Center of the Motorcycle Universe taking place in the back lot at the Indian dealership and the riverfront across the street was busy with people browsing the vendors, having a cold one at the outdoor bar, and enjoying the music. Main Street is my favorite place for people watching and it didn’t disappoint. Being close to Halloween, several riders were wearing masks and costumes. Even though it’s only a four day event there are enough bike shows, music concerts, and crazy contests to keep you entertained from sunup to sundown. Of course, there’s still racing going on at the track and this year there was even a class for electric motorcycles.

By Mike Savidge Biketoberfest & the AIM Expo It’s the middle of October and many of our fellow riders around the country are facing the bleak prospect of that thing called “Winter”. Here in Florida we’re salivating over the arrival of cooler temps and drier weather as the riding season returns. Summer is always a brutal time to ride in the Sunshine State and this has been one of the hottest and wettest.

If you’re a motorcyclist enthusiast, or a biker, or a rider, or someone with any interest at all in two-wheeled transportation, there’s likely something to interest you at one, or both events. And being only about 60 miles apart, it’s easy to attend both. I did, and it made for a great adventure in what, for this weekend, was the Center of the Motorcycle Universe.

Except for bike nights and poker runs, there’s not a lot on the schedule until September when things get going again. And if you take a look at any event calendar for October you’ll find events taking place around the state each weekend. Cotee River, Sanford, Starke, Avon Park, the state H.O.G. rally are just a few. There’s also Biketoberfest and the American International Motorcycle Expo (AIM Expo). BIKETOBERFEST (Photos on page 16) Biketoberfest was created in 1992 to bring in bikers to fill the Daytona Beach hotels, restaurants, and bars at what had been a traditionally slow time of the year. Using the end of the season motorcycle races as a base, a somewhat smaller version of March’s Bike Week party was designed that now attracts more than 100,000.

I was surprised on Sunday afternoon to encounter no traffic backups on the Ormond Strip. There was a crowd at the Iron Horse and places nearby but Smiley’s Tap and the Broken Spoke were closed and when I stopped at Destination Daytona, many of the vendors were already packing up. The waitress at the half empty River Grill told me the place was packed the day before. Guess everyone headed home early. AIM EXPO

The American International Motorcycle Exposition is in its third year and growing fast. The AIM Expo is held in Orlando at the Orange County Convention Center. The first AIM Expo had about 300 vendors, this year there were 560. The first two days of the event are reserved for dealers, industry folks, and the media. The show’s free phone app was helpful in finding specific vendors and it also listed schedules for the many educational seminars that were being presented. Many companies show off new products here and this year they included new helmets from Bell and Sena, which launched what they called the Intelligent Noise-Control helmet. AGV Helmets has a new visor which can change from dark to clear with a push of button. Kawasaki showed off the new Ninja ZX-10R at their booth but one of the coolest products I came across was an airbag vest that was designed to protect your upper body in a crash. The weirdest vehicle had to be an amphibious motorcycle. There were many international vendors but there was also a section called “Made in America” showcasing U.S. made products. As in previous years there was a collection of restored American, Japanese, and European vintage bikes. New this year was an elite bike builder competition called “Championship of the Americas” with the winner going to the World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Essen, Germany. You could also take a demo ride at the AIM Expo Outdoor area which is a shuttle ride away. The brochure describes it as a being short walk; don’t believe them. Available this year were new models from Can Am, Honda, Kawasaki, Kymco, Harley-Davidson, Suzuki, Star, Yamaha and Zero. The evening entertainment includes a Garage Party sponsored by the soon to open Ace Café of Orlando on Friday which took place at Orlando Harley-Davidson. Saturday night was the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. CONCLUSION Is it good or bad having these two events at the same time? I think it’s very good. Each is different and some riders will have a preference more for one more than the other. But the great thing to me is the opportunity to experience so much of the motorcycle industry in one weekend. For four days it’s like living in the Center of the Motorcycle Universe.

