WELCOME PANTHERS FANS A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINC IPAL>>>
Welcome to our fall/spring sports season at South Medford High School! Our student-athletes and coaches have been working hard as they prepare to represent our school and our communityon the field and on the court throughout the state of Oregon. If you’ve been around Medford for a few years, you know that our athletic programs are built upon a proud tradition and welook forward to seeing you in the stands for Volleyball, Football, Soccer and Cross Country as we continue to build on that tradition. While you are here, don’t forget to appreciate the hard work and dedication of our outstanding Cheerleaders and our exceptional Marching Band. I think you will be impressed both by the character and commitment to excellence of South Medford students at every level. Thank you to all of our sponsors for their support of athletic programs in Medford and for purchasing ads in the Gameday Media guide you have in your hand. We hope you will patronize the businesses and services advertised here and let them know how much we all appreciate their support. Thank you for being here - your presence means a lot to our students, coaches and game officials. Please enjoy their accomplishments and play a role in the success of our programs by being a positive and supportive fan.

Welcome to the 2020-21 school year. This a fun and exciting time of year as our students and athletes head back to the field and also back into the classroom. As the athletic director, I am very proud of our student athletes and the effort that they put in to their sport as well as the classroom. It is these times that our athletes (and their parents) will remember and cherish for many years to come. I would like to thank all the parents, teachers, administration, and the community at large for their generous support of our athletes and our Panther programs. We acknowledge all that you do for our school and for that we say “thank you” Thank you for attending today’s contest and for supporting our student-athletes. We hope that you will enjoy your time at our event. Finally, let us all remember that the game is for our athletes and that good sportsmanship is reflected in our behavior. No matter what role you are playing (parent, official, or coach) we know that we are all doing our best to give our athlete’s a positive experiment. Please give our athletes, our coaches, and our officials the respect they deserve! I wish all of our teams this school year the best of luck, GO PANTHERS!

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FOOTBALL
2021 SOUTH MEDFORD FOOTBALL
WELCOME TO THE EXTENDED SEASON OF 2020; spring football in 2021! It's been quite a year in so many ways but here we are a year
and a half later! For all everyone has been through, protocols that have been followed and adjusted; practices that have been planned and cancelled; we are excited to get to the playing field!
Whether we are able to have fans, parents or students in the stands, this modified season is a tribute to all those who have sacrificed their time and energy to allow our kids an opportunity to play, especially the seniors! So the spring season is dedicated to our seniors and their families. We are grateful the governor, OHA, OSAA, state, county and school district officials have tirelessly worked during this pandemic to give not just football but all student athletes an opportunity for extra curricular activities for the school year 2020-21. Lets celebrate the kids! GO PANTHERS!!

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE VOLLEYBALL
2021 SOUTH MEDFORD FOOTBALL
PANTHER VOLLEYBALL ALONG WITH ALL OUR STUDENT ATHLETES HAVE ENDURED A GREAT DEAL THIS 2020-21 SEASON.
We have come out stronger for all the effort that has been put in by our athletes. Our players began with zoom workouts last summer, then into pods in the gym, then playing outdoor volleyball in the sand, then indoor volleyball with masks, then everything with masks, then limited 6 person pods, then straight into tryouts and season competitions. That makes for a great deal of flexibility, planning and diligence from players, families, and coaching staff. The focus this short season is to take advantage of every opportunity we have to play together and to compete for the SOC conference championship. With the many changes this year we strive to attain a number of positive 1st for our players and the program. With 7 Seniors in the program we find ourselves daily looking for ways to honor there the journey and to squeeze out every lasting moment. In addition, we are all so thankful for the support and time that our SMHS administration, state, county and school district, OSAA, OHA, the governor our community and a multitude of others who worked to get us into a High School sports seasons this school year. GO PANTHERS!

