CHAMBER MATTERS

Do you have a healthcare strategy for your workforce? As healthcare costs have continued to rise, employers have sought any and all options for relief with varying degrees of success. Numerous challenges abound for employers. We all recognize the value to both employer and employee when a workforce is healthier. Employees are more productive, have less workers compensation claims, generally have higher morale and invariably have less medical claim costs. “You have to spend money to make money.” In the case of workplace wellness, it’s absolutely true. Multiple economic and healthcare studies show that for every $1 spent on workplace wellness and population health, the return on investment is anywhere from $2 - $6. The return is dependent on your commitment to wellness and how well you engage your employees. Workplace wellness isn’t the only mechanism

for cost containment. Many employers are looking at the bigger picture of their workforce not only today, but long term. Consequently, they are recognizing the role they play in the management of the health of their population. Employers are focusing on the so-called “lifestyle diseases” identified in the Community Health Needs Assessment of obesity, access to care, and substance abuse. In addition to providing preventive health screenings free for their employees, they are

also offering educational sessions on diabetes, heart disease and smoking cessation. These are all in the realm of chronic health problems, and currently, chronic health problems account for a staggering 86 percent of national healthcare costs. If you haven’t developed your healthcare strategy, One Health @ Work can help. We have resources, expertise and tools to help you improve the health of your work.
