Welcome to Putney’s 70th season! It was the summer of 1951, and in a world still reeling from the aftershocks of the Second World War, our parents—devoted educators and dreamers—led 18 brave high school students on the first Putney trip by ship to Europe. Their worldview was shaped by war and reconciliation. They shared what seemed at that time a naive and unusual mission: to use “summer vacation” to change the lives of young people by ushering them out of their comfort zones and empowering them to learn off the beaten track, to connect meaningfully with people of different cultures, and to embrace what is new and different with a supportive group of peers and leaders who would challenge them and keep them safe. As we hopefully emerge from the nightmare of COVID-19, we believe these qualities make summer 2021 our most important ever. In the face of divisiveness and pandemic, we understand that experiential learning and human connection are essential for young people who have spent months online and socially isolated. Of course, safety remains paramount. We have developed specific systems of evaluation and protocols that allow us to offer programs in places that are safe. Please call us to hear about the programs we have run successfully at home and abroad since COVID-19.

The best part of the work we do with our creative colleagues here in the Putney Barn is exactly what our parents also loved the most: the transformative enthusiasm, selfconfidence, and personal discovery of our returning students—filled with tears of joy and tales—lives visibly changed as they hug their fellow students and leaders goodbye. Ultimately, it is that happiness and growth that all parents seek for their kids before they head off to blaze impressive paths for themselves in college and beyond; it’s what we at Putney work year after year to create and deliver. The descriptions in this catalog can only scratch the surface of what a summer with Putney means. Please visit our website for more complete descriptions and details. We also urge you to call us about any programs that interest you so that we can get to know you better. We hope you will join us! Best

PUTNEY STUDENT Travel

Now entering our 70th year, we remain passionately devoted to being much more than just another summer experience. Instead, we provide innovative programs that foster maturity, self-confidence, and personal discovery while deepening global awareness and cultural understanding.

Our Commitment to

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Racism exists and we acknowledge that our organization has benefited and continues to benefit from centuries of privilege as it relates to power, race, class, citizenship, gender, and mobility. As a predominantly white organization, we recognize our responsibility to work diligently and passionately to understand and dismantle systems of oppression. Putney Student Travel affirms the Black Lives Matter movement and stands with students and staff who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, People of Color, and LGBTQIA+. Putney will work alongside them to dismantle barriers of injustice and oppression. We commit to increase diversity at all levels of our organization, and realize that this work is ongoing. We commit to advocacy, accountability, and to living these values at every level of the organization both at home and abroad. Putney Student Travel, located on the traditional ancestral land of the Abenaki, commits to being anti-racist and taking measurable steps to increase diversity within our organization, in order to bring greater and more meaningful opportunities for connection, learning, and growth. We commit to: • Integrate anti-racist curriculum into all of our programs. • Expand our partnerships with external, BIPOC-identifying facilitators as we learn to dismantle systems of oppression, practice better allyship, and strive to be anti-racist. • Seek out collaborations with youth development organizations focused on diversity, equity, allyship, and inclusion. • Increase scholarship access, funding, and partnerships and to share our progress. • Highlight social justice organizations and platforms supported by our programming, leaders, staff, and students. • Continue support of our staff and students of all gender identities and expressions, religions, and abilities. • Build upon our ongoing efforts to diversify our leadership teams and student body.

travel & covid-19 Since Putney’s founding 70 years ago, we have approached each student’s experience with the same attention to safety and security that we give our own children. Now is no exception. We have implemented robust health and safety protocols for our programs, have proven success in providing transformative travel experiences in this “new normal,” and offer an industry-leading refund policy for maximum peace of mind as you plan your next Putney adventure. For our most current statement and policy, visit goputney.com

Communication & Flexibility

We developed health policies and safety protocols that meet and exceed the requirements of each host country. We are closely monitoring COVID-19 developments both in our program destinations and globally. Our health and safety measures consider the latest guidance and recommendations of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, international and local health agencies, and destination partners.

We know that these are uncertain times. Over seven decades we’ve earned a reputation for good judgment, thoughtful and clear communication, and a commitment to the core mission of our programs, as well as the safety of our travelers. We will continue to be flexible and ask for your flexibility as we respond with caution and prudence to the shifting global health landscape.

Proven Success in the U.S. & Abroad

Peace of Mind Refund Policy

In summer 2020, when international travel was not possible, we developed two campus-based programs in our home state of Vermont for both high school and middle school students. In the fall, we designed Gap travel programs for college-aged students in carefully chosen international locations where the virus had been well managed. In all, hundreds of Putney students traveled and engaged in person, making the magic happen, with zero instances of COVID-19.

In times like these, it makes sense to have a refund policy that allows for maximum peace of mind. Tuition payments are 100% refundable for any reason until March 15, 2021. If we decide to cancel your program, we offer you a place on similar programs. If your second choice isn’t available, we refund 100% of your tuition payments and application fee. It’s that simple.

Putney Gap As schools and colleges continue remote learning, we’ve designed new Gap travel programs for college students who seek in-person experiences, authentic travel and cultural immersion, and opportunities for experiential learning. Travel in the company of fellow students with similar interests, who are as curious and passionate as you are about the world around you.

Each trip explores a particular theme: See firsthand how Iceland leads the way in renewable energy and explore responses to climate change. Delve into sustainable travel, ecotourism, and conservation in Costa Rica. Study the history of conflict in Croatia and witness the factors leading to its economic rejuvenation. Explore land management in the Montana Rockies. Engage with the culture and learn about the advanced agricultural systems of Native Hawaiians.

70 Years of Experience

Lasting Benefits

Outstanding Leaders

We’re not new at this. Our exceptional safety record gives parents comfort and reflects decades of institutional knowledge and expertise in performing successful risk management, supporting young travelers, and delivering high quality programming.

