summer 2018
Welcome to Putney’s 67th season! It was the summer of 1951, and in a world still reeling from the aftershocks of the Second World War, our parents — devoted educators and dreamers — led 18 brave high school students on the first Putney trip to Europe, making the 10-day journey by steamer. Our dad’s world view was deeply shaped by his wartime service; our mom’s by a childhood in occupied Holland where her Jewish friends were dragged off by German troops. They shared what many believed, especially in a time before air travel, was a naive and unusual mission: To harness “summer vacation” to change the lives of young people by ushering them out of their comfort zones and empowering them to travel off the beaten track, connect meaningfully with people of different cultures, and embrace what is new and different in a supportive group of peers and leaders who challenge them, love them, and keep them safe. By doing so, our parents believed they could help contribute to a more peaceful world. Our world has changed radically in the 67 summers since, but Putney’s mission has not. We remain passionately devoted to being much more than just another summer experience. Instead, we provide innovative programs that foster maturity, self-confidence, and personal discovery while deepening global awareness and cultural understanding. The best part of this work we do with our 24 creative colleagues here in the Putney Barn is exactly what our parents loved the most, too: the transformative enthusiasm of our returning students — filled with tears and tales — and witnessing the lives changed as they hug their fellow students and leaders goodbye. Ultimately it is that joy and growth that all parents seek for their kids before they head off to blaze impressive paths for themselves in college and beyond; it’s what we at Putney work tirelessly year after year to create and deliver. The descriptions in this catalog can only scratch the surface of what a summer with Putney means. Please visit our website for more complete descriptions and details. We also urge you to call us about any programs that interest you so that we can get to know you better. We hope you will join us! Best,
Governor Peter Shumlin & Jeffrey Shumlin, Directors

67 Years of Experience
group is heart & soul
outstanding leaders
We’re not new at this. Our track record gives parents comfort. We understand the needs of young travelers and are highly skilled at facilitating positive experiences. Our excellent safety record reflects decades of institutional knowledge and expertise in performing successful risk management, supporting young travelers, and delivering high quality programming.
At Putney, we have learned that great programs start and end with great group dynamics and we’ve become experts in this field. Our leaders caringly facilitate a positive, cohesive spirit where everybody is included, celebrated, and invited to take ownership of the experience by practicing teamwork and leadership. “The Group” comes first in any Putney trip, leading to increased maturity, broadened perspectives, and lasting friendships.
The average age of our program leaders is 28. We choose them on the basis of expertise in the destinations in which they lead as well as their ability to inspire their students. Many have advanced degrees from top universities and take time away from successful careers summer after summer because they love our students and believe in our mission.

great students Our admissions team carefully reviews applications and accepts only students who have the ability to thrive on a Putney program. Our goal is to accept young people who are well adjusted, bright, eager, curious about the world, and who can contribute positively to their group.
innovative programming
Programs grades 4–12
We continually strive to improve and advance our programming in response to world events and the needs of our students. Our international network of friends, organizations, and local people has been built over almost seven decades; folks in government, teachers, farmers, merchants, artisans, adventurers, and NGOs help our students become a part of the lives and cultures they visit.
Programs begin locally with expeditions in Vermont and New England for fourth to sixth graders. Middle schoolers can join us in Costa Rica, France and Holland, and Ecuador. We offer language programs for eighth and ninth graders in France and Spain; high school students can join incredible adventures all over the world and we offer Pre-College programs on campuses in the USA, Europe, and Japan.

Lasting Benefits
keeping it small
Student Ownership
Over the course of 66 summers, we’ve become experts at facilitating programs that instill in our students confidence, passion for cultures and ideas different from their own, and lasting personal growth — benefits that extend far beyond summer. Our programs often serve as springboards for students to develop passions that lead to careers and lifelong interests. Many of our students return from their programs ready to make the world a better place.
By keeping our groups small we create unique experiences where individual connections take root. Our alumni stay in touch with us and each other for years because they have made real personal connections to the people they’ve met through Putney. Sending hundreds of students on the same itineraries doesn’t facilitate the magical, personal connections that foster growth the Putney way.
Students learn and grow the most when they are given clear expectations, carefully outlined responsibilities, and meaningful leadership roles that allow them to take ownership of their experience. While our leaders supervise and direct each program, students actively help lead many important daily tasks, activities, and discussions. This creates an atmosphere where everyone feels valued, included, and empowered to contribute.

