite foods. Ultimately, you end up feeling deprived. Frustrated, many will throw in the towel. But there’s a much easier, more successful way that is backed by strong science. It’s delicious too. It starts with including more protein-rich foods in your eating plan. As one of America’s favorite proteins, beef can help build a more nutrient-rich, better tasting meal that satisfies your appetite and improves health. Calorie for calorie, lean beef is one of the most nutrient-rich foods, providing 10 essential nutrients including protein, zinc and B vitamins and less than 10 grams of fat per 3 ounce serving. In fact, it often takes more than twice the calories to get the same amount of protein from plantbased proteins like soy, quinoa, nuts and seeds. Over the last decade or so, there has been a convincing amount of research that has shown even moderate increases in protein – from foods like beef – can support weight management by boosting metabolism, controlling appetite and helping the body retain muscle while losing fat. Beef can help fuel your workouts, too. Combining adequate high-quality protein with regular activity, like strength training, can help slow or prevent the loss of muscle that comes with aging. Current research suggests that 30 grams of protein – the amount in about 3.5 ounces of beef – is a great meal target for optimizing protein. Don’t forget, beef is great for breakfast, too. One of my all-time favorite breakfasts is Beefy Sweet Potato Hash. You can find this easy, tasty recipe at www.BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com. If you’re watching your cholesterol or blood pressure, there is some really great news for beef fans. The recent BOLD study – Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet - showed that including even 4 to 5.5 ounces of lean beef daily could reduce your heart disease risk by 10 to 20 percent by improving your LDL (bad) cholesterol and blood pressure. With today’s leaner beef supply, it is easy to find flavorful cuts of lean beef to incorporate into your heart healthy diet. 26 | January 2016
Brangus Journal
Today, more than 67 percent of all beef muscle cuts are lean. This has been accomplished primarily by trimming external fat rather than reducing marbling in beef cuts. This means we can enjoy tender, juicy, flavorful cuts of beef that have less fat than they did 30 years ago. Many popular cuts like Tenderloin and Strip Steak, and 93% lean or leaner Ground Beef meet government guidelines for lean. And, a surprising fact about beef is that half of beef ’s fat is monounsaturated fat – the same heart healthy kinds of fat found in olive oil and avocados. In fact, beef contributes less than 10 percent of saturated fat and total fat in the diet and less cholesterol compared to chicken and eggs. One great way to include more lean protein, like beef, into your diet is the Protein Challenge, developed by the Beef Checkoff. The Protein Challenge is a 30-day challenge to include the optimal amount of protein through the day. Consuming 25 to 30 grams of protein at each meal helps you feel full and provides great benefits. The Protein Challenge is an easy to use tool to help keep you on track for these goals and ensure you’re getting enough lean beef. You can find out more about the Protein Challenge, recipes and other great ways to include beef in your diet at www. BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com. BJ ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Shalene H. Agriculture Relies on Access to
Credit F
amily farms and ranches like mine share many of the same characteristics of any small business. Like most small businesses, the amount of capital we are required to manage is mind-boggling. The costs of production have soared, as have the costs of equipment and facilities to manage and care for our cattle. Feed costs, grass and crop seedlings, fencing, equipment, maintenance and labor costs all add up significantly – not to mention the cost of purchasing cattle. These are the reasons why agriculture heavily relies on access to capital. Since 1953 the Small Business Administration has provided many small businesses with access to the capital needed to start and grow a business. Unlike other industries, Congress set the size standard for agricultural small businesses at the statutory level of $500,000 in 1985, which was increased to $750,000 in 2000. This level no longer reflects the financial situation for a ‘small’ farm like mine, nor does it give young and beginning farmers the access to credit they need to get a start. Land and cattle prices quickly exceed this statutory limit and it is time for Congress to allow the Small Business Administration to establish these size standards for agriculture based on the same process as other small businesses. Today’s agriculture industry primarily consists of an educated workforce that wants to engage in agriculture. Even still, the average age of farmers continues to rise, and we face a growing trend of urbanization that continues to draw the next generation away from the farm. Due to enormous startup and operational