O’ Christmas Tree Like most things in life, moderation is key when it comes to Christmas Tree shopping. But just like my appetite during the Thanksgiving meal, I can get caught up in the festive season. Reason goes right out the window when I arrive at the lot to pick out the perfect tree in my knee-high boots and plaid sweater. And just like Goldilocks, we don’t want something too big or too small; too crooked or too skinny; too dry or too pungent. The perfect tree has to have enough girth to match its height; a straight cut at the bottom to sit in the stand properly; and an evergreen fragrance to bring the outdoors inside. Last year, I thought I had reached Norman Rockwell-esque perfection when it came to my tree. I strolled through the lot of trees next to Bennie’s Red Barn as I drank my Starbucks Peppermint Mocha and Snapchatted my options to the few friends that didn’t show up in my tree posse to help me chose the right one. After much pacing around the lot, I found her towards the back. She was beautiful, 8-feet tall, and smelled like 100 car fresheners. I named her Big Bertha, and she was coming home with me.

Editor Bethany Leggett at the home of designer Dawn Wickberg, featured on Page 101.

It turns out Big Bertha was a bit too big for my car, my apartment door, and almost my ceiling. She was so fragrant that I had to air out my apartment to keep people from passing out. My friends and I ended up having a Big Bertha Bonfire celebration in March, when she was finally dry enough to burn. After that experience, I get why Charlie Brown Christmas trees are sold each year. When it comes to Christmas trees, I have learned that what worked for Norman Rockwell or Charlie Brown may not work for me. So this year, I have some parameters. I won’t buy one that I can’t carry myself, and I won’t buy one that a third-grader could carry. It may not be perfect, but it will be right for my home and my hearth. Happy Holidays, folks!

little girl’s dreamy fantasy and a hilarious tale of a green grouch stealing Christmas will soon come to life as Isles’ dance companies share the magic of the holidays with audiences of all ages.

This December, the Golden Isles Ballet Company will present four performances of the traditional holiday ballet, “The Nutcracker,” while members of Jill Stanford Dance Company will bring back their production of Dr. Seuss’s holiday favorite, “The Grinch.” Whether it’s from the “Waltz of the Snowflakes” or the chorus singing “Fah Who Foraze,” these productions promise to have visions of sugar plums dancing in your head long after the final curtain falls.

T

he Golden Isles Ballet Company combines the talents of acclaimed professionals with local dance students. “We love bringing classic ballet to the area,” says Bess Chambliss, co-founder of the company, who will reprise her roles as the Snow Queen and the Arabian Princess. The company’s artistic director and former Kirov Ballet dancer, Val Salnikov, will perform the role of Clara’s father, while company member and instructor Stacy Paulk will take on the role of Clara’s mother.

“We are thrilled to have professionals Jorge Barani and Meisy Garcia Lafitte return for their fourth show with us and also to have Fhilipe Teixeira and Ashley Brooke Lunn make their debuts with our company,” she says. The demanding role of Clara will be divided this year between 11-year-old Emma Stutzer and 13-year-old Anna Grace Malone. “Clara is the main role, and she is basically in every scene. Emma and Anna Grace will each dance two shows as Clara and will dance in other pieces in the other two productions,” Chambliss said. Both of the young dancers have found the choreography challenging, but are thoroughly enjoying bringing the beloved classic

to life. “I really enjoy learning the choreography and the beautiful, classical sets,” says Anna Grace, a student at Glynn Middle. “My favorite part is the play fighting scene,” adds Emma, a student at Oglethorpe Point. Rehearsals for The Nutcracker, which includes close to 70 cast members of all ages, began in September, and the entire production is a community effort, Chambliss says. “This year we are working with the Golden Isles Career Academy — they are building our sets,” she says. “We’ve also brought in a beautiful backdrop and new costumes from Russia and also had local artists make another backdrop.” “We had so many wonderful comments last year and hope people will make this the start of a wonderful family tradition,” Chambliss says.

Proceeds from ticket sales help with the company’s developing scholarship program for area children who cannot afford dance classes, Chambliss said. All the performances will take place in the Brunswick High School Auditorium and are scheduled for December 9 at 7 p.m.; December 10, at 3 and 7 p.m.; and December 11 at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at goldenislesballet.com or by calling 912-289-2120. They can also be purchased at the company’s new studio at 1312 Newcastle St., Brunswick; The Ritz Theatre in Brunswick; and Frederica Academy and Uncle Don’s Produce, both on St. Simons Island.

outhern Dance Theatre Company at Jill Stanford Dance Center will bring back the Dr. Seuss’ holiday favorite “The Grinch” for their eighth year this December. While Jill Stanford Reeves says audiences for her company’s show “tend to be mostly young,” the production is popular with all ages. “The show is only an hour and is full of action, so it does keep the attention of the young ones.” After 20 years of putting on “The Nutcracker” each year, Stanford Reeves switched gears to produce “The Grinch” and audiences and her students “love it and haven’t gotten tired of it.”

This year’s cast of 75, which ranges in age from six to high school seniors, features Ally Meacom as the Grinch; Olivia Hulett as Cindy Lou Who; and Lucy Williams as Max the Dog. “Honestly, it has been really, really fun to get into the character,” says Ally, a junior at Frederica Academy who played Cindy Lou Who in last year’s production and is returning for her seventh time for the show. “My favorite part is when the Grinch interacts with Cindy Lou while he’s taking her family’s Christmas tree. I love being in ‘The Grinch,’ because it really gets you into the holiday spirit”

Olivia, a student at McIntosh Academy, agrees. “I’ve been in ‘The Grinch’ every year — last year, I was a Who Dad. I was very excited this year (to get the part of Cindy Lou),” she says. “Since I’m only 14, I thought the part would go to someone older. I am just happy to be able to get out there and put on a performance that kids love.” While the story remains the same, Stanford Reeves says she does make tweaks and changes each year to keep the production fresh. “My husband, Rick, makes all our props and sets, and he adds something new every year,” she says. “I have to say, Mount Crumpet looks quite impressive.” She also makes changes to the choreography, adding the song “Who Likes Christmas” this year. While she is in charge of the production, she depends on volunteer moms to help adjust costumes. “With the exception of two or three costumes I ordered, (local costumer) Luanne Lea has made the costumes for all the main characters — she is amazing,” Stanford Reeves says.

This year’s shows will take place at the Glynn Academy Memorial Auditorium on December at 2 and 6 p.m., and December 11 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door; ages three and younger are free. Advance tickets can be purchased at both Jill Stanford Dance Center locations on St. Simons Island and in Brunswick, as well as at South Coast Bank and Trust on St. Simons.

y all definitions, Glenn Fabry is the quintessential comic book nerd. From a love of drawing that blossomed at an early age to inking comics professionally at 19 years old, the jocose, Eisner Award-winning comics artist — who has had his hand in such issues as “Neverwhere,” “Preacher,” “Outlaw Nation,” and “Hellblazer” — is an avid devourer of comic books. His passion for comic art leaps from page to page. That’s not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination, especially since a good chunk of box-office successes in recent years belong to the Marvel and DC Comic superheroes — and well, antiheroes. In this day and age, what was once considered a

nerdy hobby has become cool — even mainstream — and for comics artists such as Fabry, he’s no longer an anomaly nor are comics in short supply. Rather, he is one of many leading the charge in comic book illustrations. Events such as the upcoming Jekyll Comic Con give him all the more reason to “geek out.” Pegged as “an offer too cool to decline,” Fabry plans to make a 4,000-plus mile trek from the shores of England to the Georgia coast for the annual convention, slated for December 10 and 11. But before he makes his way down to the Golden Isles, Fabry talked about his first job in print; comics that have piqued his interest over the years; his creative and noncreative processes; and his works for next year.

