Editor’s Note

The Story of Home Just like the people dwelling within them, every home has a story. It begins the year it’s built, but if you want to go even deeper, there’s the date that the trees for the wood were cut. There’s the day the stones and bricks took shape. All of it goes to form the character and energy that holds life’s happenings. Like those inhabiting these spaces, homes change, grow, and evolve. And their stories also shift. One owner passes the keys to another. They change the flooring, wall color, and furnishings and make it their own.

This issue really focuses on those transformations. Renovations and renewal allow the move from one family or era to the next. And we’ve lined up quite a few interesting stories to share with you. We met up with Interior Designer Heather Jowers who walks us through one of her recent projects — Fabulous on 14th. The 1950s cottage is just blocks from the beach and Heather revived its look. She has this incredible ability to mix bold, bright colors with various textures that just work. It’s kind of like magic. Heather also wove in lots of fun, retro elements that take the decor to the next level. From there, we beeped over to real estate boss Pat Cooper’s house to see her newly redesigned home. If you’re like me, you probably wonder what the homes of real estate stars like Pat look like … so this is a treat. The fabulous Gail Butler, owner of Taylor House Interiors, helped Pat revamp her beautiful space, creating a sophisticated look with a chic, coastal flare. I am super excited to share it with you. Another residence we visited — dubbed the Pavilion in the Trees — has an interesting backstory that I discovered by a serendipitous

meeting with its owners, Kendrick and Sarah. Built in 1978, this property really epitomized the architecture of the era — just check out the flat roof and an open floor plan. And these two have really enjoyed learning about and sharing their home’s history. Like the Pavilion in the Trees, owners of another St. Simons home have also embraced a lush hideaway. Situated on the Retreat Golf Course, the Jules family’s backyard is an oasis with pictureperfect landscaping around their pool and patio. And finally, Assistant Editor Lauren McDonald headed out to HofwylBroadfield Historic Site, a former plantation built in the 1850s, to learn about a unique variety of camellias grown there. So settle into your favorite spot to enjoy the stories of these homes. With love — Lindsey

The Secret of Climbing Vines

T The first year, it sleeps. The second, it creeps.

The third, it leaps.

This nifty rhyme is how local landscape architect Jeff Homans describes the growth process to be expected when training vines to grow up the exterior surfaces of homes or garden walls. “A couple of years is typical for most any plant to get established, but as it does its growth rate increases,” he continues. “So one to two growing seasons is typical to establish something like a vine.” Since the COVID-19 began more than two years ago, many homeowners have invested significant time, money, and energy into improving their outdoors spaces at

home. Spending more time at home and limiting travel encouraged many to spruce up their home’s exteriors and interiors, and there are many ways to enhance backyards, gardens, and patio spaces.

M AY / JUN E 2022

17

“People are creating outdoor spaces that are somewhat taking the place of traveling elsewhere, so creating kind of resort-like settings with pools and patios and outdoor recreation, seating, fire pits, and outdoor living,” Homans says. One way many homeowners have added some new flare to their space is by training vines to grow up and along the walls of their homes or gardens. Homans, who works for Land Design Associates, based in Glynn County, recommends two kinds of evergreen vines that are best to train on walls or trellises in this area. Those are Confederate jasmine and lavender trumpet vines. “We recommend these because they’re hearty,” he says. “They’re fast growing and disease- and drought-resistant.” The best time to plant these vines is typically fall, he says, although if plantings are irrigated it can be done at any time of the year.

3413 FREDERICA RD | ST SIMONS ISLAND | 638-3641 www.pierceandparkerinteriors.com 18

GOLDEN I S LES

Vines can enhance home and garden walls and will soften the aesthetic of wood or masonry surfaces. “Where space is limited in terms of width, a vine can provide greenery and softening in small, tight spaces,” Homans says. It can be a challenge to train vines on walls, and Homans says a major obstacle some gardeners may confront will be a north facing wall that does not get direct sunlight, or a wide overhang, or house eave that prevents rain or sunlight from reaching the vine. “That can yield poor results, so the best situation is a south-facing wall that gets a lot of light,” Homans says. Standard upkeep includes watering on a regular basis, which will keep the vine lush and promote fast growth. Other maintenance will be trimming and pruning to keep the vine within the space the gardener intends. Land Design Associates provides consultation and design for residential landscape clients in and around Glynn County. A popular trend Homans has seen lately is the installation of stainless wire lattice in a diamond-shaped pattern, ideal for training Confederate jasmine. Homans also urges anyone considering this kind of project to avoid planting fig vine, as it’s an aggressive vine that is not well-suited to house walls. “It can grow into windows and into eaves, and grow inside the house. When it’s removed, it makes a mess,” he says. “It leaves marks that it takes a lot of work to repair. So that’s a vine I would recommend to plant on garden walls and structures away from a house. If it’s maintained correctly, it won’t cause any damage.”

Deterring Deer

W

WORDS BY TERRY DICKSON | PHOTO BY RICHARD KNIGHT

You can do that in the convenience of your own garden — unless you have deer in the neighborhood.

Deer will bypass some other very popular shrubs grown for their vibrant color including azaleas, oleanders, gardenias, Viburnum, Cassia, and bottle brush. They also won’t go after conifers such as cedar and junipers nor ornamental grasses,” Saunders says.

“Roses are deer food,” says Chris Saunders, owner of Saunders Landscape Services on St. Simons Island.

Although undaunted by the rose’s thorns, deer won’t eat prickly cedar, he said.

“We do a tremendous amount of installation of shrubs,” and roses are among the plants that deer love to eat, he adds.

Also, the maturity of the plant matters. Although Pittosporum is a popular food for deer, it has can grow to 14to-18 feet putting it out of reach. A deer typically won’t reach higher than four feet for food.

We are always admonished to enjoy life at a less hurried pace, to stop and smell the roses.

He advises customers on which plants deer don’t find tasty, but some of the more popular and showy shrubs are high on deer menus. His top five list of “deer food” are Pittosporum, hibiscus, camellias, roses, and hydrangeas. Deer especially like to eat the tender buds off rose bushes before they have a chance to bloom and will gnaw off the new shoots.

Camellias can grow large too, but they are slow-growing and retain their lower branches and blossom all the way to the ground. Saunders noted there are a lot of beautiful camellias on the north end of St. Simons where deer dwell in abundance. But some simply don’t survive the onslaught, such as the 60 he planted in a fenced area.

Deer seem to have to sample fatsia, a plant with white blooms and showy leaves, before making up their minds to move on.

“He must have come back every night until he got them all,” Saunders says.

“They sometimes nibble on it, but won’t devour it,” Saunders says.

It is clear, however, that deer don’t always subscribe to the list of foods they don’t like.

When talking about plants and deer, Summers seems to use the word “usually”a lot as in, “Angelonia, they don’t eat, usually,” she says. “One plant I’ve never had them eat is one called bush daisy,” she says. And deer “usually” don’t eat society garlic, although Summers said they were the prime suspects in eating her mother’s plants.

Like Saunders, she said deer will eat even “safe” food when they’re hungry. After Hurricanes Matthew and Irma, there were few berries and acorns so deer added more shrubbery and flowers to their diets to survive, she says.

“They will eat begonias. They will eat pansies,” she says. But snap dragons, she says, are considered deer tolerant. “Mostly, I try to plant things they don’t like, but people sometimes have to have their roses,” Summers says.

Unlike Saunders, Karen Summers of Coastal Bloomers doesn’t have the luxury of waiting for plants to grow beyond a deer’s reach because she plants a lot of plant beds.

If people insist on planting things popular with deer, Summers recommends using sprays that discourage them. She said people can expect to get some damage as the island develops. If a formerly wooded area is cleared for a subdivision, deer will move into neighborhoods and browse on the landscape, she adds.

