WELCOME LAKE OSWEGO FANS
TO THE 2021 FOOTBALL SEASON>>> DEAR LAKERS, I am very honored and privileged to serve as the athletic director at Lake Oswego High School. Thank you for joining us in supporting Lake Oswego Football and Lake Oswego Athletics for the 2021 season. We have a tremendous group of student-athletes and coaches who have been patiently waiting and preparing for this season for many months now. They’re eager to get on the field to continue the tradition of excellence that’s been created over the last 25 years and they’re eager to leave a lasting legacy for not just their team, but their school and community. Interscholastic athletic competition is very special in that every contest offers our student-athletes opportunities to experience success and failure, regardless of the final score. In addition to learning the value of dedication, teamwork, preparation and sportsmanship, we expect our student-athletes to win with humility, lose with grace and do both with dignity. Our Head Football Coach Steve Coury, and his staff embrace this commitment to teaching life-lessons through competition. They value each and every student-athlete and provide them with the opportunity to experience growth, accomplishment and success. Our student-athletes at Lake Oswego strive to be the best they can be each and every day. We coach them to have a growth mindset and to be constantly moving forward and getting better. This is the mindset not only on the playing field, but in the classroom as well, as our student-athletes are always students first.

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FOOTBALL
LAKERS, IT IS SO NICE TO BE BACK ON THE FIELD AND STARTING A NEW SEASON.
The last year and a half has been challenging for everyone and a stressful time for all our Laker families. It’s good to be back in action full time and we hope and pray we will get back to school in a normal fashion. If there are mandates about masks and distance please follow these guidelines so we can continue to play all our games. We suffered a huge lose in our Laker Program with the passing of Coach Brian Bartsch. Coach Bartsch was a pillar in the program and in this community and he will be sorely missed. We will keep his legacy alive here in Laker Nation and he will never be forgotten. I want to thank everyone for the continued support of our program and I hope that it brings you great pride to be a part of it. We have built this program on strong values of Family, love and community and we will continue to build on those principles. The goals for the program do not change from year to year and our motto “Tradition Never Graduates” insures that the players do things the Laker way. We believe that people need to be treated with respect and everyone has a value no matter their role. I hope these same values have spread amongst all of you as we get ready to enjoy another great year of Laker Football. My staff and I are blessed to be a part of this great community and we are looking forward to giving you a team on the field that you can be proud of win or lose. SEE YOU AFTER THE GAME!
GO LAKERS!

2021 LAKE OSWEGO FOOTBALL
Steve Coury // HEAD COACH Coach Coury graduated and played receiver for Lakeridge High School and Oregon State University. He was named an All-American in 1979 and was inducted into the OSU Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. Following college, he played one season with the Ottawa Rough Riders of the CFL. Steve has been coaching for over 32 years; Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, California, WR coach for Portland Breakers of the USFL from 1983 to 1985 (where his father was head coach) and was an assistant football coach at the University of Pittsburgh for three years. In 1992, he was named head football coach here at Lake O. A few of his favorite things include; Country music, eating at Chez Jose, Bairds on B, Jefe & Industry. Coach Coury’s pregame ritual includes taking a 30 minute nap while listening to Neil Diamond. Making a difference in the lives of his players is the most important aspect of coaching. Steve and his beautiful wife Nancy (of 40 years) have 3 kids, Jordan (along with his wife Jewels and their beautiful grandchildren Talon, Hazel & Scout), Abby (son-in-law Ryland) and Stevie.
Jeff Young // INSPIRATION AND MOTIVATION Jeff graduated from Lake Oswego High School in 1980, where he lettered in both football and baseball. He earned all-league honors as a running back and went on to start at the position each of his three seasons at Southern Oregon University. In 1983, Jeff began noticing troubling symptoms which led to an ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) diagnosis in 1984. Given three to five years to live, he joined the Lakers coaching staff 21 years later as Coach of Motivation and Inspiration. In addition to writing a weekly motivational letter to the team, Jeff also mentors individual players and leads a year-round leadership council of players. Jeff is a single father to daughter Priya, a Class of 2007 Lake Oswego High grad. He is also a proud father in law to Priya’s husband; Phillip. Jeff’s first book, Power Principles, came out in late 2014. The book is co-authored by best-selling author and motivational speaker Brian Tracy among others.
Nick Halberg // OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR/QUARTERBACKS Coach Halberg graduated from Lake Oswego High School in 2008 after a lifetime of growing up around the LO football program. He was an all-league wide receiver as a senior. He graduated from Oregon State University in 2012 where he worked in the football video department his first 3 years as an undergraduate. In the 2012 football season, Coach Halberg began his coaching career as a part of Mike Riley’s coaching staff for the Beavers. He spent 3 years coaching in Corvallis, as well as an additional 3 years coaching for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. Off the field, Coach Halberg enjoys spending time with family, playing golf, and playing basketball. He is married to his beautiful wife, Sadie, and they love their dog, Lexi. They are looking forward to their new addition to their family – baby girl in November.
Frank Everhart // CO-DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR/LINEBACKERS Coach Everhart graduated and played football for St. Helens High School and Linfield College. His coaching career consists of; Tigard High (1980-82), Lakeridge High (198393, Lewis & Clark College (1994) and here at LO from 1995 to present. A few of his favorite things are Dick Butkus, NFL football player, hearing the LOHS school song following a Laker victory and eating at Coach Newcs back patio, especially after a Laker win. Coach Frank’s pregame ritual is to find a quiet place, close his eyes and visualize the Lakers making great plays. Over the years, there have been so many great memories; winning the 2011 & 2018 State Championshipsare on the top of the list. The famous 3-way Kansas Plan tiebreaker and the 2 nationally broadcast games vs Jesuit are up there too. All of the special, team building things that the team does including Coach Jeff’s weekly messages, the Thanksgiving reunions (turkey sandwiches on the 50 yard line) make coaching at LO great! Frank is married to his wonderful and talented wife, Julie.

