15 Years Ago Taken from the Eagle Files April 6, 2005 Reigning Miss Texas, Jamie Story of Houston, will make an appearance at the Famous Barbeque and Goat Cook-Off, April 23 at Goldthwaite City Park.   The High School Lady Eagles traveled to San Saba to compete in the San Saba Relays. In the varsity division the Lady Eagles won the meet beating San Saba by 44 points. The Eagles Varsity boys won the meet with a total of 170 points and the junior varsity boys came in second

52nd anniversary of the Goldthwaite Fire Department. It was organized on Tuesday afternoon, April 5, 1898, with 19 members.

Each member, besides putting out ďŹ res, had to pay dues of 10 cents a month.

85 Years Ago Taken from the Eagle Files April 5, 1935 A boy pupil in the South Bend school was brought to a physician here for treatment yesterday at noon because of a snake bite on his foot, just above the great toe. The boy was playing on the school grounds when the snake struck him, but they did not know what kind of snake.

It must not have been poisonous, however, as he was not suffering to any extent.

120 Years Ago Taken from the Eagle Files April 7, 1900 Uncle Wint Livingston and E.B. Anderson spent one day this week surveying a line between the Hawley and Welch and S.P. Parks tracts of land to make a road to Cryer Schoolhouse.   I.G. Collier, a progressive farmer of the Center City Community, accompanied by his two intelligent little sons, called on the Eagle Saturday.   J.S. Livingston, a wealthy stockman and owner of a plantation at Center City, was transacting business in the commercial hub this week.

Churches find new ways to serve

By Brian Whitt Goldthwaite Eagle   Faced with having to cancel worship services and Bible classes, Mills County churches are finding new ways to do God's work during the COVID-19 pandemic.   Many local churches have turned to the internet, posting sermons and devotionals on YouTube, Facebook, and their own websites. In the absence of regularly scheduled gatherings, some are also holding online get-togethers to help their members stay in touch with each other.   This shift to internet-based church services has not come without difficulties.

The Goldthwaite Church of Christ struggled to upload a message to YouTube last week due to heavy internet traffic, according to Minister William Eudy. First Baptist Church Pastor Greg Lewis told The Eagle his church had to shift from streaming services to recorded sermons, and he said he had heard of other local churches dealing with technical issues.   The impact of the coronavirus on Mills County's churches has taken various forms. Communion, a vital part of Christian services, is now being taken at home by some residents.

Christ began providing takehome communion after regular services were suspended. Lewis said contributions are down, which limits the work churches can do. FBC has made efforts to assist members in giving online or by text, or setting up regular drafts from their bank accounts when they are unable to contribute at the church office. Other local churches have been seeking solutions for this problem ever since traditional services were canceled.   In spite of a host of new limitations, Christians continue to worship and work in the community. Lewis told The

Eagle the Mills County Ministerial Association stands ready to meet the needs of those struggling during the pandemic. Lewis, the Association's current president, said requests for aid have not been unusually high thus far.   "We anticipate a growing need," he said, adding, "For the most part, people are able to get what they need."   As the pandemic continues, local churches will continue to take a central role in holding the community together.   "We're kind of all in the state of readiness," Lewis said.

Masons offer services in Texas   You know Masonic Children and Family Services of Texas for the Fantastic Teeth Fan Club, but we also have a program that assists children and families in need across the state of Texas.   We realize that many families are being economically impacted by COVID-19 and may be facing a time of uncertainty until we as a country collectively return to normal.   Our organization may be able to bridge the gap for such families.   Masonic Children & Family Services of Texas is a non-profit children’s charity working for Texans.

D.W. Shaw was elected as alderman and Mayor Y.B. Johnson was re-elected.   Eagle Field received a major boost and improvement the past week with the installation of a new all electric football scoreboard. The project was ďŹ nanced through popular subscription with a large group of ďŹ rms and individuals supporting it with contributions ranging from $5 to $250. List price for the new scoreboard was $2,150. The student council paid $2,076 after a cash discount.

