those cold winter days, when plunging temperatures forced us to don golf sweaters. Spring is the sweet spot for Gulf Coast Florida Golf, and there are no better places to enjoy it than the beautiful courses featured in this magazine. Every year we get treated to major golf events throughout the winter, and we’re excited that the Gulf Coast is now host to two more tournaments. The LECOM Suncoast Classic, a new Web.com Tour event, was played from February 11-17 at Lakewood National Golf Club – the inaugural event was a huge success, and we look forward to seeing it again next year. Then, in Charlotte Harbor, the LPGA Symetra Tour has added the SKYiGOLF Championship to its schedule, which is being played for the first time at Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club March 3-10. And don’t forget about the Valspar Championship, a PGA Tour event scheduled for March 1824 at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor. It’s great to see that local golf is thriving, and we hope that you stay up-to-date by visiting GolfCoastMagazine.com and subscribing to our e-newsletter. There, you’ll hear from our writers and contributors, led by Mark Cardon, about all the golf news that affects our community. It is our mission to be your roadmap to the golf industry here along the Gulf Coast. If there’s anything that we can do to help you enjoy more Florida golf, or if you have thoughts about how we can improve our publication, be sure to reach out and email us. We can’t wait to hear from you. Fairways and greens, Ryan Ruppert and Rose Ruppert

COVER FROM THESTORY EDITOR

The Forest Country Club

Newly Renovated and Accepting Non-Resident Members By David Theoret Since opening its doors in 1979, The Forest Country Club has strived to offer its Members quality, integrity and value as one of the premier clubs in the Fort Myers area. The Forest is a family oriented, private country club that is member-owned and features two meticulously maintained, 18-hole Gordon Lewis-designed championship golf courses that are recognized as some of the most beautiful – and challenging – in the area. The Bobcat and The Bear golf courses share several common characteristics and will leave you with many lasting memories. As you make your way around both layouts, you’ll encounter fairways lined with oak, palm and Cypress trees, some over 100-years old. You’re also likely to encounter all kinds of wildlife, from alligators to bobcats to bald eagles. There’s a lot of penalty areas in the form of lakes, ponds and streams to contend with as well. The beauty, design and impeccable conditioning of each course will present GolfCoastMagazine.com

a challenge each time you play. Both courses have been renovated over the past few years and have the look and feel that will match any facility in the area. Since it opened in 1980, Forest Country Club’s acclaimed Bear Course has exceeded the expectations of anyone who has set foot on the first tee. The Bear is considered to be more of a challenge although with five sets of tees, you can make the course as challenging and enjoyable as you like regardless of your skill level. Ranked as the hardest hole on the back side, Number 11 is certainly one of the most interesting and challenging on the entire course. Accuracy and distance control are a must off the tee; the shot requires a slight carry over a waste bunker area on the left side. Too far left off the tee and you may find the lake that cannot be seen from the tee. Hit it too far up the right side and you may find lake #2. A third lake comes into

COVER STORY

play on the layup and approach shots on the left; there’s a lot of mounding around the green on that side as well. A trio of bunkers guarding the right side of the green eliminates that as a bailout option. You can see why par is considered a good score here. The Bobcat Course was renovated in 2015 by Lewis’ firm with two goals in mind: improve the aesthetics and playability of the course and reduce water usage substantially through better use of reclaimed water. Aesthetically, new tees have been built; many of which are much larger. Both the tee boxes and fairways have been regrassed with Celebration Bermuda grass. Putting surfaces have been brought up to USGA standards and regrassed with TifEagle Bermuda grass. Bunkers have been rebuilt and filled with new sand. Cart paths have been rebuilt as have four bridges. This ensures that The Forest Country Club will stay at the forefront of private golf properties in the Fort Myers area.

11

In an effort to better use of their water resources, The Forest Country Club installed a new Toro Golf Decoder Control system as well as WaterTronics pump stations. Mission accomplished; goals achieved! The Bobcat measures 6,607 yards from the longest tees, not the longest course by any means, but don’t let the length fool you; Bobcat will test even the best of players from the back tees. One of the most memorable holes on the Bobcat Course is Number 6. It’s a double dogleg the goes left and then right as dictated by the water. Long ball hitters who can carry the lake on the left off the tee will have a great chance of getting home in two. The rest of us will play it as a three-shot hole. Your layup shot features water on either side of the fairway, although depending on your ball position you may be able to

