actors, make Wholetrain a film experience not to miss.

In 90 minutes, we see the GDR more sharply, more clearly: the skater

subculture shows that not all was grey-on-grey and drab clouds of

Trabant fumes. This Wild production (Ronald Vietz & Michael Schöbel) by

director Martin Persiel takes original clips of the “wheel-board-riders”

– straight out of the East German scene in the 80s – and mixes it with

animations and reencounters with the protagonists today. It is not just a

well thought out story on its own – this film also raises the aesthetic bar.

“Skating as freedom” is one of the leitmotifs of this film. Skating

“without pressure to be better than someone else,” as one of the main

characters puts it, became the goal in hindsight, or, said downright

harshly, “the desire for freedom turned lifestyle”. Unbelievable, if not

for the simple fact that this Californian fun could find its expression in

the GDR.

AFTER THE FALL 27/08/2015, 7PM GOETHE-INSTITUT, NEXT TO NAFTI Ten years after it fell, the Berlin wall, has, it seems, disappeared without a trace - at least as far as exteriors are concerned. The area that was once a deadly no-man’s land is now Europe’s largest building site. The city is now in the throes of enormous changes and doesn’t appear to want to look back at its past. This film tells a story from differing perspectives; it is a subjective search for what’s left of the wall, both in the city and in the minds of the people who live there. Take, for example, the American the past, reflecting on German his-tory and its denial. Then there’s Winfried Prem, a Bavarian demolition expert who fulfilled his life’s dream when he used his machines to “plough up” two-thirds of the almost one hundred and sixty kilometre long concrete wall. Two English homeopaths, on the other hand, have pulverised the wall to create a remedy for the treatment of such conditions as depression, panic, split personality and asthma. This film is an attempt to regard the wall as if it were an ancient myth, some ghastly fable, an unbelievable and absurd tale of yore. One of the most important perspectives in the film, however, is that of the camera itself, which captures Berlin in images that are both lyrical and poetic. A dream-like, musical journey along the border that once was.
