WELCOME TITAN FANS
TO THE 2021 FOOTBALL SEASON>>> THE WEST SALEM HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT DURING THESE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES. It is difficult to believe that we’re playing high school football in the spring, but here we are. One thing that has impressed me a great deal is the resiliency that the players and coaches have displayed this season. They planned for the worst-case scenario but prepared and hoped for the best – and now that preparation is paying off. Working so hard without any guarantee of a favorable outcome on the other end can surely test one’s resolve. The coaches and players have worked very hard to get us to this point, but they couldn’t have done it without the continued support of our sponsors, our parents, our Athletic Booster Club, and the necessary staff, including officials, that are needed work the games. They say that sometimes, “It takes a village …” and that statement is ever so true today as we prepare to watch some high school football. Again, we would like to thank you for your support of all high school athletes and performers right now as they do their best to represent their family, their team and their school. This includes our cheerleaders and drumline, too. We couldn’t make this happen without all of you, and we’re greatly appreciative of your continued support!

HEAD COACH >>A MESSAGE FROM THE FOOTBALL
WELCOME TO THE 2021 WEST SALEM HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SEASON. During the Covid situation, we have worked hard to keep the players and coaches spirits up and look forward to getting on the field this Spring.
Our goal is to build and improve upon an athletic program that enriches our students through hard work, cooperation, and enthusiasm. We are constantly impressed by the dedication shown by our players and cannot wait to see what they are capable of not only during tonight’s game, but into the future as well. On behalf of the football program, I would also like to thank GameDay Media and the local business sponsors for their help in supporting our efforts in creating such a high-quality program. Please consider supporting our sponsors with your business and be sure to thank them for supporting West Salem Football. Lastly, to those who have supported us in the past and to those who are supporting us now, to our sponsors, our community, our administration, our families and friends, we say STAY HEALTHY – WEAR A MASK – SOCIAL DISTANCE – WASH YOUR HANDS, THANK YOU!
GO TITANS!
2018 SEASON: YEAR IN REVIEW The 2018 Titan football season opened with an old out of league foe, Lake Oswego. Both teams came into the game with a top 10 preseason ranking. After an opening quarter that ended in a 7-7 tie, there was a palpable feeling of a great season opener, but the Titans were still working out some of the kinks. There were flashes of what they were capable of, but ultimately the Titans could not make it translate into sustained success. Although the game was lost, an early test against a great team made apparent what areas of their game needed to improve. The Titans would have one week to make the adjustments and prepare for their first league opponent. The Bend High School Lava Bears have a long tradition of excellence on the football field. While this Bend team had some talent, they would not have enough fire power to keep up with a West Salem team that was thirsty to right the wrongs from a week before. After a year of acting as backup and playing a primary role on defense, senior quarterback Simon Thompson finally got a chance to show what he was capable of offensively. Over the course of 3 and a half quarters of work, Thompson would throw 5 TD passes, 4 of those connecting with senior speed merchant, Anthony Gould (he would also add a KOR TD for good measure). Defensively, the squad was anchored by defending Greater Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Alex Hurlburt. Hurlburt, a Senior defensive end/linebacker would collect 12 tackles, 6 tackles for loss and 1 sack on his way to being named Defensive Player of the Game. After the 56-27 drubbing of the Lava Bears, the Titans looked ahead to a meeting with familiar perennial playoff foe, Grant High School.
September 14th, 2018 marked a special occasion for the Titan football program. It was the first week in Titan history that all three levels played different schools. The Freshman program took on Oregon City, the JV hosted and beat Jesuit, in quite possibly one of the best JV games in history, while the Varsity squad traveled to the friendly confines of the Marshall campus in Portland to take on Grant High School. Not firing on all cylinders early the Titans took a 19-14 lead into halftime, but came out swinging with more than a few four down stops on D and 21 points to finish with a 40-22 win. Senior running back Jordan Whitaker would score two touchdowns on the ground, the first of which would give the Titans the lead that they never looked back from. Simon Thompson would throw two TD’s and showcased his running ability with a 76 yard fourth quarter run. Proving why is who he is, Alex Hurlburt was once again named DPOG with 17 tackles. The Titans, now 2-1, would savor the victory briefly as preparations for the Sheldon Irish began almost immediately. The Irish have long been a thorn in the side for West Salem. However, much like week 1, it would provide a great measure for how far the team has come in four weeks. Some collateral damage from the previous week’s victory were injuries to some key components. Senior All League linebacker/TE Micah Pugh and Senior All State Corner Stanley Green were both held out of the contest with injuries. The game would prove to be a tale of two halves. After some missteps, the Titans would go into halftime down 35-0. Filling in for the injured Pugh, back up Senior Linebacker Noah Franco would play brilliantly anchoring the defense in a second half that saw both teams trade scores going 21-21 for the half, ultimately ending in a 56-21 defeat
