SPECIAL NOTE FOR REMOTE BUYERS AND SELLERS If the buyer and seller live far apart (perhaps the motorcycle was listed on a global sales website such as eBay®) and won’t be meeting in-person, the parties can use an escrow service that holds the buyer’s payment until the vehicle is received and inspected by the buyer. This protects both the buyer (in case the vehicle’s condition was grossly misrepresented) and the seller (in case the buyer sent a fraudulent check or money order). mic.org BUYING A USED MOTORCYCLE While there’s nothing quite like the feeling of taking ownership of a sparkling, factory-fresh motorcycle from your local dealership, there are times when a second-hand bike fits the bill. You may find a great deal on a used bike at a dealership or in the hands of a private seller. But buying a motor vehicle from a private seller has its pitfalls, and we would like to share some tips.

Ask the owner a lot of questions. Why are they selling it? Do they have service records? Has it been in a crash? When you go to see it, bring a friend who knows about motorcycles too, Courtesy of the Motorcycle Industry Council to help you objectively evaluate the bike. Better yet, arrange to bring it to a dealership for inspection if possible. Biker with a Badge By M. W. Simpson

I hope you had a joyous Christmas and a safe New Year. As we start 2016, my wishes are that our country remains safe and that you, the biker, remains safe as well. I had the opportunity to participate in a couple of Toy Runs over the Christmas holiday. One was for the USMC Toys for Tots and another one for the Shriners Hospital at USF. Nothing like helping the kids to make a biker warm & fuzzy. Then, while prepping for this article, I got the chance to go out to another USMC Toys for Tots drive in Oldsmar, FL. There, the marines brought in 3 amphibious assault vehicles to display at the WalMart. I arrived to start gathering info on a couple of Hillsborough County Sheriffs motorcycle deputies for a story. The side board to that was being allowed to ride back to Tampa in one of the assault carriers while being escorted by the HCSO motor unit. It was very cool and the motor unit did a fantastic job on a night escort from Oldsmar to Gandy Bridge. Which brings me to my subject. Meet Master Deputy Jay Hajj and Deputy Carrie Cooper. They are assigned to district 3, which is the northwest side of Hillsborough County. Deputy Hajj is a 19 ½ year veteran of the department. An avid rider since about 12 years old, Jay has rode or owned just about every type of two-wheeler out there. He is one of the agencies police bike instructors for the 27 motor-man unit. Well, let me correct 8

that…25 man, and 2 women. Deputy Carrie Cooper, with 6 years under her belt, is presently an alternate motor operator. She normally works patrol in her cruiser, but several times a month she does her shift on the bike. This allows her to stay current on the motor skills she learned in the police motorcycle school. Dep. Hajj added that it is one hard school but Dep. Cooper qualified for the alternate slot and is waiting for a full time opening in the unit. Carrie has also had experience on her own motorcycle, but when asked what she took away from the school, one of the things was being trained to be more aware of what was going on around her while riding. She said that one of the main things she sees while on patrol is people totally unaware of the vehicles around them. She has handled plenty of crashes involving distracted drivers and like many of us, has had to dodge a few cagers herself. She also said that learning control of the bike and how it reacts to her as the driver was a big part of the training for her. She believes that more women would enjoy “riding their own” if they mastered those techniques. She fully believes that riders should take the advanced bike course. Dep. Hajj warns new riders that they need to get out and put some ride time on their machines. He says he can always spot a new rider by the way they drive. Some are obviously shaky and unsure about the operation of a cycle. Some think they have it all together but they make mistakes that can be fatal. For example he said, most riders don’t understand that the faster they drive, the more your vision narrows. You become so in tuned to what is right in front of you that you don’t see anything around you…like other vehicles, retaining walls or sharp curves. w w w.gofarmag.com

The Police Harleys are loaded with plenty of gear. Dep Hajj opened his tour pack which was stuffed with the “tools of the trade”. There is a radar unit which has 2 antennas mounted to the bike. This radar can clock you either coming or going from the unit. They also have a laser speed gun that they can aim and single out one particular vehicle. There is a Bluetooth police laptop which allows them to write reports; gather license or a person’s info; a driver’s license reader (similar to a credit card reader); and a printer that will spit out a citation in seconds. They also have GPS that allows the dispatcher to know where they are. The deputies told me that each member of the unit averages about 100 citations in a month’s work cycle. Do the math…27 deputies x 100 ticket a month is…2700 tickets a month! Jay told me they are usually speeding citations, but it could be anything. Both stated that the things they enjoyed were doing escorts and doing “show & tell” with kids. Carrie chiming the kids…”How fast will it go”, “turn on the lights & siren”. As evident from that military escort I mentioned, these men AND women, are professionals. If just doing police work isn’t dangerous in itself, then these officers have to beware of cagers. Save a life, watch out for motorcycles. Now let’s ride and….Bsafe.

