‘MAHASNAN’ Paintings by
Gogi Saroj Pal
They say 'Let the history judge the work of Art'. I am curious to know , who is writing the history & who will be writing history of art & for whom ? Earlier history was written to glorify the Art portenaisers , their taste & collection . Creative visual imagery explored number of directions in the formative years of Indian contemporary art after independence, I feel, society & media was not so kind to begin with evolving number of creative directions now being practiced in Indian contemporary art scenario. Thought of compiling this book is to register the correct dates of the starting point of these creative visual directions in Contemporary Indian Art .

‘MAHASNAN’ Paintings by
Gogi Saroj Pal
Mahasnan As a woman artist, Gogi Saroj Pal has the distinction of addressing traditional concepts and mythology through a feminine consciousness and a contemporary sensibility. The present series of Gogi's paintings titled 'Mahasnan' explore the myths and narratives that have evolved around the human body and water-rites. The relationship of the human body with water seems primordial- inseparable from the life and nurture of the body-apparatus. Water and body are tied together in the journey of life through rituals and myths. From birth to death, water signifies the presence of the life force. Life begins with the foetus growing in the water sack in the womb, preparing to enter the world while when the body is about to pass away, the moisture of the eye and mouth starts drying up. Perhaps the most enduring and intimate act that connects the body and water is snan, the ritual of the daily bath. Unlike the drink of a glass of cool water when one is thirsty, or watching ones reflections in still water or standing under a gushing waterfall, the daily ritual of bathing in urban life is usually a private act, hidden from the gaze of the world. It is engaged with itself, almost unselfconsciously, every part of it touched and cleansed with water and brought back refreshed almost to the state of tabula rasa. As a child, one is bathed and dressed by others but gradually with the awareness of the body as one's own, a new kind of exploration is initiated, familiarizing the self with its corporeality. There is an intimacy in the relationship of the water and the body, the female body in particular, that is linked more closely to natural cycles than men. Women are always undergoing change- with puberty, with marriage, child bearing and motherhood. Also the fact that women are linked more closely to natural cycles than men. Myths have been woven around each of these to prepare and initiate the woman into the multiple roles that she will be drawn into. Rituals have been designed to educate the woman about her body, its care, protection, abstinence and indulgence. Of course, a lot of this revolves around the notion of purity and impurity of the female body, but here in Mahasnan, I think, Gogi hypothesizes that, women experience the vitality rooted in their biological selves as an enabling force, and the snan/bath is more a means to remain in touch with not only their own bodies but also with their creative selves. Bathing is the time when women think, drown in their inner being, dream, desire, recuperate and restore their powers to perform as women. It is rather engaging for Gogi to look into the many associations water evokes in the context of the body- as an agent of initiation into a culture or
religion, a cleansing agent, soothing and therapeutic in case of exhaustion and disease, sacred in religious rituals, sensual in physical indulgence. But more interestingly, the narratives get more complex
when the relationship between the water and human body gets more elaborate and regulated when layered with social and moral tones. The very personal act of simple ablutions in a private space transforms into elaborate ceremonies and a community ritual such as the mahasnan. The concept of the Mahasnan elevates the act of bathing as a practice of physical cleansing to a higher idea of a spiritual release. The shift in the relationship with water is from cleansing to purifying, the very act of immersing in water becoming a path for redemption. Mahasnan as a religious concept has been so significant in India that it has grown into a congregational festival called the Kumbh Mela, where millions of people immerse their bodies in the sacred waters of the Ganges and emerge feeling light having washed their sins. The secluded act of bathing is now a public event, performed in the rivers under the open sky. It is believed that the holy waters of the Ganges frees the body and mind from its past, to reach a pure state of consciousness wherein one becomes oblivious to the physicality of one's body and in the process loses it as well. Once again, the bonding of the self with the elemental forces of nature helps release its spiritual powers, where the body is used to transcend itself. Early groups of people settled close to rivers and ancient civilizations too were invariably located in the river valleys, which became the life force of these societies. These rivers were sacred, fertile, magical, mysterious and elaborate myths connected them to the lives of gods and goddesses, celebrating their celestial source. Indeed it is not a rare sight even in 21st century India, to see people offering
coins and flowers to rivers. The ashes of the dead are also finally merged with flowing rivers whose waters are believed to be pure and holy for final salvation. Temples have kunds (artificial ponds/lakes) planned within their sacred structure to prepare people for the spiritual journey of sacred rites. Mosques and mausoleums have fountains and a haudh, a place for ablutions as part of their architectural scheme. The Christians are baptized with the holy water. The Jews make offerings to water so that their sins get carried away. There are even Jewish ritual bathhouses for women to immerse themselves after menstrual days to be ready to receive life again. The regenerative power of water is central to many rituals and it