While we shelter in place here in Central Texas, nature carries on with business as usual. Orange-breasted robins hop in the high grass chirping "it's here, it's here," bluebonnets bloom along the highways, and once-brown fields shift to bright green, all signs of Spring's arrival.

This is anything but a normal Spring, though. We are now accustomed to seeing reports on the increasing numbers of infected and dying people worldwide, particularly in this country. Locally, the disease has taken no

lives so far, but the pandemic weighs on our minds. Stores are emptier than they were mere weeks ago, and there is little pedestrian traffic. Driving southwest Saturday, there seemed to be fewer cars on the highway than usual, and even though the scenery was familiar, I couldn't shake the sense everything was slightly off-kilter.

When I got to San Saba, I drove around the downtown area, getting my first look at the recently restored courthouse and the fire-gutted building that had housed Lowe's grocery store. I also verified that one of my favorite barbecue joints, Young's, had left town. They apparently moved to Lampasas before the coronavirus scare took hold. With COVID-19 an ever-present threat, I didn't leave the car while there or interact with anyone. San Saba looked a lot like other towns hereabouts, too still by far.

In spite of recent developments, we are blessed to live here. In places like New York City, many people are spending their days cooped up in tiny apartments. In the Metroplex, the police are ticketing drivers who cannot provide a good reason for having left their homes. None of these folks have the option of getting outside and enjoying a Spring day like we can.

Saturday, I saw beautiful flowers blooming, cattle grazing or resting under trees,

and greenery in all directions.

All of that came with a sense of freedom currently absent from other aspects of daily life. When I stopped the car to photograph flowers, I was alone, but there was no sense of loneliness, or need to distance myself from others.

Back at home, I knew I could walk around in the yard at any time, and gaze at the night sky for as long as I liked.

In Mills County, we still have options for enjoying God's creation without putting ourselves or others at risk. For that, we should be thankful. We may not be able to do everything we were doing before COVID-19, but we are not trapped. That's one very good reason why living in rural Texas right now is such a blessing.

Eagle Columnist This year’s coronavirus epidemic isn’t the first time a pandemic stopped high school spring sports in Texas.

In 2009 a swine flu pandemic stopped UIL spring sports for two weeks. The Goldthwaite baseball team had just completed its District 14-1A schedule with a 10-0 record. At the time, Eagles coach Tim Spradley worried the two-week layoff would stall his team’s momentum, including a 12-game win streak. “… I was mad as a hornet,” Spradley said in 2009. “I thought, ‘What a zoo. What a circus. What a mess.’ ” There were differences in 2009 from today’s coronavirus pandemic. The 2009 layoff was just two weeks.

Schools remained opened and sports teams could conduct regular practices. They just couldn’t play teams from other schools.

Perhaps no one has a better view of the differences than Clay Phillips, a catcher for the 2009 Eagles and currently the head baseball coach at Class 2A Ralls in the Lubbock area.

“It’s crazy what’s happening right now,” Phillips said of the indefinite suspension of UIL sports because of coronavirus. The earliest sports can resume is May 4.

“It’s disappointing, but I’m still hopeful we can at least get something going. We were 8-3 and had won our district opener. We won 18 games last year and only lost one starter so we have high expectations this year,” Phillips said.

“When we had the swine flu (in 2009), we didn’t have to stop practicing. Other than that, I don’t remember a whole lot about it.”

Neither Spradley nor his players remember much about the swine flu pandemic because of what happened in the 2009 playoffs. After a bidistrict bye, Goldthwaite beat Axtell in the area round, and the Eagles swept De Leon in a best-of-three regional quarterfinals series.

Goldthwaite lost two of three games to Blue Ridge in a regional semifinals series -marking the farthest the Eagles have ever advanced in the postseason.

