Tarpon Springs Golf Course Originally built in 1908, the Tarpon Springs golf course follows the architecture of the time with small, elevated greens and quite a few doglegs. The course is very scoreable on your good days, while water hazards can wreak havoc on your bad ones. During the summer of 2014, all 18 greens and two practice greens were reconstructed. The greens now feature new contours and state-of-the-art Seashore Paspalum turf. At the same time, bunkers were re-sanded and the driving range renovated. Tarpon Springs golf course is honored to be a participating course on the Florida Historic Golf Trail. Club Champion Expands Training Program

Club Champion can call itself the country’s #1 fitter, builder and retailer of the best brands in golf for many reasons, but the expansive fitter and builder training program lends proof to the claim. As of April 2019, the premium fitting brand has updated and expanded its existing classes – already 150+ hours of learning – to include a wider array of topics, more hands-on exercises and additional teaching experts. The training program, called Club Champion University (CCU), now includes a 144-page manual, six professors, two weeks of classroom learning and mock fitting, followed by another two weeks of live fitting with the team at the Chicagoland headquarters. Hosted every two weeks, the program is the first step in becoming a certified Club Champion fitter. “Our fitters are the core of the company,” said Nick Sherburne, Club Champion founder. “Having the most passionate and most educated individuals in our fitting bays is what ensures that we can provide the results we promise and the immersive experience our customers want.” Sherburne himself is the Dean of CCU, personally overseeing all of the processes and fitters. His expertise, along with that of the other professors, is what drives all of the new hires and guides the company standard. Because

Club Champion does not franchise – all its studios are corporate owned – the company is able to streamline everything nationwide to ensure that a golfer will receive as comprehensive a fitting in Seattle as they will in Orlando. To further the education of each master fitter after graduating CCU, Club Champion hosts its own online learning center called Thinkzoom. This platform has training and instructional videos about everything from fitting procedures to products, even customer service. Mandatory classes are held through this platform year-round, along with bi-weekly conference calls and webinars with product manufacturers like Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist, Golf Pride and more. Understanding each brand and line of products is imperative when fitting a golfer into the best combination of clubs for their individual swing. The President’s Report The West Central Chapter’s 2019 tournament season is well underway and very well attended. Our focus this year is on engagement and growth for our chapter. We are not afraid to try new events or venues to try to help overall participation and excitement within our chapter. With that said, we are excited to announce the first Woman’s Chapter Championship to be held at Belleair Country Club in direct correspondence with our Chapter Championship. All of our women chapter members are eligible to compete in this championship sponsored by Century Buick and Kia, as long as they are in good standing. Our Senior Chapter Championship was held at Dunedin Golf Club June 3rd and 4th. Gary Koch won for the third consecutive year with a 4 under par total of 140. Matt Mitchell, Keith Kulzer, Jim Slattery and Michael West tied for second one stroke back. Zoran Ilic, PGA continues to push our Assistant Association. Once again 5 events that combine education and tournament opportunities for our Associates will be offered. If an Associate attends a minimum of 3 events, they will have the opportunity to follow criteria to be awarded an Assistant Grant for $1,000 towards their PGA Associate education. The money raised for this grant came from our final Pro-Am of

2018 at Lone Palm. Last year’s recipient, Michael Ramos, was recognized during our Awards Pro-Pro at Palma Ceia on April 4th. The First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee Announces New Development Director

The First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee (TFTSM), an organization founded in 2005 with the primary goal of impacting the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf, has hired golf industry veteran and good friend Andy Mears as its Development Director. Mears, a native of Michigan, and most recently Development Director for the First Tee of Greater Chicago has spent 40 years working in different areas of the golf industry. A PGA member, Andy moved from the club pro ranks in 1992 and has primarily been in the corporate and trade association side of the industry ever since. Mears is also on the executive committee of the International Network of Golf, the industry’s premier networking organization for resorts, businesses, manufacturers and media, celebrating its 25 year anniversary. His position will have him managing fundraising along with other duties under the leadership of Lexi McKenney, TFTSM Executive Director. With a view to the future, McKenney said, “We are thrilled to have Andy on board to provide us with his experience and knowledge of the industry and his leadership and organizational abilities to run and grow our vital fundraising program.” GolfCoastMagazine.com

