We got this party started! Celebrating our 14th anniversary at Errol Estate Golf & Country Club the same week we all celebrated Tiger’s win at Bay Hill! Wooo-hooo! Many thanks to our wonderful hosts at Errol Estate. The shrimp and filet appetizers were to die for and our guests enjoyed an assortment of fine wines and generously poured adult beverages. Some spent the day on the links and got to enjoy the full “Errol Estate Experience.” Patrick Daoust, the new owner and President, has done an amazing turnaround of the golf course & country club in just 15 months. The 18 hole Joe Lee design is in beautiful condition and if you haven’t played the course recently it really is a treat. The Highlands and Lake nines provide a combination of hills, dramatic vistas, mature trees and lakes offering one of the most unique & interesting golf experiences in Florida. In addition, Errol is now the US home of the Lee Westwood Golf School – a world-class practice facility with access to the most advanced golf performance technology that can take your game to the next level. Thanks to our select group of friends who came from all over to celebrate! Elisa Gaudet assisted with the party plans and was on hand autographing her very cool book Two Good Rounds. Global golf course architect, Ron Garl, flew in from his latest project in Columbia. Jay Golden, golf course entertainer and PGA teaching professional extraordinaire, kept everyone laughing as always. Miss Florida 2006, Allison Kreiger-Walsh, brought some additional class to the crowd along with Holly G President of Golf Marketing Services and real estate investment guru Chris Karamitsos from Marcus & Millichap. Not to mention, our next golf bachelor, Darren Decarlo, PGA professional and president of the Perfect Club Golf Collection. Our own, Rick Harris, Director of the Senior Amateur Golfers Association (SAGA) summed it up best “Errol is a gem. You will be pleasantly impressed by the outstanding service and attention provided by the management, golf pro, staff and restaurant when you book your next outing or social function!” Last but never least, I am blessed to have an amazing staff and team of writers that make this magical magazine a joy to publish all these years. I love the golf industry and all the many charitable causes it supports and we do too!! Happy Birthday FGCM and 2009 North Florida PGA Amateur of the Year many more good rounds!!

FL Restaurant & Lodging Assoc. header
The golf course at Capital City Country Club is nestled in the beautiful hills of Tallahassee, covered in tall pines and large moss-draped oaks. A member of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, the Club offers a unique space due to its rolling course with elevation changes more commonly found in the Northeastern United States. The course begins with an elevated tee shot that must be carefully positioned in the left side of the first fairway. From this location the green is accessible, even from the back right hole location that is hidden behind a large cavernous bunker. The first four holes of the course are difficult but the middle holes offer chances to recover, and the front nine ends with an uphill par five that can save your round. The back nine begins with a narrow tee shot that must be positioned at the top of the hill in order to leave a full view of the 10th green. The green is flat, and a birdie is possible provided that you reach the fairway from the tee. The signature hole on the back nine is the 17th. The fairway drops down and a small pond protects the front of this
10
par four. Newly planted pine trees at the dogleg make the tee shot difficult, and the second shot must be hit the correct yardage to this narrow green. The course concludes with a long par five back to the clubhouse. Make sure the second shot here is down the left side. A huge oak tree gobbles up golf balls and protects the right side of the green. Located in the historic Capitol City, the Club has a fascinating history. In 1908, the Tallahassee Country Club was organized with an initiation fee of $1.00 and dues of $1.00 per year. The Club consisted of a small golf course and tennis courts on the grounds of the home of Mrs. Reinette Hunt, known as The Grove, at the north end of Adams Street. After a few years, a rudimentary golf course consisting of a few holes with sand greens was built on the site of the present eighteen hole course of the Capital City Country Club. In 1924, the Tallahassee Country Club was incorporated, and purchased the golf course property from George Perkins. Fred C. Elliott, chief engineer of the Internal Improvement Fund, was in charge of laying out the original few holes on the Perkins property. In the early years, a small wooden building near the first hole (which is now the present thirteenth tee) served as a golf shop. Before the end of the twenties, the course had been enlarged to nine (9) holes and a new clubhouse was constructed on the north side of the present thirteenth hole. The Tallahassee Country Club remained under private ownership until August 1935, when the Club gave the property to the City of Tallahassee, with the provision that the course would revert back to the original members of the Tallahassee Country Club should the City become unable continue to maintain it. The City expanded the course to the regulation 18-hole layout designed by A. W. Tillinghast. For a little more than twenty years, the course was operated as a municipal facility. Golf tournaments were also held at the Club and sponsored by the Tallahassee Men’s Golf Association and the Tallahassee Women’s Golf Association. In February 1956, the City, faced with deficits in its operation of the golf course and the need for capital
improvements of the clubhouse, leased back to the Club for 99 years most of the property it had received as a gift two decades earlier. The clubhouse burned in 1958, shortly after the completion of the new masonry clubhouse on the west side of the course. In 1989, the downstairs area was improved, updating the 19th Hole Grille and expanding the grille’s dining room and men’s card room. A new Golf Pro Shop was built adjacent to the clubhouse at the same time. Begun in January 1999 and completed in July 2000, the entire interior of the clubhouse, both the main level and downstairs, underwent extensive renovations. The 19th Hole Grille & Dining Room, Men’s Locker Room & Lounge, Women’s Locker Room & Lounge, and the staff offices were completely renovated and updated. A covered, open-air veranda, complete with ceiling fans and pipedin music, was created outside the 19th Hole. It provides members with a pleasant space to relax and enjoy the breathtaking view of the putting green, driving range, Tee #1 and the swimming pool. golf travel This year the Boston Globe Travel Show, a February mainstay providing escape from great white North featured a Craft Beer Pavilion filled with brewers from the Northeast. Along side those brewers was a Ponte Vedra Beach Florida company invited to the show specifically for their beer-centric travel packages. The Boston media loved Play Harder Tours and their travel concept saying this was one of the best ideas to come from the travel show in years! Play Harder Tours offers beer-centric travel (beer is a major focal point of their events) which usually couples beer, great food, music and some type of sporting event. Destinations include Jacksonville, Tampa, Savannah, New Orleans & Las Vegas with a European trip to Amsterdam & Bruges planned for the Fall of 2013. The cornerstone of every trip is the beer, with the American Craft Beer scene growing by leaps and bounds its hard to dispute the popularity of beer in our country.
18
Play Harder Tours America, while still behind Belgium and Germany in per capita beer drinking is closing the gap! The interest in American Craft Beer has spawned an interest in beer travel. With beer aficionados across the country hunting down the new brewery, and the best brew pub with the deepest tap list! Here in Central Florida we are spoiled to be smack in the middle of the brewing resurgence between the two big brewing cities in Florida, Tampa and Jacksonville. What about the connection between golf and beer? The fact of the matter is that golf and beer are intertwined. Golf without beer is unthinkable. I can’t help but imagine some 500 years ago in a rolling green field somewhere in Scotland, a man in a red tartan kilt is hitting a leather covered rock with a
big wooden club when a young lassie in a horse drawn cart pulls along side and says, “Scotsman, what’s under that kilt”? He Replies, “Ahhh me Brew Wench, on a good day your red lip paint”. Both Chuckle and the lassie asks, “Scotsman, can you use a brew”? The banter between the golfer and brew cart girl is born! Play Harder Tours is featuring 2 Golf events in the month of May: The Players Championship Weekend, May 10th – 12th which includes 2 nights hotel, welcome dinner, Saturday evening Riverside Brewery Tour and TPC grounds pass for Saturday and Sunday and The World Golf Village package, May 24th – 27th Memorial Day Weekend includes 3 nights hotel, 2 rounds of golf, a welcome dinner, and Saturday evening Brewery Tour. Details of each package can be found at www.playhardertours.com or on their facebook page www.facebook.com/roadtripjax.

