My mom and I at Heathrow Country Club for an FGCM Soirée in 2001
appy Mother’s Day!! It’s hard to stress the importance of Mother’s Day. Buying a gift can be really tricky. Whether it’s chocolate, flowers, a simple card or even taking traffic class for Mom because she got a speeding ticket. Whatever the gift is does not matter that much, just the thought of it, your presence and that you put forth the effort to remember her. My Mother, Terrie Purdum, aka The Queen Bee, has introduced me to many different and wonderful things in my life. One being the world of golf and everything that her hard work with Florida Golf Central Magazine has introduced me to and all the advantages it has to offer. Not to brag, but since I was young, 10 years old, I got to experience more resorts and golf courses than most people get to see in a lifetime. For example, Olde Beau, Mountain Air, and Lake Lure in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina are some of the most spectacular courses I’ve had the chance of playing and visiting. The best part of being able to enjoy these (golf and wonderful accommodations) is that I got to do it with my family- My mom, sister Tonyia, my little niece and nephew Sydney and Tyler, and even though we butt heads, my brother in law Chris. There are two things my mother taught me: It doesn’t matter what you’re doing as long as you have doing it and the importance of family. I am extremely proud to tell everyone that Florida Golf Central Magazine is my mom’s publication and that it has been the only monthly, full color, glossy travel and lifestyle magazine for over 12 years. Most people are baffled on how she manages to produce such a great magazine and sell the cover or fill 3 empty pages in no time whatsoever every single month. If you know my mother, you understand the tenacity and dedication she has towards fulfilling her goals no matter what they are. I wouldn’t be the person I am if it wasn’t for the The Queen Bee, My Mom, Terrie Purdum.

storage area, Ehrgott was able to design a practice facility that features an 800-square foot chipping and putting green with realistic contours. The green is framed by a collar of 2-1/4” synthetic rye/ bluegrass rough to simulate real chipping conditions and a ½” fairway chipping area to practice tight lies. The practice area also features a four-station, netted hitting bay that is 20 feet deep and outfitted with a launch monitor, and a putting area used for video analysis and putting mechanics. “The goal was to maximize the available shot
values within the limited space,” Ehrgott said. “We wanted to give the Harvard University men’s and women’s golf teams the ability practice various shots from multiple surfaces and lies so they could be better prepared for the early spring events in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA tournament.”
GOLF RESPONDS IN TIME OF NEED By PGA TOUR Staff ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.—When Japan was ravaged by an earthquake and tsunami on March 11, golf’s global organizations, as they have done in many other instances previously, quickly mobilized their support of Japanese relief efforts. The organizations that comprise the World Golf Foundation Board of Directors, namely the LPGA Tour, the PGA European Tour, the PGA TOUR and the players and tournaments they respectively represent, along with the Masters Tournament, the PGA of America, the R&A and the USGA, collectively contributed more than $1 million to relief efforts in Japan. Golf has been a long-time supporter of relief efforts previously, including immediately following natural disasters in Australia and New Zealand most recently before Japan. While golf has long been recognized for the support it generates for various charitable causes through the staging of golf tournaments, both professional and amateur, it also is usually among the first industries to provide financial support to relief efforts following natural disasters on global basis. 8

Restaurant Wars...
By Jennifer M. Jolly, CCM
A Unique Training Vehicle for Clubs
Dan Webber, Deb Jordan and Jeff Leshyn
I
have a tremendous Executive Chef. I realize that is a pretty powerful statement, but it’s true. I suppose I can write a paragraph or two about why I think that, but in the grand scheme of things it probably isn’t all that interesting to you and he would probably prefer I save all my “good stuff” for this annual review J This idea, “Restaurant Wars,” was his … and I find it genius as we have turned it into a internal competition and training vehicle. Here’s what we have done so far … we have two clubhouses at Sawgrass Country Club, a golf club and a beach club. Within those clubs we share about 65 employees. Each club has a Sous Chef, one has a Junior Sous Chef. Each club has a Supervisor and we have one Banquet Captain that assists our Catering Manager at events held at both clubs. Through these positions, we have created three leadership teams … Chef du Cuisine at the Beach Club Micah Windham with Banquet Captain Catherine Faulk and brand new Line Cook Ryan Obernier … Sous Chef at the Golf Club Dan Webber with Supervisor Deb Jordan and newly promoted from Dishwasher to Line Cook Jeff Leshyn … and finally Junior Sous Chef Marvin McClelland, Supervisor Justine Ortiz and Lead Line Cook Alfredo Cotto. Their jobs then became to create their teams
10
by choosing Culinary, Servers, Runners, Bussers and Bartenders. This was handled similarly to a football draft, with the least experienced team choosing first in the round robin to fill what they felt was the most critical positions with the teammate that best matched the skill set they were looking for. From there, each team was given the charge to come up with a restaurant name, a theme and appropriate menus, pricing, etc. The teams meet as they feel
is necessary – they are responsible for all aspects of the process from “hiring”, training, developing staffing compliments, ordering food, liquor, linen, booking entertainment, creating menus that allow the patrons of their restaurants to be seated, order two courses and enjoy them within 40 minutes. This includes having a back up plan just in case things don’t go the way they’re supposed to … just like a real food and beverage operation! Having the staff think about what creates a great experience ... focusing on the simple things that often get over looked from the entrance with a warm welcome, to the fond farewell at the end. And how that experience can be better than the other restaurants. Ultimately that thought process is in turn used on a daily basis to improve our operation. Where part of the education process is for them to learn how to do these things on their own, Executive Chef Perry Kenney and I, along with our two experienced Dining Room Managers are here for counsel, to bounce ideas off of and to make sure, at the end of the day, nothing truly gets missed as we want the membership to have the best possible experience. Now… the role of the membership … we have developed a reservation spreadsheet that automatically sched-
Marvin McClelland, Justine Ortiz and Alfredo Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 2
ules the reservations of up to 39 tables to rotate through the restaurants at 40 minute intervals. The members will make their initial reservation at one of the three themed restaurants. When they arrive they will be greeted and taken through the dining experience just as they would any other evening except the portions will be a bit smaller as they will be eating three times and they will be escorted to their next dining location at the end of their experience at the each restaurant. Our restaurants will all be six to eight table outdoor establishments; one at our Sand Bar, one at our Adult Pool area and one on our Oasis Deck; all having views of the ocean. This will pose a second challenge to our teams as the main kitchen is inside the Beach Club. They will have to rely on their own teams as well as the cooperation of the other teams with respect to prep areas, use of certain kitchen appliances, service items and pantry/ walk-in space for staging. This is a very exciting project for all of us. It has been a tremendous growth opportunity for our new managers and has created incredible camaraderie and increased morale amongst the group. Who is the winner you might ask?? Well, I will contend that we will all win with this program, but the membership
Ryan, Catherine Faulk and Micah Windham will actually vote on their favorite aspects of each venue. This information will not only allow us to choose a 2011 Champion team, but it will also help us to gather more intel on what our members want out of a dining experience, new items to add to our ever changing menus and a vehicle to, as a group, ascertain our strengths and challenges to better develop internal training for the team!
I am very excited about this … our date is Thursday, June 16. I will follow up next month with our winning restaurant. If there is anyone out there who has done something similar at their club, or is interested in duplicating our event, please feel free to contact me at jjolly@sawgrasscountryclub.com or 904.273.3731. Off to a busy TPC this week! Happy May, Jenn.

