WELCOME FALCONS FANS

TO THE 2021 FOOTBALL SEASON>>> WELCOME ALUMNI, PARENTS, STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO THE 2021 SCRIPPS RANCH HIGH SCHOOL FALL SPORTS SEASON! IT IS DEFINITELY NOT THE SEASON WE WERE EXPECTING. Even though we have a limited number of spectators, we still have the most supportive and positive crowd. The coaching staffs have committed numerous hours since last spring to truly prepare student-athletes who are connected to their school and community. With ever changing regulations and guidelines, the coaching staff has strived to keep the team connected. As fans, please respect all of the hard work and dedication put in by our athletes and model good sportsmanship in the stands and social media. We are thrilled that our athletes get a season and do not want to jeopardize it in any way. Please abide by all COVID related regulations such as limited spectators, social distancing and wearing your mask. Thank you for your ongoing support of Scripps Ranch High School.

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FOOTBALL

WELCOME #FALCONFOOTBALLFAMILY AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO THE 2021 SCRIPPS RANCH HIGH SCHOOL “SPRING” FOOTBALL SEASON. WE’RE GLAD YOU’RE HERE.

After 465 days, several rallies, hundreds of letters, thousands of emails and posts, and a court case, we’re finally back. I want to start by thanking our staff for volunteering their time for over eight (8) months to keep our kids engaged. A special thanks to the parents who kept bringing the kids out and most important, the team. The kids who never gave up, the kids who worked out for months and months without knowing if there would ever be a season. While we all wish we never had to live through a pandemic that devastated so many families, some close to us, we should all be proud of the resilient, dedicated, hard working kids who found a way to get through it all, despite the restrictions and challenges. Our children have grown through this experience and we can only hope they will all be better for it. With a shortened season, we must forgo our normal five game non-league season and the potential for CIF playoffs. Fortunately, we will compete for another City League Championship against Patrick Henry HS on March 19th, Kearny HS on April 2nd, Serra HS on April 9th and we will end our season with Senior Night on April 16th against University City HS. And we can’t forget the start of the spring season with our victory over Mira Mesa HS, our rivals from across Interstate 15. The win was the first time in school history Scripps Ranch was victorious over the Marauders two years in a row. It is also a glimpse into the future of Scripps Ranch football where old habits are broken and new traditions are created. We are grateful for your support. You are an invaluable part of the #FalconFootballFamily.

R E T UR N I N G P L AY E R S

2021 SCRIPPS RANCH FOOTBALL

HERE ARE THE RETURNING STARTERS FROM THE RECORD-BREAKING 2019 SEASON; A HIGHLY RANKED, UNDEFEATED (12-0) TEAM HEADING INTO OUR FIRST CIF-SAN DIEGO CHAMPIONSHIP. Luke Durkin (Sr) - 6’0” 180 lbs, 4.3 GPA, Team Captain Luke's previous season was memorable (12-1). Both his stats and highlights were great, but he should be most proud leading his team to it's first league championship in 25 year, and the schools first undefeated regular season. Luke is the leader of the team and has led the program and cultural turnaround over the last three years. Durkin will continue his academic and football career at Davidson College (D1-FCS) in North Carolina after being an exemplary student at Scripps Ranch High School. Durkin was also a 2019 All-City League, 2019 SRHS Leadership Award, 2019 Union-Tribune All-Academic Team honoree. - Strong arm, accurate, intelligent, able to read defenses, make adjustments, find opportunities on the field and watching film and is great on the move. A leader, a workhorse, driven, dedicated and focused. A role model. He has a quarterback pedigree (IQ, technique, leadership) and presence that led the team to the most successful season in school history.

Nicholas Gardinera (Sr.) - 5’10” 200 lbs, 4.0 GPA, Team Captain A third year varsity starter is coming back after an impressive 2019 season. During that amazing season, Gardinera was the 2019 All-City - Player of the Year (Offense), 2019 All-CIF (SB Live), 2019 SRHS Offensive Player of the Year, 2019. California Player of the Week, 2019 Union-Tribune All-Academic Team. - Top 5 (#4) c/o '21 RBs in Southern California, Top 3 (#2) CIF-San Diego (2019) and Top 10 (#8 - MaxPreps) in California, with 1,783 rushing yards, 24 TDs, 198 receiving yards, 2 TDs. 1,981 all-purpose yards as a junior. As a sophomore starter Gardinera ran for 1,006+ yards. Great vision, lateral jump cut, quickness through the hole. Elusive and hard to bring down. Strong, with great hands out of backfield.

Ethan Nicholas (Sr.) - 6’0” 185 lbs, 4.25 GPA, Team Captain In addition to being a great student, Ethan is an aggressive, hard-hitting, smash-mouth run filling safety with a nose for the ball (team leader in tackles and INTs in his sophomore/junior seasons). He is also an incredibly athletic, dynamic offensive weapon that is explosive at QB, RB and slot receiver. I am not a fan of two-way players, but Ethan has to be on the field at all times for us," said Head Coach Marlon Gardinera. He will be a differencemaker at the next level and even better STUDENT/Athlete at a great school.

Riley Merrigan (Sr.) - 6’3” 190 lbs, 4.86 GPA, Team Captain Mr. Riley Merrigan is hands down the best student in the #FalconFootballFamily. Boasting a 4.86 GPA and a commit to attend and play football at the University of Washington - St. Louis. Merrigan is a very athletic, two-sport (football/basketball) athlete with the determination, commitment, and work ethic to make it to the next level and be a difference-maker. In his second varsity season, he had a great year in what turned into the best season in the school's history. That included being selected for the 2019 All-City League (1st Team) and Defensive Player of the Year on a highly ranked defensive squad that allowed less than eight (8) points per game. Our defense was the foundation of our undefeated regular season and a trip to the CIF-San Diego Section Championship game. According to Coach Gardinera, “The only thing better than having a great linebacker is having a smart one that is all-in. He reads his keys, reacts and gets where he is supposed to be. If everyone had the discipline and smarts this kid has, they too would be there every time the ball is and have the ball thrown to them routinely.”

Ruben “Big Ru” Garcia (Jr.) - 6’3” 280 lbs, 3.00 GPA, Team Captain Big Ru is only a junior after starting at left tackle in the memorable season of first. Strong, athletic and determined, Ruben will lead the 2021/22 team as the only third year starter.
