In 2013 Show Me the Green I’m not talking about Packer Green, I’m not talking about behind the green door and I’m not talking about being green with envy. I’m asking to get me to the green--the putting surface that is. Golf, like everything else, has become a lot more complicated. Technology has taken over the sport. A generation or two ago a discussion on golf would include keeping your left arm straight and your eye on the ball. Now it’s as likely to include terms like “coefficient of restitution” (COR — the amount of energy transferred between the clubface and ball at moment of impact). However, I think I’ve found help and while it is new technology, it has actually helped me hit 8 greens in regulation this past week. I’m talking about a product called www.SwingTip.com. SwingTip shows me what happened, why it happened and how to fix it. It uses Bluetooth and transmits real-time swing data right to my phone. I have to tip my hat to the gang at SwingTip--cool stuff. The hype and news for 2013 was all about the movement of players and sponsors and turns out, it’s just that--hype. Like Nike’s acquisition of Rory McIlroy; now toted as the $250 million dollar man. Funny that the world’s number one player has not had such a great start going into the New Year. Perhaps it’s the clubs? These are the best months for golf in Arizona—the Waste Management Phoenix Open (aka the largest party on the grass), the World Matchplay Accenture, the Senior Women’s Tour and the LPGA roll into town. Who has it better than us? Speaking of great golf, be sure get some tickets to the RR Donnelley now. Entering its third consecutive year, the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup will be played March 12-17 at Wildfire Golf Club at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa. To purchase tickets, go to www.LPGAFoundersCup.com or call 1-888-LPGATIX. I’ve been working in the golf business for over 18 years now. I’ve enjoyed every single day. Well, almost every day. I have seen many ups and downs, but the ups definitely outweigh the downs. That’s the result of a few things. First, the love I have for game of golf and second, my values in helping golf companies spread the word about their product or service. So when you’re out there in the grass, remember that this game has an interesting way of imitating life or, I guess, vice versa. For those who aren’t golfers, this may seem like an odd topic. How could a game about controlling a little white ball be so relevant? Let me explain with a little help from a legend of the game…. “This is a game of misses. The guy who misses the best is going to win.” – Ben Hogan There you have it—it’s ok to miss. I’ve found that balance is the key in life. It helps us to improve and appreciate all we have. So let’s agree, do our best to keep things simple and joyful in the here and now for 2013. Get out there and play some golf today! 4

header Golf Architect Ian Scott-Taylor Welsh-born golf course architect Ian ScottTaylor is a talented and knowledgeable student of the world’s great golf courses designed by the revered triumvirate of Alister MacKenzie, Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast, whose portfolios of work were created during what was known as golf’s “Golden Age” in the early 1900s. His practice, originally founded in Wales and now headquartered in Easton, Maryland, is dedicated to preserving the values of old world course architecture in the game of golf. Gary Player praised Scott-Taylor’s award-winning Hunters Oak Golf Club design in Queenstown, Maryland, by proclaiming: “What a test of golf; you might as well be right in the middle of Scotland.” Hunters Oak also was acclaimed as the best British links interpretation in the U.S., and for his exceptional work Scott-Taylor was cited by Golf Digest as one of the “Top 25 Hottest

Golf Architects.” For more information, visit www.ianscott-taylor.com. In 2001, Scott-Taylor was engaged by Hopkinton Country Club in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, to redesign an existing course on the site and transform it to a throwback classic architectural style. Scott-Taylor combined the design philosophies of Ross and MacKenzie and the result was something Masters champion Ian Woosnam called “a great achievement of old fashioned golf architecture. This fall the club invited Scott-Taylor back to rework the 10th hole. The architect dedicated his redesign to MacKenzie and incorporated evocative style traits that now make this 400 yard par-4 a real stunner and a members’ conversation topic. In reconfiguring the 10th green, Scott-Taylor managed to incorporate MacKenzie’s love of the famous Redan hole at Scotland’s North Berwick Golf Club, which creates havoc with putts on a surface that slopes from right to left.

Everybody loves a celebration, and golfers are no exception. It has long been a tradition after a round of golf to gather together and celebrate a win or merely enjoy the company of friends, new and old, with a second round at “the 19th hole,” a slang term used in golf that refers to a pub, bar, or restaurant on or near the golf course. Two Good Rounds is an international tribute to 36 of the World’s Greatest Golfers and the golf lifestyle, which often includes the enjoyment of drinks. In each chapter, golf writer Elisa Gaudet asks a notable professional golfer the same questions: What is your favorite drink? What is your favorite clubhouse or 19th hole? And what is a special time or memory from a 19th hole? If you ever got a hole in one and if you bought the clubhouse a drink? The results yielded a wide array of answers ranging from crazy celebrations after a win to heartfelt memories of childhoods spent playing golf with family and friends. From the Arnold Palmer (½ lemonade, ½ iced tea) to the margarita (the preferred drink of tour star Vijay Singh), to Lorena Ochoa’s favorite childhood memories from her beloved Guadalajara and Graeme McDowell’s celebration after his US Open win. Drinks and golf are inextricably linked and this fun feel good golf book, Two Good Rounds, shows you how. Elisa Gaudet has spent the past several years working in the golf industry in the U.S. and Latin America. She worked for the PGA Tour including executing the EMC World Cup in 2002 and the Tour de las Americas before founding Executive Golf International in 2003, a strategic golf marketing firm that works with clients to develop and implement golf-related programs. Prior to golf, Elisa worked in the entertainment industry for over ten years as a model and SAG and AFTRA actress. She has appeared on numerous radio and TV programs and has been a guest speaker on a variety of golf topics. She has written several golf-related articles and her syndicated “On the Lip” column has been running since 2003. In 2011 Elisa authored the book Two Good Rounds- 19th Hole Stories from the World’s Greatest Golfers and launched the Two Good Rounds brand. She splits her time between New York City and Palm Beach, Florida. www.twogoodrounds. com / www.execgolfintl.com / www.onthelip.com Arizona Golf Central • Volume 3, Issue 1

2013 Phoenix Open Another year come and gone and another “party on the grass” can be counted as successful. There is not another place on this planet like The Waste Management Phoenix Open. This event has become a national attendance breaker on the PGA Tour. The Waste Management Open is to Phoenix as Mardi Gras is to New Orleans. From knickerbockers ... layered pastel polos, firecracker shorts, and stilettos, Phoenix comes decked out. Heck, even the people who put on the event brazenly wear head-to-toe midnight blue velour tracksuits. It’s fabulously odious! This year didn’t disappoint the golfers in the world either. We saw everything from kicking footballs to caddy races, Bubba Watson whooping up the crowd and James Hahn taking it to a whole new level “Gangnam Style’ . Lefty Phil Mickelson completed a wire-to-wire win. Mickelson missed a chance for a 59 in the first round when his birdie putt on the final hole caught the right edge of the cup, curled 180 degrees and stayed out. He settled for a 60 and followed with rounds of 65 and 64 to take a six-stroke lead into the final round. Mickelson shot a 4-under 67 to finish at 28-under 256, two strokes off the PGA TOUR record of 254 set by Tommy Armour III in the 2003 Texas Open. The 42-year-old former Arizona State star won after struggling the last two weeks — tying for 37th at La Quinta in his opener and 51st at Torrey Pines — and making news by talking about tax increases. Phil moved to No. 3 in the race for the FedEx Cup after earning 500 points for his victory at TPC Scottsdale. “It’s an important one for me, because it’s been a while since I won, been a while since I’ve been in contention,” Mickelson said. “I was certainly nervous heading into Sunday. I think the thing I’m most excited about was the way I was able to regain control of my thoughts after a few shots early on that I didn’t care for.” 10

AARON OLSON

Where were you born? Did you grow up there?