Global Stewardship
fun
We have clearly communicated expectations of behavior that are designed to keep students safe and bring out the best in them. Our simple rules — no smoking, drinking, or drugs, as well as a few more — promote safety and build trust within the group.
We partner with communities around the world through long-term collaborations built over 67 years. Our students benefit from authentic interactions with local people that are unique to their group. As a result, they learn to understand and value community empowerment, cultural diversity, and environmental sustainability.
While our programs all have ambitious educational goals, our founders believed that you learn best when you’re having fun. For 66 years Putney has made learning fun and we can guarantee that’s not going to change in our 67th summer. Please join us!

Going beyond for 67 years For almost seven decades Putney students have trekked the globe, immersing themselves in cultures and communities as their lives are changed.
1951–The first trip departs by steamship for Switzerland, Italy, France, and Holland, led by founders George and Kitty Shumlin. The ocean crossing takes ten days each way — three weeks of an eight-week program.
1957–During the Cold War, Putney becomes the first organization to take high school students to the U.S.S.R., exploring Moscow and Leningrad and living with Russian students on the Black Sea.

For students completing grades four through six, Discover Putney is an excellent, fun way to go far beyond the typical camp experience while exploring the rugged natural beauty and proud farming culture of rural New England. Students travel by foot, bike, and kayak, and camp in tents under the supervision of engaged and caring leaders who help create an inclusive, family-like group experience. The program includes opportunities to connect with local farmers, artisans, and communities through hands-on experiences and by lending a hand to a community garden that provides food for families in need. These small-group expeditions are carefully structured to match the interests and abilities of our youngest students so they can build confidence and leadership for future adventures.
Students in grades six, seven, and eight are at a unique point in life and need group travel experiences that offer plenty of support and structure, yet don’t stifle their emerging independence. It’s an ideal age to begin to develop an interest in cultural fluency and global stewardship. Our Middle School programs provide a perfect balance of language exposure and an introduction to outdoor and cultural adventures. Led by caring professionals who understand the mindset and perspectives of young adolescents, Putney Middle School programs are great first trips abroad without parents and they that inspire curiosity and build confidence. A low student to leader ratio ensures that students receive personal attention in a program that is structured, safe, and fun.
Service learning enables young people to connect meaningfully with people of different cultures while deepening understanding and awareness of global issues affecting communities around the world. Teamwork, cultural immersion, and helping others encourages students to mature and grow into global citizens. We carefully plan and execute projects in partnership with local communities and contacts we have known for years. Each project is facilitated by expert leaders with deep knowledge of the cultures and environments we visit. New projects in 2018 include opportunities to join hurricane recovery efforts in the Caribbean and engage with children and teenagers in Rwanda.

Bring your Spanish or French language studies to life and develop your skills in an immersive setting that accelerates the pace of learning. Active lessons, family stays, informal chats, cultural activities, and a pledge to communicate using only the language you are studying all combine to create an atmosphere conducive to maximum language retention. Professional language teachers make lessons fun and interactive. You’ll be able to practice with locals and put your new skills to use right away. Opportunities for older and younger students to travel and study with a group of their peers make learning fun and age-appropriate. Choose from programs in Spain, Ecuador, and France.
For seasoned adventurers or first time travelers who want to go straight to the heart of what makes a country and its people tick, Cultural Exploration programs are the way to go. Balance city experiences with rural living, cafes with chalets, museums with alpine meadows. Get off the beaten track and see the world like a traveler — not as a tourist. From Muay Thai training and elephant conservation in Southeast Asia to shredding Southern Hemisphere powder in Patagonia or climbing waterfalls in Iceland, experience an authentic slice of culture in amazing locations all over the globe. New programs this year include Himalayan adventures in Bhutan, a survey of China’s language and rich culture, and an introductory experience in Costa Rica.