‘When I draw a comic strip, I try and make it like a silent movie so you can see what’s going on without any written information.’- Glen Fabry

Q: What or who got you interested in comics? I was good at drawing when I was little, but because I was ill, I had time to read them and thought, ‘Why not give it a go?’ You could buy comics anywhere when I was young, even at the greyhound races.

Q: Where do your ideas for comics come from? Sometimes people offer me stuff, and if it’s a good premise, I’m happy to accept.

Q: How did you get your start as a comic book artist? I was first in print doing cartoons for a local paper. I was very young — 13. Admittedly, my dad got me the job; he was working for them at the time. Then, I went to art school for five years but left because there was no work apart from caricatures at an amusement park. Later, I met Paul Duffy, who worked for ‘The Stranglers’ — a popular punk rock group still going strong — and did a comic strip for them and some Christmas card caricatures for a company at Shepperton Film Studios. Once you’re in print, people contact you.

Q: Without being biased, what would you say are your top 5 comics? They’re not individual issues but ‘Mad Magazine,’ ‘Heavy Metal,’ and ‘Little Nemo.’ ‘Asterix and Tin Tin’ counts as one. If you want your kids to learn to read, start there … also ‘Lone Sloane Delirious’ counts as one, but it’s not so kid-friendly.

with Steve Niles. I also did a very gory ‘Simpsons’ Halloween special comic with Steve Niles; ‘Judge Dredd/Batman Die Laughing’ with Alan Grant and John Wagner; and ‘Preacher’ covers and ‘Preacher: Dead or Alive’ with Garth Ennis.

Q: What’s your latest one? Most of my stuff has been cover illustrations. Those are my comics, so far, but next year … (I’ll be making) ‘Mute,’ … it’s about an Amish mute, 70 years into the future, when Berlin is powered by steam (as any fool should know.) It is written/created by Duncan Jones, a well-known film director (‘Moon,’ ‘Source Code,’ ‘Warcraft’). It’ll be a ‘Dark Horse’ comic novel, hopefully before the movie comes out.

Q: What do you have planned for the Jekyll Comic Con? I’ll be doing drawings, signing and selling stuff, and trying — hopefully succeeding — at being nice … please tell me there’ll be a 3-D printer booth.

Q: If there is one thing you want fans and comic book newcomers to know about you and your work, what would that be? Most of my stuff is pretty good. The best bits, though, will either make you laugh or feel ill. Both at the same time, hopefully.

Q: How many comic books have you created or helped create since you began your professional career at age 19? ‘Jackinblack’ and ‘Bricktop’ are ones I’ve created along with ‘Farthing and Hicks’ with the late Alan Mitchell … then, with other people, there’s ‘Slaine’ for ‘2000 AD’ with Pat Mills; ‘Thor Vikings and Kev’ with Garth Ennis; ‘Neverwhere’ with Neil Gaiman and Mike Carey; and ‘Lot 13’

JUST THE FACTS

Twelve Sounds of Christmas WORDS BY DANA MOODY

Frosty evenings by the fire, steaming mugs of hot cocoa, and white blankets of snow characterize Christmas in many areas of the country, but not here in the Golden Isles. We experience more humidity than snow in December, but we can still get into the Christmas spirit. Count down to the Christmas season with these 12 facts of Christmas caroling.

1.

“Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” was recorded in 1949, a decade after the children’s book was first published.

4.

3.

George Friedrich Handel composed “Messiah” in 24 days after Charles Jennens wrote the libretto.

2.

“Jingle Bells” was composed by James Pierpont around 1850 and copyrighted in Savannah, Georgia, in 1857.

“White Christmas” was first performed by Bing Crosby on Christmas Day in 1941 and has been a Christmas favorite now for 75 years.

5.

“Jingle Bells” was the first song performed in space on Gemini 6 in 1965.

6.

“O Come, O Come Emmanuel” was translated from Latin to English in 1851 and is now translated into 125 languages.

“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” is one of more than 6,500 hymns written by John Wesley, founder of Methodism.

8.

“O Holy Night” was the first song to be transmitted over the radio in 1906.

hen faced with a 10-hour flight home from the United Kingdom, Lori Cook did the only thing she could think of to pass the time. She got a pen and paper and started sketching how to design the interior of her new storefront, Madelyn’s on Frederica. The interior designer, who has more than three decades of experience, was vaulting into a new arena with the brick-and-mortar store that sits at the front of Redfern Village on St. Simons Island. A store had been on Cook’s mind for years, but the timing wasn’t right. Now with her two kids — 13-year-old Madelyn and 11-year-old Michael — a bit older, she has the time to devote to a physical store.

40

GIM_1031 40-55.indd 40

“It takes a lot of personal time to do it. It’s not an easy task, but the kids are older and more independent now,” says Cook, before explaining the name of the store as a nod to her daughter. Interior design has been a passion for Cook since she was a little girl combing through her mother’s stack of home magazines. She carried that passion with her to the University of Georgia, where she enrolled in an interior design program. “I’ve wanted to do design since I was a child,” Cook says of her career. In addition to running her store, she continues to design for clients. In fact, she keeps an ever-revolving inventory of items in the store.

Patterns and textures always come into play when she is designing a room or picking out items for her store. Whether it’s rugs, throws, frames, or furniture, Cook likes to choose a focal point or statement piece and design around that item. Colors can pull together a room, whether you use one dominant style or a mix-and-match approach. And remember the old adage,“less is more,” she says. “You want that focal point in a room. You don’t want to take away from it, but enhance it. And I’m a big fan of mixing textures to create something unique,” she says.

For instance, she came across large wooden pizza paddles and, on a whim, decided to arrange them in a large urn. “I like the old mixed with some glitz or glamour like mirrored fronts on antique furniture. I wanted to offer something that is completely different than what people have seen here. Hopefully, it makes the designer think outside of the box with a few edgier items,” Cook says. She makes several items sold in the store. “It’s like therapy. I like arranging pieces, then coming back a day or two later and rearranging them,” Cook explains. {DIGRESSIONS OF A DILETTANTE}