Chetek, WI. It’s a sprawling metropolis of 2,000 people in NW Wisconsin. I grew up there and lived in that area more or less until about 4 years ago.

What do you do for a living (or when you aren’t playing golf)? I have my own business as a golf instructor at the Raven Golf Club - Phoenix.

Do you have a favorite designer for suits, shoes, etc?

Anything by Kenneth Cole for suits/clothes. I just bought my first pair of shoes from a company called TOMS. For every pair sold, they give a pair to a child in need in different areas around the world, so I’m sure I’ll continue to wear their shoes!

Aside from golf, what do you prefer for fun and relaxation?

I’ve gotten into photography in the past year or so, and really enjoy going out to different places to take pictures. I’ve been threatening to learn guitar for over a year, so hopefully by writing this I’ll be inspired to start taking lessons.

What’s your take on cuddling?

I’m all for it Nov 1st thru April 30th. Summertime cuddling is a case by case basis in Arizona.

Who would you like to have with you on a deserted island?

MacGyver. He’d figure out ways to build almost anything we needed.

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy foursome? My dad, Bill Gates, and Coach K Mike Krzyzewski

Boxers or briefs? Briefs What is the last book you read?

Cinderella Man

Who is your favorite comedian?

Chris Rock, his bit about

Robitussin is classic!

What is your favorite course to play?

Whistling Straits

What was your best golf shot ever?

A right handed (I’m a lefty) shot with my club flipped over avoiding a tree and an out of bounds boundary fence in a big qualifying tournament. Don’t ask me how I got there in the first place! 12

Where did you grow up?

cart header girl

I grew up in La Pine, which is a small town near Bend, Oregon. I also lived in Portland, Oregon for 10 years. I moved to Arizona less than a year ago for the Warm weather and Golf year round.

If you could be any animal, what would it be and why?

I would be some sort of bird……I’ve always wanted to fly. I would people watch all the time and nobody would see me : )

What is your favorite sport to play and to watch?

To playGolf!! I started playing my freshman year of high school and haven’t stopped since. To watch- Football, especially college football. Go Ducks!!

Are there any golfers in your family?

Yes. My Grandpa is an avid golfer and my older sister Kyla and younger brother Josh were also on the golf team in high school.

What do you feel makes this club special?

Stonecreek is very well maintained and reasonably priced. It is a public course and also one of the nicest courses I’ve seen here in Arizona….. Also, there is always a cart girl on the course to serve refreshing beverages : )

What is your favorite part and least favorite part of being a cart girl? My favorite part would be the relaxation I get from

being out there….I love being on the course. It’s always nice to see our members and regulars too! My least favorite part is without a doubt crawling out of bed at 4,5 and 6 in the morning, but once I’m on the course, all is well.

If you weren’t a cart girl what would you be doing?

Well, I’ve been in the food and beverage industry for 9 years and am

currently working at a steakhouse full time as well. One day I would like to get into sales of some sort….maybe medical sales.

What is your most memorable moment working as a cart girl? The tournaments in general….they are so much fun!! People are out there having a great time and I get to share that experience with them.

What is the funniest thing you have ever seen on the golf course? Well, I am an Oregon Ducks fan and the day before

the fiesta bowl this year, there were Kansas State fans everywhere on the course…..One guy was wearing all green and yellow(Oregon’s colors) so I asked if he was a Ducks fan. He said, “no I’m a K-State fan”…..I asked why he was wearing Oregon’s colors. He said he didn’t realize when he got dressed. His hat, shirt and shoes were all yellow and green. Pretty awesome! We bantered back and forth each time we saw each other that day.

What hobbies do you enjoy?

I love game nights….any board game or challenge. I also enjoy reading.

Do you have a favorite comedian?

Dane Cook is pretty funny,

but Kevin Hart is my favorite.

What is your idea of a perfect date?

I’m a country girl, so I love cruising on dirt roads in the middle of the woods, just the two of us. Once the sun goes down we lie on a blanket and look at the stars. Yep, that sounds great!

What else would you like us to know about you?

People that know me would probably agree that I always have a smile on my face. I love to sing and dance around (I do not have a good voice, it’s just fun). Life is too short to not enjoy it!!

Golf Channel's Morning Drive Expands to Seven Days and Unveils New Format, New Co-Hosts, New Set

The list of reasons to wake up to television’s only live morning golf show got longer with today’s announcement that Golf Channel’s popular Morning Drive will re-launch on Feb. 4 with a new format, a new cast of co-hosts, state-ofthe-art studio and an expanded, sevendays-a-week schedule. “If you love golf, Morning Drive has become the way to start your day,” said Mike McCarley, President of Golf Channel. “In just two years, the show has become weekday appointment viewing for those who share a passion for the 16

game and on the few weekends when Morning Drive has aired, Golf Channel has seen a three-fold increase in ratings. This move to seven days a week, with a new set and new additions to the cast, will allow us to engage in a broader range of topics covering all aspects of the game and give viewers a reason to wake up with Morning Drive every day of the week.” NEW AND EXPANDED CO-HOST TEAM: By expanding to seven days each week, the new Morning Drive cast naturally is going to grow. Current Morning

Drive co-hosts Gary Williams, Damon Hack and Holly Sonders will be joined by Golf Channel analyst Charlie Rymer to form the on-air “foursome” typically covering Thursdays through Mondays. Williams, Hack and Sonders have been the regular co-host team of Morning Drive over the past few months and will build upon that camaraderie. Rymer will bring his exuberance for the game to the morning, in addition to his continued work as an analyst for Golf Central. Longtime Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman will be a central figure mid-week on Morning Drive, typically on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Tilghman will continue to be an anchor for Golf Central and a central figure of Golf Channel’s Live From coverage of the biggest events in golf. Matt Ginella comes to Morning Drive after 11 years as the travel editor for Golf Digest magazine. Ginella has garnered a keen sense for what makes a golf course a destination for golfers of all tastes and will be co-host throughout the week. And Lauren Thompson, who has been a regular contributor to the show, now will have a permanent role, providing news updates and reports for midweek shows. Several regular contributors and guest hosts include: • Emmy Award-winning sports broadcaster, Ahmad Rashad, headlines as a new guest host. A former All-Pro wide receiver, college football Hall of Famer and 25-year network veteran with ESPN, ABC, NBC and NBA TV – and a voracious golfer – Rashad will bring a unique perspective. • John Cook is an 11-time PGA TOUR winner and recent champion of the 2013 Mitsubishi Electric Championship on the Champions Tour. The 1993 U.S. Ryder Cup team member will join the show during some of the biggest weeks on the golf calendar. • Hall-of-Famer Annika Sorenstam will continue to make weekly Morning Drive appearances, providing insight into the professional ranks to the amateurs, and sharing her passion on growing the game. • Other Golf Channel analysts and Arizona Golf Central • Volume 3, Issue 1

reporters also will continue to contribute to Morning Drive on a daily basis, both in studio and on location at various tournaments. Golf World’s Tim Rosaforte will continue to appear weekly on the show; analyst Brandel Chamblee will regularly set up that day’s tournament action on weekends; and Golf Channel on NBC’s Jimmy Roberts will be a frequent contributor in support of his new series, In Play with Jimmy Roberts. NEW FORMAT: Since Morning Drive’s debut in January 2011, the show has become appointment viewing for viewers seeking the latest golf news and information, as well as expert analysis and discussion about all things golf. The show’s new format will continue to set the table for what’s new each day in professional golf, while expanding its scope to cover the golfing lifestyle, including how to play, what to play and where to play. Resident Golf Channel experts and show guests will cover such topics as trends in golf equipment, the hottest travel destinations for golf and the latest fashions turning heads on the course. Morning Drive’s daily polls and interaction with the show’s loyal audience will be conducted through social me-

dia, as well as themed weeks exploring unique aspects of golf. Viewers can take Morning Drive with them via a “Best of” highlight podcast hosted by Sonders available online each afternoon and the series’ audio will continue to be streamed live at GolfChannel.com/MorningDrive.

