PGA Pros are Making a Lasting Impact in Our Community Golf is a part of life here in Southwest Florida. Our local PGA Professionals make that possible – their work builds our communities and drives our tourist economy. And when they’re not working on club business, many of our local PGA Professionals are changing lives by raising money for local charities.
The impact is far reaching. Local PGA Pros have raised over $275,000 to support Folds of Honor, provided funding for the PGA Golf Management Program at Florida Gulf Coast University, operated and raised money for the Southwest Florida Junior Golf Association, supported critical rehabilitation treatments at SalusCare, helped to build local homes with Habitat for Humanity, introduced countless kids to the game of golf by assisting the First Tee of Collier County, and much more. We’ve spoken to some of the people who help raise money, and those who benefit from it, to highlight the impact local PGA Members are having on our community.

Folds of Honor provides scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service-members. The money raised by this event has helped military families across the country, especially because 86% of the money raised for Folds of Honor goes directly to benefit military kids. Closer to home, twelve children living in the Fort Myers and Cape Coral areas have received scholarships with money that was directly raised at events hosted by Metzger.
Folds of Honor Foundation Tom Metzger, PGA has hosted an annual event benefitting the Folds of Honor Foundation at the Vineyards Country Club for ten years. The event has raised over $275,000 since its inception ten years ago, and recent events are attracting over 200 players and raising between $30,000-$35,000 per event.
The event is an incredible celebration for American heroes. Veterans are invited and honored. ROTC Kids volunteer and help raise money. Attendees are educated on the meaning of each of the folds in the flag. Golfers honor the Veterans with a 21-golf ball salute. Everyone has a great time playing a round for a great cause. “This event brings our whole community together,” commented Tom Metzger, “Our members have been incredibly supportive, and local businesses have made an enormous impact by donating over 200 raffle prizes to our event.”

source of funding for Florida Gulf Coast University, however, the funds that come from the State have strings attached that make it impossible to run a PGA program without outside support. Money raised through the Southwest PGA Chapter helps to fill the gap.
Over the last ten years, over $1,000,000 has been raised for the Folds of Honor Foundation by Southwest Florida PGA members through similar fundraisers, events, and charitable giving.
“The Tournament of Charities has an enormous impact on our program here at Florida Gulf Coast University.” According to Tara McKenna, “The money affects everyone in the program by letting us buy technology and resources. It also motivates our students by letting us send a team of five students to the Jones Cup – a bucket list item for our students.”

they’ve handed out over $290,000 in scholarships and they are working hard to reach their goal of an additional $210,000 in the next five years so that they can hit the $500,000 milestone for scholarships awarded. The money contributed by the Tournament of Charities is a blessing to the organization because they don’t have to deplete their general fund to support those scholarships.
The example set by PGA Members is clearly reflected in the kids. Jeff Nixon shared that, “Starting in 2012 the kids decided to take the money that would’ve been spent on trophies and donate it to charity. It’s truly inspirational to see the kids pay it forward towards children in greater need.” The SWFJGA had 157 active players in 2016, has handed out over 300 scholarships to help kids advance their education, and the kids enrolled in the program have a 95% high school graduation rate.
clubs, the Tournament of Charities has seen a decline in participation. It’s a trend that the PGA is working hard to reverse. “Over the last 20 years we’ve made a massive difference to the Southwest Florida community,” said Bill Harley, President of the Southwest PGA Chapter, “But there’s so much potential for our members to do more.”
Going Forward
Golfers can take action to help the PGA in its mission – either by supporting current fundraisers or advocating within your club for fundraising events, you can be part of the team that makes a difference here in Southwest Florida.