Let Me Tell Ya’

By Mike Savidge New Year’s Greetings It’s hard to believe that the calendar on the wall has run out of pages and 2016 is staring me down already. Once again, I ran out of year before I finished everything on the to-do list. I have a theory that time is passing faster as I add on the years. Of course, there’s always the possibility that I’m just getting a tad slower. I hope 2015 was a good year for you and, if not, here’s hoping the next one turns out better.

Parkinson’s Fund Raiser Returns with New Date and New Location 2015 saw the creation of the inaugural Shakes, Rattles, Rides and Rods for Parkinson’s Disease. Rick Karczewski is a military veteran and a fellow rider from Brandon whom I met several years ago while covering veteran’s events in the Tampa area. Like my wife, he has Parkinson’s and they are being treated by the same doctor at the USF Medical Center, Dr. Theresa Zesiewiecz, one of the best you’ll find. Rick, along with his

fellow AMVETS Post 44 members, and the American Legion Riders from Post 148 in Riverview, planned and coordinated the event this past February at the Hidden River Travel Resort in Riverview. More than $15,000 was raised for Parkinson’s disease research. Pretty impressive for the first time out of the gate.

Go FAR will continue to evolve as we work to bring you news and views concerning the world of motorcycles. Our social network community is growing. You’ll find daily updates on our Facebook page where we’ve just launched our “Bike of the Week” feature. You can also follow us on Twitter.

This year’s event has a new date, Saturday, January 23rd and is moving from Riverview to the AMVETS Post 44 clubhouse on State Road 60, between Brandon and Plant City. It’s a great place for a party with acres of room for vendors and parking. The clubhouse is large with plenty of seating inside the bar or on one of the enclosed porches. Your $15 donation gets you food and a raffle ticket for the grand prize. A Good Time for a Good Cause is included at no additional charge.

2016 will see the debut of the Go FAR Online Business Directory which is something brand new for Florida’s motorcycle community. Wouldn’t it be great to go to one source for an accurate listing of motorcycle businesses in your area? It will be free for you to access and a basic listing will be free for any motorcycle related business. Check out our website at www.gofarmag.com to see how it looks. Shakes, Rattles, Rides & Rods Returns

By Mike Savidge Last year, Go For A Ride teamed up with AMVETS Post 44 and American Legion Riders Alafia Chapter Post 148 to stage the first ever motorcycle event in the Tampa Bay area to raise funds to fight Parkinson’s Disease. AMVETS member Rick Karczewski, who has Parkinson’s, came up with the idea for the event and through the efforts of sponsors, vendors, and the motorcycle community over $15,000 was raised. The money was donated to the Michael J Fox Foundation and to the Frances J. Zesiewicz Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease at USF. New Date and Location This Year This year the event has a new date and new location. It will be held on Saturday, January 23rd at the AMVETS Post 44 Clubhouse on State Road 60 between Brandon and Plant City from Noon until 5pm. A $15 donation will get you lunch from Show Me’s restaurant in Tampa and a ticket for the Grand Prize drawing. There will also be live music, auctions, 50/50, vendors and karaoke. Donations are being sought and there’s still some vendor space available. If you can donate or help out in any way, please give as a call at 813-505-5119. We look forward to seeing you at this year’s event. What Is Parkinson’s? Parkinson’s is a disease that affects more than five million people on this planet. It’s a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder with no known cure. The current treatments available can sometimes mask the symptoms but work with varying degrees of success. Symptoms are progressive and can range from mild tremors or frozen muscles to complete physical incapacitation. It’s estimated that there are 60,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States

5 Benefits FL Veterans Should Know About

By Mike Savidge

Florida has one of the largest populations of military veterans in the country. We’re third behind California and Texas with more than 1.5 million who have served their country. We appreciate their service and want to highlight a few benefits that everyone might not be aware of. More information about veteran benefits can be found online at the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs website (www.floridavets.com).

