WWI: 1914–2014 SPECIAL EVENT
Justus Neumann revisits Karl Kraus’ satire The Last Days of Mankind (1918) in an inspiring lecture about the absurdity of war and the mistakes that mankind seems to be repeating throughout history. Karl Kraus illustrated this through his drama on the catastrophes of World War One (WWI). His chilling, almost prophetic visions of mankind make this work very relevant in today’s age of social and political transformations worldwide. Neumann’s presentation will be followed by drinks served in the cinema foyer, and by the screening of the critically acclaimed WWI drama Odyssey of Heroes (PAGE 34).

A PACT ZUM GEBURTSTAG
In East Germany in the 1980s, two teenage friends set up a pact where one of them takes the other’s girlfriend, which can be reversed down the track. Now, with Anna and Paul married with two children, the initial pact comes back to haunt them when Georg shows up. This thriller provides a number of twists and turns throughout its psychological cat-and-mouse game. Notable in the cast of this latest film is young actress Saskia Rosendahl, who was discovered by Cate Shortland, appearing in her Australian film shot in Germany, Lore (2012). DENIS DERCOURT was born in Paris in 1964. He spent part of his youth living with German relatives near Stuttgart. At university he studied music, politics and philosophy. From 1988 to 1993 he has been a viola soloist with the Orchestra Symphonique Français. From 1993 to 2012 he was a professor at the Conservatoire in Strasbourg. He has been living in Berlin with his family since 2010. Dercourt received international attention as a writer and director with the films Demain dès l’aube (2009) and The Page Turner (2006), both featured in the official program of the Cannes Film Festival. A Pact (Zum Geburtstag ) is his first film in German.

Based on the true story of West Germany’s first female bank robber, Gisela Werler. This is a tale of her escapades during the 1960s, and her development from shy worker to notorious felon. Reminiscent in tone of both Bonnie & Clyde and The Thomas Crown Affair, the film carefully recreates the period, including great use of music, split screen, and production design. Nadeshda Brennicke puts in an extraordinary performance as Werler, showing the way her character developed into a calculating criminal, defying gender expectations. Her two male companions learn that she is not someone with whom you can trifle. The police investigations into her crimes reveal the naïve understanding of criminal behaviour at the time, as well as sexist notions of women’s role in society. Indeed, the whole notion of women and fashion is cleverly satirised in this entertaining film. CHRISTIAN ALVART began at an early age to develop a fascination with, and love for, cinema and television. In 1999 he wrote, produced and directed his debut film Curiosity & The Cat, for which he obtained a nomination for the Max Ophüls Award. He subsequently developed scripts for the TV series Der Puma and Wolffs Revier, and served as director, author and co-producer of the multiple award-winning film Antibodies (2005). Alvart also directed the Hollywood productions Case 39 (2009) with Renée Zellweger and Pandorum (2009) with Dennis Quaid.

BROKEN GLASS PARK SCHERBEN PARK
Sascha is a teenage girl living in a rough urban neighbourhood who dreams about writing a novel featuring her mother. She also seeks to avenge her stepfather, who brutally murdered her mother and is soon to be released from jail. When she encounters a newspaper editor, played by Ulrich Noethen, and his fragile son, a love triangle ensues. It results in character growth for all three of them. This drama, with some amusing observations to temper the tragedy, provides some compelling insights into the way tragedy can lead to hope. Especially noteworthy is the strong performance by Jasna Fritzi Bauer as Sascha. BETTINA BLÜMNER was born in Düsseldorf. She studied media culture and design at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, followed by studies in directing at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and the Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV in Cuba. Her other films include several shorts, Naked City (2006) and Pool Of Princesses (Prinzessinnenbad, 2007), which won the German Film Award 2008 for Best Documentary.

