wellness reimagined VALUE-ALIGNED GOALS

When we approach the new year, we often set new goals that affect our everyday life, like financial, physical fitness, and career goals. Sometimes these goals are a giant leap from how we are currently living and we find ourselves struggling to stay committed. Before goal-setting this year, we invite you to first spend time thinking about what you truly value and find most important. Write these values down and circle a few that you’d like to prioritize this year. Then, spend time setting your goals based on your prioritized values. Start small and focus on daily tasks that feel natural and attainable. When you are able to connect your values to your goals, you are more motivated to work towards them each day.

In the new year, we often seek out new physical fitness goals. Sometimes these goals aren’t aligned with what our body and mind need or aren’t the types of workouts we enjoy doing. One way to revisit your physical fitness goals is to try new styles of workouts and find one that you look forward to doing each day. obé fitness is an online fitness app that offers classes varying in style, type, and intensity, so that you can sample different types of classes to find a workout that feels good to you and suits your unique needs. The more you look forward to something each day, the more likely you are to continue doing it. Join us as we dive deeper into How to Want to Workout at our Monthly Workshop on January 25th.

LET’S EXPLORE

HOW TO ENJOY WORK MORE Do you ever dread getting out of bed and popping on your webcam for work? Maybe you’ve just been having a hard time getting through a particular part of your job recently. Work dread is real. In fact, a recent study of over 1000 individuals found that 81% of us experience dread when we think of the work week to come. Interestingly, this isn’t necessarily because we dislike our work. Many factors contribute to work stress, including the desire to perform well at a job we love. In this article, we’ll explore some of the reasons we experience work dread, and what we can do about it. We invite you to discover how you view work and set a goal to enjoy work more. Yes, we believe it’s possible to enjoy work. Studies show that people who enjoy their work are happier, more productive, and have better relationships in and out of work. The average American spends 1/3 of their lives working. There is a good reason to want to enjoy it more! So what’s the secret sauce? Well, we don’t believe there’s one perfect recipe, but we do believe there’s a few things you can do to check in on your relationship with work and begin to enjoy it more. We invite you to explore these common feelings around work and find one that resonates.

SCENARIO: “I DREAD THE TASKS THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR.” WHY THIS HAPPENS: You may not be spending a majority of your time working to your strengths, which can lead to discontentment and lead you to feel unfulfilled in your work. Consider what comes natural to you and what you feel your most prominent skills are. If you are unsure, try using this tool to discover them. Now, take a look at your responsibilities at work. Are you using these strengths? Or is most of your time spent using your less prominent skills? WHAT YOU CAN DO: Spend more of your time at work using your strongest skills. Maybe this looks like having a conversation with your supervisor about aligning your current role to these strengths. Or maybe there is a new role open in your company that better suits your unique skillset. Stay open to new projects and volunteer to contribute if you see an opportunity to use these skills. When we work to our strengths we can develop a greater sense of impact, leaving us feeling more fulfilled in our role.

SCENARIO: “I FEEL OVERWHELMED BY THE AMOUNT OF WORK AHEAD OF ME.” WHY THIS HAPPENS: When you think about the week or day ahead, you may feel a flight of anxiety kick in. Research shows that individuals may experience this feeling even if they enjoy their work and have a good relationship with their boss. Why is this? You may lean towards a high-achiever work style that likes to go above and beyond at every task, or maybe you carry substantial responsibility at the company and feel it is difficult to complete all that you are tasked with in a certain amount of time. WHAT YOU CAN DO: One way to help alleviate some of this pressure is to automate tasks that need to be completed daily or weekly. You can use a tool like Zapier to save you time during the day and allow for more freedom in your schedule. It also acts as a safety net to ensure these recurring tasks don’t fall through the cracks - giving you more time and peace of mind.

SCENARIO: “I DON'T FEEL INSPIRED BY OR CONNECTED TO MY WORK.” WHY THIS HAPPENS: Your work may be

heavily task-driven, or you may have previously viewed work as a way to “just pay the bills.”

WHAT YOU CAN DO: We invite you to take

a moment to think of WHY you show up each day, whether virtually or in-person. It could be to live a travel-filled lifestyle filled with new experiences, or to save up for a family dream home. Post a visual reminder of your why at your workspace. This could look like a family photo at your desk or a post-it with your why written down. This small reminder can help create a connection to your work that may have not existed before.

. . .

IN CONCLUSION

At its best, work can bring us a deep sense of meaning and fulfillment, at its worst it can feel like a barrier to happiness. As we enter into the new year, remember that even at the best job, work dread is normal. Taking the time to understand and shift our relationship to that stress can make all the difference in our work, our confidence, and our happiness.
