CHAMBER MATTERS 2018

COMMUNICATIONS Communications play a vital role in advancing our Membership. Our website, social media and our quality publications provide our Members countless opportunities to connect with potential and existing customers. EVENTS Events are at the center of creating opportunities for our Members to connect with one another. They provide opportunities to network, to develop new clients and customers, and to learn about issues impacting our community’s bottom line.

Talent development, recruitment and retention are key to our economic growth. The Chamber has focused efforts on nurturing existing talent programs, developing new ways to connect current and future leaders and participating in solutions to workforce issues.

Since our inception in 1913, many of the region’s most important ideas and programs have originated at The Chamber. Our collaboration with representatives across the community landscape is key in our regional economic growth, our legislative successes and in creating a buzz about Owensboro across the state.

We take our role as advocate for our Members very seriously. Whether it be at the Local, State or Federal level, our Chamber looks out for individual Members and for the community at large. Along with a professional lobbyist, our Chamber ensures that we are in the mix so that Owensboro is heard. 100% of our revenue comes from dues and events – giving us independence to take tough positions.

The Annual Chamber Golf Classic will be Friday, August 31 at The Pearl Club at The Summit. Teams and sponsorship opportunities will be available starting Thursday, June 7. Please call the Chamber at (270)926-1860 for more information.

Our board and staff are committed to a continuous improvement philosophy — always building on successes and working through obstacles. Like a small business, we operate with a lean staff. There have been no dues increases in at least a decade. Yet our programming output continue to grow.

We encourage Chamber Members to join together with the community to assist the Help Office by re-stocking items desperately needed for summer. Donations will be accepted at Rooster Booster this Thursday, June 7 in the Convention Center lobby. Please call the Chamber for more information (270)926-1860 or email: chamber@owensboro.com

INNOVATION, COMMUNITY, TRANSFORMATION

A new tradition of excellence

I

n 2017, Western Kentucky University welcomed Timothy C. Caboni, Ph.D., as its 10th president. President Caboni is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and received a bachelor’s degree in speech communication and rhetoric from Louisiana State University. He later earned a master’s degree in corporate and organizational communication from WKU and received his Ph.D. in higher education leadership and policy from Vanderbilt University. A leader in strategic planning, President Caboni spent his first nine months as president working with the WKU community to develop a strategic plan for the University’s next decade of growth. Part of this plan will be to ensure that WKU continues to provide unparalleled academic opportunities and workforce development that meet the needs of the Owensboro region. Western Kentucky University first served the Owensboro community locally in 1969, offering mainly graduate courses. Today, WKU offers a wide variety of

flexible, quality, and convenient academic and workforce development programs. Under President Caboni’s leadership, WKU is expanding educational opportunities at the WKU Owensboro campus to fit the demands of both transfer students and adult learners. These opportunities include in-person, online, and hybrid course delivery formats, which expand access at all WKU campuses. WKU will bring additional customized workforce training to meet the market demand for highly-qualified employees. Staff at the WKU Owensboro campus will continue to provide outstanding student support including academic and transfer advising, financial aid counseling, tutoring and writing assistance, military student services and testing center and computer lab access. WKU continues to serve the citizens of Owensboro and surrounding communities and looks forward to building an even stronger tradition of excellence.
