Gogi Saroj Pal
They say 'Let the history judge the work of Art'. I am curious to know, who is writing the history & who will be writing the history of Art? I have explored creative visual imagery in numbers of directions. independence, Thought of compiling this book is to register the correct dates of the starting point of these creative visual directions in Contemporary Indian Art . Gogi Saroj Pal
This book ‘Kamdhenu - Wish fulling Cow& Other Sculpture’became possible with help of Ved Nayar, Gogi Saroj Pal, Rekha Sharma, Ruchika Sharma & Sahil Sharma.

Khamdenu‌a wish-fulfilling cow Bonnie Zare Gogi Saroj Pal never sees barriers to her creativity. Though she is most known for her watercolor and gouache on paper, she has experimented with a number of other media including digital assemblage, lifesized dolls, and oil painting. No matter the medium, she embraces a strong colour palette and primarily portrays a woman, alone, for our contemplation. Concerned early on with how and why women were restricted, Pal steeped herself in the study of the Vedas, Puranas and other classic Hindu texts to find answers. Her artistic journey was shaped by the ideas of reworking sacred stories to free women from narrow archetypes. Beginning in 1988, Pal created a set of half-human/half-animal beings that move playfully about in unidentified spaces. Faces of women blink out of butterflies or bees, and arise out of bird bodies. Her innovative series Kinnari, divine bird-women captured the imaginations of many and firmly established Pal’s name as an artist. These images evoke a yearning for release, from perhaps either domestic drudgery or familial obedience, as a bird takes a few Kamdhenu - 9, Fiberglass & Acrylic Colours,6.5 X 5.0 X 6.5 inches, 2012

tentative steps or soars through a lush landscape. These figures draw forth a cluster of associations, among them women as nayikas, revered goddesses, useful and reliable domestic vehicles, and equivalent to mere animals in the eyes of society. Pal’s half-animal composites from 1980-99 show a single unclothed female figure whose top half is human and the bottom half morphs into an animal. The works impart a hypnotic movement, whisking the audience through a variety of poses, facial expressions and emotional responses. This exhibit displays a new development in Pal’s earlier Kamdhenu series, painted mainly between 1989 and 1998, and showing a woman whose head, arms and feet are human but whose torso, legs and tail are those of a cow. The term Kamdhenu refers to the ancient story in which the devas, divine male spirits, churned up the ocean with the assistance of Vishnu and brought forth an array of gifts, including a cow that inherently bestowed blessings on everybody. In everyday speech, docile daughters are sometimes praised as Kamdhenu, and thus the artist appears to be exploring a woman’s entrapment in - but also emergence from - a traditional role. With these sculptures the viewers can walk around the kamdhenu and absorb her three-dimensional nature. She does not represent docility and obedience but the many and varied expressions and experiences of a woman. Whereas the “ “Green khamdenu” has a box-like shape and half-shut or nearly closed eyes and thus seems to be inert and object-like, the eyes of the gold sculptured cow are open, promising more than a simple mask for society. The silver “kamdhenu wish-fulfilling cow 2” has sleek, graceful lines and a sensual expression; she and the “red kamdhenu” with her head tilted are ready to find joy in life, though the first appears flirtatious and the second more contemplative. “Kamdhenu-pearl-white” adds an immediate air of classic dignity through the use of white marble, although on second glance one feels the bodily stress of the woman’s awkward position. While her strong back leg is in the motion of moving forward, her short front legs and arched breasts hold her back, trapping the woman’s head (and thus mind and spirit) in between delay and progress. In the painting “khamdenu wish-fulfilling cows,” the chorus of cows in the backdrop move backward with heads looking forward and the central figure does the same but in reverse. The sun-drenched faces evoke hope and yet the lower tangle of legs at the bottom of the picture and the prominence of a hand-like udder suggest ambivalence. The sculpture “Kamdhenu wish-fulfilling red cow” also has a backdrop which invites us to ask questions. The sad eyes of the cow sculpture contrast with the “cutesy” wallpaperlike background of cows. The background’s side-by-side haunches form upside-down hearts, perhaps a reference to girlish décor that precedes the more serious complexity of adult womanhood. These new animal-human composite beings form a bridge between the fantastic and the ordinary, the traditional and the progressive, the divine and the earthly. Furthermore, the element of playfulness, as shown in “Kamdhenu sun-bathing,” is never far away, as befits Gogi Saroj Pal’s barrier-free creativity.

Gogi searched for her from of creative expression to be close to her own identity and her own experience. As put by Ved Nayar, she believed that;
(the) Indian woman is woman of real life, Who lives to close to earth, treads life as it Comes, keep her concers and convictions Within herself in an unequal relationship With society., survives somehow, and in the end succeeds, so that the world continues.
