Rea de r s

Dear

With each issue come more challenges, more to design, more people to turn down, and more time to be spent. But let me tell you that it’s all worth it in the end. Every single issue excites me more and more. I love the people who submit, I wish I could except you all.

A

ndre is a 26 year old photographer located in Rio Tinto, Portugal. His work is greatly inspired by music and its power it posesses over his creative process. His photos are sharp, clean, and crisp, making his work feel very professional. It’s easy to tell that in many of his photos he creates concepts dealing with a darker surreal world, a world in which Andre has created that is full of stories. Even his more simple composed images hold a strong concept to grasp. He tunes us into his stories and draws us in with unique editing processes that can be characterized as his own. To view more of his work, please visit : http://www.flickr.com/photos/andre_varela If you could go anywhere in the world to take photographs, where would you go and why? There are two places that i would go for sure. The first one is Japan. It’s my long life dream to live and work there. I love the culture, the landscapes, the people, everything! The second place would be the Amazon rainforest. I would love to shoot the wildlife, the people and do some conceptual photography... I think that being there must feel like another world... There are other places that i would love to go, but these two take the gold.

What have you learned about yourself through your photos? I have learned a great deal about myself through my photos. Photography has allowed me express myself like I never did before I started. I have learned who I am, although at times it seems like I am still searching.

What keeps you shooting images? There’s this awesome feeling you got when you created a photograph, and I absolutely love it. It’s not only about the photo, it’s also about the process of setting up for hours and then shooting for hours and finally editing, for days. A photographer takes something from the world and freeze it, whether it’s a light or a place or a memory. Tell us a little about your own photographic style I’ve always tried to create not just stories, but worlds, in my photograph. I want to create characters and their stories. Because through photography, you can create something that is sometimes impossible in the real world. It’s that effect, that magical factor, that I’m trying to grasp and would be proud to call my style. What inspires you the most? Everything. I can look at an antique phone or a wall or a chess set and suddenly ‘bam!’ I get an inspiration. I’m a naturally curious and observant person so I find inspiration in the smallest of things - and try to incorporate them into a bigger picture.

Why landscape photography? Living on an island as beautiful as the Isle of Man, it’s difficult not to be influenced by the landscapes you see everyday. And with the island being so small, you’re never far away from a potentially beautiful photograph. As much as I love shooting portraits too, there’s something magical about being able to show off the place you live in all its beauty and the variety you can get from shooting the same place at different times of the year.

What is your favourite location you’ve ever shot at? Ooh... That’s difficult! I love the island’s hills and how different it is to be out in the countryside compared to being in the town, but I think any location has the potential to look beautiful. My favourite location is always changing depending on the time of year. I tend to prefer shooting in autumn and winter though, because the way the light hits the landscape is what makes me love a scene so much more.

Explain to us about your editing process. I’d like to think I never use the exact same edit process every time. I have a couple of Photoshop actions I’ll use to brighten colours, nothing too major, and then individually tweak little details until I’m happy. I’ve also gotten a lot more interested in HDR (high dynamic range) lately, though I try never to go over the top and don’t rely on it all the time. I’d say my landscape work was fairly equally balanced in a variety of editing techniques. For me the editing process is always to enhance, never to change - I don’t clone things out (except the odd dust spot on my sensor!) or dramatically alter the appearance of the scene because I think it takes away from the scene’s character.

What inspires you to keep shooting? Although rather clichéd, the beauty of the Isle of Man really does inspire me hugely. There are many other wonderfully talented photographers where I live - who’s work I love - but the majority of them do portraits and I wanted to try something different. I hate hearing people complain about the island, so I suppose a large part of my motivation stems from wanting to prove them wrong and show them how lucky we are.

How do you know when it’s a perfect spot to take a photo? Sometimes I’ll be in the car and just spot a lovely scene, then have to fight the urge to stop everything to go take photos because it’s just not possible at the time... Needless to say I make a mental note to return for a photo! I really love a scene where the light is perfect and dramatic, or the colours really pop. I suppose that’s why I love autumn and winter so much; beautiful light with the most magnificently dramatic sunsets. If you could travel anywhere to take a photo, where would you go and why? I’m honestly not much of a travelling person. I went to Paris a few years back and it was beautiful, but I’d only just started taking a few (very poor quality) photos on my camcorder at the time, so I think it’d be wonderful to revisit Paris because of how much my photography has grown since. Though I don’t think I’ll ever work up the nerve to be able to get to the top of the Eiffel Tower! I’m happy with the Isle of Man for now because there are so many places I’ve yet to discover and photograph!

What inspires you the most? My daydreams inspire me tremendously. Sometimes those seemingly insignificant thoughts and emotions that find themselves in my skull and heart snowball into something greater as I experience the day. They often become elaborate stories. I’ve gotten in the habit of keeping a little notebook with me at all times to jot down the daydreams I find most inspiring.

If you could go anywhere in the world to take photographs, where would you go and why? Last summer, I went to Washington state and I can honestly say I have never been so astounded by the beauty and immensity of nature. Between the Olympic Mountain Range, Mount Rainier, views of the Pacific, and so many other gorgeous sites, I could see myself spending a lifetime taking pictures there.

What inspires you? I find the work of other photographers incredibly inspirational, it drives me to do better, but in general the world around me, certain people and landscapes.

What have you learned by taking your photographs? Pursuing photography changed my life. I finally felt like I had a purpose and a path and I suppose I have learned to be more ambitious in my expectations for myself.

If you could go anywhere in the world to take photos, where would you go? I would love to have the resources to travel all over America, north, south, east, and west in a caravan of people and costumes and props, alighting wherever we so choose to create marvellous photographs. America, because it is so diverse and harbours the notion of adventure, and possibility.