The terrors of a

DIY Thanksgiving

WORDS BY BUD HEARN

Disaster struck our house on Thanksgiving Day, 1956. It happened the day after Thanksgiving. Daddy made a call. Two men in long white coats showed up and escorted Mama off for evaluation. My mother, bless her heart, was an excellent cook, wife, homemaker, and mother. But she had one fatal flaw: She trusted my brother and me. Let me explain. The year is 1956. I am 14; my brother is 11. We might have contributed to her condition. Thanksgiving is a big event in our small town. Everybody’s related. At family reunions, the entire town shows up. Everybody brings something, mostly appetites. This is my mother’s year to host. She’s uptight. By Tuesday, things are going well, that is until the telephone rings. Bad news. An illness to tend to. She has to leave. She calls us in, including Daddy. “I’m leaving but will be back for Thanksgiving. You three are in charge. Make me proud. OK?” We look at her with vacuous eyes and empty brains. Disaster is written on our faces. Daddy takes charge.“Boys, I’ll handle the cooking. Y’all are in charge of the table decorations. Now, this is a big job; make something festive. It’s a do-it-yourself project. Use your imagination. You have two days.” “Uh, Daddy, give us an idea,” I say. “Pretend you’re a pilgrim, living off the land. Now get busy,” he says. “But right now, Son, get on your bike and go see Mr. Ralph at Piggly Wiggly. Get four cans of cranberry sauce. Hurry.” Errands that require wheels are special. Sweet freedom. I zip off. Mr. Ralph owns the Piggly Wiggly. He’s a sly, old geezer and knows how to make a buck. He hoards stashes of cranberry sauce and doles it out to latecomers at jacked-up prices. Last year, right after Thanksgiving, he bought a new red Chevy convertible and drove the Homecoming Queen in the parade. I learned a lot about supply and demand from Mr. Ralph. And the possibilities of convertibles. My brother, Robert, and I make plans and pool our money for our centerpiece. It adds up to zero. Even so, the Five and Dime has little to sell. Besides, I still owe Miss Carpenter for last week’s candy. It takes finances to have big appetites. We’re stuck with our own resources, which for boys is expansive. We stash the day’s collections for the surprise under my bed.

In the trash behind the high school, we discover a discarded wicker cornucopia basket. It resembles a failed castoff from the Home Economics class. The city dump yields more essentials. Also, discarded surprises emerge from the alley behind the downtown stores. Out of respect for the dead, we leave the recent road kill lying in state on Main Street. We scour the cotton gin and the peanut silo for indigenous ingredients. Several decades later, Martha Stewart’s crowd made a fortune with a similar do-it-yourself creation, clearly a copy of ours. On Wednesday, we unload our bag of goodies. We work late into the night, assembling the arrangement with masterful precision. Thanksgiving morning arrives, and our home is alive with activity. Food is everywhere. Everybody’s excited. Daddy’s directing the kitchen crowd, and my brother and I set up the centerpiece. We cover it with a tablecloth and plan for a grand unveiling. My mother returns just in time for our grandfather’s 10-minute homily on the value of hard work and recital of the blessings of farm life. We unveil our masterpiece to great applause. Scattered around and spilling from the cornucopia are peanuts, pecans, cotton balls, turkey feathers, acorns, cranberries, bird eggs, a rabbit foot, fruits and nuts, and an unhatched wasp’s nest my idiot brother threw in. Then the feast begins in full measure. As the second helping of ambrosia comes around, the cornucopia comes to life, slowly at first. A gnawing sound is heard, like scraping paper. Then a buzzing. Conversation ceases, forks drop audibly on pound cake plates. Suddenly, the wasp nest explodes. Insects swarm. Everyone looks at Mama. She looks at Daddy. He looks at us. We look at each other. The table empties as people flee the swarming menace. It’s a Thanksgiving never to forget. Most things end well. On Saturday, the men in white coats return Mama home. She’s calm, and has no recollection of Thanksgiving, bless her heart. Thanksgiving is all about memories; some are better than others, do it yourself projects included.

{MONEY TALKS}

Options abound for those seeking

Home Loans PROVIDED BY GRETCHEN JOHNSON | SILVERTON MORTGAGE

O

wning a home can be more than just a dream. Even if you have little to no down payment and equity, you may still be eligible for a home mortgage. The market continues to improve, and there are several loan programs available today that might be right for your next home purchase or refinance.

• The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers loans for eligible service members, veterans, and even surviving spouses. This is a great way to get a loan with no mortgage insurance and no down payment. The VA will also waive your funding fee in certain circumstances if you are a disabled veteran. The savings can total up to 3.3 percent of the loan amount. If you already have a VA loan, you might be able to qualify for another VA loan under certain circumstances. VA loans also allows for refinances, including rate/term, cash-out, and the VA IRRRL — or the Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan that is provided for current VA loans in good standing. No appraisal and minimal documentation are some of the benefits of this loan. • Another loan that offers no down payment is the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) loan. This loan has specific zoning and income-limit requirements. This is a great loan product because the advantages include no down payment, low fixed interest rates, and inexpensive mortgage insurance. Your local lender and real estate professionals can help you

44

GIM_1031 40-55.indd 44

determine if you qualify for the USDA loan and which properties are available in the approved zones. • The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgage is another way to purchase a home with a low down payment. Usually the minimum down payment for an FHA loan is 3.5 percent of the home price. There are some homes out there that qualify for an FHA loan with a $100 down payment. FHA also offers refinances at high loan-to-value ratios. If you have an existing FHA loan, you might be eligible for an FHA Streamline refinance with no appraisal. • Conventional loans offer loan products that will allow up to 97 percent of the sales price to be financed. If you do a single 97 percent loan-to-value mortgage, you will have to choose from one of several mortgage insurance options. Mortgage insurance is offered most often as a monthly addition to the payment; but there are other options. An upfront premium is where you pay for the mortgage insurance all at once during

LOAN CHECKLIST We recommend that you contact a local lender before jumping into the housing market. Before you head to your meeting, make sure you are • educated on the potential payments and costs associated with your mortgage. • qualified so you look better to the sellers of the property you wish to buy. • examining mortgage options so you can make the best choice for you. • getting a head start on gathering required documentation.

the closing. A split premium allows you to split the cost between monthly payments and paying upfront at the closing. Lender paid mortgage insurance is also an option with some companies. Some mortgage lenders and banks are also offering second mortgages up to 95 percent loan-to-value again. For example, you can do an 80 percent first mortgage with a 15 percent second mortgage and only need 5 percent cash down to avoid mortgage insurance all together. This can be a great option for the person that wants to buy now and use the proceeds from the sale of their current home to pay off the second mortgage and leave themselves with one lower mortgage payment and no mortgage insurance.

hef Tom Delaney has been dominating the local culinary game for more than 25 years, but how much do you know about him? Trust us, even if you’re a loyal guest at Delaney’s Bistro, go to Café Frederica every day, or own his two cookbooks, we bet there are some things you don’t know about Tom Delaney.

{THE DISH}

He decided to become a chef because he likes to eat. He could not live without his French knives — and dull knives are his pet peeve. He is inspired by Roger Vergé, a French chef and restaurateur. Vergé is considered one of the greatest chefs of his time. The Gault Millau described him as “the very incarnation of the great French chef for foreigners.” His favorite food is foie gras. His most memorable meal was a dinner at Bern’s Steak House in Tampa, Florida. It wasn’t that everything was cutting edge, but everything was done exactly right, from impeccable service to presentation, and from taste to timing. He would love to have cooked for Groucho Marx, the American comedian and film and television star. He definitely had a unique perspective on everything; he was a master of quick wit, mainly irreverent, and he didn’t care. His wild imagination allows him to come up with more than 15 specials every day. When he looks at the daily available foods and freshest ingredients, recipe ideas come up immediately in his mind. He knows what flavors and textures will play well together, He loves to travel but does not bring back recipes. He brings back inspirations, shards of ideas that eventually merge into a recipe. Not everyone’s minds or tastes work the same. He works at the restaurant 100 hours a week, which does not leave lots of time to relax. But when he does, he reads car magazines and watches sports networks. Other hobbies include playing cribbage, attending Jacksonville Jaguars football games, and spending time with family and his granddaughter, Delaney. When it comes to music, he likes it all: blues, rock, jazz, classical ... but his favorite band? Pink Floyd, no doubt.