A Country, An Island And A Continent Let’s say you want to go to Australia and have already come to grips with the 18 hour plus fight you will need to take. Now you need to figure out what to do there. Being the world’s smallest continent still provides many opportunities for the traveler (the Outback, the Great Barrier Reef, etc). Being the sixth largest country will certainly allow the traveler to see many cultural, historical and aesthetic sites (Sydney, the Rainforest, Aboriginees, etc). And, while you are there, you might as well hop on over to the largest island and see firsthand what you have only heard about in a Bugs Bunny cartoon (Tazmania). With all of that to see and do, and the amount of time it takes to get there, you should plan to stay a while and soak it all in. And when you need a break from being a tourist, make sure you have your tee times set wherever you go. If you start in the State of New South Wales by flying into Melbourne or Sydney, you have some of the best courses in the world to choose from.

Royal Melbourne Volumes have been written on the qualities of the West Course but put 18

simply it’s a combination of the greatest land, greatest design and greatest construction ever seen in this country. Designed by renowned Scottish architect Dr Alister MacKenzie, Royal Melbourne has gained worldwide acclaim as some of his best work, reflected in the fact that the courses is consistently rated amongst the top courses in the world. To MacKenzie, the dramatic undulation of the land, fertile sandy soil and natural rugged appearance, of the land he was provided on which to build Royal Melbourne was nothing less than a gift from the golfing gods. For more information, please visit www.royalmelbourne.com.au.

Victoria Situated in the beachside suburb of Cheltenham, Victoria offers a golfing experience on par with the world’s best. The beautifully landscaped course is designed to challenge both the amateur and professional golfer. It is one of the regions tougher courses, with lightning-fast greens and some of the best bunkering in Australia. The Club has an incredible history in world golf and in 1954, perhaps one of the most remarkable feats in world golf occurred. VGC Club Members, Doug

Royal Melbourne

Bachli and Peter Thomson set the Club on the world stage when Bachli won the British Amateur Championship and Thomson won the first of his five British Open Championships. Both trophies sat side-by-side on the mantelpiece in the Members Bar. In recognition of this feat, and the contribution of these two great members to the game of golf, the Club named a room in their honour – the Bachli Thomson Room. For more information, please visit www.victoriagolf.com.au.

Metropolitan Tucked away quietly in Melbourne’s south-east,The Metropolitan Golf Club is one of the renowned Sandbelt courses and for almost a century has been regarded as one of the finest championship courses in Australia. Metropolitan enjoys a reputation as one of the bestconditioned and most beautiful courses in the country. Pure couch grass fairways with large, fast bent-grass greens that are hand-mown to the edges of the greenside bunkers add greatly to the challenge of the course. In total there are 96 bunkers and almost every hole is flanked by huge stands of Australian native trees, providing sanctuary to many species of native birds. If you are looking for a fun filled vacation for the entire family, look no further than Arizona Grand Resort in Phoenix. The resort is located at the base of the Phoenix South Mountain Preserve and is in close proximity to most of the major attractions in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Not that you will need to leave the resort, as everything you could possibly want in a vacation is located at the newly renovated property. There is really no reason to leave Arizona Grand Resort once you have arrived. There is so much fun to be had at the Resort that by the end of the day, you will want to eat at one of the restaurants on site and retire to a Grand Dream Sleeper so that you can get up the next morning and do it all over again. Besides The Lobby Grill, you have choice of one of the better Mexican restaurants in the Valley, Aunt Chiladas Tempe, or opt for Rustler’s Rooste, which serves up great Western themed meals with a fantastic view. One of the major attractions at the resort is the Arizona Grand Golf Course, formerly known as Phantom Horse Golf Club. The golf course also went through a recent redesign. The courses front and back nine are distinctly different from each other. The front nine starts out stadium like and leads you towards the awe inspiring back nine, which winds its way up and into the South Mountain Preserve. One of

20

A Grand Time! the major changes in the golf course was changing what used to be the finishing hole into the opening hole. Rather than having the eighteenth green next to the lobby, the courses first tee box now sits on an island that is overlooked by the new Villas and the new Lobby. The tee box serves as a center gathering area where weddings and special events can be held. The opening hole is a short par four, so it is advisable to tee off with whatever club you are most confident with as you will most likely have a crowd watching your opening tee shot. As you work your way through the front nine, you will discover that Arizona Grand Golf Course does not requires length. In fact, there are very few holes on the course that you will want to hit driver. Course management is a must when playing this golf course. Most of the holes have trouble strategically placed where a well struck drive might land. An example is the first par five on the

course, the 596 yard third hole. The fairway ends at about 250 yards, so your best play on this hole is to hit three wood off of the tee and then lay up on the second shot. The green on the third hole is representative of most of the greens in that is very small and requires a precise approach shot. The back nine at Arizona Grand Resort is one of the more picturesque nines in the Phoenix area. The layout winds its way up into the South Mountain Preserve and back down towards the Resort. Most of the holes on the back nine require precision as the fairways and greens are narrower and smaller than what you would expect from a typical resort course. A great stretch of scenic holes starts at the downhill par five eleventh. The views of the East Valley from the tee box are fantastic. The twelfth hole is a fun little par three over a deep desert wash. Number thirteen, a 538 yard par five, is one of the signature holes on the golf course. A good drive down the left side will give you an opportunity to reach the small green in two. However, you will have to hit your approach over a very intimidating trio of “steeple” bunkers. The course offers up some risk/reward par fours towards the end of the round on holes sixteen and seventeen, measuring at 325 and 307 yards respectively. The finishing hole at Arizona Grand Resort is the courses signature hole. It is unique in that you are finishing with a par three and perhaps the most scenic par three in Arizona. The tee box sits high up on the mountain and the view of the Valley is absolutely breathtaking. On a clear day you can see nearly 30 miles in any direction. Once you catch your breath from the view you have to try and hit a green that looks tiny from this height. Other attractions at Arizona Grand Resort include a full service Spa, a very well equipped Athletic Club and the Oasis Waterpark. There are also numerous hiking trails that lead up and into the South Mountain Preserve if you prefer to exercise outside, or to look for some golf balls you may have lost during your round. Arizona Grand Resort truly has something for everyone. The only problem you might have is trying to find the time to experience everything that this Resort has to offer. For more information or reservations you can visit the resort’s website at www.arizonagrandresort. com or call reservations at 1-866-267-1321. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 3, Issue 1