The 2009 Eagles also set school records with 24 victories (against six losses)

and posted a 17-game win streak that extended into the playoffs. After losing a nondistrict game to defending state champion Bosqueville on March 21, Goldthwaite went more than two months without losing -- until a playoff loss to No. 4-ranked Blue Ridge on May 28. Four players from the 2009 team played college baseball at least briefly -- led by Phillips, who played in junior college and senior college.

The historic success of the 2009 season reduced the swine flu pandemic to a footnote.

“I don’t think we realized that we were winning 17 games in a row,” said Trey Horton, a senior pitcher and second baseman in 2009.

“We just expected to win.

That was our attitude.”

The 2009 Eagles could pitch, hit and field. Playing almost half their games in the cozy local ballpark before the fences were raised, Goldthwaite clobbered 32 home runs in 30 games and posted a ridiculous .448 team batting average prior to the postseason.

Infielder Tyler Gonzales led the team in homers with eight and Phillips had six. Joe Perez, a freshman infielder, led the Eagles with 40 runs batted in while Gonzales had 36 RBI. Walt Clifton, a pitcher and shortstop, led the Eagles with a .593 batting average and was followed

by Phillips at .515 and Trey Horton at .506. Phillips also scored 48 runs in 29 games.

“I remember in one home game, Walt Clifton hit a homer over one of the light poles. The ball landed on the other side of the railroad track. We never found that ball,” Spradley said.

“During batting practice, we had to send three or four players to the railroad tracks or else we would have run out of baseballs. I can remember Garrett Schwartz saying, ‘One more, Coach. Let me hit one more.’ He’d end up hitting a whole other bucket of balls.”

Goldthwaite’s three starting pitchers -- seniors Clifton and Trey Horton, along with freshman Tyler Horton -- combined for 19-2 record.

They also combined for 133 strikeouts against 54 walks.

Trey Horton recorded 65 strikeouts in 55 innings.

2009 Eagles overcame swine flu pandemic to post historic season Defensively, the Eagles averaged only one error per game.

“We (pitchers) threw strikes and relied on our fielders,” Trey Horton said.

“We didn’t make errors. For all our hitting, we had pitching and defense -- and that’s what you need to win in high school baseball.”

Perhaps the biggest asset the 2009 Eagles possessed was camaraderie among the players. Most of them had played baseball together since t-ball. They played together through Little League, the teenage league and even fielded a high school eligible team. Their youth coaches throughout this journey -John Clifton, Jimmy Horton and Chipper Phillips -- provided the players with stability and fundamentals.

“We all grew up playing ball together,” Phillips said.

“We knew each other, and we trusted each other. You knew the guy next to you was going to do his job. I would say we had to be one of the best hitting teams in the state.”

By the time Goldthwaite High School added baseball as a UIL sport after a 50-year hiatus in 2007, the Eagles were primed to win immediately.

“They competed against each other in practice as hard as they did in the games,” Spradley said. “They knew how to play the game. They played hard and they competed hard. And they liked being around each other.”

The swine flu pandemic lasted worldwide from January 2009 to August 2010.

Even though it stopped UIL sports for two weeks -- a small challenge compared to the threats of coronavirus -- it seemed like a long time when you’re waiting to start the playoffs. But because of their historic season, the swine flu became a small detail in the 2009 baseball season.

“It was,” Trey Horton said, “a wonderful season with some of my best friends for life.”

By Rusty Hollingsworth GHS Principal Well, we have one week behind us. What we’ve learned so far is that we miss our students, and getting to see them each day. However, in this environment, we have to do the best that we can. We will continue to monitor and assess the instruction that we are sending to our students to make sure that it is relevant, and high quality. Thank you to all of you who filled out our Flex Learning Log, and got that turned into us. If you haven’t done that yet, please go ahead and complete that.

We use that form for a bunch of different stuff. One is documentation that the student is doing the work. The main advantage to us is it is a valuable piece to know if we are sending too much instruction,

not enough instruction, or if a particular student needs more help. Please make sure that you turn one in each Monday. I have another one attached to this email if you need it, or you can find it on the High School webpage.

Hard copies are available at Schwartz’s, and the high school foyer.