Swing into the Perfect
Destination Wedding If you are planning a wedding, why not fit golf into part of the big day? As we experienced recently at The Gasparilla Inn & Club, a picturesque historic resort in Boca Grande, love of the game blends easily with a destination wedding celebration. This 99-year-old Inn features a magnificent Pete Dye-designed 18hole course that provides spectacular views of Charlotte Harbor. An island course on its own private island, The Gasparilla Golf Club is certainly the crown jewel of this National Historic Landmark resort. As a result, brides and grooms have found creative ways to incorporate this championship landscape as part of an ideal
20
destination wedding celebration. The striking, graceful Banyan tree on The Gasparilla Golf Club’s 5th hole serves as a favorite shaded spot to say “I Do.” Also popular is the scenic driving range with Charlotte Harbor as the backdrop. The Golf Club’s gazebo, overlooking the course, is a choice spot for receptions and rehearsal dinners.
And, little touches like personalized golf balls or shirts as a welcome amenity always delight attendees. “Couples booking weddings here can truly enjoy their special day knowing that there is plenty of entertainment to keep their guests happy,” said Jack Damioli, president and general manager of The Gasparilla Inn & Club. “Our professional golf staff frequently put together outings or specialty ‘competitions’ for guests to enjoy during a destination wedding.” Fret not if a few of your attendees do not golf. The Inn, as we have discovered, provides plenty of additional opportunities for respite. The Spa, recently named the #11 in the nation by Conde Nast Traveler readers, offers a heavenly bamboo fusion massage as well as a lava and glacial shell body treatment, just to name a few of the many signature treatments offered on the extensive menu of spa services. (Gentlemen, check out the golfer’s massage.) Guests of the resort can also rent bikes or golf carts to traverse and explore the seven-mile-long island. In addition, The Inn also offers tennis courts, USCA-certified croquet lawns, boating and excellent sport fishing. Connecting for a Higher Cause
Charity tournaments have long been a huge part of the golf culture in the U.S. and internationally. In the U.S., the World Golf Foundation’s 2012 “Golf’s Charitable Impact” report estimated that 12,000 golf facilities host 140,000 charity golf events annually. Golf continues to be the great connector by not only bringing people together to raise money and support a great cause but also enabling the charity to educate and highlight its message. Events range in scope from national, regional and local. April is National Autism Awareness Month and the biggest champion of autism in golf is Ernie Els. In response to their son Ben’s autism diagnosis, Ernie and his wife Liesel created what’s become a charity-driven, amateur golf tournament that generates funds to support the building of the Center of Excellence for Autism. The facility will launch a global digital learning platform that will make available the best practices in education and therapy on the autism spectrum to thousands of children worldwide. The Golf Challenge consists of a series of super-regional events at top-rated courses across the United States and Canada from April through September. Two-person teams compete for a place at the Grand Finale – a two-day extravaganza of golf and entertainment hosted by Ernie and his friends from the PGA Tour in Las Vegas on October 13th & 14th, 2013. For more information, visit www.elsforautism. com/site/PageServer?pagename=golf_ challenge. “Liezl and I are private people, but we are also very much in the public eye and we recognize that this gives us a platform to help raise funds and awareness for the causes of Autism and its possible treatments. It is something that we both feel very passionate about.” Ernie Els You may have seen Els’ PSA on autism, which highlights the odds of having a child with the disorder. 32
On a regional level, one of the most successful organizations is the Jimmy Fund Golf, an outstanding example of the good achieved when hundreds of volunteer tournament organizers and thousands of golfers unite by connecting their love of golf to a higher cause: conquering cancer. The Jimmy Fund solely supports Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, raising funds for adult and pediatric cancer care and research to improve the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world. Jimmy Fund Golf has raised more than $91 million over the past 30 years to support adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In 2012, Jimmy Fund Golf raised nearly $6.5 million through more than 150 golf events between April and October. All of Jimmy Fund Golf’s tournaments are organized by volunteers and committees. Jimmy Fund Golf tournaments are held in 10 states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Colorado, Texas). For more, visit www.jimmyfundgolf.org. IMG Junior Golf Tour hits the links at Juliette Falls Golf Club The IMG Junior Golf Tour returned to action at Juliette Falls Golf Club in Dunnellon. Winds up to 30 mph on Saturday and temperatures in the 30s on Sunday made for tough playing conditions throughout the weekend. However, a full field of 88 players from nine states and 19 different countries rose to the challenge. Austen Truslow of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. made his first-ever appearance on the IMG Junior Golf Tour and won after shooting 75+72=147 (+3) through the weekend. Truslow edged out Colombia’s Mauricio Cuartas and Venezuela’s Manuel Torres, who each shot four-over 148 to tie for second. Truslow is ranked as the No. 94 player in the country by Junior Golf Scoreboard and is committed to the University of Virginia. “It’s a rewarding feeling after playing in tough conditions and it feels good to win,” said Truslow on the victory. “It’s a great golf course. I played in the high school state

