You’re Welcome! If you are one of our admirable readers you are a familiar with and understand why I am so thankful for all the people the magazine attracts. I for one want to know when I’m welcome, all the time, everywhere. Continuing to be welcomed into this industry with so much support over the years is something I am forever grateful for. We have been welcomed to so many amazing places and taken part in great events. Events that are mostly charitable golf tournaments, planned for people in need of support, based on having fun playing a game with others who welcome the chance to give. One of the most fantastic charity events we have been invited to cover over the years is the Children’s Miracle Network Classic Pro-Am. This is an incredible tournament held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports each year to raise funds and awareness to children and families in need of medical attention, along with financial and emotional support. Not only have we been welcomed as press each year, but the fabulous Qualkenbushes have been charitable enough to let us present the tournament on our cover every year! Thank you Qualkenbushes for allowing us to welcome golf for a cause to the community the way it should be. One of our goals has been creating a relaxed generous feel for the readers, advertisers and most importantly newcomers to the game. We welcome the chance to spread the word and, create excitement, or awareness for anyone who has their heart in the right place. We welcome you to do the same by getting out and golf! Bring friends and family and spread the love of the game. Golf Datatech, the golf industry’s leading independent research firm for consumer, trade and retail golf trends, announced that rounds played in 2012 have increased significantly and are trending towards record high levels for the year! Now is an exciting time to get more involved in the game we all love, and there are plenty of ways to do it. You are welcome to come out--regardless of your golf level--for Get Golf Ready with Robin Meade at any participating course to spread the love of the game (see Robin Meade article for more info). With the holidays quickly approaching, there are tons of gift ideas that support the game as well. Consider getting the golfer in your family a Florida Golf license plate. Proceeds go to the Florida Junior Golf Council (FJGC), which helps Florida’s youth by introducing them to golf. It also shows your support to an industry that supports commerce in Florida via golf year round, an industry that produces tourist and creates jobs, as well as supports many charities. We also welcome you to play in or volunteer for a charity golf tournament. Players have the opportunity to raise money for great causes such as the Salvation Army Tournament for Super Storm Sandy victims. Our team at Florida Golf Central is forever growing and learning, so we welcome all suggestions, input, and ideas! We love hearing from our devoted readers, so please feel welcome to give feedback. On behalf of the staff at Florida Golf Central, we hope everyone enjoys this holiday season and plays lots of golf!

Holiday Gift Guide ➊ Polara Golf Anti-Slice Golf Balls

➋ Swedge Fix Your Slice with the Swedge The Swedge Swing Training Aid is recommended by Top Golf Instructors and was voted “Best Product of 2012” by the International Network of Golf. It corrects the dreaded swing flaw called the “flying elbow” or ”chicken wing” that plagues so many mid to high handicap golfers. With the Swedge, you’ll focus on keeping your right arm in the proper position, correcting several swing flaws simultaneously. It helps eliminate your hook or slice, keeps you connected throughout your swing, improves your accuracy, and increases your power and distance. It’s one of the simplest and most effective training aids on the market. Available in Black, Red and Blue. The Swedge is available at all 85 Golfsmith locations nationwide and online at www.Golfsmith.com and www.AvidGolfusa.com. Special Holiday Price – Now Only $19.95

Polara Golf has finally introduced what recreational golfers all over the world have been looking for - a quick fix for their game! While other golf ball manufacturers “claim” to improve accuracy or reduce your hook or slice, the unique asymmetrical dimple design of the Polara Anti-Slice golf ball actually does it! These golf balls turn your hooks and slices into longer, straighter shots. Now even recreational golfers can play from the fairway instead of the rough, the woods, or the next fairway over. Using Polara golf balls is guaranteed to improve your game, increase your accuracy and lower your golf score, which makes the game more fun. Polara Golf offers four different anti-slice golf balls - the original Ultimate Straight and Ultimate Straight XS (reduces hooks & slices up to 75%) and the new XD and XDS (with up to 50% correction and Extra Distance). Polara golf balls are available at golf retailers nationwide and at www.PolaraGolf.com - $24.95 to $34.95 per dozen.

➌ Nexbelt Nexbelt, "The Belt Without Holes", recently added to their arsenal of innovative ratchet design belts. The Go-In! Golf series belt, provides golfers with maximum comfort and minimum adjustment hassle by allowing the wearer an adjustment pattern of 1/4 inch as opposed to the outdated pin/buckle belts of 1 inch. Traditional belts of the past century are uncomfortable, and due to their pin/buckle design have a tendency to wear quickly and unevenly. As the wearers waistline changes, it necessitates the creation of unsightly holes in an often uneven manner. Nexbelt gives consumers a fashionable streamline appearance while supplying a practical solution to an uncomfortable problem. Allowing the golfer a reduction of up to 15 waist sizes with the same belt, and the forgiveness of a few inches following a hearty meal, PreciseFit Technology provides wearers with a natural feel and more comfortable golf swing. The Go-In! Golf series not only gives golfers the precision comfort of PreciseFit Technology, but also the convenience of a hidden ball marker conveniently located behind the face of the belt. The belts are available in a variety of colors and buckle combinations for both Men and Women and fit waist sizes ranging from 28” to 50”. Starting at just $54.99, Nexbelt is the best fitting most economical belt on the market today. Available at www.NexBelt.com. 8

➎ UNCONSCIOUS SCORING

by Dave Stockton

Dave Stockton Sr. is an 11-time winner on the PGA Tour, 14 times on the Champions Tour and is widely known as one of the pre-eminent putting and short game gurus in the golf industry. In his best-selling book, Unconscious Putting, the renowned instructor and two-time former PGA Champion introduced to amateur players the techniques, strategies and mental processes he has used to help tour players find so much success on the green. Now, in Unconscious Scoring, Stockton will complete that short game education by teaching readers how to make the most of shots around the green. The key to Stockton’s remarkable instruction success is its simplicity, and in Unconscious Scoring, he breaks down the short game into two components—low shots and high shots—explaining both the technique and the context of how and when the shots should be used. Players will learn to let the left hand control the swing on low greenside shots—an extension of the putting technique Stockton shares in his first book—and transition to a right-handdominated swing on high shots, sand shots and trouble shots. Autographed Copy $37.95 is available at www.StocktonGolf.com.

golf bachelor

Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I’m a Georgia boy at heart, but love the Florida lifestyle. I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA through High School. I did my undergraduate degree in Tampa, and my graduate degree in Orlando, FL. What is your heritage?

My dad was born in Jordan and my mom was born in Italy

Is “acting your age” over rated? Yes! Age encompasses two

parts. Age is chronological (time since you were born) and biological (how you feel). I have patients in their 50’s and 60’s that feel better than they did in their 20’s and 30’s. It all depends on how you feel!