Cabaret to bring

Margaritaville to Isles WORDS BY TAYLOR COOPER | PHOTOS BY LAUREN ROBERTS Since transitioning into a fully professional orchestra, the Coastal Symphony of Georgia has relied more than ever on the generosity of its donors to continue culturally enriching the region with its melodies. Well-known among the orchestra aficionados in the coastal region is the symphony’s annual black-tie gala, Cabaret, which is where most of the fundraising for the group happens. It’s organized by the symphony’s fundraising division, the Symphony Society, and while the event does feature performances, “It’s not a show; it’s a gala, a party,” says Sharon Flores, executive director of the Symphony Society board. “In the past, the gala has been black tie and it’s been at The Cloister (at Sea Island). We start with cocktail hour, then there’s a silent auction, a seated dinner, entertainment, and sometimes there’s dancing.” Like just about everything else, however, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a drastic change to the 18-year-old event. In the midst of 2021, moving the event outside seemed an obvious choice given the guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control, Flores explains. Despite — or perhaps because of — that choice, 2021 was the most 24

GOLDEN I S LES

successful Cabaret to date, Flores says. “It’s the excitement after the last couple of years, since people are now able to get back together,” Flores says. “But then, it’s always been an event for folks to look forward to.” Coming up with the décor wasn’t hard, she says. Given the climate, it’s hard to find a more apt outdoor theme than a tropical one. “Last year it was Aloha, Hawaii. This year we’re headed down to Key West and Margaritaville,” Flores says. “With COVID still around, we decided this could be another year to be outside. Thinking about what would be fun for everyone, we just decided ‘Let’s plan an escape to Margaritaville.’” What would Margaritaville be without its creator, Jimmy Buffett? He won’t be there in the flesh but expect plenty of the music to reflect his signature brand of island escapist fantasy. Escape to Margaritaville will be held at 6 p.m. May 20 at the King & Prince Beach and Golf Resort on St. Simons Island. “We might even have a Jimmy Buffett sing-along. I think

the demographic for Cabaret would know the words to the music,” Flores says with a chuckle. On St. Simons Island, the ambiance couldn’t be more on-point. “The fun part about the location at the King & Prince (the venue for Cabaret 2022), for both last year’s theme of Hawaii and this year’s theme of Key West, you’re dining by the ocean and can hear the waves crashing,” Flores said.

Happy hour is from 2:00-6:00 daily!

Among guests, the difference was immediately noticeable, and even more so when compared to other events that maintained a more formal atmosphere.

OPEN FOR LUNCH & DINNER Tues–Thurs 11:30 - 9:00 | Fri–Sat 11:30 - 10:00 Sun–Mon Closed

Chad Goehring has been enjoying Cabaret for around eight years. Several of the members of the Symphony Society’s board were in the Rotary Club, and when Goehring, an architect who runs the local office of Atlanta-based Harris Design, joined the Rotary Club of St. Simons Island, Goehring said they were on the lookout for younger professionals to attend the event. The first seven Cabarets were fantastic, he said, but the atmosphere was much different and more alive than some similar event, like the American Cancer Society’s Victory Gala, which he also supports.

12 Market Street | St Simon’s Island, Georgia 31522 www.dorothysssi.com | 912-268-4813

“One thing we noticed is that it’s a black tie event, it’s at The Cloister usually, and it’s a more mature audience,” said Goehring. “Nothing good or bad really, but going to Cabaret it was a different atmosphere and very dynamic.”

Power is in Ownership . . . Wealth is in the land

Along with the change in venue comes a change in attire. When planning a get-up, don’t think black-tie.

“It’s ‘elegant island dress,’ versus the normal,” says Flores. “At some point, we’ll possibly go back to what we normally do, but last year they seemed to enjoy the outdoor casualness of the evening. I think, when you add the casual atmosphere, that brings another bit of excitement to the whole evening.” But as Flores says, it’s more than just a show. The night will also feature both a live and silent auction, the proceeds from which will go to the Symphony. “The live auction usually has several trips, adventures for people with higher ticket value than the silent auction,” Flores says. “We have had trips to Tuscany, Italy. This last Cabaret we had trips to Maui in Hawaii” Goehring nearly won the auction for the trip to Italy, which he and his wife wanted to use as an opportunity to give their friends — who were dealing with their child’s cancer diagnosis — a vacation as well.

“We did not win the bid, but Sharon (Flores) came up to us and said ‘The owner of the house is here,’” Goehring says. “Sonia was in from Italy. She said ‘Sonia would be happy to host another group in Capri for another weekend if we paid for the item.’ It was certainly life-changing for me, my wife, and our friends.” The silent auction traditionally features items donated by local businesses, and the same is true this year. Those signed up receive a full-color catalog of all items in the action, at least 100 in total. Goehring could not say enough about how much he enjoyed the event. It’s a good time, and it’s for a cause that’s easy to support — the Symphony of Coastal Georgia specifically and arts in the Isles generally. “It was one of the most wonderful events we’ve ever gone to,” Goehring says. “Great music, wonderful entertainment, the live auction was one of the best we’ve ever been to. The auctioneer was a lot of fun, great participation from the crowd. My wife and I have put it on our calendar since then.” For more information, visit coastalsymphonyofgeorgia. org/cabaret-2022.

“My wife loves jewelry and ever since we have been married, she has hoped for a pair of diamond earrings. Each birthday, Christmas, Valentines day, and anniversary she secretly hoped I would surprise her with a pair. Yet, our 25th wedding anniversary came and went and the only jewelry she ever received from me was her wedding ring from the day we said "I do." The problem was, I have always been intimidated by the idea of purchasing jewelry. First, the price, it just all seemed so expensive.... second, I always felt like I was being taken advantage of by paying a high price for a sub-quality item. How did I really know what I was getting? Who could I trust? As a educator and coach for 29 years, I worked very hard to make an honest living. We have two kids in college and normal bills to top it off. The thought of spending money on jewelry was almost incomprehensible. Or so I thought... Until I met Zoe Herrington, from Noble House Jewelry, and that all changed. Unlike any other jewelry store I have ever stepped foot in, she highly encouraged me to shop and compare prices. Apples to apples. She wanted me to see the authentic value of my purchase. In addition, Noble House Jewelry had a huge inventory to choose from, no matter the type of jewelry I might be considering. Zoe was kind, courteous, and took a great deal of time with me to help me pick out just the right item for the long awaited gift to my wife. Diamond earrings. A pair that was top quality, fit my budget, and was less expensive than I ever imagined. I was the most confident I have ever been in a jewelry store. Needless to say, the diamond earrings were a big surprise and a huge hit. Once opening the box, my wife's exact response was " I absolutely love them!...But how can we afford these beautiful diamond earrings?" I assured her that it was only possible because I finally met someone in the jewelry business that I could trust. As a result, I was able to purchase her dream earrings at a price we could afford. It was a win-win! From here on out, even if we move away from Saint Simons Island, Ga, there is only one place I will ever buy jewelry from again, and that is from Zoe at Noble House.” – Coach Trent Mongero

Blessing of the Fleet Brunswick’s

S

boasts deep roots in Portuguese culture

WORDS BY TAYLOR COOPER | PHOTOS BY BOBBY HAVEN

For the last 83 years, the city of Brunswick’s shrimpers have gone to the pastor of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church to receive God’s blessing on Mother’s Day weekend. Like the city of Darien’s banner event, Brunswick has a history of throwing a big festival surrounding the annual ceremony. Over the decades, however, the event’s popularity waned. “I’d still go down there and bless the boats. We kept it alive without all the pageantry,” says St. Francis’ pastor, Father Tim McKeown. “With COVID over the past couple of years, it’s been scaled back. The blessing has been on Saturday with some type of festival and we have the Mass here on Sunday.” It wasn’t until 2017 that the party came back to Brunswick’s blessing, and it will return again this year from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 7 and 8 in Mary Ross Waterfront Park. “Traditionally, it’s been centered on the Mother’s Day weekend,” says McKeown. “It is kind of twofold. There’s the 28

blessing of the shrimp boats, of course. The second half is on Mother’s Day, when we have a Sunday Mass. “We do the opening and closing hymn in Portuguese and have a statue of the Lady of Fatima from Portugal, a recreation of the statue, and we have a procession around Hanover Square with the statue.” The whole idea of processions is very popular in the European world, especially the Catholic world. It’s like making a procession to a holy place. The most famous would be the Camino in Spain, he says. Brunswick’s procession around Hanover is a powerful display of faith and community, McKeown says, and ties back to Portuguese families who immigrated to the U.S. in the years following World War I. “I would hazard to say a majority of the shrimpers going back, 75, 50 years ago had Portuguese ties,” McKeown says. “They brought that custom with them that you had your shrimp boats blessed for a good fishing season.”