Collaborate with government officials to rebuild communities Work with local foremen on community-initiated projects Organize a summer enrichment program for local students Connect with people who have been affected by the storms
Destination • On September 18, 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Dominica, leaving communities in ruin and without homes, schools, hospitals, roads, water, or electricity. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said Dominica has “lost all what money can buy and replace.” Since 1989, Putney has brought students to this small island country, still largely untouched by tourism. Projects • Our previous host villages of La Plaine and Bense experienced extensive damage, with 90% of community houses damaged or destroyed. Work alongside skilled construction workers, friends, and government officials to help rebuild homes, schools, and infrastructure impacted by the hurricane. Students may also have the opportunity to coordinate summer enrichment programs for students who missed classes due to severely damaged school buildings. Activities • Between service projects, spend downtime with members of the community, hearing stories of their lives and perseverance in the wake of Maria. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo pounded the Eastern Caribbean, inflicting enormous damage on the island of Montserrat. The hurricane left many of its 10,000 inhabitants homeless. Putney responded the following summer with our first hurricane relief program. Years later, following the devastation of Hurricane Marilyn in 1995 and Hurricane Georges in 1998, Putney sent programs to the island of Dominica and to the Dominican Republic to help rebuild.

Putney first visited the Dominican Republic in the summer of 1999 after Hurricane Georges devastated the southwest portion of the country in 1998. At the time, Rolando Matos was head of the local fire station in Barahona. He introduced us to communities in need and facilitated reconstruction projects for our group that first summer. Eighteen years later, Rolando and his wife Licet continue to coordinate Putney’s community-initiated projects in the region and are cherished members of the Putney family.

The karst topography we visit in China’s Guangxi province occurred when the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates collided, forming the Himalaya Mountains and causing underwater sediment to erupt into these dramatic limestone peaks. Characterized by sinkholes, caves, and underground rivers, this unique landscape is ideal for climbing and caving.

Scholarship Opportunities The Putney Open Door Fund is a non-profit foundation whose purpose is to provide support for young people seeking educational summer experiences they could not otherwise afford. The Fund’s Board of Directors is committed to making the immeasurable benefits of an experience like Putney available to all students, regardless of their economic status. The success of the Putney Open Door Fund depends on the generosity of its donors, most of whom are alumni or parents. One hundred percent of donations goes directly to funding scholarship students. Your support is greatly appreciated! The Putney Open Door Fund generally limits eligibility to students who are U.S. residents, whose parents’ combined income is less than $40,000, and who have few assets. Full and partial scholarships are awarded each year. Please note that because many applications are received, allocation is competitive. Preference is often given to students who have not had similar educational or travel opportunities.
David Gruppo
how to apply To consider an applicant for a scholarship award, the Putney Open Door Fund must receive complete scholarship applications via mail no later than Thursday, February 15, 2018. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

I gained a deeper sense of what it means to connect with others without the internet and a greater appreciation for the resources at my disposal. Please keep doing this trip for other students. Please keep funding the Open Door scholarship, so students like me can go on these wondrous adventures. I am SO GLAD that I did. Truly the best summer of my life!

We expect Putney participants to maintain high standards of personal behavior. Since they are encouraged, within the context of our programs, to take leadership roles and to make some of their own discoveries, students whose parents require them to be under constant surveillance or who are likely to act irresponsibly; use drugs, alcohol, or tobacco; or behave in a disruptive manner should not apply. Students who violate our few rules are subject to dismissal at our sole discretion. Parents are responsible for making arrangements for, bearing the cost of, and providing supervision for dismissed students’ immediate travel home, even in situations that require extended international travel. In such cases, no refund of the program tuition is given. Students dismissed from programs will not receive credit for community service hours completed prior to their dismissal. At Putney we take pride in our reputation for careful, thorough planning and attention to detail. The descriptions of our programs are based on our experiences in previous summers and our plans for this summer. It is inevitable that some details described here will not happen exactly as presented. To get the most out of the Putney experience, participants need to be flexible in responding to unforeseen situations and creative in taking advantage of unexpected opportunities. We expect Putney participants to share responsibility for the success of their experience.
