ALOYZAS SMILINGIS (ELIS), 1938 Elis is a famous Lithuanian painter and sculptor. His talent for drawing was recognised when he was still a schoolboy. Determination to become a professional artist led him to the Academy of Arts in Vilnius, Lithuania. Search for self expression brought him into the three dimensional world of sculpture. Bronze, granite and other materials obeyed him and despite his non-conformist approach and mode of expression, artist became famous in the former Soviet Union. His large scale sculptures decorated many of public spaces. In the 80’s, during his visit in USA, Elis met Willem de Kooning and exchanged creative ideas. This meeting was a great inspiration. Artist resides and works in Lithuania, his art is owned by several Lithuanian museums and belong to private collectors in Australia, Italy, USA, UK, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Lithuania and Japan. “Artistic ideas are more important than a number of exhibitions, prestigious projects or faithfulness to one genre or style. I am not keen on reproducing myself. My thinking is changing and so does my art. I remain self-critical and walk on.” Click for more information

VLADAS KANCIAUSKAS, 1945 The author of indoor and outdoor sculptures, describes himself as a symbolist. His works combine different materials: granite and marble, steel and bronze. He emphasises line and colour, reflections and shadows and is inspired by nature, so often impressive animals, plants and insects are reproduced from stone and metal. Vladas is a very poetic personality and some of his sculptures are engraved with philosophical verse. In 1989-1990 Vladas improved his skills and knowledge in USA. He is an active participant of symposiums in exhibitions. His sculptures are owned by private collectors in Germany, USA, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania and Israel. “Human eyes are searching for beauty and pleasure, and when it is found, the tear appears, because one has a desire to touch and caress beautiful things. The same happens with sculptor’s work — if people want to touch it, it means the art is beautiful. My art is a journey from concrete to abstract, because abstraction is the highest form of mankind’s thinking. The highest form of art is a symbol, as it reflects global culture and art.” Click for more information

AURELIJA ŠIMKUTĖ-ENDRIEKĖ, 1984 Young and talented Lithuanian artist began her career as a jeweller. With her growth as an artist her creations grew as well and now she is making strong steps towards the world of sculpture. Her art is full of positive emotions — compassion, tenderness, happiness, humour and sometimes selfreflective sarcasm. It becomes clear at a glance, that her sculptures have been made with jeweller’s precision and motherly tenderness. Charming bronze characters tell interesting and powerful stories about life and feelings. Aurelija is an active participant in exhibitions. Since her graduation of Academy of Arts in Vilnius, she took part in 5 solo and 15 group shows. ”I started creating larger objects and I do not want to go back. There is much more space for imagination and the creation process is so engaging and pleasing. I can see my art in large formats. This is my goal now.” Click for more information

GEDIMINAS ENDRIEKUS, 1982 It is not easy to locate this sculptor in the contemporary world of information and media. That’s because Gediminas is not chasing fame and titles — the process of creation is all that matters to him. The artist chose to isolate himself from the hectic world and unnecessary influences. His art is inspired by feelings, visions from the past and current emotional state. Some sculptures are realistic and figurative, others remind of phantasmagoric creatures or plants from other worlds. “Since childhood I was interested in things that were not interesting to others. I was never fond of popular things or standard behaviour. Very often I behaved in a completely different way than I was told to, so I like to do everything my way and am not looking at others. I do not learn from mistakes of others, I rather make my own. Creation feeds me, so I don’t think about future. I cannot imagine a fulfilling work and quality art if one’s head is busy with management and development of public image. Sculpture is a hard work for one’s hands, back and lungs, but when your head is happy about the things you do, then difficulties do not matter.” Click for more information
