A very warm welcome to the 14th annual Audi Festival of German Films proudly carrying the name of its principal sponsor for the eighth consecutive year. Once more this unique festival of German language films is presented by the Goethe-Institut and German Films in close partnership with our most enthusiastic and supportive family of sponsors.

Join us in welcoming our guests of honor and celebrities from overseas who are very much looking forward to meeting their Australian audiences: Florian Stetter, Sascha Arango, Thomas Köner, Timo Vollbrecht and Peter Claus.

We have assembled a spectacular collection of films highlighting a robust and very creative film industry in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The variety of movies as selected by our Australian-German jury is most amazing, ranging from thrillers, alpine Western, to comedies and thigh-slapping Kraut pleasers, to quirky drama queens. We are thrilled to present the very best of German filmmaking to you from art house films to massive European box office hits in eight Australian cities, including Hobart for the very first time.

FLORIAN STETTER Actor

PETER CLAUS Journalist

German film and theatre actor Florian Stetter has appeared in successful productions such as Sophie Scholl (Sophie Scholl—Die letzten Tage , 2005), Lucie de Beaune (2005) and The Taste of Appleseeds (Der Geschmack von Apfelkernen, 2013). He was awarded several prestigious prizes for best actor. Florian Stetter will be seen at this year’s festival in Stations of the Cross (Kreuzweg, 2014), Nanga Parbat (2009) and Beloved Sisters (Die geliebten Schwestern, 2014) — our Opening Night film in Sydney and Melbourne.

Peter Claus is a renowned German journalist who has worked throughout different forms of media. In the 1980s, Claus worked as a journalist in the GDR. After the reunification he established himself as a film and theatre critic, especially in radio journalism. Today he freelances for media outlets such as DeutschlandRadio Kultur, WDR and dpa (the German Press Agency).

As a guest of the 2015 Audi Festival of German Films, Peter Claus will be reporting for DeutschlandRadio Kultur and www.getidan.de

SASCHA ARANGO Screenwriter

German composer Thomas Köner is a distinctive figure in the fields of contemporary music and multimedia art, working across the spheres of composition, visual arts, installation work and music production. Thomas has been commissioned to create music for silent films for the Auditorium du Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Centre Pompidou, and others. At this year’s festival, Thomas will create a live soundtrack for the 1925 silent film Faust by German cinema legend FW Murnau.

Sascha Arango was born in Berlin in 1959 and is one of Germany’s most prominent screenwriters. He also writes audio plays and stage plays and has won several prizes, including twice winning the Grimme Award, a leading German television prize.

Sascha wrote the script of the adaptation of the classic The Adventures of Huck Finn and will allow us a glimpse into the world of screenwriting in a Q&A after the screening.

After narrowly escaping death, Charleen’s frantic mother Sabine calls on her therapist friend Karl to supervise the recovery process. Things start to look up when she meets Linus, a geek from school also on Karl’s list of patients. Could this weirdo be the true friend she’s been looking for all this time? MARK MONHEIM was born in Bonn in 1977. As a teenager he was involved with Greenpeace and after high school he completed his community service at a children’s hospital. He lost his mother in 1995, an event which shaped him as both a person and a filmmaker. He studied Documentary Film Direction at the University of Television and Film in Munich. His works include Michelle (short doc, 1999), Hass mich (short, 2002), and Mit sechzehn bin ich weg (short, 2007).

Öllers and Niederländer are two highly paid consultants, touring the world’s dirtiest countries seeking to satisfy their clients’ hunger for profit. Their goal seems to be within their grasp: to ascend to their company’s top echelons and finally be made partners. They don’t come much tougher than Agnieszka. A 30-year-old from a background of crime and violence, Agnieszka has just completed a prison stretch in her native Poland. Penniless and desperate she accepts a job from Madame, an ageing former ballerina who has disappeared from public view and into the city’s seedy underbelly. Matters become complicated when she meets Manuel, a 16-year-old boy who falls in love with her. TOMASZ E. RUDZIK was born in Poland in 1979. He went to high school in Cologne and studied in Berlin and Munich. He was a participant in the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing in Warsaw in 2010 and the Munich Screenplay Workshop in 2010–2011. His other works include Flaschendreh (short, 2002), Garage Love (short, 2004), and Desperados on the Block (2009).