for the Titans. Simon Thompson threw TD’s to Gould (43 yards) and Senior WR Jamal McMurrin (16 yards). The loss was indeed disheartening, but despite not playing anywhere near their potential, the Titans were still 2-2 and ranked 12th in the state. In a potential rebound match, the Titans would head north to face the aptly named Beavers of Beaverton High School. In what was billed to be a game that West Salem was supposed to handle with ease, it proved to be anything but. The Beavers came out swinging and jumped to an early 28-0 lead. The Titan defense was far from porous, but the Beavers were making more plays when they needed to. Anthony Gould would return his second kickoff return of the season for a TD and would add two TD catches. The second of which put West Salem within 2 points with just under two minutes remaining in the contest. West Salem would recover an onside kick and march down the field to within potential game winning field goal range only to have a penalty move them back. Well out of range of even the greatest kickers leg, the Beaver defense would hold stunning the West Salem faithful with a 35-33 victory. Harkening back to his roots as a defensive player, Simon Thompson would be named DPOG after coming up with 4 tackles, 1 sack and an interception. Although it was a tough loss to swallow, the Titans were still 2-0 in league play and looking forward to four games against conference opponents. The Titans would start the four week league finale with crosstown rival South Salem. West Salem would come back across the bridge with their first shutout of the year defeating the Saxons 25-0. The following week would take the Titans over the Cascades for the programs first ever game against the Mountain View Cougars of Bend. Simon Thompson would use the game to entrench himself atop the list of top QB’s in the conference with a stat line straight out of a video game. He would go 23-29 passing for 475 yards and 6 total TD’s (5 passing, 1 rushing). Three of those TD’s would go to Gould and two to McMurrin. After another
tough loss to McNary of Keizer and a regular season win against Sprague, the Titans were in a position to host a first round playoff game against Southridge of Beaverton. While the regular season did not go exactly as planned, the second season was upon them. The Titans were the 15 seed going into the first round of the playoffs barely securing a first round home game, and they would make the most of it. Hosting the 18 seed Southridge Skyhawks, the Titans wasted no time reminding the rest of the state that they were not to be overlooked. Anthony Gould would score 4 TD’s (2 rushing, 2 receiving) while Senior WR/LB Gideon Giles would catch two of his own. In an effort to keep the ball away from some of the Titan Speed, the Skyhawks thought it would be a better idea to try and kick the ball to Micah Pugh to open the second half. It was quickly realized on the Southridge sideline that this in fact was not a good idea, as he returned it for a touchdown. The Titan offense would score 57 (their highest of the season) en route to the victory. For their efforts they were rewarded with a trip to take on the #2 seeded Clackamas Cavaliers. Clackamas was the defending state champ and boasted a 25 game win streak that spanned the previous season. There were a lot of things that could be said about this Titan team, but one thing that no one could say is that they were easily intimidated. A season often builds to a crescendo in the playoffs when everything starts to come together, and that is what happened on this particular Friday night. The Titans played well in all facets, offensively putting together drives that would culminate in two scores. Defensively the Titans would hold the reigning champs to 24 points, which would be enough to garner the victory. There are few times that ending your season on a loss can be positive, but this was one of those times. It was team football, and it was good football, unfortunately someone has to end up on the losing side and this time it was the Titans.
The Titans would finish the year 6-5 and 2nd in the Mountain Valley Conference. Simon Thompson was named MVC Offensive Player of the Year and Alex Hurlburt repeated as Defensive Player of the Year. Anthony Gould was named Special Teams Return Man of the year. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
The Titan Football Family has a history of former players finding their way back up the hill to help out the program in a variety of different capacities. Two of those legacies are Trey Lindekugel (2016) and Justin Copeland (2012). Trey and Justin, both licensed trainers, have graciously donated their time and energy to take on the strength portion of the Titan Football Summer Strength and Conditioning program. When asked about coming back to help, Justin had this to say,” As soon as I left the program I knew one day I would return. I didn’t know how, or what I would do but I knew. Shortly after beginning training, I sat down with Coach Stanley to ask how I could get involved. What the guys do up in the weight room directly affects what happens on the field. In a successful S&C (strength and conditioning) program you see athletes get stronger and faster while decreasing the likelihood of non-contact and contact injuries. My role is to help facilitate that.” Trey would take a slightly different path, starting out helping coach on the field before transitioning full time to the summer program, “I had a blast helping out on the field, and when I wasn’t out there I was in the weight room making sure things were dialed on that end. I continued to come back every summer since I graduated, but have since transitioned to just the weight room/strength and conditioning side of things only as that’s really my forte now and what I love to do.” The Titan Football program has always been about developing young people of character above anything else. One of the main reasons that alumni enjoy coming back is the family atmosphere that Coach Stanley and his staff have worked to create around the program, “Family over everything. It was definitely a grind practicing and training just about all year long for 4 years, but knowing that the guys next to me were doing the same thing made it all worth it. To this day, many of my brothers on the field are still some of my best friends and have never left my side, and I can say the same for all the coaches. I am extremely thankful for everyone I met and played with/for and it truly is a