A New Day, a New Name The Golf Links of Charlotte Harbor
”Movers and Shakers” is a term used
to refer to business leaders, and those who have made great accomplishments; it was coined by poet Arthur O’Shaughnessy in his 1873 poem Ode. “Movers and Shakers” fits SW Florida’s golf industry leader, Rich Smith, PGA. Just 11 months ago, Smith’s first purchase of Sarasota County icon Bobcat Trail Golf Club was official. After a multimillion dollar renewal of bunkers, greens and fairways along with a completely renovated clubhouse including an all new pro shop and updated restaurant, the totally reinvented Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club emerged. GolfCoastMagazine.com
Smith’s second purchase is now official, with Port Charlotte Golf Club now joining the Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club family. Centrally located in the heart of Charlotte County, the course has a reputation as one of the foremost premier layouts in Southwest Florida. Wasting no time in showing this facility will also be aligning with Smith’s vision and undergoing its own renewal, the new name was revealed introducing The Golf Links of Charlotte Harbor. In announcing the acquisition of Port Charlotte Golf Club, Smith said: “It’s a beautiful golf course. The people here

are as nice and friendly as the people at Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club. Being that this is my hometown and my community, I love the fact that I will have two of the nicest golf courses in the area.” The summer excitement in Sarasota and Charlotte Counties will center around the always continuing efforts to improve Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club and the start of the renewal and renovations at The Golf Links of Charlotte Harbor. looking to improve your game, you now have two locations to benefit from the Sorenstam Golf Academy Instruction. With Smith’s vision, there will always be efforts being put forth to be better and improve guest experiences. Both facilities will share in this vision while sharing in the core values of exceptional quality, superb hospitality, charitable giving and lots of fun. Rich Smith and his teams will be working hard to make golf exciting at both locations. Smith’s vision doesn’t stop with just these two courses, it goes far beyond, looking to
the future of golf. With a looming announcement in October 2018 that will impact 29 million golfers and 15,500 golf facilities, Smith promises to evolutionize the game of golf. While continuing to work on all the positive changes and future announcements, Rich Smith is extremely excited about one announcement in particular. He is pleased to announce a partnership and support of a very important community, Folds of Honor. Folds of Honor provides educational assistance to families of service men and women who have “given their life” to our country, and our way of life. Smith says, “It is our extreme pleasure to do our small part in our larger community to give back through the game of golf to this very important and life changing social initiative.” The Golf Links of Charlotte Harbor is pledging a portion of each Membership

Educate Their Legacy.” In October 2018, Rich Smith along with his Next Cloud, LLC Executive Team will reveal their plans for this evolution. When you want to be the best, you need to work with the best. The Next Cloud, LLC Executive Team leading this industry game changer, is exactly that. Rich Smith, PGA and wife, Ellen, head up the team as Co-CEO’s along with Bob Baldassari, PGA, Chief Operating Officer; John Townsend, Chief Financial Officer; Jason Talley, Chief Technology Officer; Ben Herring, PGA, Chief Championships Officer; Glenn Wise, Office of the CEO/Strategy and Execution; and Charlotta Sorenstam, LPGA, Chief Inclusion GTG Officer & Director of Instruction Services. In addition to this impressive Executive Team, by October’s announcement, Next Cloud, LLC will have 45 PGA members employed corporately who will be running Rich Smith’s full vision and mission on a daily basis. As they look toward the future and implementing the October agenda, they plan to work with thousands of PGA Professionals in the golf industry, worldwide. Florida PGA Foundation Celebrating With Habitat For Humanity By Dave Daubert
Working on face impact is a
common phrase usually applied to a golf club by PGA Professionals. However, on Saturday May 19th it was applied to swinging hammers instead of golf clubs for fifteen PGA Professionals in Vero Beach. The South Florida PGA Foundation was onsite for the wall raising of their seventh home sponsored along with Habitat for Humanity. Local PGA Professionals, SFPGA Board of Directors members and SFPGA Foundation Board members were in attendance, and lending a helping hand for Melissa Arduini and her four sons. The day began with a brief ceremony, recognizing the impact that this home would have on the life of the Arduini family. Remarks were made on behalf the South Florida PGA Foundation, by its President Tom Wildenhaus. On the soon-to-be porch of the unfinished home, Wildenhaus
expressed just how important it was to the South Florida PGA Foundation to be a part of an organization such as Habitat for Humanity. Because of their investment in a family and not a building, and giving back to communities on a personal level were just some of the reasons the SFPGA Foundation chose to support Habitat during its inception in 2011. Once all of the speeches were finished, the front wall was raised by the Arduini family and PGA Professionals in attendance. Then the real work began. For the next four hours, our PGA Professionals were nailing plywood into place, roofing a neighboring home, and performing various tasks that turned a shell into the beginnings of a home. In the next three months there are designated work days for PGA Professionals all across the Section to participate in and contribute to the completion of this home. Once