The weather did not look good according to the weather reports with an 80 to 90 percent chance of rain for Thursday and Friday but that is NOT how it turned out! The Harley Gods shined on us once again with only an occasional shower or down poor depending on where you were and when, but with a smart phone and the radar app it was very manageable. The Key’s Bike Week with parties and entertainment scheduled for Monday to Thursday started off very slow again this year due to poor weather. On Friday morning I headed down with Stu Jones from Paradise Riders to film the Run and ride down for another episode of “The Florida Motorcycle Riding Life Style” show to be aired on Fox Sun Sports Network this Fall. The weather for Saturday and Sunday was blue skies and beautiful for the Duval Street Bike Show with all the show bikes parked in front of Rick’s/Durty Harry’s and Sloppy Joe’s dominated by all of the Custom Baggers from all the local builders. They really amped it up this year with their beautifully detailed creations of rolling art producing Booming Music and some great showmanship. Congratulations to Peter Gonzalez for taking Best in Show and Cartel Baggers for winning Best Pro Shop. We signed up about the same amount of people to play poker as we did last year about 3,000 but we had a lot more people pay for parking on Duval Street. $15,000. The money was donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Frances J. Zesiewicz Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease at the University of South Florida. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. One of the most common symptons of Parkinson’s is a tremor of the hand but it also causes stiffness and slowing of movement. There is currently no cure, only medications which are not always successful. This year AMVETS Post 44, American Legion Riders Alafia Chapter Post 148, Go For A Ride Magazine, and Show Me’s Sports Bar and Grill of Tampa are joining forces to help reach this year’s goal of $16,000 with all proceeds going to the Frances J. Zesiewicz Foundation. The funds will enable the foundation to provide therapy and fund clinical studies and/or a scholarship to enducate physicians treating patients with Parkinson’s. The days event will include a ride-in, food, drink, vendors, live music, raffles, auctions and a 50/50. It will take place at the same location as last year. The Hidden River RV Resort in Riverview from Noon until 5pm. Registration will only be $10 and includes a meal from Show Me’s Bar & Grill and a raffle ticket for the Grand Prize.

Help is needed to make this year’s event another success. 4509 Eagle Riders Okeechobee had our first Chili Cook Off on Oct. 10, 2015. It was a great day. There were 10 chiliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s; all were very interesting. The first place team was Rick and Patti Berglund. Congrats!!! It was yum! Second place was Betty Boop, from the Iron Eagle Bar, and Third place team was Linda Kennedy and Tim Carrick. The apron contest went to Team Diana Stark and Jeannie Bramlett, for their college football theme. Our charity is Dog Chain who train service dogs for military and the handicapped. We hope to make this an annual event. Thanks to all who cooked and participated! Thank you!

Ahhhhhh Yessss! Do you feel it…that little tease of lower humidity and cooler nights. The absolute perfect riding weather is upon us. Time to brush up on my GPS skills and hit the back roads again. I was doing a little research and came across some interesting things in the biker world that I thought I would share with you. I wrote an article some time ago on helmets about some of the latest trends in helmet construction. Technology has caught up with the helmet world again. I recently discovered the Scully AR-1. [This is not an endorsement by me or GOFAR.] This is a full face helmet with built in tech stuff. First, it has a 180 degree blind spot camera built in. This means that you can see from ear to ear behind you by merely looking at a heads-up screen on the right corner of the face shield. You barely need to move your eye, which means less time taken away from watching the road. If you are in a middle lane and you turn your head in one direction, say, checking the right lane, you now see the left lane as well. Mirrors just let you see behind you, this allows you to view on your sides as well. The heads up display (HUD) seems to float right in front of you. Unlike the Reevu helmet which used a mirror system ($400), this is a true infinite focus camera. This makes GPS use a dream from its integrated navigation system. It is fully Bluetooth connected allowing you to use the internet via smartphone. It also comes with “over-the-air” updates allowing you to download new features 8

as they are released. It has an intelligent audio system that gives you hands free calling and music streaming. Importantly, it is made of a lightweight aerodynamic polycarbonate alloy shell and is a DOT/ ECE certified helmet, with a quick release chin strap. The visor is fog, scratch and glare resistant. There is even a feature where you simply push a button on the side of the helmet and the visor tints. This is the brainchild of Marcus and Mitchell Weller, both bikers in their own right, but both are human-centered technology guys with some very impressive creds. Ok all you hard hat peeps. Ready to run out and order a Scully? Wait for it….wait…..be ready to shell out $1500.00. Be the first to get one and GOFAR will do a feature article on you, I’m sure. Always worried about your ride getting stolen? Well, in another update from a previous article about bike thefts, I discovered that the people at BOSCH have developed a new, smaller and more versatile motorcycle electric control unit (ECU) that can connect to the rider’s smartphone. The new