City resident Mary Theresa outlined for The Brunswick News in 2018 the story of many Portuguese families who came to the U.S. through Ellis Island. The northern climates did not agree with them, so they traveled to the South, abundant in warm salt air. It was in Fernandina Beach that the American shrimping industry really got its start, but it quickly spread to other coastal areas, including Brunswick, Theresa relayed. Old traditions even dictate who can carry the Lady Fatima statue in the procession. According to McKeown, the statue was made from wood brought over from Brazil — which has deep Portuguese ties, itself. Bearers have to be of Portuguese descent and of a certain age to be a statue bearer. For many local shrimpers who don’t boast those ties to Portuguese culture, the event has little religious significance. They still enjoy it, of course, but have a more practical view. Decorating the ships, covering them with flags and refreshing the paint costs a bundle but is worth it. “I love it,” says Johnny Ray Bennett, who owns a few shrimp boats docked at the City Market dock of Bay Street in Brunswick. “I get to have all the fun. I have the preacher (McKeown) on the boat. He sprinkles everyone and I go home.” For more information on the Brunswick Blessing of the Fleet, visit facebook.com/brunswickblessingofthefleet.

DUE SOUTH who stepped in and out of my years to drop an encouragement or instruction. Without any of them, I doubt I would have found my way as a writer. My first year out of college, I met a man so accomplished and successful that he would become my “master’s degree” in how to trudge through life’s setbacks and disappointments then quickly discard them. His name was Don Light. He was part of a group of pioneers who transformed Nashville from what they then called “hillbilly music” into universally popular music. The Grand Ole Opry had never allowed drums but somewhere around 1965, Don Light — everyone called him by two names — became the Opry’s regular drummer then he stretched his wings to open a talent agency to book acts for dates and then, because of one guy, became a talent manager who strategized the artist’s career. Today, we call it “building a brand.”

one who hadn’t been quite honorable. I took myself to the back porch, sat down and asked, “What would Pop do?” That’s what I always called one of St. Simons’ most respected men. I imagined I was sitting in his office and, across the desk, he was slumped casually in his swivel chair, listening intently then, quick as a wink, he summed up the situation with a piece of brilliant wisdom.

Don Light collected lighthouses and visited many. By the time I met him in the mid-1980s, he walked at a 70-degree angle because of a condition that had deteriorated his spine. Another medical problem had taken most of his colon and yet another damaged his lungs, making it hard to breathe or talk. He always carried a bottle of water and took a sip every few breaths. Despite these physical impediments, he was one of the most successful people I have ever encountered. In Nashville, he’s legendary — even being inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame — and in many lives, like mine, his wisdom lives on. Several years before Don Light died, he visited the Golden Isles for Jekyll’s annual New Year’s Bluegrass Festival because he managed Vincent and Daly, one of Bluegrass’s most successful acts.

Something like, “Get out now and be grateful you learned early before you got in too deep. This is good. Not bad.”

“That lighthouse on St. Simons may be my favorite yet,” he said in a phone call the next week. “I climbed to the top.”

My early life was shaped by the teachings of my mountain people, including Mama and Daddy, who were calloused and grizzled by life’s trials and tribulations. Others were the school teachers

I nearly dropped the phone. I’ve been to the top a couple of times and it was arduous. “You’re kiddin’ me,” I replied.

His reply was his common sense. “Why would I visit such a historic lighthouse and not climb to the top?” To the end of his life, a small replica of the St. Simon’s lighthouse set on the console behind his desk in his Nashville office. Now, every time I see the St. Simon’s lighthouse, I think of Don Light. And, almost always, I think of an invaluable lesson he taught me: how to weather through a “no.” In the late 1960s, Don Light became friends with a writer at Billboard, an industry trade magazine. The guy also played part time at a Nashville club, so he invited Don to hear him. “There was a charisma about him on stage that I have seldom seen. I believed he could be a star, so I asked him to let me manage him.” For almost four years, Don hauled the singer around to record labels and tried to get him a deal. “Every label in Nashville turned us down three times and some turned us down four times.” He shrugged. “It didn’t bother me, though. It took about six months to make the rounds then I’d start over again. Those labels changed management so often that I figured that, sooner or later, I’d find someone who’d say ‘yes.’ They couldn’t all be that dumb.”

Classic American Diner 203 Edwards Plaza

Finally, Don Gantt at ABC/Dot records said “yes” and the rest is a billion-dollar history.

One popular recent trend is “flex rooms,” which can be used for remote working, separate study rooms for children, or a home gym. While some buyers prefer to have a game or media room.” Prior to the pandemic, it was typically only adults who had these types of allocated workspaces, but with home schooling becoming such a major factor in the lives of so many, homeowners have started to keep an eye out for these options.

The Best of the best: Luxury home trends

L

WORDS BY LINDSEY ADKISON | PHOTO BY JOE LOEHLE

Lewis Glenn understands the allure of the Golden Isles better than many. The managing broker of Sea Island Properties, based on St. Simons Island, has been vacationing in the area since the 1950s. “I’ve been coming here since I was seven years old. I’ve spent summer vacations here for many, many years,” he says. “We bought a house on Sea Island in 2005.” Professionally, Glenn spent the majority of his real estate career in the Atlanta luxury market. He served as President of Harry Norman Realtors for fourteen years before moving to the Golden Isles. His experience with both locations — and the fabulous properties they boast — makes him a resident enthusiast and knowledgeable on the latest in home design trends. And there are several elements that he’s noticed in recent years. “The main thing buyers are looking for is location, which can include marsh view, ocean or lake views, or close proximity to amenities such as schools, dining, recreation, and history. This is an incredible community in which to live,

36

GOLDEN I S LES

work, and play,” Glenn says. “There are so many things to do, from boating, fishing, golfing, getting involved with community non-profits, or simply walking the beach. The Golden Isles is so welcoming and we are all blessed and fortunate to live in such a beautiful and natural environment.” As residents build their lives, they want a home that supports them. Glenn says that the design elements featured in the luxury market, also appeal to buyers across the board. “Buyers today want open floor living space that is conducive for entertaining family and friends. That’s very important,” he says. Glenn also indicates that in 2022, property owners want to utilize the latest in clean energy options and cutting-edge technologies. That includes everything from top-of-the-line appliances, flooring, beamed ceilings, window treatments, security systems and lightning fast internet. “Security is important today, as is privacy,” he says. But even with a move toward modernization, many home buyers are looking for time-honored features that have always been popular. For instance, Glenn says that many of his clients still prefer that the primary bedroom be on the main level. They are also searching for rooms with ample storage and stellar views, and a fireplace in the bedroom for an extra bit of luxury. “Walk-in closets, well-designed and spacious bathrooms,” he lists. “A lot of buyers don’t want a primary suite on the main level, but from a resale perspective, it is really nice to have.”

While house hunters’ must-haves vary, there is one element that is typically sought by everyone — a fabulous space for outdoor leisure and entertainment with privacy. Glenn says that can include a landscaped pool area, fireplace, and an outdoor kitchen. “A pool is not a necessity, but families love that outdoor feature,” he says. “You can have built-ins with a grill and plenty of outdoor seating coupled with exterior or moon lighting is also popular.” In Glenn’s profession, he’s privy to the crème de la crème when it comes to homes in the Golden Isles. And one of the key features he’s noticed in recent years is a guest home that can accommodate visiting friends and family. “We’re very fortunate on our island to have of the best residential architects and home designers on the East Coast to guide and assist buyers with creating a functional and sustainable home that is comfortable and coincides with a buyer’s lifestyle,” he says. — Lewis Glenn is the managing broker of Sea Island Properties, 351 Sea Island Road, St. Simons Island. LIVING WELL Aggressive brushing is a problem for a lot of us, and often times, we don’t even realize how hard we are brushing. The truth is that this aggressive brushing can actually harm your teeth and gums by eroding some of the hard enamel that protects the tooth from cavities and decay. We always recommend a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mildly abrasive toothpaste when brushing. If aggressive brushing is a problem for you, it might be time to consider an electric toothbrush. With an electric toothbrush, users do not have to brush back and forth but simply guide the brush through the quadrants of the mouth and the tiny vibrations do the cleaning. • If your gums bleed when you floss, it’s best to leave them alone.

