What is Goldsmiths Students’ Union?

But what is unique about us is that all the activities we coordinate, are led by you.

The Union is led by students who are elected annually by you, to represent your views to the College and oversee the wide range of services and facilities we provide.

Each area of the Union works slightly differently, and this guide gives you all the information you need to make choices about what, where and when to get involved according to your needs and interests.

An important principle of how the Union works is that everything we produce is constantly invested back into more and better support for you. We call this Full Circle.

As a student at Goldsmiths you are represented by four full-time officers who work within the Students’ Union. We are elected by you on a yearly basis through an election in which every student can vote. This means you have the power to steer and control the future of the Students’ Union by choosing the officers you feel best represent you.

As full-time officers we represent you on varying levels both within the Union and within the College. We sit on a number of College committees, alongside senior College staff, representing the student voice in key matters involving the future of Goldsmiths. We also work

on a number of projects ranging from improving campus facilities to providing students with academic advice and campaigning on the issues which directly affect you.

Throughout the year we will be utilising our direct access to senior figures within the College, and our forums (such as the student assembly) for open discussion to make sure that the quality of education and services constantly exceed your expectations.

Samson Osun - President Hi, I’m Samson and I am this year’s Students’ Union President.

I’ll be representing you and the rest of the student body on various Goldsmiths committees, ensuring your views are heard and they influence the decision makers within the College. Tama White - Welfare & Diversity Officer Hello! I’m Tama, your Welfare & Diversity Officer. This year promises to be an exciting one with lots of events and opportunities. This Autumn I’ll be launching our liberation campaigns 2012-13, as well as organising awareness campaigns around mental and sexual health, housing rights and the vicious cuts to our public services. Getting involved with us can mean a lot more than you think. Volunteering or working for us at the SU is of course a great way to make friends - but you can also enhance your skills, and most importantly try out new experiences. In just three short years you will be entering a very competitive job market - so make the most of your free time.

Our biggest piece of advice is to try out as much as you possibly can, find what you care about and dedicate yourself to those things.

Making the most of your time here can range from experiencing all the exciting things London has to offer, becoming President of the volleyball team, experiencing voluntary sector work - and anything in between. Read on or visit us online to find out more.

Getting involved in sports is a fantastic way to meet people and stay fit while at university. The great thing about sports at Goldsmiths is that beginners as well as experienced players are welcome and encouraged to join.

Competitive Teams These sports teams take part in weekly leagues and cups, or stand alone competitions, against other institutions at either a local or national level. The football teams play twice a week in University leagues, while the ju-jitsu team competes twice a year in national competitions. In recent years, we have won leagues, cups and competitions in a number of sports including volleyball, cheerleading and ju-jitsu. We’ve also had teams competing at the highest level in other areas such as athletics, judo and karate.

Goldsmiths sports are student-led, meaning you, the students, plan, organise and compete gaining fantastic skills and knowledge along the way. Also, if you find we are not currently offering something that you would like to take part in, you can get in touch with us and we will support you in creating the sports club you would like.

We offer two different types of sports memberships.

Recreational Teams These sports teams usually train on campus twice a week. There is always the option for individuals from these clubs to compete in competitions if they wish.

Training Both recreational and competitive sessions are coached by qualified coaches.

There is also the option for students to train and take qualifications to become coaches (or officials), leading to paid work for the teams / clubs.

Varsity Our teams compete annually for the Varsity Cup against our sporting rivals, the University of the Arts, London! This day of sports, in which nine or more teams compete against their Arts counterparts, is always fiercely contested.The winning Students’ Union takes the Varsity Cup for that year - and, of course, the bragging rights!

SOCIETIES Societies are student organised groups which meet frequently and put on events where like-minded individuals can get together and discuss or participate in their interests.

We have a huge selection of societies that is constantly growing and changing as students with different interests start new societies. Joining a society is a great way to meet like-minded people, to learn and try new things and share enthusiasm with other students.

Be Pro-Active, Not Reactive Continuing from last year, ‘Be Pro-Active, Not Reactive’ is an employability campaign that seeks to raise awareness of work opportunities and methods that students can use to enhance their skills and employability during their time at University.

NUS Anti-Cuts March November 21st 2012 - the NUS (National Union of Students) has organised a national demonstration against cuts, fees, student debt and privatisation.

Thousands will march on parliament to protect education for all members of our society despite the government’s efforts to exclude various social groups.

United Against Austerity October 20th 2012 - The Trade Union Congress (the umbrella organisation that works to defend the rights of several smaller Unions and their workers) will hold a mass demonstration in London to fight against the cuts and reduced public spending, sending out the clear message that we are against the Government attack on the public sector. Together we will be battling to secure a better future for the unemployed and young people of our country.

Getting involved with us is an excellent way to experience the world of media and communications. Whether you are dedicated to starting a career in journalism, or radio presenting is something you’d like to try out in your spare time, student media is where to start.