Valencia Golf & Country Club is Closed For Course Renovations
Reopening scheduled for Fall 2018
This summer Valencia Golf & Country Club has shut down so that it can complete a massive renovation on its course. The 18-hole public course is a favorite of Naples’ locals and visitors alike, and is well known for its undulating fairways, sparkling lakes, and lush strands of palms, pines and cypress reserve. “Valencia is re-investing in our course and the local golf community,” said Head PGA Professional Nick Stokke, “It’s always been our goal to provide the best public golf course experience in Naples, and this investment will improve both the playability and the condition of the course.” Under the guidance of acclaimed golf course architect J. Drew Rodgers, the team at Valencia set out to convert the entire course from 419 Bermuda to
new variety, Celebration. They also will soften some of the green contours, while also resurfacing them to TifEagle. The focal point of the renovation is the bunkering, where they reduced the number and size of the bunkers. Each new and rebuilt bunker has been placed with intent so that they challenge players at all skill levels. The renovations will also help the maintenance team keep the course in top condition, even during the busiest months of season. Valencia plans to reopen in late October or early November. To keep up with their photo updates and get more information, go to ValenciaGolfAndCountryClub.com. Join their email newsletter so that you can be among the first to find out when they announce their reopening date.

Finding the Best SWFL Golf Community for YOU! By Joe Morgan-GOLF HOME GURU Like thousands of other people from all around the world, you’ve decided that you want to live in one of Southwest Florida’s incredible golf communities. But with so many beautiful golf communities from which to choose, how do you determine the right one for you? Even if you’ve owned or rented here for a number of years, this can still be quite challenging…and a search process that should be fun and exciting can sometimes turn exhausting and over-whelming.
The first step to finding your dream home in a SWFL golf community is to find the community that best fits YOUR budget, golfing habits and ability, and family lifestyle. To do this, you need to answer the following questions… • BUDGET—In addition to the purchase price of the home, what annual costs are acceptable to you? Annual ownership expenses will consist of HOA/condo fees, golf/social membership fees, real estate taxes, cart fees, and possibly special assessments and/or food & beverage minimums. After you total up the home’s annual costs, it then helps to estimate how much time you and your family will be at this home each year. Determine if you can justify this annual expense. If not, move on to a home and golf community that better fit your budget. • GOLFING HABITS & ABILITY—How much golf will you and your spouse play each week you’re at your SWFL home? Do you prefer to walk when you play golf? Do you want to have your own golf cart? How tough a golf course can you handle? It’s essential to find a golf course that you and your spouse ENJOY.

• FAMILY LIFESTYLE—What other community amenities and activities will you and your family use most…tennis; fitness center; resort pool; lap pool; pickle ball; bocce ball; spa; casual dining; formal dining? And, what non-community activities—ie beaches; shopping; movies; dining; etc.—are most important to you and your family? The second step is to then select the golf community “category” that best matches up with your answers to the above questions. SWFL essentially features three types of golf communities—public; private bundled; and private equity/non-equity—and each category has its own unique features and fee structures. • PUBLIC GOLF COMMUNITIES—These are housing developments that surround public golf courses. These communities typically have lower prices on single family homes and condos, and more affordable annual costs. They provide the opportunity to live in a golf environment, but without paying an initiation fee or annual golf fees…you simply pay-asyou-play each round of golf. They’re a great deal for individuals or families that aren’t going to be in SWFL much of the year, and also for owners that don’t play much golf. These communities normally feature relatively-low HOA/condo fees, but most of them offer basic country club amenities such as pools, fitness centers, tennis, and limited dining. • PRIVATE BUNDLED GOLF COMMUNITIES—Purchasing a home in one of these communities gets you a full golf/social membership without having to pay an initiation fee. Their annual golf/ social membership fees range from about $4,000-$7,000/year. This category is economically attractive to owners who are going to be in SWFL at least 3-4 months of the year and plan to play a lot of golf. These communities offer outstanding golf courses, a full array of amenities, and they constantly update their courses and facilities. If they have any flaw, it’s their high golfer count… typically 799 golf members per 18-holes. • PRIVATE EQUITY/NON-EQUITY GOLF COMMUNITIES—These communities require an upfront initiation fee for a golf membership, currently ranging from $12,000-$150,000. The median is