East German cinema produced a number of Westerns in the 1960s, not only as means of exploring characters in challenging territory, but also as a satiric insight into the ‘wealth’ of Western society. Set in Canada during the late 19th century, the film documents the journey of a group of German-American immigrants, seeking gold in the Klondike region. This journey, fraught with danger, includes a female journalist, played by renowned actress Nina Hoss. After her initial trepidation about life, she develops a steely determination to complete the adventure. The quest for riches and some sort of personal epiphany for Nina’s character and the rest of the group culminate in a series of events that leads to irrevocable consequences. Beautifully filmed in the Canadian wilderness, audiences will be mesmerised by this journey and its inevitable conclusion. THOMAS ARSLAN was born in 1962 in Braunschweig. In Munich he took up German studies and history before studying film at the German Film & Television Academy (dffb) in Berlin. He has been working as a writer and filmmaker since 1992. His films include Mach die Musik leiser (1994), the trilogy Geschwister (1996)/ Dealer (1998)/ A Fine Day (Der schöne Tag, 2000) and Im Schatten (2009).

HOME FROM HOME— CHRONICLE OF A VISION DIE ANDERE HEIMAT— CHRONIK EINER SEHNSUCHT
The Heimat series by Edgar Reitz, stretching back over a number of years, did much to portray Germany as a significant, historic identity — its homeland, culture and people freed from the shackles of the wartime horrors. Now, Reitz returns with this revisionist view of ‘Heimat’ (homeland), set in the 19th century, when many Europeans settled in South America to escape the poverty and famine of the time. Using his well-constructed template of family, romance and drama, this new film focuses on two brothers and their hopes and dreams. Transplanting the notion of Heimat to another country, Reitz brings his continuing explorations of culture and identity to the fore, culminating in insightful observations and revelations about totalitarianism and hope. In this epic tale, the power of rural experience, conflict, faith and familial values combine to make this another compelling episode in the Heimat canon. EDGAR REITZ was born in 1932 in Morbach. He was a member of the Oberhausen Group in 1962 and, together with filmmaker Alexander Kluge, co-founder of the Institute for Film at the Ulm Academy of Design in 1963. A selection of his numerous and highly-acclaimed films includes: Mahlzeiten (1966), Die Reise nach Wien (1973), Die Stunde Null (1976), Der Schneider von Ulm (1978), Heimat (1982–1984), Die zweite Heimat (1985–1992), Die Nacht der Regisseure (1994), Heimat 3 (2004) and Heimat—Fragmente (2006).

A company executive in the throes of personal dilemmas due to his job, alcoholism and crumbling marriage, is given an opportunity to recruit a new American CEO for his German company. In circumstances that may help to save him from all his issues, his journey to America becomes more difficult than he expected. Caught in a number of potentially confronting events, he copes as best he can, which is not very well at all. Ulrich Tukur puts in another fine performance as the harried businessman whose encounters in America, plus his endemic alcoholism, lead to a catharsis with which he has to cope. The evocative cinematography of the urban landscape of Texas is reminiscent of the approach used in the film Paris, Texas. BASTIAN GÜNTHER was born in 1974 in Hachenburg and studied English, social sciences and sport at the Cologne University. He then worked as a trainee on several film productions and as a freelancer at the public broadcaster WDR/Phoenix in Cologne before becoming assistant director for Marin Martschewski and Christian Petzold. Three middle-aged sisters, one of whom is dying of heart failure, decide to take a final trip to Paris. What sounds like a grim tale is actually both moving and occasionally amusing, especially as the three of them have enjoyed their lives together. As the journey unfolds, their reminiscences of past events, respective marriages, relationships and careers all come to the fore. Along the way, they encounter the well-known actresses Angela Winkler and Beatrice Dalle, who provide some sympathetic support for the sisters’ journey. Death may be round the corner, but this is a life-affirming film demonstrating the power of sibling relationships. LARS KRAUME was born in Chieri, Italy in 1973 and grew up in Frankfurt am Main. When two brothers meet in their family’s isolated house on the coast, previously unresolved issues and tensions are revealed. Marten wants to pick up their jailed mother when she is released after killing their abusive father a few years ago, while Volker cannot forgive the way he was treated by his father and only wants to sell the house and forget the past. A former girlfriend of Marten appears to rekindle memories, as does a family friend who has her own observations and comments to make. This psychological drama turns into a tense observation of the way the past irrevocably impacts on the present. Well-written and powerfully acted, this film is sure to be a success. FLORIAN EICHINGER was born in 1971, he hated school so much that he decided to teach himself film-making. While he worked as an editor, he started to direct his first short films, music videos and commercials in the 1990s. Eichinger’s first feature was Bergfest (2008), an abyssal low budget father-and-son-drama which he financed with money earned from his commercials. Bergfest has been invited to more than twenty international festivals and won several awards. During this time, Eichinger decided to write and direct two more films about the serious consequences of domestic violence, containing autobiographical material. Nordstrand is the second part of this topical trilogy.