{DUE SOUTH}

Stories that happen when I come S outh from North Georgia

Finding

IN THE ISLES WORDS BY RONDA RICH

T

he year 2005 had been very good to me — but it was the way that it ended that would come to be a gift that has continued to give.

My first fictional work had become a bestseller and was optioned for a movie; a nonfiction book, published on the same day as the novel, had done well. Speaking engagements and book tours kept me busy, and I had overseen, as general contractor, the building of my new house that sits less than 50 yards from banks of the small river that had been my childhood haven and playground. Among the many memorable events of that year was a home visit from a FBI agent who was involved in the investigation of a case that would come to be tagged by the media as “the Runaway Bride.” Though I didn’t know her, the FBI agent was looking for someone I did know and whom they thought could give them a solid lead on her whereabouts.

50

GIM_1031 40-55.indd 50

“I have no idea where to find him,” I told the agent then smiled sweetly. “But if you do find his contact information, be sure to keep it because I’m sure you’ll need it again one day.” A couple of days later, the bride turned up out west somewhere, not having been kidnapped but rather suffering from cold feet. Then, two weeks before Christmas, I reached out to my high school friend Vandy McArthy to ask if she could find me a vacation cottage in St. Simons Island. She called a couple of days later and said, “I have a place for you near the King and Prince, just off Beach Drive.” Three days after Christmas, I loaded the car with clothes, supplies, books, magazines, and my dachshund, Dixie Dew, and headed south. As night was falling, I pulled into the drive of a simple, tabby cottage and eyed it with more than a bit of uncertainty. Once the

front door was opened, though, I sighed contently. It was lovely, well-furnished, cozy, and filled with every necessity I could want and several luxuries as well.

Rob Purvis

Joe Nash

It was there in that simple tabby cottage that I came to know the beautiful meaning of “island time” and how the Golden Isles of Georgia could hold a sway over me that nudged me gently into mental tranquility. I relaxed. I took deep breaths. I slept gloriously well. I read a memoir by one of the Kennedy grandchildren. And Dixie Dew and I took long walks in the morning and evening along the beach, strolling along for an hour or two at a time. It was simultaneously peaceful and invigorating. One morning, perhaps the third day of my one-week stay, I finished my cream-laden morning coffee, leashed Dew, and headed to the beach where a splattering of early risers dotted the white sands. Suddenly, words came spilling into my brain, tumbling forth in lyric and strength. I had no idea where they would lead but knew it was somewhere I wanted to go. I turned and hurried back to the cottage, where I typed furiously the first paragraph of a page that began:

In those days, the poor were really poor, their backbones hollow from lack of food and their brows heavy with the kind of worry that will drive a man to an early grave, leaving his poor, fragile widow and a passel of half-starved young’uns to cry mournfully over his raggedy remains. Around those hand-dug graves filled with rough, hand-hewn pine boxes, they sang Amazing Grace as it rained. It always rained. In the days that followed, pages poured forth after those morning walks along the beach and stacked themselves together to become a Christmas novella. More significant than the words or sentences that crept through my literary voice during that first stay in the tabby cottage was a profound discovery: I had found a muse. All writers yearn for a muse, but few truly find it — that person or place that inspires creativity and is a well of never-ending supply — St. Simons and Sea islands are that for me. It is not unusual for me to spend a week there and write eight, nine, or 10 newspaper columns. It’s as though I snatch them out of the sea-scented air, or from the ocean waves that drag them in from the Ronda Rich blue depths and deposit them at my feet. Vandy and the tabby cottage. What a gift. The best way to end a wonderful year and to bring in another one.

— This is the fifth column in a series where Ronda Rich recalls how she met and fell in love with the Golden Isles and its people.

ith many beautiful golf courses in the Golden Isles and the RSM Classic right around the corner, golf is on the mind. As a Titleist Performance Institute certified golf fitness instructor and licensed physical therapist, I want to help golfers improve their body mechanics to create a more efficient golf swing and lower scores. Most golfers commit some common swing faults. In an attempt to fix these problems, they might nestle up to a bucket of driving range balls and swing away until they’re standing next to a patch of brown dirt, having done nothing more than ingrained those bad habits and positions into their golf swing. When something is wrong with your car, do you continue to drive mile after mile with the hope the car will miraculously fix itself? A golf professional will teach you positions to help you hit it straighter, higher, and longer. If your joints and muscles do not allow you to reach those positions, though, your body compensates causing swing faults such as coming over the top; reverse spine angle; loss of posture; and hanging back. This is where a TPI certified physical therapist can help. These joint and muscle deficiencies can be related to problems with strength, mobility, flexibility, or motor control, keeping you from achieving your most efficient swing. Three common deficiencies seen in golfers that keep them from achieving their most efficient swing are: • Upper back extension, or the ability to straighten your thoracic spine, is an area where many struggle. Limitations can stem from prolonged sitting at a desk or huddled over your smartphone, leading to tightness of the chest musculature and immobile thoracic vertebrae. All told, you will end up hunched over your golf ball (“C-posture”) with decreased ability to rotate your thoracic spine in the back swing and follow through, an essential aspect to the proper swing sequence.

• Decreased balance plagues many of us, especially as we age or experience lower body injuries that directly affect our golf swing. Deficiencies in any of the three areas linking to overall balance — vision, inner ear, and proprioception — can lead to a decreased ability to confidently turn onto your lead leg during your downswing. This can result in the “hanging back” or “sliding through” swing characteristics (i.e. loss of distance and accuracy). As with muscle weakness and flexibility, balance can be improved with proper training. • Mobility in the hip joints is a crucial trait in creating maximum efficiency in your swing. Limitations are typically due to arthritis or tightness of the joint capsule or musculature surrounding the hip and pelvis. Maximizing this mobility, most importantly in the rotational aspect, will allow you to properly load your back leg during your backswing and create a stable lead leg during your downswing. Learning the proper way to mobilize the joint and stretch the surrounding musculature can go a long way (driving distance included) in improving your game. These deficiencies highlighted and many others can be improved upon, but you must first know which ones you are dealing with. The Titleist Performance Institute has developed a functional golf-specific movement screen highlighting these deficiencies, helping start you on the road to lower scores and greater enjoyment of the game. The team at Advance Rehabilitation is well-equipped to help you with these and any other mobility or strength concerns you have. Scheduling a quick assessment now could save you strokes and frustration in the future.