engine management system will allow a connected smartphone to be used as a readout device, telling owners when to get their vehicles serviced and offering riders the opportunity to read and save information on their fuel consumption, lean angle, speed, and distance travelled. The side note to that is that the smartphone can also be used as a remote immobilizer system. By using the smartphone app, the rider can control the fuel injection system effectively shutting it off. The new Bosch engine management system is bringing digital intelligence to the two-wheeler. Bosch is currently in talks with Indian manufacturers and international companies and says the ECU will be in production by the end of 2015. Did you read the article in GOFAR about the Harley electric bike? They’re not the only dog in this race. Enter the “Lightning LS-218”. Lightning Motorcycles has developed a sport bike looking beast that puts the rocket in crotch-rocket. Its name comes from its speed trials where it reached 218 mph. If you’re giving the bike the look over, there are two things you might pick up on. One is, there is no exhaust pipe and two, it has a chain drive. The designer explained how you can only make so many changes in a new concept motorcycle before riders run for the hills. So the gas tank is basically still there, except it now houses electric motors and batteries. The bad news…it’s $38k. The good news…you can actually get rebates and state credits to lower the cost. The bad news…a full charge gets you only about 100 miles at normal speeds. Wonder if it comes with a Scully helmet. Get out and ride…and as always, B-safe.

The city of New Port Richey rolled out the red carpet for bikers with this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cotee River Bike Fest. Sims Park hosted several bands during the 3 day event with vendors throughout the downtown area which was restricted to motorcycles only. A poker run, bike shows, demo rides, contests, and perfect riding weather brought in thousands of riders to the most biker friendly city in America.

Women Riders Weekend

I attended the first Women Riders Weekend Bash in Homosassa, Fl. Talk about having an AWESOME three days! Over 160 women from all around the U.S. attended. Some rode in from California, Wisconsin, Virginia, and many states in between. Friday started with a buffet dinner with guest speakers, prize drawings and a meet and greet at the Plantation Inn. Saturday morning we were welcomed at Ocala Harley Davidson where we enjoyed food, entertainment and some helpful training tips. That evening we went to High Octane for music, drawings and fun. Sunday we enjoyed a country breakfast at Crystal River Harley, followed by roadside medical training, a photo session and blessings of the bikes. We took a ride down the Ozello Trail then returned to High Octane for some more drawings and fun. Monday a few went to Cedar Key while the rest of us started our journeys home. Hats off to Road Queen, Linda Dalton, and everyone who helped her put this together. It was incredible meeting women riders from all over. New friendships were formed. I am already looking forward to next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event!

Off Road Riding: Straight Rhythm 2015

On October 10th the second annual Straight Rhythm contest took place in Pomona California. For those of you that don’t know what a straight rhythm contest is, it is a new type of racing unveiled last year. There are two participants and they lineup side by side. The track consist of a long straightaway with multiple jumps, whoops and obstacles. The riders race from one side of the track to the other jumping all of the obstacles and going as fast as they can. Last year’s event was a big hit, and Redbull pulled out all the stops this year to put on an amazing show of skill and speed. To make things a little more interesting this year, the contestants launched from a start gate that was in the air. From there the riders went right into the first rhythm section. It made for a great start to a great event. This year in the Open class the reigning champ James Stewart came back to defend his title and did so with convincing style and speed. James was suspended by the FIM last year for not reporting his use of a drug that helps control is anxiety. This was his debut since his suspension, and it looks like he used the time to get faster. James was blistering fast in the whoops section, and was only beat one time by reigning Supercross and Motocross champion, Ryan Dungey. That wasn’t enough for him to lose his title and 18

James won the event convincingly. Ken Roczen came in second and Ryan Dungey rounded out the podium in third place. In the 250 class Malcom Stewart took some lessons from his older brother and dominated the lites class winning every race he ran. The semi finals of the lites class was a battle of the teammates. RJ Hampshire had a really nasty crash in the whoops section in his race against Jordon Smith. RJ was knocked out for 10 minutes and needed medical attention. After they took care of RJ, Malcolm Stewart took on Jordon Smith, while Jessy Nelson went up against Shane McElrath. In the end, the final was Malcom Stewart lined up against Shane McElrath. Shane rode great but he was not able to top the speed of Malcom. great new style of racing and the results raise my anticipation of the supercross season. It will be really interesting to see if James Stewart can keep up his winning ways and show the FIM that they really did a disservice to the fans when they suspended him for the 2015 season…. Salton Sea, ever heard of it? Neither had I until just a few years ago. The Salton Sea or the Salton as it’s called by those who know her is an inland saltwater sea located in the deep south of California roughly 61 miles from Palm Springs about middle ways across the state between San Clemente California on the Pacific side `and the Arizona border. There ain’t any sailing going on any more, but like so many other “never hearda places” it has a strange and fascinating history. For many years now I’ve been searching for a place where I could live off the grid for free. No house payment, no property taxes, no society rules or regulations. Just live in peace with no drama. Well come to find out there are a few places where that’s still possible but most I’ve found have cold winters which doesn’t suit my idea of a good place to hang my helmet. Two places I’ve found so far that may work are Salton Sea and the other more notable is Slab City both in southern California and actually only about 25-30 miles apart. Slab City is still on my “go to list”.