Dental Myths Busted

S

WORDS BY DR. MAC MORRISON | PHOTO BY NANCY REYNOLDS

Summertime is a great time to recommit to taking better care of ourselves. At the beginning of the year, we all vow to exercise more and eat a more balanced diet, so checking in mid-way through the year is a great way to take stock of our progress. When evaluating our health goals, it is important to remember our oral health too. The mouth is the gateway to the body and maintaining good oral health can help prevent other health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. In our dental practice, we hear all kinds of myths regarding our oral health. We would like to debunk some of these myths:

38

GOLDEN I S LES

• My teeth are not hurting. There is no need for a dental checkup. This is a huge misconception that we have all heard our friends repeat. Our teeth, just like any other asset we value, must be maintained. Properly brushing and flossing are vital to remove the plaque that forms naturally every day. Even if you’re the most devoted brusher and flosser, there may be parts of your teeth that are difficult to reach where plaque can build up over time, turning into calculus. Calcium buildup can lead to gum disease and cavities. Your dentist and hygienist have tools and techniques necessary to remove all plaque and calculus from your teeth. The thing to understand is that you can not always feel cavities and gum disease. If you wait until a cavity hurts, you could end up needing a root canal or an extraction that could have been prevented with regular checkups. The point of going to the dentist is to protect your teeth and notice things before they become an issue. • The harder you brush, the cleaner you’ll get your teeth.

Absolutely not. Inflammation is the cause of bleeding gums. This happens when bacteria and plaque get stuck in between our teeth. Over time the bacteria build up and cause the gums to become inflamed. Think about getting a splinter in your finger. We get swelling and soreness, and when we extract the splinter, our finger bleeds. This is our body’s way of healing. The same is true for our gums. We might have soreness, swelling, or bleeding in the gums, especially after flossing. Much like the splinter in your finger, your body is trying to irrigate the food, plaque, and bacteria in your gums with this inflammation and bleeding. When we mechanically stimulate our gums by flossing, it triggers this inflammation response. When you begin flossing regularly, you may experience some bleeding at first, but the more you floss, the less bleeding you will have. • Diet sodas are okay to drink because they don’t have sugar in them. And when it comes to cavities, sugar is the main culprit. When people think of cavities, they generally think about the culprit being sugary drinks or sweet and sticky treats. While sugar does have a direct relationship to tooth decay, there are many other things we eat that can lead to tooth decay. For instance, crackers and chips may be even worse for your teeth. The starchiness of these carbohydrates has sugars that break down the teeth and these treats really stick in between your teeth. And while diet sodas don’t have

cavity-causing sugars in them, they are very acidic. Our mouths have acid-loving bacteria that contribute to cavities. The acid in diet soda eats away at the enamel of the tooth causing sensitivity. Besides soda, other acidic beverages like orange juices can cause similar damage. To stay hydrated, water is your best option. • My teeth are unhealthy because I am aging. Aging is not an automatic factor in deteriorating oral health. Those who take care of their teeth during their childhood and adult years will still have healthy teeth in their senior years. Similarly, just because you are young doesn’t mean your teeth are healthy. We have seen plenty of cases where patients in their 20s and 30s have such severe dental decay that they have to rely on dentures and bridges. In general, oral hygiene is important, no matter your age. • Be Proactive About Your Dental Care We encourage you to be proactive in keeping your teeth healthy. Putting off regular dental check-ups will likely lead to problems. A little time invested each day can save you countless hours of trouble, not to mention money, in the future — To learn more about improving your dental hygiene, contact Golden Isles Dental Associates. Georgia Coastal Bird Ambassadors WORDS BY LYDIA THOMPSON ing them fly? I love to see them fly.” This is where I step into my role as the coordinator of Shorebird Stewards. I have been working to educate beachgoers to shorebirds for years. The number one rule in my stewardship training guide is — no yelling at the hapless visitor; they do not know. Yelling makes you the bad guy who is spoiling their fun. However, if you point out a little whitish sandpiper as a Sanderling, it will become our ambassador. It is an opportunity to talk about the importance of these birds.

W We call them sandpipers. Actually, they are known as “shorebirds” because they live on the edges of the world’s oceans and wetlands. There are many types of sandpipers and the poster child for our shorebirds are Sanderlings. They are the little black and white birds scurrying along the waterline on the beach. Our Georgia coast is one of the places where they winter, but other Sanderlings are just passing through. They come from their winter home at the southern tip of South America and are traveling

For years, I did this conservation work all by myself. Then, in 2011, I received help from the Jekyll Island Foundation. I created training lessons to help volunteers talk about these incredible birds. Along the way, I met Abby Sterling, a PhD candidate, who studied the nesting habits of Wilson’s Plovers. During the years working on Little St. Simons Island, she also worked as a steward. She got her PhD in Shorebird Biology. Manomet, a non-profit shorebird organization, hired her to head the Georgia Bight Shorebird Conservation Initiative. She is coordinating with the shorebird conservation groups on our coast. We began working together and call the volunteer group Georgia Coastal Shorebird Ambassadors.

on to the frozen tundra of the Arctic. It is mind-boggling how far they travel. Sanderlings are just one of the many types of pipers on our beaches. As the tide falls at Gould’s Inlet, look over the sandbar, and there are hundreds of them. And they’re not all alike. Each type of sandpiper has its spot on the sandbar. Long-legged Willets are wading in the shallows. Dunlins and Semipalmated Plovers are feeding in the wet sand. They all find time to rest on the dry sand to prepare for the nonstop flight to the arctic. If you are not a birder, you are not aware of what these birds go through to get here and what they will encounter as they travel. “You mean that little bird just came from South America?” the beach walking visitor asked incredulously. This is something I hear when I put on my shorebird ambassador hat. “Yes,” I reply. “It is hard to fathom a little bird taking off and flying non-stop to the Arctic, but they do.” The beach visitor continues, “Oh, I thought they lived here year-round. I always see them here on the beach. What is the harm in mak-

Around the same time, Wilson’s Plovers and Least Terns were using the open dunes at Gould’s Inlet to nest. The area was roped off. We worked together to gather a group of volunteers. From April through August, the patrol is talking to folks on the beach about shorebirds. This year, Abby Sterling recruited Allie Hayser, a Shorebird Biologist on Tybee Island. She is working on a similar project up at Tybee Island. It is wonderful to be a part of this conservation work. Georgia Coastal Bird Ambassadors are looking to recruit volunteers and establish a stewardship program to teach beach users about shorebirds, seabirds, and the importance of natural barrier island habitats. Stewards will be equipped with vests, guides, and handouts. In addition, Manomet’s staff will be training, leading birding walks, field trips, and hosting virtual programs to help our volunteers learn about shorebirds, the Georgia Bight, and what we can do to help balance the needs of wildlife and humans. Waiting for the Bubble to Pop

The Price of Procrastination

T

WORDS BY KEN SAUSEDO

There once was a day when buyers in the housing market had the luxury of taking their time in making a home purchase. There were more houses and condos to choose from and more room to negotiate between the asking price and sales price. What we have experienced in recent years has been the polar opposite. Inventories are tighter and when prime properties do hit the market, they are usually gone in a matter of days, if not hours. In those cases, the window to consider options and make decisions is much smaller, and in this seller’s market, buyers have to be ready to act quickly. There’s no denying that buying a property on such short notice is nerve-wracking and that a buyer has to be ready to assume some risk to reap a great reward. However, there is a price to pay for procrastination, and deliberating too long can be costly.

The Affordability Gap One thing that has aided this housing

42

GOLDEN I S LES

boom has been the historically low mortgage interest rates, which have dipped as low as one percent for a 15 year loan. While this extraordinary market has seen an increase of all-cash buyers, obtaining a conventional loan is still the first option for many aspiring homeowners. Those looking to obtain a mortgage in 2022 will likely see those interest rates start to rise, which will directly affect the affordability gap. The affordability gap is the difference between the median selling price of a home and the amount a buyer can afford to pay for it. A rise in interest rates means the buyer will have a higher monthly payment. Depending on the amount financed, a one percent rise in interest could mean your monthly payment will increase by triple digits and will cost you thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. In addition, when interest rates rise, the amount you can afford to pay for a home decreases considerably. In simple terms, the longer you wait to buy a home, the more you risk paying more dollars for less house.