championships here a couple of years ago and have always liked it.” Mexico’s Viviana Vazquez, another first-timer on the IMG Junior Golf Tour, took home a tightly-contested win in the Girls 15-18 Division. Vazquez recorded a solid six-over 150 to edge out China’s Vivian Chen (+7) by one stroke. “I worked on tweaking the putter all weekend, so I played with a different putter each day, but my driver really won the tournament for me,” said Vazquez of her performance. “Conditions were difficult and threw me off at first, because I’m not used to it being so cold coming from Mexico.” Meanwhile, Japan’s Kaito Onishi cruised to an easy win in the Boys 11-14 Division. Onishi was consistent, shooting 76+76=152 (+8) to best Singapore’s Qi Ming Wong (+16) by an eightstroke margin. It was Onishi’s fifth event this season, and his first victory after two second place finishes earlier in the season. Additionally, the points race in the Girls 15-18 Division for the Symetra Tour exemption continues to heat up down the stretch. Maria Rodriguez moved into sixth place in the exemption standings with a third place finish
over the weekend (+8), and could now potentially tie for the lead with a win at Victoria Hills in two weeks. Lisa Unterganschnigg maintained her spot in fourth place in the exemption standings, finishing in fifth place (+12), after leading the Girls Division following the first round. Juliette Falls is ranked by Golfweek as the No. 11 course you can play in the state of Florida. The event was ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard and AJGA Performance Based Entry Status was awarded to top finishers. Truslow and Vazquez each earned four performance stars for AJGA Performance Based Entry status, while the Boys 15-18 top five each earned one star. Winners in each division also qualified for the prestigious Callaway Junior World Golf Championships, to be held in San Diego, Calif., July 15-19. Find us at: www.imgjuniorgolftour.com.