Sailing The Salton Sea In 1905 the Big Ditch Dig got started, I don’t know how long the canal was gonna be or how much got dug. What I do know is there came an unusual flash flood and the canal over flowed. I’m told the dam holding back the Colorado broke and water gushed through the partly dug canal and filled the humongous hole that is now the Salton Sea. From the accounts that I was told it was quite a fiasco.

Reminisce of good times gone bad. The stench of dead fish still fills the air near the beach. There was one hotel, a small convenience store and as astonishing as it sounds a real estate office still hanging on when I was there a couple years ago. Believe it or not there’s a state park on the northeast side of the sea, Salton Sea State Recreation Area that offers camping. The Salton continued to get saltier and saltier. It got so salty the fish began to die off by the tons per day. The sport fishing died. The Salton was dying. The stench of rotting fish was so bad property values plummeted, folks couldn’t sell their once prestigious property. No one wanted to live in a 120 degrees desert and choke on the smell of rotting fish.

Salton Sea is the largest lake in California. In the beginning it was just a mammoth low lying scorching hot sand depression in the middle of the desert. The game plan of the Feds was to divert water from the Colorado via canal to the higher desert areas to irrigate the friggin’ desert! Now you gotta get the picture here. The place they were trying to irrigate to grow crops is in the Mojave Desert! Yea, you got it Death Valley. Hello my fellow riding friends… Can you say November? Where has the year gone? Time for my northern friends to start returning and increasing the number of attendees at the events. What a difference they make to Florida, I’m sure all the businesses are happy to see them arrive. I look forward to hooking up on Thursdays at the Shell gas station here in LaBelle to go riding with them. I want to point something out to those that think they are safer when riding in or near the town they live in. Just because you are close to home this does not make you any safer. It might just be the opposite because your guard is down since you are in familiar territory. It is said that more accidents happen close to home, I believe it. R.I.P. to the young LaBelle man that lost his life recently because of a person

turning left in front of him. Yes even in a small town like LaBelle, it happens… the rider was not far from home at all. Ok here’s something that should make you smile. I got a text message the other day that the old Shady Gators was reopening and I need to get out there. So as soon as I got feeling to where I could ride without being full of medication I hopped on my bike. BTW an orange a day keeps the doctor away. You are not going to believe this, I was coming up near the 4-way stop on 29 south and had to do a really quick slow down, there was an iguana crossing the street in front of me. It was so cool looking with its shiny body strutting along so everyone could see him. I watched behind me and the dump truck had to go around him, I bet the driver thought that was a funny sight. I’m glad the little guy didn’t get creamed, that area is dangerous and lots of traffic passes through there. Sorry didn’t get a photo though. Ok as I mentioned I was heading to Ortona to Shady Gators, now called Sportlight Plus. The place has been bought by a really nice guy named Gary. He’ll be there during the open hours so please take a moment to say hi and thank him for supporting the riding community. He is very biker friendly and looks forward to being a part of the poker runs

and/or just those days that rides stop in for a cold one. Next door to him is Pig In Or Pig Out catering, his name is Tim. He too is very biker friendly and is hoping to have food supplied on the weekends for those hungry souls that stop in for a spell. Tim’s had some award winning bbq come off those grills at competitions, I’ve had some of his food a few times, and it really is good. I think that with the combination of these two guys, “ Sportlight Plus” is sure to be a success. Upcoming events to make sure are added to your calendars are Ft. Myers Bike Night in the downtown area. First one is the second Saturday of November, stop by the Go For A Ride Magazine booth to say hi! Then there is the Adopt A Family Christmas ride to deliver Christmas to 5 families in Cape Coral, it’s a free ride, no fee to go on the escorted ride. Any donations are welcome whether it is food items, gifts, or money. There is the 4th Sunday of the month party at Mugs & Jugs in Lehigh. Can you believe this has been going on 5 years? Please come by and say hi. Wall plaque goes home with the largest group to ride in and sign up. And a $25.00 gas card to the best slow racer!! Think that’s about it for now. Florida State HOG Rally

The weather was perfect, the venue of Six Bends Harley Davidson as Rally Central was fantastic, and over 1500 H.O.G. members joined the fun at the 2015 Florida HOG Rally in Fort Myers, FL, that began October 7 and ended October 10. H.O.G. members from as far away as London, England, Sedona, Arizona and Pacific Grove, CA, came to enjoy our event.