The Second Home Hurdle Second home and vacation home purchases make up a good portion of the real estate market in the Golden Isles. Unfortunately for those buyers, recent changes enacted by the Federal Housing Finance Agency will directly affect their pocketbooks. Effective April 1, 2022, new upfront fees will be imposed on high balance and second home loans sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. For second home loans, those fees will increase between 1.125 percent and 3.875 percent depending on the loanto-value ratio. Under these new rules, the buyer of a second home with a $400,000 mortgage and a loan-to-value ratio of 70 percent will pay an additional fee of

Many home shoppers remember what happened in the early part of the 2000s when buyers bought at the top of the market, only to see prices come crashing down in 2008. In the past couple of years, housing values have gone through the roof with many markets seeing double-digit increases in home values. Today’s buyers don’t want to repeat the mistakes of the 2008 crash, so they are deliberately waiting for this housing bubble to pop and home values to come down. However, experts in the field say that is not likely to happen. According to Ivy Zelman of Zelman and Associates, a research and investment firm dedicated exclusively to the housing industry, we will begin to see a “deceleration” trend in the coming years, not a “depreciation” trend. In other words, homes will continue to appreciate, just not at the rate we have witnessed in the last year or two. Waiting too long in this present real estate market can result in paying more dollars out of pocket. Buyers who are looking for this bubble to pop may find themselves disappointed and having to pay the biggest price of all for their procrastination — losing out on the home of their dreams. — Ken Sausedo, GRI ABR® SRS PSA, is a REALTOR® with Signature Properties Group on St. Simons Island. uring a time when our health is a constant topic of concern and conversation, it’s important to remember that “health” means more than what we eat and how much weight we can lift. The keys to staying healthy include keeping an active routine, staying in touch with those we love, and finding ways to engage in things we like to do, too. And sometimes as older adults it can be difficult to maintain those routines and preserve an active lifestyle as our abilities change.

60 and up experience a strong sense of belonging and a network of friends who provide support for sustained health and wellbeing. Through fun, safe and engaging programs, activities and events, members can increase their self-confidence and sense of achievement while building relationships and celebrating the successes and milestones of others. The Golden Isles YMCA also offers special membership rates for adults over 60, as well as income-based assistance to ensure that no one is ever turned away based on an inability to pay for a membership.

Pickleball Tournament coming to Isles

I

WORDS BY SEBASTIAN EMANUEL | PHOTO BY BARBARA NORTHRUP

If you live on St. Simons Island or reside in the Glynn County area, you likely already know about the dedicated pickleball courts on Mallery Street. After establishing the courts on March 5, 2021, and hosting multiple local tournaments and free clinics to bring people out to enjoy the sport, the biggest event yet is set to take place on the island.

doubles, all with skill levels and age brackets dedicated. One of the biggest ambassadors for the growth of the sport locally is Bill Carmichael. Carmichael’s role reached new heights when he wanted to expand from having local tournaments, such as the September Morn, with 60 players from Glynn County, McIntosh County, and North Florida participating. After a friend was able to get him in touch with the Georgia Pickleball Association (GPA) about co-hosting a tournament, a survey was sent out to over 700 members. In the survey, the members identified St. Simons Island as one of the premier destinations to have a statewide pickleball tournament.

Now, the St. Simons Island Pickleball Club, along with the Georgia Pickleball Association, will play host to a statewide tournament May 14 and15.

“We have joined together to conduct this program,” Carmichael says. “We are anticipating 150 players, with roughly 100 of those to not be from Glynn County.”

The statewide tournament will feature men’s and women’s doubles and mixed

spoke with the Golden Isles Convention and Business Bureau. In the conversation, an estimation of roughly $480 will be spent daily (by couples) and as much as $100,000 in economic impact on the county, all while costing the county zero dollars for the promotion and management of the tournament. Carmichael plans to play in the tournament, if his elbow allows him, but if sidelined he will help out in any way possible for the biggest event to date for the St. Simons Pickleball Tournament. Two players who will be competing at two entirely different levels are Jonathan Haney and Trina Davis. For Haney, his mother, Bonnie, “the pickleball queen,” as he shared, and his brother, Mark, introduced him to the game five years ago. Davis had friends from Atlanta who enjoyed playing the sport and she decided to give it a try to meet new people after moving to the island, the place her husband, Jim, called home once before. “I think anyone with a tennis, squash, or

other racquet sports background will take to pickleball like a fish to water,” Haney says. “I played a lot of competitive junior tennis, so I think the transition just comes naturally. Pickleball also has some hand-eye speed and coordination similar to ping pong, which I’ve always loved as a result of my grandad, Cas.” After picking up the sport in the summer of 2021, Davis joined a free clinic Carmichael put together and fell in love with pickleball. Although she says she’s not the most athletic person and never got into a sport, her skills on the pickleball court have amazed her husband and kids. Now, she’s ready to take part in the tournament, even if she’s still a beginner.

“I’m sure it will be quite humbling for me, but I do it for the fun, the exercise, and the camaraderie,” Davis says. “Winning … that’s a bonus and I’m sure in a tournament situation there are going to be some really competitive people. You hear it all the time on the pickleball court, ‘We are here to have fun’ and that’s really how I feel about it.” With his years of experience on the court and sitting at a higher level of competition, Haney is excited for the tournament. “Tournaments are fun for me. There are always some nerves I think for anyone, but I’ve learned over many tennis and golf tournaments over the years, that’s what separates the field. Some people can channel the nerves positively and use it as fuel, and some cannot. It’s a good chance to test your skills against other good players and I welcome the challenge,” Haney says. “I would say it’s more excitement for me than nerves. A bit like Christmas morning as a kid. Even if you lose, you win by getting fresh air, exercise, fellowship, and can learn how to get better while gaining experience.” While the game will continue to grow in popularity, both Davis and Haney agree that Carmichael has played a huge role in growing the sport on the island and will continue to do so in the future. “Bill is always there and he is one of the first people I met,” Davis says. “He hosts and invites a couple of coaches who teach lessons and do free clinics. I watched a few Youtube videos and I went to the free clinic, and they do a great job of connecting people via email. You can find other new people who want to learn how to play like you and then you meet people and start playing. Bill is very instrumental and he wants to grow the sport.” “Bill has been very instrumental in growing the game in St. Simons,” Haney adds. “Organizing group emails, events, tournaments, clinics, and now a state-wide event. He also spearheaded the building and expansion of the new courts at Mallery Street which were a much-needed addition. Frankly, there is still a need for more courts as more people are enjoying and taking to the game.” — For more information on the tournament or the St. Simons Pickleball Club, email ssipickleball@yahoo.com

THE DISH I moved to New York City with some close friends of mine ... and we started cooking.” From there, the world become Bellizzi’s culinary oyster. He worked with incredibly famous chefs at some of the trendiest establishments in NYC. Along the way, Bellizzi soaked up all the knowledge he could, not only embracing flavors and techniques, but also methods these top culinarians used to manage their kitchens. “… there is just an incredible level of finesse. Everything is at such a high level. It changes the way you see restaurants and food. Things are taken much more seriously. There’s much more thought that goes into everything that’s done there,” he says.

As a child in upstate New York, Aaron Bellizzi didn’t envision himself becoming a highly-acclaimed chef living on the Georgia Coast. But fate has a way of charting unexpected journeys. That’s certainly how Bellizzi’s culinary path began. “I guess I fell into cooking,” he says with a laugh, settling into a chair in the Westin Jekyll Island’s oceanfront dining room. “I was in my early 20s and had a job working at an oyster bar. I was shucking

oysters. I would pop the top off and make it flip into the garbage. This chef saw what I was doing and he noticed that I could move well in the kitchen — and that I was having fun, so he took to me.” It turns out this particular chef had an impressive career, working in Michelin star restaurants prior to meeting Bellizzi. “... I had never heard of that at the time,” he recalls grinning. But it wouldn’t take long before he’d be working alongside plenty of world-renowned chefs with Michelin stars. The chef Bellizzi befriended eventually helped him apply to the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA). “He had gone to the CIA and offered to write me a letter of recommendation, which got me into school. And my parents were kind enough to support me in that endeavor,” he says. “So two weeks later, I was moving up to Poughkeepsie, New York. I spent two years up there, doing the associate’s program and two years doing the bachelor’s program. After graduation,

After spending years in some of the world’s best restaurants (and many a winter in the frigid northeast), Bellizzi decided it was time for a change of scenery. His search landed him at the Forbes five-star restaurant The Georgian Room at the Cloister on Sea Island. “I was looking to get out of NYC and I knew I wanted to go somewhere to see the water,” he says. Of course, the coronavirus pandemic changed most things in life, Bellizzi’s plans included. But after running his own business, Local Brew, through the lockdown, he eventually connected with Kevin Runner, general manager at the Westin on Jekyll Island. “I met Kevin and his team here ... and they offered me the opportunity to run the food program in conjunction with Shannon Devlin who runs the beverage program,” Bellizzi says. He signed on as the executive chef at the Westin’s restaurant, The Reserve, in August 2021. Since that time, he’s been hard at work reimagining the steakhouse’s menu. And he’s grateful to have had the support of the full management team as he continues to further develop the concept. To do that, Bellizzi has looked to one of his New York City mentors for inspiration. “Chef Tom Colicchio was a mentor of mine. He’s a great, great chef. I love what he was doing at his steakhouse called Craft in New York City. So I’ve always looked to it as a model,” he says. Some of the practices he picked up includes utilizing whole, select pieces of top-quality meats and embracing bold, bone-in flavor. “We don’t slice the steak. We work with larger cuts and cook the meat on

the bone. We’re looking forward to getting into more of the butchery side, doing more of the aging of the meats,” he says. “We’re using it to create our own select sauces and marinades, as well.” He’s also bringing his broad experience to craft dishes for those with dietary restrictions, including gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. “We won’t stray too far but it’s always nice to have something for everyone and something that works across the board,” he says.