What do you do for a living? The general consensus is that I poke people with acupuncture instruments and brew crazy herbs, that I’m a “weeds, beads and seeds doctor.” On the contrary acupuncture is just a portion of what I do. I own my own practice called Acupuncture Fit, Inc. I am a primary care provider and have two locations here in Orlando, FL. Check my company out at www.acupuncturefit.com What would you like to do for a living? Have Anthony

Bourdain’s job, and try foreign cuisine by traveling all over the world.

Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation?

Working out, playing tennis, fishing and going to the young adult group at St. James Catholic Church in downtown Orlando.

Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty?

What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? When they try to play through

an injury, however they usually become my patients

Name the three most important things to you in this world. My faith in God, my family and friends

Given the choice; would you select love, success, or money to keep yourself happy? Let me answer your question with a

question, and then I will give you my answer. Imagine that you are driving your car in the pouring rain and you pass by three people. One is your best friend from middle school, the next an injured elderly woman and then the love of your life. What would you do? Who would you pick up? Well, I would give my best friend the keys to my car to take the elderly woman to the hospital, and then I would go over and be with the love of my life. I would choose love.

Name three prominent people you would like to have dinner with.

Mother Theresa, Mel Gibson, my grandmother (especially if she’s cooking)

Last time you spewed something through your nose from laughing so hard? One of my best friend’s wedding rehearsal dinner

this past July. We had some of the best dinner conversation ever…ya’ll riiiiight!

Last book you read? Wild at Heart Favorite charity to support? Food for the Poor

My sister. She’s beautiful, an amazing mom and my brotherin-law is a lucky man to have married her. He’s pretty awesome too.

Leadership by Choice There are many similarities between the game of golf and everyday leadership skills. Here are three helpful tips that can improve your leadership skills and your next golfing experience.

1. Self Talk. We all know that golf is

much more of a mental game than it is

and not about you or your golf game.

game increase.

Knowing your purpose before you

physical. What we say to ourselves as we golf can impact how well we do and how much fun we have.

Before you step out on the course either the day before or while driving to the course. Tell yourself what you would like to experience and picture it. Example – “It’s going to be a fun day of golf” “I’m going to really enjoy golfing today.” And repeat it several times with emotion. You can even write it down if you like. You’ll be amazed at the result. Some people call this visualizing, setting an intention, etc. You get out of life what you expect. So what do you expect the next time you golf?

2. Dealing with Failure. Just like in life as to in golf there will be some trying times. But how you view and respond to failure makes all the difference. When you see failure as a temporary state in your overall journey, you begin to see what you can learn and apply to reach your goal. Your level of enjoyment of a round of golf with friends and good weather should not be only subjected to how well you hit a small ball in a small hole.

3. Remembering the Purpose. Many folks are attracted to golf because of a charity event, special occasion, or perhaps the camaraderie of friends. If you are attending a charity event that’s not the time to scrutinize every shot you make. Remember it’s for the charity 16

Robyn Meade Explains How To

Our sister network TNT runs PGA. com, and a former team member on the morning show now works with the PGA there. So when he heard they were interested in growing golf specifically to more women – the idea of a morning feature was born, with this nearly unbelievable goal that you can get “golf ready” in a mere five lessons. Come on, five lessons and I’m going to know what I’m doing? I was aware some people spend their entire life playing the game and never really feel ready or that they’re competent at it. Ha! So when the TNT folks approached me to gauge my interest in being the one to take part in a “get golf ready” program, I was like “ya!”, even though I’ve never been on a golf course previously. (Mind

18

you, when I worked in local news in Chicago I LIVED on a golf course but never actually stepped foot on the greens to try my hand with a driver or iron. Funny to think about now). That same former team member is pals with Suzy Whaley through the PGA. Being aware of her stellar history with the sport and her reputation as a fantastic teacher, he somehow got her to fly in to Atlanta and taped her giving a few of the lessons that you might normally get from your local pro for “Get Golf Ready.” But I had Suzy Whaley! First woman to take on the men in the PGA in 58 years! Suzy Whaley, with a powerful swing that would rival most pro men. I mean she’s something else and just top notch. When Suzy

wasn’t around, I had Atlanta Country Club pro Scott Schroeder helping me make lots of baby steps in a very short period of time, to prepare for the Pro Am in Bermuda . Start to finish it was probably about six weeks I’m guessing. I do know this: by the time I arrived for the pro am I had been on a golf course no less than three times. Ever. Funny, when I started the shoot I was like “yeah, of course I’ll go play the pro am at the grand slam of golf, what an opportunity!” but as the few weeks I had to learn the game of golf ticked away, I started getting really stressed about being a newbie with the likes of Suzy Whaley and Bubba Watson AND on camera for my own viewers. My husband claims I was

PGA Vice President Ted Bishop, Ian Baker-Finch, Robin Meade, Bubba Watson, Suzy Whaley and Andy Burrows during the Grand Slam Pro Am at The Port Royal Golf Club for the 30th Grand Slam of Golf on October, 22, 2012 in Southampton, Bermuda. more stressed about this than I ever was jumping out of a plane with former president George H. Bush for his birthday! I just wanted to be a credit to my two pros and not completely embarrass myself on camera. Well flash forward to Bermuda . I’m delighted to learn that pro am is a scramble, best ball. So I felt relieved that I wouldn’t be a horrible detriment to my team members with such a lack of experience. But listen to the line up on my team: 1) Bubba Watson 2) Suzy Whaley 3) Former British Open champ Ian Baker Finch 4) PGA president Ted Bishop 5) local Bermudian player who was a ringer! 6) little ole me. Only thing I could offer these folks, I kept telling them, is my handicap. The max baby! I was scared to death when we started on the first tee box, front and center for the crowd and cameras. “Please connect. Please connect”. My wood and the ball did connect and I could breathe again, and sailed into what was an incredible day and addicting experience! Throughout the 18 holes the crowd was fantastic, cheering us on or moaning at our misses. But for me the experience was invaluable in that every swing I took if I wasn’t happy with the outcome, I got an immediate clinic with like four pros right there on my team. They were all fantastic and gracious and patient. I enjoyed seeing Ian and Suzy in their element as players. Now, for the holes that Bubba joined us, that also meant those were the holes that the cameras were joining us so I could not only golf (as a complete newbie) with the great Bubba Watson, but INTERVIEW HIM at the same time. No pressure or anything. Ha! While Suzy was my pro all day long, I asked Bubba on camera if he’d give a quick lesson for our viewers also new to golf. He said something along the lines of “think of the hole. Put your mind on the ball”. And I kept yammering for the camera, mostly thinking of how this interview would translate on my show for the morning