Ask The Mortgage Man

By David Uster Licensed Mortgage Loan Officer

David Uster, Licensed Mortgage Loan Officer with AmeriFirst Financial, Inc. in Scottsdale, Arizona, answers your questions A client recently asked, “Is this really a good time to buy a home or should I wait?” This is a great question and a very hot topic these days. There’s no doubt that Arizona’s home market feels like it’s recovering. The numbers reflect that home values have halted their free-fall, and in many areas values are on the rise. In fact, it’s becoming more common for buyers to compete with other buyers for the same home - something we haven’t seen much of since the mid-2000’s. Currently in Maricopa County, there are nearly 30,000 homes listed for sale, with an average price of just over $163,000 as of Jan. 1, 2013 - up from $134,000 as of Jan. 1, 2012. If you remember back to April, 2008, the average list price in Maricopa County was $219,000. Since home prices have passed the “bottoming out” and are definitely on the rise, now is a great time to buy. So if you’re in the market for a home, it’s important than ever before

that you’re represented by a professional Realtor® who will represent you as a buyers agent. In today’s Arizona home market, many homes are short-sales, bank-owned, or being sold by investors, rather than a traditional homeowner selling their home, so it’s critical that you have a professional looking out for you. Many things have changed in the mortgage world too - and for this reason, it’s also more important than ever to work with a professional licensed loan officer who can help you navigate the new rules and regulations surrounding borrowing money to buy a home. Gone are the No-Doc, NIV, low-FICO, and zero-down mortgage loans. Fundamentally, obtaining a mortgage loan is very much the same, but the many of the rules and regulations have changed. Many of the credit and down-payment requirements have been increased. But, if you have a 720 credit score, 10% or 20% down-payment, and fully documentable income, you’ll probably find

NMLS 228890 / MLO-0921547

AZ BK0013635 AmeriFirst Financial, Inc. 15111 North Pima Road, Suite 110 Scottsdale, Arizona 85260 obtaining a mortgage loan as easy as it was before the financial crisis a few years ago. But don’t fret...many home buyers today can still obtain a mortgage loan with 640 credit score and a 3.5% down-payment - and of course fully documented income. VA buyers can still get 0% down VA loans. The best advice I can offer a prospective client is - before you begin looking for a home, get yourself pre-qualified for a mortgage. Once you’re pre-qualified, your loan officer will provide you or your Realtor® with a PQF (Pre-Qualification Form). The PQF shows a prospective seller that you’ve consulted with a mortgage lender and that you meet the basic requirements to obtain a mortgage. The next best advice I can offer is be prepared to supply documentation, documentation, and documentation. You’ll need income documents such as pay-stubs, W-2’s, and tax returns. If you’re self-employed, that’s ok - just be prepared to supply income documentation - “stated-income” loans are a thing of the past. You’ll also documentation verifying your bank balances, downpayment, gift funds (if applicable), and post-closing assets. Bottom-line... there’s still lots of mortgage money to go around today, you just have to jump through a few more hoops to get it. One final thought…if you’re really serious about homeownership, there’s no reason to wait. Whether it’s your first home, or you’ve got a home to sell, now is a great time to take action. Contact me for a complementary mortgage consultation or pre-qualification anytime at 480.339.1563. Submit your question to duster@amerifirst.us and maybe I’ll respond in an upcoming issue! Mobilizing Golf Performance Are you one of the many frustrated golfers relentlessly on a quest for the perfect swing? Then Golf MTRx may be just what you are looking for. Firmly committed to changing the way golf is taught and learned, Zeroline Golf developed Golf MTRx -- an innovative mobile app that collects precise and personalized biomechanic feedback during a golfer’s swing and provides drills to correct swing flaws. Golfers of all skill levels are constantly striving to improve their swings. Straighter shots, shaped shots, greater distance, improved accuracy – golfers are always looking to make those small corrections that produce better results and lower scores. Golf MTRx provides a simple mechanism for golfers to receive meaningful personalized feedback on their hip mechanics during swings and practice improvement techniques between lessons, making instruction much more efficient and productive. “While golf apps have become much more common recently, only Golf MTRx allows golfers to access specific and personalized bio-mechanic feedback as they refine their swing motion,” said Tom Gibbings, CEO of Zeroline Golf. 26

“Golf MTRx allows golfers to replicate their ideal swing many times over until it becomes habit. If correction is needed, the app will recommend the appropriate drill for each flaw it identifies.” Golf MTRx, now available on the Apple App Store(SM), uses biomechanic analysis focused on the pelvis -- the foundation of a powerful and efficient golf swing -- to identify swing elements that need improvement and prescribe drills customized for the user. Instructors can use the app to better measure swing efficiency and track student improvement. With Golf MTRx, there are no additional products to buy -- golfers can just secure their smart device inside their belt, and the app employs integrated sensors to gather data, explain its meaning and prescribe solutions. Golf MTRx is the only mobile app that uses the integrated iPhone® and iPod touch® sensors to measure pelvis movement during a golf swing and then provide detailed analysis and recommendations for improvement. A fundamental advantage Golf MTRx has over competing technologies is the app recognizes each golfer’s swing is unique and that which works for one golfer will not necessarily work for

another. It allows the golfer to practice until an “ideal” shot, as determined by the player and the teaching pro, is recorded. The data from that ideal swing is saved and used as a baseline that can be compared to subsequent swings. Consistency, specifically the replication of each player’s ideal swing, is the key to improved performance on the golf course and lower scores. Golf MTRx also allows golfers to store data for a variety of different types of shots, such as a high fade, low draw, punch shot, etc., and use those metrics to replicate the ideal swing for each type of shot when practicing. Golf MTRx is a particularly effective tool for golf professionals to maximize instruction by allowing students to record data from practice in-between lessons, upload the data onto social media platforms including Facebook, and receive feedback from their instructor. Swing data can also be emailed to a local teaching professional. Subsequent versions of the app are expected to include a locator feature for golfers to find a local professional who uses Golf MTRx as a teaching tool. Golf MTRx, which sells for $29.99, is now available for iPhone® and iPod touch® devices in the Apple App StoreSM. Additional information about the application can be found at www.zerolinegolf.com. TMI—An Homage to Golf Now that I am all rested from the holidays (NOT), its time to gear up for the annual new year ritualistic activities (get in shape, start taxes, plan vacations, etc). Let’s see what’s on my list. Wait, lets not look at the list. Lets do something else. How about my smart phone—yeah, lets look at my smart phone. I can read some emails and probably not reply to most of them. I can surf the web. I can read the news from around the world. I can Tweet, Facebook IM and see what other social networking circles I should sign up for. Yep, I have lots of things I can do to avoid my list. In fact, that seems to be the problem. There is just too much information out there for me and now I am paralyzed. With all these opportunities at my fingertips, I seem to be overloaded and not able to take advantage of any of them. Just as Sting said

in his song, “Too much information running through my brain”. It makes me want to jump off the information superhighway or incessantly press the escape key. I could literally spend days researching the best new diet or exercise equipment and not once lift more than 5 pounds. I can also surf the web all over the world and never leave my chair. And I will certainly feel so accomplished afterwards?! Actually, I feel exhausted and anxious. This term, ‘information overload’, was originally coined back in the early 70’s and has turned out to be the biggest irritation 34

in my life. I prefer to think of it as ‘data asphyxiation’. The life is literally being sucked out of me one byte at a time. And how does it affect my golf game, you ask? Well, first I have to actually get to my golf game. Before I can do that, I have to wade through the advertising onslaught that tells me what club to buy, what shoes to wear and what ball to play with. Then I have to figure out if I really need lessons to improve my swing or if some gadget out there can do it for me. Of course, there is always the possibility that I need both at the same time! And I just can’t drive to the course and start playing. Of course not. I have to be told which are the best courses, who designed them, what they serve in the clubhouse and whether or not my newly acquired training coach is better than their pro. Lest we forget, there is a myriad of quantitative mathematical information that I am supposed to understand (and follow)—all of which have been calculated for the benefit of me putting on a planar surface! By the time all this takes place, I am a bit on edge (to say the least). I really don’t want to play anymore. I just want to go hide under a rock and breathe deep for a bit. I thought this was supposed to be fun? I can’t imagine that this is what they were hoping for when they first picked up the ‘stick and ball’ back in the 1400’s. But, I am woman and I am strong. I

choose to move forward in life and go out to tee off anyway. I get away from the radio and the phone and the TV and the cars and the people. And then it happens. All that information, all that noise, all that shuffling and frantic pace fades away. It’s just me and the ball. That one little, tiny piece of information. All I have to do is concentrate on the ball—nothing else. I don’t have a care in the world and am starting to feel rejuvenated. Finally, peace is to be found. I love you, golf!

