Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person.
Cyberbullying is a fact and reality. -With the Internet, mobile phones, and chat rooms more teens and younger are victims. -It can even go as far as breaking into someone’s account to steal passwords and send damaging messages. -Cyberbullying creates anxiety and depression in youth. It can affect concentration and grades.
Motives for cyberbullying? -They see it as a way to stay popular. -Hurting others makes them feel powerful. -It helps them cope with their own low self-esteem. -They think it will help them fit in with their peers.
Should cyberbullying be considered a criminal? (My opinion) Absolutely. Cyberbullying is teaching children and adults in today's society that we can bully behind a fake username and get away with it. A lot of kids are hiding behind their ‘'freedom of speech‘’ anonymity(and behind their parents who refuse to admit that their kids are bullies and keep making excuses for their child’s behavior). The problem is that those bullies never have to deal with any consequences so now they're taking it further and further. People say ‘’if you get bullied, stop being on Internet.’’ Okay. So we all turn off the fun and often educating tool called Internet and only bullies are left there. It means, they win. It means, they get away with it again. Cyberbullying should be considered a criminal because it ruins lives,it makes victims feel depressed and even suicidal. It’s just as destrucitve as ‘’normal’’ bullying. Cyberbullying is not a joke and I don’t think people are paying enough attention to it. The way I look at it, the law needs to keep up with the times. There is no difference between threatening verbally and sending it through text message, other then the fact that a text message is easily traced back to the sender as hard evidence. It’s sad that only five states have laws against cyberbullying. It should be treated like any other type of bullying, police should start involving more before it is too late. If you ever see cyberbullying on any web page, don’t ignore. Report it. A life can be saved that way.