costs, it remains very difficult for new people to enter agriculture. Even though the USDA offers programs to assist young and new farmers, many times those loans are not great enough to cover the necessary costs. The Small Agricultural Producer Size and Standards Improvement Act (H.R. 3714) introduced by Rep. Mike Bost (R-Ill.) would amend the Small Business Act to allow the Small Business Administration to set the limits for agriculture in line with non-ag small businesses. This legislation would give current and future agricultural operators another choice for access to credit and support rural America. BBA welcomed Justin Beere this past November as the Full Stack Engineer. He will be working at the office headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. Beere brings a wealth of technical expertise and will be working with our Product Manager on new technology solutions at IBBA. “Justin comes to IBBA as a recent graduate of Codeup’s full-stack web development bootcamp,” said IBBA Executive Vice President Dr. Tommy Perkins. “Justin is a creative web developer that is trained in JavaScript, PHP, AngularJS, MySQL, Web Design and many other programs. I am looking
forward to seeing the next version of the IBBA registry program with his input.” Codeup is a technical college that specializes in and teaches practical real-world development skills. Beere focused his training at Codeup to learn how to combine problem-solving skills with his love for technology. “I am a very analytical person and look at problems very differently than most people. Technology lets me think about hard problems and give back solutions in a meaningful way,” said Beere. “I am blessed to work with such an amazing team of individuals here at IBBA, and I look forward to what we will accomplish in the upcoming year.” Beere can be contacted directly by email at jbeere@gobrangus. com or in the office at 210-696- 8231. Bohac Joins Brangus Team as Education and Data Coordinator
T
he newest addition to the IBBA Team, Jenny Bohac will be joining the IBBA staff in early January as the Education and Data Coordinator at the office headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. Bohac comes to the IBBA from Texas A&M University where she recently received her master’s degree in animal breeding. Bohac also received her bachelor’s degree in animal science from Texas A&M in 2013. Her thesis focused on maternal reproductive traits in first and second generation Brahman-Angus crosses, which will be an asset to the IBBA. “Through school I got involved in calf and pregnant mare research projects, with these experiences it showed me my love for the agriculture industry and research,” Bohac said. “I love the cattle industry and all it encompasses and am eager to work for the IBBA.” Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Bohac was one generation removed from agriculture. Her father grew up on a farm raising livestock but location prevented her from raising livestock of her own. With agricultural roots Bohac has always had a passion for agriculture and the industry and knew she
wanted to study livestock in school. “Jenny is a very talented young lady that excelled in her recent graduate research program at Texas A&M in animal breeding,” said IBBA Executive Vice President Dr. Tommy Perkins. “She will be a valuable addition to the staff because of her genetic and database knowledge. Jenny will be essential in improving the IBBA sire summary as she mines the current database for analysis of contemporary grouping, new EPDs and potential selection indexes.” Bohac’s professional agricultural experience is diverse. She has been involved in the Saddle and Sirloin Club at Texas A&M University and was a member of the Academic Quadrathalon. She has been a teaching assistant for many animal science courses including animal breeding and introduction to animal science. This past year Bohac was a Grad Camp Counselor and has served as a member of Aggie Reps. Bohac can be contacted directly by email at jbohac@gobrangus. com or in the office at 210-696- 8231. Membership IBBA Membership to Include Trademark License
by John M. HENDERSON HENDERSON LAW FIRM, LLC
A
s previously announced in this journal’s prior edition, IBBA re-acquired the trademark registration for BRANGUS®. IBBA now controls the use of the mark and benefits from the values afforded by a registered trademark. IBBA has decided to offer members the benefit to use the trademark on or for the identity of their cattle registered with IBBA in consideration for their valued membership. IBBA’s ownership of BRANGUS® trademark entitles IBBA to ownership and control over the mark, including the authority to issue licenses for a right to use the BRANGUS® mark. As a result of this control, IBBA will offer those with a valid current IBBA membership a royalty-free, nonexclusive right to use the BRANGUS® mark by accepting and adhering to a licensing agreement. The current license agreement will be posted on the IBBA website. Members as licensees ensure the BRANGUS® mark signifies a uniform quality and nature of the product.