Don’t Play Dirty! Golfers (and manufacturers) spend a lot of time focusing on the right product—the right club, the right ball, the right shoe. But what about some of those annoying nuances of the game? What products are there to cover those aspects? Enter The Mully Towel, developed for just one of those reasons. During an annual golf trek to Myrtle Beach, three brothers were tired of keeping up, carrying, and leaving behind large golf towels in their carts or dropping them on the wet turf. So, in a moment of genius, they attached a perfectly sized towel to a modified retractable cord and clipped it onto a belt. A star is born! “Still today our concept and vision remain the same”, said Matt Mullen, VP of Sales . “The Mully is simply one of the most practical towels on the market. Why carry your large towel everywhere you go? We’re not replacing your bag towel, just complementing it. Most pocket towels are designed to specifically clean balls and are easily lost or left behind on the cart, besides, have you ever put a wet towel in your pocket? The outcome is never good! With The Mully, you always have a towel handy when you need one and it’s the perfect size for cleaning all your equipment or just wiping your hands off.” If you love golf, don’t play dirty. With The Mully, your golf towel is always right where you need it, when you need it. It’s the perfect gift for every golfer you know. Plus teams and organizations can customize their Mully with an embroidered logo, making the ideal product for golf courses and corporate giveaways. The Mully Towel is so innovative and useful, they have branched out to other sport demographics. Darrin Hein, Director of the Fishing Towel Division adds, “Our success continues to be based on three guiding principles; deliver the highest of quality products to the market, keep razor sharp focus on what our customers are asking for and evolve the product line accordingly and support our distributors in every way possible. We did all three at the PGA Merchandising show with the release of our multiple color-line and the 36

upcoming release of both of our new fishing towels”. During the PGA show, The Mully Towel debuted some new colors (black, green, royal and red) as well as a new manufacturing stamp, Made in the USA. “We are very excited about this”, said Jeff Mullen, President and Founder of MS Towels. “In a struggling economy, were proud to put Made in America on our products, something a majority of US companies today cannot claim. It’s time to make a change, and people want Made in the USA products.” Sometimes you run across a new product that’s so practical it just makes sense. The patent pending retractable towel is not only unique, it does what it says it will do. No more searching for your towel to clean or dry your hands. No more worries--its always with you. As their website says, Just Clip it, Grip it, Use it and Release it. For more information, please visit, www.themullytowels.com.

Merchandise Show Each year, the PGA Merchandise Show delivers new and innovative golf products. Manufacturers, buyers and golf media all gather in Orlando. A decade ago, a group of companies spearheaded by club manufacturer Tour Edge staged an extraordinary media event, where manufacturers and media could interact for an entire day. It’s a great opportunity for everyone involved and has become tradition. Here are some of the products you’ll see and read about in the coming year. Tour Edge Exotics XCG6 fairway woods feature a titanium cup face, which is combo-brazed to a heavier high-density steel sole for incredible power and feel, even on off-center hits. Brazing is a high-tech process that bonds the parts together inside a vacuum without welding and is superior to other combining methods. Trackman robotic tests confirm the XCG6 is longer than other popular fairway woods. With a smaller head, the tour-inspired CB5 offers the workability and feel preferred by better players.

Polara Golf Balls

The club’s no-weld design combo-brazes a beta-titanium cupped face with a heavier hyper steel body. The result, every single gram of excess weight is eliminated from the face and shifted to the rear skirt and sole for a deeper center of gravity. The deep, high center of gravity gives the CB5 an explosive, penetrating launch angle. Tour Edge is also introducing their first adjustable-hosel driver, allowing for four face angle and loft settings to optimize Sky Caddie SGXw launch characteristics. This new club features an advanced multi-level forged titanium face that maximizes feel and rebound. Included in the sole of the driver are four hexahedron weight pads that increase the head’s MOI for greater stability and longer distance on off-center hits. www.touredge.com With its new wireless capabilities, the SkySwing Jacket Caddie SGXw provides the convenience of on the go access to the most accurate and upto-date course maps, eliminating inaccuracy issues so common with preloaded courses in other rangefinders. It delivers game changing, stroke saving features,

including Dynamic RangeVue, designed for smarter and easier club selection. RangeVue's preset yardage arcs adjust dynamically over fairway landing areas and greens to allow golfers to quickly select the best club for every shot. PinPoint Technology allows golfers to measure to the hole by adding daily pin positions. Combined with its IntelliGreen feature, golfers have yardages they need to the front carry, back, center and hole locations automatically, from any angle of approach. The powerful combination of PinPoint and Intelligreen will help golfers avoid greenside bunkers, hit more greens and sink more birdie putts. www.Skygolf.com For those who just want a more enjoyable round of golf, the Polara ball is the perfect solution. A revolutionary, asymmetrical dimple pattern reduces hooks and slices up to 75%. Shallow dimples are positioned around the ball’s equator with deeper dimples at the poles. Anyone with a slice will undoubtedly experience the self-correcting effect. Polara

Storm Tight balls are designed for the vast majority of recreational golfers who want to take advantage of technology improvements. During robotic testing where a significant slice was induced, on average, Polara balls reduced the slicing effect by 75% over traditional balls, including premium brands. Golf Labs director Gene Parente states, “We set up the Golf Labs robot to simulate a 90 foot slice based on

GolferAid

launch conditions of an average golfer. With the nonconforming Polara Ultimate Straight golf ball we found that compared to several popular conforming golf balls, which all sliced about 90 feet, the Arizona Golf Central • Volume 3, Issue 1

Polara ball corrected up to 70 feet of the 90 foot slice.” www.polaragolf.com The Swing Jacket is the only product that physically guides a golfer through the optimal swinging motion. Whether you use the Swing Jacket hitting whiffle balls in the back yard, taking practice swings in the living room or on the practice tee, each swing is automatically training your body to repeat a connected, one plane swing; locking key swing fundamentals into your muscle memory. It automatically keeps your swing on plane, puts your club on the optimal swing path and encourages proper torso rotation to harness core power. www.SwingJacket.com Sun Mountain’s StormTight rain gear offers guaranteed waterproof protection using a four-way stretch woven fabric that shields against wind and rain while remaining breathable. It's available in a full-zip jacket and pants as well as a long-sleeve pullover. This shell is bonded to a waterproof/breathable membrane and advanced water repellant finish causes water to bead up and roll off. Additional features include: expansion panels at the shoulders to allow an unrestricted swing, waterproof zippers, adjustable hem and cuffs and passthrough hand warmer pockets on the pants. www.sunmountain.com LifeAID Beverage launches GolferAID, an innovative entry in the functional beverage category. The Ultimate Swing Teacher I have been a golf writer for 40 years, and I can tell you that golf writers are a very skeptical lot. As a general rule we’ve seen and tried it all, and by and large we are rarely blown away with the performance of most of the golf products that cross our desk. At the re-launch of the Swing Jacket training aid during PGA Show Week in Orlando, I actually had one of those rare experiences. I stood on the range at Alaqua Lakes and watched one media person after the other put on the Swing Jacket, hit a few balls, and exclaim their surprise and delight in the instant results. ‘This is amazing,” was the general claim after hitting a handful of shots. “I can feel a difference, and it happened so fast.” Most golfers never actually learn how to release the club because they’re slapping at it with their arms and hands. This product will allow all of those