In his years on the coaching staff he has taken on many roles, from coaching freshman football to the varsity defensive line. Chris has been the varsity offensive line coach since the 2011 season. Coaching at Lake Oswego with Coach Coury and his staff has been one of the highlights of Chris’ life. Being a Laker is about so much more than football and Chris is humbled and proud to be able to work with such amazing men to help coach and guide the players who make up this Laker family. When Chris is not coaching or teaching he loves to spend time with his wife Kati and their son's Kian & Carson who are proud supporters of the Lakers!

Bill Hewes // OFFENSIVE LINE/DEFENSIVE LINE/HEAD JV COACH Started my coaching career at LO in 1992 after Coach Coury was hired. I was a very green coach and Coach Coury assured me it would be a great experience and a lot of fun. 30 years later I am still here and enjoying great experiences and having fun. The best part I coach with people I love and adore as well as being part of a program that is so family oriented. The group has been through so much as families do, more of it being good than bad. During all this the program has turned into one of the State’s elite football programs. Looking around and seeing so many of the same men and family members that I was welcomed into so long ago is a great feeling. I am blessed to have been married to my wife, Nicole for the last 31 years and we have two children Haden and Josi both of whom graduated from Lake Oswego and my wife works at the school as well. I am truly going to miss my friend Brian Bartsch this season. Love you Brian.
Greg Lord // DEFENSIVE LINE/ HEAD FRESHMEN COACH Coach Lord brings 50 years of high school football and baseball coaching experience to the Laker staff, this year being his 12th at LOHS. Watching young men grow each day in practice and games as well as teaching them lifelong lessons are aspects of coaching that are important to him. Some of his favorites include; Roger Staubach (pro athlete), listening to Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band and eating at the Ringside West. One of many claims to fame for him is winning State Championships in football and baseball in 1966 as a player and 2012 as a coach. Greg and his wife Christine have been married for 46 years. They have two children: Michael, who is a teacher and coach at Oregon City High School; Colene, who is a Vice- Principal at Forest Grove High School. Greg and Chris are blessed with 7 grandchildren.
Matt Stutes // DEFENSIVE BACKS Matt graduated from Lake Oswego High School in 2007, where he was a four-year letterman as a safety, and first team all-state as a senior. He chose to pursue baseball in college and ended up graduating from Western Oregon University in 2012. This is his 8th year coaching at Lake Oswego splitting his time between JV and Varsity. He believes the best part about coaching at Lake Oswego is the family atmosphere and the great coaches and kids he gets to spend his time with. Matt and his wife, Lauren have two sons; Owen (3), Sterling (6 months) and their dog, Cassius.
Stevie Coury // WIDE RECEIVERS Stevie Coury graduated from Lake Oswego High School in 2012, where he was a two-year letterman as a WR, earning first team all-league and first team all-state as a senior. He was a captain of the 2011 State Champion team, bringing the school its first state title. He graduated from Portland State in 2017, where he played football for three years. He has coached at LO for three years and is very excited to continue coaching alongside his Dad and the rest of the staff. His favorite memory of playing football was winning a State Championship his senior year. He enjoys being around the players and watching them succeed. Off the field, he enjoys traveling and being around good friends.