viewers who may or may not care about golf. But I lined up the shot, checked my grip and ripped it. You can see on the clip we showed on my show, an overhead view of the ball going and going and going, and running right up a hill to hole #8 at the port royal golf club. The crowd at the hole started going bonkers. Then my team started going bonkers. They all thought it was a hole in one! A hole in one! But Bubba can see and says its SOOOOOOO close but it’s not in the hole but oh my gosh what a shot! The funny thing is on the camera you can detect how new I am to golf because I am suddenly totally defeated that it’s not a hole in one that we had thought judging by the crowds reaction. How funny is that and how greedy do we get in golf? Just a few holes before I was embarrassed at having topped the ball! Now here I was getting so greedy I was disappointed in coming this/close to the hole! Flash forward to the end of the day. I show up with my stellar team for the awards banquet. Our very own Suzy Whaley wins closest to the pin for an earlier hole. And then they call me up

there to be with her, because I won closest to the pin on hole #8! I turned to her and said “you get an award just for coming CLOSE? I LOVE this game!” haaa! I’m hooked! In the end it was a dream day I’ll never forget as not only did some of the best in the sport patiently allow me to play the sport with them that day, but Our team walked away with beautiful crystal trophies for winning the Gross. Meaning they never even used my huge handicap! If they would have, our team score would have been an unthinkably low 44. (And we would have gotten run right off the course at that point!) Later that day, my husband, who also played in the pro am on a different team said it was probably a good thing I didn’t get a hole in one on hole #8. “You’d have to quit now, because it would never get better than that!” So true! So….I don’t have to quit. Because there are a lot more things to learn. But let’s just say I’m highly aware of how fortunate I am for the entire experience both in Atlanta during the lessons and in Bermuda for the pro am. And yep I will continue to play!

Bubba Watson and Robin Meade celebrate after almost making a hole-in-one during the Grand Slam Pro Am at The Port Royal Golf Club for the 30th Grand Slam of Golf on October, 22, 2012 in Southampton, Bermuda. (Photo by Montana Pritchard/The PGA of America)

Robin Meade is the anchor of HLN’s morning show, “Morning Express with Robin Meade.” Among other stories, Meade anchored the network’s coverage of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq , the January 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama, and the July 2009 coverage of Michael Jackson’s memorial event. In July of 2008, she scored the exclusive first interview with freed American hostages – at their request – after their release from Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) captors. In June of 2009, Meade performed a tandem skydive with President George Herbert Walker Bush in Kennebunkport , Maine , to commemorate President Bush’s 85th birthday. Meade is also the face of HLN’s “Salute to Troops” segment, a daily message to U.S. troops using photos and videos sent in by their loved ones. College Golf Is Tested at Isleworth This year’s Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, hosted by UCF and Texas Tech, featured a stellar field, and their games were tested in breezy conditions on an extremely difficult golf course. In addition to the golf course being major championship quality, the players were treated to first class hospitality. Each shot at Isleworth Country Club is difficult, whether it is hitting the tight fairways or dealing with deep bunkers surrounding the elevated and undulating greens. The California Golden Bears handled these conditions best, and finished off an undefeated fall season, winning wire to wire against a field littered with top ten teams. It took a strong finish though, midway through the final round the University of New Mexico had a five-shot lead. Michael Kim of California captured his first individual title with solid 2nd and 3rd rounds after a stunning five under par 67 in the first round. Other top ranked players fared very well, and you should look for these names in the coming years to be playing professionally. Jordan Speith

California Golden Bears players Brandon Hagy, Joel Stalter, Michael Kim, Max Homa, Michael Weaver, Head Coach – Steve Desimone, Assistant Coach – Walter Chun (U of Texas), defending champion, finished 5th. He is coming off a great summer where he played five PGA Tour events, including a tie for 21st in the US Open. Michael Weaver (California) was the runner up in the US Amateur this summer, and he finished 4th. Last year’s collegiate National and Freshman Player of the Year, Justin Thomas (U of Alabama), tied for 2nd, just one shot behind Michael Kim. Illinois Head Coach Mike Small is no stranger to long and difficult courses having played in 12 major

Greg Sands, head coach of Texas Tech, and Michael Kim, ICI medalist and Cal player 20

championships. We talked whether his experience helps the team. Small said, “The players do ask for advice when playing a course like this, but they need to go out and get it done by themselves.” Illinois played their way into the 3rd round final group, but were passed by the impressive sub par final rounds of New Mexico and Alabama. Only four teams were able to post under par rounds during the tournament, including California’s first round and University of Florida’s second round. Having played Division II College Golf, I have a general picture of what a college golf tournament should look like. It’s a very boring picture. I was amazed from the moment I pulled in to the parking lot seeing the production of this tournament. Each team had their flags raised high behind the first tee, where the voice of the Knights, Erik Kohler announced the players teeing off. There were many volunteers employed, big name sponsors, and crystal trophies for the winners. Always keep an eye on the winners of tournaments that are played on great courses like Isleworth Country Club, where each shot requires great skill. Past winners of the Invitational include PGA Tour members Chris Kirk, Brian Harman, Harris English, Russel Henley and Bud Cauley. Florida Golf Central • Volume 13, Issue 5

Ways to Improve Your Riding Skills

Florida is a great motorcycling state. People from everywhere come to enjoy our weather, events and beautiful scenic rides. Here are a few tips to help improve your riding skills to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable ride. 1. Practice, Practice, Practice (braking, cornering, swerving, etc.). Remember the old adage, “Practice makes perfect!” 2. Find a smooth, empty, grease- and sand-free lot to practice braking, swerving, and stopping. Those are all key maneuvers in avoiding problems on the road. 3. Use the friction zone with your clutch and throttle but add slight pressure on your rear brake for very slow speeds. Practice this technique which gives you great control over your bike at low speeds. 4. Travel a less traveled road to practice corner-

surprised when their shirt doesn’t live up to their expectations. The most common problems range from shrinkage after washing, holding perspiration, fading color and inconsistent collars. They say “A little knowledge can be dangerous.” That certainly can be the case when selecting men’s golf shirts. Rick Martin, CEO of MARTIN GOLF APPAREL has the knowledge of cotton shirts which qualifies him as an “Expert.” In

consistency of yarn combined with a smoother fiber. Another fundamental of MARTIN GOLF APPAREL is that there are no synthetics. “Synthetic fiber such as polyester,” says Martin, “Holds the perspiration inside the garment. Pure cotton allows the fabric to absorb, ‘breathe’ and allow the moisture to evaporate.” How about shrinkage? “Normal shrinkage on a cotton shirt is 6-7%. With our process of impregnating the cotton, the shrinkage is less than 2%,” says Martin. “Additionally, with our two-prong color fastness process, the color and luster remain throughout the life of the shirt.” How about the color selection? “We use ‘timeless’ colors as opposed to ‘color fads’. Navy, forest green, and red – for example - are longevity colors,” says Martin. “They match almost any outfit. We also developed a cotton collar construction never rolls up or turns under. It always lays flat.” Also in the MARTIN GOLF APPAREL line are cotton sweaters and ITALIAN

fact, he might be “The Expert!” “I started with the “CF Hathaway Company” many years ago,” said Rick. “We sold upscale cotton dress shirts to specialty stores.” In 1995, Martin, who bought golf shirts that shrunk, faded and so on after washing, decided to develop the ‘perfect’ golf shirt. That led to the success of “Fairways and Green” company whose motto became, “Don’t size up!” That was the result of selecting long staple cotton,

MARINO WOOL sweaters and vests. Once again the ‘timeless’ colors compliment the shirt collection. Presently, the MARTIN GOLF APPAREL is featured in over 600 of the finer country clubs across the country. If you would like to benefit from the knowledge and experience of Rick Martin “THE KING OF COTTON SHIRTS,” look for the name MARTIN GOLF APPAREL in your golfing travels.