“A

dmiral, there be whales here!” Scotty exclaims to Captain Kirk. This a line from my favorite Star Trek movie “Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home.” An alien probe is draining all earth’s power because it cannot find any whales. Captain Kirk and the crew go back to the 1980s with a plan to bring two whales back to their time. What a sad scenario: no whales. I am fascinated by whales. They are the largest air-breathing animals. They live in the vast, mysterious ocean. Whales can be divided into two types, toothed and baleen. Toothed whales eat fish, squid, and octopus. The largest toothed whale is the Sperm whale and grows up to 50 or 60 feet long — that’s the size of a school bus! Baleen whales are larger than toothed whales. The biggest animal on earth, the Blue Whale, is a baleen whale that can grow to 110 feet and weigh up to 174 tons. “Baleen, what the heck is baleen?”you may ask. Look at your fingernails. Your fingernails are made of keratin, which is a key component of baleen. Baleen strips or plates hang from the top of whale’s mouth and take the place of teeth. They filter out small creatures called krill. They

54

GIM_1031 40-55.indd 54

can be as much as nine-and-a-half feet long. Think about that for a moment. Those plates are taller than a basketball player. Another baleen whale, the North Atlantic right whale was named such because they were the perfect for hunting. They swim slowly near the surface of the ocean, and they have a large amount of fat and oil that makes them float when they die. All that fat and oil meant those whales were valuable. In the late 19th century, we used whale oil to light our houses. And it wasn’t just about oil. Those long baleen plates made perfect corset stays, umbrella ribs, and buggy whips. For hundreds of years, we hunted whales — right up to the brink of extinction. Sadly, scientists estimate there are only about 350 North Atlantic right whales left, making these animals one of the most endangered of the large whale species. Right whales grow to around 50 feet long and weigh up to 120,000 pounds. They do not have a dorsal fin and are black with distinct white patches around the head. These white patches can be used to identify individual whales.

holiday. The biggest animal on earth, the Blue Whale, is a baleen whale that can grow to 110 feet and weigh up to 174 tons. We have right whales off the Georgia Coast. They will be arriving here in early December in time to breed. I’ve always felt our coast is special; now I have another reason to love it. Knowing that we have a nursery for these endangered whales right off our beaches is simply amazing. It is our job to protect them. After all, we don’t want to lose these whales on our watch. For that reason, there is a team of scientists watching over them. Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are all part of the team. The group conducts aerial and boat surveys off the coast from the beginning of December through March. Since whales do not move out of the path of ships, they can get scars from the propeller. This team takes notes of these scars on the whales. Another problem they try to help with, although it can be dangerous, is untangling whales caught in fishing lines and nets. The team also identifies the females and their young. This team of scientists knows the joy of seeing a newborn calf being pushed up to take its first breath. They know what it is like to watch as one of these massive creatures, free of fishing nets, jumps out of the water and dives back down below the surface of the ocean. Knowing that that team of scientists is out there keeping track of the births and ensuring that the animals will not get tangled in fishing nets is comforting. They are working to prevent the sad scenario of “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” from becoming real. We can all join Scotty and say, “There be whales here!”

This twisted twig wreath provides the perfect backdrop to fill in with cranberries, pine cones, and just a splash of green leaves for contrast. 60

Southern Snow

Styled by Plumnelly’s Cottage On the door of the Haven Residence

While it’s safe to say we won’t have a White Christmas in the traditional sense, we can embrace our agricultural heritage with a cotton wreath like this one. Add an extra layer of design to your front door by picking a wreath hanger that includes a mason jar and candle that will mimic the holiday tradition of placing a candle in the window at night.

We loved all the plants included in this door ring. From oranges and blueberries to an artichoke anchoring the wreath at the bottom, there are layers and layers of edibles jutting out of the greenery, which shouldn’t be overlooked. Even the background plants provide shades of color, from the cool tones of dusty miller to the bright green ivy. 62

An unofficial symbol of the South, magnolia flowers and leaves just pop in this wonderfully decorative Christmas display. The greenery provides the perfect initial layer as the three flowers are placed around the wreath to balance a magnificent red bow adorning the top. The color is matched with snow-dusted cranberries and pinecones that brings this joyful season to the front door.

Two Turtle Doves

Styled by Golden Isles Magazine On the door at The Dart Manor

“The Twelve Days of Christmas” is a favorite carol of the staff at Golden Isles Magazine (and sometimes we even are known to act out the verses). So, we had to try our hand at designing a wreath that encompassed our love for the song. Two turtle doves sit nestled in our bird’s nest wreath, surrounded by foxtail ferns, acorns, berries, and a holly garland.

Ingredients

• 1 marshmallow • 1 tbsp. chocolate syrup • 1 tbsp. graham cracker crumbs • 1 oz. vodka • 2 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream • 2 oz. 2% milk • Ice

Directions • Place your marshmallow in a small pan over medium heat, and toast until browned (1 to 2 minutes). • Meanwhile, rim a lowball glass with chocolate sauce, and dip immediately in graham cracker crumbs. • Fill your cocktail shaker with ice. Toss in vodka and Bailey’s Irish Cream. Shake vigorously (the longer the better. It should be freezing cold and well-agitated). • Place 2-3 cubes in your glass, pour liquor mixture overtop, and fill the rest of the glass with milk. Top off with your roasted marshmallow. Enjoy!

After The Storm Passes Hurricane Matthew photo series by Bobby Haven

W

hen Hurricane Matthew hit the Golden Isles in October, many packed their cars with their most important belongings and fled, not knowing if their homes would be standing after the storm passed.

Upon return, we faced damaged properties, felled trees, and flooded structures. But the spirit of our community never swayed. Strangers became neighbors, and neighbors became friends. Before Matthew, many defined “home as a physical place. After Matthew, the word encompasses the people that have rebuilt and recovered together.

Home in the Golden Isles, pre-Matthew, was a composite of relationships with loved ones, the physical comfort of a screened porch in the midst of a live oak and pine canopy, near tidal waters, and the wonderful variety of activities available in our historic area! Somewhat taken for granted, this home in the Golden Isles (for me over 40 years) has been delightful!

“ 90

GIM_1031 89-100.indd 90

Home in the Golden Isles, post-Matthew, is a jigsaw puzzle of images that we will put back together, maybe a bit frayed with a few pieces lost! Focusing on the number of offers of places to stay, phone calls, Facebook private messages, texts and stories shared of generous and kind strangers shapes the image of home now as a web of communication, comforting and encouraging. Nature, seemingly cruel, is resilient, and so we all can be! – Harriet Langford, Darien

Certainly having to pack for a possible ‘one-way’ trip out is an incredible exercise in finding out what is truly important to you. You can only fit so much in a truck … The ‘after’ simply verified and multiplied my belief that this is a great community because of great people. I had seven or eight people who stayed through the storm walk up to the restaurant Saturday, asking what I was doing. When I told them I was feeding the first responders, they asked if they could help … and they did. People who have never worked in a restaurant rolled up their sleeves and helped me cook for a few days in a kitchen with no power, exhaust hood, or AC. A gracious, tiny woman in her 50s washed pots and pans for four hours with a smile on her face! She never complained!

