Retired PGA Section CEO forms Cloud Ten! Purchases Golf Courses
Rich Smith, PGA, recently retired CEO from the North Florida Section of the PGA of America, has acquired his first course under his management company, Cloud Ten! Marketing Group, LLC. Ironically, Bobcat Trail Golf Club in North Port, Florida, the club he was working at when he was recruited to lead the fourth largest section of the PGA of America, is his first purchase. Shortly after closing the Bobcat Trail deal, Smith invested over $2 million in restoring the golf course and clubhouse, in addition to renaming it Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club. Smith said: “The golf course layout at Bobcat is phenomenal, probably one of the best on the Suncoast but needed some TLC (tender loving care) in addition to some cultural changes.” “With the things we are doing, which would not be considered industry normal, we are investing in the game, and it is already paying dividends. Our core tenet is to provide a fun, and exceptional place to play, with service superior to the rest of the market, which has been scaling back at many facilities over the last decade.” Smith seems to have the magic touch. Members and customers at the semiprivate facility are absolutely enamored with what Smith has accomplished. Currently, Smith and his company Cloud Ten! are not only looking at other facilities to purchase, but the word of this renaissance has been sweeping the Suncoast. In fact, other golf facilities have contacted Smith for guidance, suggestions, as well as management and/or purchase agreements. “We are excited about focusing on the game and the people who play it,” Smith said. “That is where it all starts, but it is not just facilities, ownership, or management. We are in the process of something

I’ve never had anyone come to me and say, “I’m hitting it too far, can you show me how to hit it shorter?”One of the easiest ways to add length is to free up your pivot, body motion. We hear about creating resistance between the upper and lower body during the swing but in reality, unless you’re as flexible as Gumby you’ll lose distance by doing that. Here’s a better way to create distance and it’s much easier on your body. Take your normal address position and flair both feet outward. As you make your backswing turn your belly button and the top of your sternum as FAR away from the target as you can. Your front foot will most likely roll to the inside of itself and the front heel will come off the ground...and that’s ok...ALL of the greatest players ever lifted the front foot. By having a free turn in both directions you’ll add length of swing in both directions giving you a bigger arc and more power. Remember, to have a bigger arc you must free up the body motion. Bigger hip and shoulder turn equals bigger arc. Bigger arc means more distance.

Please draw a line in the sand; in fact, draw two lines. Draw one line that is perpendicular to the direction of your golf swing. Now stand so this line is midway between your feet (center line). Now draw a second line that is parallel to the first and that is 10 inches closer to the target. Place your clubhead over the center line and swing; on the forward swing you want to SCRAPE the sand. The scraping should begin at the centerline and continue through the second line. After some practice swings, put a golf ball midway between the 2 lines and continue to swing and scrape.

Develop a routine to setting up to the ball. This will insure that you have the proper grip, alignment, and set up for success. Here is a typical routine that I have my students follow with each shot. Stand behind ball, looking from the ball to the desired target and back to the ball. Make a practice swing Address the ball and confirm alignment Head still and hit the ball. Follow through to the top of your swing. The one thing all golfers want when they take a lesson is to be able to hit the ball with consistency. Golf takes a lot of work to be good. Practice your set up routine with consistency you will achieve the same with your shots.

You need to have a consistent rhythm to your swing to be a consistent golfer. Think about Major League pitchers. They all have different styles and techniques as they make their wind up and throw the ball. Each pitcher does it differently. Some wiggle , some bend over before winding up. Some do an odd movement with their leg. Every style is unique but they are all rhythmic and the rhythm is the same every time. Think about that as you swing the club. Your technique does not have to be “Major League” but you need to have a consistent tempo or rhythm to it. The tempo should be the same over and over again.

Grip pressure rules everything in the golf swing. Keep it light throughout the swing and you should be able to answer these three questions: 1. Where is the club? You should be able to feel where it is during the whole swing. 2. Where is the club going? As you feel the club you should be able to control the directions the club takes. 3. What is your speed? If you feel the club and its directions, you will be able to control the speed of the club throughout the whole swing too!
Select a 9-8-7 Iron - no wedges pleases. This is basically considered an arm motion or like a putting stroke. Your address position is your arms form a triangle and your weight is on the left side. Pre shot routine - practice brushing the ground to give yourself a feel for the shot. Select where you want the ball to land and place the ball in the middle or slightly back of center of your stance. Keep your wrist firm and finish with the back of the left hand to the target.