Chromax High Visibility Technology
Reflective finish ensures your ball is 'Never Out of Sight' In the six years since Chromax Golf introduced the golf world to its innovative metallic golf balls at the 2007 PGA Show, color and technology have proven to be a growing trend on the PGA Tour. The combination has become a marketing success story for retailers desperately needing a boost in sales. In 2011 Srixon launched its Z-Star Tour yellow golf ball for “added visual performance.” TaylorMade’s White R11 and Super Fast Burner 2.0 have both proven to be two of the hottest product launches in recent years. Dressed in his signature orange, Rickie Fowler joined Cobra in 2012 to help promote their AMP driver. This year Nike is looking for the same type of success with the launch of it's Red Covert Driver.
sharply reduces lost balls. The ball’s sustained visibility in the air allows golfers to track their ball flight better and make adjustments to their swing. The ability to see the ball on the green helps provide feedback for better putting accuracy. Chromax metallic balls are produced in six easy-to-see colors (silver, gold, orange, blue, pink and green) and come in two different finishes and compressions (M1x and M2x) that offer both style and performance. In 2012, Chromax introduced purple to the M1x line. Both the M1x (75 compression) and M2x golf balls (85 compression) are USGA and R&A approved for tournament play.
Chromax Golf's patent-pending reflective finish provides more visibility on the green and in the air. The remarkable brightness of Chromax balls saves time searching for errant shots and

Golf School Ain’t for Sissies! “Do me a favor
and tweak open the toe of your left foot,” said Mike. This was the voice of one of our golf instructors at the National Golf School at Orange County National Golf Course in Orlando, Florida. This nationwide organization, which accredits over 2000 teaching pros, operates many golf programs at a multitude of golf courses throughout the country. Our band of four students, with ages ranging from early sixties to late seventies and handicaps of 12-16, had signed up for a three day course consisting of a personalized morning review of woods and irons, short game and putting, followed by an 18 hole afternoon playing lesson by our very personable and knowledgeable instructors Mike Gooding and Mike Vaughn. We were golfers of many years not necessarily looking for a radical 36
change, but instead a combination of small changes that could improve our individual games and our handicaps. Our instructors accommodated us by making minor suggestions—tempo, lower the hands, try this, check the address, tempo, flatten the swing on the turn a little, tempo, follow through over the left shoulder, tempo--
without overwhelming our swing thoughts. We hit about 200 balls in the mornings (far too many for aging bodies), and then played eighteen in the afternoon with our instructors, who gently questioned our club selection and our course strategies while exhibiting their own great swings on a few holes (as well as helping us find our errant shots). We thought the format worked well, the instructors were outstanding, and we wrote down copious notes to refer to months later when problems always arise. Our living accommodations at Orange County’s facility were more than adequate. However, the great attraction of Orange County National is the mammoth practice facility and, most importantly the Panther Lake and Crooked Cat courses which were great golf tracks on which to improve our games! Become a better putter with Radius Face Technology The Proof is in the Putting Ireland’s Barber Pole Golf is launching its c360 solid brass, precision-made Irish Links Series of putters featuring Radius Face Technology (RFT) to the U.S. market this spring. The use of Radius Face Technology in putter design has been evolving for more than a decade. Back in the days of classic course design, the maintenance of putting greens and the types of turf used were inconsistent. Tour pros started using putters with 3-4 degrees of loft to get the ball in the air and rotating quickly in an effort to avoid putts from being knocked off line or snagging in the grass. With the vast improvement in modern green surfaces, the need for lofted putters was no longer necessary and RFT was born.
- Portrush -
- Lahinch -
Employing RFT, the putter face is curved at a subtle arc to generate the dynamic topspin which generates positive and directed momentum or roll. When a ball is rolling on its intended line it has a better chance of reaching the target. The superior engineering of Barber Pole putters allows golfers to sink more putts because the momentum of the ball is greater.
- Ballybunion -
- Waterville -
“Radius Face Technology is designed to stroke the golf ball above the equator,” said A.J. Crinion, Putting Technologist Barber Pole Golf. “The connection produces immediate topspin and a true, forward roll for improved control and accuracy without any skidding.” According to testing by Quintic, a respected independent testing lab in England, Barber Pole Putters achieve “true roll” in the first nine inches of the putt -- three to four inches better than the competition. With putting contributing to 42 percent of scoring, every golfer should invest in a quality putter. Each Barber Pole putter face is carved from a

By using CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling technology, Barber Pole guarantees the quality and integrity of each of its putters. Barber Pole uses only the finest materials to ensure that every time you stand over a putt, you know you can make it. "By combining the natural properties of c360 solid brass with RFT, Barber Pole Putters deliver ‘true roll’ that leading Tour professionals practice hours to achieve and provide an incomparable and consistent feel with every putt." Crinion said. "Getting onto the putting surface is half the challenge, than the scoring part of the game begins." Barber Pole's putters come in four models. The Irish influence is evident with the names being synonymous with four of the world’s greatest links courses. The Ballybunion incorporates the ever-growing popularity of the mallet design using a double bend shaft to help align the shaft of the putter with the center of the face, making the putter face balanced. The Portrush is a classic plumbers neck design introduced to golf in the 1950s, which is offset. The Waterville is a mallet putter with the