sunchokes, washed lbs butter 1 /25 qt. white onions, sliced pt cream gal water pt Arborio rice each white onion tsp garlic cup white wine cups water or stock cup sunchoke puree, from above Tsp truffles, chopped fine Tsp chives, finely sliced cup parmesan, grated Tsp Mascarpone cheese

DIRECTIONS Repeatedly wash the sunchokes under cold water until water runs clear. Sweat onion in butter until translucent and add sunchokes to onion base with water. Continue to cook until very tender, about 60 minutes. Puree with cream, season with salt, strain through a chinois, and chill. Reserve for risotto. In a rondeau, sweat diced onion and garlic in butter until translucent. Add in the Arborio rice and parch or toast the rice until you hear it crackle, but not color. Add the wine and reduce the wine until dry. Add the water or stock in small batches, keeping the heat on high, mixing the rice consistently not to let it scorch. Add the remaining liquid and continue to cook. At this point the rice should be 80 percent cooked — if not, add more water or stock, and repeat the process of cooking the rice until it is tender.

I have truly been blessed with the sweetest clients who have also become great friends.” While many would find it stressful, Jowers feels that all aspects of the process are thrilling. That’s especially true of her recent speciality — new construction. She often teams up with builders to choose paint colors, lighting fixtures, flooring, countertops, and cabinet design. “I love to do furniture installs, as well. I make sure all of these things flow and function with the whole house. The end results are always so gratifying. I love working from the outside to the inside,” she says. “My main goal is to make sure I meet the clients’ needs by taking into consideration the budget, preferences, internal and external factors, and of course, making them happy.” One of Jowers’ recent designs certainly did just that. Beach, on 14th Street on St. Simons Island. The home includes a small guest house, as well as the primary five bedroom, five bath property. Jowers was tapped to tackle the design end of the project, while Island Floors and Remodeling took the reins of the primary renovation. “It had not been remodeled or updated since it was originally built,” she notes. Even so, the house had plenty of charming elements. Dubbed “Fabulous on Fourteenth,” the original owners were hopeful that the new buyer would consider keeping some of its unique architectural features. “It belonged to the Adams family. Their sons still live on St. Simons, and when selling the property, they wanted to make sure the buyer was willing to keep some of the original characteristics of the home,” Jowers says.

As fate would have it, the buyer loved the vintage charm. However, some of the original pieces were quickly relegated to the “gotta go” list. The thick green carpet, for instance, was still in place when Jowers signed on. But rather than be deterred, she welcomed the challenge. “There was some terrible shag carpet that we had to say goodbye to,” Jowers says with a laugh, pointing to the new hardwoods. “There were beautiful heart pine floors that we, unfortunately, couldn’t save. But there’s a lot of the original beadboard and also some metal beams in the dining room. Other than that, I was basically starting from scratch, but I was thrilled to be the designer.” Jowers started by selecting the color palette, keeping to bold, vibrant shades.

“My favorite thing is mixing textures and patterns, which I was able to do more of with this theme,” she says. Today, the home primarily serves as a rental property via Georgia Beach Rentals. Stepping inside, vacationers find an upbeat retreat. A screened-in porch leads into a brightly appointed area complete with a table for playing games and a funky accent lamp flanked by two retro-style chairs. Off this room, there’s an office with a palm patterned rug, that simply screams Coastal chic. Moving into the living room, visitors are immersed in pops of blues, pinks, and greens. Framed artwork on the walls portrays pastel-style photos of Palm Springs. Jowers pulled in a mix of patterns, fibers, and colors that, to the untrained eye, seem to have no connection. But rather than a discombobulated feel, there is an overarching sense of eclectic harmony. 54

GOLDEN I S LES

“I pull color swatches that are unique and fit the vision. Next, I select patterns and textures that bring the colors to life. It’s important to make sure these flow together while still maintaining contrast,” she says, standing in the home’s den. It’s a concept that continues throughout the home. Downstairs, bedrooms located off of the living area boast the same multicolored hues in tropical artwork that dots the walls. Walking to the kitchen, guests pass through the homes’ original doors, painted a soft shade of blue and affixed in the popular “barn door” style. In the galley kitchen, Jowers points to another of the home’s original doors, which was repurposed as a range hood. “Dave and his crew at Island Floors and Remodeling made a beautiful hood vent out of an old antique door. Keeping the old charm was just what the home needed,” she says.

“All of the doors are original, including the front door, which is very unique. The homeowner wanted as much of the original home saved as possible, so that’s what we did.” That vintage vibe continues with details Jowers selected from websites and antique shops. One item is a 1957 Thunderbird grill that they turned into wall decor. “The homeowner wanted to incorporate that,” Jowers says. The dining table too, Jowers notes, was custom made to fit that 50s feel. She matched it with teal chairs from Taylor House Interiors. The dining room links to a back patio and pool spaces, which were recently added to the home but feel as though they’ve been a part of it all along. “I love how design trends of the past come back around. The retro vibe has definitely made its way back, becoming more popular by the day,” she says. A stairway in the corner of the room leads to an open floor on the second story. That space now serves as a second den, ideal for visiting youngsters. There’s also an adjoining a bedroom and bathroom.

Reflecting on the process, Jowers notes that there are a few techniques of design she employed that are most helpful when one’s approaching a redesign. “Paint colors are vital; the wrong color can throw off the entire room. Lighting is the jewelry of the home, so take your time choosing. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone,” she says.

A PAVILION in the Trees

O

One sweltering summer day in 2021, I had just wrapped up my Q and A time with the thespians of the Young Actors Workshop. I clocked out and decided to treat myself to a glass of fine red at Golden Isles Olive Oil in Redfern Village. Settling into a seat nearest the faithful fan, I engaged in the time-honored tradition of people watching.

It wasn’t long before I noticed a hip couple approach, moving in to the open table to my right. Soon after, a group approaches, a familiar face within it. It was Susan Ryles, artist extraordinaire and former director of Glynn Visual Arts. It had been a good while since I had seen her as she and her husband, Tim, moved from the area to spend time in L.A. (lower Alabama). Ever outgoing and always friendly, Susan introduced me to her group of companions.

“This is Lindsey Adkison. She works for The Brunswick News and Golden Isles Magazine,” she notes with a nod. After a quick chat, Susan and company meandered on to their table and I resumed my watch. In my periphery, I noticed the fella from the couple’s table get up to walk my way.

“Could you possibly come sit with us for just a minute,” he says with a grin.

Surprised but intrigued, I agree. “I’m Kendrick (Watts) and this is Sarah (Dawkins),” he says, as I place my glass on their table. She smiles and nods. “We couldn’t help but hearing that you work for The Brunswick News,” he went on, pointing toward Susan’s group. I instinctively bristle. With 15 years at the paper, I know that the outside world isn’t always a fan of what we do. And even as the Lifestyle editor, I get a fair share of public frustration tossed my way. Kendrick doesn’t seem to notice and casually continues. “Well, we just moved here not too long ago. And the only thing the

previous owners left us was an old article from The Brunswick News. It was from 1980,” he says, raising his eyebrows. “Our house was on the tour of homes that year. It was just the craziest thing.” I soften as relief washes over me. “Oh wow, that’s incredible. That was 40 years ago,” I reply.

From there, Kendrick and Sarah explain how they had both been visitors to St. Simons Island for years. When the pandemic hit, they found their way back, eventually decid-

ing to move from their Tennessee mountain home to the sandy shores of the Golden Isles. After finding the yellowed piece of newspaper, the two took a deep dive into their home’s history. It turns out their property, tucked into a cozy neighborhood off Frederica Road, has quite the architectural past. “That newspaper article was all we needed to go down a research rabbit hole,” Kendrick says with a laugh. “Within days of finding it, I had spoken to the original architect and the original owner’s daughter.”