carry the water on the right. That will set up a short chip into the green which slopes gently from back left to front right. Par is a good score here. Should you prefer racquet sports to golf, the Forest’s Tennis Center has six expertly maintained Har-Tru courts, three of which are lit for night play. Tennis players come from all over the area to learn from Tennis Director Fred Kangwa, a former member of the Zambia, Africa Davis Cup team. As for pickleball, it’s one of the fastest growing sports in the nation and The Forest’s pickleball program includes open play, clinics and leagues on four courts. The Forest unveiled an all new fitness center in January 2019. Their goal is to promote an active and healthy lifestyle for all Members. A wide variety of cardio and strength training equipment is available and the twelve station Life Fitness strength equipment circuit will challenge every muscle group in your body. For those who prefer to exercise outdoors, there are classes at the “Fitness Garden” as well as walking and cycling groups. GolfCoastMagazine.com

The Forest Country Club and its Members recently approved a 9.7M clubhouse renovation and expansion project which will coincide with the club’s 40th Anniversary. The project began in April 2018 and all work is slated to be completed by March 2019. The newly designed 40,000 square foot clubhouse will feature a transitional, contemporary design and expanded indoor and outdoor dining areas with resort style seating and fire pits. The Club’s Formal Dining Room can accommodate up to 300 Members and their guests. This new open concept will allow conversation and company to flow freely from the dining room to the member’s lounge, located just past the lobby. The kitchen has also been redesigned and will feature new stateof-the-art equipment. The new clubhouse will be the perfect place for a wedding or special event. With spectacular views of both Championship golf courses, Members and their guests will delight in The

Club’s dining venues while enjoying magnificent Southwest Florida sunsets. Their Executive Chef and Special Events team will work together with you to ensure your guests have the experience of a lifetime! Currently, The Forest has about 500 Members; that’s not a lot of golfers for a 36-hole complex. Consequently, preferred tee times are not hard to come by. Neither is finding a game. There’s a weekly calendar of events for men, women and couples, allowing you to renew old friendships or start making new ones. Or both! What makes the Forest Country Club unique is the love for the community created within the club. The Forest recognizes that the majority of people join a club to create long lasting friendships. Members golf and enjoy other sports together, dine together, vacation and entertain together, celebrate holidays, birthdays and anniversaries together and participate in charitable organizations together. Members can also participate in over 40 events each year from the theater, mystery dinners, sporting events and live concerts and performances. The Forest is looking for new Members who want to enjoy all of the benefits The Club has to offer. You’ll find a vast array of amenities and a Membership category designed to fit your needs. The Forest offers a number of Membership plans, everything from a Preview Membership to Individual, Family and Executive Golf Memberships to Sports, Tennis and Social Membership.

Premium Club Fitting = Instant Success Aging Golfers Recover Lost Distance - Overcome Injuries Through Custom Club Fitting by Leonard Finkel It’s no secret that age and injury can drastically affect a golfer’s game, making for less enjoyable rounds. The good news - with a professional club fitting, most golfers can hit farther and more accurately so they can once again enjoy the game. Surprisingly, a Golf Magazine study found that 90% of U.S. golfers may be playing with improperly fit clubs. Says world-renowned instructor David Leadbetter, “It never ceases to amaze me that golfers buy clubs off the shelf and assume they’re right for them. Whether you’re a great golfer or a casual one, getting a custom club fitting is one of the quickest ways to improve your game.” The discrepancy between potential and actual performance is much greater for older golfers. Similarly, those recovering from injuries may have movement restrictions hindering their swing. Both groups can uniquely benefit from a fitting. By working with their exact swing mechanics, a master club fitter can maximize what’s working without putting pressure on injuries or areas of the swing that may be declining. One such fitter, Club Champion, has a proven history of success. Sherwood Schoch (85,Topton, PA) was a Navy pilot and Olympic athlete who holds the record at his club for shooting under his age. At 84, he shot 74, after being fitted at Club Champion. “From the initial fitting forward, it’s been a game saving experience,” Schoch shared. “Between health and age, I was on the brink of throwing in the towel, but no more. Now it’s a rare round if I don’t shoot my age. The fitting changed my world!” Schoch’s fitter Brett Castleberry said, “We went with a lighter shaft, but needed a heavier swing weight to create more lag. It increased his clubhead speed by 3-mph and helped him make better and more consistent contact. As a result, he gained 15 yards on his irons.” As for overcoming Schoch’s physical problems, Castleberry continued, “We went with graphite shafts for two reasons. It was lighter, and it helped dampen vibrations which helped us address the problem with his hands.” Club Champion delivers a Tour-quality fitting that produces longer, more accurate shots with a nearly 100% satisfaction rate. Their approach is unbiased; no specific vendor is promoted. The only goal – find the best combination of components to lower your scores. Leadbetter adds, “Club Champion is the #1 premium club fitter, builder and retailer of the best brands in golf. Their master fitters and builders are unrivaled experts. With over 35,000 combinations, Club Champion will build the perfect clubs for you.”