66

What keeps you shooting images? I suppose the desire to create. The fact that you are bringing something into existence that has never been there before and the opportunity to make or capture something beautiful, to constantly express and grow as a person and as an artistic soul.

If you could go anywhere in the world to take photographs, where would you go and why? To the bottom of the ocean to discover that there is no bottom, just infinite depth. In this deadly deepness are the most lunatic existences you have never dreamed of.

Katrina is a 20 year old photographer based in Germany. Her style is very unique; you can tell that she is a far away dreamer. Photography keeps her level-minded while also allowing the depths of her mind to go beyond the beauty of which you see everyday. She creates new beauty by giving an altered perspective of a familiar scene. There is a natural element that is consistant among her photographs that makes you feel like you are in a mystical gypsy land. How do you choose which images go together? Usually I combine two photos from the same shooting. Often it is a portrait or another photo of a human on the one side and the second photo is one with an item which thematically fits to the first photo, for example a flower etc. But sometimes it’s the complete opposite when I combine for example a new photo with an old one from which I thought I could never be able to make use of it. That’s why I cannot say that there’s a proof rule for how I decide which images I put together. What inspires you the most? The beauty of the nature around my house and also in other countries, of which too many people sadly do not take note anymore. The silence and mightiness of forests, lakes and mountains. The elegance of horses and cats, I cannot stop marvelling when I look at these wonderful animals… My special muse and spending time with my closest friends. Music, especially the lyrics of some German singers and bands to which I have some great memories. Taking and editing photos while listening to music can do real wonders! And finally: one of my biggest idols, the lovely photographer Grit Siwonia.

92

What have you learned about yourself through your photos? I have learned to have more confidence in me and my strengths and talents and that it is worth being different in your style and thoughts, no matter if some people say derogatory things about your photos and laugh at you because you hang up hundreds of book pages down from the ceiling of your room or because you lie in the mud in a forest with feathers all over your body just because for one photo. I experienced that the nice feedback and also the positive criticism from all the great followers and other photographers can be so motivating and encouraging and one day the ambition will be paid off. Besides I have learned to deal better with my thoughts and also sorrows or other bad temper by converting and taking them off into photos which is a great way to feel free.

How did you begin photography? I think there wasn’t a concrete date or reason when or why I begun photography. I always liked to take photos when my family and me were on holiday, when there was a birthday party or another big event. When I think back and pass the last years in my mind, I guess it was around one to one and a half year ago when I first tried to take a photo with a real concept and edited contrast, brightness and easy colour curves afterwards. With the time my skills improved slowly, made my first account in a photography community on the internet and enjoyed this hobby more and more. I realised that I can express my feelings and thoughts the best while making diptychs. Now it is not only a hobby anymore in a long time, I can say that photography became nearly the most considerable/ significant thing in my whole life.

Do your photos tell stories or are they more of just simple moments? I guess you cannot generalise it for my whole photos, every image can have a different meaning for me and also for the other viewers. That’s so admirable about photography: everyone makes his/her own imagination and thinks of another story while looking at the photo.

How is a diptych aesthetically pleasing to you? In my opinion the colours and tones of the two several images should go well together but most important is my gut instinct. If it feels right when I look at the diptych, I am happy. To view more of her work please visit: https://www.facebook.com/ sarahmichallekfotografie

What keeps me shooting images? I have to say people, nature, and my burning passion for photography. Nature always ceases to amaze me. Whenever I feel so uninspired, somehow nature gives me a push to take pictures. Whether it be the sun coming up in the morning or new flowers blooming; it inspires me too much. People always push me to take pictures because of their tremendous amount of support and the way humans work is so fascinating to me. & the fact that photography is a burning passion, even when I am most uninspired to take pictures the burning sensation in my heart always urges to me to do so.

What inspires you the most? I probably sound cliche when I say this, but everything. Just my life holds so much beauty and I want to capture it in every way possible. Whether it be a person picking up something someone else dropped, the light rain on a summer day, or the laugh of a child. All of it is so inspiring and beautiful. It just makes me a giddy inside & I then express my feelings for my life through my photos!

If you could go anywhere in the world to take photographs, where would you go and why? Oh gosh, this is a hard one. I would love to go everywhere, but I have to say my first choice would be Paris. There is just so much to do and see in Paris, and I think it would be the perfect place for an adventure full of photos. Plus, I am obsessed with the French language!

Tell us a little bit about your photographic style. I started shooting one year and half from now: first I didn’t know what I really want to shoot, but soon it was clear that fashion and conceptuals was a right way for me. I started with self-portrets and I still do them. They are the only way to express the feeling in the way I feel them, I don’t have to put my imagination in models’ minds and explain everything how I want to do something; but it doesn’t mean that work with models is unimportantit gives me a lot of beautiful experiences. What have you learned about yourself through photography? It’s so easy to give up and say:’’I’m not good enough, that’s not for me.’’ But insist in your work, even if it’s hard, is a great way to show emotions that other people might haven’t felt or saw yet. You can make a fairytale from them or show the most gloomy and depressed feeling you can think of. And then it depands on others how will they see it: will it be just a gorgeous photo or something deeper. I hope I will never give up on photography.

If you could go anywhere in the world to take photographs, where would you go and why? I would love to go to India for the bright colors and the people and also to South America for the nature. Next year I am planing to go to Mexico to the pyramids, and that would be a dream. But I think every place has beautiful and interested things to photograph. If I could I would spend my life traveling around.

What keeps you shooting images? Being able to stretch reality is what keeps me shooting. Photography enables me to create me own fantasy worlds where I leave the interpreting up the viewer.