She relates her experiences to the camera in a documentary style approach while the audience witnesses her attempts to re-enter the dating game. One man she meets has a strange, sado-masochistic obsession, while another is into drugs and bizarre behaviours. As a reflection of contemporary, complex romantic life, the film reveals a great deal about the social demands on women in forming relationships and finding love. A young woman, Sophie, with plans for her career and for her romantic attachment with her boyfriend, is given the devastating diagnosis that she has a rare type of aggressive cancer. The film follows her fight against this dreadful situation, with support from her parents, friends, doctors and others. It is interesting to compare this insight into a cancer diagnosis with the Andreas Dresen film from 2011, Stopped on Track. There is a decidedly more upbeat tone to this film, with the determination that Sophie has to keep a positive attitude by still partying and enjoying her relationships. The title refers to her wearing a set of wigs of varying colours and styles to reflect her mood. This finely developed comedy/drama is both energetic and moving. MARC ROTHEMUND was born in 1968. He is the son of film director Sigi Rothemund. He began his career as an assistant director for, among others, Helmut Dietl and Bernd Eichinger. He made his directorial debut with various TV series. THE TASTE OF APPLESEEDS DER GESCHMACK VON APFELKERNEN
Based on a popular novel by Katharina Hagena. A granddaughter returns to her family home and rediscovers many memories about her past, including the death of a young woman, and the various games she played as a youngster. Hannah Herzsprung, a previous guest of the festival, plays the lead role over various time periods. Set in the 1920s, 1980s and the present day, the story centres on the apple tree which is the centre of her reminiscences. It was also the catalyst for the games she would play with her friends, leading to events that affected them all. The story also involves a number of revelations with historic overtones, relating to an inheritance as well as an unresolved death. These have an impact on all the women in this sprawling story that seamlessly flows over the different time periods. Sascha is a 10-year-old boy living in a suburban housing estate. He cannot read and write properly, so he hates school. Meanwhile, his single parent mother and his two siblings live a hand-to-mouth existence. Sascha resorts to petty thieving and hijinks to get through each day. Eventually he is diagnosed with ADHD and is given medication. His young girlfriend and his social worker help him to stop the bad behaviour and to improve at school, yet Sascha desperately seeks some attention from his mother. Over the course of time, his medication suppresses his feelings to the point where he can’t be happy anymore. How will this situation be resolved for Sascha and everyone else? What will become of his dreams to repair bicycles? This is a well-constructed drama employing current social issues to make some significant points. WOYZECK — THE TRAGEDY OF A SIMPLE MAN WOYZECK
Audiences may remember the 1979 Werner Herzog version of the Georg Büchner play about a psychologically tormented man and the consequences of this torment for his marriage. In this revisionist update of the story, noted actor Tom Schilling (Oh Boy ) plays a downtrodden man with a wife and child, whose poor circumstances, despite having three jobs, lead to him taking on an illegal drug trial for money. This results in side effects such as delusions, which in turn lead to tragic and brutal consequences for everyone in his life. His surreal visions and encounters with some shady Arabic men create a disturbing drama redolent with doom. NURAN DAVID CALIS the son of Jewish Armenian immigrants from Turkey, was born in Bielefeld in 1976. He studied directing at the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich. During this time, he assisted at the Kammerspiele in Munich and at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich. Since 2003, he has been directing his own stage plays. This confronting documentary details ten years in the life of a female transsexual prostitute from Lithuania, now living in Berlin. The film highlights how she started at an art school and how she evolved from being a boy into someone who was trapped in the wrong gender. From there on she had to keep fighting against expectations. Her life now on the streets of Berlin is presented unflinchingly, following her day-to-day encounters, including one in a porn movie theatre. The film also emphasises her non-conformist attitudes to life and her informal personal relationships. You may well ask yourself as you watch this film, how could Julia’s background and experience have lead to a different outcome?