I can’t stress enough how important it is for your student to stay in communication with their teachers. No one wants a student to struggle during this time. However, as good as our teachers are, they have not been able to master “reading minds.”

Therefore, the only way for them to know is if the student is communicating. Your student knows how to communicate with their teacher, but they may need some

encouraging from you, the parent. There are no “dumb questions,” or questions that are too small. If your student is struggling, chances are it’s a “communication issue.”

Finally, we have just been given notification that the Governor has closed schools until May 4th. As we get closer to that date, we will keep you informed to local school district decisions. As of now, we will continue to provide the highest level of education to our students that we can.

Please continue to be a partner in your student’s education. Working together is the best way to educate. If you get a chance, please reach out to a teacher. They are working extremely hard during this time. An encouraging word from you could make their day.

I really want to help make your job easier and communication with the teacher is the only way.

Here are a few tips to make Remote School not only bearable, but educational: Find a place to study. It needs to be a place in which the student will not be disturbed or disrupted.

Set a regular block of time and stick to it. Three to four hours each day should be sufficient.

Check email and every online class every day. Sometimes, someone else will post a question that is common to everyone.

Ask questions for clarity, more information, for the dickens of it. Ask lots of questions.

Do the work. All of it.

BEFORE the due dates so corrections can be made.

I can’t speak for every teacher, but I have the feeling most would agree here. We want to help. We want every student to succeed. We want to have all of our assignments turned in early or on time, because we also want a weekend without even more work trying to get the assignments out of those who are late getting them in.

Suspension of UIL activities remains in effect

By Mike Lee Eagle Contributor With no new announcements from the UIL within the last week, the indefinite suspension of Texas public schools extracurricular activities remains in effect.

This suspension, which is a result of the COVID-19, or coronavirus, pandemic includes athletic and academic contests, and the earliest competition could resume is May 4.

coaching of UIL activities is allowed through electronic, video or teleconferencing type methods. Schools shall limit instruction for UIL activities to a maximum of eight hours per week per activity, in addition to a maximum of sixty minutes per day Monday-Friday.

For athletic activities that are out of season, schools shall limit remote instruction to a maximum of 60 minutes per day Monday-Friday.

The suspension of organized practices with coaches physically present remains in effect, and most school facilities remain closed.

She said they are there distributing food the fourth

Tuesday of every month, and even at Christmas time, they typically handle about 150 to 160 families, so this was a record for them.

“We saw a lot of regulars but there were also a lot of new faces ... new recipients AND new volunteers,” Hemsath said.

With some locals unable to return to work since the COVID-19 restrictions have gone into place, and children being home three meals a

day with school closings, the need for this type of service is higher than ever.

Hemsath went on to say food boxes are also distributed at the Goldthwaite Evangelism Center Food Pantry in Goldthwaite on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.

The Central Texas Food Bank mobile pantry food truck also travels to nearby Star the first Wednesday of the month at the old Star School, and in San Saba on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, she said, setting up at 1190 S. Thomas Road in San Saba.

Moore, Jernigan, Evans make GHS graduate writes TABC all-region basketball teams children's book

By Mike Lee Eagle Contributor Goldthwaite seniors Grayson Moore and Callie Jernigan, along with Priddy senior Linda Evans, were named to their respective all-region teams for the 20192020 season by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC).

Additionally, Jernigan and Lady Eagle teammates Jessica Horton, Kylee Medina and Macy Seward were named to the Class 2A Academic All-State Team by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA).

Moore was named to the TABC Class 2A Region II boys’ team after leading Goldthwaite to an 8-0 record in District 10-2A for the second consecutive season. In 2019-2020, Moore averaged 16.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-4 forward also shot 45 percent from the field and 32 percent from 3-point range.

Jernigan was named to the TABC Class 2A Region II girls’ team after helping the Lady Eagles to a 26-7 overall record and a runner-up finish in District 10-2A this past season. The senior guard led the Goldthwaite girls in scoring at 9.2 points per game, in free-throw shooting at 68 percent, and in minutes played at 25 per game. Jernigan also averaged 2.2 steals and 2.0 assists.