Golf Industry Show in San Diego Don’t confuse the Golf Industry Show with the PGA Merchandise Show. Both are annual events consisting of trade shows and educational conferences. The PGA Show takes place in Orlando every January and is primarily for golf pros and clubhouse operations. The Golf Industry Show (GIS) takes place every February but changes location from east (Orlando), central (Various locations) and west (San Diego in 2013). The GIS focuses on golf course maintenance operations from cost effective design to major tournament preparation. The Golf Course Superintendents Association joins with the American Society of Golf Course Architects, the USGA Green Section, Golf Course Owners Association and Golf Course Builders to host a week long event consisting of an annual Golf Championship Event preceding the three-days of education sessions and two-day trade show. There are general sessions which are free and 1-day, 2-day and ½ day paid seminars which are rated as college level courses on all phases of turf agronomy: insect, disease and
weed control, irrigation management, cultural practices including proper mowing, aerification, verticutting, top dressing, soil amendments and bunker maintenance including the use of bunker liners and additives to stabilize the sand from washing out! There are also business topics from personnel and financial management including communications, leadership and budgeting techniques. There are always motivating and inspirational keynote speakers at the Opening and General Sessions. This year they were: Major Dan Rooney, a former F-16 fighter pilot and member of the PGA of America. He is the founder and president of the Folds of Honor Foundation and Patriot Golf Day. It was his vision to create a means by which families that have lost loved ones in combat could receive education scholarships and other assistance. Rooney has been honored with the White House’s Presidential Volunteer Service Award, the Air National Guard’s Distinguished Service Medal, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and the PGA of America’s Inaugural Patriot Award. He
has also been recognized as one of People Magazine’s 2008 Heroes of the Year and one of ABC World News Tonight’s Persons of the Year for 2008. Tears of pride and thanksgiving for our vets flowed freely during his presentation. We also had Golf Channel announcers Tim Rosaforte and Brandel Chamblee as speakers and they spoke about the great and often under appreciated job that superintendents do around the globe. Their “ham and egg” routine injected some humor into the event. I hope they tell a little more about what “supers” do during upcoming tournament broadcasts of Golf Central sessions. The days spent at GIS are from 8 to 5 or like a normal workday. After hours there are receptions and social functions where the attendees catch up with old friends in the business, and meet new folks who have common interests and/or challenges. I call these Networking Sessions and you often learn just as much from these outings, which can help you solve a problem at work, or just make a new friend or contact in the industry.

Research scientists from the University of Florida recently held a Nutrient Management Symposium to present results from a study sponsored by the Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection concerning the use and fate of fertilizers. Data from five years of testing soil and water samples shows that the proper use of plant nutrients does not harm the environment. That means using the 4R’s of fertilizer use: Right product, Right rate, Right place and Right time. Healthy turfgrass is a positive asset to our communities. Golf Course Architect Dr. Michael Hurdzan (at the podium and in the red shirt) was awarded the GCSAA’s Old Tom Morris Award recognizing his lifetime service to the golf industry. Hurdzan has specialized in designing environmentally friendly golf courses. Old Tom Morris is credited with being the first golf course superintendent, a club maker, golf pro and pretty darn good player at the Old Course in St. Andrews.

Italians are masters at knowing what’s important in life – good food, good friends and good times. Their passion for living is reflected in their impeccable fashion sense, iconic art & architecture and delectable cuisine. When it comes to cooking, Italians have an incredible knack for blending the finest ingredients to create icons of gastronomy. A perfect example is Tiramisu, a dessert developed years ago in Treviso, Italy. The combination of ladyfingers soaked in espresso, mascarpone cream and cocoa powder was deliciously tempting and the recipe quickly spread to the United States where its popularity exploded. For fans of this remarkable dessert, they can now try Tiramisu Italian liqueur. It is a liqueur that tastes every bit as delicious as its namesake dessert, because it is crafted using quality decadent ingredients. Tiramisu Italian Liqueur is Imported from Sommacampagna, Italy and reminiscent of the decadent Italian dessert. This liqueur offers a delicious taste that is mixable in a variety of cocktails and a tempting ingredient for pastry chefs and home cooks.

Hampshire’s Double Eagle seals 7th Annual Ocala Open Victory Beginning the final round 4 shots behind the leaders, Travis Hampshire of Tampa, Florida went right to work, setting his sights on eliminating the 4 shot deficit and move him in to a solid command of the lead. It only took the front nine to eliminate the 4 shots, shooting a 4 under par 32, which included 2 bogeys. Travis started out the back nine with birdies on 10 and 11. Then on the par 5, 12th hole, a blind second shot to the green, all but sealed the victory for Hampshire. Travis said, “I was 235 yards out and had the bunker in the middle of the fairway that actually blocked the view to the green. I made a full swing, and I knew that I caught all of it.” Travis explained, “I saw the ball climbing and then I lost sight of it. The next time I saw the ball, I was looking in the hole,