is invoked and appeased through hymns of fertility and nurture. For Gogi, these stories and their continuing presence provide space for fresh reflection. Gogi Saroj Pal's engagement with the mahasnan was sparked off by her recollection of experiences that go back to her childhood. She reminisces her neighbour's family would ritually go to the Ramganga river for a holy dip and to feed the fish. Feeding the fish was considered a holy deed .For Gogi, the fascination with the concept continued, and a couple of years after her father's death, she asked her mother if she would like to visit the Kumbh Mela and have a holy dip to which her mother replied, “ I have the Kumbh snan every morning. Her mother's attitude towards her daily bath that it was as pure as the ceremonial Mahasnan at Kumbh made Gogi think about the different philosophical meanings people attach to simple acts of living. The series on the Mahasnan begins with simple depictions of the physical involvement between the body and water while bathing. The intimate acts of caressing and cleansing are emphasized with a single woman in each frame, caught unawares as if in a self absorbed moment- scrubbing feet, stretching arms, washing her long tresses, sprinkling water on the face. There is a strange romance that develops between the woman and her body during the snan. Gogi captures the idea of the woman thinking through her body, her mind opening up along with her uninhibited body in the secluded space. She is not the object of the male gaze but the subject of her self-discovery. The sensuousness of the body is more stark and monumental in the absence of clothing and ornamentation. The female body for her is a potent source for both sexual enjoyment and spiritual attainment, and in both cases, the acts of preparation for the sacred and the beloved are through water-rites. Many of her travels have revealed to Gogi the visual magic experienced when water and light meet. Her observations of the different colours of water in ponds, and rivers, have been explored in the true painterly sense. When in the palm of the hand, the water looks colourless, but acquires shades of blue, blue green, brown, yellow brown, ice blue and white in distinct physical locations with the play of light and external environment. The progression of the series begins with paintings depicting the woman caught in the romance of emerging from the pond with her wet dripping hair, drying them in the sun, bending and twisting the body to scrub her back, drops of water on her body creating sensations and refreshing her thoughts and raw energies .The indulgence is visually captured in the different acts of sprinkling, throwing, showering and trickling water down

the body, sometimes gently and at other times in a continuous rhythmic force while bathing .In later paintings, the presence of the body is distanced, once immersed in the river. The sensual beauty of the female body is negated as the contours become shaky under the water and the body appears distorted. The Mahasnan, philosophically aims not the preservation of the corporeal body, but to leave it behind and liberate oneself from its burden and materiality, and attain that 'lightness of being. Like the Mahasnan, for Gogi, art making and her indulgence with her creative energies is about arriving at a free, liberated, inner being. Gogi does not paint the Mahasnan from a religious point of view at all, but perhaps challenges the possibilities of its interpretations. She consolidates her belief in the inextricably woven connections between the meanings of life and the primeval forces of Nature, and inspiration from them for her as an artist to create afresh. The negotiations between the mind and the body ultimately lead to her experience of the maha snan- the creative moment in which the self is submerged and lost in the river of the flowing waters of life.
