chinatown cultural centre focal point for the commons The “chinatown cultural centre” is five-storied tower that houses a cultural academy for the promotion of Chinese language and culture. This cultural academy would serve as an extension of the Kong Chow Wui Koon (KCCC) next door. To this end, the “Boundless Learning” is primarily designed as a multifunctional community space for members of the public to learn various aspects of Chinese culture. By providing seamless access to the various aspects of Chinese culture exhibited in the building and the KCCC, this tower shows members of the public the virtually infinite possibilities available in their adventure to learn more about Chinese culture.

cultural capillary focal point for the commons Modelled upon the the award-winning “Roof sentiment” at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), the “Cultural Capillary” is a roof installation would serve as the focal point of the newly rejuvenated Duxton Plain Park. Just as this park serves as the so-called ‘Green lungs” of the city, the “Cultural Capillary” is a vital component of the overall body of the city. Not only does this roof installation’s perforated character bear uncanny physical resemblance to that of a real capillary, it facilitates the flow of peoples and cultures between Little India and China Town.

The roof consists of woven attap blinds held together, with a set of wires that draw a wave design. The steel pipe structure that bears this roof is located on the top on a depressed ground which provides an intimate seating space where people can enjoy fresh air and shade away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The roof constitutes an icon of modernity with its light steel structure but also refers to the historical background of Singapore using attap a traditional building material used by inhabitants of its rural kampongs of all races.