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE BOYS SOCCER
2021 SOUTH MEDFORD FOOTBALL
THE SOUTH MEDFORD BOYS SOCCER PROGRAM WELCOMES YOU TO A NEW YEAR. This year will have new challenges for everyone. This year our varsity team will have 3 returning starters. Our coaching staff will strive to bring out the best of every player who commits to our program; and we hope that our overall performance will meet or exceed personal and team expectations.
This will be my 17th year with the program. For the last 17 years, I have spent many hours on the field as J. V. Coach and in the school district working and learning from coaches, players and parents. For the 2021-2021 season, we will focus on improving in all aspects compared to last season. Last season the team was able to finish third in league and advance to the 1st round of the OSAA playoffs, finishing with an overall record of 8-5-2. Our philosophy will be to develop players that fit around four qualities known as the “TIPS Model”. Personality and Speed are generally inherent assets possessed naturally by players. Technique and Insight however can be further developed through long-term development. These traits will help each athlete who is inspired to continue to the next level. The team’s goal this year will be to compete for the SOC conference championship. We look forward in working with you as a critical part of the whole team effort. I want to reach out and ask for support from our parents, spectators, athletic department and administration. I hope to see you all out there in support of our young student athletes!

Claudio Villa >> VARSITY HEAD COACH Claudio Villa, born in Morelia, Mexico, spent his early years playing street soccer until he moved to the United States at age 11. Claudio never played organized soccer until he entered his Freshman year at North Medford High School in 1995. There, he played 2 years for the Boys JV Soccer team and 2 years for the Varsity team, earning the Most Valuable Defensive Player award during the JV seasons. Attended both Rogue Community College and Southern Oregon University from 2003-2008 where he played competitivesoccer with both SOU (club team) and La Liga del Valle Select Team. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a Concentration in Spanish. Claudio was recruited by fellow coach Dave Kaufman in the school year 2004/2005 to be his JV coach for South Medford High School. He spent the following 10 years learning from Dave Kaufman where he had 10 very successful seasons with the Junior Varsity team. For the last 2 years, Claudio became the Varsity Assistant under Josh Desmond who also became part of the program in the 2004/2005 season. Claudio has also been a volunteer for the Medford United Futbol Club for the last 17 years or so. Claudio has been preparing all these years by taking courses from professional clubs such as Monarcas Morelia (Mexico), Ajax, PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands), FC Escola Barcelona, La Masia Barcelona and TOVO Academy Barcelona (Spain). This will be Claudio’s 4th year as the Boys Varsity Soccer Head Coach. He was named Coach of the Year for the Southwest Conference for the season 2018-2019 after finishing with a record of 9 wins, 3 losses and 3 ties, earning the 2nd seed in conference. His favorite team is Barcelona and his favorite player is Lionel Messi. “If you are not having fun it makes no sense.” (Johan Cruyff)
Matt Soper >> VARSITY ASSISTANT Coach Soper has been coaching soccer since 1996. Matt has coached at the club level as well as the high school level. He helped create a local soccer club in 2009 which is now one of the feeder clubs for South Medford High School. Matt is a great asset to our soccer program here at South.

Josh Wallace >> VARSITY HEAD COACH This is my 16th year as the Head Cross Country Coach. I was fortunate to attend and graduate from South Medford High School in 1994. Coaches Bill and Sandy Rowan helped me win two conference championships and make it to the State Meet all four years of my high school career. The Rowan’s instilled in me a love for running in general and for cross country specifically and it’s something that I’m passionate about passing on to others. Since 2007 our boy’s and girl’s teams have made a combined 11 trips to the State Championships (The top 3 teams from the Conference Championships go to State) and we are always looking to build on the legacy of those past teams.

>>A MESSAGE FROM THE CHEER COACH The 2021-21 South Medford Panther Cheerleaders will once again be a co-ed squad and we couldn't be more excited. The Varsity cheerleaders just returned from training with staff from the Universal Cheerleading Association where they won awards and shared our Panther Pride by impressing top schools from California. Additionally, our three seniors can’t wait to start our very popular Mini Cubs program; where future Panther cheerleaders get the opportunity to dance, stunt, jump and tumble as part of our Panther Cheer community. Returning for her 14th year as head coach, is 2017 Golden Pear winner Loni Strong. Once owner and choreographer for the nationally recognized dance/ cheer program, Dance Energy, it's no surprise the South Medford cheer program has continued to improve, entertain and become a goal for many future Panther athletes. We are also very fortunate to have Megan Rasmussen return once again as assistant coach. Megan has been a part of the South Cheer program since she became a Panther Cheerleader in 2002. After graduating she has volunteered whenever possible and is thrilled to return as part of this year’s coaching team. Megan has a wonderful husband Mikyl, adorable son Quinn, a Great Dane named Mosby, and added a sweet baby girl named Charlie Jane to her family this summer. Your South Medford Cheerleaders look forward to leading the crowds, supporting our teams and experiencing VICTORY every time we meet on Panther Territory!!!