The motorcycle rally began with the Rally Committee riding in on an antique pink fire engine dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness. The first wave of 600 participants enjoyed guided and selfguided rides, local entertainment and a complimentary spaghetti dinner. The biggest draw for this rally was the guided rides. Thursday opened with a guided ride to Wooten’s Everglades Adventure and over 100 bikers were guided down to the Everglades by the SWFL H.O.G. road captains to take in swamp buggy rides, airboat rides and a free pulled pork lunch. Our Local Lee County Sheriff’s Department was kind enough to get the bikers out on the open road. There were also a number of other guided rides to attractions in the area including Solomon’s Castle in Ona, FL, and Octagon Wildlife Sanctuary. The Paradise H.O.G. Chapter sponsored a “Day in Paradise” in Naples, FL. The venders were in full force, including a great SWFL Mobile Military Museum display. Bike games offered a little laughter and levity during the afternoon. The SWFL H.O.G. group provided Smores 26

desserts for all participants who came to see Deb and the Dynamics rock Thursday evening away. The full complement of guided rides on Friday included an early morning jaunt down to the keys leaving at 6:30AM!! Forty-Two people woke up early and rode down to Islamorada to have lunch at Hog Heaven. The late risers had their choice of a number of guided rides. Some spent a day on the beach at Gulfview Manor Resort on Fort Myers Beach, and others enjoyed a little gambling at the Seminole Casino Hotel who offered a $20 Free Play coupon. The premier ride enjoyed by over 100 bikers was the Tail of the Gecko ride that wound its way around the Arcadia area on back roads with numerous curves, and old cemeteries and included a free chuck wagon lunch along the river. For those who stayed close to home, drill teams from Daytona and Fort Lauderdale performed and Jerry Paladino of “Ride Like a Pro” fame also performed. H.O.G. members were also treated to ice cream sundaes in the afternoon. Grayson Rogers and his country western band worked the crowd that evening and had everyone stomping their feet. Saturday brought the Parade of Flags where all H.O.G. members could display their chapter flags in a police escorted loop ride around South Fort Myers. Adam Holbrook performed his amazing stunts, and drill teams from Miami Independent and Fort Lauderdale also performed. The closing ceremony was one of the most moving and inspirational with a Military Tribute to all our veterans. A Color Guard made up of veterans from the local American Legion and VFW posts gave a 15 gun salute to our veterans, and the Harp and Thistle Pipe and Drum Band from Estero, FL played the service branch songs. The highlight of the tribute was a fly-over by the Hughie helicopter owned by Lee County Mosquito Control. The Rally closing entertainment was Grand Funk Railroad who put on a fantastic show for over 1200 H.O.G. members. The 2015 Florida H.O.G. Rally was a great success, mostly due to all the volunteers who helped make this rally one of the best ever.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride

On Sunday, September 27th, I did something I’d never done before when riding a motorcycle. I wore a tie. And a suit coat. And compared to some of my riding partners that day, I was underdressed.

The occasion was the 2015 Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride which is a world-wide effort to raise funds for prostate cancer research. It’s estimated that more than 37,000 riders took part in this year’s ride, and that included a fair number of genteel lady riders also. A photo of tv’s Mad Men’s Don Draper, in his suit astride a bike, inspired the development of a themed ride that is truly different. As they say on the website, gentlemansride.com, this is “a celebration of the art of being dapper and the style of classic custom motorcycles”. That meant a roadway lined with Café Racers, Bobbers, Flat Trackers, vintage scooters, and metric motorcycles from years gone by greeted us as we arrived at Dime City Cycles in Largo for the Tampa Bay area ride. I borrowed a sweet 1966 Honda Dream for the day from Brian, the owner of Stitch on Time while he was aboard his Honda 750 café racer. Our friend, Oscar joined us on one of his classic Triumphs. Riders in suits, vests, bow-ties, and their finest Sunday riding attire awaited the start of the ride which would take us on a leisurely loop up to Dunedin, then out to the Pinellas beaches, before ending in downtown St. Petersburg. Motorcycle parades always draw crowds but I know the people who saw the entourage of more than a hundred bikes being piloted by well-dressed riders had a unique story to tell when they got home. “Really, I saw this motorcycle gang, and they were all dressed up like they were going to church, or something”. The ride was free to enter but riders, and others, make pledges and I was told that the Tampa Bay ride raised over $20K. Worldwide, donations were still being taken until the end of October but in 2014 over $1.5 million was raised and this year’s goal was $3 million.
