WELCOME GEORGE JENKINS FANS

TO THE 2020 FOOTBALL SEASON>>> Football season is here! It signals the start of another great school year, an opportunity to play on a field of green, or enjoying the strategies and decision-making that occurs among players and coaches. It is a game worth not only watching but our community gets to participate in every Friday night. As we start the 2020 Eagle Football Season, I want to express my thanks to our George Jenkins Community for not only watching our student-athletes this season but also supporting them through booster club organizations and volunteering. While you could watch a football game without a drink or snack (I guess), parent organizations help to create a community atmosphere by attending and adding to the atmosphere of this weekly event. I am extremely proud of Coach Canning and his coaching staff as they work with our students. Not only do they teach students the game of football, they emphasize skills that go beyond the game. Coach Canning and his staff are dedicated to the development of these young men on the field and in life.

>>A MESSAGE FROM THE

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Consistency is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. Our athletic programs have maintained high levels of academic and athletic excellence, and continue to foster the total growth and development of our studentathletes. Our 2019-20 athletic season showed again the strength of our overall program George Jenkins High School has won the “Large School of the Year Award” for the Best Athletic Program in Polk County presented by the Ledger and Polk County Sports Marketing 14 times. I could not be more proud of all our athletes and coaches for their accomplishments. With that said, the anticipation and excitement here at Jenkins surrounds the upcoming football season.

Our football team enters the 2020 season after one of the most exciting and competitive seasons in the history of GJ Football. We owe a great tribute to the athletes and coaching staff that produced a season to remember. They played each game with heart, passion, and purpose. They played as the underdog at times, they played as the favorite at times, and they were never outplayed. They played through pain, through adverse conditions; when they were hurt, when they were tired, and when others counted them out. This group of athletes surpassed all expectations; built a firmer foundation for success and earned everyone’s RESPECT! Preparation is key to success and the 2020 team is stronger mentally, and physically, they are prepared to compete. Coach Canning is determined to build us into champions, keeping the same commitment and understanding that no team will work harder than us! There is a saying, “Take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves.” He is doing just that, teaching our athletes to focus on the "little things", the aspects of the game that they directly control. They have control over their hustle, speed, drive and effort. They have control over their attitude, their spirit, their passion, and good sportsmanship. They control their offense and defense, how they line up and execute. When we execute these little things then the scoreboard and the victories will take care of themselves. Champions focus on pushing beyond their limits, drawing energy from untapped reserves of hope, success, effort, preparation, and reaching the finish line! Coach and the staff are working hard

not only building and developing the athlete’s bodies, but working with their minds and hearts to teach them character. They are instilling the attributes of trust, respect, fairness, courage, honor, and most of all, to believe in themselves and in each other. Coach Canning has added to an already talented and versatile coaching staff with new coaches that will bring a lot to the table. Our coaches and athletes have increased the intensity and have worked hard during the off-season both on the field, on camps, and in the weight room in preparation for this season.

Now we need your help! No effort is too small or unimportant. We need your time and talents. We cannot travel this road to success alone. Parents, boosters, volunteers, and fans are all vital. School spirit is the heartbeat of the school and football is the pulse that drives it. The 2020 Football Team lead by our upper classmen are creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm, anticipation, and excitement for the upcoming season, challenging all of us to join in. We still have a very competitive year ahead of us, but with the tremendous time, hard work, and preparation already invested into the overall football program and all of you behind us and believing in us we can anticipate a new and exciting GJHS Football Season. Our goals at George Jenkins include developing character, sportsmanship, self-discipline, teamwork, dedication, confidence, ethics, and leadership skills that will transcend athletics into every aspect of a student-athlete’s life. Parents, you have a major role in developing and influencing your child’s attitude about academics and athletics by the leadership role you take at home, at school, and in the stands. The principles of good sportsmanship - integrity, fairness, and respect - are lifetime values that are taught through athletics and reinforced in the home. With them, the spirit of competition thrives, fueled by honest rivalry, courteous, respectful relations, and graceful acceptance of the results. To our visitors, the George Jenkins Family extends a warm welcome. If we can make your evening more enjoyable, please do not hesitate to ask our staff. In the meantime, in the spirit of friendship and competition – let the game(s) begin!