Andy’s responsibility will be to attract new resources to increase the opportunity to bring golf and its core values into the lives of young people ages 4 to 17 in the two counties. The First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee currently serves area youth at golf course locations and in-school programs, as well as LPGA/USGA Girls Golf of Sarasota/ Manatee, Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association and PGA Junior League. The First Tee is supported by generous donations from corporate partners, foundation grants and individual donors. Club Position Master Swing Tips by Steve Anderson, PGA Master Professional A common feature among top players is the position of their club when it’s halfway back in their take away. Photo one shows my student Gayle with her club in the proper, straight back position. A checkpoint I use is that the shaft of her club is across, or parallel to the tips of her toes. This will make it easier for her to return to the ball squarely, and have the club swing Photo 1 straight through toward her target. Photo two shows us simulating her club swinging back too far around her. This is known as ‘inside’ too much. When the club swings back around you too much, it will be much harder to square it up at impact, and you’ll get many big pushes or hooks. Think of shooting a bow and arrow. If you pull the string back straight, it’ll then snap the arrow through straight, without you having to make any compensations. Master Swing Tips by Steve Anderson, PGA Master Professional Many amateur golfers struggle with their short chip and pitch shots around the green. The most common error is that they hit ‘at’ the ball, and slow down at impact. This can cause inconsistent shots that rarely end up close to the hole. Professionals ‘accelerate’ the club through the ball and beyond impact, and realize the ball is simply in the way of the swing. The great Gary Player had a thought that I use with my own students that gets them hitting great shots almost immediately. He said to; “strike a match” when hitting these shots. Think about how you slide a match across the cover when trying to light it. You place it on the striking line and then slide it across. Your finger accelerates the match the whole way until it ignites. You can almost hear the ‘whoosh’ sound. When hitting a chip or pitch, try to make your club do the same thing, accelerating through ‘after’ impacting the ball for a few feet. This way your club is picking up speed as it strikes the ball, and that will always lead to much crisper shots and improved accuracy. Use Your Imagination to Play Great Golf

If you had a chance to read the article in the last issue then you know that your imagination is one of your important inner tools.You’ve witnessed professional golfers, like Jason Day, using their imaginations as part of their pre-shot routine. I teach golfers of all levels how to guide their imaginations in a successful direction by using a proven pre-shot routine too. But did you know that how you think about your game off the course can be just as important to your success as how you think when you’re actually playing the game? Consider the number of times you’ve commiserated about missed shots over drinks with your golf buddies after a round. The habit of focusing on what went wrong can undermine your ability to consistently improve your scores. All you’re doing is reinforcing memories of the moments and shots you don’t want to repeat in future rounds. Negative reinforcement doesn’t work. Even trying to just forget about a bad round is a big missed opportunity to gain some ground in your next one. You can start using mental imagery when you’re at home to train your mind to perform better the next time you’re on the course. All you need is a simple strategy designed to use the power of your imagination to conduct a more productive post-round reflection. Replace the Bad with Better Step #1 - After you’ve completed your round, find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted and invest 5-10 minutes to reflect on your game.

Step #2 - Identify a shot from your round that resulted in disappointment. It could have been when you made a poor club choice, when you lacked confidence over a short putt and pulled it, when you rushed your shot, or when you lost a ball in a hazard. Select one to start. Step #3 - Objectively assess the situation you’re recalling, and ask yourself the following reflective questions — • What did I do correctly in that moment? • What can I now see and learn from the experience? • If I had an opportunity to replay the shot, what might I do differently, or what other options could I consider? Step #4 - Next, replay the shot in your mind using a better approach you’ve just considered. Step #5 - Repeat the process, going over every moment that left you frustrated or disappointed with your game, using your imagination to rewrite the narrative in your mind. By doing so, you’re imagining yourself staying in the power seat of your game. If you commit to making this strategy part of your post-round habits you’ll find that the next time you’re feeling challenged by the game you’ll be more prepared to find a good solution, pick a smarter shot, feel more confident about the situation and more. When you use your imagination to rehearse better play you’re actively priming your mind to help you play better under similar situations that will come up in future rounds. Get into the habit of imagining what you’d like to do more of rather than wasting time bemoaning the things you hope you don’t repeat.