Where were you born? Did you grow up there?
Boston, Ma. Lived there until I was 22, until I figured out golf was my passion and golfing in the snow is difficult.
High school group you hung out with the most; nerds, jocks, stoners, preppies? Jocks, I picked
on the nerds, partied with the stoners, laughed at the preppies. Nice clothing bro.
What do you do for a living?
I am the assistant golf professional at Tuscawilla Country Club. [I’m in it for the discount] I really would like to pursue my golfing career, but my boss, Will Bernazzani, doesn’t give me enough time off.
What would you like to do for a living? I am
doing it. I would also love to design my own clothing line. Back 9 Magic [comes out in May 2013]
Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Love watching movies, playing xbox, working out [do that for the ladies], drinking beer, and most of all I love to dance. No joke I can move.
Keith Goodale
Steak, chicken, or seafood?
Seafood if it’s from Boston, especially clams. And anybody who says the whole bellies are disgusting is lame.
Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know. I cried when Mufasa died in the Lion King. Oops, guess that’s out now.
What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island?
Golf clubs, water [obviously] and the lead singer from The Pussy Cat Dolls.
Who would you like to have with you on the same deserted island; and why? Nicole Scherzinger, because if we were the only two
people on that island, I think I got a chance and If I made it off the island, I’d text all my boys and told them what happened. I don’t call people I text.
What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? Driving up on the greens, and not obeying the
cart path signs. We don’t just put them out there because they look pretty.
Name the three most important things to you in this world. My parents, laughter, and friends.
Given the choice; would you select love, success, or money to keep yourself happy? Money, lets get real. See the smile on my face, earto-ear baby! 12

Competing for an opportunity to put his career on the fast track, the champion of Big Break Indian Wells will receive an exemption to compete in the 2012 Zurich Classic of New Orleans on the PGA TOUR and a minimum of $55,000 in cash, one of the biggest prizes in Big Break history, among other prizes. Geri, 37, the top-ranked amateur and professional golfer from Israel, has represented his native country in numerous International events, including several World Cup matches. He has competed on various mini-tours with moderate success over the past 15 years. The cast of Big Break Indian Wells are at different stages of their professional careers. Some have competed professionally on the world’s top tours, some are just beginning their journey in professional golf and others
have gone in a different direction career-wise because of life decisions. The 10-episode series will feature an all-new format – each competitor will begin with $5,000, with the objective to win each other’s earnings on the golf course and to be the last man standing. Other Floridians Joining Geri on Big Break Indian Wells are: Hernan “Piri” Borja (25, Coral Springs, Fla.) – Son of 1984 U.S. Olympic Soccer team captain Chico Borja, Piri wants to follow in the footsteps of his famous father by becoming an Olympian – only on the golf course. Piri is currently playing on the mini-tour circuits. David Byrne (23, Essex, Ontario, Canada / Orlando, Fla.) – The youngest competitor on Big Break Indian Wells, Byrne has enormous talent. He recently graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy, where he was 2010 Horizon League Player of the Year. Byrne gave up his amateur status and kicked off his professional golf career by competing on Big Break Indian Wells. Robert Floyd (35, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) – The most experienced competitor on the series, Floyd is the son of Hall-of-Famer Raymond Floyd. Robert has competed in more than 30
PGA TOUR and Nationwide Tour events over the past 15 years, but has yet to achieve similar success as his father. Currently, he is a real estate professional in Palm Beach Gardens. Justin Payne (30, Floydada, Texas) – Payne’s golf career has been victimized by bad breaks and bad timing. One of the top junior golfers coming out of Texas, Payne has had several false starts in getting his golf career on the fast track due to injuries and family matters. Currently, Payne competes part-time on the Adams Tour while managing the family ranch with his father. Golf Channel’s Tom Abbott and Stephanie Sparks return as co-hosts for the series. Filmed on location in January at Indian Wells Golf Resort in Indian Wells, Calif., the series will unfold on the resort’s two championship golf courses – Celebrity Course and Players Course. The Celebrity Course is a two-time host to the PGA TOUR’s Skins Game, and both courses are ranked as one of California’s top-20 courses by GOLF Magazine and Golfweek Magazine – the only 36-hole facility in the state to boast that honor.

The second time was during late 2010 when I met Eugene Hong who, at age eleven, recently won the Club Championship at the Ventura Country Club in Orlando, Florida in February 2011. Both players demonstrated a quiet, ever present, monumental determination to be a WINNER; to be the BEST; no matter what the obstacles and then backed it up with results! Even though the Ventura course is no Bay Hill in terms of distance it is a very challenging, tight layout, with narrow fairways, small greens, and water hazards on twelve of the eighteen holes. Eugene shot 73-72 on the par 70 track against a range of golfers with low to high handicaps and with ages from 20 to 80. Afterwards he claimed he Eugene Hong should have shot better but his put24
local amateur golf tournaments. By age nine (2009) he won the Fall Eagle Junior Golf championship and the AAU Winter Nationals 10 and under title. He won again in 2010 at the Fall Eagle Junior golf event and took home the Player of the Year (boys 10 and under) title of the U.S. Kids golf tournament. When asked if he was worried about becoming disinterested or “burned out” about playing golf Eugene replied, “How can you get ‘burned out’ if you can never be too good in golf? A person might become burned out if he or she is perfect and has been playing a long, long time but golf is the greatest game that has ever been invented. No one has been perfect with golf.” His father also stated that Eugene’s dream is to become a PGA golfer and that he is willing to sacrifice, and has already done so, in order to reach that goal. Eugene likes to swim and occasionally plays a little basketball but golf is the be all and end all game for him right now. You’ve heard about and read about young golfers making a name for themselves so remember that name…Eugene Hong! From where I’m standing Eugene has that special something where you’ll be hearing it again. Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 2