millions of golfers to feel the correct swing and then repeat it consistently. When it originally launched over a decade ago, the Swing Jacket became an instant success as a golf swing trainer, a rarity in the golf industry. Unlike competing products the patented Swing Jacket automatically trained golfers to repeat the core fundamentals of a simple, repeatable, efficient swing. Developing an effective swing was no longer such a daunting challenge. In 2007, however, the Swing Jacket went up in smoke. Literally. The company’s factory burned down, along with all the dyes, molds and product. It was a complete loss. Most people would have buried the company in the ashes of that fire. But Bill Walsh isn’t most people. After some time of mourning, Walsh regrouped, organized new financial backing, recre40

ated the product, and brought Swing Jacket back to life – better than ever. The new product was officially launched at the Tour Edge Media Classic in January during PGA Merchandise Show week. And it was met with rave reviews. “The Swing Jacket is a very well thought out and constructed training aid that I find works equally well with full swings, chip shots and wedges,” said freelance golf equipment writer Ed Travis. Walsh is pleased that the long road back is now official. “I believe we had just scratched the surface with Swing Jacket before the fire,” said Walsh, based in Calgary, Canada. “The product can really serve as a player developmental tool for the golf industry, because it makes learning the proper golf swing very simple. One of golf’s issues is that people walk away from the game because they find it just too difficult to learn. Swing Jacket addresses the issue head-on.” The Swing Jacket is the only product that physically guides golfers through a connected, on-plane swing. Whether you use the Swing Jacket hitting whiffle balls in the back yard, taking practice swings in the living room or on the practice tee, each swing is automatically training your body to repeat that optimal swinging motion. By imposing a level of consistency on each swing, the Swing Jacket locks key swing fundamentals into muscle memory quickly and easily. “The product had developed such a strong reputation of delivering great results that after we ran out of inventory, used Swing Jackets were selling on E-bay for up to 1.5 times our $120 price,” said Walsh. “I was getting phone calls and e-mails every day from people looking to buy the product. Now that we’re back on the market with an even better product, demand has been really strong.” The Swing Jacket wasn’t just an afterthought when it reached the marketplace. “We spent 2.5 years and almost $1M to bring the product to market,” said Walsh. “We retained the world renowned

Human Performance Laboratory to help us understand the bio-mechanics of the optimal swinging motion and then distill that motion down to the core fundamentals that characterize it. “We tested 52 prototypes on hundreds of golfers before we arrived at the design we sell today. Used properly it will absolutely help any golfer. We’ve sold over 100,000 units in 54 countries ranging from PGA Tour players who use it to refine their motion to the raw beginners who want to develop sound fundamentals right out of the gate. “Golfers know that to improve your golf game you need to practice. But for a lot of players the normal trial and error methods can be pretty discouraging. The Human Performance Laboratory taught us that athletes can actually accelerate the pace of learning by practicing under optimal conditions:

1. Practice perfect: The simplest, most efficient motion is always the best

2. Consistency: The more consistent each rep the faster you’ll learn it

3. Real conditions: Practice in gamelike circumstances (hitting full shots with your own equipment)

4. Focus on the feel not on your mechanics” The Swing Jacket was designed to create those optimal conditions whenever it is used. And that’s why people like the media members mentioned earlier had such dramatic results so quickly. To learn more about Swing Jacket, visit www.swingjacket.com. History of the PGA Merchandise Show

Now The PGA Merchandise Show, now the world’s largest and most influential golf business event, grew from humble beginnings in Dunedin, Fla., in 1954, when a handful of golf merchandisers assembled in the PGA National Golf Club parking lot during a series of PGA winter tournaments. By 1957, the number of manufacturers’ representatives had become so large, approximately 50 by then, that PGA officials leased a tent. The PGA Merchandise Show moved when The PGA of America’s winter tournaments relocated to Florida’s East Coast. In 1963, the Show was held at the Port St. Lucie (Fla.) Country Club; from 1964–73 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (now known as BallenIsles Country Club); and in 1974, moved back to Port St. Lucie, still under a circussized tent. The PGA Merchandise Show and winter tournaments moved to Orlando, Fla., in 1975, where the show was indoors for the first time. In 1982, The PGA of America relocated to the new PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, a mile from its former headquarters. The PGA Merchandise Show was subsequently moved to the Miami Beach Convention Center, where it remained for three years. Due to the continuing demand for increased space capacity, The PGA moved the Show to the new Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) in 1985 and again the Show was quickly filled to capacity. As the PGA Merchandise Show grew so did the West Building of the 42

Then Convention Center, which added 200,000 gross square feet in 1989 and nearly doubled in size to 1.1 million gross square feet in 1996. In 1998, The PGA of America sold an equity share of its golf shows to Reed Exhibitions, the world's leading trade show organizer. In partnership, The PGA and Reed, under the umbrella of PGA Worldwide Golf Exhibitions, produce and manage the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando and the PGA Expo in Las Vegas. Since the PGA/Reed partnership, the PGA Merchandise Show has evolved to become an all-encompassing global platform for the introduction of new products, indoor & outdoor product testing, wide-ranging education seminars, industry symposiums right on the show floor, national awards presentations, fashion features, player development programs, professional networking events and more. Several industry programs have been

added to the PGA Show since the partnership that remain valuable resources for the industry today including vendor and buyer appreciation programs (1999), the New Product Zone (2001), Outdoor Demo Day and the Show floor’s 19th Hole (2003), PGA Awards Night, Pro-Pro Tournament Series and Indoor Demo Days at the Equipment Test Center (2004), specialty exhibitor pavilions, the Play Golf America Conference and PGA Teaching Best Practices (2006), the PGA Forum and PGA Short Game Testing Center (2007), PGA Mentor Lunch and PGA/ AGM Product Preview & Reception (2008), attendee savings SuperPass (2010), PGA Teaching & Coaching Summit added to early Show Week and the Inventor’s Spotlight Pavilion on the Show floor (2011). In 2013, the PGA Merchandise Show will offer an all-new PGA Education Program including Outdoor Instructional Workshops, a Fast Track Program and a realigned PGA Education Conference. Also, a new FIT to W.I.N. exhibitor pavilion focusing on healthy attributes of golf sponsored by the Titleist Performance Institute and a Fashion Showcase & Networking Lounge in the Apparel Hall will make a first appearance for the 60th Anniversary event. More than 42,000 PGA Professionals, golf retailers and industry executives from some 80 countries and all 50 U.S. states came to the 59th PGA Merchandise Show to launch the business of golf for 2012. Product presentations by golf’s top market leaders combined with indoor and outdoor Demo Days, multiple designer fashion shows, teaching clinics, education seminars, career workshops, industry awards, networking receptions and more. Now more than ever before, the PGA Merchandise Show is the ideal, global platform that industry leaders, top manufacturers, PGA Professionals and golf organizations utilize to grow the business, participation and interest in golf. Ultimate Turf fertilizer proves to be the magic potion for golf courses and ballparks across the country When Notre Dame and Alabama did battle for the college football championship in early January, did you notice how incredible the field looked? Alan Sigwardt is the Senior Director of Grounds at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium, which hosted that game. This year he began using a fertilizer product that many golf course superintendents around the country have already discovered. It’s Ultimate Turf, an amazing specialty fertilizer from Solutions 4Earth. “I have been doing this for quite a while and I can say without hesitation that Ultimate Turf is fantastic,” said Sigwardt. “The biggest names in the country are using Ultimate Turf. They can buy any product they want, any time they want. So if they are using it, you don’t need to know a whole lot more.” This new specialty fertilizer product has received rave reviews from golf course superintendents and groundskeepers of some of the most famous sports stadiums in the country. “Since we started using the product, we have had the biggest improvement we’ve seen is in the root zone,” said Kevin Templin, Head Superintendent at highly ranked Cascata Golf Club in Las Vegas. “We have seen a noticeable decline in the number of hot spots we