The King of Cotton Shirts One definition of “Expert”: Someone who knows everything about something that no one else cares about. Actually, there are numerous topics that most people know a little about while a select few study that topic throughout their lives. In many cases, they become the “Experts.” In relation to golf shirts, a high percentage of men take three things into consideration. They are price, style and color. The problem is that they’re

A Rich Tradition of Quality at Heathrow Country Club Heathrow Country Club

is more than a country club, it is an extraordinary refuge dedicated to the region’s upscale, contemporary lifestyle. Established in the late 1980s and recently acquired by Concert Golf Partners, Heathrow Country Club has long been considered one of Central Florida’s most prestigious private clubs. Featuring towering oak-lined roads, endless sunshine, soft, warm breezes and extraordinary personal service, Heathrow’s newly renovated, exceptional amenities include 18 holes of championship golf, premier tennis, a sparkling six-lane competitive-style swimming pool, unmatched athletic center, upscale dining and a grand ballroom, available for corporate and social events. Today, under the leadership of new General Manager Nate Kalb, the club aims to continue its rich tradition of excellence by offering members personalized member service. “Our reputation for outstanding service and responsiveness is the foundation for our success,” Nate says. “Our new leadership team is dedicated to enhancing and growing our offerings to ensure Heathrow Country Club members have access to the best quality programs.”

Young Executive Golf Designed by renowned architect Ron Garl, Heathrow’s newly updated fairways and challenging 18-hole golf course has hosted an impressive collection of PGA Tour players including Chris DiMarco, Cliff Kresge, Danny Ellis, Jim Thorpe, Donnie Hammond, Lion Kim, and Fulton Allem – all of whom are proud to call Heathrow home. New this winter, Heathrow Country Club introduces a new category of membership tailored for the young 26

Nate Kalb executive market of individuals age 21 to 29 with monthly dues of $200, including golf cart rentals.   “We have set out to reach and attract young professionals in their early twenties to offer affordable membership at a private club,” Nate explains. “Most golfers, at this age, play daily fee golf because they simply do not have the means to join all of the amenities of a private club. We have rolled out a new membership category, Young Executive Golf, which will make it possible for up-and-comers to join.”

Hampton Golf Has Stellar Year With High-End Acquisitions and Management Expansion Executives at Hampton Golf were confident that 2012 would be a good year for the company’s growth and development, but they could not have predicted just how successful it would turn out to be. As the industry’s most technologically advanced golf course management and development firm, Hampton Golf has long had a hand in the management of many of the Southeast’s most popular 18-hole championship golf courses, lifestyle clubhouse facilities, spas, hotels and residential communities. In exciting moves that have broadened the company’s national presence, Hampton Golf signed management contracts

with clubs in the north and west. In addition, with partner Randy Frankel, the company expanded its acquisitions to include three high-end Florida properties – Southern Hills Plantation Club, The Palencia Club and The Golf Club at North Hampton. “Hampton Golf has developed a reputation for outstanding club management and quality service, and this is reflected in the top-notch clubs we have added to our management portfolio this year,” said M.G. Orender, president of Hampton Golf and 33rd president of The PGA of America. “We have also been successful in acquiring several private clubs and are privileged 28

to be working with investor Randy Frankel to partner on these and possible future acquisitions.” One of the company’s goals for 2012 was to expand into other parts of the country. In May, Hampton Golf announced a management contract with Laughlin Ranch golf club in Bullhead City, Ariz., on the Arizona/ Nevada border. In September, the company signed with Hampshire Country Club in Westchester County, N.Y., located 30 minutes from Manhattan. The company hopes to continue the expansion trend into next year. In addition to adding Laughlin Ranch and Hampshire to its management portfolio, Hampton Golf signed contracts with three courses in Florida – Brooker Creek in Palm Harbor, Summerbrooke in Tallahassee and Verandah in Fort Myers. Another goal for 2012 was to continue to acquire high-end golf clubs. The company’s target model is a private course or daily fee course of at least 18 holes in a medium to large metropolitan area, which has been constructed or had major improvements within the last 10 years. With Frankel as a partner, Hampton Golf sought and acquired three golf clubs in 2012 that fit within this model:

one of Golfweek’s best Florida courses. Designed by Arnold Palmer, the course remains a popular local challenge with its man-made sand dunes, bridges and dramatic landscapes. One of the factors influencing its success has been Hampton Golf’s centralized customer service center that handles phone communications, tee time and reservation bookings, data and credit collection, and outreach at each of its clubs. The streamlined efficiency of the company’s signature system has resulted in increased membership, higher member satisfaction and profit gains for many club programs. Hampton Golf is committed to providing the highest standard of excellence in design,

The Power of Golf

2012 Celebrities Tee Up for Life 2012

The name of the event, “TEE UP FOR LIFE,” is the perfect description of its purpose. Golfers tee up their ball in a fund-raiser where the proceeds save lives. The ultimate goal is to cure childhood cancer. The 12th annual event held at Heathrow CC is fully named NORMA DiMARCO’S TEE UP FOR LIFE in memory of PGA Tour veteran Chris DiMarco’s mother. Norma played a huge part for the majority of the 12 years which raised over $5,000,000 since its inception and $306,000 in 2012. Many fund-raisers look at this event as a model due to its overwhelming success. In fact, it is one of the most successful one-day golf fund-raisers in the country. As a member of the Tournament Committee, I have had the privilege of seeing why it is such a ‘well oiled machine’. The first reason is Chris DiMarco. Due to Chris’ outgoing, friendly and generous personality, he has made many friends across the country. In fact, of the 30 foursomes that tee it up, at least 20 fly in from as far as California. Additionally, the celebrities 32

including perennial favorite, Nancy Lopez, take part due to their friendship with Chris. Another of Chris’ assets is the fact that he attends meetings when he is not playing on Tour. Of the 10 meetings, Chris’ participates in more than half which is not only a ‘boost’ for the committee but his ideas are very valuable. If Chris is the conductor, his father, Rich, is the locomotive. Rich is the tireless engine that drives every meeting, every sub-committee and every detail. And when there is a slight snag, his philosophy “Everything might not be perfect all of the time but we must keep one thing in mind. IT’S FOR THE KIDS!’ Other reasons for its success are the prizes (many donated by Ping), goodie bags, food, raffles, silent and live auctions and so on. Players, volunteers, celebrities and sponsors come back year after year due to the way the event is run and KNOWING that they are playing their part to cure childhood cancer. Barbara Otto represents the America Cancer Society which disperses the proceeds to R.O.C.K