as I reached in to take it out.” An Albatross… Double Eagle… whatever you call it, it virtually sealed the victory at that point for Travis. He went on to birdie 13, and 17 on his way to eclipsing the field with an 11 under par 61, finishing with a 15 under par, 201 collecting the $12,000 first place prize. Eric Cole of Orlando was one of 4 leaders as he started the final round, had trouble with his putts. “I really didn’t hit the ball that bad today,” said 46
Cole, “I just couldn’t get it close enough to get the birdies falling in my favor,” Eric explained. “Candler Hills was in great shape, and the greens were rolling a little faster on the final day, but there really isn’t anything to complain about,” Cole stated. Cole finished with a 3 under par 69 for the day, and a 205. 4 shots behind Hampshire and taking home a check for $7,000. Florida Professional Golf Tour, owner, Rick Hendershot said, “you can always count on the Ocala Open being an
Eric Cole exciting event for all of the participants and it is great to see the 2008 champion, Travis Hampshire returning to the Ocala Open to be the 2013.” Ken Colen presenting the check to the Champion Travis Hampshire, mentioned that although It is a real honor to have a returning champion to the Ocala Open, the true winner of the event was the 2 charities that were supported by the tournament. Time Travel Time travel has long been a concept of moving from point to point in time or in space. Hypothetically, time travel involves moving forward, or backwards, from current time to a selected point. No where have I ever experienced the concept of a time machine and time travel than a recent trip to Far Hills, New Jersey. My Time Travel trip was to the United States Golf Association Museum. When I stepped up to the USGA Museum front door and turned the handle, the true feeling of entering a mystical time machine was there, to transport me back me back in time to the beginning of Golf in America. Before exploring the museum on my own, I
had a brief meeting with Michael Trostel, Curator/Historian of the museum. I asked a couple of simple questions… like “Why Far Hills, New Jersey.” Michael explained that the original USGA was founded by 5 golf facilities and that the original office of the USGA was located in New York City. The decision was to purchase property outside the metro area and have enough space to establish a holding facility (museum) for all of golf for future generations to enjoy. I asked the next loaded questioned, “Being Museum Curator and Historian, what are the most unusual items in the museum?” Boy, was I surprised at the answers. Michael explained that in the Arnold Palmer room is a drawing of “The King”. It wasn’t really a drawing of traditional manner. All of the drawing was actually done with quotes inked by James David Chase entitled Palmer’s Gratitute. Taking 14 years to complete, the video explained the artist basically inked 8 words per day
48
and over that 14 years… developed this piece of art in to 22,719 words describing the dedication to golf by Arnold Palmer. The amazing part of this picture was that when you did a close up of Arnold’s eyes… the eye’s were made up of the words “Winnie.” Arnold’s true love. That was great… okay… what else am I looking for? The term World War II came up as part of the “The Depression and World War II” Era. Michael explained that golf balls were produced by prisons. The fact that rubber wasn’t available for recreational use… golfers still wanted to play, so they had the prisoners making golf balls. My first thought was that they were a cross between the early “Feathery” ball and a baseball. That was truly an awesome site. In the same display, was special Temporary Rules for 1941
war time golf in England. Shrapnel and/or bomb splinters on the Fairways, or in Bunkers, within a club’s length of a ball, may be moved without penalty, and no penalty shall be incurred if a ball is thereby caused to move accidentally. My day was nearly complete and I was having a hard time getting myself to focus on the balance of the museum, but it all came to reality in the Ben Hogan Room. In this large room with artifacts from Mr. Hogan life surrounding the room, you realized that the huge area rug in the middle of the room summed up golf for most all of us… “The prospect that there was going to be golf in my day made me feel privileged and happy, and I couldn’t wait for the sun to come up the next morning so that I could get out on the course again.” Ben Hogan. Plan a visit to the USGA Museum and Arnold Palmer Center for Golf History, 77 Liberty Corner Road, Far Hills, NJ 07931.

Can You Imagine? Can you imagine the temperature in southern Florida getting as low as the upper 30’s and lower 40’s? I can. Can you imagine a professional golfer topping one off the tee (and not even reaching the ladies’ tee)? I can. Can you imagine a golf destination where you have great accommodations wrapped around 54 holes of Tom Fazio and Pete Dye designed golf courses? I can. In early March the PGA made its way to Palm Beach, home of the Honda Classic. And can you imagine that last year’s Champion - Rory McIlroy

would withdraw over poor play and a toothache? I can. All of the above happened in one weekend. It sounds like it should have played out over at least 3-4 weeks, but it didn’t. Hold on to your seats and keep your hands and feet inside the car at all times, ‘cause here we go. My weekend began with an uneventful drive from Tampa to Palm
Beach to arrive at the 2nd Round of the Honda Classic, just in time to get my Media Credentials from Gary Ferman (Media Director) and cruise out to the 9th hole viewing platform to watch some of the last groups come in (since they started groups off on the front and back that day). The 9th Hole, which included the Michelob Ultra Tent, was also “party central” as soon as play was