Our programs instill confidence, maturity, and passion for cultures and ideas that are new to students—benefits that extend far beyond summer. These experiences often serve as springboards for students to develop lifelong interests.

We choose highly qualified leaders with expertise in the destinations to which they lead as well as the ability to inspire students. Many have advanced degrees and take time away from successful careers to lead because they love our students and believe in our mission.

Why Choose Putney?

Innovative Programs

It’s Fun!

We carefully review applications and accept only students who have the ability to thrive on a Putney program. Our goal is to accept young people who are well adjusted, bright, curious about the world, and who can contribute positively to their group.

We continually strive to develop and improve our programming in response to world issues. Our students benefit from a global network of friends and partner organizations that has been built over seven decades and includes teachers, farmers, artists, activists, NGOs, and many others.

While our programs all have ambitious educational goals, our founders believed that you learn best when you’re having fun. Putney has always made learning fun and we can guarantee that’s not going to change in our 70 th summer. Please join us!

The Putney Difference Excellent Group Dynamics Our leaders facilitate a positive group dynamic and build a community where everyone is included, celebrated, and invited to participate. Putney students return home with increased maturity, lasting friendships, and broadened perspectives.

Student Ownership Students learn and grow the most when they are given clear expectations and a chance to take ownership of their experience. While our leaders supervise and direct each program, students actively lead important daily tasks, activities, and discussions.

High Expectations We have clearly communicated expectations of behavior that are designed to keep students safe and bring out the best in them. Our simple rules—no smoking, drinking, or drugs, as well as a few more— promote safety and build trust within the group.

Global Stewardship We partner with communities around the world through long-term collaborations. Our students benefit from authentic interactions with local people. As a result, they learn to value community empowerment, cultural diversity, and environmental sustainability.

I made friends for a lifetime, and had some of the best experiences of my life. — Sophia L., Park Tudor School, Carmel, IN

Safety & risk management A commitment to safety is the bedrock of our program operations. The full-time Putney team, led by Directors Jeff Shumlin and Governor Peter Shumlin, is large enough to operate innovative programs all over the world, yet small enough to ensure that all families receive the highest level of support.

Experienced Leadership We hire and train only the best international educators—college graduates with high levels of maturity, judgment, and expertise, significant experience working with young people, and certifications in CPR and First Aid.

Open Lines of Communication We maintain open lines of communication with parents, students, and leaders. While programs are underway, we can be reached by phone 24/7.

An Inclusive Environment We celebrate diversity on our programs and expect the same of our students. We do not tolerate bullying and act decisively to safeguard the physical and emotional safety of our students.

Program Setup & Emergency Support We only offer programs in stable locations with the infrastructure to handle urgent situations that might realistically arise. Our vetting process includes making site visits, monitoring locations, reviewing safety records, and more. Our students abroad are covered for emergencies by one of the world’s leading medical evacuation plans.

H I G H S C H O O L | G R A D E S 9 –1 2 Expeditions Get out into the field and discover fascinating destinations across the globe through the lens of an On Assignment project. Each expedition offers a choice of two or three areas of focus, such as photography, geology, or wildlife conservation. Pursue your selected project with guidance from your Expedition Leaders and a National Geographic Expert, and explore through hands-on activities and excursions; then share what you’ve created with the group.

University Workshops From your base at a top university, delve into issues impacting the future of our world, and examine solutions offered by engineering, technology, journalism, and more. Participate in stimulating seminars and hands-on workshops, and meet National Geographic Experts to hear about their innovative work in our areas of focus. Develop a capstone project to address an issue you’ve encountered, and pitch your idea for a chance to receive funding from National Geographic to launch your initiative.

Photography Workshops Our photo workshops will inspire you to take your photography to the next level. Each day, learn important photography lessons in the classroom and apply them in some of the world’s most photogenic places, shooting alongside a National Geographic photographer. Together with your fellow travelers, work to organize, curate, and install a pop-up gallery show featuring each student’s original images.

Community Service Trips Settle into a community and get involved with collaborative service projects that focus on infrastructure, education, or sustainability. Work alongside local people, and document your experience through photos, journals, and video. These service projects provide an opportunity for deeper cultural interaction and insight into daily life in our host communities.

M I D D L E S C H O O L | G R A D E S 7– 8 Expeditions These highly structured trips allow students who are completing grades seven or eight to discover exciting destinations in a fun, engaging, and safe environment. With guidance from Expedition Leaders and a National Geographic Expert, students explore a number of themes that enhance their experience and encourage them to deepen the interests they already have, while discovering new ones along their journey.

OUR EXPECTATIONS We expect Putney participants to maintain high standards of personal behavior. Since they are encouraged, within the context of our programs, to take leadership roles and to make some of their own discoveries, students whose parents require them to be under constant surveillance or who are likely to act irresponsibly, use drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, or behave in a disruptive manner, should not apply. Students who violate our few rules are subject to dismissal at our sole discretion. Parents are responsible for making arrangements for, bearing the cost of, and providing supervision for dismissed students’ immediate travel home, even in situations that require extended international travel. In such cases, no refund of the program tuition is given. Students dismissed from programs will not receive credit for community service hours completed prior to their dismissal. At Putney we take pride in our reputation for careful, thorough planning and attention to detail. The descriptions of our programs are based on our experiences in previous summers and our plans for this summer. It is inevitable that some details described here will not happen exactly as presented. To get the most out of the Putney experience, participants need to be flexible in responding to unforeseen situations and creative in taking advantage of unexpected opportunities. We expect Putney participants to share responsibility for the success of their experience. Dates & details are subject to change.