The Leopard Newspaper For those who are keen to cover a wide range of subjects related to university life, getting involved with The Leopard is the way forward! Goldsmiths Students’ Union is run by students for students. Each year we run elections and the successful candidates take on the responsibility of representing more than 9000 students. Four full-time officers are elected each year and spend the year working in the Union representing the student voice. Each officer is either a current student, who takes a year out of their studies, or a graduate who stood for election in their final year.

There are also many volunteer part-time officers who make up the Student Assembly, a democratic forum of debate where all students are welcome to bring forward proposed changes, and then vote on them.

Both the full-time and certain part-time officers have seats on key Goldsmiths decision making committees, meaning that your representatives really can influence change not only to the Union but to the College itself. Their influence doesn’t stop there, full- and part-time officers both go further afield in their capacity as your representatives taking your views to national forums of debate.

All positions offer great experience and will bolster even the strongest CV.

What is Student Assembly?

As mentioned before, the Student Assembly is a student-led forum put in place so that every student can suggest and influence key policies that shape the Union. The Assembly is held five times a year and is attended by all full- and part-time officers who give updates on current projects. In this way, it allows the student body to monitor and hold to account the officers they elected. This arena is also the home of change, where any student can bring forward a motion (an agenda of action, for the Union to act on) and where every student is free to vote for or against these motions. The Assembly is dependant on students to bring forward motions and to hold the officers to account – if you want to see change in the Union, this is the place to make it happen.

How do elections work?

Every year students are elected to fill both the full- and part-time positions available within the Union. These students are in place to make sure the Union remains student-focused and student-led.

Elections are won and lost through two elements; The Manifesto - A document which outlines what that student envisions for their year in office.

The Campaign - A week-long campaign during the voting period in which you get the chance to go out and speak to students, letting them know what your plans are (if you get elected) and convincing them that you are the right person for the job.

Whether you are running or just voting, using your Union and sharing your views will change student life for the better.

Welfare Every now and again students fall on hard times - and as a Students’ Union we are here to see you through them. Help and advice can range from support from our contract checking service if you are looking for housing, or just hearing from the full-time officer team on how they budgeted during their time as students. In addition, we can also support struggling students with hardship loans should they need a small amount of money to tide them over.

If you feel like University life is getting too much and you need someone to talk to, we have a confidentiality room which you can use at any time. Come and use our phone to make course-related calls or view our extensive information library which covers a range of welfare-related issues. If you have a problem, no matter how small, our dedicated Welfare & Diversity Officer Tama White can help or refer you to College services. www.goldsmithssu.org

Academic Advice For most, studying at University is largely incident-free, but some students occasionally find themselves in trouble with the University. Whether it is a single misunderstanding or a long-running dispute, we are here to provide students with support and advice. This ensures the decisions taken by Goldsmiths are fair and that students can understand what their options are.

Academic advice can range from guidance on switching courses, to help if you have been accused of plagiarism. For help, advice and information contact Limahl MacFarlane, the Advice Services Coordinator or Søren Goard, the Education Officer.

What is a DSC? Departmental Student Coordinators (DSCs) are regarded as ‘Super Course Representatives’ - they work collectively to provide a positive impact on their programme of study by representing the views of their students to their department, the College and the Students’ Union.

Your Departmental Student Coordinator is there to represent you, your academic interests and can help you initiate change or get your voice heard. The Union has DSCs for undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses. To find out who your DSC is and to get in touch, please visit goldsmithssu.org/dsc.

Becoming a DSC If you think you can initiate change, communicate effectively with students and staff, and deliver results throughout the year, then you could be just the person we’re looking for.

Each department has a staff member who is responsible for the Programme Monitoring and Representation scheme and all DSCs will receive full training and development from the Students’ Union.

There are positions for undergraduate and postgraduate students in all departments to work as part of a team of 50 who help promote quality and representation across the whole of Goldsmiths. Undergraduate recruitment tends to happen around March, whereas the recruitment of postgraduate DSCs occurs in October.

NURSERY

We run a small nursery for children of students and staff aged from 3 months up to 5, and it is one of the best in the local area.

Children are typically only accepted if they will be booked in for a minimum of two days a week to ensure that there is continuity and children can develop friendships.

The nursery is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm and fees are £55 per day, but Government grants and the College childcare bursary (set up following pressure by the SU) means that costs are normally considerably lower for students.

Please note that the nursery is almost fully booked for the coming year, however places do become available as children get older, and Nursery Manager Karen Roe will have details of other good-quality local childcare providers if we don’t have a space available for you.

The Stretch is the Students’ Union bar on the top floor of the SU building. It hosts nights from Monday to Friday, ranging from quiz and karaoke nights to the unmissable ‘Club Sandwich’ on Wednesdays.

Whether you’re here to enjoy live music or just catch up with mates while enjoying the cheapest drinks in New Cross,The Stretch is at the heart of College life.