olt Ford is a walking, talking 300-pound celebration of country music and country living. His songs pay tribute to the people, pastimes and attitudes that define a lifestyle embraced from Texas to Wisconsin, from Florida to Washington State and a lot of places in between. For all the bigger-than-life excitement that defines his music and his stage show, though, Colt is quick to point to what lies underneath it all. “I’m just an average Joe who’s been blessed with the ability to write music and who loves to perform,” he says. “I talk about everyday real country life and I believe in real country values— God, family, friends, and hard work. And if that ain’t country, I don’t know what is.” His connections to the lifestyle run deep. An avid sports fan and outdoorsman, he wrote “Buck ‘Em” for the Professional Bull Riders Association, and “Huntin’ The World,” the awardwinning theme song of the popular Outdoor Channel show of the same name, and he capped a lifetime of appreciation for country music’s rich musical heritage when he made his debut early in 2010 on the Grand Ole Opry. Colt’s specialty is spoken-word country in the tradition of a line of hits that travels from Toby Keith’s “I Want To Talk About Me” to Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” (a song he covers to huge effect in concert) through Jerry Reed’s “Amos Moses” and C. W. McCall’s “Convoy” to Johnny Cash’s “A Boy Named Sue” and “What Is Truth.” His latest CD, Chicken and Biscuits, sets his world-class story-telling ability to cutting-edge music played by some of Nashville’s best players. It brings together the energy of hip-hop and the depth and rootedness of country in a project destined to carry Colt’s unique sound to an even wider audience. Chicken and Biscuits, produced by Jayson Chance and Shannon “Fatshan” Houchins, is Colt’s second studio album, following his 2008 breakthrough Ride Through The Country, which catapulted the Georgia native to mainstream status, with sales of more than 150,000 and paid downloads approaching half a million, Chicken and Biscuits perfectly captures the spirit that has energized

packed houses across the country and spurred many Colt fans to drive hours to follow his shows from town to town. It’s a reaction that has made him one of the most genuinely grateful and fan-friendly performers in the business—he is in touch with fans on a daily basis online and he is adamant about meeting with them after his shows. “I’m a big boy and you can bet I get tired up there,” he says, “but I do what I do visiting with people and signing autographs because I have the best fans in the world. I’m inspired by their energy and I want to give them everything I’ve got.” In part the connection is there because Colt Ford is cut from the same cloth as the people who flock to his shows. He grew up outside Athens, Georgia, drinking in Southern country culture with the water, developing a deep appreciation for the outdoors and enjoying every kind of popular music that floated across the airwaves in a state whose musical icons are as diverse as they are talented. “I never got into music,” he says. “Music got into me. It’s always been a part of my life.” His first concert was Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, but as a teenager his appreciation for hip-hop and R&B led him in that direction as well. A sports enthusiast from early on, he excelled at both golf and music by the time he reached adulthood. When, as a young married man with a baby on the way, his wife advised him to choose one and throw himself whole-heartedly into it, he chose golf. “I figured I had a better chance of making a living at that,” he says. He spent more than a decade doing just that with his golf clubs, but he kept making music on the side. “Even though I was doing something else for a living,” he says, “I could never just cut this off. It’s who I am.” With encouragement from his wife, he wrote “Buck ‘Em” for the PBR, and the organization quickly made it its anthem. Colt made his musical and video debut on national television at the VERSUS Invitational Pro Bull Riding competition in Madison Square Garden in January 2007. He was off and running. Putting it on stage was just a matter of letting his Inner Country Boy out, and that’s where the Colt Ford persona let him become a true force of nature with no hesitation about taking country music and the country life over the top. Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 2
“I’m really just a guy who put on different clothes to be himself,” he says. “I’m probably more comfortable in Colt Ford’s skin than in my own. I know I don’t necessarily look like the average country star, but I think when people see me on stage they think, ‘Wow, man! Is that dude having fun!’ They’ll never see me just go through the motions. I’ve been up there with a 103 degree fever, during a bout with kidney stones, and when I’m beyond tired, but that adrenaline and those crowds guarantee that they’ll know this fat Georgia boy is giving them every
single thing he’s got.” He and his friend of 20 years Shannon Houchins arrived in Nashville “not knowing anything about the way the business was done,” he says, but they began meeting people and impressing them with their music and their drive. Colt and Shannon formed their own label, Average Joes Entertainment, both to stay in control of their approach and to put their own vision into play. Along the way, Colt Ford has become one of the hardest working entertainers anywhere. 31

Premier golf and much more…
Do
you love to play golf? Is your wife or girlfriend just a little less enthusiastic about the sport? Are you trying to plan a special vacation where you can pursue your own interests without worrying about whether she will feel ignored while you are doing so? Have we got the answer for you! Visit Fairmont’s Turnberry Isle, located about halfway between South Beach and Fort Lauderdale. At the resort you can play golf on phenomenal courses, play tennis on incredible courts, dine in world class restaurants, get pampered in a 25,000 square foot spa and fitness center, take advantage of the 3 mile jogging course, lounge by gorgeous pools, take a shuttle to the resort’s Ocean Club on the Atlantic, get a glimpse of celebrities, and indulge in world class shopping at the Aventura Mall which is only a short 5 minute walk away. Named the “Best in the South” by Zagat Hotel, Resort & Spa Guide, Fairmont Turnberry Isle is Florida’s premier golf, spa and fun destination and was also named World’s Best” by Travel and