There were two architects, Don Powell and Robert Klinesmicht. The latter was the one Kendrick connected with when they arrived. Now in his 90s, Klinesmicht remembered the house distinctly, even recalling the address and the zip code from the 1978 project. “It’s such a crazy story,” Sarah says with a laugh. “But it was the first house he did with his own firm, so it was special to him.” It’s easy to see why. The home, dubbed “Pavilion in the Trees” when it was featured in Interior Design Magazine in 1979, is truly unique. The flat roof and open floor plan harken back to the era of its construction. But the walled outdoor terraces blanketed with crawling vines serve up major Secret Garden vibes. “This really different than anything we’ve had before. But it is so unique and so sweet. From talking to the original owner’s daughter, we learned that her father loved to entertain here and we do too,” Sarah says. “This house is 62

perfect for that. In fact, we had Thanksgiving out in the courtyard and it was amazing.” Of course, the couple brought their own sense of style to the home. “We call it ‘French country meets mid-century modern,’” Kendrick says with a laugh. “Coastal chic,” Sarah adds. “Because the lines are so modern we wanted to carry that, but also bring some softness to it, as well.” As fate would have it, the couple also gravitated toward many of the fabrics and textures that were originally featured in the home. “Sisal, teak, and rattan,” Kendrick lists. “Without knowing it, we slowly started bringing back a lot of the elements that were originally here. But we’ve also brought things that are special to us. I’m from outside of New Orleans and the lighting was custom made in New Orleans. Sarah brought some pieces that were very special to her from Tennessee. So there are pieces from all the places that we love.” St. Simons is certainly at the top of that list now. The couple even added one of the beloved tree spirits to their landscape as a nostalgic nod to their new home. “When we first came here, one of our favorite things was the big tree out in the front yard. Well, two huge limbs fell, no storm or anything, and totaled the car. They also hit the house before we even made a mortgage payment,” Sarah recalls grimacing. “But we wanted to turn that whole experience into something positive and something we could enjoy. So we reached out to (artist) Keith Jennings and got on the waiting list to have one done there.” Their tree spirit was just one of the many pieces that have made St. Simons truly feel like home. “There is such a sense of community here. We just love it,” Sarah says.

Hofwyl-Broadfield’s Camellias have Storied History

Linda Hlozansky spotted her cheat note after she’d located the correct tree.

“This one,” she says, reaching out to carefully touch the string tied around the branch of a camellia tree located among a small grove of similar trees dotted with pink flowers. “This is the Ms. Ophelia,” she says. This particular camellia tree on the Hofwyl Broadfield Plantation Historic Site was among the oldest on the property. The camellia is likely at least 100 years old and has long outlived the person who planted it. The camellias found at Hofwyl state park, which is located off Hwy. 17 at the edge of Glynn County, are one of many facets of the property’s long history. Camellias have been a part of the Southern landscape since the establishment of the original 13 colonies. Hofwyl is part of the Georgia Camellia Trail, a stretch of more than 30 public camellia gardens across the state that includes the garden at the Governor’s Mansion in Atlanta.

She expects Hofwyl’s history of camellias goes back to the late 1800s. Camellias are a mainstay of Southern gardens and were brought to the United States in the 1700s from Asia. Their lifespan is typically 100 to 200 years. The camellias at Hofwyl are possibly nearing their full height, as they were planted about 100 years ago.

Some of the camellias on Hofwyl, though, are unlike any others found around the world.

One variety of camellias is called Camellia Sinensis and is known as the tea camellia, as its leaved steeped in water will provide a caffeine-like boost in energy.

The tree to which Hlozanksy tied her cheat note was likely hybridized by Miriam Dent, one of the last members of her family to reside on the plantation before her sister donated the land to the state.

Ornamental camellias were popularized in Japan, and today more than 300 varieties of the High Camellia are in cultivation.

“A lot of these varieties are not necessarily common, but this one is only found here,” says Bill Giles, historic site manager at Hofwyl. “It was created by what Miriam did, and she named it after her sister Ophelia. But it was specially created by Miriam.” Hlozansky recently delved into this history of the camellias on Hofwyl while doing research for a cookbook published by the Friends of Hofwyl. She serves as vice president of the group.

These plants were expensive and were cultivated in America exclusively in conservatories for more than a hundred years before it was discovered that they were hardy enough to plant outside in Southern coastal regions. Camellias need moist, well-drained acidic soil and protection from cold winter wind. The giant live oaks on Hofwyl provided the afternoon shade the flowers welcome as protection from hot temperatures and cold winds.

Notable people in England and in the American colonies were plant collectors, and many would be excited by the ownership of something exclusive, Hlozansky says. “So it was kind of a rich man’s hobby to gain these beautiful plants,” she says. “They started collecting, and it became really popular at the end of the 19th century.” Camellias could be found under glass at George Washington’s home conservatory. And later, when nature enthusiasts realized camellias could be grown outdoors in areas spanning from Charleston down to coastal Georgia and Florida, many began growing camellias down South. “All of a sudden, they became really quite popular,” Hlozansky says. “And that’s when these ladies started growing them. They’re generally awfully slow to grow … They often outlive their owners.”

“And it’s so pretty.” The final version of the flower would have been what Miriam was aiming to create, Hlozansky says. “She may have done lots of them just to get this one, and it has to come true,” she says. “It has to repeat for a certain number of years or number of cuttings. There’s a lot to it.” The Dents would likely have been self-educated in plant hybridization, Giles says. “They did their own reading,” he says. “There are lots and lots of gardening books in the house.”

A staff member with the Georgia Camellia Society visited Hofwyl and pointed out on a map the two camellia trees that Miriam Dent hybridized. “He drew it out and identified these two on the map, or else I wouldn’t know,” Hlozansky says.

The house at Hofwyl that the Dents lived in is about 170 years old and is built next to a live oak tree that some have dated to be up to 800 years old. Hofwyl stretches across more than 1,200 acres. The Dent siblings were the last of five generations who resided on the property. “There was a brother name Gratz and his sisters Miriam and Ophelia,” Giles says. “Gratz died in 1932. Miriam died in 1953, and Ophelia died in 1973.” Ophelia had no heirs and left the property to the state of Georgia. The property’s camellias bloom in what is typically Hofwyl’s slow season. The plantation sees about 15,000 visitors over the course of each year, but summer is peak tourist season for the Golden Isles.

Hlozansky recommends anyone who wishes to see the camellias in their full-bloom glory to mark their calendars for a trip in January or February. Giles also encouraged history buffs and nature lovers alike to make a trip to Hofwyl. “There’s just such a tremendous amount of history here, and it intertwines with the history all over the coast here,” he says.

Coastal Sophistication: at home with

Hodnett Cooper The Real Estate Star Shares her Fresh Interiors

Crisp cool blues mingle with subtle chocolates and soft creams throughout Pat Hodnett Cooper’s St. Simons Island office. Neatly stacked files denote the serious work that takes place in the real estate mogul’s space day in and day out, but the atmosphere also offers an escape from the everyday bustle. “You spend most of your life at work, so you want it to be somewhere you like to be,” Cooper says, slipping into her desk chair. Seated next to her, Gail Butler nods in agreement. The owner of Taylor House Interiors is a close friend of Cooper who wanted to help her bring a bit of Coastal calm to her workspace.

And it turns out, that was the same approach she took when re-designing Cooper’s East Beach home. The project began two years ago, when her daughter was getting married. “Pat wanted to have the reception downstairs, so that’s what started it,” Butler says. “We re-did that and it turned out just beautiful.” Cooper smiles as she remembers.

“It was a transformation. I still had a teenager then … so it had just been a game room with pool tables and that kind of thing,” she says. “But we really loved it.” That first brush with a fresh look set the tone for what was to come. Cooper built the beachfront home 20 years ago with the help of local architect, Robert Ussery. It proved the perfect place to raise her family and build long-lasting friendships with her neighbors. But after two decades and the downstairs refurbishment, she was toying with the notion of selling her home.

“I really love that house. It’s the first house I ever built. But it was 20 years old and to the point where it needed to be updated. Or I was going to sell it and move,” Cooper says. “I had some great offers, but then I thought, ‘where am I going to go that I can still be close to my mom and five minutes from work?’ Plus, I love this neighborhood … it’s so sweet. So I decided that I would stay and just re-do it.”

Good Good news. news. Rates Rates just just got got lower. lower.

