SHARING THE MISSION BOARD PRESIDENT MESSAGE.

WHAT SHOULD OUR COMMUNITY DO IF WE KNEW IT COULD NOT FAIL?

W

elcome to the 2014 Annual Report of the Golden Belt Community Foundation. Inside this report, you will find stories about people you may know, stories about the community you live in, and the positive difference the Golden Belt Community Foundation is able to make, thanks to the foresight and generosity of many people… people whose dedication to their community will live long past themselves, and continue to fuel perpetuating effort to encourage, maintain, and build a community we can proudly present to the next generation. As I write this, the assets of GBCF have crossed the 18 million dollar threshold, representing a period of significant growth. This growth comes coupled with a responsibility to continuously search for opportunities to become, through focused leadership, an effective partnership of support and need, allowing for lasting impact on the communities served by the Foundation.

2

This search has reminded me that the legacy of a community is built equally by ideas put into action…and unfortunately, by ideas never acted upon. I want to encourage you to share your ideas on the kind of community we should hand forward. Take part along with us in helping shape the impact the GBCF has on this community. Help us answer the question… “What Should Our Community Do If We Knew It Could Not Fail?” Now, enjoy the highlights of the past year. We hope to hear from you soon! Thanks for being a part of this community, Mark Bitter, President Golden Belt Community Board of Directors

COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT UNDERSTANDING THE NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY. WHEN YOU DISCOVER YOUR MISSION, YOU WILL FEEL ITS DEMAND.

OUR MISSION To plan, work, and invest today for a more secure, improved, and better tomorrow. WHO WE ARE Established in 1996, Golden Belt Community Foundation exists to provide non-profit organizations in central Kansas with a permanent source of support and to serve as a vehicle for charitable giving for donors. GBCF serves the counties of Barton, Pawnee, Rush and Stafford. We believe the strength of our communities is the same today as it was in the early years. That strength is exemplified in neighbors giving to neighbors to enhance the quality of life of the communities in which we live. GBCF provides the opportunity to build on that strength.

SPOTLIGHT ON 2013 GRANT RECIPIENT BARTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE NURSING PROGRAM. MARY ANN KLEIN ENDOWMENT FUNDS PURCHASE SIMPAD.

B

In 2013, the Barton Community College Nursing Program BCC NURSING was able to purchase a brand new piece of technology – the PROGRAM SimPad. The Barton Community College Foundation, Golden

Belt Community Foundation and the St. Rose Foundation worked together in 2007 to raise money for the Mary Ann Klein Endowment, which is used to support nursing programs, training and purchase equipment. The three foundations decided to purchase a SimPad with $3,600 of the interest they had received from the endowment. The SimPad hooks up to the programmable “patients” – mannequins the college uses for training exercises in their nursing laboratories.

GB CF A GREAT EXAMPLE OF PARTNERSHIP “The SimPad allows our students to perform assessments on the mannequins, with a much larger variety of simulations,” Director of the Barton’s Nursing Program Dr. Kathy Kottas said. “They can hear various lung, heart and abdominal sounds and the dummies can actually cough etc.” Golden Belt Foundation Executive Director Christy Tustin said the teamwork between the foundations was excellent. “It was just a great example of a partnership,” she said.

SPOTLIGHT ON 2014 GRANT RECIPIENT LARNED SAVES THE TRAIN.

EXCITEMENT FUELS A COMMUNITY WHO COMES TOGETHER FOR A COMMON CAUSE.

WHERE’S THE TRAIN? Spanning more than 70 years, residents of Larned, young and old alike, have enjoyed riding and watching The Schnack Express as goes around and around. Many of us have childhood memories of this train and the smiles it brought. It was for this reason that in early 2014, when the train wasn’t found making its normal route around the tracks, area citizens began raising questions, “Where’s the train?” Volunteer members of the Kiwanas Club have operated the train for over 30 years. During their annual train maintenance, it was found that the train parts that needed replaced were no longer available for the Miniature Train Company G-12. This remnant of the past had literally become stalled in its tracks until a solution could be found. The problem was not just the unavailable parts, but also the lack of dollars needed to make any kind of repairs.

Grants made possible by the following funds: Glenn & Elaine Mull Family Fund: $1,000 Joseph & Jean Simmons Donor Advised Fund: $614 Kansas Health Foundation Children’s Health Endowment Fund: $1,386

GB CF COMMUNITY MEMBERS UNITE Members of Larned Pride were made aware of the situation and decided to take action and collaborate with the City of Larned and Kiwanas Club. Excitement built as members made a plan to convert the old engine to a hydraulic system, increasing reliability and function and adding safety with the more modern braking system. By applying for a competitive grant through Golden Belt Community Foundation they were able to secure $3,000 towards their goal of $10,000.

SIMPLE. POWERFUL. PERSONAL. FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH CHARITABLE GIVING. OPTIONS FOR EVERY INTEREST IN PHILANTHROPY. “Golden Belt Community Foundation offers a highly personal approach to giving. DONOR ADVISED FUNDS

UNRESTRICTED FUNDS

FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS

A personal approach to giving. Establishing a Donor Advised Fund allows you to make a gift to your community foundation, then remain actively involved in suggesting uses for your gift. You can work with the community foundation’s professional program staff to suggest ongoing uses for the fund-targeting the issues you care about most. Grant awards are issued to charities in the name of the fund (or anonymously if you prefer). It’s a simple, powerful, and highly personal approach to giving.