Leisure Magazine, and received the Forbes Four Star Hotel & Spa Award, along with Meetings & Conventions Gold Key Award in 2009 and Gold Tee Award in 2010.” Pretty impressive credentials, no? A visit to the Fairmont Turnberry Isle was a surprise birthday present for my wife, Prudy, who was recuperating from recent shoulder surgery. I knew up front that there was no way she would be swinging a golf club with me. I wanted her to have a great time but I also wanted to sneak away and play some golf. This seemed to be the kind of place where we could spend quality time together and enjoyable time apart as well. We spent 4 spectacular days and 3 glorious nights at this enchanting, four star resort. Prudy is really in to gardening and the tropical foliage and well landscaped grounds of the 300 acre resort were absolute showstoppers for her. In fact, the place was breathtaking. She loved the warm breeze on our 150 square foot balcony and enjoyed her glass of wine and book while I carefully plotted the following day’s
activities for us. Our balcony offered a stunning vista that included a spectacular, 64 foot waterfall overlooking the 18th green and the pin was just a short 7 iron away. Almost directly below our room we could watch golfers preparing to tee off on the 16th hole. We were so close to the action we could almost see which club they were pulling out of their bag. While we were enjoying our second glass of wine and “chillaxing”, basketball icon Michael Jordan and his foursome teed off on 16th hole just below our feet. And yes Michael sticks out his tongue to the left side of his mouth when he tees off...just like he is playing basketball. The thought that drifted through my mind at that moment was, “Hey, if the Fairmont Turnberry Isle is good enough for Michael Jordan, it’s certainly good enough for me!” Later that evening, Prudy and I enjoyed a quiet, scrumptious dinner at nationally-acclaimed Chef Michael Mina’s “Bourbon Steak.” Our hostess, Megan Clementi, was amazing. She is young, beautiful, and charming.
Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 2
She was even more stunning in her 6 inch heels. It wasn’t until later that I learned that she is a former Miss Florida USA. I’m happy to report that Prudy handled my not-so-subtle drooling with good humor. The next morning Prudy and I started off with a breakfast at the Cascata Grille. It was an amazing feast. We took our time over coffee and tea while we leisurely sampled as much of the morning’s homemade pastries, and fresh mangos, as possible. Afterwards, we were treated to Executive Chef Daniel Buss’s tour of his herb garden, micro orchard and his vegetable patch. Our private excursion of the quarter acre garden, complete with samples of the various fresh herbs and fruits was not only entertaining, it was educational. We never knew there were so many varieties of herbs and spices. Chef Daniel uses these fresh ingredients in his sauces and main dishes, as a unique blend of flavors not found in other restaurants. If you were to indulge yourself with the resort’s Classic Cuban Mojito, you’d taste Chef Daniel’s home grown sugar cane, limes and mint. I knew Prudy would really enjoy the tour, being a gardening fanatic and all, but I was surprised that I found it enjoyable as well. We were accompanied on the tour by Director of Public Relations, Rachel Pinzur. Rachel is a charismatic, virtual fountain of knowledge. We learned more about Fairmont Turnberry Isle in our brief time with her than we could have learned on our own, even if we had the good fortune to stay for a month of Sundays. Rachel took us to the Fairmont Turnberry Isle’s own fountain of youth, otherwise known the exclusive and awarding winning “Willow Stream Spa and Fitness Center.” This 25,000 square foot gem is the soul of the Turnberry. It is a peaceful, sensorial, sanctuary. If you’d like some pampering, you might consider the full service salon for men and women, aromatherapy, a mud wrap, mineral bath, warm massage, body scrub, hot stone therapy, shiatsu massage, golf performance treatment massage, pedicure, manicure, or one of the specialty facials, or one of the other dozens of selections. I thought I’d have to drag Prudy out of the spa kicking and screaming. If you’re Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 2
more into exercise, you won’t be disappointed in the fitness services. Personal training, Pilates, state-of-the-art equipment, spinning, Boot Camp, Ultimate Sculpt and skilled athletic trainers on hand to provide individual assistance will make your fitness experience truly enjoyable. The unparalleled strength, speed and endurance areas of the fitness center are the home training center to 40 NFL draft prospects, and is the largest NFL Combine Program in the country. When I learned that fact, the same old thought drifted through my mind, “If the fitness center is good enough for NFL prospects, it is good enough for me.” If the spa is the soul of the Turnberry, then certainly the two 18 hole championship courses (The Miller and The
Stoffer) are the heart of the resort. They were originally designed by Robert Trent Jones and recently redesigned by Raymond Floyd, who had a $45 million dollar budget and a blank canvas. His goal was to make them aesthetic, challenging and a fair test for all levels of golfers. Indeed, he exceeded his wildest dreams. The fairways are lined with tropical flora and fauna which create a tropical green belt between fairways. The players have a sense of peaceful serenity while playing on courses that are suited for the skill level of all players. This tropical paradise is an oasis in the midst of a bustling urban community. Both courses have an abundance of water features that challenge the golfer and fine tunes their golf management. At the same time, a famous Audubon-sanctioned bird sanctuary is nestled within the course. The unique elevations on both courses were created by the addition of 700,000 cubic meters of sub soil that
were trucked in. The courses are also defended by challenging greens that are meticulously maintained by a veritable army of greens keepers. Turnberry has hosted NBC/ADT Skills Challenge, and the Stanford International Pro-Am which was an official LPGA event. The Stoffer course is most challenging at 7,047 yards at a par 71 with a course rating of 74.9. It has a slope rating of 149. The Miller course is a par 70 at 6,419 yards and has a course rating of 72 and a slope rating of 143. Swimming at Turnberry is simply a matter of great choices. The resort has 4 water features, if you count the Atlantic Ocean. The Ocean Club is just minutes from Turnberry by free shuttle. While at the Ocean Club, you can enjoy the beach with your chaise lounge and umbrella. When you have had your fill of salt water, you can find your own private spot in a cabana by your fresh water pool. At the main resort, the most popular spot is the Lagoon Pool. It features a zero depth entry and it has a humongous 35 foot high water slide that winds 180 feet in length to deposit you into a gigantic warm fresh water pool. It features pool side services for food and drinks. If you want privacy, cabanas are available with your own flat screen TV. Alongside the pool is a gently curving “lazy river” filled with all sorts of floating devices to enjoy the current with. Kids and adults can tour the lush landscape at a leisurely pace as they float in peaceful bliss. We couldn’t pass up the lazy river or the winding water slide. After that fun, we retired to the cabana to relax in tranquility. The 4 new and improved clay-hydro tennis courts are lighted and enjoy the attention of many famous players who stop by to play. In fact, tennis legend, Fred Stolle, is known to drop by on the men’s night in season. He also conducts an occasional fantasy weekend and is the resort’s tennis ambassador. If you want to be pampered and challenged at the same time, Turnberry is the place to go. With its luxurious setting, friendly and courteous staff, virtual smorgasbord of sports/fitness activities to choose from, phenomenal dining and opportunities to ensure a fun vacation for both the golfer and non-golfer alike, it’s a place you can’t beat. 35

