CHAMBER MATTERS 2017

Chamber steps up Frankfort presence to represent members’ interest S

ince the beginning of the 2017 General Assembly session, Chamber staff, board members and many Chamber volunteers have made several trips to the Capitol to increase Owensboro’s presence and voice. Chamber Young Professionals and Leadership Owensboro both made separate trips. Chamber Board Members, community leaders such as Mayor Tom Watson and Owensboro Community and Technical College president Dr. Scott Williams and the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corporation staff have also participated in the trips. Sen. Joe Bowen, Rep. Suzanne Miles, Rep. Matt Castlen, Rep. D.J. Johnson, Rep. Jim Gooch and Rep. Robby Mills all made time to discuss the process and various pieces of legislation that are of interest to the Chamber. “Being seen and around the process is important for Owensboro. In order to be fully

engaged, it is important to be present,” Candance Castlen Brake, Chamber president and CEO said. The Leadership Owensboro Class had lunch with Leadership Paducah and Leadership Murray. Gov. Matt Bevin addressed the crowd. “The governor’s speech was definitely a highlight of our trip,” said Wade Jenkins, board chair. “And seeing how our legislative delegation made time for us with their busy schedule was so impressive.”

It will be convened by Mark Martin of Atmos Energy, 2015 Chamber board chair and current advocacy chair. Legislative updates are free and open to the public. CHAMBER MATTERS

The story of Wendell Foster I

n 1937, Edith and Wendell Foster’s infant daughter, Louise, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities. Because of Louise, the Fosters committed their lives and opened their home to support children with developmental disabilities. Drafted in World War II, Wendell Foster served as a cook in a military hospital. He used the opportunity to learn from the medical staff who were engaged in the rehabilitation of physically disabled soldiers. Following the war, Mr. Foster approached his fellow veterans in Daviess County to help fund a home and school for children with disabilities.

At that time, services such as special education were not available. In response to this lack of services, the Fosters provided residential services to the children of seven local families. They also offered their home as a meeting place

for families while their children received physical and occupational therapy in the Foster’s backyard and day services in their dining room. In 1947, a volunteer board of directors incorporated the agency, adopted a charter and by-laws, and

officially founded the organization now known as Wendell Foster, named in honor of its founder. Wendell Foster is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation currently governed by a 22-member board of directors. Now in its seventieth year of operation, Wendell Foster has evolved into a community based organization providing services on-site, in people’s homes, in some of the area school systems, and in community settings. Our guiding mission is to provide individualized supports and services, empowering people with disabilities to realize their dreams and potential.

Opportunity for businesses with finance openings A

re you looking for employees in the business or finance portion of your operation? The Greater Owensboro chapter of FAME has you covered. GO FAME is hosting a GO CAREERS Employer Recruitment event at 7:30 a.m. Friday in the third floor conference room of the Commerce Center located at 200 East Third St., in Owensboro. Prospective employers are invited to attend to learn more about the GO CAREERS accelerated work and learn format that leads to a Business Administration Systems degree. GO CAREERS is a company-sponsored partnership of regional employers who share the goal of creating a pipeline of highly-skilled workers with a comprehensive understanding of the operational, organizational and managerial responsibilities of an organization. A major advantage of the GO CAREERS program is its accelerated degree path where students work three days per week at their

sponsoring company and attend industry-validated, college courses two days per week. Sponsoring employers can participate in every aspect of the program, from curriculum design to reinforcing classroom instruction in the work setting. Industry representatives from the GO FAME chapter will be on hand at the March 3 employer recruitment event to discuss the benefits of program participation. Sponsoring employers can grow their own team of professionals who understand not only a unique job function or process, but also the organization’s overall culture and business practices. GO FAME was the first chapter in Kentucky to launch GO CAREERS, the first non-manufacturing program option that utilizes the successful work and learn model to train the next generation of workers. While GO CAREERS is relevant for the healthcare, business, and financial industries, it is also applicable to any industry

seeking employees proficient in business skills. At the completion of the 18-month program, the GO CAREERS students will graduate with an associate degree. Since students earn wages for time spent on their job and sponsoring companies assist with tuition costs, this degree option is earned with little or no college debt. U.S. Bank became the premiere employer member of GO CAREERS and the first US Bank cohort of students started coursework at OCTC in August 2016. The second cohort for GO CAREERS will begin in August and is open to all employers interesting in sponsoring current or future employees for training in business administration. For further information about the program or the GO CAREERS Employer Recruitment event on Friday, please contact GO FAME Coordinator Katie Vincent at katie.vincent@kctcs.edu or call 270-686-4423.