As with the downstairs, she entrusted Butler to breathe new life into her entire home. “We really have the same taste, which makes it easy for me,” Butler says with a giggle. The first step, though, was defining that vision. As with all of her clients, Butler had Cooper stop in at her expansive storefront space at 3079 Frederica Road. There, she has multiple vignettes of various rooms set and staged, allowing customers to feel, touch, and experience each piece of furniture and fabric. “It really starts there,” Cooper says. “It’s so great that she has this beautiful retail spot. That is incredibly helpful because you’re able to go in and see everything in the showroom. You’re able to touch things. So, I would come in and show her what I

liked and sometimes Gail would say, ‘well if you like this, this would look awesome.’ Or ‘I loved what you picked, but those colors won’t work for the direction we’re going … let’s try this.’” Once Butler has an idea of what her clients’ preferences are, she gets down to business. The first thing she does is mentally create a cohesive plan for the space — be that a single room, a few rooms, or an entire home.

“I think about the overall look, but I go room-byroom. I concentrate on the one we’re working on,” she says. It was also about reflecting who Cooper is and how she uses her home. Butler says that many of her clients have second homes in the area and want them to be very Coastal with a prominent beach theme. For Cooper, as a lifelong, full-time resident, Butler approached the decor differently. “Each customer is different. Pat lives here full-time, so I didn’t want it to be a ‘beach house.’ What I did

was, I brought a Coastal flair with a contemporary flair and I mixed the two together,” Butler says. “It’s a great, upscale look. What she has is very sophisticated.” That sense of style extended to the home’s color scheme, as well. Cooper gravitates toward neutral shades like milky creams and khakis with pops of color tastefully woven into the spaces. “I like a pop of the navy … like in the kitchen. That’s my favorite room,” Cooper says. “And I really love to entertain … that’s important to me. It’s so nice that I really love my kitchen now.” “We had so much fun doing that room,” Butler adds. Most of the home was completely renovated — including the color of the ceiling; even so, there were a number of elements that they decided to keep. Some of those were pieces that Cooper treasured like antiques and some long-time favorites, like her dining room table. “I did get some updated chairs because the ones I had looked very old fashioned,” Cooper says. The idea of incorporating the old with the new always appeals to Butler. She feels it helps to give rooms a sense of character. Regardless of whether something is fresh off the showroom floor or a long-held family heirloom, Butler believes in creating a cohesive flow between rooms. “Every room in Pat’s house is different but it’s all cohesive. That’s the style I do … I don’t want a technicolor place,” Butler says, laughing. “You want it all to work together.” And that sense of harmony makes for a happy home and a happy owner. It’s something that Cooper whole-heartedly confirms. “I really love being home … I’ve always loved my house, but everything is just so fresh and new. It’s really just fabulous,” she says with a grin.

Welcome home to Custom Home Design

The sweet scent of jasmine danced in the late spring morning breeze as Mark Jules sipped his coffee. Gazing out over his back lawn, which faces the 18th hole of Retreat Golf Course on St. Simons Island, he can’t help but be filled with gratitude. “We really love it here,” he says with a smile. “It has the feel of a resort town, but it’s also got that small, hometown feeling.” Jules’ family, which includes his wife and two daughters, have created an oasis all their own in the picturesque Island Club on St. Simons. As one would expect, the landscaping is resplendent with flourishing palm trees and pops of vivid flowers. The color and tropical feel was most welcome after leaving their previous home in the frigid north. “We moved down from the eastern shore of Maryland eight years ago. I came here as a kid and I wanted to bring my kids here. They both played golf, so they’ve always loved coming here,” Jules says.

When they decided to make the move, the family settled on a stunning home, situated on a Sea Island-owned golf course. The property is so alluring in fact, it was featured on Cassina Garden Club’s Tabby and Tillandsia Garden Walk in 2021. And it’s easy to see why, since their poolside design truly blows one away. “When we were looking, the view was really important to us. We wanted a good view of the golf course and the pond, which we can see from anywhere in the yard,” Jules says. But more or less, creating the lush landscaping fell to the family. The yard was a blank slate when they first moved in, but Jules says that allowed them to shape it to their liking.

“In a way, we were lucky. The whole backyard was just dirt. There really wasn’t anything here except for a couple of magnolia trees, which we wanted to save,” he says. “But the biggest thing was that we wanted it to be kid-friendly, so we put the pool in. Then, we wanted to make sure all the landscaping was a mix of floral hedging with a zen-like quality. We also wanted to use natural shrubs and flowers.” Jules contacted Ace Garden Center on St. Simons for guidance. There, owner Dawn Hart and her team were able to point out ideal plants for the soil and climate. “Podocarpus are the ones we use for hedging and blue haze is the other. So basically, we use the Podocarpus, hardscaping, and palm trees to create

structure and then filled in with plants that have a more natural form,” Jules says. To bring in some dazzling color, the family selected knockout roses, bougainvillea, plumbago, and added trellises crawling with Confederate jasmine. In addition to the plants, the fountain and stone work added a luxurious feel to the patio. “Camden Decorative Concrete did the pool. We also worked closely with Scott Steilen and his team at Sea Island so we could create something that fit with the golf course,” Jules says. “We used the same travertine as The Cloister. We wanted it to have that similar look and feel. Mason Noble of Outdoor Impressions did the landscaping work. His is a really neat business because it’s family-owned, at one time, a father, son, and grandfather were all working together, which was really cool. They definitely exceeded expectations.” That, he adds, was also true for Grace Lighting and Irrigation, who did the uplighting.

“I actually like the way the garden looks at night the best,” he says. While Jules has had a good deal of help creating and maintaining the space, he also enjoys getting his hands dirty. “I’ve always liked doing it. I love planning out the landscaping and picking the plants. I do the pruning myself, but I do have help that comes out once a week to help with the weeding and some other things,” he says. Over the years, Jules says, there’s been some trial and error, especially in terms of plants. But the family wouldn’t change a thing. “We basically live in the indoor-outdoor space. We try to spend as much time there as possible, cooking, and watching television when the weather is nice,” he says.

HOT BANANA COFFEE WORDS BY LINDSEY ADKISON | PHOTO BY SAM GHIOTO

A warm spring day mysteriously morphed into a misty evening. But even with the unexpected change in weather, an upbeat crowd gathered in Silver Bluff Brewery’s outdoor beer garden. Children chased one another, while some tumbled on the open green space as adults sipped their brews. At the front of the space, Dakota Allyn stepped up to the microphone. “Thanks for hanging out with us in the cold,” she tells the audience. Turns out, Hot Banana Coffee is the perfect antidote to the chill. And that’s what this group offers. The five-piece band fills cup after cup with a mix of 90s classics and recent hits. This particular evening, they served up The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army,” Sublime’s “Santeria,” as well as a Modest Mouse-turned-Miley Cyrus mash up. But the eclectic set list was pretty standard for the group, which is well-known for blending genres. It’s something the members enjoy. They are Dakota Allyn, vocalist; Ashton Rowland, guitarist and keyboardist; Mitch Kilroy, bassist; Adam Paseur, guitarist, bassist, and drummer; and Gabriel Whitley, drummer and percussionist.

90

GOLDEN I S LES

While the members are seasoned musicians who have played and who continue to play in numerous bands, this particular incarnation came together in the fall of 2020. “Dakota and I started off as an acoustic duo,” Rowland says. “I think that the first time we played together was with another band, White Lighter Club. But we really vibed well together, then started playing as a duo.”

out early 2000s pop-punk. It just depends on the crowd and what people want to hear.” The group embraces all styles and that versatility makes sense when one considers that the members hail from a variety of musical backgrounds and abilities. “There are points in our show where we will swap instruments,” Whitley says.

“Slowly, we started bringing in all of our friends,” Allyn adds with a grin.

“And everyone’s vocal contributions really add a lot to it,” Paseur adds.

Whitley then joined, then Kilroy came on board. Paseur wasn’t far behind.

Hot Banana Coffee can often be found at Silver Bluff Brewery, but it also appears throughout the Isles. From twosome appearances at Reid’s Apothecary in downtown Brunswick or full band shows at Murphy’s on St. Simons Island, the group definitely gets around.

“I’ve been in other bands with Adam. I’ve known him since I was really little,” Allyn says. Of course, like Allyn and Kilroy, the rest of the group has been in bands with other members. But the variety allows the group to truly mix it up. “We try not to stick to the stereotypical ‘cover band’ set list. There’s nothing wrong with that, but we like to be a little bit different,” Allyn says. “We try to play something for everybody, so we will have everything from AC/DC to Rage Against the Machine. Sometimes we will pull out 70s music or country music. Sometimes we will pull