RTJ Golf Trail Makes Improvements Along Mobile Bay It
has become popular in recent years to refer to Alabama’s Gulf Coast as the state’s “Golf Coast.’’ The reference is both descriptive and accurate. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail has played a huge role in making it so. And the Trail isn’t resting on its already impressive laurels when it comes to its presence along the Gulf Coast. Instead, it is continuing to enhance that presence by improving its facilities and amenities and providing not only world-class golf experiences, but adding to the overall quality of life available to residents and guests of the area. “Honestly, all I can say is there is no more important part of the Trail than there is down south,’’ John Cannon, president of Sunbelt Golf Corporation, which oversees the operation of the RTJ Golf Trail, said. “I hesitate to say there’s something more important, that Lakewood and Magnolia Grove are more important than other parts, but we see the tremendous potential they possess.’’
38
Cannon said the City of Mobile and its surrounding areas has become an important area for the Retirement Systems of Alabama, the entity having invested heavily in the area, including the building downtown on Water Street of the RSA Tower. “We look at what we can do to bring people back to the Gulf Coast,’’ Cannon said. “Everyone understands we believe in the future of the Gulf Coast and we believe in the City of Mobile and its surrounding areas itself. We think we can have a
tremendous impact in furthering the success of all business in that area, and that’s what the Trail is meant to do. “The Trail, yes, is a string of golf courses, but the key to the Trail’s success is economic development and tourism. That’s what we’re here to do. We do it through golf, we do it through hotels and the other assets of the RSA. But if we’re not bringing new people to the Gulf Coast, we’re not doing our job and that requires constant attention to our facilities and constant upgrading. If you’ve stayed at one of the RSA hotels, you know we’re not standing still. We’re giving people a world-class experience and a reason to tell their friends what we’re about and what they’ve experienced. The facilities are great, the Southern hospitality is great. I don’t know another organization in our industry that is so committed to the overall health of the local economy in each of the areas that we’re in.’’ Magnolia Grove, Mobile’s stop on the RTJ Golf Trail, features two 18-hole courses, The Crossings and The Falls, as well as a par-3 Dogwood #11 Short Course that has been rated Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 2
the best in the country. The Crossings Course, home of the Avnet LPGA Classic, was renovated from 2008-09 and The Falls Course reopened in 2010 after a 10-month renovation. Both courses underwent extensive changes and improvements in a variety of areas. The practice range and putting green were also improved. “Basically, it’s part of the long-term capitol plan of the Trail,’’ Cannon said. “Being as we built virtually everything at the original seven sites at one time, they are aging at the same time as well. What we want is to ensure that in the long term we have the best possible facilities for all of our golfers. The quality that we have committed to from the very beginning will always be there. We’ve also modified some of the original designs. They’re what I would call more flexible designs. In other words, the average player can find more enjoyment playing them on a regular basis and by use of hole location, green speed and firmness, and rough, we can for specific events and/or customers, make the golf course as demanding as it always has been. That ensures the longevity of the facilities as a business and the on-going guest satisfaction.’’ That same approach was put in place at Lakewood Golf Club, with the Azalea and Magnolia courses redesigned and improved in recent years. Recently, more accessibility to Lakewood for nonGrand Hotel guests and non-members has added to the appeal of the RTJ Golf Trail member facility. “For the long-tern health of Lakewood and the club itself, what we try to do is partition the two 18-hole golf courses,’’ Cannon said. “On
Harbor at Grand Hotel a daily basis one of those courses is for members only; we have a very significant and active membership there. We will also ensure that every day, with two courses open, we have one course for the members every day and they have access to the other golf courses, but we’ll book hotel guests there and public play there (on the other course) that helps us bring more people to the Gulf Coast. “We can use Magnolia Grove and Lakewood together now as a golf
two courses off four 18-hole courses and a demanding 18-hole par-3 course – a week’s worth of play. “You’re always proud of what you’re trying to accomplish, in good times and bad,’’ Cannon said. “What we know, with the RSA’s commitment, we’re always going to be proud of our facilities, and when we make mistakes they’re honest and they’re mistakes we make always with our guests in mind. We try to give them more than they believe they’re paying for and we think that’s what makes us one of the world’s great golf destinations. “We’ve already seen increased traffic to Magnolia Grove and to the hotels downtown to play the facility. A lot of that can be credited to word of mouth. I played golf with LPGA star Suzann Pettersen. She said, “I love what you’ve done with the golf course at Magnolia Grove, it’s fantastic, it’s so much better.’ Those are the people who have so much influence. We’re keeping those people in mind as well as the 18-handicapper in what we’re doing. That is not going to change. Every conversation helps us. We’re getting through. What I read in the newspaper is that consumer confidence is getting better and with that, the golf business will get better. We’re still a profitable enterprise. Golf is a completely discretionary purchase for everybody who plays the game. When we make it something where people really want to spend their discretionary income on, and they do, we’re going to be successful.’’ If nothing else, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail -- whether along the “Golf Coast’’ or any of its other locations – has been a huge success, from the beginning and today. For more on the Trail and its resorts, visit www.rtjgolf.com.
We try to give them more than they believe they’re paying for and we think that’s what makes us one of the world’s great golf destinations. destination. We’ve already seen some incremental increase into the area since we’ve opened up the ability for them to play 18 holes at Lakewood. They could play Dogwood today and Azalea tomorrow, that’s why we flip them daily, so it opens up both courses to the public.’’ That gameplan provides a string of quality golf opportunities, challenges and experiences at the RTJ Golf Trail sites in the Mobile area, not only for visitors to the area but for local golfers too. Close up of the typical aerifying holes and cores.
“Hole-y” Greens Batman! As
the busy winter and spring golf season winds down it is time for superintendents to crank up the aerification equipment and punch holes in those greens. It is the annual rite of late spring that golfers hate and superintendents endure because they know golfers hate to see those holes in the green. Just we’re getting all hyped up over the horticultural perfection of the immortal Augusta National and the Masters Tournament, our mere mortal courses sprout polka-dot, sand filled holes. Doesn’t seem right does it? Pssst, I’ll let you in on a little secret.
Augusta National is closed about five months from May thru September and that’s when they do all that renovation stuff. If you were to take a peek at the Masters course in July, you might not believe your eyes. Most golf courses have to squeeze the seasonal maintenance into a few days or a week and so you see the aftermath and the healing, grow-in process. All courses go through it and for the most part there is no avoiding it. The reason is that managing golf course playing surfaces is different than most agriculture, but the same

basic principles of cultivation and renewal are required. We don’t plow the greens under after “harvest” in our case after the spring member-guest tournaments, but we do punch holes, remove thatch and add topdressing. There are several basic agronomic reasons for doing regular “cultivation” on our courses. • Relieve compaction from all that winter traffic so your approach shots “bite.” • Improve water infiltration to avoid ponding and algae formation. • Open up pore space in the root zone for roots to get oxygen. • Allow nutrients to get to the turf roots. • Remove excess organic material from the roots zone to avoid spongy greens. Aerification equipment improvements and research into the aerification process are allowing more superintendents to use smaller diameter coring tines to make the holes smaller and faster healing. This option is not universal and depends on the soil type, greens construction and resources at each individual course. Some courses are actually aerifying more often but are using smaller hollow tines, or are using solid tines and not pulling the cores. These changes in methodology are being evaluated all the time to speed up the recovery time and minimize the disruption to the putting surfaces. By the way Tom Watson once reportedly shot a casual golf round score in the high 50’s or low 60’s on a newly aerified course. Best to think of spring renovation to your greens like a home improvement project, you hate to go through it while it’s happening, but you love the results when it’s finished. Golf is his game! Seventy five year old, golf TV personality and author, Ron Heller might be the first senior golfer of his age to score a hole-in-one and shoot his age in the same round. Ron’s 75 was shot at Huntington Hills GC in Lakeland where he scored a dramatic ace on the 14th hole, a par 3 playing to 174 yards. No “fooling”, the ace came on April 1st (4/1/11) and the club of choice was a 4 iron. This is Ron’s 3rd career hole-in-one. Wayne Kappauf CGCS, from the Island CC on Marco Island was nominated for a 2011 FGCSA Presidents Award for his service to the Everglades GCSA.