Membership and Licensing Agreement
Obtaining a license will be predicated upon one signing up for a new membership or renewing a current membership with IBBA. A license obtained through this process will become immediately effective upon membership. The license to use the trademark carries a one year term so long as the membership does not become invalid during that year. Members will be able extend the BRANGUS® mark license for another year, so long as yearly renewal of an IBBA membership is completed. If the membership is ever ineffective the right to use the mark under the licensing agreement will be terminated. Please note that membership renewals have already been sent out and returned for 2016. Therefore, current members can obtain a license through an online process when logging into the IBBA portal. This will include an opportunity to accept the Licensing Agreement for use of the BRANGUS® mark. Failure to accept the License Agreement will result in the inability of you, as a member of IBBA, from using the BRANGUS® in any written publication, magazine, letter, or advertisement. The license to use this mark is a privilege of being an IBBA member and we hope that you will take advantage of this privilege. 32 | January 2016
Brangus Journal
Extent of Licensing Agreement
This one year license allows an IBBA member the right to use the BRANGUS® mark, as well as a right to use BRINKS BRANGUS® mark. These trademarks are to be used on or in connection with the cattle for the purposes of identifying cattle as IBBA registered BRANGUS® in any publication, advertisement or other written material distributed to the public. For a member to properly use the trademark, they must comply with the specifications required by the trademark registration. For those licensees who will use the BRANGUS® mark, they must indicate the cattle source in conjunction with the mark. A ranch identifying source is sufficient to identify the source of the cattle if it is at least one word, such as LLL Ranch, and is placed before or following the BRANGUS® mark, LLL Ranch BRANGUS®. A mark solely labeled as BRANGUS® is not an allowed use by the licensee. IBBA has worked hard for its members to obtain the registered trademark and is glad to share a right to use the trademark with its loyal members. I know that this process seems complicated and onerous, especially when you first hear about it. However, this license and the enforcement of the license and the prohibition of the unauthorized use of our mark, are all required in order for us to protect, keep and maintain the benefit and asset that we have recovered by obtaining the registration of our trademark BRANGUS®. BJ ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Growing up raising cattle in Odessa, Texas, John participated in agriculture through 4-H. He graduated from Odessa Permian High School in 1987. preceding the GE-EPD release. The IBBA highly recommends that you submit your DNA samples well in advance of the data deadline as it takes about 30 days to get the results once a sample is received in the genomics company lab. DNA submitted in a timely fashion (with results being received prior to the data entry deadline) will be included in the given genomic analysis. For more information or if you have any questions, please contact the IBBA office at 210-696-8231 or info@int-brangus.org. BJ

THE POWER OF A PROGRAM
BEGINS AND ENDS WITH QUALITY ASSURANCE. Highest Standards Guaranteed “Every year I’ve come to your sales, the bulls just keep getting better and better.” Comments from repeat Town Creek Farm bull customer. Town Creek Farm continues to raise its bar and demands of proving our program and genetics through quality assurance. ✔ Cow Herd Testing. At weaning all Town Creek Farm dams and cows
owned by our bull production partners are tested for Johnes disease using both fecal and blood samples. This is far superior to testing virgin bulls in that Johnes will not exhibit clinical signs until an animal is three years and older. All cows with positive tests means that both cow and calf are immediately culled.
✔ Fertility. We are committed to proving genetics that are functional and fertile. Heifers must calve as two-year olds. All open and unproductive females are culled from herd.
✔ Bulls developed on high roughage, forage-based, low energy ration to ensure longevity and reliable travel.
✔ Efficiency bull testing with Grow-Safe System. Identifying animals that have lower maintenance requirements can have a dramatic effect on reducing feed and forage inputs.
✔ User-friendly, high maternal, low birth weight bulls to produce valuable heifers. Profit begins with a live calf.
✔ Slick haired, heat and humidity tolerant bulls. Look for us with the IBBA booth at the 2016 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show on January 27-29 in San Diego, California.
Quality Assurance always comes first. Total Commitment