46

have. And it definitely helped with the color because we were able to get more product out and take less time doing it.” Pro Turf International, parent company of Solutions 4Earth, has been utilizing Ultimate Turf in all of its golf course maintenance projects at some of the best golf courses in the southwest. The results have been positive. “We have noticed a huge upgrade in our turf in every instance,” said Kip Wolfe of PTI. “Root mass is key for golf course turf, and nothing we have used in the past has done the job nearly as well as Ultimate Turf.” You won’t get an argument from Bill Findley, Head Groundskeeper for the St. Louis Cardinals for the past 17 years. He learned about Ultimate Turf at baseball’s winter meetings last year, and liked what he heard. He applied Ultimate Turf in the spring, prior to opening day. “The only thing we did differently in our maintenance program this year was using Ultimate Turf, and we’ve never had results like this,” he said. “This is far and away the best root mass we have ever had, and it is a good thing we did. We endured the hottest summer on record in St. Louis, yet we had the best durability we’ve ever had.” “If I hadn’t used this product, we would have never made it through all those hot summer nights. It blew me away. I am a huge believer in Ultimate Turf.” Certain areas of the country provide special challenges for golf course superintendents, like the summer heat of Florida and the cold winters of the northeast and midwest. Superintendents who have utilized Ultimate Turf in these areas have seen a dramatic improvement. “I have been using Ultimate Turf since the fall of 2009, and it has become an integral part of our spring and fall fertility program,” said Kyle Hegland, Golf Course Superintendent at Sand Hills Golf Club in North

Dakota. “Winter is our biggest challenge as we receive little to no snow cover, with extreme winds and multiple freeze and thaw cycles. That’s a harsh environment for any plant. Ultimate Turf has dramatically helped our root development, which in turn gets us through winter with little or no turf damage. I would recommend Ultimate Turf to anyone looking to improve their fertility efficiency and efficacy.” Besides the enhanced root mass, Ultimate Turf offers another benefit. “Ultimate Turf aids in nutrient availability due to its’ low pH solution,” said Jeremie Smith, Director of Sports Turf for Solutions 4Earth. “When blended with other products, it gives the turf manager an option to reduce fertility inputs.” Jared Bumpus, Golf Course Superintendent at Rio Secco Golf Club in Las Vegas, has already reaped that benefit. “Not only is it a good fertilizer, but if we use it in conjunction with other fertilizers we’re getting a lot more bang for our buck,” said Bumpus. “We are getting a lot more vigor out of the grass, the color is better, our salts are lower and it is just an easier product to maintain.” Maybe the most important result of using Ultimate Turf can be found in the bottom line. “Our liquid fertilizer fees were cut by 40 percent this year, yet we still achieved the same color and results without spending as much money. Pretty amazing,” said Clay Wood, Head Groundskeeper since 1995 at Oakland’s Overstock.Com Coliseum, home of the baseball A’s, the NFL Raiders and dozens of other events during the year. Bumpus of Rio Secco Golf Club agrees. “Instead of doing two or three applications we are doing one application and getting the same results,” said Bumpus. “We’ve seen no black tracking, no streaking of the grass. Ultimate Turf is really a good product for us.” To learn more about Ultimate Turf, visit www.solutions4earth.com. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 3, Issue 1

for your health

Champion's Choice: Coconut Oil Coconut oil is a unique metabolism boosting fat that can help shed pounds off your body and strokes off your scorecard! A favorite among athletes, this nutrient-dense, saturated fat also supports the immune system, and reduces aging. With coconut oil included in your daily diet, you’ll be able to take your game, and your health, to the next level!

Four Big Fat Facts 1. Boosts Metabolism Reap the benefits of coconuts oil’s thermic effect as your Camilo Villegas like muscles intimidate the competition with a deep drive straight down the middle of the fairway! Similar to lean protein, the medium-chain fats in coconuts actually increase metabolism to support muscle mass and aid fat loss. 2. Nutrient Dense Stay strong and maximize course management skills with some nourishing pre- round coconut oil to fuel your body and brain. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, capric acid, manganese, molybdenum, and copper, while also containing adequate calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, potassium and vitamins B, C and E. 3. Supports Immunity Now you’re “sick days” can be spent on the course instead of the couch! Rich in lauric acid, coconut oil has antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties that strengthen the immune system, keeping you eligible for the course record all year long! 4. Reduces Aging Shooting your age is easier with coconut oil! Although most people think of extra virgin olive oil as a good oil for cooking, coconut would be a much healthier choice. Unlike olive oil, coconut oil has a high heat point, making it much less susceptible to harmful oxidation that can advance aging and promote cancer.

Sample Day to Go Coconuts! Breakfast: 3 eggs, spinach & red pepper (cooked in coconut oil) Lunch: lettuce-wrapped burger (cooked in coconut oil), avocado & tomatoes Snack: chocolate protein shake with coconut oil & strawberries Dinner: wild salmon, asparagus, mushrooms & red potatoes (cooked in coconut oil) Select: unrefined, organic, virgin coconut oil with no other ingredients listed. Avoid: refined, hydrogenated, non-organic, bleached or deodorized. Storage: room temperature for up to 2 years

Twin Time

AZ Golf Central Magazine loves a young gun and this time we got two—twins Alec and Brenden Bone! They are in their senior year at Boulder Creek High School in Anthem and both will be playing college golf. Alec has signed with Colorado State University while Brenden will be attending the Air Force Academy. Read along to get to know these great kids.

Alec Bone The JGAA has been a big part of my development in competitive golf. I think the world of all of their staff and they think the world of me, not only as a golfer but as an individual. I Alec Bone

received the sportsmanship award for 2012. When I started playing golf it was always 3rd behind Baseball and Soccer, sports I’ve been playing since I was 5 years old. My 5’9, 145 figure was not helping me onto the varsity baseball team; however, I did play varsity soccer as a freshman and enjoyed a lot of my teammates. As junior year approached I decided that those two sports were not going to take me anywhere so I pursued golf and never looked back, 36 holes per day in the summer and a large amount of balls on the range got me to the point where I am today.

What is your favorite tournament on the PGA tour? My favorite tournament on the PGA tour would be the U.S. Open because it thins out to the herd to the golfers that can play a challenging golf course

When did you start the game of golf?

What are your future ambitions in the game of golf? I hope to play the game

I began playing competitively when I was thirteen years old, before that, we were taken out to play on vacation and to hit balls on occasion.

instructor of mine, Nigel Spence. He previously played on the European tour and is the most honest person I’ve ever met, and he’s the kind of guy I would like to be like when I grow older.

Who is your favorite PGA tour professional? My favorite PGA tour professional is Tiger Woods, his health and work ethic is unmatched by any other professional on the tour.

If you could pick any foursome to be a part of, who would be the other three? The three players that would complete 50

my foursome would be my past instructor Nigel Spence, the number one player in the world Rory McIlroy, and my twin brother Brenden Bone. We’ve been playing with each other since the start and probably won’t stop playing together.

Do you currently play on a school golf team? I have just finished my senior season with Boulder Creek High School, with a tournament average of 70.