My Top Five Favorite Golf Courses F
rom coast to coast in America, golfers are blessed with excellent choices to play at unique golf courses. They range from the PGA West, the western home of golf in America, to the east coast’s TPC Sawgrass, where every year the “best of the best” PGA players come to compete against each other. I have been fortunate to have been able to play many of the top-named courses in the world. In this month’s column, I will share my thoughts about my top five favorite golf courses. My fifth favorite course is located along the coast of Scotland. Crail Golf Club is the seventh oldest Golf Club in the world. It has two links courses that feature stunning views of the sea and are amazing to play. Every fairway is lined with bushes, which means that if you are not an accurate player, then Crail might not be your type of course. I visited this piece of heaven when I played in the Euro Cup during the summers of 2008, 2009, and 2010. I have never seen a more gorgeous setting for golf. My number four pick is TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. This course is home to the Players Championship. Some people also call it, ‘’The Fifth Major in Golf.” What I like about this course is that it features a long and narrow fairway which can challenge even the best professional golfers. When you complete your round, you can visit any of the nearby tourist attractions. Personally, I like to go to the beach to cool off after playing golf. If you are looking for a family getaway, TPC Sawgrass and its surrounding attractions offer unique adventures for golfers of all ages as well as their families. There is no doubt in my mind that Reynolds Plantation Golf Courses in Greensboro, Georgia is my third favorite golf destination. It is located by Lake Oconee, the second largest lake in Georgia. Alongside the lake

there are 117 holes of majestic golf at Reynolds Plantation. There have been many big name tournaments at this venue, including the Georgia Open. This is the perfect place for a person to improve upon their game. I have a lot of great memories of Reynolds Plantation, including my first holein-one. That was a day I will never forget! For my number two, it would be Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines. Harbour Town is the host course to the Heritage Golf Tournament and is one of the finest courses the south has to offer. Located on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, it has a history of its own and provides a great family getaway. The course is famous for its par four 18th hole, which is nestled along the ocean, and has a good view of the famous lighthouse. If you were to play there, I guarantee you would have great memories and would want to go back. Finally, my number one course would be none other than my home track, PGA West. I absolutely love everything about it. There are six championship golf courses that will test all skill levels for golfers. I have the honor of practicing here every day. Playing golf on these courses is truly a slice of heaven. I had my lowest round on the Jack Nicklaus Private course (65). If you are looking to do more than play golf, La Quinta, California has some of the best restaurants in the world to enjoy. Wherever you live or wherever you decide to travel, it’s always fun to seek out new courses. Trying something new can be exciting and create opportunities to improve your game by offering a mental and/ or physical challenge. Plus, you can check out the local attractions to get a real feel for the area and its customs. You never know, you may just find a course to make your own top 5 list. Tito's Handmade Vodka Tito’s Handmade Vodka is produced in Austin at Texas’ first and oldest legal distillery. It’s made in small batches in an old fashioned pot still by Tito Beveridge (actual name), a 40-something Geologist, and distilled six times. Tito’s Handmade Vodka is designed to be savored by spirit connoisseurs and everyday drinkers alike. It is microdistilled in an old-fashioned pot still, just like fine single malt scotches and high-end French cognacs. This time-honored method of distillation requires more skill and effort than modern column stills, but it’s well worth it. www.titosvodka.com

Stand Taller for Posture Month M
ay is National Correct Posture Month, and it seems mom was even right about standing up straight. From athletes like Soul Surfer Bethany Hamilton work with a postural alignment therapist to the thousands of people with back pain and muscle aches being helped by Certified Posture Exercise Professionals, strengthening posture is important. Improving your posture is not just about looking good. Studies show people with better posture really are healthier and actually live longer. From kids with backpacks or cane-carrying seniors--studies show poor posture is a major cause of back and neck pain for all ages, and over time often contributes to digestive and cardio-pulmonary problems. Here’s three things to help keep you standing tall- Take an a posture picture, do posture strengthening exercise and have smart posture habits.
1. Take an Annual posture picture to set the benchmark for YOUR body. Ask a friend to take your picture from the front, back and side.
line, you may have a posture distortion called Forward Head Posture (FHP) File your posture picture and compare it to a new one next year.
2. D0 Posture Strengthening Exercises to maximize the benefit of any workout, or as a beginning exercise to get in shape. Yoga, Tai-Chi and Pilates are all great for building body awareness and control, along with the new StrongPosture™ exercise programs from Dr. Steven Weiniger, author of the book Stand Taller~Live Longer, An Anti-Aging Strategy: 10 Minutes a Day to Keep Your Body Active and Pain-Free. The first StrongPosture exercises Dr. Weiniger recommends are the Stork for strengthening balance and WallStand to strengthen alignment. Best Posture STORK: Train yourself to stand tall while building good posture by balancing on one foot. First, stand tall with your best posture, and then focus on staying tall and straight as you lift your thigh so your knee is at hip height. Keep stand-
ing tall for 30 seconds on each side, focusing on keeping your body well aligned. Vertical WALLSTAND: Back up to a wall so your heels, buttocks, shoulders and head all lightly touch the wall while you keep everything level, relaxed and aligned-- and take 3 slow breaths, feeling your body’s best posture. Note: If you feel any areas of stress, get your posture checked by a professional.
3. Choose Smart Posture Habits Get a good chair, and change it’s position during the day. If you’re going to play videogames, exercise more than your thumbs with games with one that makes you move such as the the motion sensing Nintendo Wii or Xbox Kinect. Invest in quality shoes, and
Print them out, one to a sheet, and look at your body symmetry. Just comparing posture pictures from year to year can be eye-opening. You can assess your alignment by putting a dot between your feet on the front and back view, and at your ankle on the side view. Then, fold each paper in half neatly at the dot. FRONT & BACK VIEW: The two halves of your body should be the same. If your head and/or torso is off to one side, or your arms are hanging differently, your posture is not symmetrical. SIDE VIEW: The line from your ankle should pass thru your shoulder and ear. If your head is way forward of that 46

consider using a shoe insert or orthotic, especially if you’ve had foot problems. If you have back pain, neck soreness, or other posture problem--- or want to find out how strengthening your posture can improve sports performance (ie golf, tennis, baseball) and wellness-help is available. Consult a Certified Posture Exercise Professional or other chiropractor, PT or massage therapists trained to analyze posture pictures and teach individualized posture exercise routines for pain management and wellness. Your posture is how the world sees you, and a bit of effort at strengthening your posture is an anti-aging habit to make you look and feel better, avoid injury and exercise effectively to stay active and age well. Dr. Steven Weiniger, internationally recognized expert on posture and antiaging, is author of Stand Taller~Live Longer. He is also senior editor of BodyZone. com, and online wellness resource which offers a national directory for C.P.E.P.s (Certified Posture Exercise Professional) and other posture professionals.