Noa from Israel has been living in Berlin for eight years now. She is about to graduate from university and recently moved in with her German boyfriend Jörg. Although everything should be running smoothly, she suddenly experiences a personal crisis. That is why Noa decides to take a break and spontaneously flies back to her homeland. Sun, food, family, speaking her own language… it’s all doing her a lot of good. Suddenly Noa’s grandmother is hospitalized which is the perfect excuse to extend her stay, thus suppressing the problems which await her in Berlin. But everyday life hunts her down in Israel faster than she could ever have imagined. Old problems resurface and new ones appear. The intensity of pressure that she felt in Berlin comes to a boil, as her grandmother’s condition rapidly deteriorates. Ironically she feels just as misunderstood in her homeland as she already felt in Berlin. When Jörg shows up in Israel, Noa’s two carefully separated worlds collide.

ESTER AMRAMI was born in Israel in 1979. She moved to Berlin in 2003 and began studying at the Konrad Wolf University of Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg in 2005. Her works include Berlin Diary (2005), Isi Come Isi Go (2009), and Two Men and a Table (Zwei Männer und ein Tisch, 2011).

The man is none other than the writer, playwright, philosopher and hothead Friedrich Schiller, whose career has just begun. Both sisters long for love, but only one, Charlotte, is free. Neither noble nor wealthy, Schiller is no match for Charlotte, whose mother wants her to find a suitable man. Yet in the wake of the social and political upheavals rocking France on the eve of the Revolution, new forms of cohabitation emerge. DOMINIK GRAF was born 1952 in Munich and studied at the University of Television & Film in Munich. His graduation film Der kostbare Gast received the Bavarian Film Award. He has alternated between TV and film productions, many of which have been presented at international film festivals. His most successful films include A Map of the Heart (2001), The Red Cockatoo (2005), and Dreileben — Don’t follow me around (Dreileben—Komm mir nicht nach, 2011).

Forty-something Anna and her 32-year-old boyfriend Stefan return to Anna’s childhood home in former East Germany. At the cottage in a lush forest they are met by Bernd, an old friend of Anna’s. Bernd is with his long-term boyfriend, Marc, a psychoanalyst. The plan is to enjoy a relaxing summer weekend in each other’s company. It’s not long before things start to deteriorate. It turns out Anna and Bernd were more than just friends many years ago. Marc starts playing mind games and brings up the memory of a tragic incident involving Anna. Marc also starts putting moves on Stefan.

As the boozing and frank talk continues, the line between reality and fantasy blurs. Anna begins to question everything around her. Could this all be a dream, or a nightmare, and who is that strange woman she keeps seeing?

Answers to these intriguing questions are played out in an atmosphere of mounting suspense. This impeccably performed and crisply written psychodrama keeps you guessing all the way.

Jack is a 10-year-old whose life in a fatherless home has given him maturity beyond his years. He cooks dinner, looks after his little brother Manuel and fills most of the housekeeping gaps left by Sanna, his frequently absent and neglectful mother. Whatever semblance of stability Jack has known is suddenly shattered when he is placed in a state-run home. Following a tragic incident, Jack runs away with his brother Manuel and embarks on a dangerous and disturbing journey across Berlin. The little boy must draw on everything he knows about the adult world to survive on the streets and find his mother. Ivo Pietzcker gives an astonishing performance as this brave, scared, determined and amazingly resourceful boy. In the tradition of Antoine Doinel in The 400 Blows (1959) and the eponymous hero of Pixote (1981), Jack is a boy you’ll never forget.

EDWARD BERGER was born in Wolfsburg in 1970 and studied Directing at New York University. He co-founded the production company ‘Hound Dog Films Inc.’ and has worked as both a writer and director. His works include Gomez—Heads or Tail (1998), Female2 seeks Happy End (1999), Willkommen im Club (TV, 2004), Windland (TV, 2007), Ein guter Sommer (TV, 2011), and Mutter muss weg (TV, 2012).

In exchange for his eventual freedom Halmer must help Conrad whip ‘The Olive Grove’ into a final draft that will surely guarantee it gets made. Nothing is that easy of course. Halmer is looking to escape, Ephraim has loaded his guns in case of trouble, and his hefty daughter Marianne has the hots for the hapless hostage.

Suspense, psychodrama, romance and black comedy combine to winning effect in this decidedly offbeat examination of the creative process.