It’s my experience that average golfers do not hit enough club on approach shots. Here’s a suggestion: If there’s no hazard over the green, hit a club that you know will fly to the back third of the green. Hit it perfectly and you’re on the back of the green. Don’t catch it flush and you’re still on the front of the green. Try it. You’ll hit more greens in regulation and lower your scores.

The most important part of a putt is distance control. Practice five, ten, twenty and twenty-five foot putts using the same speed and rhythm of stroke adjusting the length of stroke. A drill to practice touch is to set balls up at those distances and putt to a flag stick lying on the putting green, try hitting the putts as close to the stick without hitting the stick.

On April 1, 2017 Jan Stephenson’s Crossroads Foundation assumed ownership of Tarpon Woods Golf Club located in Palm Harbor, Florida. This is a significant event for several reasons.
First, is the involvement of LPGA Superstar Jan Stephenson. The former LPGA Tour star has 40+ worldwide victories during her illustrious career, including three major North American championships (Peter Jackson Canadian Women’s Open, LPGA Championship and the Women’s US Open) and 9 worldwide major championships. For many years, she was the face of the LPGA. Jan brings star power and credibility with her to Tarpon Woods. GolfCoastMagazine.com
Jan Stephenson’s Crossroads Foundation was established in 2011 as a 501c3 non-profit organization. The Foundation was originally conceived by Jan to assist individuals who were at a “Crossroads” in their lives. The Crossroads Foundation functioned as a “pass through” charity, raising money and giving it to other charities. One of the charities that benefited was the R.O.P.E. Center, a transitional living facility in Hudson, Florida. “I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel the United States and the world in my golfing career,” said Jan. “During those travels, I have come to deeply appreciate the

extraordinary gift of freedom the United States Military provides to this country and to the world. Recognizing this, I felt compelled to create the Crossroads Foundation with the express purpose of ‘Giving to those who have given so much.” Stephenson has been an ambassador for blind and disabled golfers for over 20 years. On many occasions she has invited her LPGA friends to participate in golf events blindfolded so they could experience what it’s like to play without sight. The immediate plan is to turn Tarpon Woods into a training facility for blind and disabled veterans and first responders (firemen, police and EMS).

“If they were golfers before their injury, we want to teach them to play again with the injury they sustained,” said Michael Vandiver, Executive Vice President of the Crossroads Foundation. “We will also train those blind and disabled veterans and first responders to work in the golf business if they so desire.” Last October, the inaugural Jan Stephenson Celebrity Invitational Golf Classic & Legendary Voices of Rock Concert (sponsored by the May Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors) was the first fundraiser since Tarpon Woods was acquired. of disrepair to the point where it bordered on unplayable.

At the concert Jan was presented with a Proclamation by Mr. Richard Hunt, Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, State of Florida, recognizing Tarpon Woods Golf Club and Jan Stephenson’s Crossroads Foundation as a Purple Heart Golf facility. There are only 2 recognized facilities in Florida and 10 nationwide. This is quite an honor. The concert was held at Clearwater’s Capitol Theatre and featured rock and roll legends Mike Reno (Loverboy), Charles Huhn (Foghat) and Robby Steinhardt (formerly of Kansas), backed by Tampa Bay’s own Stormbringer Band. The two events were a huge success, raising over $30,000. Another reason the acquisition of Tarpon Woods is so significant is that the golf course was in desperate need of new stewardship. For many years, the course has existed on the fringes of respectability. Changes in ownership and management left Tarpon Woods in a state GolfCoastMagazine.com
However, most players who have played it would agree that the course – designed by Lane Marshall – is an inherently good layout. Tree-lined fairways featuring ancient live oaks and cypress heads weave around Brooker Creek Preserve. Wildlife is abundant including alligators, deer, turkey, osprey and other native animals. Stephenson’s team began reclaiming the golf course immediately, lead by Superintendent Rick Wahl. The irrigation system was not working. Pump motors, control boxes and sprinkler heads were replaced and the golf course started coming back to life. Upgrades to the clubhouse are constant, including new coats of paint inside and out. A fleet of new Yamaha QuieTech golf carts is the latest new addition to the facility. The Tarpon Woods pro shop is one of Jan’s pet projects. It features high-end brands such as Antigua, Srixon and Titleist at affordable prices. You will also discover Jan Stephenson wines available from her California winery. Food and beverage at Tarpon Woods is in the capable hands of Beef O’Brady’s, featuring a full-service restaurant and liquor bar. The atmosphere is casual and it’s a great place to grab a bite and a cold beverage before or after your round. Another unique amenity at Tarpon Woods is their Daily Hole-In-One Contest. Technologies, the par-3 17th hole is equipped with HD cameras that record 24/7. Each time you play, you have an opportunity to win $2,500 if you score a hole in one! All daily play golfers – except golf professionals and juniors under 18 – are automatically entered into the contest. “The ultimate goal is for Tarpon Woods to become the best semi-private golf course in the Tampa Bay area within the next receiving a proclamation recognizing Tarpon Woods four years,” stated Stephenson. Fox Hollow Golf Club, is one of the