Duffer Dan at Club Med Sandpiper Bay In
1950 two enterprising gentlemen opened a resort village in Spain as an all-inclusive vacation concept called Club Mediterranean. After 60 years of providing outstanding entertaining places to vacation, Club Med is now in 36 countries with 80 unique villages. The only all-inclusive family resort Club Med in the U.S. is right here in Florida, in the town of Port St. Lucie, about 30 minutes north of Palm Beach. Club Med Sandpiper Bay just reopened in December 2010 after a $25 million transformation, redefining the prestigious country club atmosphere. Renovations included newly designed accommodations including new deluxe family rooms, totally new child oriented recreational programs, and innovative facilities such as a Kidz Village including a water splash park, a new teens-only lounge, a circus school and BRITTO art center for children. Sandpiper Bay offers exciting age specific programs for babies(4 months) to 17 year olds. Children will be inspired by fun activities such as Le Petite Chef cooking lessons, sailing, Zumbatonic,

and tennis, golf and fitness academies. And at night parents can enjoy time alone together using the Pyjama Club childcare service. Activities go on all day for both young and old. You can do as much or as little as you care to. On my visit there this spring I witnessed a wonderful team of enthusiastic folks , managed by our gracious host Lionel Pirotte, making sure everyone’s Club Med experience was the best possible. Since it was my first time, I wanted to try as many different activities as I could. It would be wise to take the tour when you get there, so you know where the activities are during the course of the day. Sandpiper Bay is a sprawling 216 acre compound situated on the beautiful St Lucie River. The recreational programs for adults are just as varied as the children’s. The tennis facility was one of the projects completed early on and rightly so. They have two world renowned coaches in Scott Del Mastro and Gabe Jaramillo(Andre Agassi and Monica Seles are just 2 of the26 top ten players in the world he has taught). With over
20 new courts, a training facility, new 12,000 foot clubhouse and pro shop and living quarters for full time students, The Club Med Tennis Academy offers multi-level training programs ideal for beginners and competitive athletes alike. Considering how poorly I play golf at times , I thought I couldn’t be any worse at tennis. I was wrong. The highlight of my tennis experience was the exhibitions between the students, the instructors , and one afternoon retired professional Mikael Penfors imitating some of the great stars of tennis with his own volley of trick shots. The first night I was wowed by the Cirque Show in the theatre. The professional athletes perform a dazzling show, then during the day teach juggling, trampoline, aerial gymnastics and trapeze to young and old. If you master the beginner level you can advance to greater levels of expertise including the flips to the catcher on the high trapeze. The cowardly Duffer just watched the bodies flying with the greatest of ease. During the day you can pick up a game of basketball, beach Florida Golf Central • Volume 12, Issue 2
volleyball or soccer. There is kayaking, sailing and jet skiing available along the waterfront plus different river tours from the deep water dock to suit your fancy. Remember, in the winter time the manatees come up river to find warm water, which is a sight to see. I just wonder how bad the old seamen’s eyesight was and how they mistook them for mermaids. Fitness- Something the Duffer tries to avoid at all costs. Who wants to spoil an all inclusive vacation with a workout. I got tired just sampling the international cuisine at The Marketplace buffet and fine offerings at Soleil, the waterfront café, not to mention the free drinks at Slice Bar & Lounge. Besides the Power Walk and Running in the morning, Cardio Fusion, Cardio Splash, Zumba, and Boot Camp are some of the options offered every day. The state of the art 15,000 square foot wellness center is fully equipped with the latest work out equipment. My favorite activities were the yoga and meditation classes along with the adult only infinity pool tucked away on the river’s edge. I enjoyed a nutritional cooking class conducted by Executive Chef Christian and Heather Gollnick. The last night, we were treated

to a private wine sampling by the Club Med Sommelier and introduced to new tastes from all over the world. Well, enough of how great it is to be the Duffer and the many perks received. Golf at Club Med Sandpiper Bay is going to be changing, starting in June. Some of the things I can tell you for sure. Brad Brewer who operates a golf academy at Shingle Creek in Orlando and has recently written a great read “Mentored by the King”, has been asked to open the Club Med Golf Academy with PGA
Teaching Professional Don Law when the new golf building is complete. The golf course will be redone and the practice facilities expanded dramatically. While I was there I took lessons 3 days and the instruction was fabulous. I played with Brad and head professional David and know with their high energy and commitment to courteous service , golf at Club Med is going to be a must stay and play. Latino Leadership’s premiere event empowers families, students
G
olfers supporting Latino Leadership’s education initiatives competed for prizes and bragging rights during the fourth annual LATINO OPEN golf tournament on May 6 at the Reunion Resort and Club in Orlando, Florida. As the major fundraiser for Latino Leadership’s network of education programs and services, this year’s tournament was a smashing success. Netted funds will help provide complimentary admission and school supplies to the more than 200 parents and students that participate in the Southeast Regional Latino Family Conference. “The Southeast Regional Latino Family Conference brings together parents, students, and educators to speak about the choices we make in life and their impact on the future. This year’s theme is It’s Choice Not Chance That Determines Your Future. “We want all individuals who participate in the conference to know they are the main decision-maker for their future,” said Marytza Sanz, Latino Leadership’s President/CEO. “This fundraiser will help ensure these activities continue,” Sanz added. This year’s golf tournament would not have been possible if not for the support from GM/ Cadillac, Wal-Mart, Brugal Rums, Presidente Beer, Coca-Cola, My Golf Concierge, Resource Employment

Summer Program Fits Golfers To a Tee U nlimited golf and a spectacular environmental setting make Bonita Bay East’s Summer Passport Program one of Southwest Florida’s best golf deals. Located in North Naples, the 1,400-acre pure golf facility features two award-winning Tom Faziodesigned championship courses. The nonresidential golf facility has been one of the region’s most sought-after golf experiences since it opened as a private club in 1997. For $600 per person, the Summer Passport Program includes unlimited play on both courses from May 1 through Oct. 31, 2011, and a cart fee of only $25 per person. The extraordinary program includes use of the practice facility prior to scheduled tee times. Players also receive use of the 8,000-square-foot clubhouse, dining
room, mixed grille and bar. “For as little as $100 per month, golfers may take advantage of the slower summer months which are ideal for firsttimers as well as more seasoned golfers” said Ian Coleman, director of golf sales at Bonita Bay East. “The two Bonita Bay East courses offer one of the
area’s few pure golf experiences with no residential development.” The Cypress is an impressive 5,999 to 7,077-yard course. The longest Bonita Bay East championship course with the front nine featuring spacious fairways and natural bunkering that gives way to the forested back nine’s layout. The 6,029 to 7,038-yard Sabal course mingles difficulty and diversion which delights novice golfers while experienced players are challenged to swing for the pin with sub-par scores on nearly every hole. The two Bonita Bay East courses wind through open areas, marsh and woodland and past cypress stands where players often see wild turkey, marsh birds, rabbits and white tailed deer. It was the first 36-hole facility in the world to achieve Audubon International Signature Sanctuary status. Bonita Bay East’s site includes 895 acres of cypress wetlands, 190 acres of pine flats, lakes and hundreds of native sabal palms. Bonita Bay received the 1999 Golf Digest Environmental Leader in Golf Award from Golf Digest and the National Environmental Steward Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and was included among Travel + Leisure Golf’s