Meeting ever-changing community needs. When you establish an Unrestricted Fund, your gift can address a broad range of local needs- including future needs that often cannot be anticipated at the time your gift is made. We evaluate all aspects of community well-being: arts and culture, economic development, education, environment, health and human services, neighborhood revitalization, and more. The flexibility of your unrestricted gift enables your community foundation’s program experts to respond to the community’s most pressing needs, today and tomorrow.

Connecting personal values to high-impact opportunities. By establishing a Field of Interest Fund, you can target your gift to address needs in an important area of community life. Arts. AIDS. Aging. At-risk youth. You identify your personal interest area when making your gift; our board awards grants to community organizations and programs that are making a difference in the area you select.Your gift stays flexible enough to meet community needs in your interest area-even as they change over time.

ENDOWING YOUR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION

Investing in deserving students. In creating a Scholarship, you invest in your community’s future and show students you care. Your community foundation provides the expertise to help you meet your personal goals and awards Scholarships to deserving students. Your gift can help students-from preschool to postgraduate-achieve their lifetime dreams.

Helping local organizations sustain and grow. Establishing a Designated Fund allows you to support the good work of a specific nonprofit organization-a senior center, museum, or virtually any nonprofit charitable organization. Because it’s given through your community foundation, your gift provides the organization you select not only funding, but planned giving and investment management services and the power of endowment.

Nonprofit organizations can also establish a Designated Fund or agency endowment at the community foundation. It’s a simple and efficient way to build an endowmentand help create sustainability-for your nonprofit organization. The community foundation’s experienced staff can also help your organization develop planned giving programs and assist with investment management and administrative details.

#GIVINGTUESDAY GIVE WHERE YOU LIVE.

FORWARD THINKING AND SUSTAINABILITY.

When the community foundation field turned 100 years old in 2014 Gold Belt Community Foundation decided to celebrate this milestone with a day of giving. Give Where You Live was created to recognize the importance of building endowment funds for our local charitable organizations and to encourage new gifts to these funds for their long-term support. With the spirit of Give Where You Live and the global phenomenon known as #GivingTuesday, GBCF invited the surrounding counties to celebrate on December 2, 2014.

nonprofit organizations and 10 communities, plus $30,000 that was donated anonymously as a matching pool. Groups turned in their gifts on Dec. 2, the national day designated as Giving Tuesday, and received a share of the match in proportion to the amount raised. Additional donations also provided $4,450 in prize grants, and the Foundation received $6,000 in gifts to other funds at the Golden Belt Community Foundation.

The outpouring of support for the Giving Tuesday campaign was in a word – overwhelming! The result was $127,245 raised for area endowments. That amount included donations submitted for endowed funds of 41

WHAT IS #GIVINGTUESDAY? #GivingTuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world came together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity. www.givingtuesday.org.

POWER OF THE #UNSELFIE

#un

selfie is a movement that takes this a step further. An ‘unselfie’ is a way to share the importance of charity and support for the life-changing work that charities do. Here’s how you can share an ‘unselfie’: Take a piece of paper and write the name of a charity you support with your time or money. Take your picture holding up the piece of paper in front of you. Upload the photo to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and other social media channels and remember to include the hashtags #GivingTuesday and #unselfie The aim of this movement is to inspire others to take part, to give time or money to charity and to work together for a better world.

KEEP 5 IN KANSAS A LITTLE PLANNING. A BIG IMPACT. A GIFT FOR THE FUTURE TO CREATE A LASTING LEGACY.

Think about what matters to you. Perhaps it’s the schools your children attend, or the hospital where you get your care. It could be the park where your grandchildren love to play, or a local charity that’s a big part of your life. What would you do to make sure the things that matter to you today have a secure future, long after you’re gone? How can you help ensure that future generations will benefit from the wonderful resources in your community? We have an opportunity in Kansas to turn our hopes for the future into reality! Our state is currently experiencing an unprecedented transfer of wealth. Studies show that by 2020, $79 billion will change hands from one generation to the next in Kansas. If we capture a portion of this wealth — even just 5% — by setting up endowments through community foundations, we could provide a permanent source of funding for local organizations and causes that will greatly improve the lives of Kansans.

It explores the leadership skills and capacities of Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties and presents the opportunity to work with area leaders to move our committees forward for the common good. A different type of leadership is necessary if we want to make progress on our communities’ biggest challenges. Leadership Golden Belt (LGB) was introduced to 27 more community members over 2013 and 2014. Attendees participated in eight oneday sessions with focuses on Learning, Thinking and Learning Styles, Servant Leadership and expanding their leadership capacities within their

respective counties. The program ended in Wichita for the Kansas Leadership Center Summit where Leadership groups from across Kansas gather for a unique learning opportunity and networking. Leadership Golden Belt 2015 will look a bit different with a variety of dates available for individuals and groups to attend Kansas Leadership Center’s You. Lead. Now. and Teaching Leadership. Grants are available through Leadership Golden Belt for the cost of registration and a per diem on lodging. This makes for an award total of $400. Dates are also being set for Leaders’ Luncheons for alumni to come together and encourage, cultivate and continue growing in their leadership skills.