REVIEW

A Golf Digest study found that 8 out of 9 Club Champion custom fit golfers lowered their scores by as much as six strokes per round and added an average of 21 yards off the tee. While anyone will benefit from premium club fitting, it’s for golfers who want to optimize performance. Bill Rees (68, Poland, OH) was playing poorly. Age was robbing him of distance. He thought it might be his equipment. After playing his new clubs Bill stated, “My investment in equipment paid off. I’m playing far better and much more consistently. My good shots are better, and my misses not nearly as severe. My average drive went from around 225 yards to 240 yards, which was the distance I hit it when I was younger. For someone who is serious about golf, this is the way to go. Club Champion exceeded my expectations.”

Bill Rees

Ranked by Golf Digest among the 100 best club fitters nine years in a row, Club Champion’s unique coupling system allows them

17

to combine any head and shaft together. Golfers hit the precise combination to be custom built for Sherwood Schoch them. Club Champion stands out because they build clubs in-house, to exacting, unrivaled tolerances. Variables such as swing weight, length, lie and flex DO alter performance. The experience and know-how combining these intricate parts together is what separates Club Champion from its competition. When Club Champion says you’ll add 20 yards off the tee, they mean it. Legendary instructor Hank Haney believes, “There isn’t anyone who can’t benefit from club fitting. With the advances in custom fitting to optimize your equipment, everybody can achieve more distance. At Club Champion, you get a truly professional fitting. They can prove it works. For somebody not to take advantage of Club Champion’s expertise, they’re wasting a tremendous opportunity.” With more than 50 studios across the country including Tampa, Naples and Orlando, at Club Champion, you don’t just buy clubs, you buy guaranteed improvement! HOMES

Some Tips for Selling Your SWFL Golf Home! By Joe Morgan-GOLF HOME GURU As you may have noticed, most of my articles are targeted at BUYERS of Naples/Southwest Florida golf community homes. In an effort to somewhat “even the playing field”—and, more importantly, because we still have another couple of key-season months for owners to market their homes for sale—I want to devote this article to some tips for our local golf community real estate SELLERS. But, BUYERS, you can also learn from this article…so please read on. Selling a home in a SWFL golf community can sometimes be a little more complicated than the normal home sale. Why? Because their selling prices and annual carrying costs are most often higher than in non-

golf communities, and their community amenities are normally more extensive…so they require additional marketing expertise. As with the sale of any home, your asking price is the paramount factor in how quickly your golf home will get sold. But, determining the correct asking price for a home in a golf community may require some additional evaluations and decisions. Here are some key considerations that you will need to address… • What is my home’s “market value”? Make sure that your real estate agent reviews the most recent 3-6 months’ “comp” sales in your neighborhood. After adjusting each of these “comps” for your home’s advantages and/ or deficiencies, you’ll be able to get a realistic feel for what it’s worth, i.e. its “market value”. This is the key decision that you’re going to make, so don’t get greedy…price it no more than 5% over your agent’s calculated “market value” in order to maximize showings and potential offers. The most critical period for getting the attention of other agents and prospective buyers is when your home is initially listed, so don’t start high with a plan to reduce it if you’re not getting showings. Starting out too high will just result in more discounting and additional days on the market…and will cost you many opportunities.