The beaches, water, Spanish moss, spartina, weather — yeah, they make this place great. It’s the people that make the Golden Isles so special. – Dave Snyder, Saint Simons

We moved to St. Simons Island several years ago, making the choice to relocate our business after traveling back and forth to the Golden Isles for years. That definition of ‘home’ was always that it was the place we loved for its beauty, its people, its climate, and more. We knew we wanted to call this our permanent home and are blessed to do so. We’re blessed not only by the beauty that is St. Simons Island, but by knowing better this community. Those people who truly have your back, who give unselfishly and who love calling St. Simons Island home as much as we do! There are a lot of coastal communities, but this one has something special — ‘our Mayberry with a beach.’ Watching small businesses step up to lend a hand with such open and grateful hearts is a community we love to be a part of. And to work alongside them is a pleasure and an honor.

I’ve lived in the Golden Isles, St. Simons in particular, my entire life. I’ve watched a sleepy, slow beach town with tiny beach cottages and familiar faces turn into a worldrenowned resort area with not-so-familiar faces. Before Hurricane Matthew, I had begun to feel a little out of touch with the quaint, beautiful place I had grown up. Obviously change is hard, I embrace a lot; but, with this place I’ve known my whole life, it’s hard to be nostalgic when so much has changed. We stayed, despite my protest, but I’m glad we did because, for a few days, I had my island, my childhood back. We rode around the island with no cars in sight, rode bikes on the beach in the middle of the day with no one around, like we were the last two people on earth. We fed a milllion animals, checked on people’s houses and reconnected with people I hadn’t spoken to in years — for example, my Sunday school teacher. The St. Simons Live Update (Facebook group) was a good way to communicate what was actually going on on the island because there was a lot of misinformation. It is wonderful hearing from such a broad platform of people who are ‘natives,’ ‘locals,’ ‘transplants,’ because they all have a different perspective of what St. Simons is or what it should be. But no matter what people’s view of St. Simons Island is, they can all agree that it’s a very special place to live — full of wonderful people, who at the end of the day, care fiercely for their neighbors whether they like them or not! After Hurricane Matthew, I feel connected again to St. Simons and her people on a new level. I am grateful that I was allowed that once-in-a-lifetime experience of having her all to ourselves. – Brookie Winship Baskin, Saint Simons

Before Hurricane Mathew, the property owners in the Golden Isles had homes in Glynn County. We lived, played, worked, and vacationed in this wonderful part of the world. Most were interested in maintaining their ‘property values,’ in anticipation of selling their house someday so they could upgrade, downsize, or give an inheritance to their families. Hurricane Matthew forced people to understand that their home was more than the physical building in which they slept at night. This amazing place is a collection of houses that are home to the Golden Isles community. Small or large, modest or expensive, these houses represent the people that become emotionally attatched to a way of life that needs to be protected! The Golden Isles community is my home!

I never really considered where I was to be my ‘home,’ but rather just another stop on my journey of life. That was true until my husband, Paul, and I moved to the Golden Isles in 2004. We instantly fell in love with the natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere of the entire area; however, it was the people who started to steal our hearts. It wasn’t long before we were welcomed into groups of friends with open arms and had begun to invest ourselves emotionally in the community. We knew pretty quickly that this is where we wanted to stay and began to put down roots. We have begun to raise our family here, opened our business, and the Golden Isles has become very dear to us. Driving away during the evacuation from Hurricane Matthew was beyond hard and heartbreaking. We knew if the forecasts of the storm came true that we would very likely loose our house, many neighbors, and that the area we so dearly love might never be the same again. We drove to safety with family out of state and turned to social media to keep up with all of our neighbors as they either stayed or evacuated. We watched with wonderment as the community banded together on Facebook with support, encouragement, and love for each other. We shouted with joy when the storm had passed, and we learned our neighbors were safe. Now that we are back and the clean up has begun my heart fills with an over whelming pride and love for our community. Yes the Golden Isles is filled with a natural beauty but it’s the people here who make it truly unique and wonderful. This place is special; this is where we want to stay; this is home. – Brooke Roberts, Brunswick

Before Matthew, St. Simons was a place of sunny skies, light spilling through Spanish moss ... all upside, no downside. After Matthew, it’s been a sea change; the relief streaming over the causeway. This is home — not a physical structure, but a sense of place, community, belonging. I’ve often envied the Italians their sense of ‘terra’ — their land. And I think I finally get it.

Before Matthew, I would define home in the Golden Isles like this: a beautiful place, where I am privileged to raise a family and do ministry with and among people I love dearly.

“ “

– David L., Brunswick

Originally, I wasn’t going to leave. I was going to stay home. I guess with being gone for so many years and coming home, I enjoy being home. It’s a different experience, most definitely, when you are in that situation and have to go somewhere else ... Everything is pretty much the same, but I was just glad to be home. ‘There’s no place like home,’ like Dorothy says. No place like it.

Afterward, home in the Golden Isles is something I do not take for granted. This is a beautiful place with an amazing community of people who have stepped up to love and serve one another. I believe Matthew has made home here in the Golden Isles feel more like home more than ever before. Before Matthew, I may have thought about home as a place, but now it feels more like a community of wonderful, compassionate people. I truly give God thanks for our home here in the Golden Isles. – David Yarborough, Saint Simons Not all hearing loss requires a hearing aid. risp white linens. An empty dishwater. Linen scented candles on the counter. These are a few of Dawn Wickberg’s favorite things.

Dawn Wickberg at her home on St. Simons

The interior designer, who lives in the Frederica community on the north end of St. Simons, uses her extensive knowledge from flipping homes and designing spaces in order to maximize profit when homes go on the market. She works with three developers in Frederica to stage five model homes for sale in addition to flipping homes on her own. While putting her own home on the market this winter, Wickberg suggests several ways homeowners can maximize their home’s value.

In Wickberg’s living room, she turns on all lights and has a roaring fire ready for an open house.

“Every person who walks through your home should feel like they could see this as their home. Make an effort with every showing and show that the home is move-in ready,” Wickberg says. “When you want to sell your house for top dollar, you have to take the time to do it properly. Every room should be shown at its best potential.” When it comes to the housing market, the old adage “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” rings somewhat true. While you may love your collection of sports memorabilia or your extensive library of cookbooks, you don’t want your tastes to be off-putting to the people touring through your home. Appealing to a broader base will increase the likelihood of selling your home quickly, she says. No detail is too small to overlook when prepping your house to go on the market. Rumpled linens are one of Wickberg’s biggest pet peeves, and forget about floral-printed sheets. When you stage the bedrooms, you will need crisp, white linens to create a visual tabula rasa. “You want crisp linens and the bed to look like a hotel bed. Rumbled sheets look

102

GIM_1031 101-109.indd 102

disheveled and unkempt, which is a turn off for the buyers. By using white linens, a comforter folded halfway back or at the foot of the bed, and two or three throw pillows, you can mimic that hotel room feel and appeal to the mainstream,” Wickberg says. The same principal applies to bathrooms. Clean, white towels that have been folded properly are a must. Limit counter items to maybe a perfume bottle, and keep makeup items out of sight, she says. Wickberg is no novice to selling homes. She has flipped six houses since 2008. In fact, she started flipping homes right after the market hit bottom — and she still managed to get asking price for two homes she sold after a month on the market that year.

When it comes to the back porch, treat it like any other room inside the house, Wickberg says. Make sure pillows are fluffled, all surfaces are clean, and all lights are turned on. Keep an eye out for any bugs or cobwebs in the corners, too.