Camp, cancer research and college scholarships. Speaking of sponsors, once again Dr. Jo Hewell, President and CEO of the A.T.A.P. Corporation (Financial Planning and Term Life Insurance), generously matched $27,000 of donations in addition to being a Platinum Sponsor. If you would like to make a donation to NORMA DiMARCO’S TEE UP FOR LIFE, visit: teeupforlife.com. Chris & Christian DiMarco

Salute to the Armed Forces American Red Cross Mid-Florida Region held its annual Salute to the Armed Forces (SAF) Golf Tournament, which raised $65,000 for Red Cross efforts, from support for the U.S. Military and their families to disaster relief. The SAF Golf Tournament, held at Rosen Shingle Creek, was made possible due to outstanding sponsors, including presenting sponsor Lockheed Martin, as well as United Healthcare, Tupperware, Daytona International Speedway and MillerCoors, to name a few. Raffle prizes to support the event were provided by Hard Rock, Wells Fargo, and others. University of Central Florida’s (UCF) Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) Detachment 159, including Major Clark and cadets, provided their color guard to present the colors and volunteered their time during the event. They were recognized during the awards ceremony for their future service to our country. Professional singer Gage Herrmann performed the National Anthem for 34

the more than 120 attendees, including 92 golfers. At the end of the tournament, Lockheed Martin’s team, including Jim Beck, Pat Sunderlin, Andrew McDonald, and Christian Olson, finished in first place. During the luncheon and program, the American Red Cross Services to the Armed Forces program

were highlighted and Joel W. Hass, former CEO of the Red Cross MidFlorida Region, was honored with a Service to the Armed Forces award for his commitment to supporting our U.S. Military and their families. Karen Hagan, current CEO of the Mid-Florida Region, presented Chuck Morant, Lockheed Martin chief executive, Red Cross board member and chairman of this year’s

golf tournament, with an award of appreciation for his commitment to making the SAF Golf Tournament a great success. Many people are unaware that in addition to disaster relief services, the American Red Cross’ unwavering commitment to members of the U.S. military, its veterans and their families continues to grow and develop, more than a century after Clara Barton first recruited nurses to support the U.S. Army. Today, the Red Cross is meeting the needs of a changing military and expanding services to veterans. Red Cross support of military members and their families enhances morale and contributes to increased operational capability in several ways: connecting military families during emergencies, connecting families with local community resources, providing resiliency training and supporting wounded warriors and military hospitals. JJ's Magical Memories There are some memories

that last a lifetime; some good, some bad, and if you’re lucky, some MAGICAL! Disneyworld is “WHERE MAGIC HAPPENS” and that’s what JJ Qualkenbush experienced at the “Children’s Miracle Network ProAm” held on the Magnolia and Palm courses. This was JJ’s fourth time playing in this Pro-Am. JJ is 16 years old, lives in California with his mother and father and dedicates himself to schoolwork and golf. “My parents always encouraged me to do as well as I could at school and that’s why I realize the importance of a good education,” said JJ “But honestly, my number one goal is to get good enough to play on the PGA Tour.” Jan Qualkenbush, JJ’s father, entered JJ in the Pro-Am division of the Tourna-

38

ment. “My wife and I entered JJ because of what he could experience and learn playing alongside the best golfers in the world on championship golf courses, “said Jan. “He is very mature for his age and extremely dedicated to achieve his goals. Since we are in a position to afford him these opportunities, we feel it’s the right thing to do.” JJ’s playing partners were long hitting Gary Woodland on Thursday and Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey on Friday. According to JJ, the lessons he learned were invaluable. “First and foremost, I learned that the players are just normal people playing golf. I used to think that they were unapproachable celebrities but they made me feel very comfortable. I also saw first-hand that all of their shots are not great. In fact,

they hit some bad shots like everyone else. It’s true that they hit fewer bad shots and their bad shots are not as bad as amateurs, but I was surprised to see some of their miscues.” After the first round I spent an hour or so giving JJ golf tips related to his putting stroke and swing. He is an attentive listener and quick learner. He’s also swift to give praise when something works. After a helpful tip he’d say, “The difference is night and day.” It means a lot to an instructor when the student gives heartfelt feedback and takes a confident student to give credit when credit is due. With a ‘zero handicap’, it is almost impossible to compete for a high finish in the Pro-Am with golfers carrying as much as an 18 handicap. But that didn’t stop JJ from playing impressive golf on his own ball. In addition to playing solidly both days, it was highlighted with a six iron from 185 yards on Magnolia’s par 3, 15th hole. It stopped two feet from the hole and a tap-in birdie. The Pro-Am dinner was held at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I joined JJ and his parents. As we were walking to the dining area, we passed a group of Disney entertainers dancing alongside our path. I encouraged JJ to dance along with them and without a second thought, he was dancing with the group. When I suggested that he do a golf swing dance, once again he was game and within moments the dance line was doing a golf swing dance with him. JJ knows how to have good, clean fun! JJ Qualkenbush is polite, intelligent, hard working and talented. Fall Golf Course Maintenance Update The fall season

is upon us and Florida Golf Courses are in a transitional state as cooler nights start appearing and our warm season grasses like bermudagrass and seashore paspalum begin to slow down their growth activity. Depending on what climatic zone you live in: North, Central or South the changes occur faster or slower on the calendar and sometimes hardly at all in the far southern portions of the state. It takes a strong Siberian Express cold front to get grasses in Miami and Naples to shut down. But no matter where you live golf course superintendents have been or are preparing our courses for the busy fall/winter golf season when our seasonal visitors return and tourists flock to Florida to escape the ice and snow. If you’re just coming back to Florida, you have missed what one superintendent calls his “100-Day War,” otherwise known as the summer renovation season, when Florida courses are vigorously aerified and verticut to remove organic thatch build up and provide access for air, water and nutrients to feed the turfgrass. When your course is undergoing those late summer/early fall renovations, keep in mind this is them most opportune time to reinvigorate the grass with the minimum of disturbance to the majority of golfers. When your course does close for late season renovation, take this time to go play another area course that has either already recovered from their program or visit one that hasn’t punched those holes yet. Every course has to do this, so you’re not just being picked on. It’s called turfgrass maintenance for a reason. All this hole-punching, verticutting and sand topdressing energizes the plant by creating pore space in the soil profile allowing for water storage as well as good drainage, which must be balanced for healthy turf. These pore spaces also allow air and nutrients to reach the roots and be absorbed to the plant leaves (grass blades) to manufacture carbohydrates in the plant to feed the whole plant. 40