3. “V” for Veteran Driver License – A law was passed in 2011 that allows Florida veterans to have a “veteran designation” added to their driver license. You must provide documentation of an Honorable Discharge and pay a small one-time fee to have a “V” added. Any other applicable license fees will apply. This is an easy way to show that you’re a vet without carrying around a lot of paperwork. 4. Florida State Park Discount Pass – Veterans, active duty service and reserve member can receive a 25% discount on the annual pass which gives you access to 161 Florida State Parks. Free lifetime family passes are available to veterans with service connected disabilities, surviving spouses, and Gold Star Parents of military vets who were killed in combat. 1. Dental Insurance – Having a dental insurance policy can take some of the pain out of a visit to the dentist. Through a partnership that the VA established with Delta Dental (www. deltadentalvadip.org) and MetLife (www.metlife.com/vadip), eligible veterans can purchase affordable dental insurance. This also applies to family members who are receiving care under CHAMPVA. There are no eligibility limitations based on service-connected disability rating or enrollment priority assignment. 2. Education Benefits – in addition to the US Government’s GI Bill plans to help veterans further their education, Florida State Colleges and Universities offers some perks to vets. Veterans can obtain priority when registering for courses and in some cases they can be given academic college credit for training and education they acquired in the military. Consult the Office of the Registrar or the Veterans Liaison on your local campus for details. Florida also waives out-of-state tuition fees for all honorably discharged veterans. For older veterans who were inducted prior to completing high school, they can be awarded a State of Florida High School Diploma. 16

5. Business and Health License Fee Waivers – If you’re a veteran who’s starting a business within 24 months of your honorable discharge, there’s a chance you can have some of the initial license or application fees waived. There are more than 20 business professions under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and 30 professions under the Florida Department of Health that are eligible. Off Road Riding: Four Little Words

By Lowell Anderson

Every now and then you will hear a piece of advice that sticks with you. Sometimes it’s a saying dreamed up from a celebrity or someone famous, sometimes it’s something your parents used to say to you growing up. Sayings like, “If ya want it done right, do it yourself!” or “Nothing worth having ever comes easy.” These are the type of sayings that stick in my mind and come to the surface when I am looking for answers. One of my fondest riding memories was the first time I ever jumped a big double riding moto. On a Sunday at a local track I made the decision to finally jump a series of doubles that I was never brave enough to attempt. I remember finally doing the jumps and showing up for work the next day. I was pretty excited about my experience and the word had gotten to Sane Watts that I was jumping some pretty big doubles at the local track. He asked me about my riding the previous day and then gave me another saying I haven’t forgotten. “Big doubles big troubles!” I think that was his way of just telling me to be careful. I never forgot that moment. For myself these are more than sayings. These are memories and anthems to live by and I find myself referring to them often. When it comes to riding, there have been some sayings like this that have always stuck with me. I remember when I first started riding road bikes, a group of us were getting ready to go on an 18

aggressive street ride. Most of the guys going with us were racers, and at the time, I hadn’t even been to a track day. Needless to say, I was a bit nervous when all the guys started gathering and we were getting ready to go. I had ridden with a few of these guys before and I remember thinking that it was going to be a real struggle just to keep up without killing myself. Some of these guys were really fast, and I knew once we got out on the open rode we were going to be hammering through some corners. One of my buddies obviously saw the distress all over my face and came over to chat just before we headed out. In a brief two minute conversation, he gave me a piece of advice that I has stuck with me through every riding adventure I have been on since that day. What was that gem you ask? What was this piece of wisdom that has more than once saved me from an early demise? Four little words…”Ride your own ride.” I remember reciting that saying a few times that day in my helmet when I was pushing my limits to stay with the group. In the end, I am sure it saved me from pushing it too far. I made it through that ride without any injuries and to my delight, I wasn’t the slowest guy that day. Those four words have followed me through all my different riding adventures. When I first started riding off road, certain types of riding came to me a lot easier than others. I remember going to a motocross track with some friends many years later. We went to a large riding facility and they had all kinds of different terrain to ride. Motocross came pretty natural to me because it was on a track and like the road racing I had done in the past, it was easy for me to adapt to that environment, but when

