James R. Comer, Agriculture Commissioner, speaking at March 1st Rooster Booster Monroe County native, James Comer, was a Kentucky State Representative for over 10 years representing the counties of Green, Metcalfe, Cumberland and Monroe. James is a lifelong farmer and is the founder and owner of James Comer, Jr. Farms, a 950-acre beef cattle, timber and hay farming operation. He is a graduate of Western Kentucky University with a

degree in Agriculture and was the Kentucky FFA State President (1990-1991).

In addition to a successful farming operation, James has experience in two other start-up businesses. He formed Comer & Polston Insurance, Inc. and CFB Foods, Inc. Comer’s experience in three different diversified businesses led to his political path in Frankfort, and

his being widely considered as one of the most conservative, pro-business legislators in Kentucky. As a result of his strong conservative and business friendly stance on the issues, James received numerous awards including the 2002 National Freshman Republican Legislator of the Year Award, the 2003 Jaycees Outstanding Young Kentuckian, the 2004 National Federation of Independent Business’ Guardian of Small Business Award, and the 2009 Western Kentucky

University Alumnus of the Year. His most recent accomplishment was being elected Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture by an overwhelming margin in November of last year. He is married to Tamara Jo (T.J.); and they have three children, Reagan, Harlan and Aniston.

Commissioner Comer will speak on the importance of agriculture to Kentucky’s economy and where he sees in the Commonwealth’s future regarding the agriculture industry.

The Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport Authority (OWB) is governed by a 10-member Board appointed

by Daviess County Fiscal Court and the Owensboro City Commission. OWB’s amenities include 8,000 ft. and 5,000 ft. runways, a control tower staffed 365 days per year, and 178 acres of available land for development. Three fixed based operators provide fuel, maintenance and hanger services for the aviation community and 56 aircraft call OWB home.

With OWB’s newly constructed, reinforced 8,000 ft. runway and the newly constructed Kentucky National Guard Armory located on Airport property, OWB is recognized as the primary Readiness Center for Western Kentucky in case of a major disaster such as an earthquake.

Nearly 400 Chamber members attended the event. Motivational Comedian Charles Marshall was on hand to provide entertainment and valuable information on how to make sure your customer service is up to par. Local band Straight Laced entertained during

the reception and did a fantastic job!

The event included the ceremonial passing of the gavel from 2011 Chair Shirley Cecil to 2012 Chair Michael F. Beckwith. Suzanne Northern Blazar was honored as Director of the Year for 2011 and Cheri Middleton of Cheri’s Creations was named Member of the Year.

The Chamber is now accepting nominations for its Annual Small Business and Entrepreneur of the Year awards to be named at the June 6th Rooster Booster Breakfast.

Each year the Chamber of Commerce honors the achievements of local small businesses and entrepreneurs that have demonstrated the ability to withstand the cyclical nature of business, overcome adversity, seize oppor tunities and succeed. The Chamber seeks to highlight and share the success stories of these businesspersons that have successfully managed resources, committed to excel-

lence and emerged strong. Three awards are given: Small Business of the Year (1-10 employees), Small Business of the Year (11+ employees) and Entrepreneur of the Year.

Any member of the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce may nominate a candidate for these awards. A Chamber member may nominate his/her own business. Nominated businesses must be a member of the Chamber. Nominees will be asked to complete an information form and will be honored at the June 6th “Owensboro Has It!” expo preview.