FATHER’S GARDEN — THE LOVE OF MY PARENTS VATERS GARTEN — DIE LIEBE MEINER ELTERN
“Father’s Garden is an attempt at a personal revision of the past. I had always felt like a stranger in my own family until I noticed — not without disquiet — how similar we actually are. The more often I see my parents, all the more I am moved by their old age, by their gradual fading from life, by the dying out of an entire collection of memories. Thus, this film does not necessarily tell the parable of the prodigal son, but rather the story of parents lost. My parents reject computers, refuse to go online and do not think globally. They represent the typical ‘petite bourgeoisie’ in Switzerland, their viewpoints are decidedly conservative. Father’s Garden is not merely a portrait of my parents. Rather, it is the cinematic convergence of an awareness of life, representing a life in a bygone era.” Based on a synopsis by Peter Liechti. PETER LIECHTI was born in 1951 in St Gallen. Before becoming the co-founder of the KinoK cinema in St Gallen, he studied art history at the University of Zurich, followed by a diploma in teaching at the Zurich College of Art and Design. This intensely directed Austrian horror film will leave you on the edge of your seat until the shattering climax. A number of East Germans were murdered trying to cross the Berlin Wall. In this documentary, a few individual case studies are explored in this devastating insight into the enforcement of separation by the totalitarian regime. The film focuses on one woman whose trauma over the death of her son continues today. Delving into intricate detail and using some archival footage, the film follows her journey in trying to find her son’s body and the border soldier responsible for the murder. Researching the Stasi files, she eventually discovers details of the marksman responsible for shooting her son. The climax of the film is an encounter between him and the victim’s son. This documentary explores the role athletes played in the GDR, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s when East Germany was a major competitor at the Olympic Games. The film focuses on the intensive sports program with which the athletes, who were treated like heroes, were involved: Sandra Kaudelka (also the director of the film) who was a talented diver; Brita Baldus, three-time European diving champion; Ines Geipel, who holds a relay worldrecord; Udo Beyer, champion shot-putter; Marita Koch, 400 meter sprint world-record holder. Combined with well-sourced archival material, the film highlights the often brutal training regime to which they were subjected, and the personal reminiscences they have about their experiences, some of which still haunt them to this day. SANDRA KAUDELKA was born in 1977 in Leipzig. She began training as a diver in the fourth grade and went on to become the GDR champion in her age class in 1989. Beginning in 1949, a war veteran returns to find his life totally dislocated by an emerging nation and a family trying to cope with significant social change. He becomes an observer of the economic changes occurring in Germany, his grasping wife, and his son’s complex relationship with the family. This son then becomes the narrator with the film focusing on his relationship with his progressive wife and his own dependent son. There is a general air of both historic insight and satiric observation, especially as the three of them develop into compelling representations of the way post-war West Germany became both a leading economy, and a significant player in Europe. Yet tragedy, drama, social change and cultural upheaval are never far from the surface, leaving the viewer breathless by the end of the film. Jürgen Vogel, Moritz Bleibtreu and Meret Becker provide some stunning performances in a film that is not always what it appears to be. OSKAR ROEHLER was born in 1959 in Starnberg. He is the son of authors Gisela Elsner and Klaus Roehler. His career started as a screenwriter before he directed his first feature Gentleman in 1995. The famous-in-Germany tale of World War I navy vessel SMS Emden and her crew is brought to life in this handsomely produced period piece. Told in flashbacks from the perspective of Lieutenant Commander Helmuth von Mücke, this amazing story begins in the German controlled port of Tsingtao in China at the outbreak of war and follows the light cruiser through enemycontrolled waters around the Cocos Islands where it is sunk by the HMAS Sydney. The real adventure begins there, with von Mücke and his crew commandeering a rickety old schooner. They sail to Indonesia to attempt a daring return to Berlin, some 13,000km away. Much more than a survival tale, Odyssey of Heroes pays tribute to the extraordinary respect and admiration the Emden’s crew was given even by their enemies (including the Canberra Times newspaper) as ‘gentlemen soldiers.’ Odyssey of Heroes is a fascinating history lesson and highly entertaining drama. BERENGAR PFAHL born 1946, started his career with several contributions to the children’s program Die Sendung mit der Maus (since 1973). A film that will certainly generate some controversy, this is a drama about two teenagers who team up to cause mayhem amongst the teaching staff of a local high school. Alev is a manipulative student who likes to take things to an edgy level, and Ada is a 15-year-old outsider whose behaviour is regarded as unacceptable in the school environment. When they team up, boundaries are pushed and sexual issues are explored, leading to blackmail and catastrophic situations. What games are being played here, and who will be the loser? Reminiscent of the film Cruel Intentions, this insight into the minds of young people and contemporary disaffection leads to a number of twists and turns that will leave you gasping until the end.

