Affordable luxury isn’t a common attribute of private golf clubs, but Quail Village is the clear exception. people who join, who are looking for a golf club experience that is much less formal than the typical country club. There are a lot of opportunities to make friends and socialize. Quail Village hosts monthly wine tastings, community events, golf groups, and regular clinics. New members can expect the warmest of welcomes. Member ambassadors help to introduce new members to the club and the many groups that it has. Charlie and Sheryl Baker are non-resident members who were initially just looking for a place to golf, but when they joined Quail

Village they “gained more from the membership than they ever anticipated.” Charlie and Sheryl knew that Quail Village had a challenging golf course, but they didn’t fully appreciate the social aspect until they became members. “In addition to the golfing aspect, there’s a tremendous social organization at Quail Village, which we didn’t realize at the time. There’s a new food and beverage manager and the food is fabulous, the outside Bogeys area is a great social gathering place, there’s a bingo night, there’s a game night, they have countless activities and social

functions, wine tastings, special food nights - those are things we didn’t plan on participating in. I just wanted it for the golf. We now spend a tremendous amount of time at Quail Village.” The community at Quail Village has had a lasting impact on both Charlie and Sheryl, who concluded that they had “developed tremendous friendships at Quail Village far exceeding their expectations.”

The uniquely playable golf course at Quail Village sets it apart. The course has a challenging layout that places much more emphasis on ball placement than on long drives. Water comes into play on fourteen of the eighteen holes, challenging players to make intelligent risk/ reward decisions as they make their way around the course. As an added feature, players can choose to walk the course after noon. Most of the new members meet new friends by joining the golf groups and events. Jim Goehler highlighted “the Winter Challenge, where players go out for thirteen weeks and take their best eleven scores. There’s a big celebration at the end of that – so there’s a lot of recognition of feats well done and it ties together the golf and social aspects nicely.” The community makes a big commitment to getting the members involved, which is why the course has a reputation for being

among the most family friendly in Naples. The club has a tremendous teaching program led my Gary Kraft and Chuck Lange who help nervous players become confident golfers. The First Tee of Naples/Collier also hosts regular clinics at the club to help introduce the game to kids. In fact, two Quail Village members, Gianna and Pearl (pictured right), recently placed first and second in the First Tee Elementary School Tournament. Quail Creek Country Club to Host 2017 U.S. Women’s Mid Amateur Championship Quail Creek Country Club, in Naples has been selected by the United States Golf Association as the host site for the 2017 U.S. Women’s MidAmateur Championship. Scheduled for Oct. 7-12, the 31st U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur will be the club’s first USGA championship. “The USGA is honored to add Quail Creek Country Club as a championship site,” said Diana Murphy, USGA vice president and Championship Committee chairman. “We’re confident the club will be a terrific host, and we look forward to crowning the 31st U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion in the vibrant golf community of Naples.” Designed in 1981 by Arthur Hills, who also renovated Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club, host site of the 2016 U.S. Open, Quail Creek features two 18-hole courses named Quail and Creek. The course for the 2017 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur will be announced at a later date. Both courses were renovated in 2013 by Kevin F. Leo, Quail Creek’s golf course superintendent, with Hills serving as a consultant. Renovations include an increase in playable native areas that has reduced the amount of water, fertilizer and maintenance required; the restoration of bermudagrass throughout the course; and the addition and restoration of bunkers. Golf Course and Clubhouse Renovations Complete at Pelican Preserve

This season, Pelican Preserve members and players found a refreshed 27-hole championship course and a newly renovated golf clubhouse awaiting their return. Just in time to kick off a new season, WCI Communities completed renovations to the Chip Powell-designed course and golf clubhouse at the 55-and-better lifestyle community in Fort Myers.

26,145-square-foot clubhouse introduced a new indoor/outdoor covered patio for alfresco dining. Enclosing the patio off the second level not only doubled seating in the full-service, members-only dining room, but it also provided a beautiful view of The Ibis course’s finishing hole. Pelican Preserve’s golf clubhouse amenities also include a banquet room and a state-of-theart fitness center with spa treatment rooms. “When we undertake improvements, our ultimate goal is adding value to our members’ experience,” said Smith.

“The seventh green redesign is particularly dramatic,” said Pelican Preserve General Manager Joe Smith. “Our golfers are giving it high marks!”

The five-month improvement project on The Heron course included a complete renovation of putting and practice greens, as well as a finetuning of the The Egret and Ibis courses, to align with United States Golf Association specifications.