Ripping up the fairways in the summer so you can enjoy fall golf. Now we’re talking about photosynthesis! Do you remember this chlorophyll making process you learned about in junior high science? It goes something like sugar in the presence of oxygen and sunlight yields chlorophyll and the nice green color we love to see on our golf courses and in our landscapes. Some times the late hurricane season of October and November can have some gloomy days and the turf can go off color because the food pro-

duction has slowed down because of reduced sunlight. Well, the “100-Day War” is coming to a cease-fire. The turf has been given a good physical and the winter grass seed is being sowed on many courses, mostly in the North and Central zones. Establishing the overseeding to maturity is the big job now so you can enjoy those neat light and dark stripes we see on TV golf. Happy Holidays everyone. See you next month! Bridlewood® 2010 Monterey County Pinot Noir At Bridlewood, we like to take our time. We hand select our grapes from California’s vast Central Coast AVA, and we pour our passion into winemaking. Our picturesque 105-acre estate rests on a high bench of ancient seabed, facing the Pacific breezes that meander through the Santa Ynez Mountains to the south and the Purisima Hills and San Raphael Mountains to the north. Days are warm, nights are cool and the abundant sunshine is tempered by wind and fog. This is Central Coast Wine Country at its best.

About the Wine: Our Bridlewood 2010 Monterey County Pinot Noir displays lush floral aromas that extend to the palate and combine with dark fruit flavors of raspberry and dark cherry with hints of caramel and toffee. This wine has a complex structure that is framed by floral and black pepper notes, creating an elegant mouthfeel and lingering finish.

About Monterey County: Monterey County enjoys a cool, foggy climate that is ideal for Pinot Noir. Typically, bud break begins several weeks earlier and harvest ends several weeks later than other growing regions. This extra month of time on the vine allows the grapes to develop intense, complex flavors. Monterey County houses the significant Monterey AVA, which includes nine sub-regions, united by the cooling influence of Monterey Bay.

Viticulture Notes: The 2010 growing season in Monterey County was the much cooler than average, which led to a delayed bloom and set in May. In August, the cool temperatures were briefly punctuated by unusual heat spikes, hitting around 108˚ F in some cases. Slight rainfall refreshed the grapes and mild autumn temperatures rose a bit, contributing to an ideal harvest.

Winemaker Notes: The grapes for this wine were picked at night to keep them as cool as possible to retain natural acidity and expressive flavors. The fruit was destemmed, but not crushed, leaving a significant portion of whole berries going into the fermentor. The must was fermented at a maximum of 80 °F to maintain the delicate flavors and aromas of Monterey Pinot Noir. The skins had approximately five to seven days of contact, just enough to extract all the maximum amount of color without sacrificing flavor, aroma or a silky seductive mouthfeel.

Appellation: Monterey County, California Varietal Content: Pinot Noir Alcohol Content: 14% pH: 3.70 Titratable Acidity: 0.56 g/100ml Residual Sugar: 0.25 g/100ml

“Golf-Safe!”

By Tommy E. Jones, Fire Chief Griffin, Georgia

Planning and Responding to Golf’s Greatest Hazard! For Florida resident, Cher Hollar, the fact that sudden cardiac arrest is the number one cause of death on a golf course is more than just a statistic….it is a painful reminder of a tragic personal loss! On September 5th, 2008, Cher’s husband of 35 years, Phil, an avid golfer and local pro in the Ft. Myers area, died suddenly of cardiac arrest playing the game he loved. Through her grief, and even the frustration felt over mistakes made in the response to her husband’s illness, Cher has embarked on a crusade to see that golf courses, players, and first responders are better prepared for incidents that can occur on the links. In the years since her loss, she has personally visited courses near her home and asked to see a copy of their Emergency Operations Plan. When she discovered that most of these courses could not produce a plan, Cher eventually took her argument to county commissioners, state legislators, and the press, which is hopefully prompting a greater level of awareness. Through proactive planning, courses and players can be better prepared for medical emergencies that sometimes occur during a round of golf.

Facing The Facts:

Most people might ask, “Why should there be a concentrated effort to prepare for sudden medical emergencies on a golf course?” The answer is very evident: the game can be strenuous to some and golf courses, even those located in urban areas, can be remote from access to First Responders. Most golfers love playing the game in warm weather. Knowing the competitive nature of the average player, it is not uncommon for golfers to forget that they have a body to care for, as well as a perfect swing to master. Becoming dehydrated is always an issue on the links, which can lead to a host of problems. Even more critical is the realization that courses almost everywhere have holes that are remote from the clubhouse, neighborhoods, and on slow days, other players. The need for every course to have an 46

emergency plan is critical; so is the importance for every golfer to know what to do if they, or one of their fellow players, need medical attention.

Knowing What To Do:

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone and at any time. For decades, the public has been made aware of the warning signs of a heart attack and, how to start the Emergency Medical System for the prompt delivery of services. Furthermore, millions worldwide have participated in C.P.R. (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) classes in which the ABC’s of layperson cardiac care are demonstrated and practiced. More often than not, these classes are taught in the clean and relaxed environment of a classroom, fire station, or community center. Rest assured, when the real emergency goes down, the conditions won’t be as pleasant. Having prior exposure to C.P.R. training and knowing where to access an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) is paramount in rendering immediate care. The AED is one of the medical community’s greatest contributions to patient survival in a cardiac emergency. An AED is a portable, battery-operated device that diagnoses cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular defibrillation and delivers a shock to the heart allowing it to restore a sustainable rhythm. AED’s are everywhere, cost-effective (starting at $1000), and easy to use. Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the leading cause of death in this country, more so than breast cancer, lung cancer, and AIDS combined. Percentage-wise, early use of an AED can improve a person’s chance of survival by about 70% to 90%. Most AEDs are very user-friendly and have voice prompts that will walk you through the procedure, so never hesitate to use one! The skill of CPR use to be fairly complicated with its stringent step-bystep procedures and precise measurements of hand position and amount of breaths. However, new standards have been released, and the process has

simplified to the point that anyone can perform CPR without fear of not following proper steps. As expected, the doctors and associations who recommend CPR procedures have all but eliminated breathing into a patient. Although everyone needs to attend CPR training and become certified on an AED, the fundamentals of performing CPR have gone from A-B-C (providing an Airway, giving Breaths, and performing Compressions) to a simplified C-A-B. C or Compressions, is performed by pushing hard and fast on the center of a victim’s chest (about 2 inches deep on an adult and child). A, or Airway, means tilting the victim’s head back and lifting the chin to open the airway. Finally, B, or Breathing means to give 2 Rescue Breaths after doing a regiment of 30 compressions until medical help or an AED arrives. The lack of emphasis on having to do mouth-to-mouth breathing on a victim should curb anxiety and lessen hesitation time so rescuers can immediately begin chest compressions. Thankfully, few golfers hit the links without first putting their cell phone in their bag. Passing on accurate information to the local 911 center about the exact nature and location of the emergency is critical to increase the chances of success of a cardiac arrest on the course. Furthermore, each course should work with their local fire and EMS providers to pre-plan for unforeseen emergencies. Although tragedies, like the loss of Phil Hollar, are rare in the game of golf, the incident highlights the point that pre-planning for sudden medical emergencies should be a daily part of doing business at the clubhouse. All golfers go to the course looking for relaxation, competitiveness, and comradery. By taking proactive steps and having an emergency response plan, golf’s greatest hazard, sudden cardiac arrest, can be better handled if and when the emergency occurs. Tommy E. Feel Golf unveils 73º conforming wedge

