CHAMBER MATTERS Brescia University to sponsor Rooster Booster Congressman Brett Guthrie will University has been a part ing, Commitment to Growth in Virtue, speak at September Rooster Booster of Brescia the greater Owensboro community and Promotion of Servant Leadership.

Congressman Brett Guthrie represents Kentucky’s Second Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Second District is home to Fort Knox, Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace, Mammoth Cave National Park, and many of the Commonwealth’s most treasured locations.

Congressman Guthrie serves on the House Energy and Commerce (E&C) Committee for the 112th Congress. E&C is the oldest standing legislative committee in the House with broad jurisdiction over our nation’s energy, healthcare, telecommunications and consumer product safety policies.

Guthrie also serves on the following subcommittees for E&C: Subcommittee on Health; Subcommittee on Communications and Technology; and Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade.

Recognized for his proven leadership, he was also appointed to serve as an Assistant Whip within the Republican Conference.

During his tenure in Congress, Guthrie previously served on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Education and Labor Committee, where he was named the top Republican on the Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness Subcommittee Guthrie graduated in 1987 from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, with a degree in economics and went on to serve as a Field Artillery Officer in the

101st Airborne Division - Air Assault at Fort Campbell. Guthrie later earned a Master’s Degree from Yale University in Public and Private Management.

Congressman Guthrie comes from a small business, manufacturing background. Following his military service, he joined Trace Die Cast, the Bowling Green, Ky., based manufacturing business that was started by his father.

First elected to public office in 1998, Guthrie represented the 32nd District in the Kentucky Senate. In Frankfort, he served on the Education Committee, the Economic Development, Tourism and Labor Committee, and chaired the Transportation Committee.

Married to the former Beth Clemmons, they have three children, Caroline, Robby and Elizabeth.

• Tell us about your role at the Chamber in serving members.

As Membership Services Manager, my main priority is to help businesses and individuals take full advantage of their membership. Every business our Chamber represents is different, so the way each member utilizes their membership is different. For me, it is all about learning the needs of each business and tailoring a plan of involvement suited to meet their goals.

• What is your favorite part about your role at the Chamber?

My job at the Chamber puts me in direct contact with the people that make up our membership. As the liaison to Chamber Ambassadors and the Chamber Young Professionals, I work closely with people growing their business, so I get to see the

success stories, such as the local barbershop that has been visited by four new customers they met at Rooster Booster, and share in the excitement when a landscaping contractor lands a big account at Owensboro Buys It! • What is something that most people don’t know about the Chamber?

Most people don’t realize how beneficial their membership is to their business even if they don’t have time to be involved in events. Our website is an excellent referral source for our members. As a part of each membership, businesses are listed on our website. The 30,000+ people each month who visit www.owensboro.com/ chamber can view the business description and contact information, and even map the location. We can actually track the number

Ambassador of the Month Spotlight Pamela Burns Pamela Burns is owner of Holistic Balance - Mental Health and Hypnotherapy, LLC. Though Pam has been self-employed for two years she has been a Licensed Professional Counselor for 16 years. Her experience is varied, and includes serving as Program Manager for Adult Psychiatric Crisis Stabilization in Bowling Green. Additionally, she has worked extensively with “at risk” children and adolescents in the in-patient and out-patient arena and has worked as an out-patient therapist with adults in community mental health.

Burns received a BA in Psychology with a minor in Gerontology in 1994

and a MA in Mental Health Counseling in 1996 both from WKU in Bowling Green, KY. In 2007, she received her certification in Transpersonal Clinical Hypnosis and added a Sports Improvement Hypnosis Certification in May of this year. • Why do you choose to live and work in the greater Owensboro area?

Our community has so many different facets that are more commonly associated with large cities, but the great thing about our city is that every one of those groups celebrate together. A success for any of our businesses, for the school systems, the colleges, the city or the county…each achievement is a victory for the whole.

Whether I am attending a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of a new business or a groundbreaking for a brand new building, I know that we are moving forward, and I can’t wait to see where this road take us.