Clemens is new to the resort, and is keen to fit in and practice as a massage therapist. The two develop a powerful sexual relationship, while at the same time Lara’s alcoholism affects her work. In this swirling vortex of entropy, how will they both cope and what will happen to Clemens’ idealistic view of the world? THE STRANGE LITTLE CAT DAS MERKWÜRDIGE KÄTZCHEN
Every year there is one film that stands out as unusual and quite bizarre, and here it is. The film centres on a family dinner, a brother and sister visiting their parents, and various relatives who arrive and leave in seemingly arbitrary fashion. Set in a Berlin apartment, the film focuses on the interactions, clipped dialogue and observations made throughout the evening. Experimental in tone, with carefully constructed camera set-ups, fluid editing and staged movements plus a sense of the witty and the absurd, this film achieves a stirring existential tone. Winning plenty of acclaim from international film critics, prepare yourself for an experience unlike any other film you have seen. Oh yes, look out for that cat! RAMON ZÜRCHER was born in 1982 in Aarberg, Switzerland. From 2002 to 2005, he attended the Bern University of the Arts, completing an art degree with a focus on video. In 2005, Zürcher received the Kiefer Hablitzel Award for Visual Arts for his video work. Since 2006, he has been studying at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb). The darker side of human interaction is revealed in this drama about a group of people that seem to be pursued by bad luck. We meet: a police officer in a bear costume; a documentary filmmaker who finds it difficult to find an appropriate story; a pedicurist who works in an intricate fashion with his older female patient; a wealthy couple who find it difficult to travel in a German built car; a history student whose visit to a concentration camp turns unpleasant; and a wild man training a raven in the woods. As the individual storylines develop, a decidedly dark humour pervades the film, with a definitely warped view of human existence. Amongst a huge cast is noted actress Corinna Harfouch. FRAUKE FINSTERWALDER was born in 1975 in Hamburg. After studying literature and history in Berlin she worked at the Maxim-Gorki-Theater and the Volksbühne, before becoming an editor for the Süddeutsche Zeitung. BELA KISS: PROLOGUE BELA KISS: PROLOGUE
Bela Kiss was known as one of the most brutal serial killers of the 20th century. At the beginning of WWI he strangled or poisoned more than twenty young women and his wife. Later their bodies, preserved in alcohol, were found in metal barrels on his property near Budapest. According to rumours, Bela Kiss was sighted all over the globe for decades. He was never caught. A century later, five young bank robbers seek a hideout in a remote hotel in the middle of the woods. At first they enjoy the anonymity of the hotel — but with each day the discomfort grows: strange things happen in this mysterious place and the tension within the group erupts. The supposedly safe place turns into a deadly nightmare — a life-and-death struggle ensues. Bela Kiss: Prologue was produced by a German filmmaker in Germany with an international cast. In English, without subtitles. LUCIEN FÖRSTNER was born in 1987 in Stuttgart. He is a director and actor, best known for Noir (2013). In 2009, he co-founded the Stuttgart based film production company Mirror Maze. His television ad Anti Aids Trailer was selected as one of the best five productions by young directors at the Spotlight Festival 2009. Bela Kiss: Prologue is his debut feature.