Mediterra Completes $15 Million Golf Course Renovations, $1.5 Million Sports Club Expansion The Club at Mediterra has completed nearly $17 million in renovations to its two championship golf courses, an expansion at The Sports Club and the addition of new tennis and bocce courts. The projects were designed to enhance the membership experience and the active lifestyle at Mediterra, the only Naples country club recently named among the Platinum Club’s 2016-2018 top 50 private clubs in the country. Additional social and meeting space and a larger fitness center were among the top priorities identified by Sports Club members. The $1.5 million project doubled the size of the existing fitness center and introduced all new equipment, including a Life Fitness Synrgy system, which incorporates multiple workout options and configurations and MyZone, a monitor used for group exercise and personal training to track heart rate and optimize workout efficiency. Mediterra’s commitment to providing an extraordinary golf experience necessitated improvements to the Tom Fazio-designed North and South courses. The two-year project started in 2015 and was completed in phases during the

slower summer months. Enhancements included replacing irrigation, bunkers and re-grassing with Platinum TE seashore paspalum. Practice facilities and ranges were also renovated. Work on the South Course was completed in December 2015; the North Course this December. “From the tee box to the out-of-bounds area and each grain of sand, everything is brand new,” said Carmen Mauceri, club general manager and chief operating officer. “The only thing we didn’t touch were the greens.” “The grass was chosen for its color, cold-weather and low-light tolerance, playability and performance,” said Tim Hiers, director of agronomy for The Club at Mediterra. “It has very deep roots and is the best on the market. Keep Your Head Back at Impact Master Swing Tips by Steve Anderson, Master PGA Professional

One of the biggest differences between a Tour pro and a high handicapper is the position of their head at impact. Many high handicappers have their head in front of the ball as their club strikes it. They’ve slid their head forward during their downswing which will lead to a big slice in most cases. Golfer that do this are said to have gotten ahead of the ball but I like to say they’ve gotten; ‘A HEAD’ of the ball. The photo shows me holding my students head back with my club. It’ll feel strange at first, but you’ll notice that you’re quickly striking the ball more solidly and have eliminated much of your slice. We know that your legs drive forward to create power but keep your head back at impact and you’ll be hitting like a champ in no time. The Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Report Our year ended with a fabulous golf event and dinner at Pasadena Yacht & Country Club. We presented all of the Chapter Awards, and closed our year in style. I would like to thank David Willis and the team at Yamaha Golf Cars for partnering with us to make that event a success. As we embark on 2017, I want to thank all of our host sites for the 2017 Tournament Calendar. The Chapter Board worked very hard putting this calendar together, and we hope that many of our members participate in more events this season. By the time this is published, the Chapter Board will have met to vote on all our Chapter Award winners for 2016. We have some great candidates in almost every category, and it is nice to recognize those who are at the top of their profession. The Chapter is excited to have secured some new partners for 2017, including a title partner for our Chapter Championship which will be contested at Old Memorial. There will be more details later about these partners, and how much they mean to the Chapter. Fox Hollow Golf Club This Tampa Bay Favorite Is One of Florida’s Best

Fox Hollow Golf Club is one of the premier

golf courses in the state and was recently rated 57th by Golf Digest’s Top 75 Courses Accessible to the Public in Florida. Purchased by the Creighton family three and a half years ago, one of their goals was to take the course to a higher level by upgrading course conditions and constantly making improvements. Dave Creighton, Sr. has owned and operated several courses in Florida starting with Northdale Golf Club from 1980 to 2000. Other courses include Rosemont, Kissimmee, Celebration, Countryway, Lexington Oaks and now Fox Hollow. GolfCoastMagazine.com

Dave Sr. had a 21-year professional hockey career including 11 seasons in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Black Hawks and New York Rangers. Son Adam followed his dad’s path into professional hockey with a 14-year NHL career, including two years with the Tampa Bay Lightning (1992/93 and 1993/94). Dave’s other son, Dave Jr., is an accomplished PGA golf professional. He has spent his career managing the family’s golf course properties. When the Creightons purchased Fox Hollow in August of 2013 they immediately

started upgrading the facility. New machinery was purchased for golf course maintenance and different maintenance practices were followed to ensure that the golf course is always in great condition. The restaurant and banquet room also went through a facelift and were upgraded with new furniture and décor in 2014. Opening in 1994, the Fox Hollow golf course has the distinction of being one of the last courses designed and built by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., one of the most prolific and innovative golf course designers of all time. In his design of Fox Hollow, the legendary Jones created a layout as pictur-

esque as it is playable. Quite simply, Fox Hollow offers a good, fair test of golf. The par-71 championship layout features five sets of tees and offers new challenges every time it’s played, mixing native trees and vegetation, sparkling lakes, sand bunkers and a variety of wildlife. Fox Hollow’s rolling fairways are a delightful departure from the pancakeflat layouts found elsewhere in Florida. The putting surfaces at Fox Hollow feature SeaDwarf Paspalum, a hearty turfgrass that can be irrigated with effluent, reclaimed, or even seawater. The Tarpon Springs course offers a challenge to golfers of all skill levels. The Tarpon Springs Golf Course is owned and operated by the City of Tarpon Springs. The original nine holes of the golf course were built in 1907. In 1926 the course was redesigned and made an 18-hole facility by Wayne Styles and John Van Kleek.