Become a 6 Handicap in 5 Sessions G olfers looking to lower their handicap and improve their game have a new Golf Fitness program at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, the only Resort and one of just a few clubs in South Florida to offer this program. In one or more three-hour sessions with Assistant Golf Professional Jason Becker, he’ll add the power of exercise physiology to a highly personalized review of your game to help strengthen your body and improve your swing. “Golf Fitness is the latest trend on the professional golf circuit: have
66
you noticed how many PGA Tour players are now accompanied by personal trainers? This approach goes beyond simple pregame stretches with a golf club to help you work on particular areas of your body that will make a big difference in how you play,” said Becker, one of just 100 golf professionals and personal trainers certified by the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) in a program that targets six cities annually. “The beauty is that Golf Fitness isn’t limited to pros. I’ve personally seen a recreational player with an
18-handicap become a ‘6’ in just five sessions. Partnering specialized golf instruction with targeted fitness is the key and I coordinate with Katia Lotay, one of the personal trainers in our fitness center. She is also TPI certified and conducts follow-up with Golf Fitness participants who want added focus on specific exercises and conditioning.” The highly customized Golf Fitness program can fit into any length of Resort stay. Becker conducts a detailed interview to review your personal history and golf experience, including discussion of any injuries, and then evaluates your game, beginning with your swing. Do you slice the ball, hook it or top it? Each of these indicates areas of the body that can benefit from specific fitness routines. For example, if your hamstrings and glutes are not strong enough, your swing will likely come up to top the ball. Becker will then recommend a very personalized exercise regimen to strengthen muscle groups to make a noticeable improvement in your game, drawing on his exclusive access to the most extensive collection of golf-specific health and fitness information in the TPI database. To reserve a golf-centric stay at Boca Resort, such as The Unlimited Golf Package with the opportunity to play the resort›s two award-winning 18-hole championship courses as much as you wish, call your travel professional or call 888-543-1286, or visit www.BocaResort.com or www.waldorfastoriacollection.com.

Increase your power and range of motion with proper stretching
N
ews flash for golfers: if you are not stretching before you play golf or practice, then you should start as soon as possible! Most Tour Pros spend about 15-20 minutes practicing these stretching techniques prior to his or her round. Why is it so important to stretch before playing? It increases your power and your range of motion. It will loosen up those stiff muscles prior to playing a game. Most importantly, it can prevent those annoying pains and injuries that so many players have to face on a regular basis. Not only is stretching good for golf, but stretching is vital to a healthy life! Having limber muscles can increase your longevity and stamina, while giving you the physical ability to perform a balanced golf swing. Here are some stretches you can do before you play or practice: Middle body rotation: Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Hold a golf club on your shoulders, place forearms on each end of the club. Slightly bend knees and lean forward, then swing body so that each end of the club is right before you at each turn. Repeat swings 15 times. Toe Touch: Stand with feet spread apart as far as you can without feeling uncomfortable. Stretch forward as if to reach one foot, as far as is comfortable, then do the same for the other foot with the opposite hand. So if touching right toe, use left hand, etc. Make this a continuous movement and do it for about 20 seconds (do not perform this stretch if you have back pain!) Wrist Extension: Stand straight and extend your right arm out in front of you. Use your left hand to pull back your right fingers towards you until you feel a stretch. Hold this stretch for 10 seconds and repeat 2 times for each wrist.
Weighted Club Swings: Use a weighted club and swing 10 times without stopping for each swing. Make these motions continuous. Arm swing: Hold arms out straight while standing up straight. Swing your arms across your front, repeat this move for about 30 seconds. Side Bend: Stand with feet shoulder distance apart. Place the golf club on your shoulders once again. Lean to either the left or right side while keeping back straight. Hold this position for 2 seconds and then lean to the other side. Repeat 10 times for each side. Shoulder Stretch: Stand with feet shoulder width apart and place both your hands at the end of an upright club. Lean forward, but keep your back flat, stop when you feel a stretch in your shoulders. Hold position for 10 seconds Repeat 3 times. Leg Swing: Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Stand up straight and swing one leg forwards and backwards, keeping your upper body and other leg still. Repeat 10 times for each leg.

➌ Loudmouth Golf ➋ One For The Ages Jack Nicklaus and the 1986 Masters by Tom Clavin Jack
It is another spring day in Augusta with the dogwoods and azaleas in full bloom. Driving up Magnolia Lane the players are getting ready to test Augusta National to see who can go home with a green jacket at the end. Since its inception in 1934, the Masters has provided some of the most memorable finishes, but none so improbable and unforgettable as Jack Nicklaus’ triumph at age 46. The Golden Bear was shining in the limelight with his eldest son, Jackie on the bag. Tom Clavin, the author of ‘One For The Ages’ relives the extraordinary achievement of a quarter century ago with tidbits of historical facts from different angles and brings you front and center with the cheering crowds of 1986 as Jack captures his sixth Masters in 1986. For anyone who loves golf it is a must read.

➍ Adams Golf – Redline Hybrid-Iron Sets Continuing a long tradition of delivering innovative club design, Adams Golf is proud to announce the launch of the new Redline series of industryleading hybrid-iron sets. Adams Golf has combined their longest-hitting irons with their longest-hitting hybrids to create a customizable set that delivers maximum yardage. Designed with distance as the primary goal, consumers have the option of choosing which set configuration will best fit their game, including choosing whether to play one, two or three hybrids in combination with the long-hitting irons. By combining a larger hybrid head, an ultra-thin steel face and longer shaft length, the Redline Super Hybrids deliver faster ball speeds and more distance than traditional hybrids. A tri-level sole design reduces turf interference for ease of play from the tee, fairway or rough and 45 grams of mass placed low and back improves forgiveness. The eight-piece sets began shipping to golf shops April 20 with a suggested retail price (SRP) of $899.99 for graphite and $799.99 for steel. The stock shaft for the Redline hybrids and the irons in the graphite set is the UST Mamiya ATTAS-T2 graphite shaft. For the steel set, the stock shaft for the irons is the Redline Performance 85. All Redline irons and hybrids are available in right- or left-handed models with shaft flexes of X, R, S or A. 70

PURE GOLF Black Bear Golf Club is a quintessential P.B. Dye designed championship links course stretching over 7,000 yards. It is truly a fun test for golfers of all skill levels. Unlike most typically flat Florida courses Black Bear presents a unique challenge with its undulating fairways, elevation changes and fast, well manicured greens. The course has some of the most dramatic bunkers you will ever experience in Florida as well as some of the biggest elevation changes. P.B. Dye lived up to his reputation as a designer of championship courses when he built Black Bear. The focus at Black Bear is pure golf. The club boasts one of the best practice facilities in Central Florida. With a double ended 400 yard range, 40,000 square foot short game complex, 6,000 square foot practice green and 19th hole - shoot out hole, Black Bear is the place to be if you want to improve your game. Shaun Webb, Hank Haney certified golf instructor makes Black Bear his home. Black Bear hosts several professional tour events annually as well as being home to select PGA and LPGA players. Play a tournament quality championship course for $50 or less and rub shoulders with a few LPGA or PGA pros. That’s nearly impossible anywhere else in the Orlando area. Black Bear Golf Course is about a 30 minute drive north of downtown Orlando. The course is set in Florida ranch country. The drive from the city is easy and relaxing. It is more than worth the few extra minutes drive both for the golf experience as well as the great value offered.