Wedge provides high, soft-landing shots using full ‘Driver’ swing Feel Golf Co., Inc., an innovator in golf club design since 1985, is introducing a 73-degree USGA conforming wedge. Feel Golf, one of the pioneers of the high-lofted wedges, first introduced a 64-degree wedge in the early 1990s. That club, the highest lofted club in play of Tour, is a favorite weapon of Phil Mickelson today. It was thought to be too extreme at the time. “The 73-degree wedge allows players to hit a very high, soft-landing shot with ease from 50 yards in,” said Miller. “Just like the 64-degree wedge, our 73-degree wedge allows the golfer to take their full swing, which is a golfer’s most repeatable swing, and simply aim it right at the pin.” Feel Golf’s satin finish, 73-degree wedge helps eliminate most of the short game guesswork of open stances, open faces and half swings. It allows you to go right at the pin and stick, making bunker play seem easy. Miller said one of the common problems for recreational players is that they lack the touch and confidence to fully commit to the shot, so they decelerate, producing inconsistent results that lead to extra strokes around the greens.

Feel Golf's 73º wedge allows golfers to use their full “Driver” swing eliminating guesswork in the short game.

“With good rhythm, players can take a full swing with the 73-degree wedge,” said Miller. The wedge glides through the ball landing very softly from a tight lie or a bunker making it easier to score just like the Pros.” For more information on all of Feel Golf’s wedges and other innovative products, visit www.feelgolf.net or call 877-934-7387.

Senior PGA Professional National Championship

Smiling Fore Life The South Florida PGA Foundation recently scored a “hole in one” with patients at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital when it partnered with Great Greenz to install an Astroturf putting green on the facility’s fourth floor. The winning stroke was part of an ongoing South Florida PGA program, called “Smiling Fore Life.” Initiated in May, 2010, this effort has brought PGA Professionals to the Hollywood hospital every Tuesday afternoon to teach pediatric patients the basics of golf. “Smiling Fore Life provides a welcome distraction to young patients from personal and medical hardships they may be facing,” said Geoff Lofstead, Executive Director of the South Florida PGA. “It also allows the patients to learn a fun activity they can play at any age.” 52

“We opened our freestanding facility with the theme of ‘power of play’ because we appreciate the value of letting a kid be a kid, even in the hospital setting,” said Nick Masi, director of Family Centered Care at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “The putting green is a perfect addition to an already well-received program.” Smiling Fore Life, now supported by the Florida Golf License Plate Program, was first developed as a means of providing PGA Professionals with an opportunity to touch the lives of individuals in South Florida. Since the program started at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, it has grown leaps and bounds. Today, nine PGA Professionals visit four south Florida children’s hospitals weekly, teaching young patients

Chromax 'Distance' High-Energy Titanium Core Ball New 90 compression ball provides optimal trajectory, distance & visibility

Chromax Golf, manufacturers of the patent-pending metallic finish golf balls, is introducing Chromax "Distance" to its line of High Visibility Technology golf balls. Distance, the company’s first 90 compression ball, is designed for players of all abilities with Chromax’s high-energy titanium core and patented dimple design that optimizes trajectory, distance and spin. “We tested the Chromax Distance at a highly respected industry testing laboratory in San Diego and the results showed that at a club head speed of 90 mph, the total distance (carry & roll) equaled the major brands,” said Stuart Lin, founder of the Chromax Golf Company and inventor of the Chromax golf ball. “When the Chromax Distance was tested at a field average of 108 mph, it outperformed the major brands.”

The Titanium inner core provides maximum energy transfer at all swing speeds. Golfers get that "Tour" performance experience when the Chromax Distance releases "hot" off the clubface. The soft cover allows the better player to shape shots with optimal spin and take dead aim at the pin. They offer programming and support to keep people with MS self-sufficient and their homes safe, while their educational programs heighten public awareness and promote understanding about the disease. MSF resources not only assist people who have MS, but assist their families and caregivers, regional support groups, and healthcare professionals too. Access to MSF’s programs and services is available through their interactive web site or their national, toll-free helpline staffed by caring caseworkers and peer counselors. MSF’s priority is to serve with empathy, resourcefulness and responsibility. All MSF services, as well as information, literature and subscriptions to our publications are provided free of charge. Anti-Aging Breakthrough!

Betterthan

Surgery?

“Who would have thought that this ‘weird’ combination of cellulite lasers with skin tightening lasers would be able to revival a $17k face lift!”

In

a remarkable turn of events, arguably one of the strangest in the history of Florida aesthetics,

women all across Orlando are turning to a specialist named Angel Rodriguez instead of Botox® or plastic surgery to get rid of wrinkles, loose skin, dark circles under the eyes, and other facial imperfections. “It’s the only guaranteed way to look 10-15 years younger without needles or knives,” Rodriguez boasts. And if consumer response is any indication of his effectiveness, just try booking an appointment. It's not unusual to have to schedule three months in advance to see him. Has everyone gone crazy? Well . . . not really. Scientific Breakthrough or Beginners Luck? It all begins with the Syneron brand of laser-like technology (utilized by Rodriguez), which have been proven to be “the only combined energy platform that effectively treats wrinkles, skin laxity, age spots, pigmentation, and acne” in scientific clinical studies with full FDA approval. However that's just the beginning . . . Rodriguez’s results are so accelerated that a representative from Syneron has flat out said that he has seen nothing like them in his ten years in the industry and has offered to buy his “before and after” pictures to promote the company. Dr. Destephens, an anti-aging specialist and internal medicine doctor, has seen Rodriguez’s work first hand and has actually gone “under the laser” himself. “Angel has developed his own unique set of protocols that are an evolution of Syneron technology,” says Dr. Destephens. “He has been able to get far better results than even what the manufacturer advertises because he has tweaked and optimized the protocols. That's why so many people started calling it 'The Angelic Lift.'” And the Syneron laser technology by it’s own merits is nothing to sneeze at for treating wrinkles and cinching up loose skin. Just look at all the press coverage it's been getting recently: It's been on Rachel Ray, The Doctors, Dr.