around $50,000-$60,000, and there are a number of outstanding communities in this range. Only about 25% of the communities currently offer refunds when the golf membership is terminated, with refunds ranging from 10%-100%. Golf memberships are optional in some communities and mandatory in others, so make sure you know the requirements of the ones that you’re considering. Annual fees in these communities normally range from about $8,000-$12,000/year (roughly double the bundled golf communities). Lush landscaping, championship golf courses, elaborate and elegant facilities, and maximum amenities are common to this category…especially in the higher-end communities. A big advantage of these communities is that they restrict their
number of golf memberships to 300-400 per 18-holes, so it’s a lot easier to get on the course during the busy winter season. Once you’ve matched your answer profile with one of these golf community categories, the third step is to review the individual golf communities in that category. The easiest and quickest way to do this is to use my website, GolfHomeGuru. com, which offers the financial and golf details for every SWFL golf community… and EXCLUSIVELY recommends the “Top 25 SWFL Golf Communities”. Then, contact me for more information…and to visit our great golf homes! TIPS
Chipping Out of Long Rough
Master Swing Tips by Steve Anderson, PGA Master Professional The Summer months finds three of golf’s Major Championships, the US Open, British Open and PGA Championship. All three venues usually feature long rough around the greens, putting a premium on the short game.
During my years working for the legendary Ken Venturi, he taught me a shot that he used to win the US Open in 1964 and it’s one that can help your game. Many times, your ball will be a few yards off the green and the hole is 5075 feet away. This would usually call for a chip and run with a 7 or 9-iron. If your ball is sitting in 3-4 inch rough however this will greatly change your approach. The 7 and 9-iron will have a hard time getting through the rough unless you swing a bit harder, which would result in the ball rolling too far. The photo shows me with my sandwedge and you can see that I’m playing the ball about 6 inches ‘outside’ my back foot. Having the ball so far back will steepen your swing to get through the rough. It’s also de-lofting it some, so you’ll get the added roll you need. You’ll swing down into the ball without much follow-through and your ball will pop out every time and roll close to the hole. It’s a great stroke saver that Venturi used in his Open victory and will help your game too! Steve Anderson is a PGA Master Professional and is the Director of Instruction for Hampton Golf. Steve teaches at River Hall Country Club in Ft. Myers, Florida and is the author of 4 best-selling books on golf. The Putting Wrecker Master Swing Tips by Steve Anderson, PGA Master Professional
In the early 1970’s, something happened in the game that dramatically changed the way golfers swung their putters. That change was in the agronomy, or type of grass used on the greens. From the early days of golf, until then, putting surfaces were on the slower side, about half the speed of today’s greens. It was almost like putting in todays fringes. The old putting stroke consisted of cocking and un-cocking the wrists during the stroke which was necessary to give the ball a good whack. Golfers from Bobby Jones in the 20’s, to Palmer and Nicklaus in the 60’s all used their wrists a lot as seen in photo #1 to the right. When greens became faster and smoother, pros adapted their strokes to also become smoother, and started keeping their wrists quiet as I’m demonstrating in photo #2 to the left. When I worked for the legendary Ken Venturi, he called the action of the left wrist hinging up the ‘Swing Wrecker’ as it led to many less than solid hits. By eliminating the wrists, the stroke has evolved into a simpler motion with fewer moving parts, and nearly all of today’s pros putt with much firmer wrists. The pros back then were all great putters, but having a modern stroke to match up with today’s modern greens is the way to go and can help your putting improve dramatically. Steve Anderson is a PGA Master Professional and is the Director of Instruction for Hampton Golf. Steve teaches at River Hall Country Club in Ft. Myers, Florida and is the author of 4 best-selling books on golf. He can be contacted through his web site; www.MirrorImageGolf.com or by email at; leftguygolf@gmail.com. GolfCoastMagazine.com