Golfest Returns February 17 & 18
The Downs Golf Practice Facility – located in Oldsmar just south of Tampa Bay Downs – is proud to announce that the 8th Annual Golfest will be held February 17th & 18th. Valspar Championship Returns March 5 -11
The Valspar Championship – one of the premier tournaments on the PGA TOUR – returns to the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor on March 5-11, 2018. The last three Valspar Championships have gone to exciting playoffs. In 2015, Jordan Spieth won on the third hole over Patrick Reed and Sean O’Hair as a thrilling prelude to his wins in The Masters, U.S. Open, John Deere Classic and TOUR Championship. 2016 found Charl Schwartzel defeating Bill Haas in a one-hole playoff as local amateur Lee McCoy thrilled his fans with a third-place finish. The 2017 tournament continued the trend with a showdown between Canadian Adam Hadwin and rookie Patrick Cantlay, with Hadwin garnering the victory. Hadwin will defend his title in 2018 against another stellar field and, for the fourth year in a row, tournament patrons will also have a chance to see a top music act in a free concert. The Valspar LIVE! event takes place on the Osprey Driving Range adjacent to the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort after the conclusion of play on Saturday, March 10 and is free of charge to all Saturday tournament patrons.

The President’s Report Congratulations to Gary Koch for capturing both the WCC Championship at Old Memorial, and the Senior Chapter Championship at Dunedin Country Club! Gary played great and both victories are well deserved. Due to his victories, Gary felt the need to give back. He donated his time and a substantial portion of his check to an event that the Chapter is hosting for underprivileged youths. The event was held October 18th at Terrace Hill and was hosted by Ken Juhn. Lunch, shirts, and instruction were all provided free of cost! In the future, I will tell you how you all can help in 2018! Lone Palm and Bryan Moran will be hosting our final Pro-Am of the year on November 13th. We also will be having our Holiday Pro-Pro at Pasadena Y&CC followed by the Awards Banquet on December 4th. Norm Francis and Gil Gonsalves are forming a Retired PGA-LM golf schedule. They plan to play once a month and hope to draw golf professionals from Crystal River, Lakeland and Venice. However, any PGA-LM will be eligible to play. The inaugural luncheon-planning committee meeting followed by golf will start at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 13th at River Hills Country Club in Valrico. During lunch committees will be formed to arrange places to play and set golf formats for future events. For the first event, entry fee is $40.00 per person ($25.00 for prize money, $15.00 for cart fee). Please bring cash for entry and cart fees. Initial format will be blind draw best ball of foursome. Hopefully, one person from each age group plus one extra draw. Age groups: 80+ play from 4700 yards; 70-79 play from 5300 yards; and 60-69 play from 5900 yards. Up to 28 PGA TOUR Champions and numerous LPGA players will compete in two distinct competitions with the pros playing for $750,000 over the 54-hole tournament, while the celebrities will play for a $500,000 purse. The format is a Modified Stableford scoring format which awards points as opposed to strokes. Threesomes will include one Champions Tour professional and two celebrities with individuals playing their own ball from the same tees. Last year’s PGA TOUR Champions participants included eventual winner Woody Austin, John Daly, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam, Kenny Perry and John Cook among the age 50+ professionals. LPGA Tour players included some of the tour’s most accomplished players, Lexi Thompson, Brittany Lincicome, Brittany Lang and Brooke Henderson.