Phil, and famously on Keeping Up with the Kardashians for treating Kim’s cellulite, as well as dozens of other media outlets. But when Rodriguez got his hand on this technology, he stumbled onto something totally unique and rare . . . Beginners Luck Strikes Again! Then on February 24th, 2007, at a meeting of world renowned plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and aesthetic MDs, he had a bit of luck . . . maybe it was insight. Rodriguez was in a seminar learning under one of the master practitioners of the Syneron laser company who has celebrity clients around the world. He was demonstrating how when you combine cellulite reduction lasers with wrinkle reduction, unlikely results start to happen. . . Rodriguez saw that the combination of different technologies was key to getting pronounced results faster, and immediately started experimenting on himself. “I was too naive to limit my expectations about what was possible non-invasively, so I kept trying new things,” he says. What He Found Was Wildly Exciting . . . "The first thing I was able to do was remove a scar from my neck that had been plaguing me since early childhood," he says. "If you come to my office, I'll show you the pictures." By combining laser modalities in very specific ways, he was able to shrink loose skin and fat, dissolve crows feet, and reduce wrinkles and fine lines far better than anyone thought was possible non-invasively.

He started applying what he was learning to his practice and amazing things started to happen . . . Tu m m y Tu c k W i t h o u t Surgery! Rodriguez found that by combining cellulite lasers with skin tightening lasers, he could actually get near tummy tuck results without surgery! Max, who came all the way from Italy for this, writes, “To be able to look at yourself naked in the mirror, and see a tight, ten-year younger version of yourself without a massive ‘smile scar’ running across your belly is worth it for twice the price of plastic surgery!” (See video and pictures at www.NoCutTuck.com).

Turkey Neck Reduction Without Surgery! Beverly from Gainesville writes: “I thought about getting a Lifestyle Lift,” she says, “for the loose flesh under my neck. When I read all the horror stories associated with it there was no way I was going to try that. Thanks to Angel, I was able to get a very natural and feminine looking facelift without surgery, and without any foreign bodies inserted into my face. An added bonus that I didn’t expect but turned out wonderfully was my eyelids were lifted and the bags and wrinkles underneath were reduced! ”

Annual ‘Wildcat Gives Back’ honors local heroes Wildcat Run Golf & Country Club in

Lee County Sheriff's Officers Haddock, Schmidt, Hillman and Bowden

Estero recently welcomed local public service personnel for a golf tournament in appreciation of their heroic efforts in the community. Nearly 100 members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Estero Fire Rescue took part in the day-long celebration called “Wildcat Gives Back.” In addition to golf on Wildcat’s 18-hole course designed by golf legend Arnold Palmer, the guests enjoyed lunch at the clubhouse. “We are so proud of the many individuals who work tirelessly to keep our community safe,” said General Manager Bill Delayo. “This is just a small way of saying ‘thank you’ each year for the job well done.” Wildcat Run Golf & Country Club is a private, member-owned club on Corkscrew Road east of I-75 in Estero. Founded in 1985, Wildcat Run has consistently maintained its position among the most prestigious clubs in Southwest Florida. For more information, visit www.WildcatRunCC.com or call 239-947-6066.

T he New Old Palm Old Palm Golf Club –

the premier private and exclusive residential community in the Palm Beaches – has reopened its Raymond Floyd signature course following extensive course enhancements and the addition of the cutting edge TrackMan golf radar in its 33-acre “Golf Studio.” All putting surfaces on the golf course, three regulation length practice holes and Old Palm’s locally famous 19th hole have been re-turfed with TifEagle Bermuda to provide faster green speeds and truer rolls. Green complexes on several holes were re-contoured to slope from back to front and enlarged to improve approach-shot receptivity. Bunkers throughout the 7,401yard layout underwent upgrades, with a handful of new bunkers installed to create more strategic options and definition. “We are committed to providing our members with the best playing surfaces and course conditions,” says Bud Taylor, Old Palm’s Director of Golf. “The TifEagle greens offer a pure short game experience that players of all skill levels will appreciate.” Old Palm is also dedicated to its members’ game improvement, and recently installed the TrackMan golf radar in the Golf Studio. A

revolutionary golf swing and ball flight analysis device, it uses Doppler radar to generate precise club and ball flight measurements. Used by the PGA TOUR,

The R&A, professional golfers and leading collegiate teams, TrackMan has set the industry standard for accuracy in golf. “With TrackMan our members can clearly track their shots, adjust their swings accordingly and realize more consistency and better scores on the course,” adds Taylor. “It is also a tremendous asset in club-fitting, as we can fine-tune different elements, such as clubface loft and shaft flex, to maximize performance.” One of the most complete golf instruction and training facilities in the U.S., the Golf Studio anchors a spacious double-ended range, V-1 equipped hitting bay, short-game area and three regulation practice holes – a par 3, 4, and 5 – on which golfers can replicate every shot and angle they encounter on the par-72 course. Old Palm’s tournament-caliber golf course presents an enticing blend of power and precision-oriented holes. The front nine is routed through sweeping savannahs and wetlands while the back nine is carved through indigenous palm and pine trees. Traditional square tee boxes give the course a classic feel, and large landing areas and subtly-elevated greens emphasize approach shot values. ➋ The Z Factor “It was pretty ballsy to invest in Ballzee. Everyone turned it down. No one thought we could sell more than ten or twenty -thousand units…including Titleist and TopFlite. So I took it on.” --Ed Sprague What’s a golfer got to do to successfully launch their par-saving contraption? And God knows there’s no shortage of golfers with contraptions. Evidently all you really need, is to be is ballsy [ball-Zee]. The Z Factor, by Career Press, is at times a side-splitting, in your face, inspirational collection of stories about how author, Edwin J. Sprague’s hard-core grit trumped an absurd lack of credentials and landed him on the field of dreams with the New York Jets as an NFL free-agent! How, without an education or experience he took a $20,000 trial job and in less than 5-years became the President of a company managing product distribution for high-profile direct merchandising titans QVC, Total Gym, Christie Brinkley, Suzanne Somers and more. How he, a remedial reader, overcame attention deficiencies and became a published author…and, how this helplessly ordinary guy took his little golf idea and sold 2 million units— and counting. Thirty-five years of doing the things ordinary folks dream of— he and his techniques are well, common—and easily duplicated! This guy once landed the world-renowned behemoth QVC by sneaking into their facilities pretending to be an employee and then roaming the halls until he found someone who would do business with him! It’s a great read with great lessons that’ll help anybody get their idea to market or dreams to the table. Available at Barnes and Noble, Amazon and anywhere books are sold.