family!” Said Lindekugel, Copeland would add, “When we say ‘Family’ we’re not joking. Being apart of the program really feels like being apart of the family. Some of us even refer to Coach Jeff Miller as ‘Dad’ whenever we see him. A few of the guys I played with even stood next to me on my wedding day.” Friday nights have fostered a lot of memories for a lot of Titan Football players over the years. And while game nights are the culmination, there are also a lot of memories made leading up to Fridays, or memories that don’t have do with the game per se. In reminiscing about some of his fondest memories as a player, Justin had this to say, “One of my first memories of being a part of the program was the first time I learned what a gasser was. 200 yards of character buildin’, butt whoopin’ fun over and over and over again. However, my favorite memory has nothing to do with the game itself, but a tradition that still stands today. As a man of faith, praying on the 40 yard line in honor of Landon Kuenzi meant a lot to me. I didn’t know him personally, but the impact he had on the program and people is incredible.” When asked about his favorite specific Friday night memory, there was little hesitation, “Coach Stanley smashing the pumpkin. Those who were there know what I’m talking about!” In discussing his first memory of being a Titan, Trey would dive a little farther back, “Before I was a player, I remember going to the Youth Football Camps every year and Coach Vandy hooting and hollering at us to “go fast” and that’s stuck with me ever since.” As a player, Trey was known for doling out some big time hits on defense. Appropriately some of his fondest memories are of that same thing, “My senior year when we played Mcminnville, their quarterback came up the middle really low at the goal line and I knew he was going to score, but I also knew that he was going to have to earn it and I got as low as I could to meet him halfway. I remember getting my right shoulder just under his shoulder with a loud pop and immediately hearing a whistle as a flag went up. He scored and I ended up getting a personal foul, at which time I heard Coach Stanley lose it,and I thought
he was mad at me, only to hear him exclaim to the ref that it was a clean hit and I remember being both extremely relieved and satisfied with it-especially when I was met by a hyped up Coach Miller at the sideline. What sticks out most about that was not the hit itself, but mostly how every single coach on our sideline had my back and I think that’s a great representation of what the program is all about to this day.” Like most of those who come through the Titan Football program, football ended for Trey and Justin ended with high school. Trey was set to play football at Pacific University, but a severe shoulder injury in the Les Schwab Bowl would prevent that and he would ultimately focus on the training aspect of athletics. Trey is currently a competitive powerlifter and personal trainer/strength coach in Forest Grove. In regards to how being a part of the Titan Football Family prepared him for life after football, Trey had this to say, “Playing football at West definitely helped prepare me for the adversities I’ve faced and played a huge role in making me who I am today. Now I always strive to pass on the many principles I was taught to my clients and the players coming in!” Justin began his journey back to West via Oregon State, where he would graduate with a BS in Kinesiology in 2016. After a summer internship in Portland he got a job as a personal trainer at Physiq Fitness. He is currently the Master Trainer at Physiq Fitness. On January 25th, 2019 he married his wife Meredith, they also recently bough a home in south Salem. In regards to preparation for life after football, Justin had this to say,”Titan Football and its coaches helped model what I wanted the rest of my life to look like. Nothing is given, and everything is earned. I built a lot of my core values that I carry into my own family during my time as a player.”
One other important aspect of having alumni around is the advice they get to dispel on current players, a living legacy can be a powerful role model. Justin and Trey are a great example of this. In regards to what he’d like to pass on to current players, Justin had this to offer, “Integrity. The definition of integrity is to do the right thing when nobody's watching. To have a moral compass that will never waiver in any situation. Have integrity in every aspect of your life.” On a follow up question of what kind of advice he would offer to current players, Justin did not mince words, “Enjoy it while it lasts, you will miss it every day when it’s over!” Trey had similar feelings when reflecting on the program, “I have seen players from all over, and witnessed how a lot of other programs operate and I truly believe we have something special in West Salem. The foundation we’ve created and the values that the coaches instill to every player are priceless and definitely aren’t everywhere. I am a better person for playing Titan Football and I know every player that makes it through will be too, which is why I do my best to always give back when I can!” His final piece of advice for current players? “Don’t be afraid to step up. There will be times playing when you know something is going to hurt or that you’re at a disadvantage but everyone else is counting on you to stay tough (both mentally and physically) and find a way to get the job done. At the end of the day true leaders don’t need to be asked to step up and everyone remembers the tough ones who made sacrifices for the team. Other than that, just soak up as much as you can and enjoy it because there’s really nothing else like it and it goes by too fast!” Thank you, Trey and Justin for your continued support of the Titan Football Family!