In the semi-final game against Beaverton, he scored 3 touchdowns, a career game high. JT continued playing football for 2 more years while at Western Oregon, finishing there in 2010 with a BA in Exercise Science. His favorite football player is Chris Carter, he enjoys Country music and likes to eat at Senor Taco. Football is a “family affair” for Jordan (playing for, and now coaching with his Dad, as well as coaching his younger brother Stevie) and being able to teach life lessons through this great sport are important to him. Jordan and his wife Jewels, have three children; Talon (4), Hazel (2) and Scout (4 months).
Justin Wojciechowski // SPECIAL TEAMS/LINEBACKERS
Taylor Brown // OFFENSIVE LINE/DEFENSIVE LINE A lifelong Laker, Coach Brown graduated in 2006 as a team captain with three varsity letters and various All-League & All-State awards. After high school he would find his way to Southern Oregon University where he fulfilled his role as a backup left tackle, and later he would join the local semi-pro football team the "Portland Raiders". Playing for the Raiders reignited his love for football and competition, and this would lead him to reach out to Lake Oswego head coach Steve Coury. Entering his sixth year as an assistant offensive and defensive line coach, he is as excited as ever to get back to work and teach the next generation of Lakers about our winning tradition. "Getting to work alongside my mentors, teaching the thing I love, it's the best feeling."
Jack Lomax // OFFENSIVE ASSISTANT Coach Jack Lomax played quarterback for Lake Oswego during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons under most of the current staff. He won the 2008-09 Gatorade Oregon Football Player of the year as a senior. Lomax went to play quarterback under Mike Riley and the Oregon State Beavers from 2009-2013. He has taken a break from football but is excited to be back and coaching his first year with his former high school coaching staff and players. Off the field, Lomax enjoys being around friends and family. He loves music, television, movies, sports, games, and anything outdoors.

LAKER NATION LOST COACH BRIAN BARTSCH ON JULY 17TH, 2021.
Brian Bartsch joined the Lake Oswego football family in 2004. He spent his first three years as the freshman offensive coordinator and in 2007, he took over the same position for the JV team. In 2009, Coach Bartsch assumed the head coaching duties for the JV program; a position he held in addition to being a varsity offensive assistant. Bartsch’s idol was his grandpa, Jim Porter, who coached high school football in Oregon for over 35 years. “My grandpa’s philosophy of using football as a tool to teach life lessons and to help mold young men is identical to Steve Coury’s. Coaching at Lake Oswego was a natural fit for me”, Bartsch stated. Brian’s former coach and current Lake Oswego defensive coordinator Frank Everhart introduced him to the Laker family. Bartsch was a two-year starting cornerback for Everhart at Lakeridge High School in the early 90’s. Bartsch earned a BS in Journalism from the University of Oregon in 1998 and Masters in Teaching from Concordia University in 2008. Brian taught Physical Education here at Lake Oswego High.

OUR COMMUNITY
OUR FAMILY
Laker football is visible not only on the field but off of it as well. We participate in assisting with the Festival of the Arts with tear down after the event and have served meals and provided clean-up for the Potluck in the Park at the Blanchet House in Portland. Each year, our players lead a kids camp to help promote the sport of football and can be seen on the sidelines cheering on future Lakers at youth sports events throughout the year. This community involvement has helped create lasting memories from being Friday Night ball boys to Varsity players years later.
“This COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT has helped create lasting memories...”
LES DARBY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
Les Darby was a true Laker. He was involved in the sports community coaching his two daughters in soccer and became an instant Laker football fan when he was introduced to the program by former AD Dick Curtis. Les volunteered his time to the program and his contributions went above the call of duty without wanting any recognition. He was a “role” player that wanted to do whatever he could to make things better for the “big picture”. He was selfless, kind, considerate, and cared deeply about the kids and the program. We recognize kids each year that have the same Les Darby winning attitude and commitment to the “Laker Way”. 2003 2004