Evans was named to the

TABC Class 1A Region III girls’ team after leading the Lady Pirates to a 12-0 record in District 17-1A this past season. The senior guard averaged 15.6 points, 2.7 steals and 2.3 assists, plus she led Priddy with 49 3-point baskets.

Jernigan was joined on the 2A Region II girls’ team by junior Natalee Finley from District 10-2A champion Santo.

The TABC all-state teams included San Saba junior Logan Glover in Class 2A boys, along with San Saba junior Courtnee Cash and Mason junior McKenzie Cano on the 2A girls’ team. Goldthwaite will move into a Region IV district with San Saba and Mason for the next two basketball seasons.

On the TGCA all-state teams, District 10-2A was represented by Finley and junior Cassidy Walker from Santo, along with senior Lauryl Stegall from Hico.

Mason, the Region IV champion and Class 2A state semifinalist, had three players named all-state by the TGCA in Cano, along with sophomores Lauren Olson and Tristin Keller. San Saba, which split four games with Mason last season but lost to the Lady Punchers in the Region IV championship game, had two players make the TGCA all-state team in juniors Cash and Brighton Adams.

Well, in Florida, just such a thing can happen. A sudden and dramatic drop in temperature in this normally warm climate forces reptiles into hibernation, making them drop from their perches and down into whatever is below them.

Lauren Darnell saw exactly this phenomenon happening in a news story and knew it would make the perfect children’s book.

“I like to describe my book, ‘The Day It Rained Iguanas’ as ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ meets ‘Have You Filled Your Bucket Today?’” said author Lauren (Arndt) Darnell, who grew up and graduated in Goldthwaite.

“It’s about a little girl named Maria who lives in Florida. She’s horribly afraid of lizards until one of them falls into her yard right in front of her. Leaving it out in the cold would be the easy thing, but not the right thing, so instead, she makes it her mission to save all the falling iguanas,” Darnell said.

This is Darnell’s 11th picture book, so the writing process is not new to her. “I’ve been writing stories since I was eleven, but I’ve been writing professionally for seven years, ” she said. “I’m self-publishing this book using Kickstarter. It’s not like

GoFundMe where if you don’t make the goal, you keep the money. With Kickstarter, if you don’t make the goal, you don’t get to make the product or keep any of the donations,” Darnell said.

Darnell explained that she chose to self-publish ‘The Day It Rained Iguanas’ because large companies don’t want to pay someone who doesn’t both write and illustrate a book to avoid paying two people.

“With traditional publishing, they have to pay you, the author, as well as the illustrator, and additional royalties to the illustrator, ” she said.

“Thousands of picture books will get submitted but only a handful of them get picked up by the large publishing companies. ” Darnell said it would mean the world to her if locals supported her project.

“Goldthwaite has been an amazing place that pulls together behind its community members. It feels like home there and people really care,” she said.

“Writing is a lot of practice, perseverance, and believing in yourself. Having the inspiration goes a long way, but it’s patience that finishes a book,” Darnell said. If published, ‘The Day It Rained Iguanas’ will be released in September and will be available on her website and Amazon.com.

“Writing is really a passion of mine, especially children’s literature. It’s something I re-

ally believe in. This book is about overcoming fear, and compassion and kindness. I think it’s a great book for the classroom or bedtime and I really think it’s a really enjoyable but educational book, that lots of kiddos will be able to relate to,” Darnell said.

The total goal to publish the book is $4,600 but 20% of the goal was met on the first day, and the book was featured on the front page of the website under the “Projects We Love” heading.

The fundraiser on Kickstarter will last until April 24, and a first edition of the book will only cost a $15 pledge.

There are donation levels for any budget, but if you are wanting a special thank you in the book, $100 will get you one along with two copies and a lot of other great stuff.