completed. Matt PaneGasser (Oakley Rep and previous FGCM Golf Bachelor) was the DJ for the event, which included a serious dose of thumping club music and fireworks. With the temperature dropping and the pillow calling my name I beat a hasty retreat to my one bedroom golf villa in Port St. Lucie. The villa was located in the PGA Village where you have your choice of three - 18 hole tracks and awesome training facilities. A drive through the village highlighted an array of license plates from all over the U.S. and Canada. You could tell that this was the place to come with your friends and/or family to play some serious golf. As I arrived the next day to watch the third round of the Honda Classic it was obvious that the world’s Top Ranked players were having difficulty with the winds and the cool temperatures. After watching the likes of: Dustin Johnson, Lucas Glover, Boo Weekley, Rickie Fowler and Keegan Bradley tee off, I decided to trail Keegan Bradley and his playing partner for the day, Chris Kirk, for a few holes. This is
Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 1
where things get interesting. The 4th hole is a short Par 4 (376 yards, most of the pros were hitting a fairway wood or metal. Chris Kirk teed up his ball and with all the finesse of a true amateur proceeded to top his drive into the rough just off the side of the lady’s tee. You could have heard a pin drop and the look on Keegan’s face said it all - “OMG”. Even Chris had to laugh at himself as he pulled out his three wood and drilled one down the fairway. Several of us wondered why, since he didn’t reach the lady’s tee with his drive, why he didn’t abide by the age-old tradition we all laugh about in our rounds of golf with our buddies. (If I have to explain it, it loses its humor). Chris bogeyed the 4th and proceeded to chunk his iron shot into the water on the par 3 5th, on his way to a three putt induced triple bogey, 6. I share the preceding with you to make all of us feel better about the next time we duff one off the tee and 3 jack after going in the drink. After watching the pros struggle with the cool temps and driving winds, I thought to myself, “Why not test my own skills in these conditions,” and decided
to play the Tom Fazio designed Ryder Course at the PGA Village. After one of the most pleasant greetings from Rashad in the Pro Shop, I was paired up with Bill and Chuck (couple of nice guys from Long Island, NY, who were down with 8 other buddies for non-stop golf, cigars and an occasional adult beverage). Rather than bore you with the challenges of 15-20 mph wind gusts, wind-chill induced hypothermia (just kidding), and a few holes I am still trying to forget, I will share the few highlights from our round. I birdied the #1 handicap par 5 4th hole, a constantly curving dogleg. Chuck nearly aced the par 3 5th hole. On the 10th hole, Chuck and Bill fed a couple of cranes their granola bar in hopes of an up-close photo opp, and Bill believes that kind gesture was the reason they par’d the hole and I “birdied”. You don’t have to wait until next year’s Honda Classic to enjoy a trip to the PGA Village. Call the Perfect Drive Villas (772-873-0515) or visit them online at www.perfectdriveatpgavillage.com. Cyril Suk takes the Florida Azalea Amateur UNF’s Osten Waite throws in an eagle 2 at the final hole for an exciting finish
Cyril Suk was on a mission to make up for nearly taking this event last year falling one stroke short. This year was different as the Jacksonville University team member dealt with pressure from UNF’s Osten Waite all 3 days. They tied for third in round one, and then tied for the lead after round 2. The horse race was on for the final round. As they traded birdies and pars throughout the round, no one else was making a charge. It was theirs to win or lose. Suk new which choice was to be his, Suk and Waite kept the rest of the field out of the picture throughout the final day for a one-on-one battle to the finish. Suk held off relentless pressure from Waite and finally had the victory all but in his back pocket as they approached the final 18th hole with a comfortable 2 shot lead. Then the fireworks started. Waite Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 1
picked Suk’s back pocket victory march with one swing of his wedge with a slam dunk eagle 2 on the final hole to tie Suk. Just like that, it was a tie game with only Suk left to play out 18 and suddenly needing a birdie for the win. The JU player didn’t flinch. Suk stuck his wedge at the flag and then smoothed in a gutsy birdie putt for a final round 65 and the win by one shot. It doesn’t get better than that. At the Senior Azalea event in the previous week, David Anthony of Jacksonville continued his domination of Cyril Suk the senior circuits, not to mention one of the best amateur Underwood Cup team players ever, by taking a 3 shot win over Greg Reynolds of St. Augustine, Bill Zylstra of Ocklawaha, FL and former PGA Tour star and golf network announcer Steve Melnyk. The overall winner of both events was the city-owned Palatka Golf Club. Now under the management of Bobby Weed Designs, this historic Donald Ross layout has seen a remarkable comeback to great conditions not seen in over a decade. The course is seeing record-breaking play which is a far cry from 4 years ago when the course was in major disrepair and the city commission of Palatka was considering shutting it down while bleeding red ink. Bobby Weed is one of the foremost golf course designers in the country and is no stranger to Donald Ross designs including the renovation of
Osten Waite the historic Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville. He came to the rescue of the Palatka Golf Club with a master plan to save the historic course from extinction and was unanimously approved by the Palatka city council. The rest is “history” with a complete overhaul of the course management, expert agronomy planning, changing Ph levels of the water supply to promote better turf growth, and good old fashioned hard work. The result is terrific new staff in the clubhouse and pro shop headed by Andy Heartz, Director of Golf, a very playable course with excellent conditions, a layout that can be walked, and just may now be one of the best 6,000 yard courses in the state. It took a full 2 years before results could be seen as the need for repairs of the course was massive. But Bobby Weed’s master plan worked brilliantly, and the Florida Azalea Amateur contestants were treated to a piece of Palatka golf history in great conditions that haven’t been seen at that level in decades. A Friendly Rivalry Through Football and Golf, Two Coaches Blindly Build a Meaningful Bond
An 8:37 a.m. tee time on a Tuesday morning looks much the same as it did the previous Tuesday. That’s when golf courses can always expect to see their most reliable patrons — the leisured and needlessly systematic retirees, or as they’re known at Windy Harbor Golf Club in Mayport, Fla., “the usual suspects.” At this particular golf course, the group that has booked this tee time every week for the past six years are eight retired high school football coaches. Their Tuesday mornings now bear a similar resemblance to the friendly rivalry they used to share every Friday night of football season. Their arsenal of cheap jabs for each other has been building since their last round, and
Fred Pickard guiding JimDeAngelis with a glimmer in the eye, they waste no time greeting a familiar face, the golf starter. “Pleasure to see ya, John.” “No, it’s mine, Fred. Always my pleasure.” “You both lie like hell.” “You wanna kick him off the course, Johnny? He’s saying curse words!” “Well, playing with you, I don’t blame him!” Typical old-guy banter. But after the obligatory not-so-niceties are exchanged, the dialog among this group
Fred Pickard guiding JimDeAngelis 66
takes on a more somber tone. “Straight ahead,” says Fred Pickard, former head football coach of 21 years for Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville, Fla., with what may have sounded like a suggested approach to his partner for the upcoming fairway. But instead, he was guiding Jim DeAngelis, his long-time coaching rival from Fletcher High School who is now blind, through the boundary ropes of the sixth green. Jim lost his sight 11 years ago — after a nearly 30-year coaching and teaching career at several high schools in Jacksonville. He used to golf with the other coaches on the weekends after the tension from the Friday night games had worn off. Then one day he noticed he couldn’t see the ball on the drive. “I didn’t think anything of it. I would just tell the guys, ‘You all are going to have to tell me where my ball goes.’ I called them my seeing-eye dogs,” Jim said. It wasn’t until he started having double vision and blurred vision that he had it checked out. The optometrist said his eyes were not the problem and suggested he visit a neurosurgeon, who identified what he thought was a pituitary adenoma, a type of brain tumor. The good news was that it could potentially shrink with treatment, and most importantly, that it was benign. He had heard the word “malignant” twice before in his life — and overcame the cancer both times — so he wasn’t too worried this time about any potential life-altering effects. “I thought, ‘This is a piece of cake,’” Florida Golf Central • Volume 14, Issue 1
he said. But three weeks of acupuncture and 36 treatments of radiation later, surgery became the last option. “It ended up not being quite as easy as I thought.” What the surgeon discovered wasn’t the soft, easy-to-remove pituitary adenoma they had hoped, but a brick-hard tumor called a meningioma. They tried two surgeries to remove it unsuccessfully. The reality became that Jim wouldn’t leave the hospital with any improvement in his vision. But even more unexpected was leaving the hospital with worse vision. Because of the vascular nature of the tumor, the disruption to it during the second surgery triggered a blood vessel spasm that damaged his optic nerve. “And I woke up blind.” He had a small bit of sight left in one eye, but it was not enough to ease the frustration of losing overnight the ability to read your own mail, among other simple tasks for which he was now reliant on friends and family. Still, he managed to retain his calm, soft-spoken nature. “It’s terrible what happened,” said Fred, who went to visit him in the hospital when it happened. “But I guess they give it to the people who can handle it.” One bright spot in the darkness for Jim turned out to be an actual bright white spot. With the remaining vision in his
Voted