we went into the woods, things got real in a hurry! I remember going into the woods on a beaten trail trying to keep up with some of my more experienced friends. Within minutes I found myself struggling to keep my stability. I hit some bare tree roots that had come through on the trail. The next thing I knew I was bouncing myself and my bike off of a few trees before I finally came off the bike and nearly knocked myself out cold. I remember laying there thinking to myself, “Wow! This is way harder than it looks!” When I got up to get my bike the second thought in my mind was, “Ride your own ride….idiot!” This little statement is so important no matter what your skill level is. Many new motorcyclist make the mistake of going into motorcycling without taking the time to learn a little about what they are doing. I have seen so many people get new dirt bikes only to find themselves selling them after a few trips to the hospital. I have also seen tons of incidents on the street that simply could have been avoided with a little training. Simple things like not smashing your front brake on wet grass or gravel. This sport isn’t something you want to jump into and just try to “Keep up” with your riding buddies. Sometimes that is the worst thing you can do. You have to pace yourself and increase your skill set. Avoid being pressured by others to do things you don’t think you are ready for. You should be the one that pushes yourself and your levels. So whatever style of riding you enjoy please keep those four simple words in your memory bank. Hopefully they will keep you from doing something silly… ”HEY Y’ALL! WATCH THIS!”

Road Trippin’ By Hyway

There use to be a Honda commercial that used the catch phrase “You meet the nicest people on a Honda”. I’m sure there are millions of great folks who ride Hondas but meetin’ great folks who ride motorcycles ain’t limited to just Hondas. My point is the “Biker Community” in general is just a unique bunch of free spirited people who share a common bond for the joy of ridin’ their bikes regardless of make or models. If you are the least bit serious ‘bout ridin’, you quickly learn the number one “Biker” rule. “Never leave one stranded…NEVER!”. Like most who ride, ridin’ out to Sturgis is always buried in my thoughts. I’ve been blessed in so much as I’ve been to the rally several times, but this particular time I wanted to check Sturgis out after the rally. It was late August, there was already a strong hint of fall in the air. I was riding in the Custer State Park looking for a particular rustic campground. Despite getting’ directions from the ranger and usin’ the stupid park map I couldn’t find the friggin’ campground. It had been a chilly overcast day with spits of light rain on and off all day. Getting dark the temperature was dropping and the rain was now coming down harder at a steady pace. Cold, soaked to the bone and thoroughly pissed off, I pulled over to look at the useless map one more time before shredding it!

Did This Really Hap pen? me was to ride back to the ranger shack and ask the ranger again. I pondered her advice, with no other real option I headed back. I was about to leave the ranger shack and give it a second shot when she pulled up. She pulled up close, told me to hang on, went inside for a minute or so, came back out. “Listen, I have a room at the Best Western in Cross City. Let me book you a room for the night”. Blindsided by the offer, I quickly refused the offer. “Hey, I know you are a guy but don’t be a stupid guy! It’s raining harder, its freezin’ cold, follow me”, she ordered. In the lobby of the hotel I put up another gallant fight to no avail as she booked and paid for the room. Then again she blindsided me when she handed me a 20 and said the ranger told her to give it to me!!!!! Another gallant fight ensued and again I found myself loosing the battle, but the war wasn’t over, no not by a long shot. I made her agree to meet me in the dining room in an hour so I could buy her dinner, finally I scored one for the guy’s side.

I know this story sounds made up, but I swear on my mother’s grave it is 100% real, but as the say you can’t make this stuff up. Hey folks if you like the high quality of this magazine, let our sponsors know, drop your cash at their shop. Keep the wind in your face and the sun to your back. Catch ya at the next gas stop. Have a question or comment? Drop me a line at: hywayrebel@gmail. com

After dinner we made a pack to meet in the morning around 7 in the dining room and I would buy breakfast. Needless to say I had a tough time going to sleep that night. I just couldn’t figure out what was happening. I finally came to the conclusion that she was just a very kind hearted gal, who wanted to share some joy. It was a long night with very little sleep for me.