Changes teachers face when not face-to-face

By Madison Lewis Goldthwaite Eagle Imagine a room full of curious kids suddenly becoming an unseen audience on a computer camera or an icon on Google Classroom. This is the reality for teachers across the nation, including our community, due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“We’re maneuvering through the situation and we’re working together as teachers and parents to work it out,” Goldthwaite eighth grade math teacher Melissa Bristol said. “I feel like everyone is doing the best they can and doing what they can for the students and that’s what it’s all about.”

Goldthwaite CISD provided the middle school students a Chromebook if they did not have access to technology to complete online assignments.

“I created a Google Classroom and posted a few 20-30 minute lessons for them,” Bristol said. “It’s given me more challenges than in a typical school year. I don’t usually have to sit down and figure stuff like this out but in this circumstance, I need to.”

Bristol gave advice to parents to assist their students during this time.

“Be willing to sit down and support your kid,” she said.

“Being a support for them emotionally as well as in their

learning is really important.”

Although teaching online has proved difficult, Bristol said she loves seeing everyone working together.

“This is when its awesome to live in Goldthwaite because you see how everyone’s trying their best to help the community. You can see how everyone’s come together,” she said.

Dena Peters, a high school math teacher in Mullin, explains how her job has become more difficult due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

“For me, it is more difficult to create assignments from home,” Peters said. “(At home), I don’t have a copy machine and all of the manipulatives that I have at school. I am having to rely on websites to give me ideas for the kids’ assignments. However, the kids seem to be adjusting to the online assignments quite well.

Kids are so good with technology and catch on so quickly that they have to tell me what to do to fix my technology problems most of the time!”

Peters gave some advice to parents who have suddenly become home-school teachers.

“The best thing our parents can do to help their kids succeed at home is to monitor, monitor, monitor,” she said. “Have their student actually show them the assignments they are doing on-

line. The parents can call the teachers and administration at any time to get updates on their kids. The parents can also go to Gradebook, which is our online grading system and monitor the students’ grades in each class.

We are very fortunate to have a great set of kids and parents that are really doing a good job of this right now.”

Peters noted this pandemic has not been easy on anyone.

“I feel very sorry for our seniors having to end their high school career this way. I hate for the kids to have to possibly miss their prom. We are such a small school, we truly feel like family. We love going to school and seeing each other.

I know my high school kids

are ready to go back to school ASAP,” Peters said.

Although this current situation is tough, Peters gives hope to her students.

“We all have to hang in there, be strong and do what we have to do to succeed. Whether it is a new method of learning or having to stay home and not being around their peers, our kids will do this and succeed! I have all the faith in the world in all of our Mullin ISD kids and staff. We will get through this together!” she said.

Priddy kindergarten and Yearbook/Journalism teacher, Cindy Hurst, is also having to adjust her teaching.

“Mostly, I am working from home and for kindergarten, we

made the assignments thirty minutes a day on one website and thirty minutes a day on another. They are already familiar with the sites,” Hurst said.

Hurst only has one student without internet access.

“For that student, I had to make copies of reading, writing, and math pages. We are focusing on just keeping the basics going,” she said.

Hurst feels most parents are handling the whole ordeal well, but encourages them to watch how they act and what they say.

“A big thing right now is to try to remain calm and joyful and keep a routine going. Parents should try and try not to get frustrated because children pick up on that,” Hurst said.

All three teachers mentioned they miss their students and can’t wait to be back in the classroom.

“I miss them. As fun as spring breaks are and the rejuvenation from the rigor of school, when it comes down to it, I’m ready to go back,” Bristol told The Eagle. “Every day is a gift to not just be a math teacher but to be a role model.

To me, it means showing Jesus to my students, and that doesn’t always mean saying the word but just being a light and hope to them. The smile and a kind word, that’s what I miss. The relationship aspect of my job.

That’s what I miss the most.”

April Fool’s day is today. Only trouble is there is no one to fool. We are all staying inside; that is, if we are doing what we are supposed to do. Frank and I have come to the office but business is slow so we are finding time to spend with each other.