What is your most memorable moment in golf? My most memorable moment Arizona Golf Central • Volume 3, Issue 1

in golf was when I birdied 4 of the last 5 holes at Aguila Golf Course to shoot 63 and tie the competitive course record--recording 10 birdies and a bogey on the day.

What is the most favorite club in your bag and what clubs do you use? My favorite club in the bag when competing would be my driver, which is a Mizuno MP-630 Fast Track , my 3-wood is a 13* Taylormade R9 TP, Hybrid- 20* Ping i20, Irons- Taylormade TP MB Smoke, Wedges- 58*, 52*, & 48* Titleist Vokey SM4, Putter 1- Titleist Scotty Cameron Newport 2 34”, Putter 2- Taylormade Rossa Monza Corza 43”.

Brenden Bone I started playing competitive golf when I moved to Arizona. The JGAA has several local tournaments though out the year. After my first golf tournament in JGAA, I was hooked; the urgency and nervousness I felt was a feeling that was unmatched by any other sport that I have ever played. I have played well over 30 JGAA events and I value every experience that I’ve had throughout the last five years. I feel very proud to have come from playing junior golf in Arizona and I hope to continue to play well in the next 6 months. I owe much of my golf experiences to the JGAA and all that they have done to put on and run large local tournaments though out the valley Brenden Bone

Brenden & Alec BoneBone

When did you start the game of golf? I played a few 9-hole tournaments when I was younger, but I started playing more competitively when I turned 13 and moved to Arizona

How old are you and does anyone else in your family play golf? I turn 18 on December 20th. My twin brother Alec, my father and I like to get out and play together a few rounds a year. My brother and I play almost every day, so getting my dad out is a lot of fun

Who is your favorite PGA tour professional? My favorite PGA pro is Rory Mcilroy. I remember watching his first ever professional win at the Dubai Desert Classic in 2009 on the European Tour. From then on, I have been a huge fan of the way he carries himself on the golf course.

If you could pick any foursome to be a part of, who would be the other three? It would have to be my twin brother Alec, Bubba Watson, and Rickie Fowler. I think that it would be a very laid back round of golf and would be a lot of fun.

What is your favorite tournament on the PGA tour? My favorite tournament to watch is probably the Open Championship because it is authentic, old school golf. I believe that it challenges the players in ways that no other major does.

What are your future ambitions in the game of golf? I wish to become the best golf that i can be, if it takes me into a career, great, but if not I’ll be happy knowing that worked hard and fun throughout my whole golf career. Arizona Golf Central • Volume 3, Issue 1

Who are your mentors or role models and why? Throughout the years I have valued my golf coaches the most. My first instructor, KC Anderson, who I still call my best coach to date, helped with engraining good habits as a young golfer. Similarly, my current golf coach, Gary Wolf and I have worked very hard all summer on returning to the fundamentals of golf and it has helped me significantly. Both of these people have meant a lot to me and have helped me grow on and off the course not just as a golfer but as a young adult.

Do you currently play on a school golf team? I played for Boulder Creek High School, and had lettered all four years. I’ve had great coaches, Jay Kopas and Nigel Spence, that helped me on and off the course. Next year I will be attending The United States Air Force Academy to play golf as a Falcon.

What is your most memorable moment in golf? My most memorable golf moment was in the fall of this year when I won my first stroke play event. I won the Antigua High School National Invitational by 2 shots after my brother held the lead after the first day. I shot a final round 67, which is still my lowest round to date.

What is the most favorite club in your bag and what clubs do you use? My favorite club in the bag is my 60 degree wedge; I love to hit those fun flop shots and bunker shots, they always keep me entertained. I hit a Taylormade R11 TP Driver 9.5*, a 14* Taylormade R11 TP 3 wood, a Ping i20 20* hybrid, Mizuno MP-63 irons, 50*,54*, and 60* Vokey SM4 Wedges and most importantly a Scotty Cameron Putter. 51

your pro knows

Power Clinic

Photos by Greg Dunivant

Nothing grabs your attention like the word ‘power’. In this series of break out tips, I’ll show you 3 no nonsense secrets guaranteed to help you absolutely kill it. Enough with the introduction, it’s time to get the lead out. Stand up, get loose and find some room to swing. Class is in session! 1. Play Keep Away If you want to really power your drives, then you need to develop a wide arc in your backswing. I like to think of it as playing “keep-away.” What do I mean? Well, in this case, I’m trying to keep the shaft far away from my right shoulder into the top of my backswing, versus having my arms and shaft folded or collapsed in close. Creating a wide arc that effectively stretches the muscles of your torso will help you create a return path to the ball that maximizes both speed and power.

2. Pounce Into Action Once you’re wound up with a massive arc, it’s time to “Pounce Into Action.” Start your downswing with a strong move from the ground up, really putting pressure into the turf by increasing weight on your front foot. I like to feel as if my left knee is actually increasing in bend as my chest stays attacking down towards the turf. An efficient transition that begins from the ground up will properly transfer energy from the legs, to the torso, followed by the arms and then finally to the club head for maximum “Swat” at impact.

3. Belly Blast As you drive into the hit, give your shot a final “Belly Blast” as you bust into the finish. Here I’m referring to driving the hips forward so that the belt line/ midsection pushes strong to the finish line. Hold the end of your swing and take note of your posture. Your chest should be out, with shoulders back and hips thrust forward in full extension. A total “Hero Shot” as you bask in the glory of a monstrous hit! 52

The book, written for general audiences as well as golfers, reached bookshelves in December. Ryan focuses on Munch Malone, a seriously inept golfer on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, who, at seventy years old, has a very high handicap that draws some unlikely attention from the afterlife. From on high, two scratch golfers---both quite deceased---have been scouring Earth on a quest to find the right golfer. If they are ever to again play their beloved game, they need a serious hacker for a grand experiment from the Great Beyond. And then they find Munch. Mission accomplished, they settle back into their easy chairs in the great clubhouse in the sky, drinks in hand, to watch as their experiment plays itself out down on terra-firma on high-definition television. ➎ Bobby Clampett's Impact Zone Golf® Instruction The IMPACT ZONE™ Training System by Impact Zone Golf, the innovative approach to golf instruction created by acclaimed PGA Tour winner and popular television golf analyst Bobby Clampett, has been released in a specially packaged set of four DVDs. This transformational method of learning and teaching golf – which has flourished around the success of Clampett’s book, “The Impact Zone” – is priced at $89 per set at www.impactzonegolf. com. “The IMPACT ZONE Training System” completely changes the way golfers and instructors perceive and interpret each golfer’s swing. Clampett challenges the widely accepted theory of golf instruction that is too concerned with a golfer’s swing style, while overlooking its results and effectiveness. Impact-Based™ instruction puts the emphasis where it should be, Clampett professes: on consistently good shots and lower scores. For more details about The IMPACT ZONE Training System and to order the set of four DVDs or online downloadable product, visit www.impactzonegolf.com, call 1-877-243-8718, or email info@impactzonegolf.com.

Their passion for living is reflected in their impeccable fashion sense, iconic art & architecture and delectable cuisine. When it comes to cooking, Italians have an incredible knack for blending the finest ingredients to create icons of gastronomy. A perfect example is Tiramisu, a dessert developed years ago in Treviso, Italy. The combination of ladyfingers soaked in espresso, mascarpone cream and cocoa powder was deliciously tempting and the recipe quickly spread to the United States where its popularity exploded. For fans of this remarkable dessert, they can now try Tiramisu Italian liqueur. It is a liqueur that tastes every bit as delicious as its namesake dessert, because it is crafted using quality decadent ingredients. Tiramisu Italian Liqueur is Imported from Sommacampagna, Italy and reminiscent of the decadent Italian dessert.