When it comes to an open house, no room is off limits to potential buyers. Wickberg knows buyers will open up the closets, comb through the refrigerator, and check the dishwasher. So be prepared before your first showing, and make sure there are no dirty dishes, smelly food, or clothes left on the floor, she recommends.

For Special Days & Every Day In fact, when it comes to the kitchen, even appliances can clutter the visual field. Keep cookbooks, knives, and appliances (perhaps even the coffeemaker) out of the way so countertops are clean and open. A candle in the center with some fresh flowers will make a better impression than a collection of mismatched coffee mugs, Wickberg says. If things sound a bit overwhelming, take a deep breath. Remember that preparation can only help your sale and eventual move, Wickberg says. Her timeline to prepare the home for resale starts 60 days prior to putting it on the market. Clean and organize each room, removing most personal touches and boxing them for your move. She went through her house to pack away personal objects and tidy up the living spaces three months before her house went on the market.

“Go through every room and alleviate clutter. You want very few family photos to be seen, just one or two in each room. You aren’t showing your style, but a general style that appeals to the people walking through your house. You have to dissociate your home as yours so they can imagine the home as theirs,” she says. Wickberg’s formula for presentation has no age limits. Walking into her son’s room, which is already open-house ready, it is clear that the space is for a young male. But there are no posters on the walls or toys overflowing in bins. A few model cars and a football helmet sit on display on the bedside tables. Underneath the blue plaid comforter folded at the end of his bed are pressed white sheets.

For the kitcen (top), Wickberg suggests all countertops be cleared of most appliances, dishwaher emptied, and refrigerator clean. Oftentimes, she will have a floral arrangement and a lit candle as the only decoration in the kitchen, and the dining room (bottom right) should have a simple decoration in the center with all chairs pushed in at the table. The study (bottom left) can have a few personal touches, but the desk should be clean without papers or filing cabinets visible.

Staging your home during the holidays “You can’t go overboard, but it would look strange for a home not to be decorated for the holidays when someone comes to an open house,” Wickberg says. Christmas candles, a lovely holiday wreath, and a tree decorated with generic ornaments will enhance the ambiance of the home. Classical or instrumental Christmas music can play subtly in the background during the open house. And when you are packing your children’s rooms, make a pile of toys they can donate to others in need during this charitable season.

A TH 10 Instead of hanging large family portraits in the living room, Wickberg suggests picking up an inexpensive piece of wall art that you can also use somewhere in your new home after the sale goes through. But you don’t have to remove every touch of your life from your living space. For instance, Wickberg loves coastal items such as starfish, so she leaves a few of those items on shelves or as table decorations. Above the televisions in her living room hang two pictures of her grandfather’s boat that was requisitioned during World War II. The antique photos are personal to her, but they fit with the coastal theme of other accessories. “A select few personal items are fine, but anything that is specific to your personal taste should be packed away, ” she says. One way to eliminate clutter is to host a yard sale before putting your home on the market, she says. When packing up your house, you always come across things you plan to sell or donate. Instead of waiting until after the home sells to host a garage or moving sale, host one before you put it on the market, Wickberg says. In addition to a garage sale, Wickberg says to have the home inspected early and plan on fixing any major problems in advance. “You already know that you need to do to your house. Just go ahead and do it before your first showing,” she says.

“I like to explain it by telling them that their favorite things will be coming with us to the new house. But before we can go to the new house, we are going to sell this one, which means people will be walking through our rooms. That’s why we want to keep our favorite things private, just for us,” she says.

Younger kids may not understand the need to keep things tidy and out of sight; so, Wickberg suggests explaining to them about the move in advance while you are decluttering the house.

Decorating This Holiday Season Doesn’t Have To Be a Pain… WE’VE COLLECTED A FEW TIPS ON PROPER LADDER USAGE TO HELP YOU STAY SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON! • Wear clean slip-resistant shoes. Shoes with leather soles are not ideal for ladder use as they are not considered sufficiently slip-resistant • When the ladder is set-up for use, it should be placed on firm level ground and without any type of slippery condition present at the base or top points • Ladders should not be placed in front of closed doors that can open toward the ladder. The door should be blocked open, locked or guarded • The length of the ladder should be sufficient so that the climber does not have to stand on the top rung or step • Ladders with loose or missing parts should not be used

For the bedrooms, Wickberg recommends designing the space like a hotel room. Crisp, white sheets with a comforter folded in half or thirds at the end of the bed can create a clean look. For king beds, three pillows can be used; for full- or queen-sized beds, use two decorative pillows. And remember to keep the family objects to two or three photos per room.

Checklist for the morning of your Open House All children’s toys are in bins and out of sight.

Make sure all garbage is out of the house.

Take your pet with you when you leave before the Realtor arrives.

Closets are clean and tidy.

Any pet toys, food, and bowls are removed. Candles are lit, and if you have a fireplace, turn it on. Play light jazz to set the mood.

Dishwater is empty. Refrigerator contains no smelly foods. Turn the lights on in every room. Open curtains in living spaces.

Make beds with comforters folded, white linens pressed, and throw pillows fluffed. If you have a pool, make sure there are no leaves in it. Place rolled towels on the end of pool chairs like you would find at a hotel. No cobwebs are visible near your front or back door and porch area.

unfurnished, and each item seen in the staged rooms is available to be purchased at wholesale and added to the total — almost like ordering off a catalog. Only now, the buyer already sees the furniture in the room and how it will fit. Most buyers purchase the models with 90 percent of the furniture used to stage it, Wickberg says. “By showing your house at its best, you will be showing how well it has been taken care of and, as a result, get a higher price,” she says. “If you are selling it as a fixer-upper, you won’t get your asking price.”

With her current home on the market, she is ready to flip her seventh house. That being said, she isn’t ready to leave the Golden Isles completely.

If there are any large items or pieces of furniture that you don’t plan to take to your next home, you can always sell them a la carte to the purchaser. Wickberg uses this modus operandi for staging the model homes in Frederica. The asking price is set for the model home

“I do love design and to create a new space. To design a house from the ground up is truly a passion, and we will retire here in the future. The people and genuine generosity here is unlike anywhere else,” Wickberg says.

HAMP STEVENS WORDS BY LIZ GENTZLE | PHOTOS BY TAMARA GIBSON

HAMP STEVENS DOESN’T THINK OF HIMSELF AS AN ARTIST, RATHER AS A FRUSTRATED INVENTOR. THE ST. SIMONS WOODTURNER TAKES HIS TIME BUILDING AND INVENTING IN HIS CARPENTRY SHOP ON THE NORTH END OF ST. SIMONS ISLAND. A RENAISSANCE MAN WITH MULTIPLE TALENTS, STEVENS FINDS HIMSELF TINKERING ON PROJECTS FROM ABSTRACT GEOMETRIC SCULPTURES TO KAYAKS AND CANOES. “THERE IS NOTHING MORE FUN TO ME THAN TO FIGURE SOMETHING OUT AND THEN TO BUILD IT,” HE SAYS.