I talked to my cousin, Judy, in Austin yesterday and she told me that her and her husband, Merrill, were sitting outside in their swing that is located on their front patio and two cars stopped. She said she did not know them but both of them said, “You two are sitting too close to each other!” Judy was telling me that in nine months or more she expects a baby boom or . . . possibly lots of divorces. We laughed!

She said, “Some of these couples will find out that they really don’t like each other after being closed up in their houses for months.

She may be right. Judy and Merrill have been married probably as long as Frank and myself. Judy is one

year older than I am. We played together as young girls and somewhere I have a photo of all three of us sitting in my grandmother’s swing. It must have been a Sunday because we were all dressed up.

I have been talking to all of my three children and some of the grandchildren almost every day. I talked to Blake and Jordan this morning (Blake is our oldest grandson). He and his wife live in an apartment in the Galleria area of Dallas. They are fine. She is working from home but Blake got laid off. Troubled times for everyone.

As far as I know not anybody in Goldthwaite or Mills County has the coronavirus, unless they had it or have it and don’t realize it. I sincerely hope that it stays that way.

wears gloves and doesn’t have face to face contact with anyone. They communicate with phone calls, e-mail, etc. Stuart is probably bored because he is a people person and loves most all of his customers.

Stuart has always been a character. He told me one time that he asked one of his customers if he needed any blinker fluid. How crazy is that!

Frank and I enjoyed church services on-line Sunday with Steven and Debra and the kids. Dr. Tom Cody Graves and Carol joined us as did Dr. Cody Graves and his wife, Tracy and their two girls. We enjoyed BBQ ribs, chicken fajita meat, and BBQ brisket and all the trimmings.

I contributed a chocolate cake and a corn dip with Fritos. There was fruit, vegetables, tortillas, salsa, and other desserts too. Not anyone went away hungry.

I left the cake with them.

After lunch we all played a yard game called Corn Hole. Frank and I did not fare well but some of the others got the bag into the corn hole which counted for three points each time.

And if your bag landed on the board it counted for one point. A beautiful day to be outdoors, a lovely church service on-line, and good times being outdoors.

— Woodrow Wilson The strain on the world — the country, Texas, and Mills County — is palpable right now. I can feel it as much as the next person. The COVID-19 pandemic, and all the related hardships and challenges, is no fun at all, to say the least. I have already noticed, however, that there is still so much for which to be grateful; some good has come out of this situation, too.

Since this all got very serious a few weeks ago, I have seen some things that make me shake my head in disgust, but I have also seen some very impressive expressions of support, helpfulness, generosity, and so on. When I am ready to scream to the heavens that perhaps we’re not worth saving after all, I choose to focus on those redeeming stories, pictures, and moments.

Teachers and school administrators all over are going the extra miles for the kids not able to go to school. Couples are having date nights in their backyards. Normally busy parents are spending extra time with their children, and families are learning what quality time is all over again.

I heard a parent once boast about his child that whenever he bought her a package of Reese’s peanut butter cups, she would always eat one immediately, and then save the second one for her little brother. This small act made this father so proud. I didn’t think it was honestly that great when I heard the story, because I was not a parent at the time. As a parent now, however, I get it. I mean I really get it. When I see one of my children doing something kind for one of the others, even something small, it fills my heart to overflowing. To me, that is the single purest form of all that is good about human beings.

Here we are in this mess together, and I have seen and heard about things that fill my heart in much the same way. It’s honestly something to behold against the backdrop of tragedy and fear.

Millions of people are doing their own part to help, to be responsible, to preserve, to encourage ... and frankly, I’m pretty damn proud of us.

White House grants disaster declaration for Texas President Trump on March 25 issued a major disaster declaration for the state of Texas as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump’s action came at the request of Gov. Greg Abbott, who is seeking additional federal assistance to combat the disease. In recent days Abbott issued multiple waivers of state laws to remove barriers limiting the response to the pandemic. He also activated the Texas National Guard to be prepared to assist with response efforts.