• How much inventory is available? Most SWFL golf communities currently have about a 6-month to 1-year inventory of homes on the market. But, there are some that have as high as a 3-year inventory based on their current sales velocity. An abnormallyhigh inventory in an entire golf community typically indicates problems that go far beyond over-priced homes…possibly reflecting unacceptable membership and/or HOA requirements; high annual dues/fees; excessive special assessments; mandatory golf memberships; developer/member problems; lack of available golf memberships; etc. These conditions tend to get worked out over time, so it might be best to hold off on selling your home during this period, if you can. However, if you have to sell right away, your primary options are lower-than-normal pricing on your home, special incentives, and/or extraordinarily-creative marketing. • What are the advantages of my home? In my opinion, golf course homes require more promotion, marketing, and advertising than non-golf homes because they have a bigger story to tell. Golf course view is the most important feature of your golf community home, and it needs to be emphasized in MLS, as this is the vehicle that feeds all of the major real estate websites (realtor.com; zillow. com; etc.). It also needs to be featured in all magazine ads, handout brochures, postcards, etc. Make sure your agent promotes all of your home’s advantages, but put your focus on your view of the golf course…that’s the #1 priority of golf community home buyers. A big, panoramic golf course (and lake) view will get you additional dollars for your home; but, if you’re located on a cart path, tee box, or green—in an area that golf carts and 5:30am lawn mowers frequent—you may have to settle for a little less than normal. In addition to the quality of your golf course view, realistic pricing of your home also requires objective input from your agent regarding the extent of outdoor road noise and the status of indoor updates/upgrades… especially, kitchen appliances and counter tops, baths, floors, window/door storm protection, and air conditioning. • What are the strengths of my golf community? In order to maximize the attractiveness of your home, make sure that your real estate agent also aggressively promotes the major advantages of your golf community. Does it have lower golf fees and annual costs than its competitors? Does it have a championship length golf course? Does it have newer and better amenities, and/or

36

HOMES

additional amenities…i.e. pickle ball, bocce ball, walking paths, etc.? Does it have fewer golfers; hence, easier access to the golf course? Does it have less road noise from major streets and highways? Stress your community’s advantages in all marketing materials. • What are surrounding golf communities doing? Quite often, you’ll have to make your pricing decisions based on what’s also happening in nearby competing golf communities. If they’ve gotten aggressive in attracting new buyers, you may have to match their “incentives”— ie free membership transfer fee; free annual golf fee for the first year; etc.—or, come up with your own incentives, in order to get your home sold. All of the above considerations are integral to the success of selling your home in a

Southwest Florida golf community. Hiring a qualified, professional real estate agent to help you make sound “business decisions” will ultimately SAVE YOU TIME AND MONEY!

TIPS

Whoosh

Master Swing Tips by Steve Anderson, PGA Master Professional Many amateur golfers struggle with their short chip and pitch shots around the green. The most common error is that they hit ‘at’ the ball, and slow down at impact. This can cause inconsistent shots that rarely end up close to the hole. Professionals ‘accelerate’ the club through the ball and beyond impact, and realize the ball is simply in the way of the swing. The great Gary Player had a thought that I use with my own students that gets them hitting great shots almost immediately. He said to; “strike a match” when hitting these shots. Think about how you slide a match across the cover when trying to light it. You place it on the striking line and then slide it across. Your finger accelerates the match the whole way until it ignites. You can almost hear the ‘whoosh’ sound. When hitting a chip or pitch, try to make your club do the same thing, accelerating through ‘after’ impacting the ball for a few feet. This way your club is picking up speed as it strikes the ball, and that will always lead to much crisper shots and improved accuracy. Myers, Florida and is the author of 4 best-selling books on golf. He can be contacted through his web site; www.MirrorImageGolf.com or by email at; leftguygolf@gmail.com. GolfCoastMagazine.com

Club Position

TIPS

39

Master Swing Tips by Steve Anderson, PGA Master Professional A common feature among top players is the position of their club when it’s halfway back in their take away. Photo one shows my student Gayle with her club in the proper, straight back position. A checkpoint I use is that the shaft of her club is across, or parallel to the tips of her toes. This will make it easier for her to return to the ball squarely, and have the club swing Photo 1 straight through toward her target. Photo two shows us simulating her club swinging back too far around her. This is known as ‘inside’ too much. When the club swings back around you too much, it will be much harder to square it up at impact, and you’ll get many big pushes or hooks. Think of shooting a bow and arrow. If you pull the string back straight, it’ll then snap the arrow through straight, without you having to make any compensations. Steve Anderson is a PGA Master Professional and is the Director of Instruction for Hampton Golf. Steve teaches at River Hall Country Club in Ft. Myers, Florida and is the author of 4 best-selling books on golf. He can be contacted through his web site; www.MirrorImageGolf.com or by email at; leftguygolf@gmail.com. TIPS