4 Steps to Get the Most Out of Your Summer Golf Whether you desire to hit more fairways, dial in your wedges, or lower your putts per round, it’s possible to move the needle in your game in a short period of time. With my professional golf clients, who have very hectic schedules, we plan sprint training phases. Instead of just spending time on your game this summer, you can focus your efforts to invest time with a specific ROI in mind. Below are 4 steps to get the most out of your summer golf. Step 1 - Set Three Micro Goals Start by selecting three micro goals for July through September, meaning very small, targeted and measurable gains. For example, you might want to consistently average 1-2 more greens in regulation on your home course, or increase your percentage of 8 foot putts during practice from 3 of 10 to 6 of 10 because that distance makes you tense on the course. Step 2 - Identify the Gap Before you can create an action plan to achieve your micro goals you need to identify WHAT’s causing the performance gap. With the 8 footers, are you missing important details like grain or break in your read? Or is it an issue of confidence resulting in a tense or jerky stroke? Once you’re clear on the cause of the gap you can plan the steps to close it.
Step 3 - Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan Let’s say that your gap is due to lack of confidence with 8 foot putts.Your stroke is good, but you tend to get tight when you feel like you need to make the putt. You’ll need a plan to improve your thought habits on the green to free up your good stroke. On the practice green you can run putting drills while working on your pre-putting (mental) routine. For example, you might need to imagine the ball rolling into the cup, and make a point of recalling the last time you did make an 8 footer to boost your confidence in the moment. Step 4 - Set Incremental Milestones It would be unrealistic to think that you could achieve overnight success. Lay out some incremental milestones during the three month period. For example, while developing your confidence level on 8 foot putts, set a milestone to advance from 3 of 10 to 4 of 10 by the end of July, then 5 of 10 consistently by the end of August, and so on. When you take the time to create a strategic action plan you’ll be amazed by how much you can transform your game in a short period of time. Now get out there and PLAY GREAT! REAL ESTATE FROM THE EDITOR
PGA Pros Take Real Estate Industry by Storm The Southwest Florida Lifestyle is inseparable from the golf industry. When PGA Professionals Trevor Johnson, Kevin Kuehl, and Jay Westerlund saw how much trouble people, especially those coming from out of state, had navigating the over 120 area golf courses, they decided to leave their positions at local country clubs and start a new type of real estate firm.
My Florida Real Estate is a boutique agency specialized in connecting people with the home and lifestyle of their dreams. Their industry connections in the local golf community and familiarity with nearly every golf course in the area gave them an edge over their competitors. The team has grown to over 10 professionals who take customer service to a new level – from accompanying clients on club tours, showcasing local attractions, and post-sale work such as helping clients find the best insurance for their new home. On the sell side, My Florida Real Estate built the area’s leading website MyFloridaRealEstate.com where prospective buyers can search the local

CUSTOMER REVIEWS “Trevor was outstanding to work with. He coordinated a simultaneous transaction of selling and purchasing a home. He took all the stress out of it for us. The transaction even had a hurricane in the middle of the process and everything still went smooth. I would highly recommend using Trevor for your real estate needs.” BRIAN WASHEK “My experience working with Joyce was awesome... beyond the call of “duty”! There were many obstacles (many not at all expected or necessary) that had to be tackled and Joyce “conquered” all. She was always prompt, reliable, resourceful, and always had a very positive attitude. There is so much more I can say... all in all... FANTASTIC! We all wish all realtors could be as good...