SWING AWAY For instance, Stevens noticed an old sleeper swing on the porch of Greyfield Inn during a visit to Cumberland Island. Soon after, he was patiently tinkering and measuring his first custom swing in his workshop. These finely crafted swings, appropriately called the Cumberland Island Swing, are spacious, made of mahogany, and even come with a cupholder for those long nights spent on the front porch. “They have a certain draw and warmth to them that makes you want to sit down and read a book,” he says. Craftsmanship is important to Stevens. Gorgeous alternating strips of western red and yellow cedar give Stevens’ kayaks and canoes a distinctive handcrafted look and are designed for sturdiness as well as visual impact. The kayaks, which weigh just under 50 pounds, are lined inside and out with fiberglass. When someone asks him to custom-build a swing or boat, his attention to detail is

intense and shines through the designs. And for all his water-bound items sold, Stevens personally tests them in the tidal creeks, making adjustments as needed in his garage shop. MASTER BUILDERS Growing up on a large farm in Ellaville, Stevens worked long hours alongside his father, who was a master builder by necessity. Being somewhat isolated on a large tract of land, it was up to them to figure out how to build something needed, repair things mechanical, and move the immovable in ingenious ways. Stevens gained even more skills while attending the University of Georgia, where he graduated in 1973. A week after graduation, he went to work for himself in a steel erection business, South Georgia Steel, that lasted for 20 years. His mind always whirling, he invented and patented a sod planting machine, co-founded A & H Machines, and was a member and seat owner on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

In 2014, Stevens won first prize in best craftsmanship in Seoul, South Korea, for his wooden Rhombicosidodecahedron — which combines 12 Pentagons, 30 Squares and 20 Triangles. That’s a lot of shapes! 110

GEOMETRIC ART It’s that independent spirit and drive to discover that led Stevens into his other woodworking passion: polyhedra. Craftsmanship and mathematics merge in a complex balance of spherical trigonometry that seems mind-boggling. Using the classic 13 Archimedean shapes, Stevens expertly makes spheres of various sizes and materials. Working from his hand-built, computer-controlled router, he precision cuts away to form the shapes. For Stevens, each polyhedra that he creates out of paper, wood, or metal is a four-dimensional puzzle waiting to be solved. His fascination of geometric shapes goes back to his fifth-grade geometry class. “Anytime I was in school and tried to learn something, if I could put my hands on it and feel it, touch it and handle it, I learned it just like that!” he says. It’s the joy of a challenge that grabbed Stevens and set him on a path to becoming one of the few in the world that can create these complex polyhedric sculptures. Less than five people in the world do this work in wood. Worldwide, there is no other person who makes polyhedra in steel. RENAISSANCE MAN When he isn’t building swings, canoes, kayaks, or polyhedra, Stevens competes in annual shows at Glynn Visual Arts, Spring Into Art in Valdosta, International Mathematics Meeting, and Bridges International Conference. “I enter mathematical art competitions all over the world as well as regional art shows and competitions,” Stevens says. Outside of the shop, you may find Stevens hosting a game day feast or attending a charity function benefitting a cause close to his heart. So keep an eye out for the Isles’ Renaissance Man. He may be in a canoe, sitting on a porch, crafting a steel polyhedra, or discovering his next passionate hobby.

OWEN PLANT WORDS BY LINDSEY ADKISON | PHOTOS BY TAMARA GIBSON

WHEN OWEN PLANT ENTERS A ROOM, PEOPLE TAKE NOTICE. IT’S NOT JUST HIS 6-FOOT, 2-INCH FRAME OR HIS MANE OF WILD, CURLY HAIR. IT’S BECAUSE PLANT IS A LOCAL CELEBRITY, PERFORMING STANDING GIGS WITH THE SEA ISLAND CO. AS THE LUXURY RESORT’S ARTIST IN RESIDENCE. But even with the lofty title and performing with the likes of David Crosby and Amos Lee, Plant remains firmly tethered to the the earth. The laid-back guitarist, singer, and songwriter simply enjoys doing what he loves — sharing his music with as many people as possible. It is a passion that was born back in his native Jamaica, where Plant absorbed all of the island’s relaxed reggae vibes. “I was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and we left the country when I was 2, due to the political violence that was there. My dad went to a university up in the States. We went back to Jamaica a little later. And that’s where I learned music … not guitar but I learned to play the piano there and other stuff. I played in a little band there,” he says.

“Now I’ve found this voice — it’s genre-bending and eclectic. This album has a hint of reggae on the last song but that’s it. People have told me this all through the years — ‘You get to chose your sound as much as it choses you.’”

It was a foundation that would help shape his musical career. Plant later moved to California, where he started to play guitar and expand his repertoire, mixing in newfound sounds as he went. Plant later moved to Boston, where he really began to hone his skills as a professional musician. He continued traveling both coasts until fate took a hand. “I was playing in Napa Valley, and Rick Reiss, who was then the managing director for Sea Island, was there. He recruited me to come here and be the artist in residence for Sea Island. So we

112

GIM_1031 110-113.indd 112

came here and we’ve just stuck around … my wife and I love it,” he says with a smile. Plant still plays at the resort and takes the lead on musical events. He’s played at the company’s annual Southern Grown Festival, opening for bands such as the Avett Brothers and the Indigo Girls. Even so, he continues to focus on recording and developing his style. Plant’s music has had many rebirths and reinventions along the way. He has transformed from his reggae roots, branching out into a more independent style all his own. His most recent release — “I Was On The Moon” — is a reflection of that evolution. The seventh album Plant has completed, it’s a departure from his previous sound in many ways, but he feels it to be a more authentic representation of where he is today.

“The other albums were trying to find a sound really. It would meander, but it was mostly folk rock, a reggae song here and there. Really, what’s happened over time is that there were kind of gems but the songwriting has improved over this decade and a half,” he says. This fall, he has embarked on a tour of the West and East coasts to share his sound. “I hope to meet a lot of new fans. I have a core group of fans

somewhere between 4,000 to 10,000. It’s an indie artist following … I’m nowhere near famous, and I wouldn’t want to be. But I am trying to build on the audience,” he says with a laugh. And while performing and marketing a new album would be enough for most artists, Plant is continuing to record with his trio — Three Little Birds. In addition to Plant, who sings and plays guitar and percussion, the group also includes singer, Trina Meade, and guitarist, Pace Connor. “Trina … you hear her once and think ‘Oh my gosh, why isn’t this girl a star?’ And then you realize she was — she was on the road with the Indigo Girls. And then Pace … he is so good. He’s really under the radar, working mostly with Sea Island … he’s been here since the ’80s and ’90s. We have a real symbiotic relationship,” he says. The group, named for a Bob Marley tune, has played a number of local venues including many Sea Island performances. And they are currently getting ready to promote their Christmas album that will be released in early November. But regardless of where his future takes him, Plant’s goal remains the same. He’s not in search of fame or fortune — he just wants to be able to share the music he loves. “I’d love to have a big placement in a movie and touring. I’d like to have enough of an audience to have a flourishing career, enough to fill a theater but not so big that I couldn’t talk to the audience,” he says. “But I don’t want to be a superstar … that sounds horrible. I want to get to do what I love to do without having to worry about everything else.”

Five of Plant’s favorite albums Bob Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks” Paul Simon’s “Graceland” Bob Marley’s “Natty Dread” Bon Iver’s “Bon Iver” Michael Kiwanuka’s “Home Again”