Three Stations of The Swing By Tom Patri I call my three vital stations the three cross roads to success. 1- The Launching Pad ( some call it the set up ) - All systems must be a go here or you will develop a cancer within your motion. I believe most swing cancers begin within the set up. Become a set up expert - Grip, Aim, Stance, Posture. 2- The motion of the backswing. The late and great PGA Professional Bill Strausbaugh Jr. loved the Forefront Drill - He had a student set up and then place the club head 24-36 “ in front of the ball and swing back over the ball . For all of you out there who currently perform some type of dysfunctional backswing, video yourself doing the forefront drill . You will be shocked at how the ills of your backswing are minimized if not gone completely. 3- The Strong Post Up ( you might call it the finish position ). I believe practicing all the ultra complete positions associated with a Strong Post Up will pay huge dividends. After all this is a “ target side orientation “ in a target game! One more note I love practicing these three vital stations of the golf motion in front of a mirror indoors several million times a day. “ See-n-feel “ make it real! Please share this with all of your golf friends, tell them TP said so! Tom Patri is the President and Founder of TPGOLF. He is a former Met PGA Teacher of the Year as well as a former South Fl. PGA Teacher of the Year. Tom is a Golf Tips Magazine Top 25 Instructor in America. He teaches at Esplanade in Naples, Fl. Tips from the Pros at Alico Family Golf AlicoFamilyGolf.com

Blaine Lytle, PGA

“We all do it, enter that Sunday morning round of golf with confidence, pictures of a perfect drive, that second shot two feet from the cup then sinking the putt for that ground shaking roar and starting your round one under par. Reality for most of us is we start with a playable tee shot, leave the approach shot 10-20 yards short, pressure to get it close builds, dub the chip shot or blade it across the green, get it on then two putt for that punch in the gut double bogey. The following putting drill will not only build confidence but help diminish the pressure of that third shot onto the green. Place 5 balls in a line from 2’ to 15’. Practice putts from shortest to longest, you will gain confidence on the green and relieve pressure knowing you only want to get within 15’ of the hole.”

“My name is Trey Sones. I am a Teaching Golf Pro at Alico Family Golf Center. In 1994/1995 I was ranked 9th in the world as an amateur according to Golf Digest. Here is a simple drill using two ailment rods. Place one on the ground to the target and one parallel to the target on the ground. You will set up to the ball just inside the target rod and your feet line with the ailment rod parallel. Using a pitching wedge, you want to bring the club head back with the head of the club just outside the alignment rod along your feet line parallel to the ground. Hold that position then rotate to the top of your golf swing feeling the club head feeling slightly open at the top. Then rotate all the way through the ball as if you were hitting a baseball staying level to the finish. This drill will help with swing plane and balance.”

Use Your Imagination to Play Great Golf

If you had a chance to read the article in the last issue then you know that your imagination is one of your important inner tools. You’ve witnessed professional golfers, like Jason Day, using their imaginations as part of their pre-shot routine. I teach golfers of all levels how to guide their imaginations in a successful direction by using a proven pre-shot routine too. But did you know that how you think about your game off the course can be just as important to your success as how you think when you’re actually playing the game? Consider the number of times you’ve commiserated about missed shots over drinks with your golf buddies after a round. The habit of focusing on what went wrong can undermine your ability to consistently improve your scores. All you’re doing is reinforcing memories of the moments and shots you don’t want to repeat in future rounds. Negative reinforcement doesn’t work. Even trying to just forget about a bad round is a big missed opportunity to gain some ground in your next one. You can start using mental imagery when you’re at home to train your mind to perform better the next time you’re on the course. All you need is a simple strategy designed to use the power of your imagination to conduct a more productive post-round reflection. Replace the Bad with Better Step #1 - After you’ve completed your round, find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted and invest 5-10 minutes to reflect on your game.

Step #2 - Identify a shot from your round that resulted in disappointment. It could have been when you made a poor club choice, when you lacked confidence over a short putt and pulled it, when you rushed your shot, or when you lost a ball in a hazard. Select one to start. Step #3 - Objectively assess the situation you’re recalling, and ask yourself the following reflective questions — • What did I do correctly in that moment? • What can I now see and learn from the experience? • If I had an opportunity to replay the shot, what might I do differently, or what other options could I consider? Step #4 - Next, replay the shot in your mind using a better approach you’ve just considered. Step #5 - Repeat the process, going over every moment that left you frustrated or disappointed with your game, using your imagination to rewrite the narrative in your mind. By doing so, you’re imagining yourself staying in the power seat of your game. If you commit to making this strategy part of your post-round habits you’ll find that the next time you’re feeling challenged by the game you’ll be more prepared to find a good solution, pick a smarter shot, feel more confident about the situation and more. When you use your imagination to rehearse better play you’re actively priming your mind to help you play better under similar situations that will come up in future rounds. Get into the habit of imagining what you’d like to do more of rather than wasting time bemoaning the things you hope you don’t repeat.