A German and an Italian playing reggae in Jamaica? What seems odd at first starts to make sense in this documentary which explores the similarities and differences between reggae music and European music. Filmed over seven years, the filmmakers shot a great deal of footage of German reggae musician Tilmann Otto aka Gentleman and Alborosie from Italy finding their home within reggae. The world of ‘Jah’ is explored as well, going far beyond musical culture. Interviews with various musicians, such as Richie Stephens and Damian Harley, and academics, such as Professor Carolyn Cooper, round out this exploration of the world of reggae. In a similar vein to Fatih Akin’s Crossing The Bridge, which dealt with the cross-over between Turkish and German music, it is shown that there are no boundaries when it comes to the universal language of music. NOËL DERNESCH born and bred in Zurich, now lives and works in Berlin. He was educated at the School of Art and Media Design in Zurich, where he specialised in film and video. Since then he has been working as an independent movie director and video artist, directing several music videos and commercials, including international productions, and has realised a number of short and documentary movies. Caroline Link is probably best remembered for her award-winning film Nowhere in Africa. She returns to an exploration of culture and personal journeys with this film set in Morocco. Ulrich Tukur plays a celebrated theatre director producing a major play at a festival; his disaffected teenage son also being sent there by his mother to try and establish some sort of father-son relationship. What develops is a journey for both of them, where they explore resentments and issues from the past. The disappearance of the son forms a catalyst for some paternal psychological insights. The son’s discovery of a young rural woman, treated as chattel by her family, adds an extra element to this acutely observed drama of cultural divides and personal tensions. CAROLINE LINK was born in Bad Nauheim in 1964 and studied at the University of Television & Film in Munich. Her graduation film Sommertage (1991) won the Kodak Award at the Hof Film Festival. Her 1996 feature debut Beyond Silence (Jenseits der Stille ) was nominated in 1998 for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The little ghost lives in the castle of Eulenstein. It awakens for precisely one hour after the clock strikes midnight. Despite the warnings of a friend, Mr Tu-Whit Tu-Whoo, the ghost would like to see the world by daylight just once. Meanwhile, Karl, Hannes and Sophie go on a nightly excursion to the castle, where they have their first encounter with the ghost. The following day, the ghost wakes up at twelve o’clock — noontime. Its joy about this soon passes, as — discoloured black by the first sunray — it scares the town’s inhabitants and causes a commotion. Chased by the police, the ghost asks the children for help. They find out that every ghost follows its own designated clock. Since during the yearly inspection, the town-hall clock was accidentally incorrectly by exactly twelve hours, the Little Ghost has been forced to wake up during the day. This fast-paced action film for older children delivers a fine combination of personal glory and self-sacrifice, all for the sake of effective team work. JOACHIM MASANNEK was born in 1960 in Hamm and studied German, philosophy, and film in Munich. Since 1985, he has worked as a production designer, lighting technician, cameraman and author. After working on various animation projects, he wrote the children’s book Die Wilden Fussballkerle inspired by the soccer team he founded in Munich. His films include all five of the award-winning The Wild Soccer Bunch films (2002– 2007) based on his books, and numerous short films and TV movies.

This impressive short animation was produced as a student thesis. It is set in 1973 during the key days of the GDR and is based on the director’s father’s experience of life in the East and his story about fleeing to the West. Using voice-over narration, the short explores his state of mind as he attempts to cross the border, chased by dogs, soldiers and other terrible ‘Easterners’. The film becomes a longing for freedom, showing a cynical and yet also nostalgic take on life in East Germany. It is a great animation that effectively portrays some complex issues in a very brief running time. All textures in the animation are authentic prints of the GDR — from original letters and reports to newspapers and comics — creating a real existing paper world. MARK HUFF was born in 1983 in Hamburg, Germany. Ever since he was little, he has loved sketching and painting and watching cartoons, especially He-Man and all things Disney. He trained as a digital media designer and worked for magazines. He then studied communication design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hannover, where he first met ARNE BREUSING. During this time he freelanced as a 3D-artist and illustrator. After university, Mark worked on his first feature film project Tarzan (released February 2014). Currently, he is working for the advertising agency Hogarth Worldwide as a CGI-Artist. MARK HUFF: www.ruff-huff.com ARNE BREUSING: www.dezignphreak.com