Next morning I was up early, did the usual morning routine thing, caught the local weather, packed my gear and went to the dining room. I sipped on coffee and watch the clock in the dining room slowly tick the minutes away. 6:50, 7:00, 7:15, 7:30 and still no show. About 10 to 8 I went out to the parking lot and looked for her bike, not to be found. I’ve often wonder what became of her. Vanished, gone like a thief in the night. Like the Lone I was still sittin’ on my scoot when Ranger, does she just ride the country another biker stopped. Dressed in full looking for people to help? I don’t even rain gear wearing a full face shield helmet know her name. I wonder if she is still they asked if I was all right. That’s when riding the countryside spreading good I realized it was a female voice. “Yea, I’m will. A phantom ghost rider, drifting good just a little turned around.” Whach in and out of people’s lives. Here for ya lookin’ for?” She asked. I explained my a fleeting moment then disappearing situation, we both looked at the map, but forever without a trace. All I can recall neither of us had a clue, her suggestion for is, she had mentioned she was gonna 20

meet up with some biker lady friends in Colorado and if my memory serves me correctly she told me she lives in Tampa. So hey if you read this article, Hyway says “Howdy”, and I still owe you a breakfast.

Kruisin With Kati By Kruisin With Kati

January Riding

Well, if this doesn’t beat all. A few days ago four keys on my laptop stopped working. When I was on Facebook trying to find anyone that could help me before I go paying hundreds of dollars to get it fixed it was suggested to just hook up a wireless keyboard… hey it works!! But I still want to get the keys fixed. I don’t think I can write a sentence that doesn’t use the letters A, S, D, or F, I’ve tried. For now this keyboard on top of my laptop will work just fine. Can you say lunch? Hmmm, today after Tom got out of work he asked if I wanted to ride out to Ortona to Sportlife Plus to get some lunch. Sure I thought this would be a nice easy ride away from traffic, we could sit out by the water and chow down. Well we get out there and my luck doesn’t fail me, there is no food. There were some riders there enjoying the relaxing atmosphere though. Pig In or Pig Out BBQ that is stationed right next door to Sportlife Plus was out at some competition and I sure hope he wins and then gets back to taking care of us on weekends. Maybe next time we go out there for a Saturday lunch there will be food, I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling this way. Such a great little get away to not have even a burger & fries. Oh well. So we left there and headed to Hwy27 to check out a little place in Moore Haven we heard opened. Hmmm musta heard wrong because the place we checked out was closed. Ok now, this is getting serious, we’re both hungry. I suggested let’s keep going south then get on Hwy 80 and stop at Pioneer Gator Bait, the food is always very good there. If you stop in be sure to get fries, they are the best I’ve had! Well guess my idea of stopping in there to eat was a bad one, the place was packed solid. I looked in 24

the door (saw Robin) and saw there was a pool tournament going on. Wow, I can’t believe how many people were there, I also saw a lot of food in front of folks so I knew it would be a long wait. We decided to just mosey on. The weather was very nice so this search for food was being done on a comfortable relaxing ride. At one point we passed about eight bikes headed west on 80, see it was a great day to ride. Once we got back to LaBelle it was easy to find some food, we can go home or just stop in at one of the many restaurants. I didn’t feel like cooking so stopping it was. Had a wonderful lunch then headed home. Guess what? No issues at all with my “Big Boy” he ran like a charm and I’m even comfortable with finding neutral. Remember we have to use neutral to get it started and to use the reverse. Not to change the subject but I just realized I don’t have many days left to go find Santa Claus to get our picture with my new ride. By the way on our Facebook Go For A Ride page we have a bike of the week promotion started. Proud of your bike? Email us a photo! I’d like to take this moment to wish all of you reading my article a Very Happy New Year, may it be one with lots of safe happy miles with smiles. OMG 2016 is almost here, omg soon it’s going to be 2020. WOW! Guess I should start thinking about a New Year’s Resolution. Have you got one that you’ll hold throughout the year? I doubt it, we only make resolutions just to break them, right?

BTW, one of the events I went to this month was the Bikes for Tykes in Naples. Very good event and one that should be added to a few more organization’s calendars for next year. The event is about getting bicycles for the kids of Naples. Used donated bicycles get revamped and given out and new bikes are always welcome too. There is something for kids of all ages from rock climbing to a bike & car show. To Teddy and the gang that put the event together, Great Job! And see you again next year! More photos from our events can be seen on the Go For A Ride Facebook page.