ANDREAS ARNSTEDT was born in 1969 in Gera, Germany. He is an actor and director, known, for Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten, Küstenwache, and other television series. He studied acting in Potsdam-Babelsberg and The Theater Club, Berlin. He has appeared in various television and theatrical productions and proved his comedic skills on stage in Munich and Cologne. The Cuckoo and The Donkey is his second film as director and screenwriter.

FATIH AKIN is a German filmmaker of Turkish origin. He won the Golden Bear (Berlinale) for Head on (Gegen die Wand) in 2004 and became one of the most influential European directors at the age of 30. At that time he had already completed film school, two short films, one documentary about his parents’ migration from Turkey to Hamburg, and three feature films. He then achieved international success with the drama The Edge of Heaven (Auf der anderen Seite, 2007). He was honored with the Special Prize of the Jury at the Venice Film Festival for his next film Soul Kitchen (2009).

Documentary maker Rüdiger Suchsland intelligently explores and expands upon Kracauer’s themes. Featuring magnificently restored clips from newsreels, forgotten films and classics including The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, People on Sunday, Dr Mabuse, der Spieler and M, this is a compelling excursion into the cultural, social and political climate of what would eventually give rise to the darkest chapter in Germany’s history. Primarily active as a journalist and critic for print, radio and the internet, he is also a speaker, instructor and author on film, theory, East Asia, Zeitgeist, and contemporary issues. He is a member of numerous film festival programming committees and served as the German correspondent for the Cannes Critics’ Week from 2001 to 2012. The Villa of Tugendhat is a spectacular example of modern architecture and was built in Brno, Czech Republic in 1929. This documentary depicts the chequered history surrounding this building and its occupants, including the displacement and emigration of the Tugendhat family during World War II. The villa not only survived such a tumultuous period of history, it went on to become a dance school, a therapeutic centre and a school for disabled children in the communist post-war years. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This documentary features interviews with family members, occupants of the house, and art historians, as well as photos and film footage.

The most beautiful words are left to the ordinary Czechs with spinal injuries who lived there as children under Communism, and who simply revered its light, space and architecture as a background to their emerging lives — underscoring the film’s theme about the relationship between people and the hard and complex nature of brilliant things. MO ASUMANG was born in 1963 to a German mother and a Ghanaian father.

She was in part raised by her maternal grandmother, who she later found out had been involved with the SS during the war. Asumang is not just a filmmaker, but also an actress, TV presenter and social activist. Many of her works such as Roots Germania (2007) and Road to Rainbow (2010) touch on issues of racism, social integration and international affairs.

Culture clash on the sandy tracks of Burkina Faso. Africa’s biggest cycling race, the Tour du Faso, is a ten stage challenge for European amateur adventurers and African local heroes. It’s a passionate race for making their dream come true. Yet the film does not focus on the question of who will win — instead, it pays particular attention to the value of the protagonists’ experiences. Since 1987 the annual race has retained its unique and very African character as a ‘flawed’ — but much more friendly — copy of the Tour de France, its European model. The race is held in average temperatures of 40ºC, the course includes dusty, challenging roads, the advertising ‘caravan’ consists of a single car and the cyclists camp overnight on the African savannah.

Tour du Faso takes the audience back in time to pre-commercialised decades.

By following the Tour du Faso, we will get to know more about cycling, Africa and the extraordinary fighting spirit of the underdogs who take part in it.

Set in the year 1958, Ernst Ostertag is a young teacher who falls in love with transvestite entertainer Röbi Rapp. Although homosexuality is not illegal in Switzerland, being gay still means living a closeted lifestyle. As their love deepens, Ernst and Röbi become contributors to ‘The Circle’ (‘Der Kreis’), a ground-breaking magazine for gay men established in 1951. ‘The Circle’ was headed by Karl Meier, an actor from the Cabaret Cornichon ensemble who edited under the pseudonym Rolf. Part documentary and part drama, The Circle features interviews with the real Ernst and Röbi — now in their 80s and still very much in love — and recreations of key chapters from their shared past. The result is an entertaining and fascinating window into a world of gay solidarity and support that existed long before Stonewall and LGBT pride.

STEFAN HAUPT attended the Acting Academy in Zurich from 1985 until 1988.

He has been working as a freelance filmmaker since 1989 and was president of the Swiss Union of Film Directing and Screenplay between 2008 and 2010.