one eye, he could just make out a faint, blurry golf ball. A couple years following the spasm, he was out at Jacksonville Beach Golf Course with relatives in town for a family reunion. “I wasn’t going to play,” he said. “But we were on the tee, and my cousin told me to get up there and try it. We played five holes, and I was ready to go in. I was just terrible.” Then, inexplicably, he made par on hole 6. Bogeyed hole 7. Bogey again on 8. And again on 9 with a 10-foot putt. His brother and cousin couldn’t believe it. Their shouts of disbelief were disruptive enough that the golf course management had to come out and tell them to keep it down. Over the course of the following year, that white spot, too, began to fade, and his sight failed completely. His two sons live nearby with their families and checked in with him often, but other than a few weekly errands and appointments they would take him to, his daily activities were limited to what he could do safely on his own — mostly sitting on the couch. All the while, Jim kept in touch with his football coaching friends and knew they were still making weekly trips to go golfing. He asked Fred if he could walk
with him since tagging along seemed a perfect solution to get some regular exercise with a guide and good company — or as good of company as a former opponent could be, anyway. “I didn’t like him then. Don’t like him now,” Fred said. But the arrangement has stuck. Fred has been picking Jim up for golf every Tuesday morning for the past five years, and the two have developed a seamless routine on the course that appears as though they’ve never known anything different. “Did you par that?” Jim asks. “Nope!” Fred laughs. Fred puts out his arm, Jim takes hold, and it’s off to the next tee box. “This is a ramp, now. Straight across.” And just when an onlooker might be touched by the depth of this unique friendship, they would be quickly reminded of whom they’re dealing with: old guys playing golf, whose insults for each other easily outlast their endurance for 18 holes. “He walks fast to try to wear me out,” Jim said, to which Fred replied, “He’s a sissy.”

Pictured here is the Prodigy, one of RIFE’s new bi-metal offerings. The Steel face and belly combined with an aluminum chassis provides an extraordinary amount of feedback upon contact.
