Our Investors Luncheon gives the Chamber Board Chair and staff a chance to meet with Chamber businesses to receive feedback, ideas and concerns from our members. We want to know what our members biggest obstacles are, if there are areas of advocacy we can help with and what we can do to continue to build a strong business environment and community. We also discuss our Chamber’s mission, how we accomplish it and why that is important to each business. As a member-based organization, we take our direction and craft our plan of work from your feedback!

Happy Labor Day! A heartfelt thanks to all of the working people who make Greater Owensboro the community we call home!

A group of Chamber Young Professionals recently received final approval for a mural project in our downtown. The mural was designed by CYP member and Daviess County High School Art Teacher Austin Casebolt. Austin and a group of CYP volunteers hope to have the mural completed in the next few weeks. They have already spent nights and weekends preparing. The drivers of this CYP project are mostly in their 20s and the majority moved to Owensboro as adults. This group met with Judge -- Executive Al Mattingly for assistance which the Fiscal Court willingly provided. They also presented the project to the Convention and Visitors Bureau Board, which gave approval for the space on the side of their building. Both the Fiscal Court and the CVB Board were open and encouraging. This project, though it may seem small in scope, is a big deal. It is a perfect example of why people are moving to Owensboro, why we were rated in the top U.S. cities for millennials. We are a small city that offers quality of life. Jessica Kirk, who is helping head a community development committee for the Chamber’s Young Professionals brand, credited the idea behind a mural to excitement among the city’s young adults who want to help turn downtown Owensboro into a place as active and thriving as larger downtown metros in the region. "We want it to be a place for people to come, gather and take photos," she said. "We want visitors and residents alike to take part, and spread it across social media. It's going to have a perfect spot right under the blue bridge on the Visit Owensboro building."

CHAMBER MATTERS

Gary S. Cox to speak at September Rooster Booster B

rescia University will sponsor Rooster Booster this Thursday, September 6 at 7:30 am at the Owensboro Convention Center. Reservations for Rooster Booster can be made online at chamber. owensboro.com or by calling the Chamber office (270)926-1860. The breakfast will feature guest speaker, Gary Cox. Gary S. Cox, Ph.D. was named president of the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities in November 1997 after a distinguished career in Kentucky public service. Cox worked for the Legislative Research Commission before

spending two decades with the Kentucky Council on Higher Education, the last ten as executive director. In that role he led the Council’s aggressive participation in the development of Kentucky’s landmark higher education reform act, 1997’s House Bill 1. As president of AIKCU, Cox serves as CEO for the statewide member association of eighteen regionally accredited, private nonprofit Kentucky colleges and universities. AIKCU represents its members with policymakers at the state and national levels; fosters information sharing, networking, and collaboration; raises private

funds in support of student scholarships and collaborative ventures; develops cost-saving partnerships with business and other external organizations; and advocates on behalf of the nonprofit college community and their students. Cox holds a bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky, all in political science, and honorary doctorates from Morehead State University and Campbellsville University. Cox and his wife Linda live in Lawrenceburg and have a blended family of four daughters, nine grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Brescia celebrates being the Bearcats for 50 years In 1968, then-Brescia College was an 18-year-old four-year, liberal arts college in downtown Owensboro. Remaining rooted in 1925 when the Mount Saint Joseph College for Women first started offering high education courses, Brescia students of the modern era wanted more. They needed an identity, something to call their own, something to bring spirit to downtown – they needed a mascot and thus were born the “Brescia Bearcats!” Barney the Bearcat has led Brescia for 50 years. Today, much like 1968, Brescia remains connected to its Ursuline roots while embracing the future. Brescia recently welcomed the largest first time, full time freshman class in history. The campus is vibrant with student life, athletics, and academic opportunities. The Moore Center is complete, and the C.E. Field Center for Professional Studies is going up. These projects will address enrollment growth, meet the needs of modern day learners, and give a new face to Brescia and a new landmark entrance to downtown Owensboro. As the longest-standing provider of higher education in Daviess County, Brescia University is firmly rooted in its student-centered mission to provide transforming educational opportunities to those who might otherwise have none.