Abbott said the president’s declaration “opens up new sources of funding for individual and public assistance that will help Texas respond to this public health emergency and protect public health and safety.”

Federal aid is earmarked to overcome current and prospective shortages of personal protective gear, medical equipment, testing supplies, hospital beds and medical personnel.

Meanwhile, Abbott has ordered the temporary closure of in-person school operations and prohibited non-critical visits to nursing homes, retirement or long-term care facilities. He also has mandated that Texans avoid: —Social gatherings of more than 10 people; —Dine-in eating and drinking at

bars or restaurants; and —Gyms or massage establishments.

On March 28 the Texas Department of State Health Services reported 25,483 people had been tested so far for COVID-19 in Texas. Of those, 2,552 tests were reported as positive and there had been 34 deaths.

Quarantine orders issued Gov. Abbott on March 26 issued an executive order mandating a self-quarantine for individuals traveling to Texas as their final destination through an airport from the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut area or from the city of New Orleans.

Abbott said the order, consistent with the guidance of Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, would be enforced by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Self-quarantines will last 14 days or for the duration of a person’s presence in

Texas, whichever is shorter.

Abbott said the executive order does not apply to people traveling in connection with military service, emergency response, health response or critical-infrastructure functions, as may be determined by the Texas Division of Emergency Management.

The executive order would remain in force until he modifies, amends, rescinds or supersedes it, Abbott said.

On March 29, Abbott issued another executive order that expands the quarantine mandate to include air travelers arriving from the states of California, Louisiana and Washington and the cities of Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit and Miami.

A person in quarantine is prohibited from allowing visitors into or out of the designated quarantine location — other than a physician or healthcare provider — and is prohibited from visiting any public spaces.

TWC waives some requirements News from the Library for unemployment benefits Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) to waive the waiting week, for Unemployment Benefits. In addition to waiving the waiting week, TWC is exercising its authority under the Governor’s declaration of a Statewide Disaster to waive Unemployment Insurance work search requirements effective immediately. These measures support the State’s efforts to address the impact the COVID-19 virus is having on the state’s economy and its workforce.

The waiting week is the first payable week of an individual’s claim for Unemployment Benefits. Under normal circumstances, TWC cannot pay for the first week of a claim until an individ-

ual receives 2 times their weekly benefit amount and returns to full-time work or has exhausted their benefits.

However, by waiving the waiting week, Gov. Abbott has provided the opportunity for TWC to provide relief to Texans who need it.

Previously to be eligible for unemployment benefits, applicants were required to register for work search on WorkinTexas.com and meet minimum number of work search activities per week.

TWC is temporarily waiving these requirements to ensure all Texans can have access to resources when in need.

Those seeking to apply for Unemployment Benefits will need to submit an application. In order to apply you will need:

• Last employer's business name and address • First and last dates (month, day and year) you worked for your last employer • Number of hours worked and pay rate if you worked this week (including Sunday) • Information related to your normal wage • Alien Registration Number (if not a U.S. citizen or national) Once you have an unemployment benefits claim, you can sign up for Electronic Correspondence for online access to your unemployment benefits correspondence. Electronic Correspondence allows you to receive most, but not all, of your unemployment notices and forms electronically in a secure, online mailbox. You

are responsible for regularly checking your online inbox, regardless of whether you receive an email notifying you of new mail. All Electronic Correspondence documents are also available as accessible versions for visually impaired customers.

Thursday, March 26, 2020 SAN SABA – Receipts totaled 424 head with no sale at Mason due to the heavy rains that fell over the weekend. The cattle futures finally got unlocked from the stock market and the oil futures and saw a big increase since last Friday.The demand for beef has been extremely strong as many retailers continue to restock and sell out again. The stocker steers were $15-$25 higher and stocker heifers were $10-$15 higher. The feeder steers sold $15-$20 higher and the heifers were $10 higher.

Packer cows were $3-$5 higher and bulls were steady.
